Based on material in the debate and listed over on our main atheism page at kgov.com/atheism, here's a list of ten atheist clichés that can be disproved in eight seconds or less. Atheist Cliché 1: There is no truth! Theist Rebuttal: Is that true? [1 second] Okay, well then... Atheist Cliché 2: Truth is unknowable! Theist Rebuttal: How do you know? [1 second] Well then, for certain... Atheist Cliché 3: There are no absolutes! Theist Rebuttal: Absolutely? [1 second] Well, okay, but... Atheist Cliché 4: Only your five senses provide real knowledge! Theist Rebuttal: Says which of the five? [2 seconds] Ouch. Got me there. Okay, well at least... Atheist Cliché 5: Logical arguments are not "evidence." Theist Rebuttal: What is your evidence for that? [2.5 seconds] Atheist Cliché 6: Only the physical realm is real! Theist Rebuttal: That claim itself is not physical, so it's self refuting. [3 seconds] Atheist Cliché 7: Great suffering proves that a loving God cannot exist! Theist Rebuttal: The unstated assumption is false, that suffering can have no value or purpose. [4.5 secs] Atheist Cliché 8: Atheism is scientific, because science does not allow for a supernatural interpretation of an event! Theist Rebuttal: This circular reasoning tricks atheists into assuming that which they thought they proved. [5 seconds] Atheist Cliché 9: Widespread evil proves that a righteous God cannot exist! Theist Rebuttal: The two unstated assumptions are false: that love can be forced; and that some love is not worth enduring much hate. [6.5 seconds] Atheist Cliché 10: If theists claim that the universe could not have always been here, then God couldn't have always been here either. Theist Rebuttal: The natural universe is subject to the physical laws, so it would run out of useable energy; a supernatural, spiritual God is not subject to physics. [7.9 seconds] "If your worldview can be dismantled within eight seconds, then get a better one." -Bob Enyart, adapted from TheologyOnline's Battle Royale VII: Does God Exist?. At a time of book bans and the withholding of critically important struggles in our history, our education system has increasingly failed to provide our young with the tools to become engaged citizens in our much celebrated experiment in democracy. This miseducation of the young has been vastly accelerated by the shocking erosion of civic education in the standardized testing that separates winners and losers in the ranking of our meritocracy. This reality has been made painfully obvious to Lindsey Cormack, a parent of two young children and a professor of political science at the prestigious Stevens Institute of Technology, teaching a generation of young engineering students in the diminished art of civics education. Sadly, Cormack tells host Robert Scheer that many of her students don’t understand the basics of our government: “They think they're going to do this big adult thing, participate in democracy, but then they're crestfallen and they're a little heartbroken because someone didn't explain the rules to them.” Scheer responds that the failure to educate all students in civics is built into the design of national tests that omit the tools needed for participation in a vibrant democracy, and Cormack agrees: “You brought up ACT and SAT scores ... . When we have this obsession with making higher scores for all of our students and higher aggregate scores for our schools, neither one of these tests has a civics component. So in a compressed classroom day, you're going to have things that get squeezed out. And when we were interviewing teachers, we know that the things that get squeezed out are the things that aren't tested. So civics gets to the side.” In her despair at the failure of our national education system at every level to fulfill the basic condition for an informed public, Professor Cormack turned to providing parents with a comprehensive and yet highly accessible civics primer: “How to Raise a Citizen (And Why It's Up to You to Do It).” Scheer and Cormack agree that schools often gloss over topics like slavery, women’s right to vote, the Vietnam war and Native American genocide, among other topics. Cormack agrees that “governments are less accountable when their people do not understand what's happening.” She defends her book as encouragement for parents to fill the educational void. Scheer praises the book as an important effort in civics education but questions it’s dependence on those parents who have the time and knowledge to perform this educational task that should be guaranteed to all children by a responsibly functioning public education system: “It's admirable that you would write this book and get parents to do the right thing by their children and by their society. But in order for a society to be healthy, its main structures, certainly of education, have to be healthy. Cormack accepts that better parenting is not the full answer but defends her efforts as the beginning of a needed solution: “I think it is an injustice and a disservice to put a child through a K through 12 schooling environment, especially in a public taxpayer funded schooling environment and not let them know with certainty the government that they are graduating into and how they can influence it ... Do parents solve everything? No. But do enough parents ... see that there is a problem ... want schools to get involved ... have the power to lobby for school boards or to be in state legislatures to change this? I think the answer is yes. But it's not clear how we get that ball rolling unless we point out the problem, which is our kids are not learning this.”

Food stylist and chef Mariana Velásquez joins us to discuss her new cookbook, Colombiana: A Rediscovery of Recipes and Rituals from the Soul of Colombia, dedicated solely to Colombian food. AREPA DE CHOCLO (SWEET CORN AREPAS) This arepa is a different animal, with a life and a history of its own. The word choclo or chocolo comes from the Quechua language, which was spoken in the Incan empire for a millennium and is one of the few surviving indigenous languages in Latin America. We Colombians have adopted the word, as have many other cultures in the hemisphere. And for all, chocolo means the same: sweet corn. And sweet it is indeed. So much so that nowadays, just about every street fair in New York City has a sign that reads “Mozzarepas,” a registered name founded thirty-some years ago by a Colombian family in New Jersey. Chocolo arepas are sweet and cheesy. I lean toward adding both queso fresco and Manchego cheese to the dough for a more interesting taste, rather than mozzarella. But I leave it up to you. . . . The key is to get your griddle very hot so that a nice crusty outer layer forms. In my desire to make this a full meal—breakfast for dinner, that is—I toss together a tomato and avocado salad to cut through the richness. MAKES 6 AREPAS For the arepas 1 cup sweet yellow corn kernels 1 cup pre-cooked yellow cornmeal or Masa Arepa 3 tablespoons sugar¼ cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1 cup quesito or fresh ricotta cheese½ cup grated Manchego or Parmesan cheese 3 tablespoons butter, melted, plus 2 tablespoons¾ cup 2% milk For the Raw Tomato & Avocado Salad 2 cups ripe cherry tomatoes, halved crosswise 2 Hass avocados, pitted, peeled, and cubed Juice of 1 lemon 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil Flaky salt and freshly ground black pepper To serve 4 ounces quesito or queso fresco, crumbled½ cup cilantro leaves. Grind the corn in a food processor until the kernels break apart and the mixture is smooth. Transfer the ground corn to a large bowl and add the cornmeal, sugar, flour, baking powder, salt, the ricotta cheese, and Manchego cheese. Using a wooden spoon, mix the ingredients to combine. Add the 3tablespoons butter and the milk and to stir until the mixture comes together. Do not overmix. In the beginning, your mixture will look like a very loose pancake batter. Don't fret, the cornmeal will take a few minutes to absorb the liquid and achieve a better consistency. Allow the dough to rest for 10 to15 minutes. Meanwhile, prepare the raw tomato and avocado salad: In a medium bowl, combine the tomatoes and avocados. Add the lemon juice and olive oil and toss to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. Preheat a large cast-iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Melt the 2 tablespoons butter until bubbles form. Measure ½ cup of the batter and pour into the pan—pancake style. You can fry the arepas 2 at a time or more, depending on the size of your skillet. Do not crowd the skillet. Cook the arepas until golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes per side. You may need to turndown the heat as you go so that the pan doesn't get too hot from batch to batch. Place the finished arepas on the baking sheet and keep warm in the oven. Repeat with the remaining batter. To serve, plate each arepa and top with a spoonful of the tomato and avocado salad, the crumbled quesito, and cilantro leaves.

This podcast is part two of a discussion about the significance and spiritual implications of an annual phenomena known as the Burning Man Festival. Burning Man Festival is a huge outdoor event that began in 1986 that now attracts tens of thousands of participants, known as "Burners," who gather to experience everything from decadence, drugs and promiscuity to art, music, and spiritual transformation. Is this a New Religion? It may be a mistake to characterize the festival as merely an opportunity for debauchery or an excuse to throw the ultimate wild party to end the summer. In some ways, Burning Man has begun to function as both a parody of religion as well as a surrogate for traditional religion. Lee Gilmore, author of Theater in a Crowded Fire: Ritual and Spirituality at Burning Man, explained, that "the biggest [misconceptions] is to brand Burning Man as nothing more than a giant party rife with intoxicants, nudity, and bald hedonism." While acknowledging all those practices are part of the festival, they are not central to the ultimate experience that is at the very least "spiritual" if not a "semi-religious cultural happening."* Listen in as Brady Blevins, Senior Apologist at Watchman Fellowship and Steve Matthews, author of our 4-page Profile on Burning Man, discuss some of the social, cultural and spiritual questions raised by Burning Man and other transformational festivals. A discussion with Drs. McNamara and Leifer on the essentials and beyond of debriefing Hosts: Brian Gilberti, MD Audrey Tse, MD https://media.blubrry.com/coreem/content.blubrry.com/coreem/Debriefing.mp3 Download Leave a Comment Tags: Resuscitation, Simulation Show Notes TAKE HOME POINTS Debriefing after a clinical case in the ED is a way to have an interprofessional, reflective conversation with a focus on improving for the next patient. We can debrief routine cases, challenging cases, or even cases that go well. Follow a structure when leading a debrief. The prebrief sets ground rules and informs the team that the debrief is optional and will only take 3-5 minutes. Introduce names and roles Then give a one-liner about what happened in the case, followed by a plus/ delta: address what went well and why, then how to improve Finally, wrap up with take home points Pitfalls to watch out for in clinical debriefing include: Avoid siloing or alienating any learners. Learn from all your colleagues on your team- it’s less about medicine and more about interprofessional and systems issues Don’t pick on individual performance. It’s not about shaming- it’s about improving patient care Avoid “guess what I’m thinking” questions; ask real questions Proceed with caution in order to dampen or avoid psychological trauma and second victim syndrome. The learner may ask “was this my fault?”; we never want a learner to feel this way. Ask, what systems supported or did not support you today? Talk about what happened. Avoid shame and blame. Have the right values and do it for the right reasons. ADDITIONAL TOOLS
Life often throws curveballs at us, but it’s how we handle them that determines the outcome. The secret to life isn’t just knowing what God says, it’s doing what God says. In this week’s message, we were challenged to take our next step, because our purpose is not fulfilled unless it’s lived out.A message by Pastor Shawn McGill, Campus Pastor of Lifepoint Church Fredericksburg in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Do you feel like you are aimlessly praying but not seeing your miracle? Whatever your answer may be, the truth is that miracles and prayers are not based on our ability but on our availability. Fifty-four percent of American couples are choosing to live together rather than to be married. We must ask ourselves: Which “benefits” of cohabitating are you most tempted to believe? How are those “benefits” really a cheap imitation of the real thing? What are some real benefits of being single? Of being married? Is the Spirit placing someone on your mind to have an “awkward” conversation with? www.benttree.org.

Your Next StepsCompletely change your business and your life. Set up a business evaluation with a Master Business Coach at The Contractors' Coach. Listen for more!
Sin #6 – I Just Need to Sell More Jobs to Make More Money Let me ask you an important question: How much money are you actually making on each job? If you do not know the answer off the top of your head we have got a problem. You see, it is not enough just to sell more jobs. You need to sell more jobs that are more profitable. You can have all the volume in the world, but if you are earning mere pennies (or worse, are actually losing money in the process) by selling more jobs, you may be putting yourself into debt or out of business even faster! You might as well be flipping burgers – at least then you would get a free lunch every once in a while. Listen for more!
Sin #5 – I'm a Contractor, Not a Salesman! Most contractors have been there: that desperate and anxious feeling that comes when it is time to close a sale. You are worried that you will not be able to say the right thing, answer the prospects' questions in a smooth and persuasive way, prevent them from saying those dreaded words that almost always mean no: "Let me think about it." In fact, you might even feel frustrated that you have to sell at all! "After all," you say to yourself, "I'm a contractor, NOT a salesman!" Of all the sins of the mind that contractors commit, this is probably the most common (not to mention the most difficult to overcome). Fortunately, I am about to help you eliminate your fear and hesitation by showing you how to think about sales in a whole new way. Listen for more!
Sin #3 – I'm the Expert and I Know What My Customers Need (Or as one contractor, a rather cut and dry fellow, put it, “Even if my customers had a mind, they couldn't make it up!”) In the entire world of business there is only one way to make money: Find out what people want and sell it to them. Period. End of story. But so many contractors fall into the trap of completely bypassing what the customers want and head directly into what the contractor thinks they need! Look, your knowledge of your trade is critical, and you may offer the best option based on your informed opinion – but if you are not offering something your clients really want, they will not hire you; or worse, if they do hire you, they will not like you very much once the job is completed... and they will tell their friends! Listen for more!
Sin #4 – When Times Are Tough I Need to Hunker Down, Save Money, and Waitfor the Economy to Turn Let me introduce you to a fundamental business principle: You can never save your way into prosperity. Never. Similarly, you can't cost-cut your way to growth. Nor can you expand your business by hiding in it. Are we clear? You see, when times are tough, the business that used to come from referrals dries up, clients become more price- conscious, competition gets tighter, and margins shrink. And as a result, businesses collapse by the thousands. Do not fall into the same trap. The truth is, you can only spend your way to wealth. Now don't get me wrong: you must be smarter, more strategic, and more precise in the way you spend your resources – but if you want to survive, you absolutely must learn how to spend, and spend well. "Spend on what?" you are probably asking. Listen for more!
Sin #7 – If I'm Really Good at What I Do, the Business Will Come and I Will Eventually Be More Successful If there is one thing I hope this book has helped you see it is this: There is a big difference between being good at your trade and being good at your business. Most contractors strike out on their own because they have good technical skills, inherited the company from their family, or wanted to fire their boss. These are all good reasons to start a business, but as you know, they are not nearly enough to create a real lifestyle business – as opposed to a never-ending job. This last sin is about letting go of the idea that "if you build it, they will come." Yes, it is critical to provide your clients with high-quality work; but if you really want the life you say you want, you have to develop your entrepreneurial skills just as much. Listen for more!
Sin #2 – If I Want Something Done Right, I Have Got to Do it on My Own It is no secret that most contractors are in business because they are good at their trade. Business growth expert Michael Gerber says that most small business owners – and contractors are no exception – are frustrated technicians who became entrepreneurs on the side. In other words, chances are you became a contractor because you are good at a certain trade and decided to go into business for yourself. But being good at a trade and being good at running a business in that trade are two completely separate things! You need completely different skill-sets to be successful. So if you are a great plumber, it does not mean you will automatically be great at running a plumbing business. One of the most critical skills every business owner has to master is hiring. Listen for more!
About Since 2008 The Contractors Coach has been providing business coaching services to Contractors from California all the way to Sweden. We have been helping owners of construction businesses become business owners, instead of feeling like their business owns them. This includes not just developinga better business, but becoming people who think like business owners. This helps contractors develop the mindset of a successful business owner, and creates a business that is run through systems and teams. Listen for more!
Sin #1 – I Am Already Out of Time; If I Grow My Business, I Will Be Even Busier! If you are like most contractors I know, you are running yourself ragged. You make it to the end of one day only to collapse into bed for a few fitful hours of sleep, then get up and do it all over again – day after day. You are stressed; you are exhausted; your bank balance is not anywhere near where you would like it to be – but when someone asks you if you would like to grow your business, the first response out of your mouth is, "No way! I don't even have the time to handle the business I already have!" Working Hard or Working Smart? Fortunately, there is a better way.
Introduction Are you "living in sin" in your contracting business? No, no, not that kind of sin. I'm talking about the kind of "sin" that gets in the way of your ability to be successful in business. A sin of mindset, of the way you think. You see, small-minded thinking will keep your small business small – or kill it outright. On the other hand, if you can master the mindset of success it will become almost impossible for you to fail! The bottom line is that the way you think about your business as a contractor determines your success far more than anything you do. After all, every action is preceded by a thought – which means the idea had to have been there before the action occurred.
The 7 Deadly Sins of Building a Contractor Business Letter From a Contractor's Son What makes the difference between contracting companies that thrive and those that struggle and ultimately shut their doors? What are the common mistakes made over and over again by good contractors – the things that trip them up, stall growth, and kill profits? How can a contractor who works long, hard hours every day doing quality work go from just turning a wrench, fitting a pipe, or running electrical cable to actually having a business that works without him? These are the questions that Karan Dhillon, The Contractors' Coach, has helped so many contractors just like you answer over the last six years – answers that for many of these contractors have meant: more business, more profits, and finally getting the quality of life that owning a successful business can afford.

I’m not really interested in designing campaigns – I mean look, Erik, there are going to be people who disagree, they’re going to be people who aren’t interested at all. So shall I design my campaign and shall I target my efforts to the people that don’t care? You know, last night I saw this movie Amazing Grace, it wasn’t a perfect movie, but it was certainly, given the grand scheme of horrible movies these days, it was a worthwhile movie to see. It was about Wilbur Wilberforce, who actually with Richard Martin, Ithink this is accurate, that he started the RSPCA in England, but William Wilberforcewas also an abolitionist with respect to slavery. And it was very interesting, because he had to confront this very issue. That, at the time that he decided slavery should be abolished most people thought slavery shouldn’t be abolished, and yet, he didn’t propose that we ought to make slavery more humane. He took an abolitionist position continuously, and eventually he prevailed. So I’m not really interested in worrying about – yeah, are there some people out there that don’t care? You used the expression “gratuitous cruelty” I don’t even know what the hell that means, Erik. I really don’t even know what that means, gratuitous cruelty. What does that mean? We don’t need to eat animals at all. Nobody maintains – its 2007, nobody, not even the United States government maintains that we need to eat any animal products to be optimally healthy. Indeed an increasing number of mainstream healthcare people are telling us that eating animal products isn’t good for us. So, all suffering in connection with animals that we’re raising for food is gratuitous. So I don’t know what you mean when you say gratuitous cruelty. But, are there people who don’t care? Yes, Erik, there are people who don’t care, and there are a lot of people who do care. And what I’m interested in doing is reaching those people, and when I reach them, the last thing in the world I want to tell them is, “Hey look, you’re going to go from Abu Ghraib to a minimum security Connecticut prison if you buy cage-free eggs.” I’m not going to tell them that. I’m going to tell them if they care about this issue there’s one choice: go vegan. And you know what? Some people are going to turn off to that, and some people are going to turn on to that, and what I’m interested in is the people who turn on to it, because every person I turn on to it decreases demand. That’s what we’ve got to do, is decrease the demand. And the way you decrease demand is you get people to stop using these products altogether. You don’t do it by imposing opportunity costs that are so deminimist that producers can pass those costs along to consumers and not lose a cent of profit. Indeed, there is a huge markup. I don’t know if you’ve shopped at Whole Foods recently, but they’re making a lot of money. Those products are marked up tremendously. Those producers are making a tremendous profit. I don’t think that’s the solution. As a matter of fact, I’m sure it’s not."Here is my Facebook status I read out: https://www.facebook.com/NZVegan/posts/541388332629761"Listening to the second part of the debate between Gary Francione and Tim Barford. So far we are at just the first question, re: having groups like "Part-Time Carnivore" attend Veg Fest. Tim is justifying this by saying cutting down to say 20% animal products is still going to have an immensely positive effect on the environment and human health, as well as decreasing by 80% the amount of animals used.Nobody is disputing that less harm is better. Nobody is disputing that or has ever disputed that. It is not an issue that is focused on in human rights campaigning against fundamental human rights abuses like rape (I mean, less rape is better right? So should we campaign for 'less rape'? NO!!! We should and do campaign for NO RAPE!)The main theme of Tim's position and of every single other welfarist I have debated myself in various places, is the same one. Their position is: if you advocate for veganism unequivocally, not only will people not even begin to think about these issues at all, and therefore because they won't even begin to think about them that means they will therefore never start to examine their animal use, leading them to start to cut down on their animal use anyway, of their own volition, based on these issues they are beginning to think about because they were talked to about veganism - not only will they not do that, but that they will completely and utterly, down to the last person, freak out, reject the entire thing entirely, and will make NO reductions and might even increase animal use out of some kind of perverse notion and will never, ever go vegan, or ever cut down, or ever have their consciousness awoken in the slightest bit about the immorality of animal use. This is their claim. Based on this erroneous belief, they claim we *have* to promote "meat free Mondays" or "part time Carnivore" or welfare 'reforms' or 'cutting down' etc and we cannot promote veganism unequivocally or hold veganism as the moral baseline. Otherwise, they claim, NO ONE will make ANY CHANGES. EVER. That's their position.Does that make sense to you? That doesn't make sense to me either." Thanks for listening
In this episode, Sarah reads two open-access palaeopathology articles.Simona Minozzi, Federica Bianchi, Walter Pantano, Paola Catalano, Davide Caramella and Gino Fornaciari, (2013) "A Case of Gout from Imperial Rome (1st-2nd century AD)." J Clin Res Bioeth 4:4. Abstract: The study of pathological alterations in ancient skeletal remains may contribute to the reconstruction of the history of diseases and health conditions of ancient populations. Therefore, in recent research palaeopathology provides an important point of view in bioarchaeology and medicine. This work describes the bone alterations observed in the skeleton of an adult woman found during archaeological excavations in the greatest necropolis of the Imperial Age in Rome. The skeletal remains showed some pathological anomalies and the most evident alterations consisted of multiple osteolytic lesions involving mainly the small bones of the feet, which presented round cavitations and scarce signs of bone repair. Differential diagnosis suggests that this individual was affected by gout, probably associated with hypothyroidism that determined her short stature. Article Link.S. Minozzi, A. Lunardini, P. Catalano, D. Caramella, G. Fornaciari, (2013) "Dwarfism in Imperial Rome: A Case of Skeletal Evidence." J Clin Res Bioeth 4:154. [No Published Abstract]This article explores a skeleton that shows signs of dwarfism excavated from the Collatina necropolis in eastern Rome. Skeletal evidence for dwarfism in this time period is extremely rare, and this find allows a bioarchaeological window into an occurrence largely known in antiquity from literature and art. Perhaps what was most interesting to me was the discussion toward the end of the article to do with the shift from acceptance to rejection of dwarfs between the Roman and Christian periods.Article Link. David Rohrbacher (NCF) is a prominent scholar of late antique historiography. In this important article, he weighs in on the sources of the (in)famous Historia Augusta. If you like this article, I would try his excellent book, Historians of Late Antiquity. "Abstract: The first step toward unravelling the mysteries of the late Roman biographical collection called the Historia Augusta is to separate out the authentic historical material from the fictions which the author offers in abundance. This article presents a careful re- examination of the evidence for the sources of each section of the work, concluding that the author draws upon Enmann’s Kaisergeschichte and its progeny, Marius Maximus, Herodian, Dexippus, and, for the last Lives, a Greek source, perhaps Eunapius."Link to Histos Table of Contents.Link to the Article PDF.Link to the Podcast. TRANSFORMATIONSJazz guitarist Roni Ben-Hur has earned a sterling reputation as a musician and educator, renowned for his golden tone, improvisational brilliance, compositional lyricism and ability to charm peers, students and listeners alike. Eminent jazz critic Gary Giddins wrote in the Village Voice: "A limber and inventive guitarist, Ben-Hur keeps the modernist flame alive and pure, with a low flame burning in every note... [He's] a guitarist who knows the changes and his own mind." Ben-Hur - born in Israel in 1962 but a longtime American citizen, now based in New Jersey - has released nine albums as leader or co-leader, with Time Out New York calling him "a formidable and consummately lyrical guitarist." The Star-Ledger of New Jersey summed him up this way: "A deep musician, a storyteller, Ben-Hur works with a warm, glowing sound and has an alluring way of combining engaging notes with supple rhythm." Along with releasing acclaimed educational products - including the instructional DVD Chordability and method book Talk Jazz: Guitar - Ben-Hur has directed international jazz camps for nearly 15 years. Jazz guitar star Russell Malone got it right when he said: "Everything Roni does is beautiful. He has the magic touch."Ben-Hur's latest album is Our Thing (Motéma Music, 2012), a co-led trio project with Panamanian-born bassist Santi Debriano that also features Brazilian drummer Duduka Da Fonseca. Marked by soulful grooves, telepathic interplay and a rich, organic ensemble sound, Our Thing ranges from deeply swinging interpretations of Thelonious Monk's "Green Chimneys" and Irving Berlin's "Let's Face the Music and Dance" to a pair of poetic tunes by Antonio Carlos Jobim and several beautiful originals that channel the players' Middle Eastern, Latin and Brazilian heritages through a post-bop prism. One of Ben-Hur's compositions is a fresh rendition of a longtime favorite in his songbook: "Anna's Dance," written for one of his two daughters. DownBeat called Our Thing "mesmerizing," while New York City Jazz Record captured it colorfully: "Ben-Hur, Debriano and Da Fonseca sway with the grace of palm trees, exuding a laidback introspection." The Buffalo News encapsulated the album by describing it as "delectable jazz internationalism of near-Olympic variety. Ben-Hur and Debriano are players of first-rate fluency and taste."Ben-Hur's family relocated from Tunisia to Dimona, Israel, where he was born into large family - teaching him good ensemble values early on. The guitarist began playing in wedding bands and in Tel Aviv clubs as a teenager enraptured by the recordings of Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, Jim Hall and Kenny Burrell. The young musician also came to love the classical Spanish repertoire via Segovia, hearing a Moorish sound that resonated with his family's North African roots. Later, after moving to New York in 1985, he would fall for Brazilian music, particularly through the work of guitarist-composer Baden Powell. When Ben-Hur came onto the New York jazz scene, he was fortunate to be taken under the wing of veteran jazz pianist Barry Harris, a Monk disciple and Grammy Award-winner who led the influential Jazz Cultural Theater during the mid-'80s in Manhattan. The up-and-coming guitarist played in Harris's band, absorbing musical wisdom and life lessons.Teaching has become increasingly important to Ben-Hur over the years, as he has developed an international reach as an educator. As founder and director of the jazz program at the Lucy Moses School at the Kaufman Center in Manhattan since 1994, Ben-Hur has educated a multitude of jazz enthusiasts in ensemble playing, improvisation and jazz guitar. Along with his jazz camp with Santi Debriano in the South of France, Ben-Hur led camps for years in Patterson, N.Y. More recently, through his company Adventures in Jazz - which he operates with his wife, singer Amy London - Ben-Hur conducts jazz camps in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, in Istanbul, Turkey, and in Schroon Lake, N.Y., teaching workshops in straight-ahead jazz, Latin jazz and Brazilian jazz with Debriano and other teachers. With Brazilian bassist Nilson Matta, Ben-Hur also co-leads Samba Meets Jazz camps in Paraty, Brazil, and in Bar Harbor, Maine. With his partner in the Samba Meets Jazz camps, bassist Nilson Matta, Ben-Hur released the album Mojave (Motéma, 2011), which also featured drummer Victor Lewis and percussionist Café. The album was the second in Motéma's Jazz Therapy series. The series was co-founded by Ben-Hur and the label to raise money and awareness for the Dizzy Gillespie Memorial Fund of New Jersey's Englewood Hospital and Medical Center Foundation, which provides care for uninsured jazz musicians. The first album in the series wasSmile, Ben-Hur's 2008 duo set with veteran guitarist Gene Bertoncini.Ben-Hur and Matta are each masters of a musical tradition, the guitarist with bebop and the bassist with samba. Mojave sees them meld the two worlds, in league with New York jazz drummer Victor Lewis and Brazilian percussionist Café. They range from pieces by such Brazilian icons as Jobim, Baden Powell and choro pioneer Pixinguinha to Burt Bacharach's "The Look of Love" and deftly rhythmic originals by all four players. One of Ben-Hur's contributions is the moody beauty "Eretz" (Hebrew for "land"), another of his signature tunes interpreted afresh. The Rochester City Newspaper offered a glowing review of the album: "Mojave is magical from start to finish... The combination of Matta's samba and Ben-Hur's swing is a marriage made in heaven.Acclaim for Smile, Ben-Hur's dual-guitar album with Gene Bertoncini, was equally wide-spread. The New York Times lauded the "sophisticated and lyrical" musicianship, and DownBeat simply called the album "stunning," as the players stretch from the Charlie Chaplin title track and the Arlen-Mercer standard "Out of This World" to an enterprising take on Roberta Flack's hit "Killing Me Softly" and two of Ben-Hur's personal standards - his "Anna's Dance," written for one daughter, and "Sofia's Butterfly," penned for the other. Jazz sage Nat Hentoff praised the "lyrically meditative dialogue" between the two guitarists in the Wall Street Journal, while the Washington Post was enamored by "the dazzling dexterity and tasteful elegance of these duets."Two other key albums in Ben-Hur's discography are Fortuna (Motéma, 2009) and Keepin' It Open (Motéma, 2007), both quintet sets with piano vet Ronnie Matthews and ultra-swinging drummer Lewis Nash, plus percussionist Steve Kroon. Keepin' It Open, which also includes bassist Santi Debriano and trumpeter Jeremy Pelt in the group, has a wide purview, from Monk's rollicking "Think of One" to a dark-hued old Sephardic melody, "Eshkolit." Tapping into his family's Sephardic Jewish roots and his love of the Spanish classical guitar repertoire, Ben-Hur recasts Granados' "Andaluza" as an ensemble piece. And the guitarist's originals include the finger-snapping "My Man, Harris," a tribute to his mentor Barry Harris. JazzTimes called the album "a delight from start to finish," while critic Scott Yanow singled out the guitarist on All Music, saying that Ben-Hur "can swing as hard as anyone."Fortuna, which has Rufus Reid on double-bass, sees Ben-Hur recast Albéniz's "Granada" with an ear for the early Israeli popular music influenced by the Moorish sound. Along with two Jobim numbers, the disc includes the Irving Berlin ballad "I Got Lost in his Arms" and Ben-Hur's funky original "Guess Who." Jazz scholar Dan Morgenstern listed Fortuna as one of his top 10 discs of 2009. JazzTimes described the album this way: "A keen story teller, Ben-Hur's dexterous, melodic and emotive playing is supported by a tight-knit cast of stellar musicians... his skill and warm tone underscoring the band's chemistry." All About Jazz said, "Fortuna is a sparkling ode to the brightness of life."Ben-Hur's album Signature (Reservoir, 2005) put the guitarist in the company of pianist John Hicks, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Leroy Williams, again plus percussionist Steve Kroon. The tracks include the first appearance of Ben-Hur's gem "Eretz," plus two pieces by Villa-Lobos and tunes by Jobim and Cole Porter. DownBeat said: "Signature is a collection of consummately played music that matches the six-stringer's consistently creative melody reading, soloing and comping with the supportive work of superb sidemen. Ben-Hur's original compositions are similarly impressive, from opening burner 'Mama Bee,' which dazzles with a brilliantly constructed guitar solo, to 'Eretz,' a gorgeous ballad intended as a tribute to the guitarist's native Israel that feels like an instant standard."For Anna's Dance (Reservoir, 2001), Ben-Hur convened a combo of elders: Barry Harris on piano, Charles Davis on saxophone, Walter Booker on double-bass and Leroy Williams on drums. The highlights include the debut of Ben-Hur's title composition, as well as the Billy Strayhorn ballad "A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing." In the Village Voice, Gary Giddins said: "As eloquent as a cool breeze, this understated exercise in bebop equilibrium goes down so easy that you might underestimate the magic. Ben-Hur and Charles Davis, who trades in his Sun Ra baritone for suave tenor, speak Harris's lingo like natives." Ben-Hur's kick-started his discography with two bebop showcases.Sofia's Butterfly (TCB, 1998) saw the guitarist - with drummer Leroy Williams and bassist Lisle Atkinson in tow - offering much promise; there's the ultra-fluid virtuosity of his take on Monk's "Four in One," not to mention the first appearances of his original title tune and "Fortuna." Ben-Hur made his initial splash on record with Backyard (TCB, 1996), which presented him with the Barry Harris Trio.In addition to leading his own bands, Ben-Hur has shared the stage and the studio not only with the heroes and great peers mentioned above but with the likes of Cecil Payne, Etta Jones, Marcus Belgrave, Charles McPherson, Jimmy Heath, Clark Terry, Slide Hampton, Earl May, Teri Thornton and Bill Doggett. Ben-Hur regularly performs in the top jazz venues and in major festivals across the country and around the world. As an educator, he has established jazz programs in New York City high schools, along with presenting workshops for students of all ages in the U.S. and Europe. His instructional releases include the DVD Chordability (Motéma, 2011), which offers 20 lessons on chord voicings and jazz harmony for intermediate and advanced guitarists. He also translated "the Barry Harris method" to guitar with the publication Talk Jazz: Guitar (Mel Bay, 2003), which has appeared in English and Japanese editions.Ben-Hur’s latest album is Our Thing (Motéma Music, 2012), a co-led trio project with Panamanian-born bassist Santi Debriano that also features Brazilian drummer Duduka Da Fonseca. Marked by soulful grooves, telepathic interplay and a rich, organic ensemble sound, Our Thing ranges from deeply swinging interpretations of Thelonious Monk’s “Green Chimneys” and Irving Berlin’s “Let’s Face the Music and Dance” to a pair of poetic tunes by Antonio Carlos Jobim and several beautiful originals that channel the players’ Middle Eastern, Latin and Brazilian heritages through a post-bop prism. One of Ben-Hur’s compositions is a fresh rendition of a longtime favorite in his songbook: “Anna’s Dance,” written for one of his two daughters. DownBeat called Our Thing “mesmerizing,” while New York City Jazz Record captured it colorfully: “Ben-Hur, Debriano and Da Fonseca sway with the grace of palm trees, exuding a laidback introspection.” The Buffalo News encapsulated the album by describing it as “delectable jazz internationalism of near-Olympic variety. Ben-Hur and Debriano are players of first-rate fluency and taste.”To Visit Roni Ben-Hur's website CLICK HERE

Boundaries & Legacies by Dr Christine (To hear this sermon click on the title directly above)(Description)God has pre-appointed our times & boundaries. Jonathan experimented living life outside of his Father the Kings way of doing things. It almost got him killed. The people saved him from the decree of His Father. Why did’nt His Father step up and establish a new decree, after all He was the King and capable of doing so. What was it that kept King Saul from stepping up to save His Son’s life. It is the same thing that is killing the spiritual lives of many spiritual and natural sons & daughters today. Don’t die, listen & live. www.SpiritSongInternationalMinistries.org Spirit Song International Podcast Powered by Genuine Life Media
The January talk by David Saetre will focus on the theme of “hope.” This is the third and last in his series on spiritual virtues. You may have heard the popular saying, “hope is not a plan,” and the dismissive tone of that phrase sums up a cynical side to modern society. Indeed, hope is often synonymous with magical thinking or unrealistic expectations that avoid personal responsibility and the hard work of building a better world. Yet, while hope is not a plan, no one can plan without it. Because the future always includes ambiguity and surprise – things rarely turn out exactly how we plan them – all plans require some level of risk. Hope is the way in which we launch our dreams and visions into actions. All good plans have their roots in hope. But, hope in what? That’s what we will explore at our gathering on the second Sunday in January. The topic seems right as we begin a new year, filled with our own resolutions, dreams and expectations for our families and community. And, the topic of hope carries particular importance in the wake of the Sandy Hook school shootings, and our national sense of vulnerability and sorrow. Join David and the faculty, staff and students of Northland as we begin a new year of worship, thoughtful reflection and building community together around the theme of “Hope!” Listen thru iTunes or download at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16150915/uu/2013W/1-13-13m.mp3
