Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to break box office records, after having the biggest U.S. opening weekend in history. Tonya Mosley talks with the film's director, Destin Daniel Cretton. Long before Marvel, he worked in a group home for at-risk teens. He says it's an experience that shaped everything he's made since then, and became the movie Short Term 12.Also, we hear from Harriet Clark. She was a baby when her mother was a getaway driver of a robbery of a Brink's truck in 1981. The robbers were members of a radical offshoot of the Weather Underground and the Black Panthers. For 37 years, Clark spent Saturdays visiting her mother in prison. “She figured out how to mother me in some of the most difficult conditions possible,” Clark tells Terry Gross. Her novel, The Hill, draws on her experience visiting her mother in prison. Happy Friday! The Spider-Man meme best represents what is going on in Orange County this season. What are we even fighting about? Rooms, buddies, dildos, and designer purses? The most interesting thing about this episode was seeing what the girls ordered for lunch! We are enjoying how Carmella is showing it all and the women looked amazing as Showgirls! There are certain moments when you realize the world you knew is gone forever. Your childhood home gets cleaned out. The cars you remember disappear. Your favorite mascot gets replaced. And, most devastating of all, 7UP decides it needs to become more lime-forward.We know. Take all the time you need.Episode 83 starts with some actual show business as the crew talks about trying to land a role — or at least get their faces somewhere in the background — in Sheriff Justice: The Series. There's also some movie talk surrounding Scott's short-film adventures before we arrive at the cultural earthquake nobody was prepared for: 7UP is changing its recipe. For the first time in 15 years, the lemon-lime soda is going lime-lemon.That announcement sends this comedy podcast directly into nostalgia mode as Rafe and Moon remember the glory days of 7UP's Uncola marketing, old-school glasses and, most importantly, Cool Spot. Remember Cool Spot? The red dot with sunglasses, sneakers and enough '90s attitude to somehow get his own Sega Genesis game? THAT was branding. Naturally, the conversation becomes a referendum on every mascot decision 7UP has made since, including poor Fido Dido catching strays decades after the fact. The trip down memory lane keeps rolling when the crew talks about cars disappearing from the market, including the Ford Escape, Jaguar F-Pace, Toyota GR Supra and Tesla Model S. That somehow brings Smart cars back into the conversation, which reminds everybody of that brief period when society tried to convince us driving something the size of a roller skate was the future. Then we Crap on Celebrities.Matthew McConaughey tells a story about using his Wedding Planner connection to Jennifer Lopez to help get himself out of a sticky traffic-stop situation in Mexico. Which raises an important question: if Matthew McConaughey still has to name-drop somebody else, what hope do the rest of us have? There's Barbie sequel drama involving Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Greta Gerwig and some potentially enormous paydays. Kelly Ripa talks about needing gum-graft surgery. Selena Gomez and her Wondermind company face allegations in a lawsuit. Spider-Man is putting up gigantic box-office numbers, and the crew dives into a list of movies people online have branded some of the most boring films of the century. Then Anne Hathaway floats the idea that movies where dogs die should automatically get an R rating.Honestly, Old Yeller has been emotionally mugging children for generations, so at least somebody finally opened the investigation. We also get into the return of Ted Lasso, Axl Rose dealing with jaw problems while performing, and Lionel Richie cracking a joke about Usher and Chris Brown that predictably becomes an online debate. Because nothing said into a microphone is allowed to simply be a joke anymore. It must immediately become a panel discussion involving 40,000 strangers. But the centerpiece of the celebrity chaos is a game that deserves its own home edition: Good Tipper or Bad Tipper? The crew works through anecdotal stories involving John Cena, Chuck Norris, David Lee Roth, Dave Chappelle, Scottie Pippen, Shaq, Maria Shriver, 50 Cent, Stanley Tucci, Post Malone, Miley Cyrus, Bruce Willis, Elvis Presley, Jay-Z, Tina Fey, Jennifer Lopez, Kevin Hart, Jane Fonda and Jack Black. Some allegedly tipped huge. Some allegedly tipped terribly. Some stories immediately make the crew question humanity. And Scottie Pippen inspires a nickname so painfully obvious that humanity should be ashamed it took this long: No Tippin' Pippen.Again, these are anecdotes discussed during the show, not our personal surveillance operation into celebrities paying restaurant checks. We barely have enough resources to monitor our own lunch orders. The episode wraps with celebrity birthdays, Steve Martin age guesses, Reginald VelJohnson's incredible history of playing cops and the usual collection of references that make this comedy podcast feel less like a structured entertainment program and more like being trapped at a table with friends who remember every useless cultural detail except why they originally started talking. So pour yourself a 7UP — lemon-lime or the terrifying new lime-lemon variety — tip your server, fire up the Sega Genesis and enjoy another comedy podcast from The Rizzuto Show.Cool Spot, wherever you are: we remember you.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
What happens when you combine expired temp tags, full-contact leopards, a 7UP identity crisis, celebrity tipping drama, six Trans Ams, Burt Reynolds stories, and the real-life return of Buford T. Justice? You get The Rizzuto Show doing what it does best: taking perfectly reasonable topics and absolutely refusing to discuss them reasonably. This collection of Rizz Show chaos starts with the crew discovering they somehow won a St. Louis Magazine A-List award — despite apparently being among the last people to find out. The celebration lasts approximately long enough for Missouri's expired temporary tags to become the next emergency, especially when Rafe admits his own tags are expired. Suddenly, the guy complaining about the system becomes the poster child for it and begins framing his procrastination as a form of peaceful protest. Gandhi had the Salt March. Rafe has paperwork sitting somewhere in his house. From there, things only get more responsible. We encounter a man accused of deploying homemade spike strips to stop people from crossing his lawn, which naturally leads to a serious legal analysis based almost entirely on Home Alone. Another story involves a driver allegedly taking “good morning” as fighting words. Creep Corner opens its doors. The Town Crier gets involved. And eventually we arrive at FULL CONTACT LEOPARDS, because apparently humans weren't generating enough bad decisions on their own. Then comes an existential crisis nobody saw coming:7UP is changing. The legendary lemon-lime soda is going more lime-forward, sending the crew directly into an '80s and '90s nostalgia vortex. Suddenly we're talking about the Uncola, old 7UP glasses, Sega Genesis and the greatest red dot ever to wear sunglasses: Cool Spot.Bring him back, cowards. That trip down memory lane also resurrects Smart cars and other vehicles disappearing from the automotive landscape before Crap on Celebrities takes over. Matthew McConaughey explains how a Jennifer Lopez name-drop once helped him during a traffic stop in Mexico, Barbie sequel negotiations involve enormous amounts of money, and the crew gets into Spider-Man, Ted Lasso, Axl Rose, boring movies and whether killing a dog in a movie should automatically earn an R rating. But then we stumble into a game that could sustain this show for the next decade: Good Tipper or Bad Tipper? The crew reacts to online anecdotes about celebrity tipping involving Shaq, Post Malone, Miley Cyrus, David Lee Roth, Dave Chappelle, Scottie Pippen, JLo, Jack Black, Bruce Willis, 50 Cent, Stanley Tucci and more. Some stories restore our faith in famous people. Others give us No Tippin' Pippen, and honestly, that's enough cultural achievement for one episode. And then things go eastbound and down.Sean and Jason — the guys bringing Sheriff Buford T. Justice and Junior Justice back to life — walk into the studio looking like Smokey and the Bandit escaped the screen and wandered into The Rizzuto Show.Sean even arrives in full Buford mode with a lit cigarette.Nobody tells Sheriff Justice what to do.The guys tell the incredible story of how their Smokey and the Bandit tribute work grew from reenactments and car shows into Sheriff Justice: The Series, a prequel exploring Buford and Junior before their legendary pursuit of the Bandit. They explain how Sedalia, Missouri became the production home, why they're committed to preserving the spirit of Jackie Gleason and Mike Henry's original performances, and how the families connected to those actors have supported what they're doing. Then we get to the cars.Vintage vehicles. Classic cop cars. Period-correct backgrounds. A Trans Am personally autographed by Burt Reynolds.Oh, and Jason owns six Trans Ams, because apparently some people actually achieve their childhood dreams instead of just buying another commemorative T-shirt.Sean also shares what it was like spending a week around Burt Reynolds at a film festival shortly before Reynolds passed away. That leads to stories about Burt's legendary ability to entertain a room, his willingness to tell stories where he wasn't necessarily the hero, and why the man's combination of charisma, cowboy hats, mustaches and muscle cars permanently rewired an entire generation. The nostalgia continues with Paul Williams — Little Enos himself — immediately slipping back into character when he encountered Sean and Jason at a convention. The production stories get even crazier when we learn they filmed through a reported 123-degree heat index during a 14-hour day, because apparently recreating the 1970s also means recreating a time when workplace air conditioning was merely a rumor. And then comes the ultimate Hollywood moment: Sean looks over and realizes he has his own stunt double. That's when you know you've upgraded from “guy doing a tribute” to “guy somebody else gets paid to injure themselves pretending to be.”Naturally, none of this can simply remain an interview. The Rizz Show immediately begins campaigning for roles.Extras become possible speaking parts. Speaking parts become SAG-card dreams. Moon volunteers to protect the Trans Am. Dr Pepper and Diablo sandwiches become potential negotiating tools. At some point this stops sounding like a joke and starts sounding dangerously close to an actual plan.Across all three conversations, it's everything that makes The Rizzuto Show the beautifully unnecessary daily comedy machine that it is: St. Louis stories, weird news, celebrity gossip, nostalgia, pop culture, ridiculous arguments, movie memories, questionable decisions and grown adults becoming emotionally invested in subjects ranging from soda mascots to license plates.Come for the celebrity tipping stories. Stay for Cool Spot. Learn absolutely nothing about proper vehicle registration. Develop an unhealthy desire to own a 1977 Trans Am. And whatever you do, do not engage the leopards in full contact. It's The Rizzuto Show.We won an award, you know.Apparently.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.Expired temp tags about to be a thing of the past in MissouriMidwest curmudgeon, 39, charged with placing homemade spike strip along popular bike path to take petty revenge on child cyclistsManiac allegedly tried to run over jogger 3 times after she wished him ‘good morning'Leopard mauls man who paid $150 for 'full contact' experienceThese Are the Cars Being Discontinued in 2026See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day leaves us with one HUGE question: Does Ned actually remember Peter Parker? In the movie's final moments, Peter finally reintroduces himself to his old best friend — and their secret handshake seems to unlock something in Ned's memory. But is he actually remembering Peter, or has he simply figured out that Peter is Spider-Man? Today J is diving into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and breaking down all the clues, from Ned's suspiciously familiar knowledge of Spider-Man to his history with magic, MJ's lingering instincts, and one VERY important encounter with the Hulk that may prove Doctor Strange's spell has some major loopholes. Because if Ned can remember Peter... maybe MJ can too. #SpiderMan #Marvel #MCU

The fastest way to feel alone is to call it “discipline” and never question the cost. We start joking about Spider-Man, then pivot into something heavier: why so many men relate to loneliness, isolation, and the pressure to carry everything without support. If you've ever told yourself you're just “locked in” when you're really shutting people out, this conversation hits close to home.We break down the “to elevate, you have to separate” mindset and why it can sabotage men's mental health. What happens when you isolate and the results don't come fast enough? What happens when the results do come, but you still feel empty and the goalposts move again? We talk emerging adulthood, the shift from built-in community to quiet apartments, and how growing up online can weaken real-life social skills, dating confidence, and friendship-building.You'll also hear practical strategies that don't require you to disappear: creating space instead of cutting people off, using early mornings for deep work, and taking an honest look at screen time. We weave in ambition, money pressure, and “ethical capitalism” as a way to build goals that serve people without draining your life. If any of this resonates, subscribe, share this with a friend who's been going quiet, and leave a review with the one idea you're taking into your week.Join our Patreon CommunityBuy some merch and ebooksIG: @terryroseland & @amansperspective_

Will director Destin Daniel Cretton rekindle the magic he had in the days of Short Term 12? Will Tom Holland top his performance in The Odyssey? The fourth installment in Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man series is finally here, and of course, we're all over it. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has swung into theaters as both a critical and box-office smash, raking in a billion dollars in just six days and boasting a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes. On the pod, we nerd out over all the comic book goodness packed into the movie, including the cameos from Tarantula, Tombstone, and Ramrod. We also dig into the film's surprising lack of a true central villain, the controversial introduction of Jean Grey into the MCU, played by Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), and debate whether this is Tom Holland's most evolved performance yet as Peter Parker—and Spider-Man. Then we build a quick Spider-Man Hall of Fame before tackling the question on everyone's mind: Are movies back?
Hello, movie maniacs! This week David and Mary watch the little known film Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This latest iteration of everyone’s favourite webhead featuring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal and Sadie Sink is breaking all the box offices. Maybe audiences aren’t tired of well-made superhero movies? But what do Mary and Dave think? Well, let them fansplain it for you! Thanks for listening.
This week the crew recaps a wild weekend — from a chaotic Spider-Man movie theater experience to a surprisingly uplifting funeral that sparked a debate about whether it's okay to enjoy funerals. Then they dive into Russell Westbrook's quiet retirement, the search for the next unanimous NBA icon, and Enes Kanter's ridiculous WNBA draft declaration stunt. Jonah Hill claims he can "annihilate" people with jiu-jitsu, the Lakers get sold for $12 billion, and the music discussion heats up over AI songs, Bad Bunny, and a 12-year-old sensation. The episode wraps with hot takes on whether you need an opinion on every topic, if racism is ever funny, which historical event you'd want to witness, and what's off-limits to discuss with friends.Timestamps:0:00 — Weekend Recap0:50 — Spider-Man & Movie Theater Story3:22 — Aunt's Funeral & Repast7:15 — Baby Shower Meatballs8:56 — Funeral Reflections12:43 — The Funeral Debate15:09 — Russell Westbrook Retirement17:34 — Future NBA Icons19:50 — Enes Kanter & WNBA Stunt27:06 — Jonah Hill Jiu-Jitsu32:21 — Lakers $12B Sale35:19 — Music & AI Songs41:38 — Opinions on Every Topic43:08 — Is Racism Ever Funny?45:46 — Historical Events Random Thought49:01 — Uncomfortable Topics with Friends50:52 — Outro
Message Dan and MikeWe finally sit down to unpack Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth installment in Tom Holland's run as Peter Parker and the first Spidey film from director Destin Daniel Cretton. Picking up four years after No Way Home's spell erased Peter from the world's memory, this is a noticeably darker, more isolated take on the character — Aunt May is gone, his friendships with MJ and Ned are gone, and the arachnid side of his DNA is starting to take over. We dig into how that trauma-driven tone works, and where it doesn't.One of us walks away calling this the weakest of the Tom Holland Spider-Man films, and we're honest about why: a story that feels overcrowded with characters, some shaky CGI work on the Scorpion, and a villain problem that never quite resolves who we're actually supposed to be rooting against. We also talk through the returning cast — Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Mark Ruffalo, Florence Pugh — plus the newer additions, including Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle, Tramell Tillman's William Mesker, Naomi Watts voicing E.D.I.T.H., and a genuinely strong turn from Sadie Sink as Jean Grey that surprised us both.Along the way we get into the film's stunt work and practical martial arts sequences, the choice to make Peter's webs organic again as a nod to Tobey Maguire's era, and what it means that this film is now closing in on two billion dollars worldwide and threatening box office records held by Avengers: Endgame and Titanic. We also share (in maybe too much detail) the theater experience that colored one of our first viewings, because full transparency matters around here.Whether you loved Brand New Day or walked out with the same reservations we did, we want to hear it. And with Avengers: Doomsday looming and a fifth Spider-Man almost certainly on the way, we start speculating about where this saga goes next.If you're not already following along, you can find us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and everywhere else podcasts live, and subscribing to the YouTube channel helps a lot more than you'd think.Support the showOh Brother Podcast:Support the Show! The team discussed upcoming plans for their 300th episode, including potentially featuring archived content and a special edition if listeners suggest ideas. Keith shared updates about resolving RSS issues and his upcoming dental surgery, which will require removing eight teeth and potentially getting a partial denture. News of the Week The group shared news stories, including research on giraffes’ mathematical abilities, a goose alerting a family to a barn fire, and current fashion trends. The unusual news continued with an ongoing investigation into a mysterious local odor and the box-office success of the new Spider-Man movie. Jill shared a story about soccer player Hamed Ali, who set a world record by kicking a ball into a basketball hoop from 39.27 feet. Inspired by Chicago’s successful Special Olympics event that raises over $480,000 annually, Keith proposed organizing a similar rubber duck race fundraiser along the Mississippi River for MCAB. Terry concluded the segment with a story about Turbo, a 50-year-old tortoise rescued from train tracks in England following a 10-minute track shutdown. Jill's Trivia Quiz Jill hosted a trivia quiz about the TV show “I Dream of Jeannie,” testing Keith and Terry’s knowledge of the series. They tackled questions about the cast—including Larry Hagman as Tony Nelson and Barbara Eden as Jeannie—along with guest appearances by stars like Milton Berle and Sammy Davis Jr. The quiz proved challenging when it came to lesser-known characters and guest stars, proving that even familiar shows hold surprising details. Terry's Top 10 List Terry presented a top 10 list of humorous aspects of dating a blind person, touching on surprise fashion choices, becoming a designated storyteller, and unexpected room rearrangements. Anchor Topic Keith reviewed a newly delivered digital projector, expressing disappointment over its lack of accessibility features. Although he noted its solid technical performance, its heavy reliance on visual coordination and lack of wireless connectivity made it nearly impossible for him to use. Because of these accessibility barriers, Keith gave it a low rating and mentioned he may gift it to someone who can utilize it. Email and Final Thoughts Keith shared an email from an old Marine Corps buddy regarding a wardrobe malfunction, followed by a listener email about a debate over when life begins overheard at a barbershop. A voicemail submission presented a unique dilemma involving a man who needed one more child to win a radio contest. Finally, the hosts discussed a voicemail regarding a workplace pay dispute that escalated to theft; Keith expressed sympathy for the employee’s situation while maintaining that illegal action wasn’t the right solution. The Final Word From Our AI Companion This transcript captures an episode of a comedy podcast featuring hosts Keith, Jill, and Terry as they share lighthearted stories, personal updates, and clever visual humor. The episode wrapped up with the hosts signing off and providing contact information for future listener submissions. Show notes written by AI, edited is needed by Keith. This week on The Lonely Stoner, TJ sits down with one of his biggest lifelong influences: his Uncle Curt (aka DurtiCurti, the mastermind behind DurtiBeats). From sneaking into his room to play video games to taking 16-hour road trips to Michigan, DurtiCurti helped shape TJ's taste in music, gaming, and life. This session is a raw dive into the generational shift between the '80s and '90s and today's "fast food" culture. We look back at the chaotic, uncontrolled days of the early internet—reminiscing over the unscripted freedom of MySpace and the absolute lawlessness of Craigslist—and discuss how the modern era has created a toxic "main character syndrome". We also take a massive trip down stoner memory lane, tracking the evolution of dry herb vaping from the days of the Magic Flight Launch Box and the OG Pax to the premium, "buy once, cry once" quality of Storz & Bickel. So whether you Pack a bowl, grab your coffee, starting your workout, getting through your shift, or stuck in traffic. Thank you for listening and letting us cloud your mind.

Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Marvel Studios appears to have found the leader of its new mutant team, as Deadline reported last week that Heartstopper and Warfare star Kit Connor has landed the role of Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, in the future MCU X-Men film. Sources say Connor went through much the same process as Samara Weaving, who was attached as Emma Frost the week prior, meeting with Schreier and Marvel president Kevin Feige alongside a group of candidates who tested after the July 4th holiday before the studio settled on him. Neither Marvel nor Connor has confirmed the casting, and the film, written by Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear co-creator Joanna Calo, still has no release date. Cyclops has been played on screen before by James Marsden and Tye Sheridan, with Marsden set to reprise the role in December's Avengers: Doomsday. Sony and Marvel Studios' Spider-Man: Brand New Day crossed the one-billion-dollar mark overseas in just twelve days of release, making it the second-fastest film ever to reach that number abroad behind Avengers: Endgame. The Destin Daniel Cretton film now stands at $1.67 billion worldwide, split between $654.3 million domestically and $1.013 billion internationally, which makes it the twelfth highest-grossing movie of all time and only the sixteenth ever to clear a billion in foreign markets alone. Universal had a milestone of its own to celebrate, as Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey passed $1.1 billion worldwide to become the highest-grossing film of his career ahead of The Dark Knight Rises, while also becoming the biggest IMAX release ever with $289 million, and it still has China to open on Friday. James Gunn spent part of a Threads session last week putting down one of the most persistent rumors surrounding Matt Reeves' Batman trilogy, telling a fan who asked whether The Batman Part III was being filmed simultaneously with Part II simply, “I can deny.” The theory had gained steam over years of delays, most recently when a redesigned Part II logo appeared to work a Roman numeral III into the artwork, and it offered fans a tidy explanation for why the sequel has taken so long to arrive. In reality, Part II only began principal photography in London in June, and Warner Bros. has already pushed the film from October 2027 to February 18, 2028. Sony and Nintendo's live-action The Legend of Zelda has cast Australian actor Uli Latukefu as Ganondorf under a multi-picture deal, with Severance's Dichen Lachman playing Impa and The Handmaid's Tale's Yvonne Strahovski reported as a queen character. The late Sam Neill also filmed an undisclosed role before his death on July 13, marking one of the final screen performances of his career.Gareth Edwards has exited Universal and Amblin's untitled Jurassic World Rebirth sequel over creative differences, with the studios now searching for a replacement; David Koepp's script is finished and Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey are all still expected back for a 2027 shoot.A24 released the full trailer for Primetime, the Lance Oppenheim drama that Robert Pattinson produces and stars in as To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen, in theaters September 25.Lionsgate has confirmed that Michael 2 is targeting a production start toward the end of this year or in early 2027, with the sequel to this year's Michael Jackson biopic aiming for a 2028 release.Lionsgate is also developing a new Leprechaun film written by horror veterans Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, reviving a franchise that ran eight movies between 1993 and 2018.Nicholas Hoult has been cast in season 2 of HBO's Harry Potter series as Gilderoy Lockhart, a major character in The Chamber of Secrets that was portrayed by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film adaptation.
Cretton grew up in Hawaii, and says movies expanded his perspective: “That is how I traveled. That is how I was exposed to other cultures. That's how I understand how kids grew up in high school on the mainland,” he tells co-host Tonya Mosley. He explains how his job at a group home for at-risk teens inspired his film Short Term 12, how he relates to Peter Parker's loneliness, and how his difficult relationship with his father helps him with directing.Subscribe to our free weekly newsletter Follow us on Instagram Subscribe to our YouTube channel Check out the Fresh Air ArchivesSupport public media with NPR+ and enjoy perks for over 25 podcasts like this one.
