After spending the day in the US Open press conference room, Catherine Whitaker, David Law and Matt Roberts react to what the top players had to say as they prepare for the tournament. Part one - We discuss the way Carlos Alcaraz left us feeling positive about his return from injury, detailing that his wrist has felt fine in practice, that he's using his experience of being injured in 2024 to help him, and that he plans to play his usual game style. So what can we expect from him this tournament? There's also chat about how the other men's contenders - such as Ben Shelton, Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz - are largely playing down any talk of this being a big opportunity with Jannik Sinner not in the draw. What do we make of that? Part two (22:10) - On the women's side, defending champion Aryna Sabelenka has been struggling for form recently. In what way was she defensive about that in her press conference? And can we read anything into it? Coco Gauff, on the other hand, discussed how she's in a much better place mentally and with her game compared to twelve months ago, while Alexandra Eala spoke with incredible maturity about understanding her growing influence on the sport. Part three (43:45) - We cover some of the stories from qualifying, including more heartbreak for 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu, defeat for the retiring 2014 finalist Kei Nishikori, and lots of British success. For ad-free listening and bonus content, Become a Friend. Talk to a HG Coach 1-on-1: https://bit.ly/46bIkdoDr. K's NEW Guide to Love, Sex, & Relationships is here! Moving away from the high-stakes, dramatic gestures often seen in movies, he breaks down the science of social environments, the developmental stages of attraction, and why a grand confession of love is almost guaranteed to sabotage your chances. What to expect in this episode: The Friends-to-Lovers Blueprint: Why the dreaded "friend zone" is actually the most common path to romance, with data showing that 70% of couples start out as friends. You'll also learn why you must play the long game, as the average successful transition takes 21.9 months. The Open vs. Closed Field Dynamics: How dating apps act as "open fields" where physical attractiveness is virtually the only deciding factor. In contrast, "closed fields" (like work projects or friend groups) naturally highlight deeper, highly attractive traits like humor, reliability, and shared values. Small Talk is a Red-Flag Filter: Why the primary goal of small talk isn't actually to get to know someone, but rather a crucial "safety assessment" designed to weed out catastrophic red flags before you invest your energy. Why Grand Confessions Backfire: How blurting out a dramatic, high-stakes declaration of love maximizes psychological uncertainty, panics your friend, and forces them to pull away from the friendship entirely to regain safety. The Six Destabilizing Triggers: The specific events that shake up a stable friendship and can trigger romantic feelings, ranging from supportive bonding during a personal crisis to the sudden threat of competing relationships. The One-Sided Exclusivity Trap: Why closing yourself off to other dating options while waiting around for a friend actually decreases your chances of being with them, and how third-party interest often serves as the catalyst they need to realize their feelings. The Art of Reducing Uncertainty: A practical guide to navigating the transition by systematically managing behavioral, mutuality, definitional, and future uncertainty. Dr. K explains how to make small, explicit moves that protect the friendship, giving your partner the safety to explore dating without fearing they will lose you forever. 878. Eight glasses a day. An ounce per pound. A pinch of salt in your water. Everyone has a hydration rule, and most of them came from somewhere other than the research. This live episode was recorded in front of an audience at the Friends of the National Arboretum in Washington, DC (@fonarboretum), with an outdoor yoga session led by Bikram Yoga Works (@bikramyogaworks). Thank you to both for making the night possible.Monica Reinagel, MS, LDN, answers listener questions about hydration and explains what the research actually supports. She breaks down the four phases of hydration, which are intake, absorption, retention, and distribution, and explains why sodium and glucose work together to pull fluid out of your digestive system and into your tissues faster than water alone. That mechanism is exactly what an electrolyte drink mix like Liquid I.V. is built around, which is why it can be such a useful tool when you are sweating hard, training, traveling, or just trying to keep up on a hot day.Monica also covers how much water you really need each day, how much of it you already get from food and other beverages, and how much fluid and sodium you lose through sweat.Plus, she takes listener questions on whether sugar free electrolyte drinks work as well as the sugared kind, how to think about sodium guidelines when you are sweating heavily, whether it is possible to drink too much water, whether a pinch of salt or a squeeze of lemon does anything, whether coffee and tea count toward your daily fluids, what apple cider vinegar in your morning water actually does, and whether reverse osmosis water needs minerals added back in.Topics include hydration, electrolytes, sodium, healthy habits, nutrition myths, viral nutrition claims, sports drinks, caffeine, and evidence based nutrition. The science of hydration, presented by Liquid I.V. @liquidiv #paidpartnerUse the code 2026ND on liquidiv.com for 20% off your first order.Special thanks to Friends of the National Arboretum and Bikram Yoga Works. In June, I sent out a Friday Thread prompt that readers had been asking for, in one shape or another, for years: How do we talk about non-romantic breakups? Why do they sting SO MUCH? Why is the vocabulary around a friend breakup so paltry? I know many people found tremendous solace just reading through other people's stories and knowing that 1) friend breakups are part of life and 2) yes, as a culture, we are very bad at acknowledging them let alone grieving them. For this month's subscriber-only bonus episode, Margaret and I decided to do a deep read of the thread — and a deep revisiting of our own friend histories — to talk about different "buckets" of friend breakups, how we process them in the moment and as we age, what facilitates them (bad communication!), and why they're sometimes necessary. Discussed therein: ghosting, sub-tweeting, sucky boyfriends, recurring dreams about long-ago friends, expectation mismatches, friendship promiscuity, the dearth of pop culture representations of (lasting, non-comedic) friend breakups, and more. Friends of the Rosary,Today, August 28, the Catholic world celebrates the Memorial of St. Augustine (354-430), Bishop and Doctor of the Church, a great luminary in Christianity, the founder of the Augustinians, and the son of St. Monica. The tears of his mother, the sanctity of Milan's Bishop Ambrose, the book of St. Anthony the hermit, and the sacred Scriptures wrought his conversion — metanoia.Augustine's mother went to Milan with joy and witnessed her son's baptism on Easter night 387.Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, at the age of 41, saw how the human heart is created with a great abyss, since the earthly satisfactions are very insufficient. "Restless is the heart until it rests in God," he wrote.Augustine received the grace of being one of the most penetrating minds of ancient Christendom and the Church's most influential theologian, with an inexhaustible spirituality. His books, Confessions and The City of God, are a worthy memorial to his genius, a philosophy of history.Edifying are also his homilies, especially those on the psalms and on the Gospel of St. John.Augustine's episcopal life was filled with mighty battles against heretics, over all of whom he triumphed. His most illustrious victory was that over Pelagius, who denied the necessity of grace; from this encounter, he earned the surname "Doctor of grace."An emblem in his life is the burning heart, symbolizing the ardent love of God, which permeates all his writings.Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! Find it here: * Subscribe to the YouTube channel * Apple Podcasts (Listen and leave a review!) * Spotify (Listen and leave a star rating) * Any other podcasting app, pretty much * Follow on Instagram, TikTok, Bluesky, Twitter, and Threads. Here's more from Richard:How did we get here? The quick backstory. Alex and I had wondered for a while what a second show might look like—ideally, one that would be part of our broader universe without being hosted by us. We considered all kinds of ideas: the NFL, non-sports topics, and something centered on women's sports. But women's sports aren't a monolith. Would it be a generalist show? Would it cover softball, soccer, or basketball? As we brainstormed, we kept coming back to volleyball. We began looking more closely at a sport whose viewership was exploding, and it was easy to understand why. One night last December, I couldn't sleep and turned on highlights from the NCAA tournament. The matches were fast-paced, and the athleticism of the women on the court was remarkable. We also started learning about the emerging professional leagues, LOVB and MLV. Pretty much everyone we spoke with in the sports business world and college athletics agreed that volleyball has all the ingredients for a boom. But one point kept coming up: Beyond the matches themselves, the sport isn't covered in very many places. And there's no good reason for that.So we decided to find someone who could build a show and help fill the void. But who?Friends of Split Zone Duo recommended Erin Sorensen, whom subscribers may remember from her appearance on the feed for a Nebraska Dead Letters episode. In February, I called our mutual friend Amie Just to get Erin's contact information. When I explained what we were considering, Amie said, “Well, I'd be interested in that too.”That is the origin story of the show we are proud to debut this weekAmie, a true ball knower, came up with the name. “Six Zone Duo” refers to the six positions on the volleyball court. It connects naturally to Split Zone Duo while giving the new show a visual identity all its own. We could not be more excited to support Amie and Erin as they begin this journey. They'll be on-site for some of the biggest matches in the professional and college games, and they'll cover the sport nationally through a new, free weekly show. Expect analysis, interviews, and coverage that makes you a smarter volleyball fan.Volleyball deserves to be covered in depth. We trust Amie and Erin to do exactly that from Nebraska, the epicenter of the college game.As they get started, I have a few people to thank.Thank you to Erin and Amie for throwing themselves wholeheartedly into this project and already bringing so much passion, commentary, chemistry, and knowledge to it.Thank you to Alex for his continued partnership, for navigating the better part of eight months unlike anything we've experienced together before, and for trusting that we could make this happen even when the vision wasn't yet clear.Thank you to our presenting partners at Homefield for believing in us years ago, sticking with us throughout, and enthusiastically supporting this new project.Thank you to Hector, Tyson, Anthony, Warren, Austin, and the many others throughout the Split Zone Duo ecosystem who helped us get Six Zone Duo off the ground. Your creativity and counsel made this possible. And thank you to volleyball fans everywhere. We know you're out there, and we know you care. This is for you.Does this change anything for Split Zone Duo? We get to have fun as executive producers working with Erin and Amie. But otherwise, nope! We have big plans for this college football season and will share them [checks watch] next week, which is Week 1. This is a public episode. Part one (00:00 - 29:51) We discuss the different feel to this year's mixed doubles event, the way the doubles specialists all lost early, why Muchova and Mensik were worthy winners, and the notable chemistry in the Mirra Andreeva/Andrey Rublev and Flavio Cobollo/Belinda Bencic partnerships. Plus, we analyse how Alcaraz performed on his return alongside Serena Williams and what, if anything, it might mean for singles. Part two (29:52 - 45:43) We cover some of the results so far in qualifying as well as the news that Stan Wawrinka has been awarded a main draw wildcard after all. We will be live on the US Open stage reacting to the singles draws on Thursday 27th August at 1pm. Please come along if you're at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre that day during Fan Week! Following a historic $17 billion settlement reached between Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, and 47 states, social media platforms face landmark changes aimed at curbing tech addiction and protecting children from predatory features. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Attorney Mark Lanier join to discuss why the Kids Online Safety Act is needed to make these safety restrictions permanent across all platforms, how legal action succeeded where congressional action stalled, and what parents can do to protect their children from the dangers of social media. With the midterm elections growing closer, political candidates are leveraging high-profile endorsements. But in an era of hyper-polarization and fractured media channels, do these political stamps of approval truly change voters' minds, or do they simply reinforce pre-existing beliefs? Northeastern University Distinguished Professor of political science Costas Panagopoulos joins Fox's Alex Hogan to discuss the true weight of endorsements in modern American politics.
