This week we are celebrating the diva that was Elizabeth Taylor! Sakana joins us once again to celebrate the work of this prodigious star - with a close look at two of her most bizarre and off-kilter projects: the Italian psychosexual thriller, Identikit (1974), directed by Giuseppe Patroni Griffi, and Tennessee Williams' Boom! (1968), directed by Joseph Losey. Macrobiotic orgasms, bomb attacks on the streets of Rome, Richard Burton getting attacked by dogs and then sulking about not being fed enough, plus cameo appearances by Andy Warhol and Noël Coward. It's a wild ride, folks. We will be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for both films, so if you haven't seen them before you listen, you can nevertheless avoid spoilers for Identikit by skipping ahead to the 1:25:00 mark, and for Boom! by skipping ahead to 2:08:02. Natural Abundance, Gratitude and Healing Maria Kelly, Founder and Executive Director, AMOR Healing Kitchen Making wise food choices influences our health, how we feel and how we care for our planet. With gratitude we acknowledge that the simplest of foods require few resources to produce, and they are considered among the healthiest and most abundant - fruits, vegetables, whole-grains and plant-based proteins. Macrobiotic cooking is about drawing inspiration for food preparation from our natural environment, using seasonally-fresh, locally-grown, plant-based whole foods. When we add herbs, spices and a lot of love, we can create meals with complex levels of mouth watering flavor and effective healing power. Imagine, food as medicine! This episode features AMOR Healing Kitchen, a small non-profit that provides nutritious, plant-based meals, made with love, by teen volunteers, for people facing health challenges - cancer, heart problems, diabetes, autoimmune diseases or neurological conditions. The kitchen sources in-season ingredients from local farms in the Charleston, SC, area, using organic ingredients as much as possible. Every week Teen Chefs and Kitchen Mentors prepare delicious, healthy meals, and each Friday Delivery Angels bring the meals to the kitchen's clients. AMOR Healing Kitchen empowers teens by teaching them the connection between our food and our health, as well as giving them the tools necessary to carry this knowledge into the kitchen to create nourishing meals. Maria Kelly, Founder and Executive Director, AMOR Healing Kitchen planted the seed of her organization after a 14-year career teaching high school in Charleston County, where there is an abundance of local, organic farms. Her love for plant-based food, local farming, working with teenagers and supporting people challenged with serious illness forms the foundation of AMOR. Maria believes getting back to the earth, for real food will cure us of many chronic illnesses. Food, prepared with love, feeds both the body and the soul. MY ROAD TO POWER- Sex, Trauma & Higher Consciousness with Barbara Berger Many readers want to know more about Barbara Berger and her “Road to Power”. How did she do it? What was her pathway? Now, in her captivating and ruthlessly honest autobiography, “MY ROAD TO POWER – Sex, Trauma & Higher Consciousness”, Barbara shares, for the first time, her amazing life story and her own long, challenging road to power. From a childhood in the cultural wasteland of American suburbia to rebellion against the Vietnam War and going underground, fleeing to Europe, Canada and Mexico and then finally to Scandinavia where Barbara and her husband Steve got political asylum and where Barbara became a leading voice in the youth rebellion of the late 60s, this book tells the story of those tumultuous times. From runaway hippie to vanguard author and leader, to new marriage and three children, then head of a thriving Macrobiotic health center in downtown Copenhagen, followed by breakdown, divorce and the struggle to become a free and independent woman. Until today, where Barbara is now the author of 15 successful self-help books, two of which are international bestsellers published in 30 languages. But “MY ROAD TO POWER” is much more than Barbara's own, personal story – it is also a historical journey through the major collective movements and experiments arising since the Second World War – the Beat Generation, the Hippies, mind-altering drugs, travelling to the East (for enlightenment), organic foods, organic living, moving to the country, collective living and more. The saga ends as Barbara's focus changes (because of her own struggles and inner work) to the rising awareness of the power of mind and consciousness in shaping our lives and societies. Discoveries which are of major importance in today's very challenging and troubled world. About Barbara Berger American-born Barbara Berger is the best-selling author of “The Road to Power – Fast Food for the Soul” (published in 30 languages), “Are You Happy Now? 10 Ways to Live a Happy Life” (published in 21 languages), “The Awakening Human Being – A Guide to the Power of Mind”, and “Find and Follow Your Inner Compass”. Barbara's latest books include “Healthy Models for Relationships – the Basic Principles Behind Good Relationships With Your Partner, Family, Parents, Children, Friends, Colleagues and All the Other People in Your Life” and her autobiography entitled “My Road to Power – Sex, Trauma & Higher Consciousness”. Barbara lives in Copenhagen, Denmark and works as coach and therapist, helping people around the globe come into alignment with their own true power. In the episode, "On Location in NYC: Believing in Yourself with Ballet Dancer and Podcaster Michelle Williams (S5, E12)," Michelle and I reconnect to do another podcast on location in NYC. Born and bred in California, Michelle hits the streets of NYC to reclaim her original dream of living as a professional dancer. She shares what kept her believing in herself and how she stayed the course toward manifesting her dream. Michelle and I also share our stories of lived experience with the mental health industry--from being forced on debilitating meds to having our closest friends and family lose faith in our abilities. After suffering from an eating disorder and seeing how the psychiatric institution dismissed her concerns around the psych meds' side effects, she turned to alternative modalities of natural healing in everything from energy medicine to healing through food. Michelle is also the podcast host and creator of "MacroMagic With Michelle," where she helps her listeners achieve greater personal freedom, health, happiness and peace through her MACRObiotic perspective. To listen to our podcast recorded last year titled, "Natural Medicine: Holistic Healer Michelle Williams Shares a Journey of Alternative Healing (S4 E9)," go to: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1462411/11131458Follow Michelle on IG @the_freedom_fairywebsite: https://thefreedomfairy.com/YouTube: @The Freedom FairyDon't forget to subscribe to the Not As Crazy As You Think YouTube channel @SicilianoJenAnd please visit my website at: www.jengaitasiciliano.comConnect: Instagram: @ jengaitaLinkedIn: @ jensicilianoTwitter: @ jsiciliano

While driving his truck, Norio stopped thinking for more than two weeks. Through this experience, Norio realized that the “self” we think we are does not exist. The “self” exists only in our thinking, in our internal dialogue, and is the single source of all human suffering. By recognizing the illusion of the self, Norio awakened to complete peace and unconditional love, a natural state that is humanity's true nature. No matter what illness or discomfort the body experiences there is always a solution. Most lifestyles and diets are appropriate if they bottom line is finding balance and that may look different for each person. Stress leads to disease!Michelle Berzack is a long time holistic chef formerly trained in the Macrobiotic lifestyle brought to America from Japan by Michio Kushi. Along with being a chef Michelle is a biologist and expert vegetable gardener. For over 20 years Michelle has experienced and tried out many ways of healing, landing on the most effective method which is listening to what her body and mind do through conscious practices. Instead of following the guidelines of one method or one practice Michelle takes something from every country, diet, practitioner, and person she has come across. After seeking Tibetan doctors in India, exploring foods of Japan, Thailand and North Africa, living according to strict Macrobiotic guidelines, eating only raw foods, then vegan foods, vegetarianism, Paleo (vegetarian), Ayurvedic, even consulting specialized doctors in America, Michelle has come to the conclusion that working to achieve a state of equilibrium is what leads to healing the body and preventing disease.

Dr. Andrew Newberg and Tessa sit down to discuss the food we consume for our body and brain, stress, as well as how meditation and yoga influence brain health. Dr. Andrew Newberg is a neuroscientist who studies the relationship between brain function and various mental states. He is a pioneer in the neurological study of religious and spiritual experiences, a field known as "neurotheology." He is the author of several books, including Brain Weaver. Optimal brain health is a balance between the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of a person's lifestyle, however, there is no one size fits all. Finding harmony for each person is essential and different; the goal is to specialize it for each person's specific needs. 2. Meditation, even thirty seconds of mindfulness, is refreshing for the brain. Practice and repetition have beneficial results, even in those small doses. 3. Integrated medicine and western medicine have substantial overlap. The goal is to not see them as a “versus” but rather as just medicine. Integrated medicine may look at different aspects of an individual while conventional medicine looks at another, but they are meant to be used together. 4. Everyone can work towards optimal brain health. Paying attention to individuals strengths and weaknesses is going to be the best plan for achieving. Macrobiotics is a diet concept promoted to the world by Japanese George Ohsawa as a way of eating a variety of Whole Foods that are energetically balanced between yin and yang. After esoteric law or Taoism, everything has two poles which are YIN (woman) or YANG (man). The hot weather is considered "yang", and nature offers us "yin" foods such as watermelon to help us freshen up and stay hydrated. The cold weather is considered "yin" and we are offered "yang" root vegetables to help us feel hot and rooted. Yin foods grow upwards and outwards, like green leaves, which grow in an upward direction, and fruits that grow on taller plants like trees. Yin also represents the foods that make us feel elevated, so it also includes cereals. When consumed in balance, you will feel awakened, alert and light in your body. In excess, you'll experience a high followed by a crash.Yang foods grow inward and downward, like root vegetables which grow in the soil and become oriented towards the ends (i.e. Carrots, daikon, etc.). Animal products are yang because they are concentrations of the nutritional intake of the animal. When you eat products with more yang properties, you feel hot and relaxed. In excess, you will easily feel sluggish.By eating a meal with foods that take both yin and yang, we can balance our food with climate, weather, and our own temperament/emotions... What does a typical macro-biotic meal contain? The most important ingredients of macrobiotics are brown rice, miso soup, and seasonal vegetables.Whole grains with the peal. - Brown rice is to Macrobiotic the Holy Grail. Because brown rice is the most energetically balanced food in macrobiotics. And then we add to moderately balanced foods such as leafy greens, round vegetables (like pumpkin, cabbage and onion that are literally round in shape), root vegetables, beans, miso soup, fermented vegetables, … The best way to think of a macrobiotic meal is to think of a Whole Foods Japanese teishoku — the meals consist of a little bit of everything for balance in energetics, flavor, nutrition, season, and appearance. The macrobiotic diet is not necessarily a vegetarian diet, although, most people who practice macrobiotics choose to eat vegetarian style because animal products are considered to be taxing to the digestive system since they take a longer time to digest. The less stress you place on your digestive system, the more your body can restore digestive health.Advocates of macrobiotics who consume animal products tend to stick to fish and seafood in small quantities. At the end of the day, the point is to eat in a way that is energizing and balanced, so consuming “yin” vegetables to balance out the “yang” animal protein is the goal.In addition, we add Tempeh as an alternative to meat/fish. Tempeh is a fermented bean block (like soya bean, Azuki bean, chickpeas) that gives some variety to our meal, it is good for our digestion, because of the probiotics that our bowels need. And we add Natto, specially fermented soybeans that are crucial for healthy bones, cheese-like flavor, and a Umebushi (fermented Japanese plum) for healthy digestion each day. In the episode, "Natural Medicine: Holistic Healer Michelle Williams Shares a Journey of Alternative Healing (S4 E9)," women's holistic healer, Michelle Williams opens up about her personal path towards mental health wellness. After being on psych meds for 10 years, Michelle found an alternative route for her struggles through studying and practicing different food philosophies, including intuitive eating and veganism, and for the past 6 years has promoted the macrobiotic lifestyle. After suffering from an eating disorder and seeing how the psychiatric institution dismissed her concerns around the psych meds' side effects, she felt compelled to research alternative modalities of natural healing in everything from energy medicine to healing through food. Michelle is also the podcast host and creator of "MacroMagic With Michelle," where she helps her listeners achieve greater personal freedom, health, happiness and peace through her MACRObiotic perspective. She teaches cooking classes online and in-person, gives lifestyle consultations and meal plans, provides crystal and palm energy healing in the pursuit of helping sensitive women achieve ultimate health and happiness through the power of nature. The British Gardeners are urged to stop mowing lawns in May so as to “support bees”. Gardeners come in many different "sizes": 1) Precision gardeners. Those that follow the swanky garden magazines and have not a plant nor a blade of grass out of place. Think Versailles and the Famous British gardens like Sissinghurst. When it comes to lawns they are cut to within an inch of their life! There are no weeds, and few "wild Flowers". Most of the borders are sprayed to minimize fungi and bacterial diseases as well as Natural Biodiversity such as insects, spiders, mites, praying mantises and crickets 2) Wannabe-precision gardeners. Those who haven't got the time nor the staff to achieve the number one status. Their gardens really lack detailed attention and as such they're a lot weedier and "all over the place" in the eyes of precision gardeners. They usually do have some structure though... and are pleasant to the eye. 3) Hippies and Macrobiotic adorers of Homeopathy and Herbs. My goodness! That is a mess! Stuff everywhere - no weed control, aphids all over the place, weird flowers popping up everywhere, heaps of blackbirds, lots of worms, swarms of butterflies and armies of moths, native bees, beetles, insectivorous birds and lizards. Ironically, when it comes to creating a garden with the best biodiversity, the third option will win hands-down. Imagine heaps of different species of flowers, weeds, (as well as mosses and lichens) allowing for a huge diversity of wildlife. The nectar and the pollen attached to a variety of flowers is very beneficial for pollinators, such as bees and moths and butterflies, beetles, hover flies, parasitic wasps and predatory critters who all need pollen (protein) for development and nectar (sweet energy). The Brits might have the idea to not mow their lawns in May (getting more flowering weeds in there), but I reckon we can do much better than that: Now is the time to sow wild-flower seeds (mixed series of species) in some vegetable beds that are lying dormant or idle. Some of the resulting plants may even flower in winter and early spring, whereas other species will pop up in mid to late spring, providing our pollinators with extra sustenance (nectar and pollen) and opportunities for survival and reproduction. No, I am not thinking about honey bees so much... We have 28 species of small, native bees and they are brilliant pollinators of our native flowers. These native bee species are often robbed of floral nectar by the commercial and exotic honey bee, so I'd like to give our natives a helping hand. By the way: even “exotic” wildflowers will attract all these critters, so it doesn't always need to be “native plants”… Apart from bees and bumble bees, we also have a lot of other pollinators in our garden: beetles, small parasitic wasps that help with pest control, as well as hover flies and moths and butterflies; All these creatures are part of our ecosystems and complete our Biodiversity in the garden. Birds, too, like the flowers and the subsequent seeds. I have always liked the idea of creating a wildflower "lawn" in the garden and simply mow elegant meandering paths through these wildflower lawns, so you can walk there without getting wet trousers or wet feet after a shower of rain. Start sowing the wildflower mixes in your garden for a totally different and colourful look in spring. Try it...you'll like it!

Join me as I interview Kerry Loeb, the founder of Kerry Loeb Health Trainings (kerryloeb.com). Kerry teaches a 9-session program (no worries, it's virtual) designed to help you release blocked energy and revitalize your body and mind. He does all this by teaching you how to practice the art of self-massage (called Do-In, a form of Japanese energy massage). If your "Qi" (the vital life force) is flowing, everything in your life flows. If energy is not flowing freely in your body, the early symptoms of imbalance (fatigue, general feeling of malaise) start to manifest. If these early signs are ignored, more serious health conditions can develop. Kerry had the good fortune of spending over seven years with his primary teachers, Shizuko Yamamoto and Patrick McCarty, learning all aspects of holistic healing, primarily macrobiotics, self- massage and a form of partner massage - Shiatsu. Shizuko is best known for developing a method of shiatsu called "barefoot shiatsu"; she would literally release energy blockages with her bare feet. Like other committed macrobiotic teachers, she shared her pearls of wisdom with Kerry. In this interview, Kerry responds to the following lessons learned:--Why do people make health their last priority?--How does a strong body and mind make it possible to transform less than optimum circumstances in your life?--How does nature serve as our guide toward healing and wholeness? --Why are solutions to health conditions often simple, but not easy for individuals to implement in their lives?--When we have perfect health, why do you think it becomes natural for us to want to help others?--What do you think about Shizuko Yamamoto's statement, "The essence of shiatsu (substitute any healing modality) is love, which is infinitely available"?--Shizuko Yamamoto refers to "the reverberation of health," meaning when we change ourselves from within, we project more health and positivity into the world and contribute to creating a better world - your thoughts?--Your top-three list for individuals to kickstart their own reverberation of vital energy and optimum health into the world? If you want to kickstart your own precious health, join Kerry in one of his Kerry Loeb Health Trainings (kerryloeb.com). His self-massage course is "A 9-day deep dive into a way to increase your vitality, strengthen your imminity and transform your overall health." A priceless gift, for sure. Join me in this conversation with Macrobiotic Chef Mayumi Nishimura. Formerly Madonna's private chef, Mayumi is the author of over eight cookbooks in English and Japanese including her most well-known cookbook, Mayumi's Kitchen, Macrobiotic Cooking for Body and Soul. Mayumi describes how her teaching has changed during the pandemic. The demand for celebrity dishes and gourmet food had been replaced with a return to basic principles to ensure good health. She often surprises her students by introducing opposing points of view. She encourages students to adopt the principle of non-credo, meaning “question everything.” For Mayumi, an open mind is essential and preferred over a dogmatic or rigid approach. Mayumi describes her approach to life and career as unconventional (she splits her time between Alaska, Massachusetts, and Japan when she is not otherwise teaching internationally). She views both Michio Kushi and Madonna as exemplars of this credo, meaning that in each moment they did what was necessary without much regard for convention. They both followed their innate wisdom. Mayumi has cultivated appreciation though her long-time martial arts practices. Unlike what most people think, marital arts is not so much an opportunity to defeat a foe, but to learn how to care for yourself and your partner. Developing this understanding has been an important lesson for Mayumi. In her culinary classes, Mayumi emphasizes that taking the time to master the simple and minimal can offer infinite possibilities. While a broad repertoire can be enjoyed, it is not essential to make a nourishing, delicious meal. In her book Mayumi's Kitchen, she uses the term “petite macro,” to encourage people to start where they are - meaning it's ok to make one small change per week. By encouraging her students in this way, she puts them on the path. Mayumi believes that macrobiotics offers an opportunity to study yourself. If offers the answers of how to live your life. The pandemic has given her the opportunity to appreciate all the gifts life has offered her and to acknowledge our interconnectedness. Finally, for Mayumi, laughter is the cure and love is the answer – in cooking and life. Join me for a conversation with Fatima Al Mansoori from Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, as she describes her work, first as a yoga therapist and later as the founder of Sustainable Humanitarian Development (SHD). Along with a professional team, SHD is committed to supporting refugees and survivors of natural disasters with mindfulness and holistic health practices. A well-known influencer in her home country of Bahrain, she felt compelled to help others after the death of her mother from cancer. By allowing herself to be of service, to experience and see first-hand the grief and pain of others, she was able to transform her grief into gratitude for all the experiences life had offered her. Fatima's career morphed from graphic design to yoga therapist as a result of her health diagnosis of fibromyalgia, what she has described as “a disease without a cure.” She turned to yoga, Ayurveda and yoga therapy to address her illness. Not satisfied with merely taking courses or turning to online resources for self-healing, she decided to travel to India to immerse herself in these ancient traditions. Already an influencer with a large following in Bahrain, she started to share her own health recovery and immediately received many requests to share her experience and eventually to design programs incorporating what she learned. She later added Macrobiotics to her Ayurvedic toolkit and began incorporating tools from these dual wisdom traditions to promote healing. During the last two years, she has committed her time to a project intended to introduce mindfulness in the schools, collaborating with a team of experts including James White, founder of Mindfulness Schools Ireland, in order to give the project a more global reach. The project was intended to be scientifically-based and measurements were set to occur pertaining to immunity and cognition. The project has been temporarily paused due to the pandemic. Since the pandemic, Fatima has created programs to support front-line healthcare workers in Bahrain which incorporate breathing, concentration, mindfulness, and movement. A Covid bride, Fatima has viewed this time as one to retreat and pause, to integrate the last five years of her life, which she has described as one whirlwind after another. She has resumed her interest in video games and indicates that she does think that games have merit (the right game of course, not of the addictive variety) and that there is a direct correlation between video games and mindfulness practice. She is currently working with the city of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, on developing mindfulness programs for government employees and an App may also enter the mix. This is an interview not to be missed. Thank you, Fatimah!Links:Instagram: @fatima.al.mansooriWebsite: https://www.fatimaalmansoori.com/
Join me for a conversation with Robert (Bob) Mattson as he describes his more than 50-year journey with macrobiotics. Bob describes the year he spent in Oroville, California at the Vega Study Center with teachers Herman and Cornellia Aihara, both health pioneers. While at Vega, he transcribed the "Morning Tea" sessions with Herman and Cornellia, a time when students and teachers engaged in informal Q&A over morning tea. Bob shares the pearls of knowledge so freely offered during these sessions including: "psychological/spiritual healing can occur in an instant while physical healing takes time." Herman: "Once a person changes his or her mind and decides to heal, this is the important 'instant' that is the spark that spurs healing." Herman: "For our spiritual development, we sometimes have to give up things we really cherish ( like smoking or sugar)." Bob quotes from Verse 48 - Tao Te Ching – "In pursuit of knowledge, every day something is added. In the practice of the Tao, every day something is dropped. Less and less do you need to force things, until finally you arrive at non-action. When nothing is done, nothing is left undone. True mastery can be gained by letting things go their own way. It can't be gained by interfering." Bob: "The world is gained by letting go - when we mature, we discover this is a more peaceful way to live and when we let go, we create the space for new ideas to emerge. People who eat poorly - their judgment is impacted and rarely are they prepared to let go of old ways of thinking." Touching upon his current writing project - the vocabulary for a new world constitution - Bob reckons with one planet, one global civilization. He also speaks about a paper he wrote on microbial life - spurred by his conversations with E.O. Wilson, the prominent biologist and writer who he was chauffering at the time. Most of us would be satisfied with Wilson's responses to questions posed; Bob however decided to conduct his own research. He purchased 25 books on microbes from the Harvard Book Store and undertook an extensive research and writing project. He claims it is no coincidence that his most recent and current writing projects on microbes and personal rights are perfectly aligned with what the current state of the world -given the pandemic and the erosion of our most precious rights. I queried as to what he learned in his role as a taxi driver, personal driver and chauffeur to many prominent individuals. Bob: "The rich and famous are actually quite ordinary, but caught some lucky breaks. Many are quite expert in their chosen field, but this brilliance doesn't necessarily permeate to other areas of their lives." He views one of the keys to a long and fulfilling life to always remain a student, something he learned from Herman Aihara. Bob: "By taking up a diet with whole grains and vegetables as primary foods, one stands a chance of undoing the systemic conditioning that we are confronted with early in life and beyond." He truly adheres to the adage which he has created "whole grains whole brains." Thank you Bob for an awesome conversation!
Join me in this conversation with Edward Esko, one of the world's leading teachers and counselors on the macrobiotic way of life as he explores his new book, Strengthening Natural Immunity: A Plant-Based Macrobiotic Approach, written with the Covid-19 pandemic in mind. Ed looks at the pyschology of populations living in pandemic "hotspots"; the correlation between toxic dead zones in the environment and the human body; the timeline in the Great Pyramid which stops in 2038 - meaning a new orientation toward spirituality and consciousness will arise; how our food choices raise our level of consciousness and abundance (and specifically how whole grains with awns channel the energy of the Universe); how eating communal grain offers the opportunity to create cohesive communities. In this talk, Ed offer a new hope for humanity, like the dot within the yin yang symbol which represents transformation to a new and opposite orientation. Ed views the pandemic as an opportunity to usher in a new era of peace and harmony, one where will no longer be alone but "all one." Edward Esko studied with Michio Kushi for many years and has served as Executive Director of the East West Foundation in Boston and Director of Education/Dean of Faculty and Associate Director of the Kushi Institute, formerly located in Western Massachusetts.
