Your still point is quieting the noise so you can hear your own wisdom.” “Presence plus Quiet is how you get to your still point.” Episode Overview In this episode, I talk with Kathy Robinson, a corporate executive turned author, teacher, and certified wellness coach. We know that the most successful and happy people have a morning routine, what do you do each morning or evening that sets your day up for success? Water, coffee, write, meditate, make my bed, exercise, and get ready for work. Q2. What's your definition of Success? Purpose and Impact. I have a saying in my office, “Let the life you live be the lesson you teach,” and that’s my daily reminder to live with purpose. Q3. What's your definition of Happiness? It’s about living wholeheartedly. Fully embracing who I am, showing up with an open heart, open hands, and doing things that light me up with the people I love. Q4. What do you know now that you wish you would have known 10 years ago? I would tell my type-A perfectionist younger self three things: 1) Relax, it’s all going to work out and even better than you can anticipate. 2) Sometimes you have to let go of things you love to let new things in and to grow and that’s okay. 3) Don’t forget to enjoy the journey, it’s a lovely ride. And that’s what my 75-year-old self would tell me today, to live with ease, let go with grace, and just have a blast and enjoy it all. Q5. What do you think is the biggest issue facing busy professionals today? Presence. To be aware but not be distracted by the past or the future. Presence plus Quiet is how you get to your still point. Favorite quotes of the episode: “I work hard when I’m at work and I use my downtime to recharge hard.” Dr. Dixon shares the power of a positive mindset and how she maintains her well-being while paying down over $200k in student loan debt, “The difference between exhaustion and burnout is really just my thoughts about it at the end of the shift. I can look around and literally see these lives that I saved and the lives that I touched, and I don’t feel burned out.” “I was very resentful of having this student loan debt hanging over my head for the next 20 years, and needed to change my mindset from it’s unreasonable to pay more than the minimum towards my debt to realizing this debt is making me uncomfortable and causing me anxiety so why don’t I just take control of it and get rid of it.” “It’s not unreasonable to invest in things that matter to you and paying off my student loan debt matters to me.” Episode Overview I kicked off 2019 with a promise to discuss big issues, big ideas and provide real-world actionable solutions that we can all implement in our daily lives as busy professionals. She is currently working at an Emergency Veterinary Clinic in Colorado Springs. Prior to earning her veterinary credentials, Dr. Dixon served as an officer in the United States Coast Guard and was stationed in Astoria, Oregon and New Haven, Connecticut. When not at work, Dr. Dixon can be found hiking all over Colorado with her two dogs, Huckleberry and Kit. She also has two cats named Peek-a-boo and Hamish who don't hike but enjoy helping her solve crossword puzzles. Q3. What's your definition of Happiness? Feeling ok. When you walk out of a meeting and the sun hits your face and you feel warm and you can be in the moment and value every second of the day. Q4. What do you know now that you wish you would have known 10 years ago? That life goes on. We’ve all had trips, falls, and failures but it’s ok. Q5. She created the online transformational program called “Dethroning Your Inner Critic™, and podcast. It is an approach that centers around her groundbreaking M.I.N.D Method, which consists of examining the habitual and conditioned thoughts and beliefs in our minds that have been playing on a repetitive loop for our whole lives and are as transparent as breathing. She teaches clients to rewire the automatic hardwiring in their minds, not by changing the conditioned thoughts, but by breaking the habit of giving energy and attention to the conditioned thoughts and beliefs. The M.IN.D Method is one-of-a-kind, and its foundation is guided by the unconventional idea that you don’t need a lifetime to learn, master and then change the processes of the mind. Most people try to change the external circumstances of their lives in order to think and feel the contentment and satisfaction they desire. Her methods focus on changing from the inside out. Favorite quotes of the episode: “Don’t let anyone else’s story demotivate you. Figure out where you are at and where you want to go, then learn along the way.” “Balance between saving for future goals and living life today.” “Financial Independence isn’t about the money, it’s about life fulfillment, create a life you don’t want to retire from.” Episode Overview I kicked off 2019 with a promise to discuss big issues, big ideas and provide real-world actionable solutions that we can all implement in our daily lives as busy professionals. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Marianne Krumdick, a veterinarian, a CPT in the USAR Veterinary Corps and a personal finance enthusiast who is working towards FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early). She even led a Financial Peace University Course (developed by Dave Ramsey) while deployed. I thought it would be fun and hopefully useful, to have a real-world conversation with real people about personal finance, which resources have helped us along the way and share our perspectives. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I enjoyed speaking with Dr. K! *Disclaimer: We are NOT financial professionals; this podcast is for entertainment purposes only. These podcasts are meant to start a meaningful conversation so if you would like to see additional guests share another viewpoint around any of these topics please send an email to angela@pawsconsulting.com with your comments and suggestions for future podcast guests and topics. I absolutely cannot wait to hear from you and look forward to your insights and thoughtful comments. I will cite all articles referenced in this podcast in our show notes so you don’t have to stop what you are doing to scramble to find a pen and paper. So, with that, let’s jump right in. TOPICS Tackling student loan debt while living the life of your dreams and achieving financial independence. *You don’t have to live in your parent’s basement to get there. Balance between saving for future goals and living life today. FI, FIRE, Lean FI, Fat FI, FFLC, ERE– Definitions and understand that financial independence isn’t about the amount of money but what you need to be financially stable and not need a full-time job. It’s about life fulfillment, create a life you don’t want to retire from. Retire early and often! Step 1: Where are you today? Budget vs. Un-Budget How to Un-budget? How much can I afford to save? And do that first. Then automate your monthly expenses from your checking account. Dave Ramsey’s plan is a good get out of debt plan, where to start. Create a budget and list where you spend your money. It may take 90+ days to get a handle on where you spend money and where to cut or replace your current service with a less expensive alternative that gives you the same or greater value. Discussion of Dave Ramsey’s Baby Steps Spender vs. Saver? Mindset shift: Spend into a savings account in a different bank! What’s next after you get out of debt? Where Dave Ramsey ends, and FIRE begins. Get out of the mindset of having someone else “handle it” because no one cares about your money and your financial independence more than you. Keep learning as you go. Where to put your money? Depends on your goals. How to stay motivated: Color in a debt barometer or make a paper chain to keep the family involved and motivated! Don’t drag it out longer than you have to because you will lose motivation. The fun account! Profit first is a way to motivate yourself and keep you focused on your goals. Everyone needs a release valve! Angela’s hypothesis, what happens when you combine Profit First and the Dave Ramsey method? 42:50- 5 Questions Segment Q1. Life Science Effect Podcast Swap: Show Notes You might remember about a month ago, in episode 14, I interviewed Steve Vinson from the Life Science Effect Podcast on tech trends in the life sciences and biopharma. We thought it would be fun to interview each other on our own podcasts so rather than be the host, I would be the guest on Beyond the Stethoscope. Also, I get a lot of questions and feedback from you that you want to learn more about me, my career and how I navigated my career transitions and what I’m doing now. Since we were already guests on each other’s podcast, it seemed easier or more prudent to simply use the pre-recorded audio and share that information with our audiences. I hope you enjoy this episode swap between The Life Science Effect and Beyond the Stethoscope Podcasts. More diverse teams produce really cool ideas and more profitability. For example, A Forbes article from January 2018 shared current research stating, “…gender is not the only side of the story. Companies with more culturally and ethnically diverse executive teams were 33% more likely to see better-than-average profits. At the board of directors level, more ethnically and cultural diverse companies were 43% more likely to see above-average profits, showing a significant correlation between diversity and performance.” 5:00 As busy professionals, hiring managers, or members of a team, how can we be positive influences in our workplace? 6:00 How to find and tap into talent pools outside of your current networks. 8:30 What is unconscious bias? 11:20 How can we become more aware of our own unconscious biases’? Harvard Project Implicit is one free tool. 12:17 I want to share some information about your column, Diversity Toolbox, for Today’s Veterinary Business magazine. One of my favorite articles is from August of 2018, titled Fairness and Equity for all. In it, you talk about applying an equity framework to decision making to help mitigate disparities. Can you share some examples about how we could apply equity frameworks in our daily lives? 14:00 Discussion of grit and resiliency. 16:00 In preparing for this podcast you shared with me some journal articles that we could share with our audience. One that I found to be particularly powerful, insightful and quite simply found myself wondering how I was going to restrain myself from reading the entire, 6-page article to our listeners was an article by Alice Eagly and Jean Chin published in the April 2010 American Psychologist called Diversity and Leadership in a Changing world. They provide a wide-ranging overview of this topic in an interesting and easy to read format. I want to share their final thoughts with our listeners. “We advocate ending the intellectual segregation of considerations of gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, and culture from mainstream leadership theory and their treatment as a separate domain of study. To counter this segregation, we recommend that scholars of leadership contemplate how their theories might better address diversity concerns and that scholars of diversity study leadership because this knowledge has considerable potential to illuminate issues of race, ethnicity, gender, and culture.” 20:15 Lisa’s Podcast Diversity and Inclusion On Air; discussion on Intersectionality and integration of leadership and diversity research. 21:22 And finally, I’d like to talk about an amazing idea raised by Quinetta Roberson in her Ted Talk, The science of inclusion. She reminds us that the term inclusion can still be exclusionary and maybe a better term would be fusion. The energy generated from fusion produces one of the most powerful impacts in the universe, so maybe we can use our diverse experiences to have a powerful impact on the world. 24:00 How do we implement diversity and inclusion from a leadership perspective? Act Right. Practice behaviors that actually respect one another’s humanity, identity and value the differences we each bring to the table. 26:26 Authenticity, think about bringing your whole self into a room. Be very clear and do some self-reflection on what skills you have and that you bring to the table and honor that as well. 27:28 5 Questions Segment Q1. We know that the most successful and happy people have a morning routine, what do you do each morning or evening that sets your day up for success? “Hit the snooze button, walk my dog a few miles, and have our quiet time.” Q2. What's your definition of Happiness? “Happiness is a good glass of red wine, excellent piece of chocolate cake, a good movie or a good book, and time with my family.” Q4. What do you think is the biggest issue facing busy professionals today? “The biggest scarcity right now, is attention. There are so many things competing for our attention.
