Autistic podcast hosts, Dr. Angela Lauria and Matt Lowry, LPP, delve into the fascinating world of chess, exploring its profound connection to the Autistic community through the story of legendary chess player Bobby Fischer and the popular TV show, The Queen's Gambit. Chess is considered a quintessential part of Autistic culture, much like trains or Star Trek. The intricate, strategic nature of chess captivates Autistic children, teens, and adults, drawing them into a realm where deep focus and pattern recognition are highly rewarded.“And I know for me, a lot of my drive to success in all things is, I've known I have this intense and eccentric and unlikable personality. So, I'm going to prove my value with my accomplishments…That doesn't always work, and I'm always shocked.” –AngelaBobby Fischer was a chess prodigy who showed many traits common to people on the autism spectrum, like intense focus, a preference for logic/rules, and differences socializing. He became World Chess Champion in 1972, defeating the Soviets during the Cold War era.The fictional character Beth Harmon from The Queen's Gambit was loosely based on Fischer. Harmon navigates the complexities of life and chess while exhibiting traits that resonate with many Autistic individuals.Autistic traits like strong pattern recognition, bottom-up thinking, inductive reasoning, and monotropic focus lend themselves well to excelling at chess. Chess doesn't ask players to make small talk, but instead focuses on strategy and problem solving, allowing Autistics to socialize in an authentic and culturally appropriate way.“When you find the Autistic community, when you find people who get you, you can be a delightful human being and talk about all the interesting things that you want to talk about. And they'll say, ‘Oh, my, what a wealth of information that was. I love that info dump!'” –MattHighly talented Autistic chess players exemplify the Autistic culture virtues of pursuing excellence through interests, valuing fairness and morality, and respecting an opponent's strategic skills. On this captivating virtual culture trip, the podcast hosts uncover the deep-rooted connection between chess, Bobby Fischer, The Queen's Gambit, and the Autistic community, celebrating the power and beauty of neurodiversity through the timeless game of strategy.Do you love chess or other strategy games? Did you know chess is one of the most popular and oldest games in the World? Lucas and Austin lead a discussion on how chess has made a huge comeback! “But as I recall, the chess boom kind of happened right after COVID started because everyone had to stay inside, and no one enjoyed life. And then they found that they could play chess for free online. And they're like, oh, I've been meaning to learn chess. And so they hop on, they'll start playing chess and it was, I remember Chess.com and lichess.org, that two of the bigger sites online for playing chess kind of heated up. And then The Queen's Gambit dropped and everyone and their dogs started playing chess. And so that's where you started seeing a lot of things like just random people playing chess. And then the chess streaming scene popped up quite a bit.” -Austin Okray But…we ask what is the Queens Gambit? The Queen's Gambit is a 2020 miniseries based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis. The title refers to the "Queen's Gambit", a chess opening. Beginning in the mid-1950s and proceeding into the 1960s, the story follows the life of Beth Harmon, a fictional chess prodigy on her rise to the top of the chess world while struggling with drug and alcohol dependency. About Austin: Austin Okray is a data scientist in the Denver area who lived in Wyoming until recently. When not working or in the outdoors, he enjoys playing and studying the game of chess. His favorite openings are the English Opening and the Kan Sicilian. About Lucas Fralick: Lucas is the Program Coordinator for Wyoming Humanities and lives in Gillette, WY. He is an avid reader, bird watcher, and enjoys a good game of chess. Lucas can often be seen playing chess in the wild at coffee shops and other public spaces, frequently using the London System. About Brian Kuehl: Brian Kuehl lives in Sheridan, Wyoming with his wife, Michelle and their daughter Catie. Brian is Director of Government and Public Affairs for Pinion Global, an international agriculture business advisory firm. Brian serves as Vice Chairman of the Wyoming Chess Association (www.WyomingChess.com) and as Treasurer of the Sheridan Chess Association (www.SheridanChess.com) Fun Chess Facts: Chess is a required school subject in Armenia. The longest official game of chess took place in 1989 that went on for 20 hours and included 269 moves. In a single game of chess, there are 400 possible moves after each move played. It is possible to checkmate your opponent in just two moves. Chess is a proven way to improve memory function. About 70% of the adult population has played chess at some point in their lives, and about 605 million adults play chess regularly! History of Chess: The game of chess is believed to have originated in India, where it was call Chaturange prior to the 6th century AD. The game became popular in India and then spread to Persia, and the Arabs. The Arabs coined the term “Shah Mat”, which translates to “the King is dead”. This is where the word “checkmate” came from. Archeologists have discovered ivory playing pieces and chess artifacts in Uzbekistan dating back to 760 AD – chess spread quickly and far! The game of chess reached Western Europe around the year 1000. Around 1475, changes were made to the game, and it evolved into its more current form. Also, around this time formal rules began to appear. https://premierchess.com/chess-culture/a-brief-history-of-chess https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/the_queens_gambit/s01 https://www.forbesindia.com/article/special/how-the-queens-gambit-sparked-a-chess-frenzy/65163/1 As always leave a review if you enjoyed these stories and follow us on Instagram or visit the webpage of the Wyoming Humanities! Good evening sports fans. Just kidding. If you're listening to this, you're not into sports. This past Sunday, AJ, my brother, and myself, got together and re-watched part four of Obi-Wan Kenobi. All I can say is, for everything thing the show does well, it's held back by the awful dialog. Moses Ingram is trying really hard. In doing research for this episode, I noticed she was in Queen's Gambit. She played Jolene, Beth Harmon's childhood friend from the orphanage! I had no idea. The show is getting better. However, the sum of the parts is not equal to the sum of the whole. Shout out to Joe Vargas from The Angry Joe Show and his Angry Review of part four. I laughed my ass off when I saw the thumbnail for his review on YouTube. The three of us agree, the show looks and sounds great. Visual effects, music, cinematography, etc. All of it is fantastic. It cannot make up for the script and the story. They fall short. Here's hoping for part five. P.S. One more thing I mention is thanks to Screen Crush on YouTube. Ryan Arey points out the light sabers the inquisitors collected that are on display in the room that Tala meets Reva in. Just want to give credit to him. I would have missed it, if he hadn't said anything. Good catch. Don't watch Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+. It sucks. Read about Obi-Wan Kenobi when he was a badass. Use these links to support the show. The debate over sex and gender filters through to many areas of our lives today whether its about women-only spaces, trans athletes competing in sporting events or our use of language to define what a woman is. If you are born with an incredible talent for playing chess, people consider it a blessing. However, great gifts come with a great price. Gary and Leo discuss the turbulent story of a chess prodigy Beth Harmon. Vocabulary: prodigy, orphan, the Queen's Gambit, two sides of the same coin, addiction, wipe someone out Cover by Monica Gonzalez (Instagram: @monicagonzalezart) The transcript is available here.
In this episode, Kate and Lance jump into a miniseries following the queen among the squares, Beth Harmon. Listen in as the Nerdagram crew talks about the differences between types in the aggressive stance and debate a typing for Benny (spoilers Lance thinks he is a 1).
It could be a Stan Lee comic. Tragic origin, raised in a nearly-hostile orphanage, forced to learn the world's ropes on her own, and constantly fighting off the effects of tranquilizers, Beth Harmon discovers that she has a superpower: she's REALLY good at chess. The Queen's Gambit tees up tons of great themes about a young woman in the 1950's and 60's making her way in a man's world, navigating relationships, and wrestling with addiction. Is she more than her analytical powers? Can she stand against a Russian grandmaster backed by a chess establishment that has the advantage of decades of experience over her? And along the way, is romance a game she's fated to lose? Gambits are a kind of offer in chess: lots of excitement and the possibility of victory, but with a lot more risk along the way, if you dare to take them on instead of playing it safe in the duller, familiar lines. Turns out that Beth Harmon has a chance to play the Gambit we all get offered: to love and be loved in the broken world, and find patterns of victory in its midst nonetheless.
On this episode I discussed the release of Drake's anticipated album “CLB” and the calculated moves in the game of Chess. Relax. Study your opponent and move in silence. Always remember, when you see a good move, make a better one. Show up for yourself and start making boss moves. The Panel

PATREON TV-SHOW DISCUSSION: This movie was selected by our Patreon Supporters over at the Cinematic Doctrine Patreon. Support as little as $3 a month and have your voice heard! Melvin does a lukewarm open, and Daniel talks about how he followed a bunch of Christian twitter accounts of people who were in the American Gospel: Christ Alone documentary only to find they're more interested in posting about masks than things related to the Bible. Then they talk about The Queen's Gambit, it's strong depiction of relationships, Beth Harmon as a tragically sad character, and its narrative elaboration of a budding feminist wave during the 1960's. Topics: Melvin embarrasses himself with a terrible introduction to the episode, and then Daniel talks about why he finds politics tiresome and uninteresting. Daniel, "The mixture of, like, Biblical knowledge and a platform I think makes people feel like they can talk about anything."Talking about how The Babylon Bee is too smug be healthy for anyone.Introducing The Queen's Gambit [16:34]Melvin doesn't feel it's always appropriate for a buncha 20-year old dudes to explain their opinions on female-centric stories....but he did love how The Queen's Gambit portrayed early childhood development and feminist themes.Daniel loves Anya Taylor-Joy, the soundtrack, the cinematography, and the whole craft of The Queen's Gambit.Excellent portrayal of various relationships and the many stages experienced within them.Daniel, "I'm a sucker for any actor that does a lot with no dialogue. It's just something I enjoy. Call it the "Ryan Gosling in Drive" syndrome."Melvin feels The Queen's Gambit is a good work of feminist fiction.Recommendations: R. Drake and Brent Faiyaz Link Up For "Wasting Time" Produced by Pharrell and Chad Hugo. In this latest Brent Faiyaz track featuring Drake and production from The Neptunes, the artists get in their feelings to drop a euphoric and introspective track. Brent handles the vocals this time around while Drizzy speaks on his summer games once again, delivering 32 collected bars ahead of the release of his Certified Lover Boy album. Continuing the themes from “Gravity” and “Show U Off,” Brent appeals to his muse, respecting her space while urging her to ditch the others pressing her singing, “If you're gonna waste your time, then waste your time with me. You can have all the space, more than you need.” We get a glimpse of how Drake is moving lately in the last verse of the song. He stays free from attachment as he raps about how his love interests “stay calculatin' moves, like Beth Harmon” and claiming the title of “pessimist gold medalist”. He also pays respect to his influences Aaliyah and Prince claiming the “only time I play the back and forth is Aaliyah record” and swearing to be more “Purple Rain Prince than Prince Charmin.” Brent has been biding his time this year with limited releases since his 2020, F*** the World album. This track should come as a pleasant surprise for his loyal fanbase as they await his next project. An interesting detail is the “Wasting Time” cover artwork which is in the same animation style as the solo debut album In My Mind by Pharrell who handled the production of this track alongside Chad Hugo. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/masseffect/support
What does it take to qualify for an EB-1 visa? The Klasko EB-1 team discusses the criteria that might qualify the fictional main character from Netflix's hit miniseries The Queen's Gambit, Beth Harmon. The series follows Beth as she rises to the top of the competitive chess field. EB-1 attorney Allie Dempsey and EB-1 team editor Steve Miller, with EB-1 practice partner Anu Nair, discuss the EB-1 visa qualifying criteria and how they might craft a hypothetical EB-1 petition for Beth Harmon. In real life, EB-1 visas are not just for scientists and Nobel Prize winners. The criteria are flexible enough that top professionals from any industry or field can qualify for an EB-1 classification, one of the most exclusive but direct immigration paths to a U.S. green card. In this second part of the special segment about the hit Netflix series, Garry talks about the key chess games that play a central part within the story. He describes the personal role he played in selecting the various games and the process he followed to create the game between Beth Harmon and Vassily Borgov which forms a central part of the storyline in the final episode.
I thought it would be fun to do an episode featuring Beth Harmon. Some of you might be asking who the heck is Beth Harmon. This was my 2020 Netflix binge. The Queen's Gambit is a series set in the 1950's and the main character is orphan Beth Harmon. If you are looking for a good binge, I highly recommend this one. You might even want to watch it again after this episode and see if you have your own takeaway moments. Book Vs Movie: “The Man Who Fell to Earth” Our first Walter Tevis novel & the cult David Bowie Film Author Walter Tevis created some of the most interesting and unique protagonists in fiction including Beth Harmon in The Queen's Gambit and Eddie Felson in The Hustler. His Jerome Newton of The Man Who Fell to Earth is a humanoid alien from The Altheans who appears to be human (with a drinking problem and large business ambitions) but has a hard time connecting to people on earth emotionally. The 1963 SciFi novel by Tevis resembles closely his own life as he was a man who often felt alienated from his own life. He was born to immense wealth and later lived in poverty in Kentucky. He left his wife and children for another woman and had a drinking problem that lasts over two decades. All while achieving his goal to be a working writer who did not have to have a day job to support himself. Newton leaves The Altheans to come to earth and make enough money to return home and save his family from death via lack of food & water. He makes a home in Kentucky uses his space technology to make millions in hopes of building a craft to escape this world. In the meantime, a woman falls in love with him (he does not return her emotions) and he develops a friendship with a fellow drinker--Nathan Bryce. What happens to him when the FBI investigates his background is sad and tragic. This book is a bummer but the writing is beautiful. Nicolas Roeg directed the 1976 movie which had a terrible release at the time (multiple film studio issues) but is now considered a cult classic taught in colleges around the world. David Bowie (who was at the Zenith of his fame) plays Newton and gives the best performance of his acting career. In this episode, we get the behind-the-scenes trivia from the set, the differences made in the film, and how musician John Phillips wound up creating the soundtrack. So between the book and the film--which did we prefer? Have a listen and find out! In this ep the Margos discuss: The life story of Walter Tevis and how he inserted his own foibles and history into his main characters The casting of David Bowie and what his career was like in the 1970s The soundtrack and whether or not Bowie's estate will release his supposed version The behind-the-scenes gossip and trivia The cast: David Bowie (Thomas Jerome Newton,) Rip Torn (Nathan Bryce,) Candy Clark (Mary-Lou,) Buck Henry (Oliver Farnsworth,) and Bernie Casey (Peters.)

The Queen's Gambit reaches its stride as Beth continues her dominance in the world of chess across several cities beating out Master and Grandmaster players on her way to the U.S. Open in Las Vegas. This episode spans 3 years, a plethora of tournaments, and an epic conclusion with a head-to-head match with Benny. The question is how realistic is all of this dominance, what about the chess play, and the important question of how exactly Beth and her mom flew from Kentucky to Houston on a National Flight....
Transcript:And they can't figure out the middle East, go figure My animal is a tortoise they'll figure she likes Prince, go figure, go figure today's expression guys here on the Vocab man is "go figure" really, fo figure Actually go figure has many different meanings. So the dictionaries tells you. Slightly different definitions. For instance, the Oxford languages. It is an informal North American expression said to express the belief that something is amazing or incredible. If you already know the vocab man. Then you know that I am a fan of the urban dictionary in which actually people can give their own definitions there. So the top definition for go figure goes like that, A remark made to something said that is typical or falls under Murphy's law. Great. Nice activity.Go figure. She likes Prince go figure. If you have your own examples to use the expression, go figure you can send them in at my fluentpodcast@gmail.com. So where did I come across the expression? Go figure actually, I discovered it in a Netflix series. I am currently watching called the queen scam bit. It's about a chess prodigy. And now let's have a closer look at the scene, which takes place in an orphanage where the main character Beth Harmon lifs in a quick side note here, an orphanage is at a residential institution, or let's say like a group home devoted to the care of orphans and other children who were separated from their biological family. Whereas an orphan is a child whose parents have died or unknown or have permanently abandoned them. So we have orphanage and the orphan. All right. So now imagine this situation, many orphans are all standing a queue. Waiting for having their pills. And at this point, you need to understand that the orphanage here in the movie used to distribute tranquilizers. I mean, pills to their orphans in order to keep them quiet. And apparently the public found out about that. So when now in the scene at the Madison window, the main character, Beth looking a bit confused. It looks into her cup and sees only one single pill. Usually she is supposed to receive two of them. There's one missing. That's it. Next! It's my turn. Harmon. Where are the green ones? You don't get them anymore. There they are right behind you. I know where they are. I'm not going to give you any new state law and no more tranquilizers for kids.Go figure,Harmon, go thou further off, made me farewell. And let me hear they go in what beat it.And I found this scene was really great. And it also showed that the main character is going to have a lot of problems. I mean soon Beth will suffer from withdrawal symptoms and I absolutely recommend you to learn English by watching series. For example, with Netflix red letter N unfolds into a spectrum of colors, Because over there you have always the subtitles in it, which can support you in the process of learning. And did you notice right away there was another great expression BEAT IT it's another way of saying to go away, but it is slightly harder thanbut that my friends is a complete other story. And you might learn more about it in another episode of the Vocab man. My animals, a tortoise go figure.

Grüße gehen raus an Anna.

Today we're going to talk about two excellent shows currently showing on Netflix, one everyone is talking about and the other not so much: The Queens Gambit and The Barrier. We hope by the time you listen to this, our great national nightmare is over, but for now, check our webpage for a sample of what went on here on Sunday, 11/01/2020. Margot and Kenny had their first Halloween! Margot as a Unicorn! Kenny as Sweet Pea! See pix on our website! We have a new Facebook group! On a whim, Elaine decided to create a Facebook group for this podcast. Within an hour, we had 50 very active users and growing fast! Thank you to everyone who joined and supports our show! If you want to get in on the fun, here's a link:Travis and Elaine Chat GroupCan't wait to see you there. Lots of people in our group were talking about The Queen's Gambit on Netflix. We'd already watched the pilot on Friday night; we binged the rest on Saturday but saved the finale for Sunday. It took 27 years to finally get Walter Tevis' 1983 novel to the screen. Originally intended to be a feature film, Heath Ledger was attached to direct in 2008, and Ellen Page was courted to star. We get into the long strange trip to Netflix, plus the exceptional cast. Currently, The Queen's Gambit is the #1 series on Netflix. Maybe, it was worth the wait.If you're interested in the novel, we have links on our website. The Outstanding CastLed by a star-making performance by Anya Taylor-Joy is a uniquely quiet tale of isolation, genius, and how one girl navigates the world. With the exception of the episodes where her character Beth Harmon is a kid, Taylor-Joy is essentially in every scene. We knew her from The Witch but didn't even recognize her as Casey Cooke from Split and Glass the two movies that followed one of Elaine's favorite movies. Unbreakable. See pix on our webpageThe supporting cast is solid. Standouts were Bill Camp, Marielle Heller and Thomas Brodie-Sangster. More about them in the episode. For more about the fashion and music in the Queen's Gambit check our webpageThe Barrier The Barrier - La valla (original title) is a Spanish series currently airing. one episode a week on Netflix. Luckily, if you haven't started watching yet, half the episodes are already up for binging. Unbelievably, this series was created and filmed before the pandemic because the parallels are stunning. Yeah, it's another near-future dystopian drama, but it's better and more realistic than most. The cast, although mostly unknown to American viewers includes the remarkable real-life mother and daughter, Olivia Molina and Ángela Molina.Hang in there, everybody. Cya on Facebook!
