Tune in for Part 2 of our Holiday Bonus - our two favorite episodes of this past year!Unlocking $4.9 BILLION Dollars in Military Travel to the Vacation Rental Industry, with Anthony GanttAnthony Gantt, entrepreneur and recently retired Officer for the United States Marine Corps after 22 years, joins us today to tell a tale of what it truly means to build a purpose-built startup. During his service, Anthony was relocated from Virginia to Texas, charged with orders to find accommodations for his family which included his wife plus their 6 children. A standard hotel room (or multiple) was not an option - so Anthony booked a rental on Airbnb. Little did he know, the Government did NOT allow this - military personnel could be compensated for hotel stays, but compensation did not allow for bookings made on these "new OTAs" (which includes Vrbo and all the other vacation rental based channels.) He was not reimbursed for the necessary accommodations to relocate, and soon found out this was happening all across the globe - military families had NO ability to be reimbursed for vacation rentals or short term rentals as a form of relocation OR vacation - a standard practice when a traditional hotel is utilized. Anthony now embarks on a new career path as CEO/Founder of At Ease, that will take him into a totally different battle zone: working through the challenges of outdated laws and complexities of OTA / vacation rental technology. If his mission is successful, he will unlock a $4.9 BILLION dollar travel opportunity for vacation rental managers and short term rental hosts alike. Anthony Gantt is a retired Marine and Founder of atease. After experiencing complications with short-term rental stays during his many relocations in the military, Anthony identified a common problem with short-term rentals: they were often not compliant with the government's high standards (the way hotels and motels were), and so the employees staying in them weren't eligible for travel and lodging reimbursement. atease (at ease) is the new game in town that is helping hosts diversify their listing opportunities and earn more income by serving military and government personnel. atease helps to ensure that your property is in line with government standards, opening up your bookings to the constantly moving military and government employees. This means less vacancies year-round, regardless of seasonal travel or pending recessions. “Book writing is very entrepreneurial and I believe more people have books inside of them, especially veterans.” Rob Campbell Regardless of the context and nature of change, to have persistent optimism when facing change is not very easy. [2:50] The military is a great place to shock your potential because they throw you into scenarios and training and of course combats that are shocking. [3:40] It was a tremendous career growth for me which placed me in places I would not have thrust myself and so it did me wonders. [3:57] Everything was a team effort and so our experience doing that over 27 years and 16 moves, I believe served us well. [5:27] My children and my wife heard me talk about leadership and how it was all about the organization and not about me. [5:56] It is tough for the spouses and they serve just as much as veterans and I believe in them so much because they are leaders in their own right. [6:09] They learned a lot of the same values that are infused in me and bring the same kind of things into their own core life. [6:34] Veterans are well equipped to be entrepreneurs and we're just not doing a very good job in military transition of exposing them to that and convincing them that they are. [7:30] The military rule really helped hone many skills for me, which I think are very critical for running successful business. [7:58] There are some obstacles to overcome but we can adapt quickly and so that's how it really helped me to be able to step in and be an entrepreneur. [8:06] Commercial break. [9:51] Book writing is very entrepreneurial and I believe more people have books inside of them, especially veterans. [11:43] I coach a lot of folks to try and take that leap and get into book writing, because that wasn't my grand plan but I have managed to write two books with a third on the way. [11:50] When I got out, I didn't know what I wanted to do and that's what a lot of veterans experience. [12:07] In 2016, I had my blank sheet of paper, and I decided to take some time off and I kind of stumbled into book writing and I started my entrepreneurship journey there. [12:37] I also the Executive Director for a non-profit, which is a live virtual entrepreneurship program that is taught by entrepreneurs who have decades of experience in business. [13:07] Part of the problem with a lot of these entrepreneurs programs out there on the veteran side is they're taught by veterans, not entrepreneurs. [13:19] We get an audience from across the world and they realize they still need to be schooled up on how to go through the entrepreneurial journey. So that's been a great journey. [13:33] I do a wide variety of things which include consulting, teaching, coaching and speaking and coaching and speaking of the two things that I love to do most. [14:08] What I do in those roles across the board is shining a light on something that an individual cannot see. [14:25] The most ROI for me, is when the light bulb comes on and somebody sees that they have the potential to do something. [14:54] You need a coach to be able to pull that out and kind of bring you up to that next level, even at the ripe old age. [15:09] A lot of veterans get out and they don't know what they want to do and that's what my second book is all about. [15:53] The title of the book is called At Ease, which is a term when said calmly means that it's going to be okay and that's what I was trying to say in the book. [16:11] There's this weird sense of we don't have that complete freedom because we were always beholden to the bigger institution of the military and we had to seek that approval. [17:04] That is the struggle that I address in the book and share that you're at ease and that transitioning is a journey that you're traveling. [17:30 One of the things that I discovered after the book was out last year, it speaks not only to veterans, but anybody making a major transition in life. [20:43] One of the chapters in the book is about Be careful not to drop an anchor and what I mean by that is veterans and anybody making a big transition need to remain flexible. [21:17] Many veterans are starting to question their service specifically to Afghanistan but reflecting back on those things that we provided for them, we all did the very best we could. [25:50] I believe many of us are a shining example of service and sacrifice and will remain so especially the fallen. [27:12] When you thank a veteran, you're still doing the right thing and it means a lot and so they need that and a friend going forward. [27:25] We are at a really important time in our country and we as veterans and non-veterans can really come together, form of friendship and get to know each other better. [27:33] ……………………………………. Major Anthony Gantt, founder and CEO of At Ease quickly realized that PCSing a large family and attempting to stay in a hotel for 10-30 days is not ideal. Many military families go through a personal change of station (PCS) at least once in their career. Each experience is different, but almost every single one discusses the challenges being in a hotel room with your family for extended periods of time. During one PCS, Major Gantt, put his family into an air B n B that had a full kitchen and rooms for his family, only to find out that he would not be reimbursed for his stay there because it was not approved. So, he took matters into his own hands and created PCS At Ease with approved listings to PCS, Leave, TDY, and other government travel - for service members to choose from. In this episode of Vacation and Short-Term Rental Titans, Leo Walton (co-founder of SUPERHOG) has the pleasure of talking to Mateo Bradford, Strategic partnership and business development advisor at At Ease. Founded in 2018 and based in Texas, At Ease is a JTR-compliant booking-engine that makes it possible for federal employees and active-duty military to find affordable short-term rentals for PCS moves and temporary duty travel. At Ease - https://pcsatease.com/ (JTR-compliant booking-engine) SUPERHOG - https://superhog.com/ (Digital guest check-in platform) GUARDHOG - https://guardhog.com/ (Airbnb and other short-let insurance)
Anthony Gantt and the birth of At Ease Rentals: Anthony is a smart Marine Corps officer who saw an opportunity and jumped on it. He was changing duty stations (in military terms, “PCS” or permanent change of station) and when he turned in his reimbursement request, it was denied. Why? He had stayed in an Airbnb instead of a hotel. Anthony had made several PCSs before and never had a reimbursement be denied, and this really burned him up. So he began the process of getting the rules changed. We hope you will find this interview along with interviews with Kevin Rhea and CL Reed to be educational. He began the paperbound process of changing government regulations and had a breakthrough. After a surprising meeting with some government travel officials, he notified the military that he was going to work on a platform that would be an OTA (online travel agency, like Airbnb) for the military. This platform would be one that meets all the various rules for military and civilian government travel. It would allow federal travelers to stay in short term rentals if they so choose. And the other side of the platform works by inviting vacation rental managers and individual STR hosts to list on the platform. The result is his platform At Ease Rentals. Debi asked him about new hosts on his platform, and about safe travel. Anthony says that bookings are difficult for travelers of color. Hosts would often reply that the dates were not available. Frustrating. And looking out of place in a given neighborhood, for example. But of all the cities he’s traveled to, he finds Orlando to be the model for a good vacation rental experience. He feels that it’s not so much about safe travel as just having to deal with prejudicial bias. Debi asked if Anthony knows about Airbnb’s changes such as not showing the picture until the reservation is made. She also made the point that it seems like no other OTAs besides Airbnb seem to address the issues of discrimination and bias, and while Airbnb hasn’t cracked the code altogether, they at least make earnest attempts to solve the problem. Anthony spoke about his four daughters, teaching them to be proud and that the only thing that can bring us down is divisiveness. Anthony made the point that diversity just adds higher returns on the investments. From his standpoint, Anthony sees us as Americans first, like I’m American, African descent. American, Italian descent etc. He doesn’t really like the term like Black American. American first. What can I do to be a contributing member of society? We need to be the beacon and the role model for the rest of the world. Debi asked, how can we make guests feel more comfortable? Anthony's response: You can’t fix stupid. If I told you no green eyed person could stay in this house on the lake, you’d be upset. It’s like that. Everyone wants the same thing and be able to book a place without worrying about anything. Debi brought up Krhea’s comment that it’s weird when people say they “don’t see color”. Anthony said it would be like “I don’t see women. I see everyone as a man”. We just want to go to a booking platform and book. Debi mentioned her picture on her listing websites that says “all are welcome here, no matter your…..” Anthony recommends to look at stock photo site PEXEL. Stock photos of everyone. His point is, use these pix of diverse people with your listing, which is a GREAT idea. Anthony just got goosebumps. Wanting to reach different travelers, he went to groups on Instagram - black people travel a lot. Anthony talks about spouses of military being 95% women; he looked at their Pinterest and came to a realization of how to market: PINTERIST! Anthony talks about how hard he’s working on the company, and said he’s acting like it's one of the 20 hour deployments he knew of from previous military assignments, to work on At Ease while he's a full time marine. Deb asked about the meaning of “walking when black”. His answer was that you have different concerns depending on the situation, like if you're in a mall, high end store, there are eyes that automatically come to you about shoplifting. Traveling while black, you can’t wear sweatshirt and hoodie, and at work while black, is it ok to let hair naturally grow out or is is non professional or not serious. He went to a golf thing, one of the guys had an NBA mask, but none of them are basketball athletes, one of the ladies asked if they were from the NBA, even though most were not exactly athletic anymore... Talking to his kids: Anthony tells them to be aware of what's going on. If it’s negative, figure out how to get out of the situation. The one thing that can protect you is education. You have to be aware of the situations you’re in. Strive to be an American first, who happens to look like that. LINKS: https://www.facebook.com/ATEASERentals/ At Ease Rentals
After serving the nation and sacrificing for the country, a high rate of veterans are homeless in the United States. One reason: they didn’t have adequate investments to fall back on, or they didn’t know how to invest. #PrayforthePresident Ken Thornberg Freedom Encounters Founder discusses the serious attacks against our country and against the President. Last night revolutionary forces gathered in LaFayette Park across from the White House. The Presidents of Iran, China and Turkey gathered to discuss the over throw of President Trump. The incessant Media attacks and leaks from within the swamp in attempts to discredit the President and lie about him. He needs or prayers: “Father God, I ask that your angelic host will encompass the president of the United States, Donald Trump, 24/7, with supernatural protection. I request the same for the staff which he has appointed to all positions within his cabinet and the judges he has chosen. I ask that they all receive supernatural protection and wisdom from You as they move forward in their calls, along with the courage to fulfill it in the face of massive Satanic opposition. Please give our president and his staff heavenly wisdom in choosing future godly individuals to fill important positions as our nation moves out of this pandemic plight to a place of strength and leadership once again. I ask for favor from on high that drifts down to earth with the courts, the American voters, and with those who desire righteousness, rule of law, and a nation built upon the principles on which it was founded. I ask, Father, that You would give the president Your grace to help remove the Babylonian spirit from this nation and replace it with the moral character and resolve that You founded this nation with. Thank you, Father, that you gave us a Cyrus who has blessed us with opposition to the murder of unborn children and leaders, has supported the law of the republic, and has had the fortitude and endurance to withstand the weaponry that Satan and his followers have been sending against him 24/7. Continue, Father, to show him Your bigger picture for the future of this nation and its people who desire truth and godly character. Help him, Lord, encourage right behavior among the populace and draw the voters’ eyes, ears and minds to places where truth is shared rather than from those in the press, media, and Internet who desire the collapse of our culture, family structure, and rule of law. Grant favor to president Trump, Lord, and the stamina needed—physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually—for this journey. I ask the same for his wife Melania, and all of their children. Father, I pray that any fear of man will be devoid from them in any shape or form as they live out their lives in what you have called each one of them to do. I pray to destroy all original, backup and replacement curses, spells, programs and words spoken and cast against president Trump, his family, his Cabinet, and his entire staff, by the power of the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth who came in the flesh and I send them all to the abyss. Father, please shower your greatest blessing upon our president, his family, his Cabinet, and staff as they lead this nation back to greatness and honor of You. Restore their strength, clarity of mind, decisions, and truth to Yours and grant them favor with the American people who will be voting this fall. I ask, Father, that you would keep haters of love and righteousness home from the polls and that you would send angelic help to get followers of Christ and lovers of truth to the polls in their place. I declare that Your will shall be accomplished, Father, and I also ask for the personal courage to speak up for truth, even in the face of opposition. Help me also, Lord, to overcome the fear of man and seek only the reverential fear of the Lord. Message Title: Attention, At Ease
In this episode, I have the honors of speaking with Anthony Gantt and Greg Rollins. Anthony is based on Texas and an active duty marine who founded At Ease, a booking site for the military, and Greg Rollins, located in California and a marine veteran who founded Righteous Rentals, a property management company for At Ease. They have 19 properties across 3 states. Greg got into short term rentals while he was still on active duty and ran his properties while he was deployed in Japan. Shortly after he got out of the Marine Corps, he met Anthony, and when they got on their first phone call, they knew they had to team up. In this episode, Anthony and Greg talk about how they went from 2 to 19 properties in 7 months just through word of mouth. Also, they share how they take their experience military experience to come up with creative ways to build their company and help military people invest and make money passively through short term rentals.
At Ease or Dis - Ease? It's Your Choice. As I recorded this episode, there is a lot of craziness going on in the world out there. The big question however, is are you making a conscious choice to participate in it? Guess what? You get to choose YOUR OWN thoughts. You get to decide what actions you will take that serve you best. In today's episode I remind my listeners of a few Truths. First of all last time I checked there was only One Presence and One Power. And yes, you get to call IT whatever you want. The keyword here is One. Not Source and something else. What are you giving your power and energy too? What is driving you? Fear or Faith? The bottom line is Law is Law. Natural, Spiritual and Universal Law is fact and not a theory or opinion. The key here is whatever you think about you bring about. Whatever thought you hold dominant, and bind with feeling and emotion, YOU WILL ATTRACT to you. Law. So listen in to today's episode and make the choice to change the channel. Turn the dial in your mind to thoughts of what you do want to experience. Take your thoughts off of what you don't want to experience. Worry, doubt and fear are feelings and emotions that will pass through you, let them, then focus on only your Good. You are already perfect, whole, healthy and complete! Todays episode is on one of the topics I am probably the most intimate with that we'll cover: the evolution of the Apple servers and then the rapid pivot towards a much more mobility-focused offering. Early Macs in 1984 shipped with AppleTalk. These could act as a server or workstation. But after a few years, engineers realized that Apple needed a dedicated server platform. Apple has had a server product starting in 1987 that lives on to today. At Ease had some file and print sharing options. But the old AppleShare (later called AppleShare IP server was primarily used to provide network resources to the Mac from 1986 to 2000, with file sharing being the main service offered. There were basically two options. At Ease, which ran on the early Mac operating systems and A/UX, or Apple Unix. This brought paged memory management and could run on the Macintosh II through the Centris Macs. Apple Unix shipped from 1988 to 1995 and had been based on System V. It was a solidly performing TCP/IP machine and introduced the world of POSIX. Apple Unix could emulate Mac apps and once you were under the hood, you could do pretty much anything you might do in another Unix environment. Apple also took a stab at early server hardware in the form of the Apple Network Server, which was announced in 1995 when Apple Unix went away, for the Quadra 950 and a PowerPC server sold from 1996 to 1997, although the name was used all the way until 2003. While these things were much more powerful and came with modern hardware, they didn't run the Mac OS but ran another Unix type of operating system, AIX, which had begun life at about the same time as Apple Unix and was another System V variant, but had much more work done and given financial issues at Apple and the Taligent relationship between Apple and IBM to build a successor to Mac OS and OS/2, it made sense to work together on the project. Meanwhile, At Ease continued to evolve and Apple eventually shipped a new offering in the form of AppleShare IP, which worked up until 9.2.2. In an era before, as an example, you needed to require SMTP authentication, AppleShare IP was easily used for everything from file sharing services to mail services. An older Quadra made for a great mail server so your company could stop paying an ISP for some weird email address like that AOL address you got in college, and get your own domain in 1999! And if you needed more, you could easily slap some third party software on the hosts, like if you actually wanted SMTP authentication so your server didn't get used to route this weird thing called spam, you could install Communigator or later Communigate Pro. Keep in mind that many of the engineers from NeXT after Steve Jobs left Apple had remained friends with engineers from Apple. Some still actually work at Apple. Serving services was a central need for NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP systems. The UNIX underpinnings made it possible to compile a number of open source software packages and the first web server was hosted by Tim Berners Lee on a NeXTcube. During the transition over to Apple, AppleShare IP and services from NeXT were made to look and feel similarly and turned into Rhapsody from around 1999 and then Mac OS X Server from around 2000. The first few releases of Mac OS X Server, represented a learning curve for many classic Apple admins, and in fact caused a generational shift in who administered the systems. John Welch wrote books in 2000 and 2002 that helped administrators get up to speed. The Xserve was released in 2002 and the Xserve RAID was released in 2003. It took time, but a community began to form around these products. The Xserve would go from a G3 to a G4. The late Michael Bartosh compiled a seminal work in “Essential Mac OS X Panther Server Administration” for O'Reilly Media in 2005. I released my first book called The Mac Tiger Server Black Book in 2006. The server was enjoying a huge upswing in use. Schoun Regan and Kevin White wrote a Visual QuickStart for Panther Server. Schoun wrote one for Tiger Server. The platform was growing. People were interested. Small businesses, schools, universities, art departments in bigger companies. The Xserve would go from a G4 to an Intel processor and we would get cluster nodes to offload processing power from more expensive servers. Up until this point, Apple never publicly acknowledged that businesses or enterprises used their device so the rise of the Xserve advertising was the first time we saw that acknowledgement. Apple continued to improve the product with new services up until 2009 with Mac OS X Server 10.6. At this point, Apple included most services necessary for running a standard IT department for small and medium sized business in the product, including web (in the form of Apache), mail, groupware, DHCP, DNS, directory services, file sharing, and even web and wiki services. There were also edge case services such as Podcast Producer for automating video and content workflows, Xsan, a clustered file system, and in 2009 even purchased a company called Artbox, whose product was rebranded as Final Cut Server. Apple now had multiple awesome, stable products. Dozens of books and websites were helping built a community and growing knowledge of the platform. But that was a turning point. Around that same time Apple had been working towards the iPad, released in 2010 (although arguably the Knowledge Navigator was the first iteration, conceptualized in 1987). The skyrocketing sales of the iPhone led to some tough decisions. Apple no longer needed to control the whole ecosystem with their server product and instead began transitioning as many teams as possible to work on higher profit margin areas, reducing focus on areas that took attention away from valuable software developers who were trying to solve problems many other vendors had already solved better. In 2009 the Xserve RAID was discontinued and the Xserve went away the following year. By then, the Xserve RAID was lagging and for the use cases it served, there were other vendors whose sole focus was storage - and who Apple actively helped point customers towards. Namely the Promise array for Xsan. A few things that were happening around the same time. Apple could have bought Sun for less than 10% of their CASH reserves in 2010 but instead allowed Oracle to buy the tech giant. Instead, Apple released the iPad. Solid move. They also released the Mac Mini server, which while it lacked rack and stack options like an ipmi interface to remotely reboot the server and dual power supplies, was actually more powerful. The next few years saw services slowly pealed off the server. Today, the Mac OS X Server product has been migrated to just an app on the App Store. Today, macOS Server is meant to run Profile Manager and be run as a metadata controller for Xsan, Apple's clustered file system. Products that used to compete with the platform are now embraced by most in the community. For the most part, this is because Apple let Microsoft or Linux-based systems own the market for providing features that are often unique to each enterprise and not about delighting end users. Today building server products that try to do everything for everyone seems like a distant memory for many at Apple. But there is still a keen eye towards making the lives of the humans that use Apple devices better, as has been the case since Steve Jobs mainstreamed the GUI and Apple made the great user experience advocate Larry Tesler their Chief Scientist. How services make a better experience for end users can be seen by the Caching service built into macOS (moved there from macOS Server) and how some products, such as Apple Remote Desktop, are still very much alive and kicking. But the focus on profile management and the desire to open up everything Profile Manager can do to third party developers who serve often niche markets or look more to scalability is certainly front and center. I think this story of the Apple Server offering is really much more about Apple branching into awesome areas that they needed to be at various points in time. Then having a constant focus on iterating to a better, newer offering. Growing with the market. Helping the market get to where they needed them to be. Serving the market and then when the needs of the market can be better served elsewhere, pulling back so other vendors could serve the market. Not looking to grow a billion dollar business unit in servers - but instead looking to provide them just until they didn't need to. In many ways Apple paved the way for billion dollar businesses to host services. And the SaaS ecosystem is as vibrant for the Apple platform as ever. My perspective on this has changed a lot over the years. As someone who wrote a lot of books about the topic I might have been harsh at times. But that's one great reason not to be judgmental. You don't always know the full picture and it's super-easy to miss big strategies like that when you're in the middle of it. So thank you to Apple for putting user experience into servers as with everything you do. And thank you listeners for tuning into this episode of the History of Computing Podcast. We're certainly lucky to have you and hope you join us next time!

Welcome to the History of Computing Podcast, where we explore the history of information technology. Because by understanding the past, we're better prepared for the innovations of the future! Today we're going to talk about Apple's Mobile Device Management; what we now call Mobility. To kick things off we'll take you back to the year 2001. 2001 was the year Nickelback released How You Remind Me. Destiny's Child was still together. Dave Matthews released The Space Between, and the first real Mobile Device Management was born. The first real mobile management solution to gain traction was SOTI, which launched in 2001 with an eye towards leveraging automation using mobile devices and got into device management when those options started to emerge. More and more IT departments wanted “Over The Air” management, or OTA management. So Airwatch, founded by John Marshall in 2003 as Wandering Wi-Fi, was the first truly multi-platform device management solution. This time, rather than try to work within the confines of corporate dogma surrounding how the business of IT was done, Apple would start to go their own way. This was made possible by the increasing dominance of the iPhone accessing Exchange servers and the fact that suddenly employees were showing up with these things and using them at work. Suddenly, companies needed to manage the OS that ships on iPhone, iOS. The original iPhone was released in 2007 and iOS management initially occurred manually through iTunes. You could drag an app onto a device and the app would be sent to the phone over the USB cable, and some settings were exposed to iTunes. Back then you had to register an iOS device with Apple by plugging it into iTunes in order to use it. You could also backup and restore a device using iTunes, which came with some specific challenges, such as the account you used to buy an app would follow the “image” to the new device. Additionally, if the backup was encrypted or not determined what was stored in the backup and some information might have to be re-entered. This led to profiles. Profiles were created using a tool called the iPhone Configuration Utility, released in 2008. A Profile is a small xml file that applies a given configuration onto an iOS device. This was necessary because developers wanted to control what could be done on iOS devices. One of those configurations was the ability to install an app over the air that was hosted on an organization's own web server, provided the .ipa mime type on the web server was defined. This basically mirrored what the App Store was doing and paved the way for internal app stores and profiles that were hosted on servers, both of which could be installed using in-house app stores. During that same time-frame, Jamf, Afaria (by SAP), and MobileIron, founded by Ajay Mishra and Suresh Batchu, in the previous year, were also building similar OTA profile delivery techniques leveraging the original MDM spec. At this point, most OTA management tasks (such as issuing a remote wipe or disabling basic features of devices) were done using Exchange ActiveSync (EAS). You could control basic password policies as well as some rudimentary devices settings such as disabling the camera. With this in mind, Apple began to write the initial MDM specifications, paving the way for an entire IT industry segment to be born. This was the landscape when the first edition of the Enterprise iPhone and iPad Administrator's Guide was released by Apress in 2010. Additional MDM solutions were soon to follow. TARMAC released MDM for iOS devices using a server running on a Mac in late 2011. AppBlade and Excitor was also released in 2011. Over the course of the next 8 years, MDM became one part of a number of other lovely acronyms: • Mobile Content Management, or MCM, is really just a Content Management System that sends content and services to mobile devices. • Mobile Identity Management, or MIM, refers to where the SIM card of one's mobile phone works as an identity • Enterprise Mobility Management, or EMM, gets more into managing apps and content that gets put on devices • Unified Endpoint Management, or UEM, brings traditional laptops and then desktops into the management feature, merging EMM with traditional device management. X-Men First Class came in 2011, although the mail server by the same name was all but gone by then. This was a pivotal year for Apple device management and iOS in the enterprise, as Blackberry announced that you would be able to manage Apple devices with their Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES), which had been created in 1999 to manage Blackberry devices. This legitimized using Apple's mobile devices in enterprise environments and also an opportunistic play for licensing due to the fact that the devices were becoming such a mainstay in the enterprise and a shift towards UEM that would continue until 2018, when BlackBerry Enterprise Server was renamed to BlackBerry Unified Endpoint Manager. An explosion of MDM providers has occurred since Blackberry added Apple to their platform, to keep up with the demand of the market. Filewave and LANrev added MDM to their products in 2011 with new iOS vendors NotifyMDM and SOTI entering into the Apple Device Management family. Then Amtel MDM, AppTrack, Codeproof, Kony, ManageEngine (a part of Zoho corporation), OurPact, Parallels, PUSHMANAGER, ProMDM, SimpleMDM, Sophos Mobile Control, and Tangoe MDM were released in 2012. MaaS360 was acquired by IBM in 2013, the same year auralis, CREA MDM, FancyFon Mobility Center (FAMOC), Hexnode, Lightspeed, and Relution were released, and when Endpoint Protector added MDM to their security products. Citrix also acquired Zenprise in 2013 to introduce XenMobile. Jamf Now (originally called Bushel), Miradore, Mosyle, and ZuluDesk (acquired by Jamf in 2018 and being rebranded to Jamf School) were released in 2014, which also saw VMware acquired Airwatch for $1.54 billion dollars and Good Technology acquire BoxTone, beefing up their Apple device management capabilities. 2014 also saw Microsoft extend Intune to manage iOS devices. Things quieted down a bit but in 2016 after Apple started publishing the MDM specifications guide freely, an open source MDM called MicroMDM was initially committed to github, making it easier for organizations to build their own fork or implement that should they choose. Others crept on the scene as well during those year, such as Absolute Manage MDM, AppTech 360, Avalanche Mobility Center, Baramundi, Circle by Disney, Cisco Meraki (by way of the Cisco acquisition of Meraki), Kaseya EMM, SureMDM, Trend Micro Mobile Security, and many others. Each one of these tools has a great place in the space. Some focus on specific horizontal or vertical markets, while others focus on integrating with other products in a company's portfolio. With such a wide field of MDM solutions, Apple has been able to focus efforts on building a great API and not spend a ton of time on building out many of the specific features needed for every possible market. A number of family or residential MDM providers have also sprung up, including Circle by Disney. The one market Apple has not made MDM available to has been the home. Apple has a number of tools they believe help families manage devices. It's been touted as a violation of user privacy to deploy MDM for home environments and in fact is a violation of the APNs terms of service. Whether we believe this to be valid or not, OurPact, initially launched in 2012, was shut down in 2019 along with a number of other screen time apps for leveraging MDM to control various functions of iOS devices. The MDM spec has evolved over the years. iOS 4 in 2010 saw the first MDM and Volume Purchase Program. iOS 5 in 2011 added over the air os updates, Siri management, and provided administrators with the ability to disable the backups of iOS devices to Apple's iCloud cloud service. iOS 6 saw the addition of APIs for 3rd party developers, managed open in for siloing content, device supervision (which gave us the ability to take additional management tasks on devices we could prove the ownership of) and MDM for the Mac. That MDM for the Mac piece will become increasingly important over the next 7 years. Daft Punk weren't the only ones that got lucky in 2013. That year brought us iOS 7 for macOS 10.9. The spec was updated to manage TouchID settings, give an Activation Lock bypass key for supervised devices, and the future of per-app settings management came with Managed App Config. 2014 gave us iOS 8 and MacOS 10.10. Here, we got the Device Enrollment Program which allows devices to enroll into an MDM server automatically at setup time and and Apple Configurator enrollments, allowing us to get closer to zero touch installations again. 2015 brought with it The Force Awakens and awakened Device-based VPP in iOS 9 and macOS 2015, which finally allowed administrators to push apps to devices without needing an AppleID, the B2B App Store which allowed for pushing out apps that weren't available on the standard app store, supervision reminders which are important as it was the first inkling of prompting users in an effort to provide transparency around what was happening on their devices, the ability to enable and disable apps, the ability to manage the home screen, and kiosk mode, or the ability to lock an app into the foreground on a device. The pace continued to seem frenzied in 2016, when Justin Timberlake couldn't stop the feeling that he got when in iOS 10 and macOS 10.12 he could suddenly restart and shut down a device through MDM commands. And enable Lost Mode. This was also the year Apple shipped their first operating system in a long, long time when APFS was deployed to iOS. Millions of devices got a new filesystem during that upgrade, which went oh so smoothly due to the hard work of everyone involved. iOS 11 with macOS 10.13 saw less management being done on the Mac but a frenzy of updates bringing us Classroom 2 management, FaceID management, AirPrint management, the ability to add devices to DEP through Apple Configurator, QR code based enrollment, User Approved Kernel Extension Loading for Mac and User Approved MDM enrollment for Mac. These last two meant that users needed to explicitly accept enrollment and drivers loading, again trading ease of use out for transparency. Many would consider this a fair trade. Many administrators are frustrated by it. I kinda' think it is what it is. 2018 saw the Volume Purchase Program, the portal to build an Apple Push Notification certificate, and the DEP portal collapsed into Apple Management Programs, with the arrival of Apple Business Manager. We also got our first salvo of Identity providers with oauth for managed Exchange Accounts, we got the ability to manage tvOS apps on devices and we could start restricting password auto-fill. And this year, we get new content caching configuration options, bluetooth management, autonomous single app mode, os update deferrals, and the automatic renewal of Active Directory Certificates. This year we also get a new enrollment type which uses a Managed Apple ID and then separate encrypted volumes for data storage. What's so special about Apple's MDM push? Well, for starters, they took all that legacy IT industry dogma from the past 30 years and decided to do something different. Or did they? The initial MDM options looked a lot like At Ease, a tool from the 1980s. And I mean some of the buttons say the same thing they said on the screens for Newton management. The big difference here is that Push Notifications needed to be added as you couldn't connect to a socket on a device running on your local network. Because most of the iPhones weren't on that network. But the philosophy of managing only what you have to to make the lives of your coworkers better means pushing settings, not locking users from changing their background. Or initially it meant that at least. The other thing that is so striking is that this was the largest and fastest adoption of enterprise technology I've seen. Sometimes the people who have survived this era tend to get a bit grumpy because the cheese is moved… EVERY YEAR! But keep in mind that Apple has sold 1.4 billion iPhones as have 423 million iPads, and don't forget a couple hundred million Macs. That's over 2 billion devices we've had to learn to cope with. Granted, not all of them are in the enterprise. But imagine this: that's more than the entire population of China, the US, and Indonesia. How many people in those three out of the top 5 populated countries in the world go to work every day. And how many go to school. It's been a monumental and rapid upheaval of the IT world order. And it's been fun to be a part of!

In Part 1 of this series, Marc covers the first half of a feedback session with Juan about his personality assessment. The second half of the feedback session will be in next week’s episode. Key Takeaways: [1:20] Marc welcomes you to Episode 83 of the Repurpose Your Career podcast and invites you to share this podcast with like-minded souls. Please subscribe, share it on social media, write an honest iTunes review, or tell your neighbors and colleagues. [1:48] This begins a four-part series called “Can Juan Repurpose His Career?” Juan is in his mid-fifties, a former school teacher, technology trainer, adjunct professor, and multipotentialite. Juan is trying to figure out what is next. This episode is the first half of the first feedback session Marc held with Juan. You will hear the second half next week. [2:16] You will find all the reports used in this four-episode series at CareerPivot.com/Juan. You may pause the podcast now to download the reports. Or you could listen to the episode, download the reports, and listen to it again. [2:36] Marc will take a two-week break after Episode Two of this series, then he will be back with an interview and then a report on the Miller family’s pivot to Mexico before the Parts Three and Four episodes of this series, “Can Juan Repurpose His Career?” Marc will later do a similar series with “Sarah.” [3:02] Marc thanks Juan for being willing to share his Birkman Assessment with the audience. Juan talks about his background. He attended a community college, a state university, and then earned a Master’s degree. He saw education as an insurance policy that would make him lay-off proof. He has changed his mind about that. [4:51] Juan has been an educator, a computer technology trainer, a financial education trainer, a public school teacher, and taught at a college and a university. He didn’t want to follow the rigid path of his father who worked 40 years at a steel mill.[6:00] Marc points out that a school teacher has a rigid schedule. Juan does not want to return to teaching school if he has other options. [6:44] Marc starts to go into the Birkman Assessment with Juan. Juan’s ego is fed externally. He needs people around him for support. He needs a tribe. He worries and thinks a lot before making big decisions. [7:29] Juan gives his first reaction to reading the personality assessment. He had never taken an assessment and he found it to be insightful and revealing.[8:27] Marc promises Juan more clarity as they explore the report. First comes the Signature Summary. At the top, there are Birkman Components. For each component there is a Usual Behavior number and a Needs number. The first number is how Juan describes his behavior. The second number is how Juan wants to be treated. [8:55] Juan follows the normative pattern but has some big gaps. His Social Energy shows he is a closet introvert. His Self-Consciousness score shows he wants people to treat him with respect — more than he treats them. His Thought score shows he considers himself a quick thinker but big decisions are painful for him. [9:39] In a number of areas, Juan throws off a false persona. In some areas it is real. Juan “looks like” a teacher. [10:03] Next is Birkman Interests. Juan’s numbers indicate he has a wide variety of interests. The Birkman Map of his usual behavior shows that Juan wants to be treated differently than his behavior and interests indicate. He has learned to behave like an introvert. Marc relates to that. [11:11] Next Marc covers the Birkman Interests page. Numbers above 90 refer to ‘must-haves.’ Juan has only one area above 90: Literary. He loves to read books on business, biographies, history, science, spiritual topics, sociology, nature. He reads at least an hour a day for enjoyment, relaxation, and education. [12:21] Marc recommends taking a 15-minute book break when Juan gets stressed. Juan also likes writing on a blog or for a copy. He journals a few lines every day. Marc notes that you can’t always get paid for writing. The next highest area is Scientific. Juan likes figuring things out in research. He lists a few interests. [15:02] Juan also has a high Musical number. He gives a few of his musical interests. Juan has a moderately high Technical number. He likes solving problems. [15:57] Juan has a lot of categories in the middle: Administrative, Artistic, Persuasive, Outdoors, Social Service. Numerical is his lowest number. Most of Juan’s interest are in the middle range. Every few years in Juan’s career he has gotten bored and moved on. [17:21] Marc describes Juan as a multipotentialite. Ten to fifteen percent of the population fits this category. They are generalists. Corporate America values specialists, not generalists. [18:07] Marc goes to the Behavioral Matrix for three areas: Interpersonal, Organizational and Time Management/Planning (decision making). Marc compares Juan’s numbers with the median numbers. [19:38] The first topic is Self-Consciousness and sensitivity when dealing with others. Juan’s usual behaviors are Frank, Direct, and Matter-of-Fact. His score is a six compared to the median score of 25. His Needs are to be treated with more respect than he treats others. If he is berated, it bothers him. [22:21] Juan's needs are not obvious from his usual behavior. It is easy for others to mistakenly assume he needs to be treated in a frank and direct manner. His feelings may be hurt, on occasion. He wears his emotions. [23:31] Juan’s Stress Reactions are Embarrassment, Shyness, and Oversensitivity. As a child he enjoyed being alone, reading, and working by himself. [25:07] Juan’s Social Energy is that he is generally pleasant, outgoing, and at ease and comfortable in group activities. His warm manner helps him meet people easily, which is good in social situations. Juan’s Usual Behaviors are Sociable, Communicative, and At Ease in Groups. His Social number is 98 against the median of 75. [25:30] Juan’s Needs: his high Social number conceals Juan's need to spend time alone or in the company of one or two significant individuals. He has learned how to behave socially but it consumes a lot of his energy. When he networks it has to be for a specific interest. [27:38] Continuous pressure to be in social situations can upset his sense of well-being. Without sufficient time to himself, Juan is likely to become withdrawn, possible to a surprising extent. [28:30] Marc recommends that Juan should bracket recharge time before and after a networking event to be alone. Marc gives an example from his own experience. [30:36] Juan reads the Possible Stress Reactions: withdrawal, tendency to ignore groups, impatience. Juan agrees. That is one of the reasons Juan is looking at a career transition. [31:07] Emotional Energy is the next area. Juan is open and comfortable with expressing emotion. Juan prefers not to get too involved in the emotional problems of other people and finds it important to keep the facts in sight. At the same time Juan has a genuine understanding and sympathy for people’s feelings. [31:34] Juan’s Usual Behaviors are objective yet warm, sympathetic yet practical. Juan’s number is 51 against the median of 25. For a male, he is pretty emotional. He talks about how he relates in difficult emotional situations. [32:26] Juan’s Needs number is 82. His Needs are that he functions best in surroundings that allow him and others to express and work out their emotional responses. He needs to feel that others are aware of his feelings and value them. He wants to feel significant and valued. [33:11] As Juan looks back, he sees his career has tilted more toward female-dominated career areas. Marc says this is where men who are emotional will do better. Marc compared this to “Tim’s” experience. Tim and Juan both want people to outwardly care about them. [35:59] Juan’s causes of stress: when Juan thinks others are overlooking his feelings, he tends to overemphasize the importance of his feelings and become dispirited. Juan’s Stress Reactions are becoming overly sensitive, loss of objectivity, and strong discouragement. [36:48] Juan’s usual behaviors in Drive for Personal Rewards are being competitive and business-like and he values what will promote immediate purposes and objectives. Juan enjoys personal competition and finds bargaining stimulating and desirable. [37:05] Juan is competitive, resourceful, and opportunity-minded. This behavior is not typical of an educator. Juan’s needs are very typical of an educator. [38:10] Juan needs an environment that encourages individual performance and motivates people with individual incentives. It is important to Juan that personal efforts and achievements are continually recognized and rewarded. He wants people to notice his good work. The education system is not oriented around recognizing educators. [39:18] Marc says that for people who have a high need to feel valued, there are six motivators for them, the mission (non-profits or military), public recognition, the bonus check, and the pat on the back from your boss, your team, or your client. [39:57] Marc gives Juan an assignment to get clear about what he wants. He needs to reflect back on when he has been the happiest, when he has felt the most valued, and what they did to make him feel that way. People want to be rewarded in their own way. The only way to communicate that to your boss is to go ask for it. [40:54] Marc shares when he received no client feedback, vs. ‘Wow!’ client feedback. [42:02] Juan’s causes of stress: his basic attitudes cause him to put his own interests above the interests of others, without being fully aware of it. People who are too trusting and idealistic annoy Juan. He sees them as phony. Juan’s stress reactions are to act self-protectively, become materialistic, and be self-promoting. [43:59] Non-profits and schools, which tend to be very idealistic, are not great long-term environments for Juan. Juan has just realized they are not a good match for his personality. [43:25] Marc’s last thoughts: Juan, as a multipotentialite, bounced around in his career, doing something different, every few years. Now in his mid-fifties, with no obvious direction, Marc will attempt to steer Juan to the path to success. [45:06] Check back next week, when Marc will finish the first feedback session with Juan. All the Rabbis have been wrong for 2,000 years. The Math of Christ uses the fundamental tenets of science to prove conclusively that Jesus Christ fulfilled the prophecies about the coming Messiah for all people. Predictions written centuries before the birth of Christ describe how man can identify the only valid offer of salvation and eternal life for all mankind. True Christians already possess sufficient faith in Christ as the Messiah. This book is written for those technical people and children whose faith may be challenged by science taught in public schools. The Math of Christ will show you how the odds of forty prophecies about the Messiah could not possibly have happened by accident, but rather had to have been the result of a purposeful design. The Father of Mathematical Probability, Dr. Emil Borel confirms that these events were no grand coincidence. Readers will also discover how many other prophecies in the Bible have already come true, how the Bible is full of science knowledge revealed centuries before man actually discovered these facts, how the Earth was made specifically for man to live in and how life would be impossible if very minor changes were made in its existence. Every Christian will want to read The Math of Christ to strengthen their own faith. They will also want a copy for every person they have tried to witness to and reach.
