On December 5, USC hosts the Soak It Up conference, exploring "landscape architecture's leadership role in addressing critical urban flooding and water management." We thought it fitting to revisit our 2024 conversation with alumna Leslie Dinkin, who earned dual degrees in heritage conservation and landscape architecture. Her award-winning master's thesis, Heritage in Practice: A Study of Two Urban Rivers, explores how and why the Los Angeles and San Antonio Rivers took such different courses in the development of their respective cities. In addition to comparing their histories, Leslie walked nearly sixty miles along both rivers. She documented the experience through her written reflections and hundreds of photos by Rio (yes, Rio) Asch Phoenix. In the episode, she shares stories, insights, and part of her conversation with Char Miller, Director of Environmental Analysis and W. M. Keck Professor of Environmental Analysis and History at Pomona College. Connect with us on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn!
Shakira BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Shakira continues to make waves as she powers through the final stretch of her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour. As of today, Wednesday December third, the Colombian superstar is currently performing her South American leg, with shows scheduled in Montevideo at Estadio Centenario tonight and tomorrow night. Following those dates, she'll head to Buenos Aires for multiple performances at Estadio Velez Sarsfield from December eighth through eleventh, then Cordoba on December fourteenth.Looking ahead to the holiday season, Shakira has announced an exciting intimate venue pivot. She's bringing her Up Close and Personal concert series to Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Due to overwhelming demand, a third show has been added to the original two performances scheduled for December twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth, with the additional date set for Monday December twenty-ninth at eight PM.The tour itself has shattered records globally. The twelve sold-out shows in Mexico City earlier this year generated approximately twenty thousand jobs across logistics, security, transportation, and production, according to Billboard. In her native Colombia, Barranquilla's local government estimated her performances generated nearly two hundred and seven billion Colombian pesos in economic impact, equivalent to roughly fifty million US dollars.Shakira's album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran continues its commercial dominance. The record became the most-streamed album of twenty twenty-four in its first twenty-four hours and achieved seven-times Platinum certification. The album itself won a Grammy for Best Latin Album, cementing her status as a force in the industry.Recent business developments show Shakira expanding her influence beyond music. Epson announced a new partnership with the artist as brand ambassador for the META-CWA initiative, focusing on inspiring youth creativity and innovation through accessible technology. On the charitable front, Shakira demonstrated her commitment to community causes by pledging to donate a portion of proceeds from her July fifth San Antonio concert to Hill Country disaster relief following Central Texas floods. With her net worth now estimated at approximately three hundred fifty million dollars, Shakira maintains her position as one of the most commercially successful Latin artists of all time, boasting over ninety-five million records sold worldwide and more than twenty-seven billion YouTube views.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOtaThis content was created in partnership and with the help of Artificial Intelligence AI

On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple-Double") are back in studio recapping USC's 29-10 victory over UCLA, capping a 9-3 season for the Men of Troy and a likely trip to San Antonio for the Alamo Bowl and an opportunity to win 10 games. With star wide receivers Makai Lemon and Ja'Kobi Lane suspended for the first quarter for violating team rules, the offense struggled in the first half and only managed to put one touchdown on the board. Things picked up in the second half for USC, with the offense putting up points and the defense pitching another shutout, dashing UCLA's hopes of an upset bid in the Battle for Los Angeles. The guys breaks down the game, talking about how missing the top-2 receivers set the offense back in the first half and some of the defensive struggles that led to the Bruins taking the lead in a game for the first time in 40 days. After halftime quarterback Jayden Maiava settled in and found his two stars, Lemon for a 32-yard touchdown and Lane on a couple of crucial drive-extending catches. King Miller also ran well, finishing with 124 yards rushing, 42 receiving and two total touchdowns, earning him USC's player of the game. Finishing the regular season 9-3 is better than most expected, but in some ways it still feels like a disappointment with the opportunity to make the College Football Playoffs just a missed field goal at Illinois away. The guys take a look at the season as a whole and discuss why Lincoln Riley said this campaign was an important springboard towards the future success of this Trojan football team. Thank you to everyone who tuned in live for the latest edition of Corporate Knowledge: After Dark, this time after a 125-112 Spurs loss in chilly Minnesota. It was a rough fourth quarter that overshadowed what had been looking like another great road performance, but San Antonio lost steam just as the ‘Wolves were gathering it. Postgame show topics included: Going 2-2 on a trip through Phoenix, Portland, Denver and Minnesota is a damn good outcome, and that victor over the Nuggets was an eye-opener Spurs aren't letting the other shoe drop, they look legit San Antonio played an ultra-aggressive defensive scheme that reminded of the 2024 Mavs during their Finals run, Sean Sweeney's former team It's been fun watching Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell grow into their own with this iteration of the team; Keldon has been on a roll all season, now let's see if Devin can sustain When the opposition's shot starts to fall and they take better care of the ball, the Spurs can't get out and run; and when they couldn't get out and run Sunday, the halfcourt offense could not find any rhythm For those of you who would like to join live in the future and get in on the chat, you can do so by first subscribing to Corporate Knowledge (matthewtynan.substack.com), then downloading the Substack app. You'll get a notification when we hit the air, which will be shortly after as many road games as we can. Welcome to Glenn Robison's Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can't not tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and '30s. Do you know who this fellow is? He’s a young Jimmie Revard, member of the Osage Nation and his is one of five birthdays we’ll be celebrating on this week’s “all-birthday” edition of Rapidly Rotating Records. I’m guess this photograph was taken before Jimmie put together his first western swing band while a student at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. You’ll find out more about Jimmie and hear three of his recordings in the second segment of the show. The other birthday segments this week are for Rosa Henderson, Percy Chandler, Ray Herbeck and George Wilton Ballard. This week on bigcitysmalltown, we examine one of San Antonio's newest and most debated cultural gatherings: the Krampus Parade in King William. Host Bob Rivard is joined by Bob Crittenden, senior Scrum Manager at USAA and founder of San Antonio's Krampus event, which drew approximately 10,000 participants and spectators in its inaugural year.Together, they discuss the origins of Krampus in Central European Alpine traditions, its transformation from private house visits to public festivals, and how Krampus found its place in San Antonio's holiday calendar. The conversation also highlights the unexpectedly large turnout, the local protests that fueled wider interest, and the logistical changes for this year's parade—now expanding its scope and moving to Beethoven Manicore.Topics include:• The roots of Krampus, St. Nicholas, and winter folklore across cultures• The evolution of the Krampus parade in San Antonio—from idea to city-permitted event• The intersection of German immigrant history and contemporary celebrations in King William• Public response, including media coverage, protest, and “Krampus Gate”• What to expect at this year's parade: route changes, street closures, entertainment, and costume contests• How Krampus is being localized—incorporating elements like the “devil in the dance hall” from Mexican American folklore• The growth of Krampus-themed events in San Antonio, from Fiesta medals to afterpartiesFor plugged-in San Antonians, this episode explores how global folklore shapes hyper-local celebrations—and why new traditions can provoke both controversy and community.Find more information on the 2025 Yuletide Parade at https://krampusportal.com/.RECOMMENDED NEXT LISTEN:▶️ #108. After growing up in Austin, TX, Dan found a home at UT San Antonio following encouragement from his parents, who wanted him to experience college life and new opportunities. Still unsure of what direction he wanted to take professionally, he leaned into his naturally outgoing personality, getting involved on campus and discovering a talent for connecting with people. That openness eventually led to an unexpected radio audition that would change the trajectory of his life. With no formal broadcast background, Dan nonetheless made a memorable impression on Bobby Bones, standing out for his raw energy and unfiltered approach. What began as part-time stunt work quickly evolved into a full-time role behind the mic, where he helped shape the show's dynamic as it expanded into a nationally syndicated program.Along the way, Dan has shared his personal milestones—marriage, fatherhood, and the many chaotic, heartfelt, and humorous moments in between—inviting listeners into his world and strengthening the bond fans feel with the show. In this episode, Dan reflects on his journey, from a directionless college kid to a defining voice in modern country radio, and the twists, risks, and lucky breaks that made it possible.Show Notes:UT SAN ANTONIO AlumniFall 2025 Commencement InformationNew Dramatic Arts DegreeThe Bobby Bones ShowThe Sore Losers PodcastUTSA FootballUTSA Baseball 2026 ScheduleUTSA AthleticsUT SAN ANTONIO Alumni Online Store Thanks for tuning in! Watch the Devotion Based on Philippians 1:3-6 Thank You Since this is Thanksgiving weekend, I want to pause and reflect on the past year. The mission of WELS Ministry to the Military is to make Word and sacrament available to our actively serving military members and their families. To carry out this mission, the Wisconsin Synod provides financial support for 25 percent of our operating expenses. The other 75 percent comes from generous gifts from you. This past year WELS Ministry to the Military received $154,000 in gifts. Thank you! Your generosity and the work we do together as a synod reminds me of the apostle Paul's words to the Christians in Philippi: “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:3-6). Because of your generosity this past year, I was able to travel to 10 duty stations (including one aircraft carrier and 3 duty stations overseas), 16 congregations, 3 high schools, and 2 grade schools. This included a trip to Okinawa this past January where we led a retreat for service members who came from Guam, Japan, South Korea, and Okinawa. Because of your generosity, our office mailed 130 Spiritual Deployment Kits to service members around the world, not to mention a number of hymnals, catechisms, and devotion books. Thanks to you, 135 new referrals came in through our website. We were able to train seven Distinctive Religious Group Leaders to lead Bible study and worship in places we can't be. Five more are being trained right now. I want to say thank you to our European chaplain, Rob Weiss, and his wife, Rachel, for their faithful, dedicated service all over Europe: Spain, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Poland. Thank you to the WELS pastors, teachers, and staff ministers who encourage and support our military service members, who show compassion and care to the family members when their service member is away from home. Thank you to all the grade schools, pastors' and teachers' conferences, and churches who adopted our ministry for their mission offering designation. Thank you to the WELS pastors and lay leaders who serve as contacts at numerous duty stations around the country, especially those who take extra time to visit our young people during basic training. I'd like to highlight Hope in Irmo, S.C., for serving Fort Jackson; Immanuel in Waukegan, Ill., for serving Great Lakes; Our Savior in San Antonio, Texas, for serving Lackland Air Force Base; and Risen Savior in Chula Vista, Calif., for serving Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD). At MCRD Pastor Paul Schulz leads the Lutheran service on Sunday mornings. This past year the Holy Spirit blessed Pastor Schulz' efforts with an average Sunday worship attendance of 47 recruits, and he was privileged to baptize 25 Marine Corps recruits. Thank you to the congregations in the Colorado Springs area for adopting Air Force cadets at the Academy and being their home away from home. Thank you to the Lutheran Military Support Group (LMSG) for their partnership. Because of their generosity, we led a Military Contact Pastor workshop near Hill Air Force Base in Layton, Utah, this past May. The LMSG also provided professional Christian counseling for active duty service members, veterans, and their dependents. I am grateful for our working relationship with WELS Campus Ministry. They have been helpful in identifying high school graduates pursuing ROTC or the National Guard and referring them to our ministry. Thank you to Michigan Lutheran Seminary who reached out to us, wanting to partner and provide a stable high school experience for high school-age students of our service members. I am grateful to the members and staff at Reformation Lutheran Church and School here in San Diego, where my wife teaches and we are members. You have been a huge support for our family. I want to say thank to the team that works behind the scenes to publish these devotions, for posting on our social media and website. You are so patient with me! I want to thank my Military Services Committee family: Paul, Joel, Holly, Josh, Dave, Ryan, Rob, Rachel, and Dale. It is a joy working with you. From me personally, I want to thank you for your small tokens of appreciation. The challenge coins, squadron caps and patches, letters, e-mails, and text messages—this is all so humbling and encouraging. And I am grateful for all of you every day for this partnership in the gospel. I ask that you continue to keep WELS Ministry to the Military in your prayers so that together we might reach more of our nation's service members with Word and sacrament. Have a happy Thanksgiving. In “Texas Pecans, A Thirsty Nut to Crack,” Gravy producer Avery Thompson explores how a changing climate is impacting pecans in Texas, and introduces listeners to the innovative Texans using both age-old techniques and twenty-first-century adaptations to ensure Texas pecans make it to the grocery shelves—and into a Thanksgiving pie near you. For about as long as there have been humans in what we now know as Texas, they have likely found sustenance in the land's native pecans. For many years, Texas supplied the world with the bulk of its pecans—but in recent years, the state has seen unprecedented heat waves and droughts, which have stressed not only its residents, but one of its most vital and revered crops. Exacerbating the climate problem is an explosion in population across the state, particularly in central Texas, where urban sprawl from the growing cities of Austin and San Antonio not only puts pressure on the water table, but also offers a tempting cash-out for struggling pecan farmers. Between drought-affected trees and the sale of farms, Texas is seeing a statewide decline in annual pecan yields. And climate scientists predict that these rough recent years are likely not an exception, but a new normal. Still, Texans are finding creative ways to adapt and preserve their trees and a way of life. For this episode, Thompson talks to pecan growers, including Troy Swift of Swift River Pecans, who has turned to regenerative agriculture and biodiversity. She also speaks to Mark Walls of 38 Pecans, who has invented creative new pecan products to boost his business. Jennifer Wammack of Berdolls, a commercial bakery, tells how her family ships pies all over the world and distributes them through vending machines. And Thompson also visits the Lamar Senior Center in Austin, one of the last remaining nut-cracking facilities open to the public, where people come after gathering pecans on their own property each autumn. Hopefully, for many holidays to come, we can all enjoy a big slice of Texas's state dessert. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
