In June 1974, seven-year-old Michael “Mickey” David Niles was asleep in his family's Abilene home when an intruder entered. Mickey was stabbed once through the heart. His thirteen-year-old sister, Kelly, was stabbed eight times in the back but survived and managed to call for help. Their six-year-old brother Robbie slept through the attack.Police found no obvious signs of forced entry and no motive. Detectives recovered blood and a latent fingerprint from inside the house, but neither led them to the killer. Kelly provided a description of the man who assaulted her and took the life of her brother, and the Abilene Police pursued leads across Texas and beyond, questioned numerous people, and considered whether Mickey's murder could be connected to other baffling Abilene killings. Nothing produced an arrest, and the case eventually went cold.In 1994, investigators entered the fingerprint into a database, but there was no immediate match. Ten years later, a DWI arrest in San Antonio finally connected the print to a suspect who had been stationed at Dyess Air Force Base at the time of Mickey's murder. DNA testing also linked the man.More than thirty years after Mickey's death, the suspect pleaded guilty and received a forty-year prison sentence.Whether he was responsible for any other Abilene murders remains unknown. Mangione would still likely face a potential life sentence if he were to plead guilty in federal court, but would hope that U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett doles out a lesser sentence. The heir of a wealthy Maryland family led authorities on a dramatic five-day manhunt before local cops in Altoona, Pennsylvania finally nabbed him while he munched on breakfast at a local McDonald's. (Look at raw bodycam footage: Scroll to the :52 mark) Prosecutors say he plotted the shocking killing to make a violent political statement, leaving behind bullet casings at the crime scene with the words “delay” and “deny” etched into them — echoing a phrase insurers allegedly use to describe dodging paying out claims. Christian weatherman's prayers on-air for safety in San Antonio And finally, San Antonio, Texas-based meteorologist Bill Taylor on KENS-5 TV, a media colleague of mine, went viral for praying live on air on July 15th for the people of the Texas Hill Country who were facing an imminent tornado on the ground. During continuous, commercial-free coverage, he said this. TAYLOR: “You look at the time of day and there are just a lot of people that would be traveling in this area, traveling to work — Saint Hedwig, China Grove, right over Highway 87, right at [Loop] 1604. A number of motorists here. “So, Lord, I pray for protection. God, your sovereignty is what we lean into in moments like this, that drivers stay aware, stay alert. That you give them wisdom. Bless these drivers with wisdom. Keep them safe. Put angels around them of protection as they travel. Thank you, Lord. We're just going to get you home safely.” Later, Taylor offered this prayer. TAYLOR: “Praying for these people in the path of this storm that Lord God, your sovereignty would be here. That You, Lord, would protect everyone in the path of this storm. That You would give wisdom and clarity for families to seek shelter. That these plans would enact now. That people would reach out to those people in this affected area to give them the warning they need. In Your holy name, protect us, Lord.” In a follow-up interview on the Christian Broadcasting Network, Bill Taylor explained what was going through his mind at the time. TAYLOR: “This could be a tornado on the ground at any second, and it was impacting a densely populated area. And knowing the sensitivity of the Hill Country flooding that took more than 100 lives a year ago, knowing how destructive a tornado can be, it just truly came out of the Holy Spirit within me to start praying in that moment for protection, for His sovereignty, for people to be clear and wise enough to seek shelter. “When we're in continuous coverage, there's no producer prompting me. There's no script in weather ever, even on a routine day. We're on our own. We're doing a PowerPoint presentation based on our slides that we put together. We're our own producers. The only time that somebody's in my ear is to tell me how much time I have left. “Well, when we have life-threatening weather, we're on till it's over. We stay on — commercial-free — until it's over. And it's on all platforms between broadcast, then our stream channel, Facebook, YouTube. “And when it happened, the Spirit of God came over me and said, ‘Pray!' Praise God that He delivered, as He always does. He's faithful, and we were protected from what could have been a lot worse.” CBN's Tré Phillips asked about what lesson Christian viewers could glean. PHILLIPS: “So, what would you say to those of us who want to be, like you were, more attuned to that still, small prompting of the Holy Spirit?” TAYLOR: “To do it. Take that step and be obedient to it, because it truly is the hands and feet, the body of Christ. You get that prompting, and when that obedience flows, this is God in action. “'Wherever two or more gather in My name, I shall be there.' Christian weatherman's prayers on-air for safety in San Antonio; India's March for Life draws 5,000; Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is Democratic presidential frontrunner

A new UT Health San Antonio study finds that any amount of physical activity can slow cognitive decline in older adults, with Mexican Americans showing the greatest benefit. Researchers say the findings highlight a need for community investment in accessible spaces for movement and social connection.

As the sun slowly rose over the Rio Grande on September 15, 1891, Catarino Erasmo Garza stood on the Texas side of the border holding in his hands two objects that would come to define his life: a Winchester rifle and a revolutionary proclamation. For years Garza had fought the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz through his many newspapers and publications. Now he announced that he was laying down the pen and taking up arms. In the opening lines of his manifesto, he declared:"The last of the independent journalists today abandons the pen to seize the sword in defense of the people's rights."His proclamation denounced the destruction of the free press, political murder, fraudulent elections, and the concentration of land and power, while calling for constitutional government, free trade, and land reform in Mexico. Nearly twenty years before Francisco Madero launched the movement that became the Mexican Revolution, Garza had already identified the grievances that would eventually bring down the Díaz regime.Today, Garza remains largely absent from popular memory. His name never appears alongside revolutionary icons like Emiliano Zapata, Pancho Villa, or Francisco Madero, despite the fact that he articulated many of the democratic demands later associated with the Mexican Revolution. This is a shame, because Garza was more than a revolutionary soldier. It's just the two of them this week — Harp's off in San Antonio, so Robert Horry and Rob Jenners are running the show solo, old-school style. No Shoot Around this Friday either, so they're packing everything into one episode.   They start with the good stuff: the NBA dropped a taste of the schedule, and the Christmas Day slate is loaded — Spurs-Knicks, Heat-Celtics, Sixers-Lakers (hello LeBron revenge tour), Thunder-Wolves, and Nuggets-Warriors closing it out. Bob and Rob debate whether Denver deserved the marquee spot over Dallas, and that turns into a bigger conversation about how much longer Jokic and Steph stick around their current teams — and why neither of them should ever, ever run for office.   From there it's opening week previews, a Pistons discussion that gets real about the Jalen Duren contract standoff, and Bob's old war stories about guys faking injuries to force a new deal. Then the Kawhi Leonard stuff. Another secret endorsement deal surfaced this week — this time with Daktronics — and the guys walk through it, plus the resurfaced details from the Lakers' 2019 free agency pitch that the league is now investigating. They get into whether the Clippers star actually suits up this season and what it means if the NBA lets this slide.   Also on deck: Dillon Brooks cashing in with a $73 million extension from the Spurs, Wemby flying the whole Spurs roster to Paris for a mini training camp, and Robert's take on a young guy trying to "lead" without doing anything out of the ordinary.   VJ Edgecombe getting FaceTimed by LeBron leads Bob into one of his own stories from his playing days, and then Scottie Pippen's blunt comments about Zion Williamson's discipline get the full breakdown — including Bob's offer to personally get Zion in shape.   They pay respects to the late, great Don Nelson, run back Adam Vinatieri's surprisingly filthy Hall of Fame speech, and there's a QVC clip that has to be heard to be believed. Why is there such derision cast between religious bodies and their adherents toward others of differing beliefs? The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and its members have been persecuted since the founding of the Church, and its members often called non-Christian. Is this really true? There are many truths about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that invite discussion. There are also many fallacies and misunderstandings regarding the Church that deserve exposure and explanation. Herein is described to the traditional Christian world and all others who will inquire some history as well as doctrines and practices of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, given in an attempt to help bridge a divide that need not exist between disciples of Jesus Christ. “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” About the author I am a “mid-boomer” having been born in 1955, in Provo, Utah. The first few years of my life were spent in Fort Collins, Colorado where my father attended veterinary school, alternating with summers in Provo which was my father's home town. Over a two year period I lived in Bend, Oregon; Salt Lake City, Utah; and then Glendale, California. Grades K – 3 were in Glendale, and then we moved to Huntington Beach, California. While in Huntington Beach I enjoyed bodysurfing and surfing as well as outdoor sports in general including backpacking and skiing. I also played high school football, basketball, and baseball. I attended college at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and graduated with a bachelor's of science degree in Geology. One summer in college I worked on the North Slope of Alaska for a geophysical company. The summer after college graduation I worked in Uranium exploration in northern Idaho and northeastern Washington. I attended medical school for two years at the University of Utah and completed medical school at the University of California, Irvine. My post graduate training was in orthopedic surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. Prior to completing my training in San Antonio I met and married my wife of the last forty years. My wife is also a physician. Fellowship training in lower extremity total joint replacement and sports medicine occurred in San Antonio, Texas and then Sydney, Australia. My first orthopedic practice was in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Then after two years I immigrated to Texas where I practiced for another thirty years in the northern suburbs of Dallas, Texas. I continue to enjoy outdoor sports, fishing, and I am an admirer of Western art of the United States. After two total hip replacements I have abandoned skiing, but I continue to enjoy hiking in the Rocky Mountains of the United States. I have also found that I enjoy writing. Following my retirement I enrolled at the University of Texas at Dallas and began with a creative writing class. Thereafter, the Covid pandemic caused an acute cessation of my post-post-graduate education.
