This Reformed Rookie podcast episode delves into Titus 1:9, exploring the qualifications and responsibilities of church elders. The discussion centers on the crucial importance of elders holding firm to the trustworthy Word of God (πιστις - *pistis*), emphasizing not just intellectual understanding but also practical application in their lives and ministry. Elders must be characterized by sound doctrine, accurately teaching and applying Scripture, rebuking false teachings and promoting biblical truth. The podcast highlights the dangers of anecdotal preaching lacking contextual understanding and the necessity of confronting false teachers within the church. Pastor Anthony Uvenio contrasts the reliance on God's Word for counseling with secular approaches, emphasizing the inerrant and infallible nature of Scripture as the sole authority. The episode concludes with a discussion on the importance of orthopraxy alongside orthodoxy, and the need for elders to model a life of faith, reflecting God's character and actively combating heresy. A specific example of a false teacher's actions within a conference is used to illustrate the importance of confronting false teaching. The episode also touches upon differing interpretations of biblical terms, such as "porneia," and the importance of preaching biblical truth rather than tradition.00:03:37 - Elders' Devotion & Scripture00:07:52 - Establishing Elders & Doctrine07:45 - Biblical Inspiration & Trials11:14:02 - Trusting God & Doctrine14:52 - God's Word: Trustworthy & True18:35 - Instruction, Preaching & Truth22:30 - Sound Doctrine: Theology & Practice30:01 - Elder Qualifications & Rebuke34:15 - Rebuke, Heresy & Ministry Truth41:12 - Guard Your Heart; Avoid PridePodcast:www.ReformedRookie.comPodcast: https://anchor.fm/reformedrookieFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheReformedRookie Twitter: https://twitter.com/NYapologistSemper Reformanda!

Questions about how biblical inspiration differs from automatic writing, whether or not we don't know who wrote 74% of the New Testament, signing a man-made statement of faith, and how, if the Word of God is powerful, someone who taught it faithfully can go rogue theologically. How is divine inspiration of the Scriptures different from the automatic writing they have in cults? It really does not bother you that you don't know who wrote 74% of the New Testament? It could have been anybody. Is it okay for me to comply with a new requirement for clergy in my denomination to pledge fidelity in writing to its statement of faith? If the Word of God is powerful, how can a preacher who once taught the Word faithfully go rogue theologically?
The Bible is the biggest selling book in the history of the world, and it continues to be the biggest selling book year, after year, after year. It is the authoritative foundation of conduct for nearly 2 billion Christians, and is the source of many of the values of western civilization. But what makes it so powerful? Who says it is so authoritative? Where did it come from? Why should we respect and follow it? All of these questions (and more) will be answered in this fascinating study!

Questioning and ultimately rejecting the traditional view of biblical inerrancy led the author to a crisis of faith. Following the examples of Jesus and Paul, issues of contradictions, moral problems, and cultural contexts in the Bible require a more nuanced understanding of inspiration that allows for human interpretation and reinterpretation. A holistic approach to faith is able to embrace the Bible's complexity while still affirming its spiritual value.

“I have grown to appreciate that I am part of an ancient and diverse Biblical tradition that must handle the scriptures humbly and with the respect they deserve. Interpretation of scripture is a sacred obligation that we are all called to participate in, just like our Jewish and early church fathers did before us. They may have gotten it wrong every now and again – and we will too – but with each new day, let us strive to build on this beautiful divine mystery that is sometimes messy but still a living, breathing, generative tradition.”
Inspiration of Scripture — the idea that God breathed out Scripture through human authors — is something Evangelical Christians would be happy to affirm. It speaks both to its source and authority. And yet, our defense of it rarely goes beyond the mere citation of 2 Timothy 3:16. The AC team came together on this week's edition of the AC Podcast to talk about the inspiration of Scripture more intentionally by taking questions from a young adult.

Besides the world being crazy right now, in so many ways, we also all experience hardships and tragedies in life. It is inevitable. I want everyone to hear this little bit of Biblical inspiration to help them overcome whatever hardships or challenges they are experiencing.
Gabriel Gordon joins the pod to talk about his book God Speaks: A Participatory Theology of Biblical Inspiration. In our conversation, Gabriel talks about what he means by the term "Bible idolatry," why we need to stop equating God's Word with the Bible, and how the jelly donut is perfect analogy for understanding Jesus. Gabriel graduated with a double major in Anthropology and Cross-Cultural Ministry from Oklahoma Baptist University. He is currently working on his Masters of Theological Studies with a specialization in Biblical Studies from Portland Seminary. He has authored two books and is featured in an edited volume of essays on Christian leadership. In addition, he is a confirmed member of the Episcopal church part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, a self-identified Anglo-Orthodox; and one of the co-founders of The Misfits Theology Club, a blog, podcast, and annual conference dedicated to providing a place of dialogue and working to build unity amongst diverse Christians. How do Catholics read the bible? It might sound simple at first, but there is actually quite a bit to keep in mind when reading the Holy Scriptures. For example, what do we actually mean when we say that the bible is inspired by God? What specifically is inspiration? Today, we begin to explore some of these interesting questions. Dr. Oord challenges the doctrine of "biblical inerrancy".
This week, Gabriel Gordon helps us to (re)think our ideas around biblical inspiration. We explore a number of problematic issues facing popular notions of Inspiration today. Gordon applies the idea of Essential Kenosis to the inspiration of scripture and reveals how it provides a better theological basis for developing a doctrine of Biblical Inspiration. If God cannot control the biblical authors, then what they produce as the biblical text is not revelation in and of itself, but a contextualized human response to that revelation. With the rising popularity of Essential Kenosis, the dismantling of popular notions of inspiration through historical criticism, and a reclaiming of the interpretative methods of the early church, God Speaks puts forth a doctrine of inspiration and revelation that better accounts for these realities while more faithfully securing our allegiance to Christ. Enjoy! RESOURCES: God Speaks: A Participatory Theology of Biblical Inspiration (Book)
"God works to influence, persuade, and teach people to move away from their misunderstanding to a better concept of who God is… but that can take time." -Gabriel Gordon This week, I sit down with author, Gabriel Gordon. Gabriel's new book, God Speaks, tackles the topic of Biblical inspiration or in laymen's terms, how can the Bible be the word of God if humans wrote it. Gordon's work Thomas Jay Oord's theology of Essential Kenosis and revealing how it provides a better theological basis for developing a doctrine of Biblical Inspiration. Tom Oord was on the show months back - check it out here. In God Speaks, Gordon is trying to Bible away from people, correcting many assumptions, and then wants to give the Bible back to read and experienced. Too often, do Christians assume the Bible is the inspired, inerrant Word of God, but they tend to ignore the multitude of human fingerprints all over it. There's this fear that putting humanity back in the Bible will somehow diminish it, but it's quite the opposite. When we cease to hold up the Bible as an idol and see it for what it is, then we can embrace it in a new, healthy, and God-honoring way. In God Speaks, Gordon presses the idea that if God cannot control free creatures, then how did the biblical authors interact with God's revelation to produce the biblical text? Join us today for a lively, theological, and eye-opening look into why we should hold and read scripture in a new way. Though it may seem scary, it's quite freeing to see the difference between God and scripture. There is God. There is scripture. They are not the same and that leads us to embrace the humanity of the Bible as we seek to faithfully wrestle and live out scripture. In the Bible, people experienced God through revelation or inspiration and then wrote it down with human hands, understandings, and biases... and that's okay! It doesn't diminish God. In the end, how we choose to hold and interact with scripture says much more about us and our views of God than it does about God or the Bible. It's far time we engage with scripture in human terms as it was meant to be. APM 1 - Biblical Inspiration
What does the Bible mean when it calls itself inspired? This phrase comes 2 Timothy 3:16, "All scripture is inspired by God...." Critics of the Bible say the scriptures contain numerous contradictions, and that it cannot be trusted. For those of us who know it is God's word, this is a serious charge. What a naysayer is declaring is that God is a liar and His word is unreliable. So, is the Bible fool's gold, or is it objective truth? What are the different theories of biblical inspiration? What exactly does it mean that the Bible is God-breathed?
This message continues to examine the concept of Biblical inspiration and the manner of God's revelation to us. This He does through the solid foundation of Biblical teaching and the instrumentality of inspired writers. And the ultimate authority and power standing behind the Word of God is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. His claims and prophecies were backed up by His tremendous power over death.

Jesus was willing to follow the plan of God. Although He had committed no sin and although His crucifixion would be the greatest miscarriage of justice of all times, Jesus was willing to accept crucifixion because His death on the Cross would fulfill the plan of God to save the souls of all of those that believe in Him.
