Our guest is Sawako Okochi who is the co-chef and co-owner of Shalom Japan, which she opened in 2013 with her husband and co-chef, Aaron Israel. Shalom Japan is unique because Sawa and Aaron combine Japanese and Jewish food cultures on one menu. The unique concept has proven successful as they celebrate the 10th year of Shalom Japan. They also have just published a beautiful book titled “Love Japan – Recipes From Our Japanese American Kitchen”. In this episode, we will discuss how Sawa and Aaron met and decided to open a restaurant together, the overlapping and contrasting elements in Japanese and Jewish foods, creative menu items at Shalom Japan, what they want to share with us through the new book, and much, much more!!!Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. Chanie Apfelbaum is the author of a really cool new book, Totally Kosher, and the force behind Busy in Brooklyn, a go-to resource for kosher recipes and thoughts on modern Jewish living. We wanted to have Chanie into the studio to talk about the many nuances of modern kosher cooking, and to ask her some pointed questions about her modern Orthodox life. Chanie was super game to talk about many topics, including how the recipes in her book are not only for the religious set. We hope you enjoy this talk. Also on the show, we catch up with Sawako Okochi and Aaron Israel, founders of Brooklyn restaurant Shalom Japan. They speak about their great new book, Love Japan.MORE FROM CHANIE APFELBAUM:Busy in Budapest [BIB]This Streusel-Topped One Might Be My New Favorite [The Kitchn]A Brief Chat With the Author Who Wants to Modernize Kosher Cooking [NY Mag]FOLLOW, FOLLOW, FOLLOW:instagram.com/busyinbrooklyninstagram.com/shalomjapaninstagram.com/mattrodbardinstagram.com/taste

Amen.

Bryan Wolfmueller Pastor Bryan Wolfmueller of Hope Lutheran Church in Aurora, Colorado and co-host of Table Talk Radio is our special guest. Pr. Wolfmueller explains the medieval doctrine of the three estates, and how Martin Luther's interpretation of it was the key political insight of his career. The original idea was that there were three "orders" in life: those who worked, those who prayed, and those who fought. The home, the church, and the state. To be a part of one meant you could not be a part of the others. Luther recognized that, unlike the early Church fathers and medieval theologians, the three estates actually overlap and people are a part of multiple "orders." This week on Armed Lutheran Radio we learn about the word “Marcionism,” a 2nd Century gnostic heresy taught by Marcion of Sinope. Marcion suggested that the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament are different gods. One is violent and cruel, the other loving and forgiving. Ballistic Minute with Sergeant Bill Sgt. Bill shares some lessons learned the hard way about gear you might want to bring with you to a match, just in case the weather takes a turn for the worse. Aaron Israel of Fundamental Defense Aaron Israel is building off Sgt. Bill's tip from Episode 74 RE reality based training, with tips for what to look for (and to look out for) when choosing a reality based self-defense course. Mia's Motivations with Mia Anstine Mia Anstine found her some air rifles at a recent Professional Outdoor Media Association (POMA) event. Clinging to God and Guns Rev. John Piper is back and he's brought his cocky swagger with him. Asked to respond to his suggestion that people not buy guns with their economic stimulus checks, Rev. Piper explains why guns are a bad idea, because Christian missionaries refused to use them against Huaorani savages in Ecuador in 1956. Prayer of the Week O Lord, who never fails to help and govern those whom You bring up in Your steadfast fear and love, make us to have a perpetual fear and love of Your holy name; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. Amen. www.ArmedLutheran.us/alr-episode-76/ www.CooksHolsters.com
This week on Armed Lutheran Radio, Lloyd responds to shares some thoughts from James 3:1 in response to the Alexandria shooting, responds to some listener feedback, reviews the Canik TP9SF Elite (pronouncing it correctly in the process) and takes on an arrogant, elitist PhD in Clinging to God and Guns. Plus a Ballistic Minute tip from Sgt. Bill, and a self-defense tip from Aaron Israel. Gear Review: Canik TP9SF EliteLloyd reviews this striker-fired pistol from Turkish manufacturer Canik55 after using it to place 4th at the Oklahoma State IDPA Championship. Commentary: We Need Emotion Control Liberalism is the politics of emotion. And the progressive, anti-Trump left, has lost control of their emotions. Given the level of irrational fear and hatred on the Left, the shooting in Alexandria, Virginia was only a matter of time in coming. Ballistic Minute with Sergeant Bill Shooting prone ain't fun. There are three basic ways to do it, and Sgt. Bill shares his thoughts on each technique. Aaron Israel of Fundamental Defense Aaron Israel urges us to think differently about gun safety and to use safety rules that have integrity. Mia's Motivations with Mia Anstine Mia was unable to join us this week but we hope to have her back next episode. Clinging to God and Guns Pastor Bennett was unable to join us this week so Lloyd is flying solo, tackling a segment from the Things Not Seen podcast, featuring a PhD named David J. Dunn. Dr. Dunn thinks you are childish for not wanting to give up your “dangerous toys” in order to save the lives of children and he tries to convince you that Jesus told his disciples to buy swords, because he wanted to “look like a rebel” by hanging out with armed troublemakers. Prayer of the Week O God, the Strength of all those who put their trust in You, mercifully accept our prayers; and because through the weakness of our mortal nature we can do no good thing, grant us the help of Your grace that in keeping Your commandments we may please You both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. This week on Armed Lutheran Radio, Lloyd and Pastor Bennett try to make sense of a video from a Taoist Christian (?) who claims to be the only sane Christian on the planet and who seems to have learned everything he knows about guns from video games and D&D. Plus tips from Mia, Sgt. Bill, and Aaron Israel. Ballistic Minute with Sergeant Bill Sgt. Bill shares his thoughts after participating in force-on-force training with Sgr. Mrs. Sgt. Bill. Aaron Israel of Fundamental Defense Aaron Israel takes down the “Good Guy with a Gun mantra” with takeaways from the recent terror attack in London. Mia's Motivations with Mia Anstine Mia Anstine encourages you experienced hunters to mentor the next generation. Clinging to God and Guns Today we dissect the stoned ramblings of a YopuTuber called “5th Watcher” who thinks Jesus' command to buy a sword in Luke 22:36 is about being numbered with transgressors and says that if we think this verse justifies the ownership of guns then why not nuclear weapons? Prayer of the Week Almighty and everlasting God, who has given to us, Your servants, grace, by the confession of a truth faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity and in the power of the Divine Majesty to worship the Unity, we implore You that You would keep us steadfast in this faith and evermore defend us from all adversities; who lives and reigns, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. www.ArmedLutheran.us/alr-episode-74/ www.CooksHolsters.com
In this week's episode of Armed Lutheran Radio Lloyd and Pastor Bennett take on a "sermon" from a Methodist church in Phoenix that is basically a political speech disguised as a sermon. Filled with bad statistics, horrible exegesis, and the suggestion that peace can be achieved with pizza, pop and free parking...and gun control. Plus tips from Aaron, Sgt. Bill, and listener email from Ben in Pittsburgh. Ballistic Minute with Sergeant Bill Sgt. Bill shares a new tip for reloaders about two-way dies. Aaron Israel of Fundamental Defense Aaron Israel discusses the Manchester massacre. Clinging to God and Guns All we need is love. And free pizza. According to Rev. Jody Topping of Faith United Methodist Church in Phoenix, Arizona, if we just show love to others (by giving them free pizza and passing sensible gun control laws) we would have peace on Earth. Prayer of the Week O God our merciful Father, who taught the hearts of Your faithful people by sending to them the light of Your Holy Spirit, bring us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things and evermore to rejoice in His holy comfort; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who with You and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and forever. This week on Armed Lutheran Radio, Sgt. Bill is back! Aaron shares a lesson learned from a recent good-guy-with-a-gun incident in Texas, Mia reports from the Shoot Like a Girl trailer at NRAAM, and Pastor Bennett is out sick so Lloyd is flying solo on Clinging to God & Guns, taking apart an article that suggests that Jesus would have some choice words for the NRA. Ballistic Minute with Sergeant Bill Sgt. Bill is back from his win at the Silver Dollar to talk about the oft-heard phrase “Fast is fine, but accuracy is final.” Aaron Israel of Fundamental Defense Last week in a restaurant in Arlington, Texas a good guy with a gun stopped a badguy with a gun. Aaron shares his thoughts on this story. Mia's Motivations with Mia Anstine Mia is hanging out with Christie Crawford from Shoot Like a Girl at the NRA Annual Meetings. Clinging to God and Guns With Pastor Bennett out sick, Lloyd is going solo taking on an article from Red Letter Christians that completely misuses numerous Bible verses to suggest that Jesus would not be too happy with the NRA. Prayer of the Week Almighty and everlasting God, the heavenly Father who shows the light of truth to those who are in error so that they may return into the way of righteousness, cause all who are admitted into the fellowship of Christ's Church to avoid those things that are contrary to their profession and to follow all such things that are agreeable thereto; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. “Constitutional carry” is all the rage, with 13 states now allowing residents to carry a concealed firearm without a permit and as many as a dozen more considering similar measures. Ballistic Minute with Sergeant Bill Sgt. Bill is shooting the Silver Dollar IDPA Championship and will be back with us next week. Mia's Motivations with Mia Anstine Mia Anstine shares her thoughts on Campus Carry and Constitutional Carry from the perspective of a mom with a daughter heading to college soon. Clinging to God and Guns How should we as Christians view the subject of Constitutional Carry? Pastor John Bennett shares his thoughts. Prayer of the Week Merciful Father, who by the humiliation of Your Son raised up the fallen world, grant to Your faithful people perpetual gladness, and make those whom You have delivered from the danger of everlasting death to be partakers of eternal joys; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. It's been a craptastic couple of weeks for the gun banners. Two shootings in California — one in a school and a spree killing — should have served as grist for the gun control media mill. But once the facts became known, the narratives fell apart and nobody cared. Plus Mia is preparing for her trip to Atlanta for the NRA Annual Meetings, Sgt. Bill has a product review, Aaron has tips for trusting your gut, and Pastor Bennett responds to listener feedback. THIS EPISODE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY COOK'S HOLSTERS. AMERICAN MADE CUSTOM HOLSTERS WITH A 100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEE. www.CooksHolsters.com Ballistic Minute with Sergeant Bill Sgt. Bill reviews the Mantis X dry fire training tool. Is it revolutionary? Is it worth the price tag? Aaron Israel of Fundamental Defense Your intuition will tell you when to avoid danger. The trick is that you have to listen. Mia's Motivations with Mia Anstine Mia is looking forward to the NRA Annual Meetings in Atlanta next weekend. Clinging to God and Guns Pastor John Bennett responds to a nasty bit of feedback that tries to paint Jesus as the world's biggest liberal. Prayer of the Week Almighty and merciful God, as You have brought us to celebrate the festival of the Lord's resurrection, cause us by Your grace to bring forth the fruits thereof in our life and conduct; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Two events in the final week of the life of Christ are most often used on either side of the gun debate. Jesus tells his disciples in the Upper Room to sell their cloaks and buy swords, and later tells Simon Peter that all who take up the sword will perish by the sword. What's the proper context of these verses and what should we be focusing on as we read through these passages during the Holy Week of Easter? Pastor Evan Goeglein of Faith Lutheran Church in Rogue River, Oregon joins us again to discuss it. Plus tips from Sgt. Bill, Aaron Israel of Fundamental Defense, and Mia Anstine. Mia's Motivations with Mia Anstine - Mia shares her thoughts as a mother, as an instructor, about the tragic death of 13-year-old Malachi Hemphill in Philadelphia. Ballistic Minute with Sergeant Bill - Sgt. Bill talks about what you need to be ready to shoot your first IDPA match. Aaron Israel of Fundamental Defense - Aaron Israel shares his thoughts on the fallibility of memory immediately after a dynamic critical incident. Special Guest: Pr. Evan Goeglein - Pastor Evan Goeglein of Table Talk Radio joins us again to discuss two of the most commonly (mis)used passages from the Bible from Luke 22 and Matthew 26. Both events took place during the original Holy Week preceeding Christ's passion and Crucifixion and both are used on opposite sides of the gun rights debate. Prayer of the Week O almighty and eternal God, who through the death of Your Son has destroyed sin and death, and by his rising to life again restored innocence and everlasting life, that being delivered from the power of the devil, I might live under You in Your kingdom, grant that I may be forever comforted by true faith in the resurrection of Your dear Son. While I live, guide me with Your holy counsel, and when I die, give me the crown of life, that with all the holy angels and the elect I may praise and glorify You, world without end. This week on Armed Lutheran Radio Lloyd and Pastor Bennett dissect a sermon from 2012 by a Presbyterian pastor who based her sermon title on a bogus quote from Saint Augustine of Hippo and suggests that we are all sinners if we don't vote for politicians who support gun control. Aaron Israel responds to an question from a member of the Reformation Gun Club, and Sgt. Bill talks about preparing for a sanctioned IDPA match. Ballistic Minute with Sergeant Bill As Sgt. Bill heads to the Razorback Shootout in Perryville, Arkansas this weekend, he shares his thoughts on how to prepare for a major IDPA match. Aaron Israel of Fundamental Defense Reformation Gun Club member Dave Hegenauer asks about training when there's nowhere nearby to train. Clinging to God and Guns “Hope has two beautiful daughters. Their names are courage and anger; anger at the way things are, and courage to see that they do not remain the way they are.” That bogus quote is widely attributed to Saint Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD) and served as the inspiration for a sermon by a Presbyterian pastor in the wake of the Newtown school shooting in 2012. Funny thing is, though, try as we might, we could not find any evidence that Augustine ever said such a thing. And how does hope give birth to anger? Prayer of the Week Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who sent Your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon Him our flesh and to suffer death upon the cross that all mankind should follow the example of His great humility, mercifully grant that we may both be guided by His patience in this life and also be made partakers of His resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. When we make the decision to carry a firearm or to purchase a firearm for home defense, there are a certain set of scenarios that we all envision and prepare for. How many of us prepare to intervene in a violent assault on a stranger? How many of us prepare for that scenario when our loved ones are with us? Aaron Kreag decided to save a woman who was being violently assaulted in 2014 but nothing prepared him for what he faced -- a non-compliant perpetrator, aggressive and poorly trained cops, constant trial delays, invasive media, potential employers who wanted nothing to do with him, and a victim who ultimately turned on him in court. If you carry a gun, you need to hear this interview. Plus tips from Sgt. Bill, Aaron Israel and Mia Anstine. Ballistic Minute with Sergeant Bill - Looking to shake up your dry-fire routine? Sgt. Bill shares ideas for ways to make your dry for more fun and more challenging. Aaron Israel of Fundamental Defense - Aaron Israel uses a terrible accident involving two 3-year-old Texas boys to teach an important lesson about how to safely stage firearms in your vehicle. Mia's Motivations with Mia Anstine - Every year the TSA stops hundreds of travelers every year who attempt to sneak firearms past security in America's airports. Several have recently made it through. What would you do if this happened to you? Special Guest: Aaron Kreag - In 2014 Aaron Kreag was on the way to the movies with his wife when he drove up on a violent assault and made the decision to intervene. He joins us to talk about that event and the aftermath. Nothing about that experience was what he expected and he shares the lessons he learned and how it changed his view of defending others. Prayer of the Week - We implore You, almighty God, merciful Father, look upon Your people that by Your great goodness they may be governed and preserved evermore in body and soul; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. www.ArmedLutheran.us/alr-episode-64/ www.CooksHolsters.com

Plus a lesson on the Eighth Commandment, tips from Sgt. Bill, Mia Anstine, and Aaron Israel. Mia's Motivations - Mia Anstine shares tips for travelling safely. Clinging to God & Guns - This week Lloyd and Pastor Bennett dissect our first video. This South African Christian pacifist suggests that true followers of Jesus do not take up weapons for any reason. There is no justification for harming another person, he says. If you dare to defend yourself, Jesus will not protect you. Prayer for the Week - O God, our heavenly Father, seeing that of ourselves we have no strength, keep us both outwardly and inwardly that we may be defended from all adversities that may happen to the body and from all evil thoughts that may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

This week on Armed Lutheran Radio we take a look at maybe the goofiest interpretation of Scripture to date. A California Quaker who suggests that Christ's call for His disciples to buy swords in Luke 22 was so that he could fulfill the prophesy to be numbered with the lawless because, we all know what lawless do. They carry swords! Plus tips for Mia, Aaron, and Sgt. Bill. Ballistic Minute with Sergeant Bill Dummy rounds are a useful addition to your dry-fire practice gear. There are lots of different styles and options to choose from. Sgt. Bill breaks down the pros and cons and shares his favorites. Aaron Israel of Fundamental Defense Establishing rally points will help you coordinate with family members during a critical incident, should you get separated and technology fails. Mia's Motivations with Mia Anstine Mia expands on Aaron's vehicle preparedness tip from Episode 57 with a story of her own about why you should not only have tools in your vehicle, but know how to use them. And the importance of teaching your family as well. Clinging to God and Guns Quakers are inherently pacifists, so you kind of know what you're going to get when they write about guns. But this interpretation of Luke 22 may be the goofiest we've ever seen. Prayer of the Week O God, because You know that we dare not put our trust in anything that we do, mercifully grant that by Your power we may be defended against all adversity; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Mia's Motivations - As promised, Mia is sharing info about gear she saw at SHOT Show. This week it's everything you need to know about suppressors. Fundamentals of Defense - Aaron Israel departs from the firearms instructor role to suggest that a more important threat to your future is financial issues. Being prepared for them is as important as training for the gunfight you are far less likely to be involved in. Ballistic Minute - Since the groundhog has predicted six more weeks of winter, Sgt. Bill joins me, Aaron, and the Pastor for a round-table to discuss the aftermath, the politics, gun control, and things we can do that would actually make a difference.
This week on Armed Lutheran Radio, hard earned lessons from the range, plus Sgt. Bill's tips on methods of concealed carry, Aaron Israel's tips on preparing for medical emergencies, and Pastor Bryan Wolfmueller joins us to talk about how the Ten Commandments calls us to action in service to our neighbors. www.ArmedLutheranRadio.com
It's feast or famine at Armed Lutheran Radio! For our 20th episode, all our contributors are back and the show is chocked full of goodness. Sgt. Bill talks about passing on your passion for shooting in this week's Ballistic Minute, Aaron Israel of Fundamental Defense joins us to talk about his trip to the NRA Annual Meetings in Louisville, Kentucky, and Pastor John Bennett is here to fisk an article from a retired ELCA pastor which suggests that "strong" Christians must set a good example for "weak" Christians and eschew the ownership of guns, because owning a gun is like pagan worship and you might give people the impression that owning a gun is okay. But it's not. Or something. It's a bizarre "re-contextualization" of Paul's letter to the church at Corinth and we unravel the whole thing in Clinging to God and Guns.
We are winging it this week on Armed Lutheran Radio. All our plans fell apart. Aaron Israel is in Louisville for the NRA Annual Meetings, Pastor John Bennett is taking care of some family matters, and Sgt. Bill and I are left holding down the fort. Sarge has tips for shooting faster in this week's Ballistic Minute. We talk about the Target stores controversy, and a story by Kevin Williamson at National Review about why criminals are so darn difficult to stop, especially when our politicians insist on policies that target the law abiding, and not the criminals.
In this week's episode of Armed Lutheran Radio, we're back from the Texas State IDPA match with tips from Sergeant Bill on practicing what you're not good at, Aaron Israel of Fundamental Defense joins me to discuss the importance of seeking professional training, and Pastor John Bennett of St. John's Lutheran Church in Willow Creek, Minnesota is back for Clinging to God and Guns as we take on another bit of bad theology (and logic) from evangelical minister Rev. Rob Schenck.
In this week's episode we are excited to be joined by the co-host of Table Talk Radio, Pastor Bryan Wolfmueller of Hope Lutheran Church in Aurora, Colorado, to talk about the Doctrine of the Three Estates and how it can help us better understand the natural right of self-defense. Sergeant Bill talks about pre-stage planning, Aaron Israel of Fundamental Defense shares some lessons from a tragic shooting outside a Texas Walgreens, and defending Armed Lutheran Gun Trivia Quiz Champion Jon Braaten brings us a gun review.
On this week's episode, we're back from our third IDPA match in four weeks to bring you a look inside the range bag of Sgt. Bill, tips on how to avoid disappointing gun and gear purchases from Aaron Israel of Fundamental Defense, and Rev. Kenn Blanchard, the Black Man with a Gun, joins us to talk about podcasting, gun violence and race, and his newest project: GunMovement.ORG.
On this week's episode we look back at the MVSA Regional IDPA Championship, Sergeant Bill Silvia has tips on trigger control, Aaron Israel shares a personal defense tip about practicing off-balance shooting, and Pastor John Bennett and I take a look at some misguided Christian anti-gunners who think the Old Testament prophets call us to beat our guns into garden tools for the poor.
In this week's episode, tips on organizing your get-home bag or first-aid kit, a range review of the CZ 2075 RAMI, Sergeant Bill has some tips on how to shoot transitions, Aaron Israel with tips on getting the most out of your limited training time, and our contestants return to break the tie from last week's Great Armed Lutheran Gun Quiz.
This week’s episode is jam packed. We welcome our newest contributor, firearms instructor Aaron Israel. Sergeant Bill has tips on getting the most out of your dry fire practice. Two contestants square off in the very first Armed Lutheran Gun Quiz. Pastor Bennett is back for another installment of Clinging to God and Guns. And we have a special musical number created just for the show.
