Come and join the conversation with award winning actress, writer and producer AND Director of Soho London Independent Film Festival (Soho LIFF)- Liz Farahadi!Liz talks me through her journey from the very beginning, becoming an actress and the inspiration behind starting SohoLIFF. Such an interesting and colourful life she had led, and started to notice that as an actress, the scripts she was being sent didn't really fit the narrative of the reality that she was living, and it was then that she knew that something had to change.Spurred on by the lack of representation of women like herself on our screens, Liz started writing her own material, however quickly came up against a number of stumbling blocks... The glaring ageism that she was facing really stopped her in her tracks. Not one to back down from a challenge, Liz tells me that if anything this lit even more of a fire under her and she set about creating a safe space for all voices to be heard and stories to be told. Determined to pave the way for creatives that may have been overlooked, may have not been in a financial position to enter the industry, Liz's work on this passion project soon became the beginnings of SohoLIFF. Offering mentoring for people, support, access to opportunities, SohoLIFF began to gain momentum. We chat about the inspiring ways in which it's helping creatives no matter what background they have or previous experience. We talk about her brand new film- "Keep Young & Beautiful", delving into the darker world of beauty, and the pressure on women to keep looking young at all costs. Liz excitedly tells me about the process of getting the crew together, and the instant bond they had over their shared experiences of the script. And whilst it's hard hitting in terms of subject matter, she wanted to give it a humourous edge, to allow for education and for it to resonate in a positive way! With a super impressive cast and crew for "Keep Young & Beautiful" , from an Emmy nominated Director who worked on Game Of Thrones, stars of TV shows like Eastenders, Law & Order and Dr Who, the list is amazing! We both share our thoughts on the enormous pressure for our younger generation of girls, the struggles they face, dilemmas on us as mothers and how important it is for us to make a change to allow for the next generation to benefit.Liz is passionate about also highlighting even deeper rooted issues in the beauty industry such as testing on animals, child labour, and the dark underbelly of what really goes into some of our beauty products. We chat about the lack of representation of older women on TV, how age is actually a massive advantage, having had more life experience, space to grow as a woman, and actually to be able to bring so much to the table in roles, and especially in terms of stories to tell! With the film freshly finished and the cast and crew private screening imminent, Liz has had so much support for Keep Young & Beautiful. With a shared sense of camaraderie and lived experience, she is keen to really get the message out there in the most beautifully creative way, knowing that so many others can resonate with the story. Liz hopes that people feel empowered after watching the film, and that it's the start of a huge catalyst for change. What an amazing lady, doing amazing things! You can follow Liz's journey here on her Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/lizfarahadi/Find out more about the Soho London Independent Film Festival Here:https://www.soholiff.co.uk

For a bonus episode this week, Emilio goes solo for a (mostly) spoiler free talk about a film he really loves, Ang Lee's "The Wedding Banquet". It was a successful and critically acclaimed independent film back when it was released in 1993, but has mostly stayed relevant as its esteemed director's international breakthrough. Yet it's a timeless film full of humor, compassion, and reflections on what we sacrifice of ourselves due to societal forces and the expectations of our families. Its enduring place in cinema history is evidenced by it being reimagined by writer/director Andrew Ahn - this remake can currently be seen in theaters nationwide. Emilio gets into what he enjoys so much about the original, shares his thoughts on the remake and how it is distinct from the original, and speaks with Professor Zhen Zhang, an NYU film professor who shared this film with him in an undergraduate seminar, about Ang Lee's original film. Professor Zhen Zhang is a film professor at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and the Director of the Tisch's Asian Film and Media Initiative. She has a decades long, decorated career in academia that also includes guest-curating film programs for the Film Society at Lincoln Center of Performing Arts, Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Women Make Waves Film Festival in Taipei. If you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice. On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with filmmaker, Accidental Talmudist and longtime “Jewish Journal” contributor Salvador Litvak. Litvak's Passover classic, “When Do We Eat?” stars Max Greenfield, Ben Feldman, Shiri Appleby, Lesley Ann Warren, Michael Lerner, and Jack Klugman. Litvak directed the film that he co-wrote with his wife and partner, Nina Davidovich Litvak. The Litvaks' second movie was “Saving Lincoln.” Their new film “Guns & Moses” is out this summer. “The perennial fifth question of the Passover Seder is, ‘When do we eat?'” Litvak, who is also the author of “Let My People Laugh: Greatest Jewish Jokes of All Time,” says. “There's all these holiday movies… but there was no Passover movie.” When the Litvaks made “When Do We Eat?” they were connected to Judaism, but not yet Orthodox. “The movie's probably a little bit edgier than we would make it today,” Litvak says. “One of the main plot points is that one of the kids doses his dad with a strong hallucinogen at the Passover seder, but also the movie contains wonderful spiritual teachings.” He adds, “[Our dream: that] it would become the Jewish, ‘It's a Wonderful Life,' the movie that people watch every year.” Salvador Litvak shares the backstories behind “When Do We Eat?” and his new Jewish joke book. the connections between Judaism and food, and his recipe for Sal-mon. He also talks about creating The Accidental Talmudist, how that community embraced his Passover classic film aka “My Big Fat Jewish Seder.” “My mom always used to say there's two kinds of people: those who get into conversations in the checkout line at the supermarket and those who don't,” Litvak says. “We are [the first] kind.” Learn more at SalvadorLitvak.com, AccidentalTalmudist.org, and GunsandMosesMovie.com. Check out Salvador's new book, “Let My People Laugh: Greatest Jewish Jokes of All Time.” For more from Taste Buds, subscribe on iTunes and YouTube, and follow @TheDEBMethod on social media.

Director Sally Tran joined us to discuss how everyone in the film was cast to play themselves (including her own grandmother!), the excitement and confusion that came with working with people from a small village who have probably never watched a film, and the hilarious thing her grandmother did when she felt a crew member's beard for the first time.Ben's Sister shows what happens when Ben, a high school Senior fuckboy, finds out that his sister, a Freshman, becomes a pawn in his friend's scheme to win a Senior Scavenger Hunt. Director/writer Emma Weinswig and her brother/star of the film Ben Weinswig join us to share how the story was based on their real life experience going to high school in Mill Valley, CA, the connection between rich kids and cultural appropriation, and their working relationship as brother and sister.Follow director Sally Tran on IGFollow director Emma Weinswig on IGFollow actor Ben Weinswig on IGThis episode is co-hosted by John Wildman of Films Gone WildAudio produced by Jeff Hunt of Storied: SFSupport the showThanks for listening and for your support! Send us a textWe're continuing our SXSW 2025 coverage with two documentaries centering around the strength of a mother.MOLA: A Tibetan Tale of Love and Loss, chronicles the life of Kunsang Wangmo (aka "Mola"), a 100 year-old Tibetan nun who was exiled from Tibet in 1959 and, after celebrating her 100th birthday, dreams of dying in "the religious paradise of Tibet". Co-directors (and father and daughter team) Martin Brauen and Yangzom Brauen share the importance of honoring the Tibetan community, how being so close to the material made it difficult to edit, and some beloved scenes that ended up on the cutting room floor.Uvalde Mom tells the story of Angeli Rose Gomez, a mother who rescued her children from the 2022 Robb Elementary school shooting in Uvalde, TX, while nearly 400 armed officers waited 77 minutes to intervene. We were joined by director Anayansi Prado and the film's subject Angeli Rose Gomez to discuss how Anayansi was able to gain the trust of Angeli and her family, the drama and repercussions of Angeli being thrust into the spotlight, and her cousin being a star of the film.Follow MOLA: A Tibetan Tale of Love and Loss on IGFollow director Yangzom Brauen on IGFollow director Martin Brauen on IGFollow Uvalde Mom on IGFollow director Anayansi Prado on IGSupport the showThanks for listening and for your support! John Travolta and Bruce Willis reunited – in person – for Quentin Taratino's Pulp Fiction. A critical and box office smash, the movie was just plain cool back in 1994. Loaded with iconic characters, quotable quotes, and over 260 f-bombs, the screenplay went on to win an Oscar. But now, decades later, does this foul-mouthed bloodbath need a good scrubbing? Do these wayward, drug-addicted characters just need a good therapist and a little time in rehab? Or does the film's coolness remain intact 30 years later? The Old Roommates hit the dance floor and give this iconic crowd-pleaser a revisit through their middle-aged lens. Listen to this.Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. JEROME COURSHONIn this week's episode of the Becoming Wilkinson podcast, my guest is Jerome Courshon. I met him a few weeks ago when Steve Balderson's film "Sex Love Venice" was distributed and shown at the Palm Springs Cultural Center. As an ally to the LGBTQ+ Community, Jerome loved the film and had great things to say about it. He shares his unique journey in the film industry, discussing his transition from acting to producing and eventually to film distribution. He emphasizes the importance of honesty in the industry, the challenges faced by independent filmmakers, and the evolving landscape of film distribution in the digital age. Jerome also reflects on the impact of films on relationships and the significance of creating content that resonates with audiences. He discusses the importance of integrity in personal and professional relationships, the evolving landscape of filmmaking, and the criteria for evaluating film content. He reflects on personal growth, perseverance, and the moral choices we make in life. The dialogue also touches on the impact of political discourse on personal beliefs and the balance between living a life of love versus fear. The conversation concludes with reflections on the value of meaningful discussions and the importance of staying true to oneself. Finally, as CEO of Lion Heart Distribution (launched in 2022), he has quite a bit to say about the unethical behavior in this industry.THE DETAILS:Distribution Expert and “go-to” authority of getting independent films into the marketplace for 15 years (2007 – 2022), producer Jerome Courshon launched Lion Heart Distribution in 2022. As the CEO, he serves and provides an ethical option for Producers & Directors to have success in the U.S. & Canadian marketplace with their movies, without being ripped off by unscrupulous distributors. Growth of his company was exponential in 2024, and Courshon is currently seeking investors to grow the company further. I've been thinking about doing this podcast for a long time. In the tradition of Why Filmmakers are Always So Damn Broke & What They Can Do to Change It this episode is going to be a cold bucket of water over your head if you are not ready for it. In the insane world, we are all living in today, filmmakers need to break out of the mindset that we are living in the golden age of indie cinema. The rules have changed dramatically since the 90s and even more so in the last 8 months of the COVID pandemic. The rules aren't the only thing that has changed but the game has as well. The film distribution infrastructure is broken and has been broken for many decades. It is not set up to help filmmakers make money. It is purely designed to put more money into the pockets of film distributors.I have written extensively about this in my book Rise of the Filmtrepreneur: How to Turn Your Indie Film into a Moneymaking Business. I want to put together one of my hard truths episodes to help filmmakers better understand the indie film marketplace and how to best position themselves to actually make money. There is so much talk about new cameras, lenses, rigs, post-production software, and other more interesting aspects of the filmmaking process but when it comes to selling and making money with movies filmmakers rely on old information that is no longer relevant in the current marketplace. I hope this episode empowers you to not only make more movies but to also make money while doing it.Strap yourself in because for some of you it will be a rough episode to listen to. Be well, stay safe, and keep that hustle going.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bulletproof-screenwriting-podcast--2881148/support.

We were joined by director Cameron S. Mitchell and his father/subject of the film David T.
