Friends, our readings for this Third Sunday of Advent help us understand what to do while we wait for the Lord. An Advent spirituality of waiting is part of Christian life; our entire life, in a way, is waiting. We pray, “Come, Lord Jesus,” waiting for Christ to come back. Friends,This is the fourth episode* in a series called The Spirit-Era and Its Aftermaths in which I look at the way spiritual, technological, and occult flourishings at the turn of the 19th into 20th century are still with us today, and in fact, being echoed by our own time.This time, we're moving closer and closer to our present age, away from the Spirit-Era and into its aftermaths, tracking the ways that paranormal investigations, and paranormal phenomena themselves, changed as they emerged from that era.And I look into all of the with my guest, journalist ⁠BEN MACHELL⁠, author of the compulsively readable and also illuminating book ⁠Chasing the Dark: A 140-Year Investigation of Paranormal Activity⁠.One thing I've noticed again and again in researching and recording this series of episodes is that the so-called esoteric, the miraculous, the paranormal are all common.Whether it's a haunting, someone who is able to accomplish a feat of endurance, or the ways in which the world is simply very strange if we just look at it without taking it for granted: these are not aberrant occurrences. We have all experienced them, or heard about someone who has, or have shared stories about them, or have found some evidence for them or theorized about them.So when we tell stories about the paranormal, we are really just telling stories about the normal world.In Ben's book, he takes a long and thoughtful journey following the life and work of paranormal investigator Tony Cornell, a member of the Society for Psychical Research who appeared on TV, wrote books, and even was featured in a computer magazine for building a device to try to detect paranormal phenomenon. But unlike the performative ghost conjurers of the late 19th century or the fakirs in the early 20th, Tony (1924 - 2010) wasn't trying to create spectacular performance, and wasn't motivated purely by egotistical posturing as a debunker either. Rather he sought to understand what was really happening in people's lives.Through following Tony, Ben depicts a fascinating alternate history of the everyday: people simply living their lives, but then experiencing something they don't understand and can't explain, something that feels out of place to reality itself. Sometimes the unexplainable isn't the phenomena, but a feeling, a need to cry for help.So a picture begins to emerge - the paranormal as the presence of motivators - whether in our own behavior or in furniture and dishes flying through the air that we can't grasp, that we need help with.What a change from where the Spirit-Era started, with the frightening glamour of the table rapping spirits and the ectoplasmic bonds of spiritualist gatherings. And what a difference, also, from the spiritual thinkers who sought to create coherent theories. Here, the theories fell away in the face of spontaneous phenomena for which there were no experts. The Trump administration is deprioritizing domestic terrorism to serve a political agenda, scaling back investigations of far-Right extremism while redirecting DHS agents to immigration crackdowns. As programs tracking domestic extremism are dismantled and January 6 rioters are recast as "patriots," journalists find themselves on the frontlines — and their attackers are now people in power. Jordan Green is an investigative reporter for Raw Story whose coverage on far-Right extremism has spanned from Charlottesville to January 6. He is currently working on a book about militant accelerationism. Green also reported on a story we've covered extensively on the show: the attack on two power stations in Moore County, North Carolina. A correspondent for the Texas Observer, investigative journalist Steven Monacelli has been tracking extremism, disinformation, social movements, and the influence of dark money in politics. El viernes pasado Netflix anunció un acuerdo para adquirir las divisiones de estudios de cine y televisión y el servicio de streaming HBO Max de Warner Bros por 72.000 millones de dólares, un importe que asciende a los 82.700 millones si incluimos la deuda. La transacción, en efectivo y acciones, valora cada acción de Warner Bros en 27,75 dólares, es decir, por encima de lo que se están pagando en el mercado. Esta operación, aprobada ya por los consejos de ambas compañías, se concretará tras la separación de los activos de redes de cable de Warner (CNN, TNT y Discovery Channel) que conformarán una nueva sociedad llamada Discovery Global. El acuerdo se materializará en unos meses cuando haya pasado el filtro regulatorio. El anuncio es un capítulo más una intensa batalla de ofertas iniciada en septiembre de este año, cuando Paramount Global, presidida por David Ellison, el hijo del dueño de Oracle, Larry Ellison, se ofreció a comprar la compañía en su totalidad. Respaldado por fondos soberanos de Oriente Medio y con lazos con la administración Trump, Paramount ofrecía 30 dólares por acción. Su objetivo era fortalecer Paramount+ sumándole el amplio catálogo de Warner para competir con gigantes como Disney y Netflix. Ellison no se ha dado por vencido. Ayer mismo lanzó una OPA hostil para tentar de nuevo a los accionistas. Si el acuerdo sigue su curso Netflix, pionera del streaming, se fortalecerá apuntalando su liderazgo. Se queda con Warner Bros. Studios, DC Comics, y franquicias legendarias como Harry Potter, Batman, Superman, Juego de Tronos, Friends, The Big Bang Theory, Los Soprano, y clásicos como Casablanca y El Mago de Oz. HBO, fundada en 1972 como un canal premium de cable especializado en series y películas, aporta un archivo inmenso de más de 50 años de producción televisiva. Con presencia en todo el mundo, la fusión crearía una inmensa plataforma de video a la demanda ya que suma los 300 millones de suscriptores de Netflix a los 128 millones de HBO Max y Discovery+. Esto potenciará la retención de usuarios, permitirá reajustes de precios y afectará de lleno a la producción cinematográfica. El acuerdo plantea una serie de interrogantes regulatorios que podrían frustrar la operación. A eso mismo se agarra Paramount, que ha presionado intensamente en Washington acercándose al equipo de Trump. Para Netflix no está todo perdido. El regulador es independiente y ya en el pasado falló a favor de fusiones similares. El hecho es que en un mercado hipercompetitivo en el que Netflix se mantiene a la cabeza pero pierde terreno ante YouTube y Twitch (gratuitos y financiados con publicidad), esta fusión redefine el sector. En principio HBO Max se mantendrá, pero no sabemos durante cuanto tiempo y si seguirá explotando en exclusiva su catálogo. Para los consumidores se reduce el abanico de elección de plataforma y quizá suban los precios. En Hollywood, entretanto, asumen que la industria del entretenimiento es cosa ya de las grandes tecnológicas que poco a poco han terminado haciéndose dueñas de todo.
