The David Alliance  TDAgiantSlayer@Gmail.com Garth Heckman Accuser     Do you inhale or exhale when you putt?      THE ACCUSER - THE RATT      START WITH A WARNING… **If you do not understand how the accuser works you will be used by him and for his purpose without even knowing it.       Here is how it works:  People play the VICTIM - Why me, me oh my, waaa waaa waaa, poor me.     Then they turn into the VILLIAN - They attack people who they feel have it made, had it easy, they think they are arrogant simply because they are successful in some area of life.   They they become Victors and they fight on behalf of the other “VICTIMS”… Jeff Karow “I shudder thinking about the 11 year old little girl who could not get an abortion after being brutally raped.        The worst thing about being deceived is you do not know you are deceived. You operate in the mindset of fact, but its not fact at all. Remember when cigarettes did not cause cancer.          John 8   Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, 2 but early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. 3 As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd. 4 “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?” 6 They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. 7 They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” 8 Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust. 9 When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. 10 Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn't even one of them condemn you?” 11 “No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”                   The historical background of this passage—traditionally known as the Pericope Adulterae—is shaped by a clever political trap, a clash between competing legal systems, and a fascinating journey through ancient manuscripts. [1, 2, 3, 4]    peh-RIK-oh-pee - It's from Greek, meaning "a cutting out" or "a selected passage,” Adulterae = ah-dul-TAIR-eye   1. The Legal Trap: Roman Law vs. Jewish Law The religious leaders weren't just asking Jesus for a theological opinion; they were trying to force Him into a dangerous political and legal corner: [3, 5]      The Roman Constraint: Under Roman occupation, the Jewish authorities (the Sanhedrin) were stripped of their power to officially execute anyone. If Jesus agreed that the woman should be stoned to death, He would be encouraging an illegal vigilante execution, breaking Roman law and setting Himself up as a rebel leader against Rome. The Mosaic Constraint: If Jesus said she should go free, He would appear to be breaking the Law of Moses(Leviticus 20:10), which prescribed the death penalty for adultery. This would instantly ruin His credibility as a Rabbi among the Jewish people.    What is really going on here? Judging Jesus response - while they themselves do not hold themselves accountable to the same standard.    *they are not willing to make a call on this - but judging Jesus on his response.   People will call you out - all the while never talk about their own lack of character in the same manner.       Where was the man? The Mosaic law explicitly stated that both the man and the woman caught in adultery were to be put to death.   **Missing information: Accusers will never share the whole story.          OOOOO         2. The Location: The Temple Courts The text explicitly states this encounter took place in the Temple courts (John 8:2).     The sprawling courts of Herod's Temple were not dirt roads or sandy paths; they were grand, public plazas paved with massive, polished stone tiles. If there was loose dust blown onto the stones, Jesus could have been writing in the dirt. However, if He was pressing His finger directly against the smooth, hard flagstones of the Temple floor, a mere human finger would leave no mark. For Him to "engrave" or "write" a visible record there would require a miracle. [7, 8]    3. The Theological Parallel: The Finger of God By highlighting that Jesus wrote "with his finger," John uses a very rare phrasing that immediately points a Jewish reader back to the Old Testament. [7, 9]      In the entire Bible, there are only a few times where God is described as physically writing something. The most famous is Exodus 31:18: "He gave Moses the two tablets of the Testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God."     Jesus was silently saying: "You are trying to lecture Me on the Law? I am the one who carved it in stone in the first place." [1, 10]        OOOOOOO   The phrase "the finger of God" appears only a handful of times in the entire Bible. Each instance represents an irresistible, sovereign display of divine authority and judgment on those who try to play God.  When you connect these other passages to Jesus in the Temple courts, they paint a staggering picture of who He was claiming to be.     1. The Plagues of Egypt (Exodus 8:19)   The Context: During the ten plagues, Pharaoh's court sorcerers try to replicate the miracles Moses performs. When God turns the dust of the earth into swarms of gnats, the magicians fail to copy it. Terrified, they tell Pharaoh: "This is the finger of God."     2. The Ten Commandments (Exodus 31:18 & Deuteronomy 9:10)   The Context: God delivers the moral law to humanity not by dictating it to Moses, but by physically carving it Himself. The text notes the tablets were "written with the finger of God" on stone.   3. The Writing on the Wall (Daniel 5:5)   The Context: King Belshazzar of Babylon throws a blasphemous feast, drinking out of the sacred gold cups stolen from God's Temple. Suddenly, the fingers of a human hand appear and scratch a mysterious message into the plaster of the wall (Mene, Mene, Tekel, Parsin). Daniel interprets the writing: God has weighed the king's deeds, found him wanting, and his kingdom is finished.   4. Jesus Driving Out Demons (Luke 11:20)   The Context: Jesus is accused by His critics of using the power of Satan to cast out demons. He fires back: "But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you."         This is a great teaching device — pastors use this "voice of the accuser" framing often to expose the enemy's tactics. Here's a biblically-grounded list, treating it as an exposé of strategy rather than actually voicing that persona.   9-16-26 Start here for TDA 10 Ways the Accuser Attacks Faith 1. Rehearsing Your Past He whispers your worst moment on repeat — the affair, the addiction, the abortion, the thing you did at 19 — long after God has already forgiven it, hoping shame will convince you that grace has an expiration date. (Revelation 12:10 — he accuses "day and night") 2. Redefining God's Character "Did God really say...?" He doesn't usually deny God exists — he reframes who God is: distant, disappointed, keeping score. (Genesis 3:1) 3. Comparison He points you at someone else's marriage, ministry, body, or blessing, and lets envy do the rest of the work — convincing you God has been unfair specifically to you. 4. Isolation Disguised as Privacy He convinces you that no one can know the real struggle — that if your small group or spouse knew, they'd walk away. Isolation is where accusation grows unchecked, because it's never tested against truth spoken by someone else. 5. Weaponizing Other Believers' Words He takes a real hurt — something someone at church actually said or did — and repeats it in your mind until it becomes "this is who the church really is" or "this is who God really is." 6. Delayed Answers as Proof of Abandonment When prayer isn't answered on your timeline, he suggests silence means absence — that unanswered prayer is proof you're not really heard, rather than proof you're being asked to trust. (Compare Job's friends' theology vs. God's actual response in Job 38-42) 7. Perfectionism Disguised as Conviction Real conviction from the Spirit is specific and leads to repentance and freedom (2 Corinthians 7:10). Accusation is vague, global, and leads to paralysis — "you'll never get this right," "you're always like this." One brings you to the cross; the other just buries you. 8. Identity Theft He tries to get you to answer to a label — addict, failure, fraud, unworthy — instead of the one Scripture actually gives you: forgiven, adopted, righteous in Christ (Romans 8:1, Ephesians 1:5). Whoever answers the accusation has already accepted the label. 9. Success as a Trapdoor Ironically, he accuses through pride too — convincing gifted, "successful" believers (especially leaders) that their platform, growth, or following is proof of their own righteousness, setting up a fall through self-sufficiency rather than obvious sin. (1 Timothy 3:6 — the danger of being "puffed up with conceit") 10. Truth Without Grace This might be the subtlest one: he loves using real Scripture, real truth, real standards — just stripped of the gospel's grace and hope, so truth becomes crushing weight instead of a path to freedom. (This is actually what he tried on Jesus in the wilderness — quoting real Scripture, Matthew 4:6, but twisting its application.)   THREE  "Dirty Little Secrets" Worth Naming   1-  If there's one unifying tactic underneath all ten, it's this: the accuser rarely needs to invent new material — he just recycles truth without context, timing, or grace. Most of his accusations contain a kernel of something real (a real failure, a real hurt, a real Scripture) — which is exactly why they're so effective. Outright lies are easy to reject. Half-truths delivered at the right moment, with real pain attached, are much harder to resist.     2-  The second secret: he almost never announces himself. Nobody hears an accusing thought and thinks "that was Satan." It just feels like "being honest with myself," or "just being realistic," or "this is just how I am." The accusations feel like your own internal voice of reason — which is precisely what makes Revelation 12:11 significant: believers overcome him "by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony" — meaning the antidote isn't cleverness or willpower, it's actively speaking a different word over yourself than the one he's whispering.       3-  If a thought pushes you toward confession, prayer, and community — that's likely conviction. BUT WITH THAT - ACCUSATIONS MAKE YOU START TO MAKE EXCUSES FOR THAT WHICH YOU ARE BEING ACCUSED OF… THEN HE MAKES YOU FEEL GUILTY FOR THE EXCUSES YOU MADE.      The weapon against accusation isn't willpower or cleverness — it's actively speaking a different word over yourself than the one being whispered. Silence lets the accusation stand unchallenged. Testimony — speaking truth out loud, even just to yourself — interrupts it.       OOOOOOOO   Discernment: Today we have more information and faster information as ever before.  Anyone on social media can be portrayed as an expert, and any information can be presented as fact… But even worse- the absence of clarity creates gossip and presumption that grows into ignorance as fact.        The devil knows your name but calls you by your sin; God knows your sin but calls you by your name     Point 1: The Accuser Has a Title, and a Strategy     Satan's biblical title here isn't "destroyer" or "tempter" — it's accuser. **And Scripture consistently shows this strategy doesn't stay confined to accusing us before God — it plays out horizontally, between people, through gossip, slander, and offense.   Insight: If the enemy's title is "accuser," we should expect his most effective tactic to look like ordinary WORDS     Accusation is not in the power of the words… but the seeds they plant and the doubt they grow. See it's like this: The seeds of innuendo, doubt and insinuation cause the Spiritually immature to feed and water those accusations. **When I was a frosh in HS. The rumor of “ sexually molesting” a child in a cornfield grew into a huge ordeal.  It was started by a teacher's wife - who her and her husband hated me and my family.        Insight: Slander's power has never been the volume of the lie — it's the seed of doubt it plants about someone's character   ITS NOT THE AMOUNT OF ACCUSATIONS - ITS THE SPACE IT CREATES FOR DOUBT = LACK OF FAITH     Why is The Tongue a Fire — it only takes a spark. **a forest fire does not start with a forest fire… it starts with a spark.        So that we don't fall into the role of the accuser we should know this:  Love Covers, Corrupt Talk Corrodes — Two Competing Modes of Speech   Text: Ephesians 4:29-32 PAUL SAYS SPEAK WORDS OF GRACE   1 Peter 4:8 PETER SAYS COVER A BROTHER… HELP BRING THEM INTO HEALING AND WHOLENESS.     ****A truth without grace or healing is still an accusation.     Closing Challenge   Today wether you have been the source of accusation, or the target of it. will you let your mouth be an instrument of the kind of love that actually covers, forgives, and builds up?”   And if I am on the receiving end - Take time to thank God that you are forgiven and accusations only stand as a strong reminder of how great Gods grace is.

We have read God's Word. We have reflected on it. You have responded to it. Now we return to a place of rest.  Remember that this rest is not based on your works. It is not based on your response to God's Word. Send us Fan MailMary Smith, a teacher in the Minneapolis school district, and her attorney, Andrew Parker — who helped her get her job back — joined Liz Collin on her podcast. Smith spoke about getting caught up in a perfect storm of cancel culture, woke ideology, hypocrisy, and anti-white racism in the Minneapolis school district back in September of 2025. Smith accurately reported student misconduct, which included the student's use of the N-word. The student's behavior was not addressed by the school district. One day while Jesus is teaching, an expert in religious law asks a question – “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life.” Today we think of eternal life solely as life after death – heaven. But this word ‘eternal’ was used as a particular QUALITY of life that comes from God. Eternal life was a life that could be had living right here and right now when living God’s way. This man was asking Jesus, how do I get God’s quality of life? How do I live better? The answer was, “you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind – AND – Love your neighbor as yourself”. And then Jesus is asked an important question – WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR? It’s an honest question. If I’m going to follow Jesus’ instructions to love my neighbor as myself, I first need to understand who my neighbor is – then I need to understand what it would mean to love them as myself. And that’s where our next parable comes in. To explain who our neighbor is and how we are supposed to love them, Jesus tells the story of the Good Samaritan. Luke 10: 30-37: “A Jewish man was traveling from Jerusalem down to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road. “By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side. “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I'll pay you the next time I'm here.' “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked. The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.” Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.” So here we have a Jewish man who is attacked and left dying beside the road. The locals see him and walk by. They’re not only locals, but one is a priest and one is a temple assistant – they literally work for God – but they pass by the man in desperate need and don’t get involved. Then comes a “despised Samaritan”. To really understand this story, you have to understand why he would have been despised. A Samaritan was from the region of Samaria. Samaritans and Jews had a long history of hostility. They had deep religious and cultural differences, and there was tremendous prejudice and mistrust between them. They didn't associate with one another the way you might expect neighbors to. So when Jesus tells a story about a Jewish man in need and makes a Samaritan the one who stops to help him, there is serious shock factor. The most unlikely one was the neighbor. The outsider was the neighbor. The one who was different and disliked was the neighbor. The one kept at a distance was the neighbor. And the people who saw the need, crossed to the other side of the road, and kept walking? They were not acting like neighbors. Remember, the original question was, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus turns that question completely upside down. The question isn’t simply, “Who qualifies to receive my love?” The better question is, “Am I willing to become a neighbor to the person in front of me?” And that brings us right back to the command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” My friends, how many times are we failing to love our neighbors as ourselves? And is it because we don’t know how to first love ourselves? Nope. That’s cheap. Don’t settle for that answer. This isn’t a self-love message. Quite honestly, most of us are so totally selfish, so completely wrapped up in our own feelings and desires that we only think of ourselves. Here’s the truth – you know how to care about yourself. You know how to make sure you have food to eat. You know how to protect yourself. You know how to make sure you’re comfortable. You know how to avoid things that inconvenience you. We really don’t have a problem loving ourselves. We have a unique way of making everything about ourselves. We take the command of loving others as ourselves and twist it into a self-love lesson on putting ourselves first so we can then love others better. Don’t twist this. Jesus is simply telling us to take that same concern we naturally have for ourselves and extend it outward. Loving our neighbor as ourself is having the same concern for others as we do for ourselves. We care about us eating dinner – we should care about them eating dinner. We care about us being warm – we should care about them being warm. The Samaritan didn’t just notice the man’s need. He allowed the man’s need to interrupt his own life. That’s the part that gets me. The Samaritan was traveling this road because he had somewhere to go. This wasn’t a road you just took a joy walk on. He wasn’t out getting in his steps. He had things to do. He had his own life. And yet, when he saw someone hurting, he stopped. He got close. He got involved. He gave his time. He gave his resources. He gave his attention. He gave what he had. He’s the neighbor. He’s caring. He’s loving. Love isn’t always convenient. In fact, sometimes love is wildly inconvenient. Sometimes loving your neighbor means crossing the road instead of crossing your arms. It means noticing instead of ignoring. It means stopping instead of rushing. It means getting involved when it would be easier to mind your own business. Imagine the excuses the first 2 people had walking by this man laying on the side of the road bleeding to death. Maybe justified excuses. It was dangerous. They weren’t medically trained to save a life. They didn’t know how to help. Wow – how many times is that our leading excuse for not stopping, for not getting involved – I just don’t know how to help. What – girl, you don’t know how to just CARE about someone else? Jesus knows better. And sometimes the person God is asking you to love isn’t the person you naturally like. That’s the whole point of the Samaritan. Jesus wasn’t impressed by proximity to God. The priest was close to the temple. The temple assistant worked in the temple. They knew the Scriptures. They knew the commands. But when love required something of them, they walked away. The Samaritan may have been the last person anyone expected Jesus to put in the hero role, but he understood something the religious insiders had missed: Love doesn’t just know what is right. Love does what is right. We get so hung up on “who is my neighbor” – here’s the better question – “Who is God putting in front of me that I am tempted to walk past?” Who is hurting that I’ve learned not to notice? Who is difficult that I’ve decided isn’t my responsibility? Who is different from me that I’ve kept at a distance? Who is inconvenient? Who requires more of me than I’m comfortable giving? Love your neighbor. Even when it’s inconvenient. Even when they’re different. Even when they wouldn’t be your first choice. Even when you don’t get anything back. I know we can’t help everyone. I know our job isn’t to save everyone. I know sometimes it’s even dangerous to get involved. So how do we know? Really, on a practical level, how do we get started with this? I read this quote by Spurgeon, “When we see innocent people suffering as the result of the sin of others, our pity should be excited.” Maybe this is a good way to start getting involved. Is that an innocent person suffering as a result of the sin of someone else – STOP AND CARE ABOUT THEM. We don’t have to run after every need we see. However, when we see the innocent suffering, we are supposed to get involved! And what do we receive as a result? Remember where this story started? It started with the question of eternal life. The word ‘eternal’ here meaning God’s kind of life – a God QUALITY life. Here it is! Care about your neighbor – the innocent one in need right in front of you. You operate in the mindset of fact, but its not fact at all. Remember when cigarettes did not cause cancer.    John 8 Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, 2 but early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. 3 As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd. 4 “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?” 6 They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. 7 They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” 8 Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust. 9 When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. 10 Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn't even one of them condemn you?” 11 “No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”   The historical background of this passage—traditionally known as the Pericope Adulterae—is shaped by a clever political trap, a clash between competing legal systems, and a fascinating journey through ancient manuscripts. [1, 2, 3, 4]    peh-RIK-oh-pee - It's from Greek, meaning "a cutting out" or "a selected passage,” Adulterae = ah-dul-TAIR-eye   1. The Legal Trap: Roman Law vs. Jewish Law The religious leaders weren't just asking Jesus for a theological opinion; they were trying to force Him into a dangerous political and legal corner: [3, 5]    The Roman Constraint: Under Roman occupation, the Jewish authorities (the Sanhedrin) were stripped of their power to officially execute anyone. If Jesus agreed that the woman should be stoned to death, He would be encouraging an illegal vigilante execution, breaking Roman law and setting Himself up as a rebel leader against Rome. The Mosaic Constraint: If Jesus said she should go free, He would appear to be breaking the Law of Moses(Leviticus 20:10), which prescribed the death penalty for adultery. This would instantly ruin His credibility as a Rabbi among the Jewish people.    What is really going on here? Judging Jesus response - while they themselves do not hold themselves accountable to the same standard.    *they are not willing to make a call on this - but judging Jesus on his response.   People will call you out - all the while never talk about their own lack of character in the same manner.   Where was the man? The Mosaic law explicitly stated that both the man and the woman caught in adultery were to be put to death. **Missing information: Accusers will never share the whole story.    2. The Location: The Temple Courts The text explicitly states this encounter took place in the Temple courts (John 8:2).     The sprawling courts of Herod's Temple were not dirt roads or sandy paths; they were grand, public plazas paved with massive, polished stone tiles. If there was loose dust blown onto the stones, Jesus could have been writing in the dirt. However, if He was pressing His finger directly against the smooth, hard flagstones of the Temple floor, a mere human finger would leave no mark. For Him to "engrave" or "write" a visible record there would require a miracle. [7, 8]    3. The Theological Parallel: The Finger of God By highlighting that Jesus wrote "with his finger," John uses a very rare phrasing that immediately points a Jewish reader back to the Old Testament. [7, 9]      In the entire Bible, there are only a few times where God is described as physically writing something. The most famous is Exodus 31:18: "He gave Moses the two tablets of the Testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God."   Jesus was silently saying: "You are trying to lecture Me on the Law? I am the one who carved it in stone in the first place." [1, 10]    OOOOOOO   The phrase "the finger of God" appears only a handful of times in the entire Bible. Each instance represents an irresistible, sovereign display of divine authority and judgment on those who try to play God.  When you connect these other passages to Jesus in the Temple courts, they paint a staggering picture of who He was claiming to be.     1. The Plagues of Egypt (Exodus 8:19)   The Context: During the ten plagues, Pharaoh's court sorcerers try to replicate the miracles Moses performs. When God turns the dust of the earth into swarms of gnats, the magicians fail to copy it. Terrified, they tell Pharaoh: "This is the finger of God."   2. The Ten Commandments (Exodus 31:18 & Deuteronomy 9:10)   The Context: God delivers the moral law to humanity not by dictating it to Moses, but by physically carving it Himself. The text notes the tablets were "written with the finger of God" on stone.   3. The Writing on the Wall (Daniel 5:5)   The Context: King Belshazzar of Babylon throws a blasphemous feast, drinking out of the sacred gold cups stolen from God's Temple. Suddenly, the fingers of a human hand appear and scratch a mysterious message into the plaster of the wall (Mene, Mene, Tekel, Parsin). Daniel interprets the writing: God has weighed the king's deeds, found him wanting, and his kingdom is finished.   4. Jesus Driving Out Demons (Luke 11:20)   The Context: Jesus is accused by His critics of using the power of Satan to cast out demons. He fires back: "But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you."   This is a great teaching device — pastors use this "voice of the accuser" framing often to expose the enemy's tactics. Here's a biblically-grounded list, treating it as an exposé of strategy rather than actually voicing that persona.

Tuesday, 15 September 2026   Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' Matthew 22:37   “The ‘also Jesus', He said to him, ‘You will love – ‘Lord, the God, yours' in all the ‘heart, yours', and in all the ‘soul, yours', and in all the ‘cognition, yours'.'” (CG)   In the previous verse, the jurisprudent asked Jesus his question, which was, “Teacher, which-such commandment – greatest in the law?” In response, Matthew records Jesus' words, beginning with, “The ‘also Jesus', He said to him, ‘You will love – ‘Lord, the God, yours'.'”   In Mark, Jesus begins with Deuteronomy 6:4, saying, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.'”   That is not so much a command as a statement of mental preparation and factual information about the nature of God. Matthew doesn't include this but goes directly to answering the question. Jesus words are found in Deuteronomy 6:5, saying that Israel is to love the Lord their God.   Love in this sense is not an emotional love, but a volitional one that places the object of the love above all else. Involved in this is the idea of honor, giving priority to, etc. That continues to be seen in the next words, “in all the ‘heart, yours'.”   In Scripture, the heart is the center of one's being. Not the physical being where the heart pumps blood, but the desire-producing center. In this thought there is included the idea of cognition, moral preference, etc. It is the point of man that establishes the “who I am” of the person in nature. Every bit of this is to be directed to the Lord God. And more, He continues with, “and in all the ‘soul, yours'.”   This speaks of the person's distinct identity, which leads to the thought of his individual personality. Thus, this establishes the “who I am” in personal identity. Israel is told they are to take everything that establishes them as individuals and to love the Lord God from that perspective. Also, Jesus says, “and in all the ‘cognition, yours'.”   Here is a new word, dianoia, deep thought. It is from dia, through, and nous, the mind or intellect. Thus, it is more than just the mind, but what is going on in the mind. The word cognition suits quite well, although in Ephesians 2:3, it is rendered in the plural and would need explanation for it when using the word “cognitions”, as in mental machinations.   Everything that goes on in Israel's gray matter was to be directed in a volitional love toward the Lord God. Jesus went from the jurisprudence's general which-such question to a specific answer that covers all laws within the Law of Moses. This is because all laws are covered through the sense of obedience, which is then reflected in the heart, soul, and cognition.   Life application: One can think of these aspects of a person's page on a social media site. The heart is seen in the overall profile of the person. The Who I Am in my nature in the overall presentation is seen in the heart. The Who I Am in my personal identity and preferences is seen in the soul. The Who I Am as I reveal myself through interactions with others and how I present my worldview would be reflected in the cognition aspect.   Each part reflects something about me that can be evaluated. Someone may see my general profile and say, “I want to share with this person.” He may see my identity and preferences and say, “This guy likes what I like. We can share our traits together.” Another person may see my posts and say, “He is spot on in how he evaluates the political wrangling going on. I want to watch as he interacts with people on this level.”   God is evaluating all of us on these things at all times. He knows our makeup, what identifies us as individuals, and how we interact with Him. But He also knows our limitations. The law did not allow for limitations. If Israel thought about the words of Deuteronomy 6:5, they would have seen, right from the beginning, that what is demanded is impossible to meet.   Some people focus on the Lord way, way more than others. And yet, they still fall short of the perfection demanded by the law. To violate one precept of the law is to have failed to meet the requirements of the truth stated in Deuteronomy 6:5. This is why Jesus said in Matthew 11 –   “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30   The law was a burden no person could carry. It only brought condemnation, apart from its allowances for sin forgiveness as provided in the sacrificial system. Jesus came, however, to fulfill the law. In His fulfillment of it, that burden has been removed from us.   This is known as grace. This is why it is so important that we never mar grace by reinserting the law into our lives or by attempting to insert it into the lives of others. We are to trust in God's grace, knowing it is sufficient to cover all our failings.   Our effort, after salvation, is to do our best to honor God with deeds of righteousness apart from the Law of Moses. We are never to set aside God's grace. That can only lead us to pride in self and giving up on the grace we so desperately need from moment to moment throughout our lives.   Lord God, thank You for the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Thank You. May we never attempt to override what He has done, but to rest in His fulfillment of the Law of Moses. May our deeds of righteousness be in honor of Jesus from this day forward. Amen.

Monday, 14 September 2026   “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Matthew 22:36   “Teacher, which-such commandment – greatest in the law?” (CG)   In the previous verse, a jurisprudent was introduced ready to ask a question of Jesus. He now asks what is on his mind, beginning with, “Teacher, which-such commandment.”   The question is formed around an individualizing interrogative. It was introduced in Matthew 19:18. It is used in asking something like what sort of. It can be based on the words where, which, what, etc. In this case, the question is about the commandments.   There are different types of commandments in the law. His choice of wording appears to mean he wants to know which sort of them is the most important. Maybe he is curious if it is the Levitical type. But they can be divided into moral, ceremonial, civil, etc.   There are positive commandments and negative commandments. There are commandments directed to the nation as a whole and then those directed to individuals. These and other such types of commandments are probably what this jurisprudent is asking about. Of them, he asks which-such are “greatest in the law?”   The question itself is basic, but the answer to it will have to be carefully considered. This does not, however, appear to be a trap. There is no hint of an argument after Jesus gives His response. Further, the person who interacts with Jesus, as noted in Mark 12, not only agrees with His answer, but He will also give more words to support Jesus' response.   Vincent's Word Studies nicely evaluates the intent of this jurisprudent's question –   “The A. V. and Rev. alike miss the point of this question, which is: which kind of command is great in the law? That is, what kind of a commandment must it be to constitute it a great one? Not, which commandment is greatest as compared with the others? The scribes declared that there were 248 affirmative precepts, as many as the members of the human body; and 365 negative precepts, as many as the days in the year; the total being 613, the number of letters in the Decalogue. Of these they called some light and some heavy. Some thought that the law about the fringes on the garments was the greatest; some that the omission of washings was as bad as homicide; some that the third commandment was the greatest. It was in view of this kind of distinction that the scribe asked the question; not as desiring a declaration as to which commandment was greatest, but as wanting to know the principle upon which a commandment was to be regarded as a great commandment.”   Life application: In April 1847, the false prophetess Ellen G. White claimed to have had a vision where she supposedly saw the Ten Commandments inside the Ark of the Covenant. She claimed that the first four commandments shone more brightly than the other six but that there was a halo of glory around the fourth commandment.   As such, the Seventh-day Adventists view the fourth commandment as a vital seal of God's authority and a memorial of creation. They see it as a test of loyalty to God in the end times, linking the Creator's authority directly to the obligation to rest and worship on the seventh day.   There are so many things wrong about the teachings of the Seventh-Day Adventists that going point by point over her false visions and their false teachings would take books of information. It is an exercise in futility.   Knowing what is true is really all that is necessary to form proper doctrine in this matter. Paul writes about observing days in Romans 14, Colossians 2, and elsewhere. It is clear from the book of Acts that Sunday, not Saturday, was the day when most gathered.   Hebrews 4 explains the Sabbath and what it meant for the Jewish people. A summary thought concerning the Sabbath is found in Hebrews 4:3, saying, “For we who have believed do enter that rest.”   The Sabbath was given as a type or shadow of the good things to come in Christ. Christ came. He fulfilled those types and shadows. He also fulfilled the Law of Moses. Therefore, the Sabbath is fulfilled in both type and in law.   If observing the Sabbath is a test of loyalty and an obligation, then salvation is not by grace through faith. Sabbath observance negates the principal point of the gospel. As noted, knowing what is right is all that is necessary to know what is wrong.   We don't need to go through pages of false writings from a false prophetess to know that the overall doctrine of the SDA church is wrong. We just need to know what the Bible says and adhere to its precepts accordingly. Keep reading the Bible, but do so from the overall understanding that salvation is by grace through faith.   If something you have been taught deviates from that basic premise, you can chuck it in the garbage.   Lord God, may we not get duped into nutty doctrines that are formed in the delusional minds of people for whatever perverse agenda they may have in mind. Help us to reasonably and responsibly consider Your word at all times. To Your glory, we pray. Amen.
