Driftglass and Blue Gal compare Bush's Iraq debacle with Trump's Iran war—the lying, the cover-ups, the profiteering, the attacks on critics—revealing Trump isn't a break from the Republican past but a continuation of it, just bigger, dumber, and louder. The episode also discusses how the New York (effin') Times deliberately cleans up Trump's incoherent rambling while adding "uhs" and "ums" to try to make AOC look stupid. All this plus Illinois primary results and the national media's desperate hunt for "Democrats in Disarray." It's about fake WMDs then and now, and a very, very complicit media sanitizing fascism. (And we talk about the Illinois Democratic Primaries! They were counting votes as we recorded.) Episode 977 examines the 2026 Illinois Democratic primary while dissecting David Axelrod's fantasy that Democrats should rerun the Obama 2008 campaign in 2028, as if the berserk Republican backlash to Obama never happened. Driftglass and Blue Gal discuss how legacy media pundits use lazy abstractions about "the people" and "the voters" while pretending the Republican party didn't become a full-on fascist movement on their watch. The episode introduces "an apple made of razors"—David French's technique of piling up Both Sides turds before one perfunctory paragraph disclaiming what he's obviously doing, the opposite of Brooks's "razor in the apple." It's about false choices, selective memory, and why the #1 priority in 2028 must be tearing out the Republican party root and branch, not another round of bipartisan healing.Stay in Touch! Brooke Hopper stays close to her craft. Before she hopped on a call with us to chat about her role at Adobe, she was deep in Cursor prototyping navigation design ideas. Though Brooke holds an individual contributor role after more than a decade at Adobe, she's managed to have influence and demonstrate leadership without being relegated to management. This is what many designers dream of—craft and career. Bonus content and more on our Substack: https://designbetterpodcast.com/p/brooke-hopper As Senior Principal Designer for Machine Intelligence and New Technology, she helped design the very first Firefly experiments and is now working on unreleased tools that raise fundamental questions about whether things like non-destructive editing, or even layers, still mean what they once did. If you listen carefully, you might get some clues about the products Adobe is cooking up next. But Brooke is more than a product thinker. She's also a design educator, leading a partnership between Adobe and Parsons called “Not Generated” — a name she chose deliberately to start a conversation, not end one. In this episode, we get into what it actually means to use AI as a creative collaborator rather than a shortcut, why design education needs to stop teaching tools and start teaching taste, and why Brooke believes this moment might be the most exciting time in her career. Bio Brooke Hopper is a design leader, speaker, and champion for artists — passionate about building community through creativity and designing better experiences for some of the most talented people in the world. Her work spans platforms and products, always centered on making space for artists and creators to thrive, collaborate, and stay at the heart of the creative process. With years of experience building 0-to-1 products and leading innovation in ambiguous spaces, she turns uncertainty into opportunity — translating bold ideas into tools that empower creative expression. *** Premium Episodes on Design Better This ad-supported episode is available to everyone. Why do so many pelvic rehab clinicians love treating patients… but feel frustrated with their jobs?In this episode we dig into the results from our State of Pelvic Rehab Survey and talk about three things every pelvic PT and OT employee should be advocating for in their workplace. The data was eye-opening.67% of clinicians are doing unpaid documentation. That means many rehab providers are literally working for free so their employer can be reimbursed by insurance. We also found that 79% of clinicians don't have a regular clinical mentor, and 74% receive no paid mentorship time in their job.At the same time, most clinicians also report very small continuing education budgets. You can't grow without support — which means you should have either strong mentorship or a meaningful con-ed budget. And then there's raises. The average raise reported in our survey was just 1.8%.Nearly 81% of clinicians received raises of 3% or less, which means many pelvic rehab providers are effectively taking a pay cut every year after inflation. In this episode we break down three things every employee deserves — and give scripts you can use to advocate for yourself professionally and respectfully.Pick one.Start the conversation. And see what kind of workplace you're really in.About UsNicole and Jesse Cozean founded Pelvic PT Rising to provide clinical and business resources to physical therapists to change the way we treat pelvic health. Does your partner's touch make your skin crawl? You're not broken—and this is fixable.Touch aversion is when affectionate or sexual touch from your partner feels wrong in your body— irritating, threatening, or like you need to escape. This can happen even with light, loving touch. This isn't about attraction. It's a nervous system response— and it's more common than you think. In this episode, you'll learn:What touch aversion actually is (and why it's not rejection, it's protection)8 causes beyond sexual trauma—including disembodied consent, emotional coercion, being "touched out" from kids, unresolved resentments, and attachment patternsWhy therapy may help you understand it but doesn't solve it (and what does)Why your partner acting hurt about it makes it worse, even though it's understandableThe Three-Touch Discovery Process— a practice you can try today to start reconnecting with what your body actually wantsTouch aversion happens when your nervous system has learned that touch isn't safe— even with a safe partner. You can't think your way out of a body-based response. You need new somatic experiences to re-pattern.This is solvable. But you need guided work with someone who specializes in nervous system re-patterning, not just talk therapy. So we'll talk about what that looks like. The last ten nights of Ramadan are approaching. Nights unlike any other. Nights in which sins can be erased. Nights in which a servant can move from distance to closeness in a single moment. Nights that hold a reward greater than a lifetime. Yet many of us enter them unaware. Still distracted. Still treating them like ordinary nights. In this episode, Ustadh Muhammad Tim Humble reminds us what these final nights truly are, why the Prophet ﷺ changed his entire routine for them, and why relying on a single night could mean missing the greatest opportunity of the year. Laylatul Qadr may arrive on any of these nights. And a single night within them is better than more than eighty years of worship. The question is not whether these nights will come. The question is whether our hearts will be ready when they do. Have you ever felt your heart open and chest expand in a way you can't explain? Suddenly you feel drawn to Allah, to prayer, to practising Islam - even if you don't fully understand why. For many people, this moment of guidance arrives unexpectedly, often bringing both excitement and confusion. In this episode, we reflect on the journey of the newly guided heart - the questions it faces, the confusion of a changing life, and the first steps that help a person move forward with clarity. Guidance is the greatest blessing a person can receive. But like any journey, it requires direction. This reminder explores where that journey begins, what foundations matter most, and how to navigate a world full of voices, opinions, and distractions while holding firmly to the path of truth. Ustadh breaks down how we can turn those beautiful first moments of guidance into a lifelong journey towards Allah. Some hearts enter Ramadan carrying a quiet weight. Not the pain of sudden loss, but the pain of long waiting. Dua made again and again… yet the answer seems delayed. This episode speaks to the heart that feels worn down by waiting - the heart that still hopes this Ramadan will bring healing, direction, and relief. Through the story of Zakariyya (عليه السلام) and the words of the Prophet ﷺ, we are reminded why no waiting is ever meaningless. If your heart feels tired from asking, this episode is for you. There comes a moment in a believer's journey when something quietly changes. You realise you're not where you used to be. Not where you hope to be, either. But at least… you're moving in the right direction. This episode speaks about the heart that has begun its journey back to Allah. A reminder that no step toward Him is ever small, and that Allah welcomes the returning servant with a mercy greater than we can imagine. The Prophet ﷺ told us that Allah is more joyful at the repentance of His servant than a man who finds his lost provisions in the middle of a barren desert. And sometimes the path back does not begin with something overwhelming. It begins with small, consistent acts that keep the heart moving toward Allah. Because what matters in the end is not where we started, but where we finish. Has your teenage self ever felt like you're a different person depending on who you're around? Laughing at things you don't find funny… changing how you speak, dress, or act just to fit in. The pressure to belong can quietly reshape who you are. But a Muslim's identity was never meant to be built by the crowd. In a world constantly telling you who to be, Islam anchors your identity in something far stronger. This episode explores the pressure of fitting in, the power of friendship, and why the strongest identity a young Muslim can have is the one rooted in Iman. Because when your roots are strong, no trend, crowd, or opinion can shake who you truly are. Sisters, have you ever reached iftar and realised you haven't sat down all day? Preparing the meal, serving the family, caring for the children - while others sit comfortably to break their fast or head to the masjid for Taraweeh. Many sisters quietly sacrifice their time in Ramadan, sometimes wondering where their own moments of worship fit in. This episode is a reminder for the Muslimah whose heart sacrifices for others. Through the Qur'an and Sunnah, we reflect on how Allah sees every hidden effort, every act of service, and every moment of patience done for His sake. Because the sister who serves her family for the sake of Allah may be earning rewards far greater than she realises. And the journey to Jannah may be unfolding through the very sacrifices she makes every day. Many hearts in Ramadan begin reconnecting with the Qur'an, but then a deeper longing appears: the desire to truly become from the people of the Qur'an. In this episode, we reflect on the greatness of the Qur'an, why its words have the power to heal hearts, and how a believer can begin building a real relationship with it. Drawing from the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the powerful words of Ibn al-Qayyim, this reminder explores the avenues through which a person can love the Qur'an. Because when a heart truly learns to love the Qur'an, it is a sign that it has begun to love Allah. This week on the Deadpod, we've got the second set from the Grateful Dead's Mardi Gras show on March 3rd, 1987. After the parade winds through, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band joins the boys for a loose and funky "Iko Iko." It takes a minute for everyone to sync up, but it's all part of the fun — you can feel how much they're enjoying themselves. The set really kicks into gear with "Saint of Circumstance," followed by a gorgeous "Terrapin Station." Out of "Drums" and "Space," the band fires up "Gimme Some Lovin'," then slides into a sweet "Wharf Rat," "Throwin' Stones," and a big "Touch of Grey" to close things out. Jerry trips up on a line during the "Brokedown Palace" encore, but the crowd — and the band — help him along. It's one of those perfectly human Dead moments that make this show fun to hear. Episode 976 examines the signs and portents showing Trump's base starting to fracture as broken promises about Epstein files and "no foreign wars" collide with reality. Driftglass and Blue Gal track special election upsets across the country, from New Hampshire to Georgia's R+19 district where even Trump's handpicked candidate couldn't avoid a runoff after 22% of MAGA voters disobeyed orders. The episode explores why Joe Rogan claims Trump supporters feel "betrayed" while refusing to admit his own terrible judgment, and why Trump is desperately pushing the SAVE Act as his only hope to rig the midterms. It's about reading the obvious signs everyone can see—the temperature dropping, the sky turning green, and the sound of freight trains roaring as the Republican coalition tears itself apart.Cover art: NASA Stay in Touch! Cult Classic Status from Bold Choices (00:39) The film's decision to kill most of the original cast early was a major risk that shaped its lasting appeal. This choice was tied to marketing a new toy line, forcing the removal of older characters to introduce new ones. The high character death count was unusual for 1980s cartoons but resonated as a memorable and impactful narrative choice. Sam Alicea emphasized the movie's unique "music video" style and violent tone as key to its charm. Soundtrack as a Defining Feature (00:29) The film features a heavy metal soundtrack with songs like "The Touch" and Weird Al Yankovic's contribution, which remain popular. Sam highlighted the soundtrack's role in making the movie enjoyable even when used as background during chores. The soundtrack's placement sometimes felt forced but added to the overall energetic vibe of the film. The music helped cement the movie's nostalgic value and cultural impact beyond just the story. Animation Quality and Style (00:32) The animation is a mix of highly detailed hand-drawn sequences and inconsistent lower-budget scenes. Key moments like Unicron's introduction and the transformation of Galvatron show impressive craftsmanship. Some sequences, such as Autobot City's transformation, defy logic but maintain visual excitement. The movie's aesthetic reflects typical 1980s animation with a blend of impressive and sloppy elements. Character and Design Highlights (00:14, 00:33) The introduction of new characters like Hot Rod and Cup served marketing goals but received mixed reception; some preferred legacy characters instead. The Dinobots, especially Grimlock, were fan favorites noted for their personality and screen presence. Decepticons like Galvatron and Starscream stood out, with Starscream's treacherous antics praised. New designs leaned toward smoother, rounded shapes compared to the original blockier forms, signaling the toy line shift. Strategic Marketing and Toy Line Impact The movie functioned primarily as a vehicle to launch a new toy line, influencing story and character decisions deeply (00:12, 00:16). Toy Line Rollout Drives Plot and Character Fate (00:12) Killing off legacy characters cleared the stage for a new roster designed to sell fresh toys. Characters like Cup were introduced primarily to support new toy sales rather than story needs, frustrating some fans. Hot Rod's arc was designed to establish a fresh hero while maintaining toyetic appeal. The shift to new designs reflected a strategic move to modernize the brand and stimulate consumer interest. Balancing Narrative and Marketing Needs (00:16) The movie's story and character choices sometimes sacrificed cohesion for toy marketing goals. Legacy characters like Perceptor and the Dinobots were retained to maintain continuity and fan connection. Some characters, like Ultra Magnus, were less favored due to lack of narrative effectiveness but existed for toy continuity. The film's pacing and tone reflected the tension between storytelling and commercial objectives. Voice Cast and Star Power Usage (00:24) Leonard Nimoy's casting as Galvatron was a notable stunt but was not sustained beyond the movie. Orson Welles' last role as Unicron added gravitas despite limited credit and technical challenges with his audio. Voice changes and stunt casting decisions were influenced by budget and potential marketing impact. The cast choices reflect a blend of marketing intent and creative ambition. Narrative and Character Development Critiques The movie's storytelling assumes audience familiarity and presents mixed character arcs, impacting accessibility and engagement (00:38, 00:59). High Barrier for New Viewers (00:38) Nick Wolfe identified the movie as not beginner-friendly, expecting viewers to know extensive Transformers lore. The lack of exposition around key characters and events made it confusing for newcomers. Proposed solutions included adding narrated backstory and flashbacks to ease new viewers into the plot. This gap likely contributed to the movie's commercial failure despite strong fan following. Character Arcs and Roles (00:16, 00:59) Hot Rod's character is a flawed hero whose leadership rise felt unearned, creating mixed audience reception. Cup's role was criticized for being a new character inserted mainly for toy reasons rather than story depth. The pitch suggested replacing Cup with a legacy character like Ironhide to strengthen narrative bonds. Optimus Prime's death remains a pivotal emotional moment but complicates continuity and future storytelling. Supporting Characters and Dynamics (01:06, 01:09) Grimlock's interactions with Hot Rod added needed conflict and character development. Supporting characters like RC and Springer were noted as effective background players without overwhelming the story. Starscream's consistent treachery was highlighted as a strong character trait enhancing the villain dynamic. There was consensus that some Decepticon characters disappeared too quickly, weakening the villain ensemble. Proposed Improvements and Alternate Pitch Nick Wolfe's detailed pitch aimed to make the movie more accessible, coherent, and emotionally resonant without losing core elements (00:39, 00:42). Introductory Narration and Flashbacks (00:42) Suggested opening with Optimus Prime narrating key backstory events to orient new viewers. Including flashbacks to important episodes would provide context for the war, characters, and stakes. This would bridge the gap between fans and newcomers, enhancing story clarity. It also sets up the importance of Energon and Autobot City more clearly. Expanded Character Development and Role Reassignments (00:43, 00:51) Proposed making Cup more like Ironhide or Tanker (an original draft character) to improve narrative depth. Hot Rod would be shown as a capable fighter before his failures, building audience empathy. Grimlock and Hot Rod's relationship would be deepened with conflict and eventual teamwork. Optimus Prime would be critically wounded but kept alive on life support, preserving his legacy. Streamlined Plot and Group Dynamics (00:50) Consolidated the Junkion and Quintesson arcs into a single planet scenario for simplicity. Divided Autobots into clear factions with distinct challenges to create focused narrative threads. Added heroic sacrifices and teamwork moments to raise stakes and emotional impact. The pitch ended with Optimus evolving into Ultra Magnus, aligning with toy line needs while preserving character continuity. Maintaining Cult Appeal While Improving Accessibility (01:03) The pitch carefully retained key emotional beats like Optimus Prime's near-death and Hot Rod's rise. It balanced new viewer guidance with fan service to preserve the movie's iconic moments. Suggested minor tweaks to Unicron's scale and lore to reduce confusion without major changes. The approach aimed to prevent later franchise regrets about character handling seen in season three. Fan and Host Perspectives on Movie's Legacy The hosts and guest expressed strong affection for the movie's nostalgic and cultural value despite its flaws (00:59, 01:00). Embracing the Movie's 1980s Roots (01:00) Sam Alicea stressed the film's authentic 80s vibe, embracing both its high-quality animation and its rough edges. The movie was seen as a time capsule of 80s animation and storytelling norms, including its willingness to embrace trauma. The soundtrack's energy and the movie's unapologetic style were key to its enduring love. There was reluctance to change the movie too much, preserving its unique charm. Appreciation of Character Moments and Humor (01:09) Starscream was praised for his consistent jerkiness, providing comic relief and memorable villainy. The Decepticons' internal conflicts were contrasted with the Autobots' camaraderie, enriching character dynamics. The hosts lamented the disappearance of classic Decepticons when newer ones appeared. The blend of action, humor, and character quirks contributed to the movie's lasting appeal. Community and Ongoing Engagement (01:12, 01:16) Nick Wolfe and hosts highlighted fan communities like the Certain Point of View Media Discord for ongoing discussions. References to other Transformers properties like Beast Wars show layered fan engagement across generations. The show's Patreon and related projects encourage deeper fan interaction and content creation. The continued interest in the movie reflects its significance beyond initial box office performance. Distribution and Community Outreach The podcast promotes broader engagement through Patreon, additional shows, and social media presence (01:16). Patreon Support and Exclusive Content (01:16) The show thanks executive producer-level patrons by name, recognizing their financial support. Patreon offers early episode clips, essays on geek culture, and D&D topics to supporters. Essays like "Never Go Full Ranger" provide added value and deepen listener engagement. This support sustains the podcast's production and community activities. New Shows and Guest Hosting Opportunities (01:17) The launch of "Trade School," a comic book guest-hosted show, expands the network's content diversity. The format encourages fans to share positive takes on trade paperbacks in brief episodes. This initiative fosters community involvement and fresh perspectives. The network invites submissions, broadening participation from listeners. Social Media and Contact Channels (01:13, 01:16) Hosts provide social media handles and highlight the Discord server as a key interaction hub. Nick Wolfe shares his Reddit and Discord activity, emphasizing low-pressure involvement. The Discord serves as a central place for fan discussion and host engagement. Listeners are encouraged to tag hosts for responses and participate in the fan community. Upcoming Episode and Network Branding (01:18) The next podcast episode will cover "Highlander 2: The Quickening," maintaining a focus on cult and flawed films. The show's production credits and branding reinforce a professional and creative identity. The network's website and YouTube presence offer additional access points. This continuity supports sustained audience growth and brand recognition.

When I was a teenager, I was getting into a bit of trouble and had a strong desire to attend a different school. Much later in life, I discovered that I had actually been accepted into that school, but my mother had held the acceptance letter back from me. Instead, she enrolled me in a computer science and programming program. What that experience gave me was something incredibly valuable — it taught me how to think, plan, formulate ideas, recognize patterns, and write code. At the time, it wasn't very common for women to have a background in computer programming, but it became part of my foundation. Even though I later realized that programming itself wasn't the path I wanted to pursue, the way it trained my mind has shaped me for the rest of my life. Now we live in a world where artificial intelligence is everywhere. There's new AI news and innovation almost every day, and at the core of it all is code. But underneath that technology are humans. We are physical beings. We are emotional beings. We are mental beings. We are spiritual beings. We are relational beings. And we are financial beings. Financial freedom is important, but without taking care of the other areas — physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and relational — it's very difficult to experience true rewards in the financial area. I often think about these aspects of life the way a programmer thinks about code. Each of us has a unique code — a kind of life formula — created through family, friends, environment, history, trauma, ideas, and the information we absorb every day. All of those influences create patterns that shape how we behave, achieve, and receive. Interestingly, many people focus heavily on achieving but struggle with receiving. In programming, when something doesn't work, you debug the code. You find the issue and correct it. Life works the same way. --- Follow & Let's Get in Touch! Episode 975 takes a trip back to Chicago to explore how big cities weather economic shocks that would destroy smaller towns—a lesson that matters as Trump's oil crisis, job losses, and ACA cuts hit rural Trump voters hardest. Driftglass and Blue Gal examine the fragile interconnectedness of small-town economies and why cascade failures are coming to red America, where MAGA voters are about to learn the hard way that Obamacare and the ACA are the same thing. The episode explores how scale matters in both directions, from moving government jobs between cities to surviving the economic voodoo practiced by a corrupt racist lunatic. Grab your pen and notebook for this, you're going to want ALL the notes from this episode! George and Dr. Laurie answer a mailbag question from a longtime listener about bl*w jobs. More specifically, wanting to know how to talk to their spouse about feeling disappointed that this isn't happening in their sex life. We know that this might be a tense topic for some but our hosts do a fantastic job of equalizing this and addressing what stops oral sex from happening for either partner. Touch, taste, smell and thoughts around the physical aspects of the act are some of the reasons that block or*l sex from being a more regular part of your repertoire. Laurie and George give us some tips and tricks on how to improve basic genital hygiene.
