Outdoors meaning robots for backyards, construction sites, farms, and major infrastructure projects most everywhere. In short, it's springtime for robots.In honor of March, we'll review some of these new spring robots for 2023. Renovate Robotics, Swap Robotics, Built Robotics, and GlüxKind.  Then, we're off to Korea as Korea makes its $177 billion move at becoming a robotics kingpin: trying to be the third or fourth-largest producer of robots worldwide, as well as making a strong move on leadership in artificial intelligence. Big things are happening in Korea, and robotics will be a direct beneficiary of Korea's remarkable plan for AI leadership, not only in East Asia and Asia…but the entire globe.  Articles in Asian Robotics Review: Major Growth Spurt Ahead for Korean Robotics 2023-2026 Korea could leapfrog competition through integration of robotics, AI/ML, and ICT Korea's Plan for AI/ML Dominance...Brilliant! Korea looks to ramp up artificial intelligence and converge with recent successes in robotics (6x growth from 2009 to 2016). Can Korea pull it off?Our last two segments for this episode ask the question: What happened? Generative AI: Finally, America Gets a Real Wake-up CallIn 1983, the United States had 50-plus manufacturers of industrial robots. Today there are zero…as in none! Well, excepting for the recent one ABB in 2015 (Swiss/Swedish conglomerate) built in Michigan. Americans are left to "assembling" other peoples' robots. Even though the U.S invented robots.   What if there's a supply-chain fiasco preventing shipments? Or worse, what if embargos from  US alliances make it impossible to import from Germany, Japan, Italy or China.? What has that mean't for manufacturing in the U.S. today? Will America's logistics go the same way as industrial robots.Between 2000 and 2010, the US lost one-third of its manufacturing jobs. The US remains the second-largest manufacturing country in the world, but its global dominance has been well and truly lost.What happened? And is this decline a harbinger of what Generative AI might do in the very near future? Lenny Gray is the CEO of Rove Pest Control and D2D Millionaire. He shares the skills and traits that make a door-to-door salesman successful, and why communication is key.  Lenny started Rove Pest Control in 2003 after working in door-to-door sales for another pest control company and also serving as Vice President of training for door-to-door sales for Orkin.  Busting Door-to-Door Sales Myths Lenny is straightforward when he says that door-to-door sales is not for everybody. Most people will find out within two weeks of trying it out if it is the right role for them. For him, it was about a month into his first door-to-door sales job that he realized he could be successful.  He had just finished selling in Homewood, AL, a blue-collar neighborhood. He decided he would go to Mountainbrook, a well-off neighborhood nearby, although most of his fellow salesmen said it was too hard to sell there.  On his first knock in Mountainbrook, he was able to sell to a doctor and his wife. In that moment, he says he realized he could sell anything to anyone, anywhere.  He shares that he learned everything about selling by doing, as his company had a very short training manual. It wasn't until after he wrote his own sales book that he read other books. He felt he had his own selling style that he didn't want confused with other styles.  The Most Important Skill a Salesman Needs to Master Make each door think you've sold to everyone else in the neighborhood.  “In our company, we call it mental toughness. But at the end of the day, it's being able to go to one door and have that person at that one door be incredibly rude, condescending, you know, they call your mom a name. I don't care, whatever it is, and then you bounce back to that very next door and you act like that never happened. You can just erase it from your memory.” Weathering the Highs and Lows On July 4, 2000, in Jacksonville, FL, Lenny remembers selling 23 accounts. It was his best day ever. Two or three weeks later, he had a day where he didn't sell anything. His advice is to stay balanced during these times of highs and lows. Don't carry your negative momentum with you, only the positive.  He captured these stories of success and failure in his book “Door-to-Door Millionaire” and eventually started his consulting company that goes by the same name. During his time working in pest control and consulting other home services businesses, he has identified the traits that make or break a salesman. Because you're actually kind of at that place where those things are needed, so it's pretty easy.” Lenny highlights that he has even seen his plan work for a no credit check finance company. Today I talked to Matthieu Ricard about two books.  The first is A Plea for the Animals: The Moral, Philosophical, and Evolutionary Imperative to Treat All Beings with Compassion (Shambhala, 2016) It is a powerful and wide-ranging indictment of the treatment of animals by humans--and an eloquent plea for animal rights. Every cow just wants to be happy. Every chicken just wants to be free. Every bear, dog, or mouse experiences sorrow and feels pain as intensely as any of us humans do. In a compelling appeal to reason and human kindness, Matthieu Ricard here takes the arguments from his best-sellers Altruism and Happiness to their logical conclusion: that compassion toward all beings, including our fellow animals, is a moral obligation and the direction toward which any enlightened society must aspire. He chronicles the appalling sufferings of the animals we eat, wear, and use for adornment or “entertainment,” and submits every traditional justification for their exploitation to scientific evidence and moral scrutiny. What arises is an unambiguous and powerful ethical imperative for treating all of the animals with whom we share this planet with respect and compassion. The second, co-authored with Jason Gruhl, is Our Animal Neighbors: Compassion for Every Furry, Slimy, Prickly Creature on Earth (Bala Kids, 2020). It offers a story about the fundamental connection between animals and people and how we can treat all of Earth's creatures with compassion and empathy. Furry polar bears, playful sea otters, slow sloths, prickly porcupines, and slimy snakes are just a few of the many animals we share our world with. And even though we might not look the same or have the same needs as our animal neighbors, we have more in common with them than we might think. Our Animal Neighbors introduces children to the importance of treating all animals with the care and compassion they deserve. We all want to experience love, safety, and respect and this book is the first step to instilling those values at an early age. This planet is our home, and we should all be free to live a prosperous life regardless of whether we have hands, hooves, scales, or fur. Matthieu Ricard is a French writer, photographer, translator and Buddhist monk. Ricard received a PhD in molecular genetics from the Pasteur Institute in 1972 before departing his native France to study Buddhism in the Himalayas, eventually becoming a monk of the Shechen Tennyi Dargyeling Monastery in Nepal. Renowned also as a photographer and translator, he is the author of numerous previous books, including Altruism: The Power of Compassion to Change Yourself and Your World, Happiness: A Guide to Developing Life’s Most Important Skill, and, with his father, the late Jean-François Revel, The Monk and the Philosopher: A Father and Son Discuss the Meaning of Life. He dedicates all the income of his work to two hundred humanitarian projects run in the Himalaya by the organization he founded, Karuna-Shechen. I know how distractions work from the inside. For over a decade, I’ve helped tech companies build products to keep you clicking. I wrote Hooked for companies who wanted to help their customers build healthy habits, like going to the gym regularly and eating right. But in the process of researching the book, I found that some products drew some people in too much, including me. I remember sitting with my daughter one afternoon doing activities from a book written to help daddies and daughters bond. One exercise consisted of asking each other the following question: “If you could have any superpower, what would it be?” Between the moment I asked the question and when my daughter could answer, I felt a buzz in my pocket.   For those on the path to financial independence, finance, fitness, and life optimization all intersect. During her career in the banking industry, Shannon McLay found it didn't work for the people she wanted to help. She set out to use her skill set and training to change the coaching industry and founded Financial Gym. Even for those who not physically fit, they know what it looks like and there are many resources available for achieving it. The path the financial independence is similar in that it is a long journey. You have to work up to it, will experience setbacks, and take breaks. Much like diets, budgets don't work long-term. Making lifestyle changes is the key to success. At the Financial Gym, clients hit 90% of the goals set for themselves by examining their money behaviors and constantly working to figure out what's will work for them. The two largest emotions people have regarding money are fear and shame. Once people drop these highly charged emotions and understand the financial numbers don't define them, they can break through and embrace moving forward. After turning 30, Shannon realized she didn't want the life she was leading. Her life's trajectory changed when she came to understand that to have long-term sustainable happiness is to help other people and not expect anything in return. During her work as a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch, she discovered she enjoyed helping out her pro bono clients far more than the wealthy ones. It allowed her to see there was a need for a service where it didn't matter what you looked like financially, you just needed to get financially healthy. Much like going to the gym to get healthy, her concept of a financial gym was a place to meet with financial trainers for a monthly membership fee. Following the model of H&R Block, Shannon believed people wanted to meet with a financial advisor face-to-face. She was advised to prove the model would work before looking to raise money. Experimenting with different plans and prices, she had great success with her first clients increasing their net worth. Clients wanted to keep working with her, but she was running out of money to continue investing in her business. When a former boss invested $100,000 in her concept, she rebranded using the gym concept. The physical environment of the Financial Gym created a community where clients had a shared goal and a safe space to talk about money. Shannon was able to scale her business by developing a training program and teaching compassionate and empathetic people what she knew. Those contemplating becoming an entrepreneur should ask themselves, “Am I a good problem solver?” because running a business is like solving a lot of word problems. No one's financial situation is so bad that it can't be fixed. The trainers at the Financial Gym have seen and fixed it all. On average, clients pay $70-80 a month for membership, but they offer a six-month money-back guarantee which they've never needed to pay out on. The average client increases their net worth by $2,500, increases their credit score by 60 points, and negotiates a $5,000 a year salary increase within the first 3 months of membership. Wayne Baker is a professor at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, and author of All You Have to Do Is Ask, his sixth book. He directs the Center for Positive Organizations and also co-founded Give and Take Inc., an Ann Arbor-based technology firm. Through Wayne’s research, he has discovered that leaders are often happy to help others, but are unwilling to ask for help themselves. How much of a role can asking others for help play in achieving our goals? It turns out, quite a bit. In fact, research shows that we're more likely to achieve success if we make asking for help a part of our strategy. Yet, according to Wayne Baker, author of the book, All You Have to Do Is Ask: How to Master the Most Important Skill for Success, most of us rarely do. There are a number of reasons why. One of the most common is our fear that we'll be seen as incompetent. Another is our assumption that we'll be rejected when we ask. Yet research reveals what tends to happen is the opposite. Wayne explains, "The research shows very clearly that even strangers are very likely to help...so, you start with the assumption that most people will help you if they can, and they want to help you." In this interview, Wayne describes tools we can use to get better at asking for help. He even shares the story of putting one of these tools to work for a very special ask of his own -- his tenth wedding anniversary. In fact, his ask led to him giving his wife a surprise ring on national television. Wayne explains, "I had it in my pocket, and I asked them for permission to give it to her. And they let me do it, on air. It was amazing...It was just this incredible experience." Meet Dr. Wayne Baker Dr. Wayne Baker is the author of All You Have To Do Is Ask: How to Master the Most Important Skill for Success (Jan 14, 2020). He is the Robert P. Thome (“Toe-May”) Professor of Business Administration at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, as well as Faculty Director of the Center for Positive Organizations. Wayne is a co-founder and board member of Give and Take, Inc., which develops technologies based on the principles in his new book. Why is asking for what you need such an important skill for success? We found that people tend to be very generous at work and in their lives and they're very well regarded for that. Most people want to be helpful and will help when they can. But they don't ask for what they need. And because they don't ask, they don't get the inflow of all the resources you need to be successful. It could be knowledge, information, referrals, ideas, contacts, Any kind of resource that you need to be productive and to do well at work. So why is it so difficult for people to ask for what they need? There's a couple of reasons. One is that people are concerned or they're worried that they'll appear to be incompetent, weak that they can't do their jobs. Another very common obstacle is that people figure no one can help. Many, many times I've run different events and activities using the tools in my book, and people will take me aside and say, you know, I'm not going to ask for what I really need, because I know no one could help me. And I always tell them the same thing, which is to never know what people know, or who they know. Until you ask. What can people and teams do to build social capital? The most important thing is to give yourself permission to ask and to realize that asking is an essential part of the equation. So if everyone wanted to be a giver, and everyone wanted to help, nothing would happen. So what we found that in the workplace is that most people are willing to help. In fact, the studies there show up to 90% of the help that is given in the workplace is in response to a request, but most people don't ask, so therefore, nothing really happens.  Can you share with our listeners your most successful or favorite networking experience that you've had? Well, I think the one I would have to relate goes back a number of years. When my wife and I were coming up on our 10th wedding anniversary, I said to her, you know, what would you like to do? She said, I want to be on Emerald Live in New York City to celebrate our anniversary. I was participating in the orientation program for all of our incoming MBA students here at the Ross School of Business. I said, you know, I'm gonna take my own medicine I'm gonna make a big request and I use the "smart criteria." Like five people came forward and said, one person said, you know, I know someone who's dating Emerald's daughter and I can make an introduction for you. We were connected. As you continue to build and grow your network and community can you share how you stay in front of over best nurture these relationships? There's a couple of things that are important to do. One is to stay in contact, but stay in contact in a meaningful way. Look for opportunities to share something of value. It's like a little investment. I just think it's part of the importance of building a network is that you want to be an investor, you want to help other people, you want to be generous.  What advice would you offer the business professional who is looking to grow their network? I would say it would be three parts Join. Give. Ask. So it'd be to join a meaningful group. It could be join a LinkedIn group, or there's so many online communities. Then look for opportunities to give, you know, a few, almost every conversation, you can listen with that intention in mind. And then of course, whenever you need help, to ask for it whenever you need a resource to get your work done, to solve a problem, to ask for what your needs. So it's those three things to Join. Give. Ask. Between digital networking and traditional networking, which one do you find more value in? It's kind of hard to answer because I think they each have their place. Traditional networking occurs in the daily grind of our lives where we interact with and meet people. And in those encounters, we can look for ways to help. And also ask when we have a need or goal we're trying to achieve. And then the digital networking. It's a small world now it really expands our whole universe. I think they both have their place and I I kind of look for more opportunities to use digital technology as a way of investing in your network and then asking when you need something. We've all heard of the six degrees of separation. Now, who would be the one person that you'd love to connect with? And do you think you could do it within the six degree? I've always wanted to meet Bill Gates. And there are two people that I'm connected with on LinkedIn that I know know him. So that I guess would be two degrees of separation.  Can you share with our listeners what book you're reading right now? Or maybe a podcast you're listening to? So one is that I am re-reading, Give and Take by Adam Grant. Adam was one of our PhD students from about 10-12 years ago and he is just an incredible person who has done wonderful things out there in the world. I've learned a lot from him. And then the other side is that if I have a vice it's science fiction. So I'm currently reading The Lost Colony by A.G. Riddle. It's the third in a in a series. Marcel Schwantes welcomes Dr. Wayne Baker to this week’s Love In Action show. Wayne is the co-founder and board member of Give and Take Inc. He also serves as the Faculty Director of the Center for Positive Organizations at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. His work has been published in Harvard Business Review, Chief Executive Magazine, and Sloan Management Review. His teaching and research focus on social capital, social networks, generosity and positive organizations. He chats with Marcel about the art of making strategic asks as detailed in his new book, All You Have To Do Is Ask: How to Master the Most Important Skill for Success. Generalized reciprocity is when one person helps another, and that person is motivated to pay it forward. The cycle of reciprocity eventually comes back around to the person who started it. [7:11] Wayne realized that people had no problem being generous; however, many people struggle with asking for help. This is problematic because it is the request that drives the process of giving and receiving. [7:51] Marcel asks about the barriers that cause us to be reluctant to ask for help. Wayne answers: [8:40] We think we’d look incompetent. Making a thoughtful request however, makes us seem more competent. [9:00] We think no one can help. Wayne counters that you never know what or who people know until you ask. [9:25] We’re too self-reliant. In the real world, work is a team sport. [10:16] We don’t feel psychologically safe. The leader should be the chief help seeker, Wayne says. He or she should model the behavior that makes a psychologically safe workplace. [11:00] Fear is also a barrier. Wayne advocates the behavior first principle: it’s hard to change people’s beliefs and then their behavior; instead, get them to do something different, and they’ll update their beliefs as a result. [12:54] Bureaucracy, in particular organizational silos or excessive rules and regulations, is another reason. Wayne shares how cross collaboration can help break these barriers down. [13:40] Wayne describes his company’s digital platform, Givitas. He says it’s “based on the principle of enabling people to ask for what they need.” [15:40] Marcel asks Wayne to explain why asking for help can mean the difference between success and failure. Wayne replies that when an individual asks for help, he/she is more productive, performs better, has higher job satisfaction and less stress. He also describes the benefits of asking for help on the team and organizational levels. [16:15] A thoughtful request is SMART: Specific Meaningful Action - you should ask for something to be done. Realistic  Time - set a specific deadline. [18:27] You should only think about who you should ask after you know what you want to accomplish and the resources you need, and you’ve formulated a SMART request. [20:08] Marcel asks Wayne to define and describe the Reciprocity Ring. Wayne explains that it came out of a discussion with his wife 21 years ago. He describes how using it leads to positive attitude and behavior change. [28:05] “People are more likely to do what is recognized and rewarded,” Wayne says. As such, he advocates rewarding those who make requests. [32:04] Wayne shares a miracle that happened because someone gave themselves permission to ask. In This Episode: Void and Beej are here with hard earned tips and tricks for working from home.  We’ve done this off and on for years at this point so we wanted to let everyone know some of the things we’ve figured out that a lot of you are dealing with for the first time. Separate Work Space From Home Space If you don’t have enough room for that… then you need a “work mode” and “home mode” for your setup. Void has always had a work desk and a home desk in different areas of the house. His home desk has his gaming PC while the work desk is only set up for a laptop with work stuff on it. Beej does, this, too. He has both a laptop and a desktop and finds that when he needs to really work, he can get on the laptop to be less distracted from stuff than on the gaming pc. The Macbook is set up solely for work, while the gaming PC can be used for both. When You're Done, Be Done No one is watching you as closely as you think they are. Bosses included. You have to work and hit your deadlines, but when your day is supposed to be over, then truly disconnect and let it be over. If you have a Do Not Disturb function (Slack does, for instance), use it. Some jobs might not have this luxury, but if you do, set a time for DND mode and abide by it. Beej, for instance, stops working around 5pm but keeps Slack on DND past 7pm. That way, communication can still happen and handled when necessary, but it's on his terms. After 7pm, it can wait until 8am. Take Breaks From Your Workspace In the office, this happens organically through a lot of interruptions, casual chats, trips to the water cooler, and things like that. It won’t happen as much at home. Things will distract you, yes, but they won't be "breaks" as often. We've found that these are the best ways to disconnect for us. But yours might be different. That's okay. Just make sure you're taking breaks and disconnecting from work at regular intervals. 15-minute walk around the block, house, yard Play a video game for half an hour Take an actual hour break for lunch and make yourself some home-cooked food Beej suggests In The Floor Time with your pets. It really brightens the day. Communication is the Most Important Skill for Remote Work You need to stay in contact with your co-workers and supervisors. But it doesn't have to be constant. If you’re responding to people in an hour or less, you’re typically doing just fine. Emails can even wait longer because most people don't check them constantly. Don't be afraid of phone calls. Casual chats can’t happen so sometimes it’s a lot easier to get on the phone instead of sending 15 emails back and forth. Video chats actually do help, too. One-on-one calls with supervisors or employees with video make you feel much less alone. Talk to Other Humans. Regularly. If you are an educator, school administrator, parent, camp counsellor, or employer, chances are you've had experience with challenging behaviours. So often, we focus on crisis-management and behaviour-modification to attempt to make challenging behaviours "go away," but as we know, sticker charts and reward systems do little to encourage intrinsic motivation and, furthermore, do not address the underlying problems that cause the problematic behaviours.  I sat down with Dr. Ross Greene this summer to discuss his Collaborative and Proactive Solutions model in order to learn how we can solve some of the most challenging school behaviours.  Here are some things we discuss:  The Four Main Philosophies that guide Collaborative Proactive Solutions: Kids do well if they can.  Your explanation guides your intervention. Be responsible to the hand you've been dealt. Challenging behaviours occur when certain demands and expectations exceed a kid's ability to respond adaptively to their environment. It's a method of communication. The Three Main "Umbrella" Lagging Skills Flexibility/ Adaptability Frustration Tolerance Problem Solving Inclusion through the lens of teaching lagging skills and taking an empathic approach to adapting to problems integrating 100% of the time within the classroom for 100% of tasks **The Most Important Skill for an educator to lead with ** **A Step-by-Step Framework to Implement CPS  ** Empathy Step: Information gathering from the student- "What is hard for you about_? How does that make it hard for you to ?" Define Adult Concerns: Explain and articulate adult expectations  Invitation: Collaboration on a solution (having the student come up with some possible solutions to the problem and coming to a realistic, mutually satisfactory solution. "I wonder if there is something we can do about do that you can ? Do you have any ideas?" This was the topic for my latest episode of the FU Project podcast. You can listen here. The key to changing your life is to realize that you can actually change and that there is a huge mind-body connection. This happens when you break the internal victim dialogue of “I am this, because this happened.” Where are you on the Drama Triangle? The Drama Triangle: Victim, Villain, Hero You are in Drama Triangle anytime you criticize yourself or someone else, are stressed out, or have repeating emotions and thoughts. The Drama Triangle model, created by Stephen Karpman in the 1960s, represents three different roles you can play while in drama: Victim - “Poor me, I can't …” Villain - “It's all your fault; if you would do this, then I could ...” Hero - “Let me help you, because you're incapable.” When filling one of these roles on the Drama Triangle, anyone you are interacting with will play one of the other two roles. Most of us are in some version of the Drama Triangle dance all day long, every day, with everybody. “Everything on the Drama Triangle is a flavor of victim. The antidote to victim is empowerment, which is saying, “I am creating my life.'” (EP 17 33:59-34:10) While you can't choose what someone else says or does, you can choose how it affects you. You can choose to be a victim or you can choose to grow and be stronger because of it. Relationships and the Fertility Journey The most frequent relationship question we get from women on the fertility journey is how to get more support from their partner. If you're asking this question, the answer is simple. If you want more of something, start by appreciating what you already have. It's when we start thinking we have a lack that relationships go downhill. “I receive exactly the amount of support that I am capable of receiving. So if I want more support, my job is not to go tell my partner what they're doing wrong. My job is to go inside and expand my own capacity to receive.” (EP17 42:49-43:24) The fertility journey can bring tension and friction into our relationship with our partner. When this happens, awareness is the first step to change. Often the issue at hand isn't the REAL problem. When you give yourself the space to look at the underlying issue, you'll understand yourself and your partner in a new way. It's amazing to see how this intentionality can melt away those issues that have caused one million fights for partners over the years. The Most Important Skill for Women Struggling with Fertility The fertility journey brings up every edge in your psyche that you haven't been willing to address. The most important skill you can learn is to flow with and then let go of those emotions so that you're not carrying around stress, anger, bitterness, and resentment. This fertility stuff is intense. Women who choose to work through these issues have a strong chance of getting what they want because they've allowed themselves to receive the support they need. Give yourself the freedom to dig deep, adjust your mindset, and take one step closer to holding that precious baby in your arms. Danielle and I spent many family holidays together growing up because our mothers have been life-long friends. But, it’s been years since I’ve spoken with Danielle and it was such a joy to hear about the E.P.I.C life she is living. Danielle is the author of three books, most recently Margaret the First, based on the life of Margaret Cavendish, a 17th century Duchess who wrote and published poems, plays and other works during a time when “being a writer” was not an option for most women.  In addition to being an author herself, Danielle also co-founded, with her husband, the independent press called Dorothy, a publishing project. The press came from her own desire to create more space for innovative works by female authors. It is named for her great aunt, a librarian who drove a bookmobile through the backroads of Southern California, delivering books to underserved desert communities.  Born and raised in California, Danielle now lives in Missouri, where she teaches in the writing program at Washington University in St. Louis and enjoys time with her husband and eight year old son, both writers themselves. Danielle and I talked about the small steps she took along the way in her life, from working in a book store in England to taking a writing class and then applying for her MFA on a whim, that brought her to where she is today. She shares with honesty how she has moved through depression and anxiety and how she has become a kinder person since becoming a mother to her son, who she says is hilarious and her favorite person in the world.   We also discuss the importance of a mindful daily practice. How Buddhist meditation has begun to transform the way she thinks about herself, helping her to go down the “right roads” in her thoughts. And she shares how the books she has authored came from both a mindset of patience and a commitment to daily writing. I found Danielle to be totally delightful and was inspired by her honesty, her sincerity and this way in which she comes across at the same time relatable and brilliant.
