This Mehfil explores the exciting world of South Asian translation especially the regional and vernacular literature that has lately been garnering international attention and winning prestigious awards. In Translating South Asia, host Amrita Ghosh talks to two renowned translators from the neighboring countries of India and Bangladesh. The conversation is not only about translations from Bengali to English but also the reverse, and how it plays out in the publishing world in the subcontinent. Arunava Sinha and Shabnam Nadiya take us on their journey into how they began translating and how it became a vocation. They speak about their first books of translation and their initial experiences and challenges in the process. They also discuss how the translation scene has changed writing, publishing and readership on the Subcontinent, spaces that were initially reserved for Anglophone works. Nadiya talks about her latest translation of Shaheen Akhtar's rich novel, Shokhi Rongomela into Beloved Rongomela and the challenges she faced, along with some of the decisions she made during the intricate process of creating a Bengali worldview for the Anglophone readership. Ghosh talks to Sinha about his translation of the epic novel Dozakhnama by Rabisankar Bal and the challenges of translating an original consisting of multiple language presences such as Urdu and Bengali. In a rich conversation, the writers also discuss the space of politics within translation, the publishing industry and the importance and the limits of adhering to a political position within a work. The episode ends with Ghosh putting both writers to a quick translation test of the word and concept of “Mehfil!” Shabnam Nadiya is a Bangladeshi writer and translator based in California. A graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, she was awarded the Steinbeck Fellowship (2019); a PEN/Heim Translation Grant (2020); and the 2019 Himal Southasian Short Story Prize. The relationship between England and India is a deep and complex one. In this episode the academic and author of Courting India, Nandini Das, takes us back to a significant moment at the very beginning of this relationship. She tells us all about Sir Thomas Roe, the courtier who led the first English embassy to India. Roe's mission was an exciting and a daunting one. Stories about the riches of India had long been exchanged in England and, when he stepped ashore in Surat in 1615, he was able to see the might of the great Mughal Empire for himself. In contrast, England was regarded by many as an island of little consequence. But, as Das explains, there was one figure that Roe was desperate to impress. This was the richest man in the world, the fourth Mughal emperor, Jahangir. In early 1616, after arriving in Ajmer, he would get his chance. Nandini Das is professor of Early Modern Literature and Culture in the English faculty at the University of Oxford. Brought up in India, she was educated at the Jadavpur University in Kolkata, before moving to England for further study. Her book, Courting India: England, Mughal India and the Origins of Empire is out this week. For more, as ever, visit our website: tttpodcast.com. Kautilya lived in India from 375 to 283 BC. He ranks alongside Sun Tzu as one of the great early sages who wrote about the relations between polities, and thus also about wars between them. Kaushik Roy, Guru Nanak Chair Professor at Jadavpur University, India, joins Beatrice and Paul to discuss his work. Kautilya's approach to strategy included an understanding of inter-polity relations that assumed that one's ‘enemy's rear-enemy' would be a good ally against the shared enemy: in other words, ‘make friends with your enemy's enemy'. Meanwhile, insurgents would get support from other polities, and aggressors could be just, or just greedy. He thus paired ‘realist' views with moral elements. Also referred to as Chanakya or Vishnugupta, Kautilya was adviser to two successive emperors of the Mauryan Empire in India. He was thus not only a theoretician but also had considerable political influence. His main body of work is the Arthashastra, an ancient Sanskrit treatise on statecraft, political science, economic policy and military strategy. While one is hard-pushed to argue that he had a lasting influence on the following millennia of political or strategic thinking in India, his views are worth pondering, as they cast fresh light on strategy and on relations between states. Kaushik Roy is Guru Nanak Chair Professor in the Department of History, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India and a Global Fellow at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), Norway. He obtained his PhD from the Centre for Historical Studies, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Climate change is becoming a constant part of our lives. The tea gardens of West Bengal are not spared from it. West Bengal's Dooars region contributes around 25% of the nation's tea yield. Change in weather patterns such as drought, and floods have a massive impact on tea-producing areas. With climate change reducing the quality of tea yield, it is becoming difficult to get a higher price for the crops at auctions. Hence, farmers are at the receiving end of it. In this podcast, Piyashee Mallick talks about how climate change plays an important role in agricultural production in India, about climatic conditions that lead to the reduction of tea yield and the impact that it has. She also discusses if farmers should follow some different cropping patterns due to climate change in the region. Mallick is a research scholar at Jadavpur University, West Bengal. This talk takes up Vedānta, Yogācāra Buddhism, Nyāya, Cārvāka, and other classical views, the debate between Naiyāyikas and Buddhists in particular. Bio: Stephen Phillips is professor emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin and has been visiting professor of philosophy at the University of Hawaii and Jadavpur University. Author of ten books, including Aurobindo's Philosophy of Brahman (Brill 1984), Classical Indian Metaphysics, “Refutations” of Realism and the Emergence of “New Logic” (Open Court 1995 and Motilal Banarsidass 1998), and Yoga, Karma, and Rebirth: A Brief History and Philosophy (Columbia 2009), named by Choice an “Outstanding Academic Title,” he has more recently written Classical Indian Epistemology: The Knowledge Sources of the Nyāya School (Routledge 2012), which presents classical Indian views in terminology suited for philosophy professionals. With Matthew Dasti, he published The Nyāya-sūtra: Selections with Early Commentaries (Hackett 2017), and with Dasti and Nirmalya Guha, a short text, God and the World's Arrangement: Vedānta and Nyāya Philosophy of Religion (Hackett 2021). Phillips teamed with N. S. Ramanuja Tatacharya to translate the perception chapter of the monumental fourteenth-century Tattva-cintā-maṇi, “(Wish-fulfilling), Jewel of Reflection on the Truth about Epistemology,” by Gaṅgeśa (American Institute of Buddhist Studies 2004 and Motilal Banarsidass 2008), in 750 pages. In three volumes, about 2000 pages, a translation of the entire text has now been published by Bloomsbury (2020) in a solo-authored set including much historical and philosophic exegesis. In this interview, Dr. Nader sits down with Dr. Anirban Bandyopadhyay to discuss the nature of consciousness and microtubule vibrations. From Dr. Bandyopadhyay's perspective, treating the brain with microtubule vibrations could benefit a host of mental, neurological, and cognitive conditions. Microtubule quantum vibrations appear to interfere and produce much slower EEG "beat frequencies" says Dr. Bandyopadhyay, and despite a century of clinical use the underlying origins of EEG rhythms have remained a mystery. This is episode #7 of the podcast and it's Thursday, the 9th of December 2021. In today's show, I am talking to Mr. Sayantan Ghosh, Assistant Professor of Sociology at the Hiralal Mazumdar Memorial College for Women, affiliated with West Bengal State University. He is currently involved in research in the Department of Sociology at Jadavpur University in Kolkata. Mr. Ghosh explores the Sociology of Smell, the study of smell and society, literature and society, Indian social thinkers, philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore, study of religion and society. He is a passionate researcher of the sense of smell, hoping for a better future (or, as he likes to say), more fragrant future of humanity. He believes that we, as human beings, depend much more on our senses than we think, particularly on our sense of smell - as we judge and make decisions based on smell. It is not so much about knowing aspects of the external world, as it is about knowing one's own self. In our discussion, we touch on many important aspects such as logic and sensations in the Western vs. the Indian traditions, smell and language, smell and its connection to structural inequalities and urban planning, as well as sense impressions as they contribute to perception in people with sensory impairment. We conclude hoping for a multi-sensory future, addressing ways (including technological ones) to bring more awareness to our senses, especially to the sense of smell. Here is the show.Show Notes:- The sense of smell: Western view. vs.  Indian traditions (Vyasa and Kalidasa): the separation b/w logic and intellect, on one side, and emotion, feeling and sensation on the other.- ‘Indryas': the gate of knowledge- Smell and language: olfactory vocabulary of English and Bengala- The importance of the senses in everyday life (in our occupations, the way we move around, what we eat, and in our intimate moments): How do we interact with different smellscapes and how are these shaped by culture? (i.e., as in Indian culture: food/spices, incenses in temples, etc.)- The sense of smell and its connection to structural inequalities: the ‘unsmellables'- Smell and the city: urban planning as well as olfactory planning- Sense impressions and their contribution to perception (e.g., in people with visual impairment, etc.)- The hope for a multi-sensory future: self-awareness and the senses, and ways (including technological ones) to bring more awareness to our senses, especially to the sense of smellLinks:Professor Ghosh can be reached through his LinkedIn account (https://www.linkedin.com/in/sayantan-ghosh-66106a228/) and his academic webpage (https://hmmcollege.ac.in/index.php/Frontend/faculty?id=22)

As the West Bengal elections come to a close, we look back at one of the most remarkable events in the past few months, the birth of the Indian Secular Front. Led by a Furfura Sharif cleric Abbas Siddiqui, it protests the lack of development of oppressed castes and tribes and minority religions in the state. It represents these varied backgrounds among its party leadership and the candidates fielded this election.  But is there a need for Muslim, Dalit, Adivasi unity in West Bengal? In this episode, our reporter Suryatapa Mukherjee speaks to Abdul Matin, an Assistant Professor at the Department of International Relations and Political Science in Jadavpur University of Kolkata.  Matin explains how since Independence, West Bengal has increasingly moved away from a political discourse based on caste to one based on religion. He says this brand of “communal politics” benefits both the Trinamool and the BJP. West Bengal ministers holding important portfolios across Congress, Left Front and Trinamool rule have been exclusively upper caste despite upper castes making up only 13% of the population in the state.  We also discuss the prospects of the Indian Secular Front in this election before results are announced on May 2. How to build a super career in Marketing- Indranil Chakraborty- IIM Lucknow | Unilever | Storyworks Career Conversation with Indranil Chakraborty (IC) -- an alumnus of Jadavpur University and IIM Lucknow who has spent ~20 yrs in marketing roles at Unilever , TTSL, Mahindra Resorts. Later he became an Entrepreneur @ Storyworks In this free wheeling discussion, we discuss about his schooling at St Edmund Shillong, key takeaways in terms of value based education, English speaking skills, an outgoing personality. Then we ask why he opted for the Engineering+MBA combination as the 'hot formula' for success - was it as popular in the 80s as much as its today. He said that it was a lot of sequential events, thus a lot of luck and serendipity played its role We also touched upon his views on having work experience before MBA We move to how his marketing & sales experiences were at HUL across locations like Nepal, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata etc. We asked about whether brand management is as glamourous as it sounds from the outside. He demystifies a lot of concepts surrounding the field of Marketing. Also talks about the importance of having a good first boss who can mentor you well, as much as an employer brand and pay. But he realizes that that may not always be possible, but if possible, one must do due diligence. Also, he explained why marketing companies are willing to pay top dollar for graduates from the IIMs, less to do with whats actually taught there and more to do with the character traits one exhibits as he/she reaches there and the filtration process. He shared his experiences trying to set up the Build a Bear brand https://www.buildabear.com/ as a franchisee in India. He then shared how the shift from a Lux/Lakme and Breeze to prepaid SIMs and holiday experiences were, from a marketing standpoint. Then he explained how the transition to Storyworks happened, a lot of luck and serendipity played its role, the initial resistances, He then shared his views on whats better - Job or Entrepreneurship, his take on the recent startup funding scenario ; how the ones that are going to solve unaddressed problems will survive. He also wondered whether the path to profitability being secondary as the focus is on building companies for IPOs/valuation instead of for consumers. Recently we had the WorldMentalHealthDay and he also was kind enough to share his experience with overcoming bipolar disorder during his HUL days, how the company was very supportive and how the stigma surrounding mental health must be replaced by the societal realization that seeking external help for mental health issues ( chemical imbalances) are as normal as someone having a doctor being consulted for a toothache or an injury. The usual approach of people saying 'Hey come one, cheer up, lets go for a movie just doesnt work' He spoke about his views on Youth and their career aspirations, acknowledging that the current generation is more informed as well as ambitious. But also has to overcome a sense of entitlement and also realise that growth comes at its own pace automatically once you keep working hard. Consider a scenario where a group of agents, each receiving partially informative private signals, aim to learn the true underlying state of the world that explains their collective observations. These agents might represent a group of individuals interacting over a social network, a team of autonomous robots tasked with detection, or even a network of processors trying to collectively solve a statistical inference problem. To enable such agents to identify the truth from a finite set of hypotheses, we propose a distributed learning rule that differs fundamentally from existing approaches, in that it does not employ any form of ``belief-averaging". Instead, agents update their beliefs based on a min-rule. Under standard assumptions on the observation model and the network structure, we establish that each agent learns the truth asymptotically almost surely. As our main contribution, we prove that with probability 1, each false hypothesis is ruled out by every agent exponentially fast, at a network-independent rate that strictly improves upon existing rates. We then consider a scenario where certain agents do not behave as expected, and deliberately try to spread misinformation. Capturing such misbehavior via the Byzantine adversary model, we develop a computationally-efficient variant of our learning rule that provably allows every regular agent to learn the truth exponentially fast with probability 1. About the speaker: Aritra Mitra received the B.E. degree from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India, and the M.Tech. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India, in 2013 and 2015, respectively, both in electrical engineering. He is currently working toward the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, USA. His current research interests include the design of distributed algorithms for estimation, inference and learning; networked control systems; and secure control. He was a recipient of the University Gold Medal at Jadavpur University and the Academic Excellence Award at IIT Kanpur.

The New Elizabethans: Amartya Sen the Nobel-winning laureate known as the Mother Theresa of economics for his work understanding and fighting the causes of poverty. Best known for his work on the causes of famine, his book Poverty and Famines: An Essay on Entitlement and Deprivation, argued that famine occurs not only from a lack of food, but from inequalities built into mechanisms for distributing food. Sen also helped to create the United Nations Human Development Index which is used to rank countries by standard of living or quality of life. Now working as Professor of Economics and Philosophy at Harvard University, he began at the tender age of twenty-three by setting up a new economics department at Jadavpur University in Calcutta, but he has also held professorships at Delhi University, the London School of Economics and the University of Oxford. When in 1998 he was appointed Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, he became the first Asian academic to head an Oxbridge college. In the same year he received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his work in welfare economics. The New Elizabethans have been chosen by a panel of leading historians, chaired by Lord (Tony) Hall, Chief Executive of London's Royal Opera House. The panellists were Dominic Sandbrook, Bamber Gascoigne, Sally Alexander, Jonathan Agar, Maria Misra and Sir Max Hastings. They were asked to choose: "Men and women whose actions during the reign of Elizabeth II have had a significant impact on lives in these islands and/or given the age its character, for better or worse." Producer: Clare Walker.
