Living Beyond the Brain: The Eternal Nature of Consciousness

The Soul Horizon

The main question we'll be answering in this episode is: Is the brain the producer of consciousness or the receiver of it? To answer this question, we'll explore the two primary theories on consciousness—the reductionist or materialist model and the holographic, spiritualist, or non-local model. We'll then dive deep into the spiritualist model of consciousness and explore a specific, prevailing theory within the broader spiritualist take on consciousness. Namely the holographic model of consciousness. And how this model of consciousness easily solves the so-called 'unsolvable' mysteries of our time.*Note: Although hallucinogenic substances are referenced in this episode, I haven't used them myself and am not in any way suggesting you do so. However, I do recommend trying (only if it's safe for you to do so) holotropic breath work if you're interested in inducing an altered state of consciousness.SourcesRadin, D. In this episode, we'll embark on a sort of time-displacing odyssey in which we consider the idea—based on scientific discoveries and paradigm-shattering theories—that linear time is nothing more than an intricate and clever illusion. A trick of the mind per se. What does it mean for this to be true and how might we evolve our own perspective so that we can free ourselves to live beyond the illusion of time? Seeing Beyond the Illusion of Physicality

My intention with this episode is to open your mind to the multidimensional nature of reality. To breakthrough the outmoded barriers of naïve realism. The ones that suggest that our five human senses provide us with direct awareness of objects as they really are. It's naïve realism that's left us bought into the illusion that reality is limited to only that which we can perceive through the limitations of the human nervous system.Broadly speaking though, my hope is to inspire you to shift your perception beyond the status quo belief that we live in a purely physical reality. Over a hundred years ago, science turned this idea on its head and dismantled it, yet we still haven't caught up. And I'd say it's about time we get ourselves caught up…Because until we do, we'll mistake illusion for reality.Perhaps even more importantly though…When our view of reality is fragmented (seeing reality as made up of separate physical objects), our view of self and others is fragmented as well. We see ourselves as being separate from all else as opposed to one whole part of an even greater whole. And it's separation consciousness that's the root of all suffering.I believe that peering beyond the illusion of physicality—and the illusion of separation that it invokes—is the first step towards unity consciousness on this planet.SourcesChopra, D. Cory Kingstrom joins the conversation. Today's topic indulges the question, “How do you fight right? Cory and Danielle discuss what they've learned from Dr. Julie Schwarz Gottman and Dr. John Gottman's new book, “Fight Right: How Successful Couples Turn Conflict into Connection.” Danielle received this book as a complimentary gift from Harmony Books. Thank you for the gift! The conversation indulges what our takeaway is from understanding conflict under a new lens, the lens of connection. We discuss conflict styles and Cory and Danielle do not see eye-to-eye on which type of conflict style fits best. The conversation then turns toward Internet Authentication. Should the government verify all social media and internet users or should people be afforded the cloak of anonymity? The conversation then morphs into a discussion on Red Pill agendas and why Andrew Tate and his ilk are dangerous to discourse. From there, we briefly delve into “What is stoicism?” And finally, we delve into the infidelity conversation and discuss how abandonment issues can create conflicts in relationships. This episode is filled with so much substance, nuance, and two individual perspectives compassionately considering one another in an authentic, connected dialogue. This is an edited talk that Justine Willis Toms gave in the summer of 2014. She includes the four keys to thriving in chaotic times and compares this time to that of a caterpillar inside the cocoon where it liquefies and the imaginal cells begin to coalesce, soon to emerge as a butterfly. She suggests that we are the imaginal cells of the changing of an age. Since 1973, Justine Willis Toms has been exploring personal, social and spiritual transformation through her work as an electronic journalist, editor and writer. She is co-founder, executive director and host of New Dimensions Radio. She is a founding convener of The Millionth Circle Initiative and has been actively involved in circle work since 1980. She serves on the board of World Prayers as well as Women’s Perspective. In June 2004, she was one of 30 people in the world invited to participate in The Synthesis Dialogues with his holiness the Dalai Lama. She was inducted into the Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2011. Dr. Harold S. Koplewicz, president of the Child Mind Institute, has a new parenting book: THE SCAFFOLD EFFECT: Raising Resilient, Self-Reliant, and Secure Kids in the Age of Anxiety The book teaches moms and dads a strategy called scaffold parenting. The idea is tat the child is the “building,” and the parents are the scaffold around it, the framework that guides and protects as the child rises and grows. THE SCAFFOLD EFFECT: Raising Resilient, Self-Reliant, and Secure Kids in the Age of Anxiety by Child Mind Institute president Dr. Harold S. Koplewicz will be released by Harmony Books on February 2, 2021 and 100% of the author proceeds will benefit the Child Mind Institute. In this age of unprecedented challenges, distractions and demands, kids are depending on their parents to help them sidestep emotional fragility and crippling anxiety. THE SCAFFOLD EFFECT expertly guides parents through strategies for raising empowered, capable people by giving them the tools to flourish on their own. It brings together Dr. Harold S. Koplewicz’s clinical and parenting knowledge with the expertise of the psychologists, psychiatrists and learning specialists at the Child Mind Institute Good parenting is like scaffolding giving both the construction worker (or parent) something to stand on and the building (or child) something to lean against. Just as sturdy scaffolding is necessary when erecting a building but will come down as the structure grows stable, good parenting provides children with steady, warm, and emotional nourishment on the path toward independence. THE SCAFFOLD EFFECT demonstrates that the deliberate build-up and then gradual loosening of parental support is the single most effective way to encourage kids to climb higher, try new things, grow from mistakes, and develop character and strength. Scaffolding — rather than other parenting techniques such as helicopter, snowplow, concierge, or Tiger Mom — ensures our children’s emotional resilience.

BACK IN THE SADDLE! We finally return to the world of audio podcasting after a few weeks of video capture and training (coming June 2009). This week we dream of android-sheep, with cultural critic and social theorist Erik Davis. In this (the first of many we hope) interview, we decided to focus on Erik's study of visionary-author Phillip K. Dick, as well as a brief look at Davis' own 'Techgnosis' studies. In this episode, we discuss Phillip K. His in-depth studies of the science fiction author Philip K. Dick have been acknowledged by the New Yorker. He’s authored 90 books. A Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Teaches meditation (with Oprah!). Been a husband for 49 years. A devoted father and grandfather. And he's beloved by Lady Gaga. So, other than his daily coffee, yoga, and more cushion time (“Om”) than a geriatric dog, what more could a guy want? Plenty, it turns out. Nothing short of enlightenment. And not just for himself, if humanity’s going to make it. Good thing he’s written the book on that. I feel ridiculously blessed to welcome Dr. Deepak Chopra on the Beautiful Writers Podcast today. It’s his FIRST tour stop for MetaHuman: Unleashing Your Infinite Potential, which pubs next month via Harmony Books. Our mutual friend, Arielle Ford, is our special-sauce guest co-host. She’s widely credited with making Deepak a household name back in the day as his longtime book publicist. (Arielle helped facilitate the rapid growth of self-help, launching clients like Marianne Williamson, Louise Hay, Wayne Dyer, Neale Donald Walsh, and her sister, Debbie Ford, before authoring eleven books herself.) Deepak and Arielle are like family, the kind forged over lifetimes, she says. Doesn’t sound too farfetched after hanging out with them. No stuffed shirts here! As Arielle promised, Deepak is delightfully FUN. Sure, I couldn’t get him to complain or gossip—not even about politics (well, he did mention some “thugs"). But girlfriends had to break it down, and Arielle and I got our fix at the end once he hung up. Here’s to hoping the big D is too busy contemplating the universe (or lack of one—just wait) to care that we closed the show talking about him behind his back. Just balancing the scales, Deepak. You drew first blood with those names you called my girl at the top of our show. (Smiley.)We’ve got a lot to cover, including how haters caused Deepak to take the MD off his books for a time (say what?!); ways in which meditation increases our creative genius, and his especially enlightening answers to our rapid-fire Q's. If you’ve ever hoped to get off the rat wheel (BEYOND the wheel), you’re going to love this new book, as well as his advice for accessing "the window of infinite creativity.” We talk silencing the inner bullies in our heads, and his favorite author & book, which I ordered immediately. Of course, he’s got a meditation schedule you’ll never in a million years be able to replicate, but may find wildly entertaining. Pretty much the same thing for his nighttime sleep rituals—how can anyone remember all this stuff, much less implement them? Ahh. A girl can dream. Or, go beyond the dream. Isn’t that the point? I mean, it’s all an illusion, right? All I know is the guy’s voice makes me happy. “Like champagne bubbles in my head,” Arielle says. Here, here. Drink up. Welcome. Linda xo

In Part Two of this file the prominent book editor-turned-author, Peter Guzzardi, spent some time with me this week to discuss how he pulled back the curtain on the writer's life, finding courage in front of the blank screen, and important lessons from the Yellow Brick Road for creatives. "Somehow, despite having made a career of helping writers with their second and third and fourth drafts, I must have been harboring hopes that my first try would displace Shakespeare from his perch atop the literary pantheon." – Peter Guzzardi Peter has been a professional book editor for nearly 40 years. After getting his start in marketing, writing catalog copy in New York City, he moved to the editorial side where he eventually took the reins at Harmony Books, an imprint of Random House, Inc. Mr. Guzzardi has worked with some incredibly talented authors over the years, including Stephen Hawking on A Brief History of Time, Deepak Chopra on dozens of books, Douglas Adams on his Hitchhiker novels, Carol Burnett, Martin Amis, Arianna Huffington, and even Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Like so many aspiring writers who "swear they're going to finally write that book," Peter decided to throw his hat in the ring and write about the wisdom he'd accumulated on his own journey. The result of that hard work is his recently published Emeralds of Oz: Life Lessons From Over the Rainbow, an apropos title for 2019, the 80th anniversary of the film classic, The Wizard of Oz. Emeralds of Oz is a book in the "...tradition of All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten ... life lessons drawn from the most beloved movie of all time," and Carol Burnett said, "I loved this book as much as I loved the movie." Prominent book editor-turned-author, Peter Guzzardi, spent some time with me this week to discuss how he pulled back the curtain on the writer's life, finding courage in front of the blank screen, and important lessons from the Yellow Brick Road for creatives. "One thing I love about this work is the variety. I’ve edited novels by authors as different as Ruth Rendell and Martin Amis, memoirs by Tony Curtis...and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar..." – Peter Guzzardi Peter has been a professional book editor for nearly 40 years. Emeralds of Oz is a book in the "...tradition of All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten ... life lessons drawn from the most beloved movie of all time," and Carol Burnett said, "I loved this book as much as I loved the movie." This episode of The Writer Files is brought to you by the team at Author Accelerator. Author Accelerator book coaches give writers feedback, accountability, and support while you write, so you can get that your idea out of your head and onto the page. In Part One of this file Peter Guzzardi and I discussed: How he came to rub elbows with so many celebrity authors The unique skillsets of great editors and their importance to the publishing industry Why the challenges the author faced birthing his own book were so different than he could have imagined How he found courage in front of the blank page The importance of crappy first drafts and turning off your inner critic Show Notes: PeterGuzzardi.com Emeralds of Oz: Life Lessons from Over the Rainbow by Peter Guzzardi [Amazon] The Wizard of Oz at 80: how the world fell under its dark spell - Luiza Sauma for The Guardian Peter Guzzardi on Instagram Peter Guzzardi on Twitter Peter Guzzardi on Facebook Kelton Reid on Twitter Please click the PayPal Donate button to support The Writer Files with a secure PayPal donation
