In this eye-opening conversation and rum tasting with Global Rum Ambassador Ian Burrell, some of the topics we discuss include: How Ian entered the rum world as a bartender, which led to several career transformations as a brand and category ambassador, then the creator of UK Rumfest, and now as one of the cofounders of a blossoming rum brand. The fascinating life of Olaudah Equiano, slave-turned-entrepreneur-turned-freedom-fighter-and-philanthropist. He, of course, is the namesake of Equiano rum and the inspiration for both its products and its philanthropic mission. How rum from the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean is blended with meticulously distilled and aged spirits from Barbados to create the unique flavor profile and multicultural DNA of Equiano's flagship product and its brand new light rum, which I had the privilege of tasting before it even hit shelves here in the US. We discuss the impact of colonialism and geographic indications on today's rum landscape We explore the exciting emergence of multi-style or multi-island rum blends, the difference between “nursing” and “doctoring” a drink, how Ian plans to convert Barack Obama into a rum drinker, and much, much more.

My guest this week is Singer, Entertainer and Reiki Master Ian Geast, who I have to share is one of my very favourite human beings. Ian has been an entertainer for many decades. He's what I would call an all rounder because he can do his magic anywhere, clubs, bars, private parties, restaurants, festivals, corporate events etc and he communicates creatively in the swing/crooner style. Ian loves his 50's, 60's, 70's music, some country music and he performs a tribute to the music of Cliff Richard. Today we cover a variety of topics around voice, what it is to sing and entertain others and how we can enjoy being in the moment together. Ian has a wonderful view of life and helping others see things from different perspectives to help nurture love and a positive mindset, so you too can believe you CAN achieve whatever you want to. Ian Austin's under-cover cop Dan Calder is a man with a tendency for trouble – either creating it or falling into it… the protagonist in a crime series that's been favorably compared to international names like John Grisham and Ian Rankin. Hi there I'm your host Jenny Wheeler and today Ian talks about why he doesn't see Dan as a “hero”, describes how he became a full-time writer after a long and successful career as a police officer, and the high value he places on reader feedback. Six things you'll learn from this Joys of Binge Reading episode: How Ian found purpose in the police An Englishman at home in NZHis troublesome protagonistGrabbing opportunities with both handsLike L&P - 'World famous in New Zealand'Famous guests he'd invite for dinner Where to find Ian Austin: Website: https://www.ianaustin.org/ Facebook: @ianaustinauthor Twitter: @ianaustinauthor What follows is a "near as" transcript of our conversation, not word for word but pretty close to it, with links to important mentions. Jenny: But now, here's Ian. . Hello there Ian and welcome to the show, it's great to have you with us. Ian Austin: Hi, Jenny. Thanks for having me. Ian Austin: Undercover policeman-turned crime author Jenny Wheeler: This time we're not that far apart. You're just one side of Auckland and I am on the other side of Auckland, which is rather unusual. So you're based in New Zealand, you're a former police officer, turned full time author and I'm thinking that maybe you harbored secret hopes of writing long before you actually got into it. What made you decide to swap chasing crims for writing. Swapping chasing crims for writing Ian Austin: The truth is probably exactly the opposite. I had no qualifications from school whatsoever. I think I was always seen as being the dunce at school, and to be honest, I didn't do an awful lot to persuade people otherwise. It was only when I joined the police, that I talk about as being my salvation, because it really was. In the police I learned maybe I'm not quite as silly as people thought I was, and I actually had this certain set of skills for writing and formulating plans, making statements, recording interviews - that kind of thing - that was a big part of that. When I came to realize over a period of time that I have these abilities, I started to enjoy the writing side a lot more of what I was doing, designing lesson plans for National Crime Squad and things like that. And then the idea to write a story came and with the career that I had all this research material. 'Naivety and ignorance' the key That old adage that people talk about, "everyone's got a story inside them?" It happens to be true with me and so for a number of years I wanted to write a book and I was lucky enough to be able to do so. Jenny Wheeler: I looked up online to see how many cops had become novelists, and funnily enough, there aren't as many as there are lawyers. I don't know if that's a surprise, but Joseph Wambaugh is one of them. There are a number of others whose names are slightly less well known. Have you networked with any of the other cops turned writers? Ian Austin: To be honest, I haven't. I think it comes down basically to a lot of naivety and ignorance on my part. Before I started writing, I didn't do any research into what I should do or talk to other people about it. I just sat down at a laptop one day and started to write and learned as I went along, which is how basically I learned most things. Standing in good company Since I've been writing, I've met a number of New Zealand policemen that are also writers. Some of them are still in the job and write under Nom de plumes. Others have left the job and are now writing like I do. Jenny Wheeler: Oh, great. That's wonderful. So you've published so far a trilogy of highly praised crime novels. Reviewers compare you to big names like John Grisham and Ian Rankin.

In this episode, hear from Ian Crosby as he takes us through the evolution of Bench and how he and his team have realized the success they have. For Ian, Bench isn’t about a centrally planned system, it is an economy with different teams that interact together and have increased responsibility. Instead of departments, the company runs more like a collection of businesses. Ian shares more about the company’s ‘default open’ principle and how everything that isn’t confidential can be shared amongst the teams to build a greater sense of trust and inclusion. My favourite part though? How Ian looks the longer-term strategy for the company. His approach to this challenging subject area is refreshingly playful and light-hearted, but cuttingly effective and focussed… you’ll laugh lots and learn hard. Ian’s signature programme, the “Be Free Weight Loss” method is designed to uncover hidden habits that many people are entirely unaware of and leave no stone unturned in removing the emotional obstacles and trip hazards that all too often derail the weight loss journey. Having tried (and failed) at almost every commercial diet over many years, he finally ‘got it’, shifted 100lbs of weight and kept it off. Ian isn’t just a theorist, he delivers from hardcore experience, walks his talk and lives his principles every day. AND Dr Annie Wright DC trained as a Chiropractor in 2001 after a first career as an officer in the Intelligence Corps, British Army. She sustained a knee injury whilst serving; although this did not result in a medical discharge Annie was no longer able to do many of the physical activities any “normal” young adult would expect to do. This was followed by a “brown-out” in 2006 when Annie had pleurisy and pneumonia three times in six months. Through the diverse areas of her Chiropractic medical knowledge and a personal interest in the mechanisms of both physical and mental injury; Annie set about rehabilitating her knee and regaining health. She then brought together these varied skills to help her clients overcome their injuries. Such was the effect of this holistic approach of lifestyle, stress management, nutrition, plus varied application of her bio-mechanical knowledge to help her clients overcome their injuries that an improvement in their physical and mental health resulted and, thus as one client said: “I gave people back their lives”. Through helping people and herself, Annie realised that it is not only the mechanics of getting better that was important but equally or more importantly overcoming our limiting beliefs, or perceptions which may otherwise stop us. As a result, Annie now offers a coaching service that helps people with a wide range of health related issues including fatigue, burn out, diabetes, high blood pressure, autoimmune disease and other non-communicable diseases. It is delivered from the perspective of someone who has herself made that journey. In this episode, we talk about How Annie got her life and health back How Ian lost A LOT of weight without dieting How to make sustainab --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/explode/message
Renegade Thinkers Unite: #2 Podcast for CMOs & B2B Marketers
You’ve heard it said, “be the big fish in a small pond.” But have you ever considered being the big fish in many small ponds? Sage Intacct, a provider of cloud financial management, is doing just that. To pull this off, Sage Intacct first defines different “micro-verticals” by breaking down larger marketplaces, like manufacturing, into more granular categories, like toys, planes, and cars. Following that, they become experts in the field, and begin producing valuable, category-specific sales materials and insights. Vice President and Head of Marketing, Ian Howells, chats with Drew on this episode about how his employees get to know these different markets—or ponds if you will—and the rigorous process of becoming the biggest fish in each. Be sure to join in! Subscribe on Apple Podcasts- Stitcher - or Podsearch What You’ll Learn 1% penetration to a desired goal - how to get started in micro-targeting Ian shares the process of penetrating a new market. Sage Intacct works hard to reach out to multiple companies to conduct interviews and research. It is Sage's job to understand this customer and understand what is going on. What are the pains of the customer? Are there similarities between this company and others Sage Intacct work with? Ian's interviewers must gain understanding and draw correlations between companies in the same micro-target. This interview process gives understanding into a micro-vertical. The more companies you interview, the more you know about this subset of the market: associations, key influences, key applications... All of this information affects positioning and messaging for that micro-vertical. How to know you have achieved success in a micro-vertical Oftentimes, companies believe they have achieved success in a micro-vertical too soon. Ian explains that you have achieved success in a current micro-vertical, and should approach another, when you have at least 20 clients with the same patterns and pains, and you can predict what the client will say. This shows you understand the current micro-vertical, and you are in a position to begin learning about a new one. The importance of website content and collecting data Sage Intacct’s website overtly lists its competition. It compares what it offers to various companies. Ian explains that you must over communicate what your company does and why it is the best. By comparing Sage Intacct’s products to others, clients can quickly see why Sage is different and the best for them. On several demo videos, Sage Intacct stops the video to collect viewer information. This is important for several different reasons. Collecting information allows Sage to know what industry this person is from. When the video resumes, the viewer gets personalized content. If you’re from a nonprofit, you get specific messaging. By pausing the demo, Sage is also able to collect data from potential clients and know how interested the viewer really is. In this episode I speak with Ian Brodie about his failures as a salesperson. He started off as a business consultant and was great at helping his clients with their strategies and making changes. But to progress in his company he had to sell. And that’s where the problems started. He didn’t like being a salesperson and everything with his clients changed. He was almost fired. Fortunately, he accidentally discovered a way to get in front of prospects that repeatedly worked. And that’s what we talk about. What Ian and I discuss in this show: Ian’s successful background in consulting. Why he couldn’t “be” a salesperson. What happened when his clients stopped taking his calls. Why he feared what people thought about him and how it stopped him from making calls. How people think about salespeople, how he thinks about salespeople, and how that label made him feel less credible. Why Ian didn’t want to be seen as someone out to just take people’s money (because he wasn’t). How his fears almost got him fired. How he used research material from his company to start making sales. How he was able to provide value before asking for a sale, and started getting phone calls returned, and how you can do this too. Why he wasn’t able to be like the other sales people. How he used case studies to open doors to appointments and close more sales. How Ian discovered what areas he was good at, how he learned to focus on those, and how he refined it to work best. How you can structure your client meetings to go from providing value to transitioning into the sale. What Ian did to get clients to relax for his sales calls. How the same principles Ian used in face-to-face sales can be applied in online sales… but you don’t have to talk with people one-on-one (if you don’t want). Why Ian asks, “How do you scale without building a large team?” And how he’s working on that for himself, and you. Why he wished he started his own business earlier. Why he couldn’t start his own business until he knew others who did. Enjoy the show: FtL 35: How Failing At Sales Taught Ian Brodie How To Sell More Effectively

I first met today's podcast guest at a health conference four years ago. I happened to be sitting across the dinner table from him, and watched as he pulled out the mysterious leather satchel that I'd seen him carrying all weekend long. He opened the satchel to reveal tiny bottles of black oil, dropper bottles full of dark, green algae-like goo, mineral salts, and all kinds of other strange substances which he proceeded to use to "dress-up" his dinner. Later, I learned his name - Ian Clark - and invited him on my podcast to talk about that green algae goo, which turned out to be marine phytoplankton. I also learned that back in 2004, at the age of 46, when he was hit with a series of life threatening health issues, obesity, and a prediction from physicians that he only had about two years left to live, Ian refused to accept life’s traditional circumstances and decided to pursue more natural methods of restoring perfect health. Ian began traveling all over the world to discover strange, new health products while developing relationships with top labs and researchers in the fields of natural healing. Now operating out of a farm in Canada with his five sons and the support of an entire team of innovators at , his company has become a significant manufacturer of unique products like magnesium spray, black seed oil, marine phytoplankton and much more. In today's podcast with Ian, you'll discover: -The genetic illness that nearly killed Ian back in 2004 and led to his journey of interest in natural healing... -How you can personally "equip" your body to deal with mold and fungus (and the shocking link between mold, fungus and cancer)... -How Ian has created his own micro-universe to heal his body... -One specific pose you can hold for 30 minutes a day for two weeks to "reboot" your autonomic nervous system... -The small exercise machine that Ian swears by and keeps in both his home and his office... -A new form of fasting called "dry fasting"... -What Ian uses as a "smart drug" to stay hyper-awake and alert... -The reason Ian sprays his entire abdomen with magnesium prior to bed at night... -Why Ian travels everywhere with a black leather bag, and what he keeps in it... -And much more!
