On Today's Episode4 Steps for Working Through an Overwhelming To-Do List [00:00 - 10:54]When we sit down and note everything we have to do for a given project or even a given day, it can sometimes be so overwhelming that we don't know where to start. Or, worse, we don't start! We felt that stress starting to build when we compiled our list of Fall To-do's to make sure our homes are ready for winter. And here's how we took that massive list of jobs and made it manageable!1) MAKE MULTIPLE LISTSRather than creating one massive list, break your list into smaller daily, or weekly to-do's. Making a list small and manageable is key to finding the energy to get those items crossed off!2) DON'T SAVE IT ALL FOR THE WEEKENDIt's easy to make a project list and plan on tackling that list on the weekend. It's honestly the default plan for many of us. But, if you want to ease up your weekend and eliminate the "project dread" we can feel as Saturday gets closer . . . tackle smaller items from your list during the week! Who knows how much you can cross off before Saturday gets here . . . and if you get a good amount of the work finished, you may have plenty of time for actual weekend stuff--like kicking back and relaxing!3) BREAK BIG PROJECTS INTO MULTIPLE TASKSThis is the same concept as what we covered above in Tip #1--it's just that now you're doing this with each large project. So, instead of writing "Clean Windows" on your list for the weekend, write down: Compile Window Cleaning Supplies; Remove Screens; Clean Front Windows; Clean Back Windows. Yes, it's a bit of a mind-game you're playing with yourself . . . but it really works. AND, it makes Tip #2 above easier. For example, you may not have time and energy to clean all the windows after a work day . . . but you absolutely could gather the supplies you need and place them all in a bucket or box in the garage. Sure it was only 15 minutes of gathering . . . but it's 15 minutes you won't have to do on Saturday.4) SET A TIMER AND QUIT AT THE BELL!If all that sounds good, but you're still having trouble getting yourself moving during the week, try this: set a 10 minute or 15 minute timer and tackle some of those small items on your list. Work as fast as you can at some of those tasks and quit when the timer goes off. It's a great way to get large jobs accomplished in chunks that feel painless. I stumbled on this when I stared at my work bench that was a complete disaster. I'd been lazy and negligent and now I had to pay the piper. I was looking at easily a few hours worth of work (it seemed at that point). I didn't want to do that much work, so I put it off until one night I had a brainstorm. I set a timer and worked for 15 minutes and quit. Next night . . . same thing. By the 4th night, I was almost done with the project and rather than having spent a full hour on Saturday . . . I spent 15 painless minutes over the course of 4 nights. It really works! The Big Fall Prep List: Week One Projects [10:54 - 18:55]We're taking our own advice from above and we're breaking down our MASSIVE fall home prep list into 5 or 6 smaller lists. Each week, we'll go over the next list, and finally, by the end of October . . . if you've done all the projects we've mentioned . . . your home will be ready for winter! And it won't have been a terribly painful journey. (Which is GREAT!)Here's the Week One list . . . and we start things off easy!GET ON THE CALENDARMany seasonal service providers see their calendars fill up quickly. So, make those phone calls this week!Call to schedule your sprinkler system winterizationCall to schedule any tree maintenance you may needMake a plan for your leaf removal--if you need bins, get them reserved!Consider scheduling a furnace...

Now, as CIO and Treasurer at the University of Miami, Charmel utilizes data-driven and DEI-focused methods to strengthen his investment processes. Throughout his career, Charmel stressed the importance of context when it came to investing, focusing on the “why” rather than just the numbers.  Charmel attributes much of his success to the mentors who guided him throughout his career. The inherent value of different perspectives and various backgrounds can offer unique insights in the investment arena—a principle that Charmel practices in his day-to-day. Charmel brings humility and critical thinking to his leadership approach, with a focus on enabling his team to reach its full potential. Sidebar Quote: “No matter how busy you get, you always have enough time to give back.” ”Too many people get caught up with the outcome instead of looking at the process. We are very, very focused on the process, because we are really endeavoring to produce consistent outcomes over time.” In this episode we discuss: Charmel's transition from mentee to mentor Diversity as a performance driver Building an investment office similar to “the greats” Charmel began his professional career as an intern at J.P. Do you often find yourself worrying about an outcome that hasn't happened yet? Stressing about the ‘what ifs'? Same!  I was reading something recently that has really stuck with me. To paraphrase, it was along the lines of “If you allow yourself to worry about something that hasn't happened yet, you're allowing yourself to worry about it twice.”  If something is out of your control, it doesn't need to take up space in the present. In today's short and sweet episode, I explain how to move past the ‘what if' fear and uncertainty so you don't get stuck.      What's in this episode: Determining If It's Something You Can Control (or Can't). Having tougher body image days is perfectly normal. Yes, even when you're actively working on your mental and physical health. Yes, even when you're strength training every day. Let's look at how we can start being kinder to ourselves when these thoughts happen. Key Takeaways How to Work Through Negative Body Thoughts Journal it Out: Mentally backtrack in your day, or the day before, to see what, if anything, influenced that event. Check-in with Yourself: Is there a basic need you're not meeting for yourself? Understand your Menstrual Cycle: Your cycle can impact your mood and how you feel about your body Practice Gratitude: Especially when you're feeling challenging ways about your body Body Image Issues Impact Everyone Challenging and negative thoughts about your body are perfectly normal. They're not pleasant or productive, but please let me reassure you that they're absolutely normal. We all experience them, even when we're actively working on our positive mental and physical health. It's not realistic to never have a negative thought about your body. And that's okay. Working towards some form of body neutrality is a journey, not a destination. Working Through a Negative Body Image When you do have negative or challenging thoughts about your body, it's important to try to get to the root cause of these thoughts. First, take some time to journal out what might have influenced these thoughts throughout the last day or two. You might also be neglecting one of your basic needs. When was the last time you ate or drank water? Are you getting enough sleep?  For longer-term solutions, start tracking your menstrual cycle as your cycle has an impact on how you feel mentally and towards yourself. Finally, take up a daily gratitude practice to help shift your entire perspective. How do you currently feel about your own body image? What struggles have you gone through? Share your experiences with me in the comments on the episode page. In This Episode Why it's normal to have challenging thoughts about your body [6:00] Why it's not realistic to expect to never have a challenging thought about your body [7:45] The importance of body neutrality [13:00] You deserve to eat. Make sure you're eating regularly [33:30] Why you should track your menstrual cycle [24:00] How challenging yourself with practicing gratitude can help shift your perspective [27:45] Quotes “It is still normal to have challenging thoughts about your body. You're not failing or doing this wrong if you still have those doubts, negative self-talk, or aren't at body neutrality or beyond to body liberation, or wherever you are on that spectrum.” [6:28] “By thinking or expecting that we're never going to have the negative thought or the challenging feeling ever again, we're actually setting ourselves up for not being as adept or experienced with getting through those challenging thoughts or feelings.” [9:45] “You need to eat. We need to eat. When you're running on low energy, your blood sugar is really low, and you're hangry, your mood is affected. You're feeling mentally foggy, more anxious, and on edge. Food is essential.” [20:03] “Gratitude is a muscle that you have to practice. Yes, you can feel these ways about yourself, you can feel down, sad, grief. All of those emotions are normal. At the same time, you can challenge yourself to give even a little bit of gratitude, just a little bit. It can be both - and.” [27:18] “It's okay for those negative body thoughts to pop up, even at positive times in our life. They probably will. Working on that resilience, instead of walking around on eggshells, is ultimately what makes you more resilient, more able to unlearn the things that aren't serving you, and lean into what it's like to be on this journey. It's never going to be perfect but it is so worthwhile.” [31:31] Featured on the Show Join the Waitlist for the Online Strength Nutrition Program Follow Steph on Instagram Steph Gaudreau Website Check out the full show notes here! Hi, I’m Nic Shields…. and in this podcast - Working Through it - I chat to musicians, business people, personalities, and people just like you and me who have worked through something in their life. Whether it be something in their professional lives like losing their dream job or risking it all and moving to a new land to pursue a passion… or something in their personal lives like dealing with immense loss or being confronted by health issues. It’s not all doom and gloom - we’ll explore from where they started, what the process of working through it looked like and where they’ve ended up now. Some of it is not what they expected, but that’s the beauty of life. I hope to showcase some really interesting stories that you might be able to learn from or help you along in your own journey. I have some fantastic guests already lined up but if you know of someone who has a great story that you think people should hear - let me know by dropping me a message on twitter. My handle is @nicshields. If you think someone needs to hear these stories, please share this podcast with them. The first episode will launch soon. Thank you so much for your time! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/workingthroughit/message

Benefits to Working Through your Resentments 2 of 3 In the second podcast episode on resentments, we dive into how resentments can become part of how you define yourself.  There are great benefits to working through a resentment toward a person, situation, or institution. Getting unstuck from a feeling or situation Freeing yourself to move forward Stoping re-injuring of yourself with a past hurt Forgiving of yourself and others Growing in compassion for others because you are not stuck in your own issues  Oddly, enough there are also reasons to keep your resentments and make them part of your identity.  The holding on to resentments often helps us avoid things that scare us or creates a reason why we won't/can't move forward in our lives.

Third of the series "Working Through the World's Chaos to Find Supernatural Peace". Internal Chaos is like a hiker on a rough path on the trail. You know that when you get past the rough part you will find the splendid view. Life has rough spots, too. Did you ever consider that these rough parts could actually lead you to something way above average? God gives us the grace we need to climb over or the patience to work around hardship to get to our destination. As you desire to be happy do you need to let go of yesterday's pain, mistakes and regrets? How can a fruitful encounter with God be the answer?

Second of the series "Working Through the World's Chaos to Find Supernatural Peace". Thomas Aquinas said: "No one can live without joy. That is why a person deprived of spiritual joy goes after carnal pleasures." If we are not growing in one area, it is like fertilizing and tolerating the other, so that the other grows. In our culture today, it seems like the carnal is growing by leaps and bounds. It doesn't have to happen. God gives us the grace to rebalance our scales.

First of the series "Working Through the World's Chaos to Find Supernatural Peace". What's in your heart? Supernatural peace? Or chaos? Too often we can get caught up in a negative attitude and complaining. We want others to know about the half empty glass and accuse others of being the culprits of emptying it. Anxiety causes chaos. Anxiety and stress can make you physically sick. Jesus tells us it can affect our spiritual well-being too. St. Paul knows we can get our mind off our worries by counting and speaking our blessings and joys.

We received a Facebook question from our friend Bradley Erickson asking us "How do you finish and ship the dang thing after months(or years) of iteration and work?" after we published the episode 'How to turn an idea into a game?'. So, we got together and recoded this episode to answer his question. Enjoy!  How Do You Know when a Game is Done? This brings up the question, "Is it ever done?" Well, at the end of the day you need to just ship it and get it out. This episode will give you some insights on how you can tell when you're ready to rap it up. Creating the Minimum Viable Product Ideas are everywhere. An important skill to develop is taking an idea from start to finish. In general it is good practice to finish what you started. Finding a way to create a minimum viable product and getting that out in the world will do wonders for you and even hopefully earn you some money. What Does Minimum Viable Product Mean? From a gameplay perspective: You can feel the meta loop - the core game loop You're able to replay that loop in the right amount of time and have a continuation of where you left off The whole system is working for you Social Media - perfectly acceptable high level meta loop or meta game If you can get that short term, medium term and long term loops in place that's a good indicator that you're close to being done No Bugs It is extremely important that as your playing in all three loops of your game  that you're not coming across any bugs or errors. The worst thing you can do when launching a game is get a bunch of 1 stars for something you had control of. Soft Launch Launching to a small market first avoids the disastrous results if there are any problems with your game. Analytics Find ways to get as much feedback as you can. Seeing how people are playing your game can be a safety measure to catch problems really and make sure there are no road blocks. Using achievements is a cheating way of doing analytics. It works based on what achievements the player is getting you'll have some analytics. Brian used Flurry Analytics with his game Roboto and put a hook in the beginning of each level to gauge how people were playing the game. What Corners Do You Cut To Get Your Game Out Sooner? It is really hard to hand something over to someone when you know it had flaws. At some point you have to make the decision that this is good enough. But what do you give up on? Monetization On free-to-play games, you can shave (not cut out) on monetization and focus more on player retention so they are more likely to play the game and stay with it; then over time you can introduce more areas to monetize like more in-app purchases. How about an in-app purchase that takes the ads away, for instance. Amount of Assets Visual polish is more favorable that the amount of assets. Instead of making six worlds for your game, you can put all your focus on worlds one and two and make them absolutely amazing. Determining When Your Game Is Done  Create An Amazing Experience Your experience can be shorter and better. Keep in mind, the game doesn't have need to be the everything game that does all kinds of stuff. Players are going to move on to a game that has a different kind of experience - go in understanding that. But, the experience you're making is so special and so different and so unlike anything else that they only get it when playing your game. So, take that one thing that you're doing so far and you've presented it in such a brilliant way  that it's going to be unique and fresh and that's why they're sticking with it. Working Through the Half Way Point When working on a game, about half way through the game, you want to start working on the next game. Don't. Finish that thought (remember, it was once a brilliant idea) and then move on to your next game instead of trying to turn this game into your next game. It could be a tough pivot.
