Vahn Black is a vocalist based in Atlanta, and in this episode we focused on her project celebrating Gladys Bentley, including Vahn's fantastic album Petrichor. Born and raised in Detroit, Vahn grew up in a melting pot of music and this aided her in cultivating her soul-charged, jazz infused sound, marrying her reverence for vocalists like Sarah Vaughn with her love of producers like J Dilla. We talked about her musical education, her career path, her research into Black history and culture, her joy of collecting vinyl and some of her other creative outlets. It was interesting to hear about her contrasting experiences with work, life and music in Detroit, New York and Atlanta. As a composer Black has lent her artistry to various art mediums from short films to interactive performance art. In 2023 she was selected to perform at NPR's Tiny Desk on the Road Tour stop in Atlanta, and for those listeners who are fans of Vahn Black and those who are discovering her, I hope you'll enjoy this conversation which is punctuated with her music. For most of the last 20 years, the conversation about American national security has been focused on the threats posed by extremists. With the death of al Qaeda Leader Ayman al Zawahiri, Russia's war in Ukraine, and rising tensions with China, Javed Ali argues that conversation has swung back to great-power competition. Ali is an associate professor of practice at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan. He spent 20 years of working with national security and intelligence issues in Washington, D.C. at the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Department of Homeland Security before joining the Federal Bureau of Investigation. While at the FBI, he also held senior roles on joint duty assignments at the National Intelligence Council and the National Counterterrorism Center, and the National Security Council under the Trump Administration. Ali holds a JD from the University of Detroit School of Law, and an MA in international relations from American University. One of the remarkable takeaways from the journey of 26-year-old Akil Alvin is that he began to achieve his dreams as he grew up — not when. From creating programming that revitalized his local library at 7 years old, to getting himself a job on the UniverSoul Circus marketing team at age 10, Akil tapped into his calling at a young age. It was a surprise to no one when, at 18, he launched his own company and took his place among the 3% of Black men who serve as the faces and founders of ad agencies throughout this country. It's clear the millennial media visionary felt it when he heard these legendary lyrics by the late Christopher Wallace: “Stay far from timid / Only make moves when your heart's in it / And live the phrase ‘Sky's The Limit.'” As Founder and Global Chief Creative Officer of Detroit Digital Media (DDM), Akil leads a multimedia content creation company that empowers ambitious brands to thrive in contemporary culture through a unique mix of storytelling, insights, and technology, with a dash of irreplaceable #DetroitHustle. Since its launch in 2013 with the help of one of Akil's teachers at the renowned Detroit School of Arts, DDM has grown to work with some of the world's leading brands and municipalities. Their undeniable client roster includes McDonald's, Bank of America, Ford Motor Company, Major League Baseball's Detroit Tigers, the North American International Auto Show, and Coca-Cola. The hustle hasn't been in vain. In 2019, DDM was one of 10 millennial-led companies around the nation to be honored by the National Minority Supplier Development Council, and Akil was recognized as an Emerging Young Entrepreneur, landing a one-year advisory partnership with Warner Media. In 2020, DDM became the first company in history to be advised by the iconic Walt Disney Company. And under Akil's leadership, DDM recently embarked on a full circle and historic moment as the first on record ad agency to sign an exclusive multimillion-dollar agreement with a municipality in the country, handling high-level messaging and rebranding for the CIty of Detroit. In 2022, Akil was named one of Forbes Magazine 30 Under 30, as one the top 30 advertising executives in North America. Akil has embedded the importance of giving back into DDM's core, and together the team developed a community engagement program called The Mentoring Loft to mold the next generation of entrepreneurs and creatives. In this episode of Smart Energy Voices, host John Failla continues SED's series on “Inspiring Diversity in Energy.” This conversation was part of the recent Distributed Energy Forum with a panel featuring Cheryl Comer, Strategic Account Manager - Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions, Gilbert Campbell, Co-Founder & CEO - Volt Energy, and Denis George, Category Manager for Energy - The Kroger Company. You won't want to miss this meaningful conversation on how collaboration can help accelerate success in diversifying the supplier rosters of large electric power users. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... Backgrounds and current roles [02:31] Challenges in engaging large customers [06:35] The importance of collaboration [12:53] Volt Energy's community efforts [16:36] What is DiCE? [18:49] Environmental Justice PPAs [26:46] Collaboration for new ideas Humankind is in a race against time to save the planet. Innovation and transformation need to happen. Different mindsets and thought processes working together bring value and best-in-class ideas to the table. Collaboration provides an excellent opportunity to get to know key stakeholders in other communities and become exposed to new ideas. For example, social justice and a PPA would never have been correlated before, but amazingly and effectively, they are now. Diversity focuses on connecting people in various communities so such ideas can develop and expand. Diversity in Clean Energy (DiCE) The creation of DiCE was prompted when T Mobile became one of Cheryl's strategic accounts. Amy Bond, Energy Procurement Program Manager - T Mobile, asked Cheryl how Duke Energy interacts with diverse suppliers. In response, Duke Energy held a two-day roundtable discussion about tracking diverse suppliers. They realized that corporations don't usually share contacts when they have them. The communication that did happen was limited to word of mouth. Duke's vision of DiCE is to open doors, utilize, and amplify the stories of diverse suppliers. One of DiCE's key objectives is to create a database or repository for diverse suppliers, which is being sponsored by Microsoft. They want to ensure that the energy industry has a good database without systemic barriers. While DiCE is growing, it's running on a two-year pilot in a smaller nexus with Kroger, T Mobile, Microsoft, and diverse suppliers. There is significant interest from organizations that want to join. Meanwhile, they can raise awareness and take action in their own space. Justice in the environment Environmental Justice PPAs are Volt Energy's response to ensure that rural communities aren't left behind in the transition to clean energy. Volt Energy prioritizes developing projects in economically disadvantaged rural areas, particularly where fossil fuel plants have been shut down, to help with economic revitalization. They also recognize the plight of many minority communities that haven't had access to participate in the clean energy boom. Volt Energy explains that these communities have risked their lives for the last 100 years to ensure everyone has power. They've dealt with environmental injustice in basic necessities like clean water and air. As power plants are shutting down in a transition to clean energy, it's fair to prioritize those communities. There are many great environmental justice organizations doing great work both at the national and local levels. Volt Energy invests in programs and projects conducted by these organizations to continue this good work. Volt also works with small businesses. One of the major barriers for small businesses, particularly diverse small businesses, is capital. Volt Energy is looking into providing microloans to businesses to help reduce some of the financial burdens. These loans offer an avenue for scaling diverse businesses. This Week's Guests: Rev. Dr Marcia Ledford Comedian Boris Khaykin The World's Famous comedy Cellar presents "Live From America Podcast" with Noam Dworman and Hatem Gabr. The top experts and thinkers of the world and the best comics in the Nation get together weekly with our hosts to discuss different topics each week, News, Culture, Politics, comedy & and more with an equal parts of knowledge and comedy! The Rev. Dr. Marcia Ledford's ministry focuses on Southwest Detroit's Latinx population — located at an international port with an aggressive regional ICE director. Dr. Ledford is a civil rights attorney representing society's most marginalized. She has dedicated her working life to the pursuit of justice because when one group of persons is diminished, we are all thus diminished. An Episcopal priest, Dr. Ledford studied theology at the Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit, Michigan. While there, she engaged in urban studies for ministry and explored theologies of the marginalized from around the world. Dr. Ledford holds a Master of Divinity from the (Episcopal) Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP). She earned her Doctor of Ministry in political theology from the Pacific School of Religion (PSR). Both CDSP and PSR are member schools of the Graduate Theological Union, a preeminent global and interfaith consortium for theological study. In college, she majored in American History and Psychology at Albion College. These academic concentrations prepared her for exploring and understanding the psychographic nature of American history and how skin color dictates the American social agenda. Dr. Ledford earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit School of Law, a Jesuit school. She adopted a foundation of Christian faith in legal jurisprudence plus the standard curriculum. Her ministry incorporates Catholic Social Teaching (CST) as its cornerstone. CST's Gospel emphasis protects every human being's dignity and works toward the common good to usher in God's Reign. The Episcopal Baptismal Covenant reflects the same emphasis. It requires the faithful to uphold the dignity of personhood and serves as the foundation for Dr. Ledford's teaching of political theology basics in her courses. Dr. Ledford's first career as a civil rights attorney concentrated on cases involving the First Amendment and Equal Protection under the Fourteenth Amendment. Her mission combines her love of the Gospel with expertise in the US Constitution to help others exercise their civil rights to establish a more just American society. Political Theology Matters, LLC, founded by Dr. Ledford, helps the faithful develop public theology mission and broadcast messaging for greater social justice. She is trained for community organizing through the Industrial Areas Foundation and volunteers with Michigan United, where she has a particular interest in racial reconciliation and immigration reform. Dr. Ledford is an award-winning documentary photographer, writer, blogger, keynote speaker, teacher, and preacher. She convenes the Public Theology Network for Province V (the Midwest) of the Episcopal Church. This episode is made in partnership with Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions. In this season of Beyond the Meter, we're taking a closer look at the meaningful impact renewable energy projects have on the world around us. In this episode, host John Failla is joined by Darrell Booker, Corporate Affairs Specialist leading the Nonprofit Tech Acceleration Program for Black and African American Communities (NTA) at Microsoft Philanthropies, Cheryl Comer, Senior Strategic Account Manager - Duke Energy, and Tracy Woods, VP, Operations - American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE), to talk about their collaborative efforts on the recently created Diversity In Clean Energy (DiCE) initiative. DiCE, a program to advance equity in clean energy, is an initiative sponsored by Duke Energy's Strategic Account Management Program. Listen in to learn more about the progress being made to promote diversity in the energy industry. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... They work on policies and professional development to ensure that their members can be cultural ambassadors in the communities where they live and work. AABE receives many calls from employers seeking diverse talent. To serve this need, they provide scholarships and programs for high school and middle school students interested in careers in the energy field, job postings through their newly revamped Career Center, and numerous programs like Black Energy Awareness Month. The Diversity in Clean Energy (DiCE) Initiative DiCE is a program sponsored by Duke Energy to drive visibility and open doors of opportunity for diverse suppliers in the clean energy field. At Duke Energy, DE&I (diversity, equity, and inclusion) is a business imperative inspiring how they work with employees, customers and their communities. They're taking intentional action for the good of both the community and business. The idea for DiCE was sparked by a request from T-Mobile via their Energy and Sustainability Program Manager, Amy Bond, who asked Cheryl what Duke Energy was doing to identify, train, track and utilize diverse suppliers. This question inspired Cheryl to open the conversation to her other strategic accounts, as she knew they would all benefit from this conversation around diversity, equity, inclusion, and how that relates to clean energy. Through these discussions, she realized that there was ample opportunity, interest and need for the resources supported by the DiCE initiative. Collaboration in the energy industry The energy industry is in the midst of a massive transformation. As one of the largest utilities in the United States, Duke Energy has an obligation to provide reliable, affordable, and increasingly cleaner energy to customers and communities. One of the most efficient ways to initiate change is by cross-industry leaders coming together, pooling resources, and solving complex problems. While many corporations realize that they want to work with diverse suppliers, they don't know where to start. The ultimate goal of the DiCE | AABE platform is to facilitate the inclusion of diverse suppliers into mainstream corporate supply chains and to eliminate systemic barriers. Everyone in this collaboration has something different to bring to the table: Duke Energy has the means, AABE has the connections, and Microsoft has the technology. As the DiCE | AABE platform continues to grow, there are endless opportunities to fulfill its mission and we look forward to seeing the positive effect it will have in the clean energy space. Dr. McKinley’s daughter, Brittany, graduated from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry in 2011 and is now continuing the family tradition into the 3rd generation! The McKinley Family has provided dental care in Macomb County and throughout the State of Michigan for over 65 years. Ray is part of a family with a history of hard work, including building McKinley Airport in Fraser, learning to fly solo by age 16, the development of Pine Valley Golf Course in Romeo, past president of the Romeo Chamber of Commerce, former president of the Romeo Kiwanis Club, a delegate to Washington DC’s Conference for Small Business, and building numerous dental offices throughout Michigan. Ray continues to stay involved in growing and developing his community. Ray and his wife Lynn have six children, and five grandchildren. Ray has written the book, "Ride the Elephant". Ride the Elephant calls out the elephant in the room that holds you back, that has been hiding in plain sight, then challenges you with questions and answers you have never considered before. You will dive very deep, if you allow yourself to go that far, into why we act, think and behave as we do. You will likely see that today’s normal daily reactions are really creating a waterfall event with those around you. The interplay of so many feelings and reactions like hate, blame, excuses, accountability, judgment, fear, and pride are examined. You will begin to consider how this juxtaposition of emotions are creating havoc in your life – like “the elephant in the room.” https://raymckinley.com

Community Development in Detroit Discussion II featuring Raul Echevarria, Khary Frazier, and Yusef Bunch Shakur Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at the University of Detroit School of Architecture in the Peter Peirce Room. Presented by Community Movement Builders, Detroit is Different, Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion, and the University of Detroit In this discussion, I (Khary Frazier) framed information and questions to focus on the business (money) of community development. My premise was many corporations are using the distressed status (perpetually marketed by media of Detroit) to leverage subsidies, tax relief, unchecked lending, and neglectful investment. In this talk defining these practices with Yusef & Raul was important. CDFI's (Community Development Financial Institutions) of Detroit have received over 182 Million dollars connected to the CDFI program that was established to assist housing, businesses, and non-profit organizations in community development. The CDFI program was started from the Riegle Community Development and Regulatory Improvement Act of 1994 (here is a link to the act that establishes CDFI's surprisingly very thorough https://www.fdic.gov/regulations/laws/rules/8000-5400.html). In 1996 the first Detroit CDFI monies from the US Treasury were sent to Shorebank receiving 3.75 million dollars. Here is an article by NYTimes as a brief overview of why Shore Bank failed (according to many financial analysts) https://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/23/business/23cncshorebank.html, many felt that the risks with homeowners were too much for Shorebank. Currently, CDFI's have no needed oversight but there is a third party ranking system developed by Aeris that many use to audit their effectiveness. Here is a link to the Aeris website: https://www.aerisinsight.com/ . CDFI's can also receive funding from banks (like Bank of America) and foundations (like Kresge) in the form of investment and/or grants. Many banks pay for and submit the Aeris audit request to verify the livelihood and financial legitimacy of the CDFI (which I think is problematic because traditional lending has been so racist, here is a great book about the practice released last year: https://www.amazon.com/Color-Money-Black-Racial-Wealth-ebook/dp/B076526LW5). CDFI, CDC, HUD, Urban Foundation, Community Development, Detroit, Raul Echevarria, Khary Frazier, Yusef Bunch Shakur, Community Movement Builders, Detroit is Different, Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion, University of Detroit. Ignite 2 Impact Podcast - Raise up and Inspire the Next Generation of Leaders
Raised in Saginaw, Atkins worked hard to overcome childhood challenges, including family turmoil and abuse, to graduate from St. Joseph's High School. She continued her education at SVSU, earning a bachelor's degree in psychology. Atkins then completed a law degree at the University of Detroit School of Law. After graduation, she became a lawyer and then was appointed the chief judge in Detroit's 36th District Court for 12 years until her retirement in 2012. After retiring from the bench, Atkins wrote her autobiography “The Triumph of Rosemary: A Memoir,” which was published in 2017. The memoir – at times raw and in other passages heartwarming – addresses important topics of diversity and social change. Born to an Italian teen and a married black man in Detroit in 1946, Atkins was adopted by a black couple in Saginaw. At age 19, she sparked a racial and religious scandal by marrying former Roman Catholic priest Thomas Lee Atkins, who was white and 25 years older than she. The couple had two biracial daughters, Elizabeth Ann Atkins and Catherine Marie Atkins Greenspan, who look white. The parents worked full time, and in a reversal of traditional gender roles, Marylin Atkins attended law school at night while Tom took the high-achieving girls to lessons for swim, piano, and skiing. Both daughters ultimately completed graduate degrees. Over time, family rifts resulting from the interracial marriage began to heal, fostering harmony and healing. The Atkins family's lifestyle includes friendships and associations with people of a cornucopia of race, religion, and culture. Atkins currently resides Detroit. Her late husband died in 1990. Their daughters created a publishing company, Two Sisters Writing and Publishing, which published “The Triumph of Rosemary.” Visit https://www.thetriumphofrosemary.com/ for more information Keep in contact with us, sign up and get our free gift to YOU: https://drgenevaspeaks.com Follow our hashtag #ignite2impact Please share this podcast & let us what you think, *subscribe in iTunes and leave a review

IT in the D was founded upon the principle of making things suck less for the Metro Detroit IT industry. Whether it be meetups, recruiting, job seeking, job fairs, podcasts, we have always strived to change the way things were being done. Roughly four years ago, we heard complaints about the training industry being broken. While people wanted to increase their skill set, they couldn't spend 8 weeks from 9AM-5PM in a bootcamp while spending as much as a small car. With a few phone calls, a few meetings, and some beta users, the IT in the D Career Academy was born... IMPORTANT NOTE: We are currently full and have a wait list in place. Any registrations at this point will be placed onto our wait list, and will be notified as slots become available. We have now partnered with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), Detroit School for Digital Technology (DSDT), and our numerous contacts in the job placement field to offer self-study training, free certification testing, and job placement for people interesting in getting started in a career in Information Technology. This program is built on The Path whereas this is your first step in your career, where you take it is up to you, but this is merely the beginning. Who is eligible? We are basing this on a first come, first serve basis. This program is for those new to the industry, not to re-new expiring certifications. What certifications are you offering? We are suggesting that two CompTIA Certifications are obtained, A+ and Net+. Security+ is an option if you would like to pursue a career in Cyber Security. How long will this take? Again, this based on your schedule. There is no time frame to complete these certifications, however you must communicate with IT in the D every two-weeks on your progress or your seat will be given to someone else. What happens when I complete the certifications? You will work with the MEDC, MichWorks, and IT in the D recruiters to be places in a level one help desk position with a company in Southeast Michigan. If you are interested and are 100% committed, fill out the form below and we will be in touch. IMPORTANT NOTE: We are currently full and have a wait list in place.
