Marketing Strategy & Brand Storytelling from Outside the Wine Industry One thing that sets the DTC Wine Symposium apart from most wine conferences is how many speakers come from outside the wine industry. Our friend Barbara Gorder taps into her Chicago ad-world network and brings in people who've spent their careers on the front lines of marketing, brand building, and cultural storytelling. The result is a perspective small wineries rarely get access to. Basically, we got a day at Leo Burnett University courtesy of Dean Barbara Gorder. As you might expect, the stories are as good as the insights. Lane Soelberg was on the early digital frontier at Leo Burnett and has been building narratives ever since. His work has shown up on your TV, inbox, computer, and phone for brands like GM, Pillsbury, and the Olympics. Today, based in Southern California, he helps shape global storytelling and innovation at the XPRIZE Foundation. Louie Monoyudis built his career at the intersection of fashion, brand, and entrepreneurship, from Leo Burnett to Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, and John Varvatos. No doubt about it, if DTC handed out a Best Dressed award, Louie wins in a landslide. Today, through Groove Jet Luxury Travel, he applies that same eye for detail and design to crafting deeply personal, highly curated experiences around the world. He has plenty to say about wine and luxury positioning. Mike Siska comes out of the creative agency world, where he helped shape culturally resonant brands and was one of the creators behind the iconic “Mayhem Like Me” campaign. His work lives where strategy meets humanity, exploring how ideas spread, how attention is earned, and how stories shape the way people connect. Three conversations from outside the wine world, all circling the same reality. Wine does not compete with other wines. It competes with everything. If we want people to care, we have to tell better stories, tell them in better places, and pay much closer attention to who is actually listening. Grab a notebook. Open a bottle. Class is in session. He critiques the rise of economic nationalism within the so-called “New Right,” condemning bipartisan support for tariffs, crony capitalism, and government-led industrial policy. Through sharp analysis and pointed cultural references, Markowski dismantles the myth that tariffs are a free-market solution and argues that real economic progress stems from individual entrepreneurship, not political manipulation. Bravo ! Send us a textWhat shapes a Global Marketing Leader's perspective? For Antonia Wade, PwC's Global Chief Marketing Officer and Marketing Week's Marketeer of the Year, Leadership Excellence stems from finding balance between professional ambition and personal fulfillment.Sitting in her study – her physical "Clearing" amid family life with two teenagers, a husband, and a dog named Biscuit – Antonia reflects on the formative experiences that built her leadership philosophy. Her journey from Architecture student to being Global Head of Marketing at PwC wasn't straightforward, but architectural thinking gave her the perfect foundation: balancing creativity with pragmatism while solving complex problems. The conversation explores how Antonia manages a Worldwide Team across time-zones without sacrificing her own boundaries. "If I'm emailing at the weekend, even if I don't intend for people to respond, they feel like they have to," she explains, highlighting how leadership behaviors unconsciously shape team culture. This awareness permeates her approach – protecting weekends, making time for cooking (her delightful "squirrel" distraction), and prioritizing family. At the heart of Antonia's Leadership perspective is a powerful guiding principle: "You are where you are today because of the decisions you made 5  years ago." This insight helps her evaluate current choices with future impact in mind while giving her team a framework for intentional career development. She complements this with advice from a former mentor: focus on "the things that only you can do" rather than trying to be everything to everyone.Beyond her professional insights, we discover Antonia's near-win in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award, her love of reading a novel weekly, and how she wrote her book "Transforming the B2B Buyer Journey" during gardening leave and airport layovers. Her parting advice embodies her leadership philosophy: "Be curious but also be bold and ambitious. You might as well push for the things you want – you certainly don't get what you want if you don't ask for it."Antonia Wade, Global Chief Marketing Officer at PwC and Marketing Week's Marketeer of the Year, shares her leadership journey and personal philosophy for maintaining balance in a demanding global role.• Finding your "clearing" - both physical and mental spaces for reflection and rejuvenation• How studying architecture created a foundation for balancing creativity and pragmatism in marketing• The importance of setting boundaries with work communications to model healthy behavior for your team• Making decisions today with awareness of their impact on your life five years from now• Focusing on "what only you can do" rather than trying to be everything to everyone• Finding inspiration through global travel, Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. We spent a recorded hour with esteemed journalist and editor Perry Garfinkle, author of the bestselling Buddha or Bust and the recently published Becoming Gandhi. Perry spoke of his quest to find morality in Gandhi's life and work and Gandhi's six principles and the differences between being and becoming – the latter presupposing the infinite in practice. Perry spoke of the Mahatma's lack of understanding of his own sexuality as well as his belief in goodness, which Perry labeled "pollyannaish." He was able to mix criticism of Gandhi and his principles, including naivete about social violence in man's nature and less sophistication in Gandhi than in the Buddha, with high respect for Gandhi's deep understanding of human suffering and the need for compassion and empathy with an enduring belief in passive resistance as a means to change. Perry spoke of religious differences in India and Gandhi's letters to Hitler, which went unanswered, and the media's overplay of an incident involving the Dali Lama, who wrote the Foreword to Perry's book, and a young boy. Michael and Perry also discuss the efficacy in today's world of passive resistance and links to Thoreau and Martin Luther King, as well as fasting and the impact of Richard Attenborough's famous film about the Mahatma and the Mahatma's essential twin pillars of truth and non-violence. Perry concluded by calling himself a cynic by profession but one who felt heartened as a result of being changed by studying Gandhi and striving to be "Perry 2.0."
