On this edition of Parallax Views w/ J.G. Michael, we dive into the world of climate science and denial with acclaimed author David Lipsky, discussing his latest book, The Parrot and the Igloo: Climate and the Science of Denial. Lipsky's narrative unravels the journey from the early days of climate awareness to the rise of misinformation and denialism that has shaped public perception and policy today. Lipsky explores the prophetic warnings of global warming, like the New York Times' 1956 prediction of parrots in the Antarctic, and the contrasting spectacle of Senator James Inhofe's 2010 igloo on the Washington Mall, mocking climate change with a sign reading, "Al Gore's New Home: Honk If You Love Climate Change." The discussion highlights the groundbreaking work of James Hansen, an academic at Columbia University who was an important voice warning the world about the dangers of climate change and serves as one of the real life heroes in Lipsky's book. We delve into Hansen's involvement in the Pioneer Venus project and how research into Venus's atmosphere helped scientists understand the catastrophic potential of a runaway greenhouse effect—a scenario he feared could threaten Earth's future, driving him to speak out for the sake of his grandchildren. We also delve into the role of big business in science denial, with a focus on the tobacco industry and the Phillip Morris Science Action Plan. Lipsky illustrates how tactics developed by the tobacco industry to spread doubt about the dangers of smoking were later adapted to promote climate denial. Companies used these methods to create uncertainty around the scientific consensus on global warming, employing PR strategies that aimed to manipulate public perception. Lipsky brings to light the financial interests and industries that fueled climate denial propaganda, referencing the controversial 2007 documentary The Great Global Warming Swindle. He introduces the concept of "The 25," the key figures in climate denialism, a term inspired by Steven Milloy's admission that there were only "25 of us" fighting against climate science. Lipsky traces how these denialists, some with backgrounds in defending tobacco, transitioned to spreading disinformation tied to the oil industry. The episode also touches on Lipsky's thought-provoking hypothesis about societal complicity in climate denial. While J.G. Michael suggests that powerful entities like the oil industry and groups such as the Moonies were actively pushing climate skepticism, Lipsky adds that society at large may have subconsciously wanted the denialists to be right because of our dependence on fossil fuels. He suggests that instead of taking collective action, we find it easier to blame oil companies and denialists, ignoring our own unwillingness to make lifestyle changes. This, however, is not to say that Lipsky let's oil companies and interest groups off the hook, but rather points at the way we, as a society, have failed to take action when it comes to the warming of our planet. We discuss the years of inaction on climate change by Republican administrations and the Democratic Party's missed opportunities, specifically during the presidency of Barack Obama. Despite organized climate denial losing ground in recent years, societal action on climate change remains insufficient. Figures like Bjorn Lomborg and Dr. Timothy Ball have faded into obscurity, yet Lipsky argues that our lack of decisive action indicates that we, as a society, might now be the ones in denial. Finally, we examine the influence of Republican pollster Frank Luntz, who reframed the conversation by popularizing the term "climate change" to make the issue seem less alarming and downplay the urgency of global warming. Join us for a conversation that covers the heroes and villains of climate science, the spread of disinformation, and how the American character has played a role in this tragicomic battle for the truth. Whether you're a climate advocate or curious about the history of climate skepticism, this episode offers a deep dive into one of the most critical issues of our time.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Defence Minister Richard Marles say they are confident in Australia's relationship with the United States, and the AUKUS alliance, despite U-S officials advising against sending nuclear submarines to Australia. It comes as the U-S's Democratic Chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator Jack Reed, and Republican Senator, James Inhofe, wrote a letter to President Joe Biden, saying such a move could put their own fleet and national security at risk.

Insider trading, or the act of buying or selling investments based on nonpublic information, is against the law in the United States and in most countries. At its core, insider trading benefits well connected investors at the expense of the general public and it has been illegal in the US since 1934 – at least for corporate insiders.  I made a video a few months ago on the biggest insider trading scandals, and a lot you asked in the comments section “what about politicians”?The STOCK act was passed in the wake of some controversies over stock trades around the financial crisis of 2007-2008. Its purpose was to stop members of Congress from using non-public information derived from their official positions for personal benefit. In March of last year four U.S. senators (Kelly Loeffler, Dianna Feinstein, James Inhofe & Richard Burr) were accused of using insider information about the coronavirus pandemic to profit in the stock market.  They dumped their stock holdings, including investments in travel companies, while telling the public to remain calm there was nothing to worry about. All four senators denied wrongdoing, insisting that they acted on public information and news reports and not on non-public information that they had received at senators-only briefings. The Senate Ethics Committee and the department of justice, looked into the matter eventually dropping all investigations without finding any wrongdoing. Are things likely to change? Well, a bipartisan group of lawmakers have introduced a bill called the Ban Conflicted Trading Act banning members of Congress and senior staff from buying and selling stocks, most bonds and options contracts. This is intended to prevent lawmakers and high-level staffers from enriching themselves through trades based on potentially market-moving information.Should Politicians Trade?   What should be done about Congressional Insider Trading?Patrick's Books:Statistics For The Trading Floor:  https://amzn.to/3eerLA0Derivatives For The Trading Floor:  https://amzn.to/3cjsyPFCorporate Finance:  https://amzn.to/3fn3rvC Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/PatrickBoyleOnFinanceVisit our website: www.onfinance.orgFollow Patrick on Twitter Here: https://twitter.com/PatrickEBoylePatrick Boyle On Finance YouTube Channel Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/PatrickBoyleOnFinance)

RadioPublic|LibSyn|YouTube|Patreon|Square Cash (Share code: Send $5, get $5!) Friday! The news never ends, but David Waldman does need to devote his weekends to clearing out the bats, deer and racoons coming down from the KITM hinterlands, and of course Donald Trump requires a little time to come down from whatever he’s on. (I admit that’s wild speculation on my part... I don’t know for a fact that Trump ever comes down from whatever he’s on.) Last night Trump had another Deplorable Rally, in which Donald was extra deplorable. Room temperature Mike Pence warmed up the crowd, by bragging that the justification for the Soleimani hit, and subsequent deaths of 176 civilians, was all a lie. The Trump crowd never minds any lies at their expense, as long as someone else is being lied to, also. Moscow Mitch McConnell doesn’t mind changing the rules of the Senate. That’s what the rules are for, him. Mitch told Republican Senators he plans to be bitchy and petulant next week if Nancy Pelosi lets him down. (Don’t let it be said Nancy doesn’t have a heart.) Lickspittle Lindsey Graham demands Nancy cut a few days off that.  Just in case Mitch deigns to follow a rule, what would the rules of Senate procedure and practice be for impeachment trials? Matt Gaetz steps out of line, for a second. Mike Lee is already back to the fold. The Trump Administration uses redactions to hide what they don’t want you to see. Why, is there something wrong with that? James Inhofe understands the strategic importance of attacking cultural sites, as does the Commander in Chief.  The Senate trial is coming sooner or later, so here’s your weekend primer Twitter threads on a few of the dumpster fires leading up to this moment.

We also talk about the current state of climate affairs.  In the second part of the episode, Dr. Randy Olson joins Doug to deconstruct the conversation with Marc and to see what the climate change community can learn from Marc’s tactics and motivations. In light of recent major setbacks, e.g., pulling out of the Paris Agreement, Randy analyzes Marc’s approach and offers a way forward to the climate community. Doug includes an updated wrap up, sharing his thoughts on climate change communication. Donate to America Adapts Listen to America Adapts on your favorite app here! In this Episode: AMAZONIAN ROOTS OF SKEPTICISM – Marc shares the roots of his climate skepticism and how his early work led him to the positions he now takes. SHOW ME THE MONEY? -  Marc and Doug discuss money involved on both sides of this issue. Marc discusses how he is not motivated by money but by his own certainty around climate change science. MIDDLE FINGER CLIMATE POLICIES – Marc discusses his admiration for President Trump for thumbing his nose at the establishment and pulling out of the Paris Agreement. Marc also explains how Trump could have handled the pullout more effectively. Part 2:  Randy Olson Deconstructs INTERVIEW ANALYSIS – Randy discusses Marc’s interview and explains what motivates Marc in his climate skepticism. RECOMMENDED ACTIONS – Randy provides some tough love on what the climate community can do next to effectively counter people like Marc Morano. It’s blunt but useful advice. Interviewed in this episode: Marc Morano Randy Olson *This was an unusual episode, with many references to scientific studies. Fact checking the conversation would have made it impossible to have a useful conversation, but I wanted to include a few resources related to some of the discussions in the podcast. Marc Morano on multiple occasions mentioned the study where there is 97% consensus that climate change is happening and he implied this included people studying areas impacted by climate change (he mentioned a hypothetical scientist studying butterflies) and the implication is that this person would be included in this 97% number. There are multiple studies looking at consensus on this issue, and that’s probably what he’s referring to, but there was a study looking at what publishing climate scientists are saying, and that’s where the 97% number was reached. I thought it was important to clarify that information. Delta aids downed SR22, Cessna 182s seem nose heavy but aren’t. Here’s why + how-to tips for landings that won’t crunch the nose gear. 182s and Bonanza hit by expensive service bulletin. If you're thinking of buying a new or late model Cirrus SR20 or SR22, please contact me as early in your decision making process as possible, so that I can provide you the most assistance. Landing Technique in the Cessna 182 The Cessna 182 is an excellent aircraft, but it has one knock against it that’s undeserved. Many pilots say the Cessna 182 is “nose heavy,” making it difficult to land. I respectfully disagree. The Cessna 182 is not difficult to land, IF you know how to land it properly and remain proficient through practice. And while calling it “nose heavy,” seems to match what pilots experience when landing the aircraft, an aeronautical engineer would blanch at that description. The C182 balances at its center of gravity like any other aircraft; the front end is NOT heavier than the back end. It is true that nose wheel damage and bent firewalls are common for 182s that have spent their lives as rental aircraft. So yes, it’s easier to make a bad landing in a 182 than in a 172. And those bad landings often involve the nose wheel hitting the runway before the main wheels touch down. If you want to know three simple steps for better C182 landings, skip to the end of this article. If you want to know why those steps work so well, listen to this episode! General Aviation News Two people on board a plane that crashed into the side of a mountain at Olympic National Park in Washington state on Sunday evening have survived after making a distress call picked up by a nearby Delta Air Lines flight. This is James Inhofe. He's a senator in the state of Oklahoma: "God's still up there, the arrogance of people to think that we, human beings, would be able to change what He is doing in the climate is to me outrageous". The problem is he's been the Chair of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. This is the committee that has oversight on environmenal matters in the US. And this is Pope Francis last week on climate change: "decisive action, here and now".Denial 101x is an on-line open access course run by environment researcher John Cook from the University of Queensland,  and he speaks to Dirt Radio this week about the course and why he decided to put it together. Then we head to western Victoria to talk with a spokesperson from the Otway Conservation Association about why burning native forest is not a renewable energy source and should not be included in the RET.

Jeff Sharlet is a contributing editor for Harper's and Rolling Stone, and a visiting research scholar at New York University's Center for Religion and Media, where he has taught journalism and religious studies. He is the coauther, with Peter Manseau, of Killing the Buddha, and editor of TheRevealer.org. His latest book, a New York Times bestseller, is The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power. In this in-depth interview with D.J. Grothe, Jeff Sharlet explains why secularists should not assume that just because there is a Democrat in the White House it follows that the religious fundamentalists' power has waned. He talks about how a secretive Christian political organization called The Family is founded in a doctrine of "Biblical Capitalism" and the "totalitarianism of Christ" that draws no distinction between religion, economics and politics and he recounts its origins in a supposed revelation from God that attacked organized labor and stated that Christianity has historically been overly focused on the poor, the weak and the suffering. He draws distinctions between the "pulpit pounders and the Bible thumpers" and "the fundamentalist elite," which is exemplified by The Family, which is comprised almost entirely of well-educated, affluent political and business leaders. He describes how The Family organizes Congressman into "private prayer cells," and runs the C Street House, which was made famous through the political sex scandals of Senator John Ensign and Governor Mark Sanford. He contrasts organizations like the Heritage Foundation and Christian leaders such as James Dobson and Pat Robertson with The Family, arguing that at least they are open with their agenda, as opposed to the Family, which unapologetically encourages secrecy by working to be "an invisible organization." He describes how The Family's relationship with the powerful is different than groups like Focus on the Family, and explains how their lack of rigid partisan or religious orthodoxy allows them to be more effective. He argues that The Family literally works to subvert democracy, and how the organization celebrates Hitler, Mao and Stalin as being among the few men the 20th Century who actually "understood the New Testament." He reports that The Family acts consistently as an intermediary between US Politicians and military leaders and businessman on the one hand, and overseas dictators such as the Somali dictator Siyad Barre, Ugandan dictator Museveni, and Indonesia dictator Suharto on the other hand, often with disastrous consequences. He details the history and importance of the National Prayer Breakfast to The Family's agenda. He describes ways that writing his expose has resulted in a backlash against him. He lists ways that secularists and progressives can work to reduce the influence of The Family in government. And he reveals a number of elected officials in high office who have ties to The Family, including Republican United States Senators Chuck Grassley, John Ensign, Jim DeMint, James Inhofe, Sam Brownback, and Lindsey Graham; Democratic United States Senator Mark Pryor; South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford, Former United States Attorneys General John Ashcroft and Ed Meese; and Democratic Congressmen Mike McIntyre and Bart Stupak, among others.
