Harvest Bible Chapel Pittsburgh North Sermons - Harvest Bible Chapel Pittsburgh North

Introduction: Philippians 2:3-7 – Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 3 Reasons I Want to Fight for Unity (1 Corinthians 1:10-17) Because I Am RESPONSIBLE for the Church's REPUTATION. (1 Cor 1:11) John 13:35 – By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. John 17:20–21 – I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. Because FIGHTING is FOOLISH. (1 Cor 1:12–13) Because DISUNITY DISTRACTS from the Mission. (1 Cor 1:14–17) Sermon Notes (PDF): BLANKHint: Highlight blanks above for answers! Why or why not?How exactly do “words of eloquent wisdom” end up “emptying the cross of its power” (1 Cor 1:17)? What does this say about how we should evaluate a sermon?BreakoutPray for one another. AUDIO TRANSCRIPT Open up those Bibles. The first Corinthians in chapter 1.But as we turn to God's Word, I'm going to ask,we just pause for a second and please pray for meto faithfully communicate what God has said in His Word, and I will pray for you to have a heart open to receivewhat it is that the Lord wants to teach us from His Word today.Alright, let's pray.Father, just now we're turning to Your Word, and I pray that our minds and hearts would be just so focusedon what You said, and that we are eager to obey what it is You've laid out for usin Your Word.We pray in Jesus' name. And all of God's people said,"Amen."The first Corinthians, chapter 1.You know, every so often at harvest Bible chapel,we do a Q&A day where we take questions from the congregationand answer them, and I think it was the last Q&A day.We had a very - a question that kind of threw me for a loop.I was wondering who asked it and why.But the question was, do the leaders of the church like each other?Well, you know, we're working on seeking the Lordon building a church building on a piece of propertyup in New Sewickley. And there is wind of opposition to building, which probably means building is of the Lord, because that's what happens, right?Read the book of Nehemiah. But in our staff meeting,in my office around the conference tables,we were in a staff meeting, and our children's director, Missy Howes,I got permission to tell this story, by the way.But our children's director was telling us aboutone of the individuals who is sort of against us buildinga building on that property. And then Missy capped off her updateby turning to Pastor Rich, and she said, "Yeah, she's really going after you people."And I said, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. You people."I said, "Well, at what point, Melissa, did you go from staff memberof the biggest demographic of our churchto now it's you people?"And we have been laughing about that ever since. And if you know Missy, it's even funnier. But how quickly some people actually seriouslydetached themselves from the church? How quickly people detach themselves, and they don't see themselves as part of the body, don't see themselves as wanting what's actually bestfor the body as a whole. How many people show of handshave ever been involved in a churchwhere there's been fighting?Raise your hand. All right? How many people have ever been involved in a churchwhere there was a split?Raise your hand.Way too many of you.All right? Way too many. But listen, it's nothing new. It's been happening from the very beginning of the church. And it just seems common nowbecause there's more churchesand there's easier ways to communicate in our day.But it happens.Fighting and divisions in the churchis unfortunately one of the sinsthat the church has been dealing with since day one.Last week as we started 1 Corinthians, the Apostle Paul told the Corinthian church, look, the foundation for unityhas to be in knowing your salvation. That has to be the foundation. You have to know the grace of Godby which you're saved. You have to know that He has gifted you to serve. You have to know that you are guiltlessin the day of Christ Jesus. He will sustain you. That's how Paul starts the letter. In Jesus Christ. Now, act like it.And that's the theme of the whole book of 1 Corinthians. You know, the Corinthian church, they had a lot of problems.Have you read this book? They had a lot of problems. They had a lot of problems concerning sexualityand marriage and libertyand worship and spiritual giftsand the resurrection of Jesusand money. And Paul wrote this book.He wrote them this letter to correcttheir sinful problems. But you know,Paul must have thoughtthat their biggest problemwas disunity. The fighting.Because this is what he addresses firstin the letter.Look at verse 10.And really, verse 10 could have beenthe only thing he wrote in the whole book. And this is like the point. He says, "I appeal to you brothersby the name of our Lord Jesus Christthat all of you agreeand that there be no divisions among youbut that you be united in the same mindand the same judgment."Now, verse 10 obviously flows from verse 9.And verse 9, he tells the church that they,by extension, we are called into the fellowshipof His Son.And that's a foundation herefor the Corinthian church and for Harvest Bible Chapel. This is not my church. This is not Pastor Taylor's church.Corinth was not Paul's churchor Apollos' church.Harvest Bible Chapel,it's not your church.Whose church is it?It's God's church. And you're like, "Man Pastor Jeff,if only there was a way that you could remind us of thaton the regular."What do you think this is?Do you know what this is?It's an arrow. That's all it is.It's a fancy arrow. But that's, people ask me,"What's this symbol mean?"It's just an arrow. And this is to remind us why we're here. We're here for God.We're here to exalt His Son.We're here to proclaim His Word. That's all that is.It's a constant reminder. It's not about me.It's about Him.So Paul says he's appealing that what?He says that all of you agree.Like, "All right, agree."Agree on what?Agree on politics.Agree on who is the best football team.Agree on who makes the best pizza. What are we agreeing on?Well, there's two things, church, that we have to absolutely agree on.And number one is doctrine. We should all agree on what we believe. Now listen, we might have different viewson things like an eschatological timelineor the doctrine of election or whatever, whatever. But on the major points of doctrine, we must agree. If you're like, "I'm not sure if I should agree on thisor if I should fight about this."Well, there's things that there are hills to die on.Things like the authority of God's Word. That's something we should all agree on.Things like the person and work of Jesus Christ. We should all agree on that.He is God who became man, who died to take away sin,who rose from the dead to give eternal life, who is coming again. We should all agree on that.Speaking of, we should all agree on salvation. How does somebody get saved? It's through faith in Jesus Christ. It's receiving the gift of eternal lifethat God has given through Jesus. We should all agree on that. All the stuff we talked about last week,we should all agree that is how a person gets saved. We should all agree on the mission of the church. We're not here to scratch itchy ears. We're not here to make a nice social club.We are here to make disciples. Those are things we should agree on.And that's what Paul goes on to say, that there will be no divisions among you.Literally, divisions in the Greekcan be translated no difference of opinion.Paul says, you should not have a difference of opinion. We should all have the same opinion. And you're like, what? Jeff, yours? No.We should all have God's opinion.See, that should be the mindset of this church. It's like, well, what do you think about abortion? What does God think about abortion? What do you think about marriage? What does God think about marriage? That should be our opinion too. What do you think about work? What does God say about work? What should share His opinion? What do you think about parenting? You got any opinions about parenting?Yeah, I do got opinions about parenting. It's God's opinion about parenting. What does the Bible say?We should all be agreeing on doctrine. And another thing we should all be agreeing on is submission.Look at verse 10.He says that you be united in the same mindand the same judgments. You see, doctrine speaks to what we believe.Submission speaks to how we act.In other words, unity - listen, unity will occur naturallywhen we agree on doctrine and live in submission to one another. Now, I hesitated to even bark up this treebut I felt like we had tobecause this could be a whole other sermon series. But look at what Paul told the Philippian church. What is the attitude that we're supposed to have, this attitude of submissionthat's going to result in unity? He tells the Philippians,he says, "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Each of you look not only to his own interestsbut also to the interests of others.Have this mind among yourselveswhich is yours in Christ Jesus.Though he was in the form of God,did not count equality with God, a thing to be grasped. He got emptied himself by taking the form of a servantbeing born in the likeness of man."That's saying a lot. There's a couple of things I want to highlight from that.Regarding submission that unifies us,unity is destroyed when we start thinking,"It's all about me.My ideas are the best.My ideas are the smartest.Everyone should do what I want in the churchand the church will be good."He says, "Each of us, we have to humble ourselvesthat we consider others more important than you. That you walk in the doors and you're like,"Everybody here is more important than me."Unity comes when we all share that mindset. How do we do that?Well, he tells us in Philippians,"We have to have the mind of Christ."He says a lot like I said. We've preached on this a couple of times in past time.Look at that next to last statement. That's the one that really jumps out to me.Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, took the form of a servant. This is where the attitude of submission comes. When you walk in the doors, not to say,"Okay, things need to happen my way.I'm going to set everything straight. You need to walk in the doors and say,"I'm here to serve.I'm a servant."If God was willing to make Himself a servant,as an example, I should have the same mindset, right? So are you?Are you a servant?Well, we'll know when somebody treats you like one, whether you are or not. We'll know when you don't get your own wayif you really see yourself as a servant.Really, Paul could have stopped it.Verse 10 says so much here in 1 Corinthians 1.He could have stopped there. But he goes on to lay out three reasons whywe should each do our part for unity. So on your outline, I want you to jot some things down.Three reasons I want to fight for unity.Like, you want to fight about something? You want to fight? Okay.Let's fight for unity.Let's fight for that. You're like, "Well, why do I want to do that?"Well, Paul tells us, number one, because I am responsible for the church's reputation.Because I am responsible for the church's reputation.Look at verse 11.He says, "For it has been reported to me by Chloe's peoplethat there is quarreling among you, my brothers."There are Chloe's people.Do you know what we call them today?Whistleblowers. Right?Do you know what we called them when I was a kid?Do you know what we called whistleblowers when I was a kid?A "nark."How many people remember "nark"?Okay, somebody tattles to the teacher on you."You nark."They weren't getting. They weren't being narks. They weren't being narks. No.I don't know who Chloe's people are.The Bible doesn't really tell us.But here's what we do know. They were so concerned over the fighting that was happening in the churchthat they had to get a message to Paul. And it would have been a lot harder in that day. They couldn't have just posted something on Instaor sent Paul a text. Right? So Chloe's people were concerned. And Paul's like, "This is the reputation that's getting back to me."Chloe's people says, "All you do is fight."Not good.I heard a commercial just the other dayfor a product that I didn't even know existed. It's called the Reputation Defender. How many people have heard of the Reputation Defender?Okay, Randy. Okay, me and Randy.Okay, so only a few of us heard that commercial. All right? The Reputation Defender.Do you know what this is? I had to look it up online.I was so intrigued by the commercial, Randy.I had to look it up online.Since 2006, a leader in online reputation management. What they do is they - and again, this is from their website -they fix online search results and remove personal information.Meaning, if there's bad stuff about you on the Internet, they erase it.If somebody, you know, whether you're applying for a jobor you just want to sort of clean up your reputation,it's just, whoop, it's erased from the Internet. It's gone. Like, that part of you no longer exists. It's just, whoop, gone. And I heard that commercial. And I'm like, man, I wish we had this for other things. You know what I mean? You know what I mean? Like, I do something stupid at homeand I upset Aaron.I wish that I could just be like, whoop, gone.Or, have you ever been like at a partyand you meet somebody and you say something really awkwardand stupid and you're like, why did I say that?Wouldn't it be nice to just be like, whoop, now nobody remembers that?Right?Or you got ejected from the church softball gamebecause you lost your temper.Whoop.Well, you know, there is no such service for the church.I think with the church more than probably just about any organization on the planet, the reputation sticks. For better or for worse, the reputation sticks. And if you're like, well, I really don't care what people think about me.Okay, do you care what people think about Jesus?Because this unity doesn't just affect the church's reputation. It reflects on Jesus himself.Look at John 13.35 here. We're going to have it on the screen.Jesus said, by this all people will know that you are my disciplesif you have love for one another. Now, you know what I want to think Jesus said here?My mind wants to make it say that Jesus was like, the world is going to know that you love the worldby the way that you love the world. That's not what he said.He said the world is going to know that we are disciples of Jesus, not by how we love them, but by how we love each other. Our reputation for unity, according to our Lord, confirms our discipleship to the world, and it also directly affects our witness.Jesus, again, you jump over to John 17.Jesus praying specifically for us, for Harvest Bible Chapel. You see it right here. Jesus is praying.I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their Word. That's us.We believe through the Word.He says that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me and I and you, that they also may be in us.Why does Jesus want us to be one? Here's a reason. He says so that the world may believe that you have sent me.Our witness church is directly affected by our oneness.I mean, that just makes sense, doesn't it?I mean, it just follows.I mean, if you're talking to your neighbor about churchand you say things like,"Well, you know what at Harvest Bible Chapel, our worship leader can't stand our children's director."I mean, our children's director is constantly throwing fire at staff meetings, and the worship leader just has had enough. And then you tell your neighbor,"Oh, he is way too aggressive with people."And you're like, "Well, how's the youth group?"And they say, "How's the youth group?"You're like, "Well, youth group is nice, but you know what those youth group moms, all they do is fight."That's all they do.They're just constantly fighting and arguing and bickering about everything. And then you turn to your neighbor and say,"Hey, would you like to come to our church sometime?"And they're like,"Not a chance. Why would I want to walk into that circus?"Our witness is affected by our reputation.Jesus prayed that we would be one.He died so that we would be one.So our reputation that we should have is that we are one.So, nix the clicks.Alright?Nix the clicks. Why?Because you're responsible for our reputation. You're responsible for our reputation.Number two, why I want to fight for unity? Why I want to nix the clicks?Number two, because fighting is foolish.Fighting is foolish.Look at verses 12 and 13.Paul is calling them out on their foolish immaturity. He says, "What I mean is that each one of you says,'I follow Paul,' or 'I follow Apollos,' or 'I follow Cephas,'that's Peter, or 'I follow Christ.'"Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you?Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?See what he's doing? He's pointing out how stupid this is.Why are you fighting about this stuff?Verse 12, he says, "Each one of you, each one of you, you should have that underlined."Why?Because when there's this unity, who do we blame?Everybody else, right?Paul's like, "This is not an everybody else problem. This is a you problem."Stop blaming everybody else. What are you doing for unity at the church? And you see, they were boasting about which ministerthey identified with. Some people were like, "I follow Paul."I mean, Paul was pretty great, huh?Like, what an awesome missionary, right?Apostle to the Gentiles and endured so much hardshipand was so faithful in his ministry. And it's easy to see why there were people that loved Paul. But some maybe overly attached to him, right? But then you have the people that were like, "Paul, okay."Paul's okay. But you know who really is the best minister is Apollos.Apollos was known for his eloquence.Apollos was a fantastic speaker. We learned about that in the book of Acts. And I'm sure that there were people here that were like,"You know what? Paul might have good theology, but there ain't nobody that preaches a sermonas beautifully as Apollos. He is the best preacher I've ever heard."And then you had people that are like,"You both are whack."Paul?Apollos? No, no, no, no, no, no.Cephas.That's Peter, right?Like, how can we even be arguing about this?Peter!OG!Peter!Right?Like, he wasn't just like one of the disciples. He was like one of Jesus' besties. And he was there for all of it.And he had some ups and downs. And look at what, look at like Pentecost. And Peter is the man.And then you had people that just had the Jesus Duke, everybody, that are like, "Oh, you like human ministers?"Well, I follow Christ.Doesn't that just sound so pious?I follow Christ. You see what the Corinthian church was doing? It was the adult version, the church version,of, "My dad can beat up your dad."Right? It's, "My pastor cannot preach your pastor."Aren't all four of these men preaching the same gospel?Oh, by the way, the last group there, I follow Christ. You're like, "Wait, wait, wait.Isn't that who we want to follow?"Yes.Jesus.Obviously.But somehow they turned even thatinto an occasion for fighting. And you're like, "Well, how in the world could somebody pull that off?"Well, people still do it today.People still do that today.Like, what do you mean? You heard these people that are like,"Oh, I don't need to go to churchbecause I have a relationship with Jesus. So I don't need church."You can't defend that biblically. There is no such thing as a Christian detached from a church body. There is no such thing.Several years ago, there was the whole short-lived15 minutes of fame of the whole,"I love Jesus but hate the church."You remember that?"I love Jesus but I hate the church."Doesn't that just sound so pious? It sounds so obnoxious."I love Jesus but I hate the church."Bad idea. You know what the church is?The church is the bride of Christ. And if you came to me and you said,"I love you, Pastor Jeff, but I hate your wife,"we're going to have some problems.I think that's what was going on here. That there were people that were like,"Oh, I don't need churches and preachersbecause I have Jesus."And look, there are some things,as we said earlier, that are worth fighting for. There are some things I will fight to the death for.Things like preaching the Word of God.Things like biblical music.Things like confronting unrepentant sin. Those are the things that the church should be fighting for.But sadly, when there's fighting in the church, those aren't usually the kinds of thingsthat people are fighting over.Honestly, church, we find weird things to divide over, just like the Corinthians. We just come up with all kinds of stupid things to fight about. You want to hear some examples of some of the stupidest things?I don't have time to give all of them. But over the years, I've heard so many stupid thingsthat people fight about. Here's one.I had a friend that attended a church. And I'm like, "Hey, how things are going at your church?"And he goes, "Oh, Jeff, we're really in a bad spot right now.Everybody's fighting."Like, what's the problem?People are really upset with each otherand people are not talking to each other. And it's gotten really ugly.I'm like, "What are we fighting about at this church?"He says, "Well, when you walk in the entryway, there's a bulletin board. And they're fighting about how to divide it up among the ministries.Because the Sunday school thought they were getting all of it,and they were told they can get half, and they wanted to divide it this way.But no, no, no, the mission department wanted to divide it this way, blah, blah, blah."And he goes, "It is nasty."I'm like, "Are you serious?"He's like, "Yeah."He goes, "What do you think we should do?"I said, "I think you should rip that bulletin board off the walland throw it in the garbage. That's what I think you should do."He's like, "Well, that's evangelism."I said, "No, it's not.The only people are seeing itare the people who are walking in the door."I said, "If it's causing that much division, trash it."Isn't that dumb? Here's another one.My old church, there was a familythat had four daughters at the timethey were early adolescents to teenage years. And there were people at the churchthat were upset with this family. They said, "Those girls are a clique. Those girls are a clique. Those girls are sisters."And now we're demonizing thembecause they like each other? There were people angry at thembecause they got along.Isn't that stupid? This might be the stupidestthat I have a pastor friend. He was a pastor for a church up in Canada.Every Christmas they had a tradition.Like, for years,at the end of the Christmas service, this is true, and I can't say without laughing, but this is true,at the end of the Christmas service every year, they sang "Feliz Navidad."You know that horrible song? You know the one I'm talking about?"Feliz Navidad.""Feliz Navidad."Oh, that's so cringe.Well, this new pastor cameand he's like, "You know what? There's not really spiritual contentin that song, and let's really focus our attentionof worship towards, I don't know, Jesus."So let's not sing that song this year.It caused a church split. And my pastor friend said,"I've never seen people so angry."Over one of the worst songs ever written.Isn't that dumb?We find such weird things to divide over. That was the Corinthians. They had their dumb thing too.He was the best preacher. That's why in verse 13,Paul gives some questions that we can unify here, right?Because these questions require us allto give the same answer.Right? Let's try it.Let's see if we get the same answer.Question number one.I'm going to ask the question, you shout out the answer. Is Christ divided? No. Obviously not, right?Christ is not divided.Alright, question two.And now they get harder. Was Paul crucified for you? No.Alright, final question. Were you baptized in the name of Paul?No.Meatballs.Alright, look.I want you to hear me very closely here. There is nothing wrong with having a favorite preacher.I do.There's a preacher who's podcast I listen to all the time. There is nothing wrong with that.Okay? We clear on that. There's nothing wrong with that.I encourage you to do that. But can we at the same time admitthat some people get strangely attachedto preachers and messengers?Like go back a generation to the Bill Gawthard people.Look, I used to go to Bill Gawthard conferences all the time. And you know what I saw there? There were people that were very strangely attached to him. They were like the "I follow Apollo's" people.Alright? And there were people that are like that with John Piper. There were people that are like that with Jack Hibbs. That we attach to these people so much so that we saythe gospel isn't the gospel unless you gospel their way.And when we do that,we're just as foolish as the Corinthians. So these men that you're attached to on what basis are you attached?Right? Paul would say,"Was Jack Hibbs crucified for you?"Were you baptized in the name of John Piper? No.Our union is in Jesus and with Jesus. So Nick's the Clicks.Paul shows us fighting is foolish.Fighting is foolish. And finally, number three. Why do I want to fight for unity?Because this unity distracts from the mission. This unity distracts from the mission.Look at verse 14.Paul says,"I thank God that I baptize none of you, except Christmas and Gaius,so that no one may say that you were baptized in my name."I did baptize also the household of Staphanos.Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.Listen, Paul is not diminishing baptism.Paul's not saying baptism isn't important. This is all Paul is saying.Corinthians, if you're going to fight about this stuff,I am so glad I didn't baptize more of you.If you're going to act like childrenbecause of who baptized you,I'll thank you God that I didn't baptize more of you.In verse 17, he says,"For Christ did not send me to baptizeto preach the gospel and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power."Paul is saying, "I was sent to preach to make men one in Christ, not baptize to make teams."When you praise the messenger, you miss the message. When you praise the missionary, you miss the mission. And harvest Satan would want anything, anything to distract us from the mission of making disciples.Nothing's changed.Read the book of Acts.In the book of Acts, the church is born.Satan tried to destroy the church from the outsidethrough Acts chapter 4.From the outside attacks. What happened to the churchwhen Satan tried to attack from the outside? What happened? It got bigger and stronger.Kind of like the Charlie Kirk thing that happened recently. The outside attack resulted in getting bigger and stronger. But do you know Acts chapter 5, Acts chapter 6,Satan changes his strategy.Instead of attacking the church from the outside,he attacks the church from the inside, and he found out to be so much more effectiveto distract the church from the mission. And Satan will do that to us.You see, if Satan can get us dividedand fighting with each other, then we're distracted from doing what we're supposed to be doing. The gospel of Jesus Christhas to be the core of everything that we do here.It has to be the cause of everything that we do here.It has to be the motivation of everything that this church does.A pure focus on a pure gospel. Not with words of eloquent wisdom. In other words, we're not sugarcoating it.We're not dressing it up.We're not making it a performance. The power is in the pure gospel of Jesus Christ. So next the clicks. Why?Because disunity distracts from the mission. Our worship team will make their way forward.I'd like you to just buy your heads for a moment.Excuse me.I'd like you to just buy your heads. As we said at the onset, when there's any kind of disunity, when there's any kind of fighting,it's so easy to blame the other guy.God's Word tells us that we need to look at ourselves first.I just want you to buy your heads.I just want you to do a little self-examination.I want you to consider your role in this church, your interactions with people in this church. And I want you to ask yourself,am I an agent of unity or disunity in this church?Am I trying to bring people together?Or am I dividing people?Oh, another question that goes with that.Ask yourself this.If everyone in the church acted like I do,what kind of church would this be?And then finally ask yourself this.Am I committed to the pure doctrine of the gospeland submission to our Lord and to one another?Or have I really made lesser things my focus?Father in heaven, you have called us to unity.Father, it's real easy for us to sit in this roomand sort of laugh at the foolishnessthat was happening in the Corinthian church, bragging about which preacher is the best.It just seems so silly to us,but Father, we fight about thingsthat are much more silly than that.Father, I just pray for the unity in this church. We believe, Father, that Christ died to make us one.And I pray, Father, that we would do everything we canon our part to strive for unity in the body of Christ.Father, if there's any complaining, negative, divisive attitude within any of us,Father, I pray that you would grant repentanceand bring us to the place that we care moreabout your reputation and the ministryto reach the lost and to build up the saved.I pray that we would be so focusedon what you've called us to,that we're not distracted with personal preferences. So thank you, God.Thank you, God, for what you've clearly laid outfor us in your Word.Have us faithful to do it, Father. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

Discover how farmers and researchers are collaborating to develop seed varieties tailored to farmers' needs with Michael Lordon of the Organic Seed Alliance. Since vegetable and flower varieties are not one-size-fits-all farms, Michael tells us how the OSA is working to breed varieties that will thrive on farms without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Michael highlights ways farmers can participate in developing better varieties, including working with breeders, trialing, on-farm breeding and collaborative variety trials with a new platform called SeedLinked.

We need no other special saint today to lead us to Christ in the manger, although his mother Mary and Joseph, caring for his foster-son, help round out the scene. But if we were to select a patron for today, perhaps it might be appropriate for us to imagine an anonymous shepherd, summoned to the birthplace by a wondrous and even disturbing vision in the night, a summons from an angelic choir, promising peace and goodwill. A shepherd willing to seek out something that might just be too unbelievable to chase after, and yet compelling enough to leave behind the flocks in the field and search for a mystery. On the day of the Lord's birth, let's let an unnamed, “non-celebrity” at the edge of the crowd model for us the way to discover Christ in our own hearts—somewhere between skepticism and wonder, between mystery and faith. And like Mary and the shepherds, let's treasure that discovery in our hearts. Reflection The precise dating in the Scripture readings for today sounds like a textbook on creationism. If we focus on the time frame, however, we miss the point. It lays out the story of a love affair: creation, the deliverance of the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt, the rise of Israel under David. It climaxes with the birth of Jesus. Some scholars insist that from the beginning God intended to enter the world as one of us, the beloved people. Praise God! Enjoy this Christmas meditation!

Starts, "The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty." This is the first of a series of psalms that are called royal psalms as they praise God as King. Psalm 93 is about how Adam was born on Friday and was subsequently caught partyin' - partyin' with Rebecca Black, whose song was fabulously covered 1920s-Big-Band-style by Ali Spagnola and Whitney Avalon. See video below — it's the berries!Psalm 94: A Prayer for Vengeance. Starts, "O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongeth." God turns "Kill them with kindness" into just plain "Kill them" which is pretty immature tbh. Living well is the best revenge, but God would rather see you dance in the blood of your enemies. God is so uncool. Sky Daddy seriously needs to chillax.Psalm 95: A Song of Praise and Worship. Starts, "O come, let us sing unto the LORD." Another David ditty, or so they say... whomever "THEY" are. Randye will be reading and signing her most recent novel, "She's Dead, Who Cares" this Friday, April 14 at the Thomas Moran house in East Hampton at 11am. Find tickets to this event, and many others going on around town this weekend, online at Hamptons Whodunnit.

Series: All!Scripture: Matthew 15:21-39Title: “Are you at the table with Jesus?” (Darien Gabriel)Heavily relied on David Platt, Kenneth Bailey, and Sean O'Donnell. (See below)Bottom line: Jesus' beloved are those who respond to his invitation to feast with him by grace through faith.Just as the Father sent Jesus to save, satisfy and serve, Jesus sends us to do the same. To multiply disciple-makers around the corner and around the world. Jesus invited everyone to his family feast. You get in by faith. You're invited. Are you going? It's not just a one and done decision. It's a daily, count-the-cost decision that leads to walking with (or without) God. That looks like being sent by Jesus to save, satisfy and serve our neighbors.Discussion questions for group and personal study. Reflect and Discuss1. Like this Gentile Canaanite woman, what unlikely converts has God placed around you? 2. How have you doubted God's power and mercy in relation to such people?3. How does Jesus' interaction with this Canaanite woman and His feeding of the Gentile crowd help forecast the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20?Final Questions (optional or in place of above)What is God saying to you right now? What are you going to do about it?Find our sermons, podcasts, discussion questions and notes at https://www.gracetoday.net/podcastQ. What do I want you to know? A. Jesus invites you to come and feast with him and his family by grace through faith. Q. Why? A. To empower us to save, satisfy and serve all peoples of all nations. Q. What do I want you to do? A. Accept his invitation by faith.Q. Why? A. So that you'll be propelled to save, satisfy and serve your neighbors. INTROOur kitchen table is sacred ground in our house to Anita and I. It's where we've shared over 2,100 meals with our family of six plus for over 30 years. Sitting at the head of that table might be my favorite place in the house…maybe in the world. Why? Because from there, when they are all in our house together, along with their growing families, I can see and speak to our closest family members. It is there where for a few seconds before we dive into our latest feast that I can pray another blessing over them and say an encouraging word to them. For a brief moment I have their undivided attention and I can remind them that they are our beloved. Do you feel like Jesus' beloved today? In Rev 3:20, Jesus asks to come in and sit at our table. And while he's there he will remind us that we're his beloved and bless us. Our Lord uses a similar metaphor in an unlikely place here today. He's outside of Israel giving his 12 a peak at the future of his kingdom.Today I want to answer 2 questions:Who's invited to sit at the table of the Lord? How do you get there? The final question I'll have for you is: will you join him at his table today?CONTEXTJesus and his disciples leave Israeli territory and go to Gentile territory. First, they go to Tyre and Sidon (modern day Lebanon). Next, they go to the decapolis (a region east of Judea made up of 10 Gentile cities). This marks the last time Jesus will do ministry in the Galilean region as his remaining ministry will happen in Judea and especially in Jerusalem. It is also the only season he will enter Gentile territory. The religious leaders make a trip to where Jesus and his disciples are ministering to continue to confront him with the hopes of exposing him and condemning him. Notice that this is in the wake of some pretty amazing miracles and teachings. He's fed over 5,000 men plus women and children with a few loaves and fish. He's walked on water across the Sea of Galilee. He continues to heal all who come to him including just by walking by them and they reaching out to touch his cloak. He's gaining immense popularity as a result. He's being seen as a Messiah if not THE Messiah by the populace. Even Canaanite women knows about him and that he's the Messiah. As a result, the religious leaders are getting desperate. A leader like this will disrupt the status quo with Rome. And this means the loss of influence and affluence for the religious leaders of Israel. All of this challenges the Disciples and their prejudices against Gentiles. Jesus takes them to Gentile (unclean) territory (after his lesson on what is unclean comes from your heart not from what you eat) and immediately blesses a Gentile (Canaanite = enemy; woman = less than a man) and her daughter. He then blesses thousands of Gentiles (through his D's) just like he did the Jews earlier. This would help them to see that his vision is for more than Israel—it's for the whole world!2 Themes. 2 Miracles.I. Who's invited to the family feast? Everyone. (21-28)A. Jesus takes them to Gentile territory. Not sure why but he isn't getting away from being known and sought after.B. Canaanite woman.Strike 1–Canaanite. Ancient enemy of Israel. Strike 2–Woman. Less than a man in the eyes of men in that day.Strike 3–Gentile. A dog. C. Model of faith.Desperate. “Crying out” Her daughter “is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.” I can't imagine being demon possessed. But she makes it sound like this is worse than normal possessions. Humble, respectful. Even if just being respectful, called him Lord. Messiah. She uses the title for Messiah, “Son of David.”D. Jesus' & Disciples' reactionsJesus is silent. Disciples are not interested in helping. (Everyone is exhausted and hungry) 3 Days.Jesus replies with a discouraging word. But truth. She doesn't disagree. In fact, she kneels and prays profoundly, “Lord, help me!”Jesus again appears to discourage her. (More likely testing) Explains it's not right to take what is for God's people and give to those who are his enemies. Calls her a dog. A “little dog” like a pet, not a rabid dog. But still a dog. She doesn't flinch but does disagree. Points out that it's appropriate for people to get this crumbs. She may not be the kids at the table but there's room for the pet dog to get some. She understands and therefore knows what's available for her. Great faith! What a contrast to the faith (or lack) of the religious leaders (none) and the 12 (little). Why did Jesus ignore, refuse, rebuke and then bless her? 2 possibilities:To test herShe approached Jesus as a Jew (Son of David). Later she calls him Lord which is more universal. She doesn't have to become a Jew first. (Wiersbe)Jesus applauds her amazing faith. Only 2 people get this accolade in Matthew (Centurion is the other).Jesus answers her prayer without going anywhere. II. How do you get in? Faith. (29-39)A. Feels like a repeat of feeding of the 5,000. Lots of things are this same.Thousands of men + women and children. Bread and fish.Gave, gave, gave.Through his 12.Lots of leftovers.B. Differences…a few.Biggest is likely that this was for Gentiles, not Jews. This is why I think the 12 did not suggest he feed them like he just fed the others. I don't think it was a lack of faith but compassion. My take. One in spring and one in summer. One in Jewish territory and one in Gentile territory.Crowd with him one day vs 3 days.7 instead of 12. 12 tribes of Israel7 number of perfection & completeness = rest of the world; this is a huge takeaway Jesus would emphasize in the Great Commission.C. Bottom line: How do you get healed and fed? Faith in Jesus Christ, the source of abundant life and life itself.CONCLUSIONHave you been invited to the family feast to end all feasts? Yes.Have you accepted it? How? By believing that there is an amazing feast that we do not deserve and that when we trust and follow Jesus Christ, he shows us the way there. Will you trust and follow Jesus to the feast today? What is God saying to you? What are you going to do about it?PrayNOTES2 miraclesCanaanite Woman (21-28)Least, last, lostCanaanite/Gentile/ancient enemy of IsraelWomanUnclean—outside of Disciple's comfort zone“Crying out”Desperate for her daughter—demon-possessed and suffering“Have mercy on me!” - desperate for herself tooHuman—she's just like them just not a JewDisciples reaction is to see her great need vs their great lack of resources; but maybe even more they don't want to help her because of their prejudiceSend her away—she's not one of usShe's crazy desperate and Jesus seems to not want to help her (his silence) so they try to get rid of her for JesusJesus comes out with his mission—to the lost sheep of IsraelShe is persistent, desperate and believes in Jesus' character and competencies“Lord”On her knees humilityWise words and perspectiveJesus recognizes great faith and gives her her requestHealing for daughterHealing for herselfWitness to the DecapolisWho is Jesus and what will he do?Who is Jesus? What will he do?Chief missionary, Disciple-maker/trainer, sent-oneMultiplying disciple-makers on his way to the ultimate example (cross, rez)Lord/Son of David/ King/Messiah/MasterExercising ultimate authority over all things including disease, demons, disciple-makingMerciful judge “Have mercy on me” as if she doesn't deserve itExercising ultimate authority over all things including disease, demons, disciple-makingDeliverer/Savior/HealerSave/Deliver; Exalt Gentile woman; Applauds her faith & persistence; save all people; not just IsraelGlobal KingHere for all nationsSuffering servantServe all people/nationsProvider; GroomFeast together; satisfy/bless all nationsJesus came to save, satisfy and serve all people. -PlattOUTLINE BIBLESECTION OUTLINE FOURTEEN (MATTHEW 15)Jesus confronts the Pharisees, teaches the crowds, and explains his teachings to Peter and the other disciples. Her response (15:27-28)(1) The reasoning (15:27): She agrees but asks for some of the crumbs that might fall from Israel's spiritual table.(2) The reward (15:28): Jesus immediately grants her request.B. Feeding the 4,000 (15:29-39): Jesus ministers to this group of 4,000 men as he did previously for the 5,000.1. Meeting the needs of the hurting (15:29-31): Jesus heals the lame, blind, crippled, and the mute.2. Meeting the needs of the hungry (15:32-39)a. The amount of food (15:32-34): He has only seven loaves of bread and a few small fishes.b. The abundance of food (15:35-39): Seven full baskets remain after all have eaten their fill!Nicky Gumbel, Bible in one year, day, 14 Matthew 11:16-30Accept the invitation to walk with JesusThe teaching of Jesus is fascinating. In the first section of today's passage he seems to be saying, ‘You can't win.' On the one hand, John the Baptist was an ascetic and was accused of being demon-possessed. On the other hand, Jesus went to parties with all kinds of people and made friends with those who were regarded as unsavoury characters. He was accused of being ‘a glutton and a drunkard' and ‘a friend of tax collectors and sinners' (v.18).Whatever you do may be misinterpreted. Yet Jesus adds, ‘But wisdom is proved right by her actions' (v.19). I take this to mean that all we can do is the right thing and not worry about what anybody else thinks. ‘Opinion polls don't count for much, do they? The proof of the pudding is in the eating' (v.19, MSG).Jesus then denounces the cities that he has visited and performed miracles in, where people have neither repented nor believed. He suggests that their sin is worse than the sin of Sodom (v.24). The sin of unbelief is perhaps the most serious of all.Jesus goes on to teach in such a way that it is clear that he believed in both predestination (that God has already determined everything that will happen) and free will. He teaches both alongside one another. It is a paradox. The two seemingly contradictory things are both true at the same time.It is not 50% ‘predestination' and 50% ‘free will'. Jesus says we are 100% predestined and we have 100% free will. This may seem impossible, but God is able to transcend and yet not distort human freedom. We ultimately see this in the incarnation: Jesus is 100% God and 100% human; he is fully God and fully human.Predestination‘All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him' (v.27).Why God chooses to reveal himself to some and not to others is a mystery. It is certainly not based on wisdom and learning. Sometimes the great intellectuals simply cannot see it: ‘you have hidden these things from the wise and learned' (v.25). And yet sometimes people of little or no education, or those who are very young (‘little children', v.25), seem to have a very profound understanding of Jesus. ‘You've concealed your way from sophisticates and know-it-alls, but spelled them out clearly to ordinary people' (v.25, MSG).Free willJesus says, ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest' (v.28). The invitation to come to Jesus is for everyone. No one is excluded. We are all invited. We all have a choice whether to accept the invitation of Jesus or to refuse it.I find it difficult to get my mind around this paradox. However, I have found the following illustration helpful. Imagine a room with an arched doorway. The outside of the arch is inscribed with the words, ‘Come to me, all you…' (v.28). Everyone is invited into the room. When you get into the room, on the inside of the same arch is written, ‘No one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him' (v.27b).In other words, free will is a doctrine for everyone. No one can say, ‘I am not going to become a Christian because I have not been chosen.' The invitation is to all. On the other hand, predestination is a doctrine of assurance for those who areChristians. Once you have accepted the invitation and entered, you can know that God has chosen you and therefore he will not let you go.I love the fact that in a stressful world, where so many are ‘weary and burdened', Jesus promises you rest. He offers to take your burdens and replace them with his own.The yoke (something that Jesus would have made in the carpenter's shop) was a wooden frame joining two animals (usually oxen) at the neck, enabling them to pull a plough or wagon together. The function of the yoke is to make burdens easier to carry. I love this image of walking in step with Jesus, sharing our burdens, making the trials to be endured and the battles to be faced ‘easy' and ‘light' by comparison.Jesus is not a slave driver. When you pursue his agenda for your life you carry a burden but it is ‘not harsh, hard, sharp, or pressing, but comfortable, gracious, and pleasant' (v.30, AMP). When you do what Jesus asks you to do, he gives you the strength and wisdom to do it and you carry his burden with him. There will, of course, be many challenges and difficulties, but there will also be a lightness and ease.Jesus says to you: ‘Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me – watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly' (vv.28–29, MSG). Just relax and let God be God.References/Bibliography:“Preaching the Word” Commentary, Douglas Sean O'Donnell, Edited by Kent Hughes“Matthew” by RC Sproul“CSB Christ Chronological,” Holman“The Bible Knowledge Commentary” by Walvoord, Zuck (BKC)“The Bible Exposition Commentary” by Warren Wiersbe (BEC)“Exalting Jesus in Matthew” by David Platt (CCE)Outline Bible, D WillmingtonNIV Study Bible (NIVSB)ESV Study Bible“Jesus Through Middle Eastern Eyes” by Kenneth E. Full Text of ReadingsThe Nativity of the Lord (Christmas) Lectionary: 13, 14, 15, 16The Saint of the day is Nativity of the LordThe Story of the Nativity of the Lord On this day, the Church focuses especially on the newborn Child, God become human, who embodies for us all the hope and peace we seek. Praise God! Click here for a Christmas prayer! On this episode of Acid Horizon we are joined by Jason Read, a professor of philosophy at the University of Southern Maine, to discuss one of his essays on Spinoza and Marx. The title is 'The Order and Connection of Ideology Is the Same as the Order and Connection of Exploitation', and will appear in his forthcoming book Double Shift. In it, Read assesses two contemporary French theorists, Frédéric Lordon and Yves Citton, who in their own writings explore the ways in which Spinoza can enrich our understanding of Capitalism. Along the way, we discuss the history of French Spinozism, COVID and the Great Resignation, capitalist myth-building, desire and ideology, and the legacy of Louis Althusser. The Politics of Transindividuality by Jason Read: https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/1027-the-politics-of-transindividualitySubscribe to Acid Horizon on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acidhorizonpodcastMerch: http://www.crit-drip.comSubscribe to us on Apple Podcasts: https://tinyurl.com/169wvvhi Zer0 Books YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/Zer0BooksHappy Hour at Hippel's (Adam's blog): https://happyhourathippels.wordpress.comDestratified (Matt's Blog): https://destratified.com/Revolting Bodies (Will's Blog): https://revoltingbodies.comSplit Infinities (Craig's Substack): https://splitinfinities.substack.com/Music: https://sereptie.bandcamp.com/Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/acidhorizonpodcast)

I play several clips of my conversation with Dr. Ryan Mullins and respond with some brief commentary. In particular, I aim to clarify some of the disagreements and distinctions related to: Whether Classical Theists can or should talk about 'Cambridge properties' or 'extrinsic changes' A quote from Aquinas on how we should speak of God as "Lord" On how to understand the claim that all of God's actions are identical to his one divine act with Nemes' causal/effectual distinction How we might affirm a mysterian Trinitarian simplicity The Classical Theism Podcast aims to defend Catholic Christian ideas in conversation. With the help of various guests, I defend three pillars of the Catholic Christian worldview: (1) the God of classical theism exists, (2) Jesus is our Messiah and Lord, and (3) He founded the Catholic Church. We place a strong emphasis on the first pillar, defending classical theism, drawing upon the work of Thomistic philosopher Dr. Edward Feser and many others. The Inner Room- Emotions in the Bible

AM 9:11-15 - restoration is possible Psalm 85 - peace starts with becoming "un-offendable" MT 9:14-17 - new wine in new skins Here are the readings: AM 9:11-15 Thus says the LORD: On that day I will raise up the fallen hut of David; I will wall up its breaches, raise up its ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old, That they may conquer what is left of Edom and all the nations that shall bear my name, say I, the LORD, who will do this. Yes, days are coming, says the LORD, When the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the vintager, him who sows the seed; The juice of grapes shall drip down the mountains, and all the hills shall run with it. I will bring about the restoration of my people Israel; they shall rebuild and inhabit their ruined cities, Plant vineyards and drink the wine, set out gardens and eat the fruits. I will plant them upon their own ground; never again shall they be plucked From the land I have given them, say I, the LORD, your God. Psalm85:9AB AND 10, 11-12, 13-14 R. (9) The Lord speaks of peace to his people. I will hear what God proclaims; the LORD–for he proclaims peace to his people. Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him, glory dwelling in our land. Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss. Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven. The LORD himself will give his benefits; our land shall yield its increase. Justice shall walk before him, and salvation, along the way of his steps. MT 9:14-17 The disciples of John approached Jesus and said, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast much, but your disciples do not fast?” Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. No one patches an old cloak with a piece of unshrunken cloth, for its fullness pulls away from the cloak and the tear gets worse. People do not put new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined. Rather, they pour new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sofia-fonseca7/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sofia-fonseca7/support

As Divinepreneurs, how we show up in the marketplace is so crucial because it is an opportunity to be a witness to Christ and a testimony for his grace, love, and overall sovereignty.  In business, we are constantly bombarded with different types of pressures and demands.  The enemy knows exactly how to hit us and try to derail our efforts in serving our team members, and customers.  One of the central areas where the enemy can attack is our finances. Our financial health is an integral part of so much of what we do both personally and in business. Personally, if we don't have our own financial house in order, it is likely to bleed over to our business (or our attempt to launch a business).  To realign our personal finance, we should audit our own views about money.  Do we submit our finances to God or do we still play Lord? On a practical level, we should rid all unsecured debt, i.e., credit cards, car payments, student loans, so that we have the margin (as opposed to paying everyone else) in our lives. Debt is not a sin; however, debt is unwise as Proverbs teaches us.  Imagine if you had no car payment, or a Visa payment.  The money you would have could be better used and stewarded.  After all, we are all stewards of God's money and resources.   And when we are financially responsible personally we will be better equipped to launch our business.  You will be able to save more cash with no debt in order to bootstrap your business. Remember, if you can't service that small business loan we can act in desperate ways in our business just to meet those financial obligations but which are unsound for our business. In both personal and business finance, it is crucial to do a budget.  I, personally, do one every 2 weeks.  I know where everything is going and what is coming in.  When we take control of the income that God has blessed us with he will bless us (not necessarily financially but in all aspects of life).  Take control, and set yourself free with God's principles in your finances so that you can do the redemptive work that you are called to do!  Blessings,  #shiuyaright

I have worked for major Interior firms such as Studio Sofield, Andre Balazs (the hotelier but worked on designing hotels for him in their design dept) Roman and Williams and GACHOT.  When my ex husband left the country and my kids both emotionally and financially I was left to take care of my children and myself. I was having to travel so much for work, my kids were really struggling with their fathers abandonment, and financially it wasn't adding up with all the child care expenses.  I knew I had to make a change in my career for my family. So much had happened that I figured "how could possibly one more thing go wrong" this had to work and I had to make this work somehow. So I left my job and started Jennifer Lordon Interiors. It will be 2 years in the spring since I opened the firm.  I have been blessed that business has been great! However, it is a struggle juggling my business, my three children and their busy school and social lives. I am so fortunate to have my mom close by (lives in New Jersey) who helps with the kids (she takes them for the summer so i can focus solely on work) and I run back and forth to NJ and NYC during the summer months.  I also have an amazing amazing group of friends and a (fabulous boyfriend) who help me whenever Im stuck in a bind and need that extra care for them." - Jennifer Lordon   Listen to hear more about Jennifer's story:  1:00 | Jennifer's family & motherhood journey. 6:20 | Getting you and your kids through difficult times and finding support in friends and family. 8:10 | Putting on the “Game Face” while also trying to heal inside. 10:05 | The transition from daily work to opening your own business. 12:50 | What sets Jennifer apart from other interior designers. 17:15 | Must have for a home and family safe designs. 19:10 | Jennifer's family of three little ones. 22:10 | The struggles of single motherhood. 27:22 | Things that keep you grounded. 31:15 | Juggling the household chores & errands. 35:30 | Lightening Round! 39:30 | The ideal maternity policy. 41:45 | What's next for Jennifer.   Links mentioned:  IG | @jennifer_lordon_interiors  @habiterranyc Follow this podcast: Instagram: @themomenterprise Website: www.themomenterprise.com   Contact Us: themomenterprise@gmail.com Music: www.bensound.com Producer: Kendra Martinez Co-Producer/Editor: Lexi Burrows

HYMN Mary occupies a place in the Church which is highest after Christand yet very close to us,for you chose her to give the worldthat very Life which renews all things,Jesus Christ your Son and our Lord. And so we praise you, Mary, virgin and mother. After the Savior himself, you alone are all holy, free from the stain of sin, gifted by God from the first instant of your conceptionwith a unique holiness. Mary, free from all sin and led by the Holy Spirit, you embraced God's saving will with a full heart, and devoted yourself totally as a handmaid of the Lordto the fulfillment of His will in your life, and to the mystery of our redemption. Mary, your privileged and grace-filled originis the Father's final step in preparing humanityto receive its Redeemer in human form.Your fullness of grace is the Father's sign of His favor to the Churchand also His promise to the Churchof its perfection as the Bride of Christ, radiant in beauty.Your holiness in the beginning of your lifeis the foreshadowing of that all-embracing holinesswith which the Father will surround his peoplewhen his Son comes at the end of time to greet us. Book of Mary, NCCB     Or: Mary, we turn with confidence to youwho are always ready to listen with a mother's affectionand powerful assistance.Consoler of the afflicted,Health of the sick,Refuge of sinners, grant us comfort in tribulation, relief in sickness, and liberating strength in our weakness. You who are free from sin, lead us to combat sin.Obtain for us the victory of hope over anguish,of joy and beauty over boredom and disgust,of eternal visions over temporal ones,of life over death.Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you. Book of Mary, NCCB   PSALMODYAnt 1: The angel of the Lord brought tidings to Mary, and she conceived by the Holy Spirit. Or: Blessed are you, O Mary, for the world's salvation came forth through you. Now in glory, you rejoice forever with the Lord. Psalm 137:1-6By the rivers of BabylonThe Babylonian captivity is a type of our spiritual captivity (Saint Hilary). By the rivers of Babylonthere we sat and wept, remembering Zion;on the poplars that grew therewe hung up our harps. For it was there that they asked us,our captors, for songs, our oppressors, for joy.Sing to us, they said, one of Zion's songs. O how could we singthe song of the Lordon alien soil?If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand wither! O let my tonguecleave to my mouthif I remember you not,if I prize not Jerusalemabove all my joys! Ant. 2 Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son, and he will be called the Son of the Most High. Or: The Lord has chosen her, his loved one from the beginning. He has taken her to live with him. Psalm 138ThanksgivingThe kings of the earth will bring his glory and honor into the holy city. (see Revelation 21:24). Happy the man who fears the Lord, who take delight in all his commands. His sons shall be powerful on earth;the children of the upright are blessed. Riches and wealth are in his house;his justice stands firm for ever.He is a light in the darkness for the upright:he is generous, merciful and just. The good man takes pity and lends,he conducts his affairs with honor. The just man will never waver:he will be remembered for ever. He has no fear of evil news;with a firm heart he trusts in the Lord. With a steadfast heart he will not fear;he will see the downfall of his foes. Open-handed, he gives to the poor;his justice stands firm for ever. His head will be raised in glory. The wicked man sees and is angry, grinds his teeth and fades away;the desire of the wicked leads to doom. Ant 3: Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word. Or: The Lord made you so glorious that your praise will never cease to resound among men. Canticle                                                      Revelation 4:11; 5:9, 10, 12Redemption hymn O Lord our God, you are worthyto receive glory and honor and power, for you have created all things;by your will they came to be and were made. Worthy are you, O Lordto receive the scroll and break open its seals. For you were slain;with your blood you purchased for Godthose from every tribe and tongue,of every people and nation. You made them a kingdom, and priests to serve our God,and they shall reign on earth." Worthy is the Lamb that was slainto receive power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory and praise. FIRST READING                                                       1 John 1:1-2 What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we looked uponand touched with our handsconcerns the Word of life--for the life was made visible;we have seen it and testify to itand proclaim to you the eternal lifethat was with the Father and was made visible to us. OR                                                      Ephesians 2:12-22 You were strangers to the covenants of promise, without hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have become near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, he who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity, through his flesh, abolishing the law with its commandments and legal claims, that he might create in himself one new person in place of the two, thus establishing peace, and might reconcile both with God, in one body, through the cross, putting that enmity to death by it. He came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near, for through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone. Through him the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord; in him you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. SECOND READING From a sermon by Saint Augustine, bishop(Sermo 25, 7-8: PL 46, 937-938)) She who believed by faith conceived by faith   Stretching out his hand over his disciples, the Lord Christ declared: "Here are my mother and my brothers; anyone who does the will of my Father who sent me is my brother and sister and my mother." I would urge you to ponder these words. Did the Virgin Mary, who believed by faith and conceived by faith, who was the chosen one from whom our Savior was born among men, who was created by Christ before Christ was created in her – did she not do the will of the Father?Indeed the blessed Mary certainly did the Father's will, and so it was for her a greater thing to have been Christ's disciple than to have been his mother, and she was more blessed in her discipleship than in her motherhood. Hers was the happiness of first bearing in her womb him whom she would obey as her master. RESPONSORYThe Word was made flesh and lived among us. - The Word was made flesh and lived among us.He was in the beginning with God. - and lived among us.Glory to the Father... - The Word was made flesh and lived among us. Or: The Lord has chosen her,his loved one from the beginning. - The Lord has chosen her,his loved one from the beginning. He has taken her to live with him, - his loved one from the beginning.Glory to the Father... - The Lord has chosen her,his loved one from the beginning. CANTICLE OF MARY                                                      Luke 1:46-55Ant: The angel Gabriel said to Mary in greeting: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women. My soul rejoices in the Lord.   My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed:the Almighty has done great things for me,and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear himin every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm,he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel, for he has remembered his promise of mercy,The promise he made to our fathers,to Abraham and his children for ever. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. INTERCESSIONS On this day the eternal Father sent his angel to bring Mary the good news of our salvation. Let us turn to God and pray with confidence: Lord, fill our hearts with your love.   You chose the Virgin Mary as the mother of your Son,- have mercy on all who look for your gift of salvation. You sent Gabriel to give Mary your message of peace and joy,- give to the whole world the joy of salvation and your gift of true peace. Mary gave her consent, the Holy Spirit overshadowed her, and your Word came to dwell among us,- touch our hearts that we may welcome Christ as Mary did. You look with love on the humble, and fill the hungry with your gifts,- raise up the downcast, help all in need, comfort and strengthen the dying. Lord our God, you alone work wonders and with you all things are possible,- give us the fullness of salvation when you raise up the dead on the last day. Our Father… CONCLUDING PRAYER God our Father, your Word became flesh and was born of the Virgin Mary.May we become more like Jesus Christ, whom we acknowledge as our redeemer, God and man.We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,Who live and reigns with you and Holy SpiritOne God, forever and ever, Amen. May the Lord bless us,protect us from eviland bring us to everlasting life. -  Amen.

The NYU Department of Sociology Presents: "Internationalism and Democracy after the Eurozone Crisis" Monday, January 30thSince 2008, Europe has been mired in an institutional and political crisis that shows no signs of abating. If the 2008 financial meltdown shook the Eurozone to its foundations, the combination of austerity and the uneven recovery of member-states in its wake has once again brought questions of sovereignty and democracy to the fore. The consequence has been a series of escalating conflicts over Europe's future, exemplified by the tensions that surrounded the imposition of drastic austerity measures on the populations of Greece, Italy, and Spain, and by last summer's "Brexit" vote in the UK. Meanwhile, in many countries, growing hostility to the EU has fueled the rise of xenophobic and Euroskeptic forces on the far right, as parties like the French National Front have managed to gain traction with nationalist appeals that stress opposition to global financial elites, immigrants, and Islam. In this context, debates over the trajectory of economic and political governance in Europe have taken on a new urgency. This event features of France's leading left-wing social scientists and "public intellectuals" discussing the roots of the present crisis, the response of the social movements, and the implications for democratic politics. Using the experience of post-2008 mobilizations against austerity across Europe - and last spring's Nuit Debout protests in France in particular - they ask what a viable left strategy for dealing with the crisis might look like. To what extent are internationalism and democracy still compatible in the era of European integration? And what does the crisis signify about the future of the national state, at a time when the growing salience of exclusionary nationalism has spurred a steady rise in support for the far right? Speaker Bios: Frédéric Lordon is an economist and philosopher. He is Director of Research at France's National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and a researcher at the Center for European Sociology (CSE). He is the author of several books, including, most recently, Willing Slaves of Capital: Spinoza and Marx on Desire (2014), La Malfaçon: Monnaie Européenne et Souveraineté Démocratique (2014), and Imperium - Structures et Affects des Corps Politique (2015). Last year, Lordon was a prominent figure associated with France's Nuit Debout protest movement. He writes a regular column on European politics and the Eurozone crisis for Le Monde Diplomatique. Cédric Durand is an associate professor of economics at the University of Paris 13, a member of the Center for Economy at Paris-Nord, and a researcher with the Center for the Study of Industrialization (CEMI-EHESS). He is on the editorial board of the journal Revue d'Économie Industrielle and the online magazine ContreTemps. Joshua 1Moses, the servant of the Lord - On the epithet, see the marginal reference “b.”Moses‘ minister - It is impossible altogether to pass by the typical application of this verse. Moses, representing the law, is dead; Joshua, or, as that name is written in Greek, Jesus, is now bidden by God to do what Moses could not - lead the people into the promised land. Joshua was “Moses‘ minister,” just as Christ was “made under the Law;” but it was Joshua, not Moses, who worked out the accomplishment of the blessings which the Law promised. On the name Joshua, see Exodus 17:9 note, and Numbers 13:16.Saying - No doubt directly, by an immediate revelation, but not as God spake to Moses, “mouth to mouth” Numbers 12:8. Though upon Joshua‘s appointment to be Moses‘ successor (Numbers 27:18 ff), it had been directed that “counsel should be asked” for him through the medium of Eleazar “after the judgment of Urim,” yet this was evidently a resource provided to meet cases of doubt and difficulty. Here there was no such case; but the appointed leader, knowing well the purpose of God, needed to be stirred up to instant execution of it; and the people too might require the encouragement of a renewed divine command to set out at once upon the great enterprise before them (compare Joshua 1:13).
