Shakespeare's plays are filled with unforgettable women—but too often, their voices are cut short. Ophelia never gets to defend herself. Gertrude never explains her choices. Lady Anne surrenders to Richard III in silence. In her new book, She Speaks: What Shakespeare's Women Might Have Said, acclaimed actor Dame Harriet Walter imagines what those characters might tell us if given the chance. Through original poems, Walter reimagines moments of silence, expands on fleeting lines, and provides depth to women who were left without a final word. Walter invites us to see Shakespeare's plays in a new light—reconsidering how we understand his female characters, and how their voices might transform the stories we thought we knew. Dame Harriet Walter, DBE, is one of Britain's most esteemed Shakespearean actors, whose roles include Ophelia, Viola, Lady Macbeth, Cleopatra, Brutus, King Henry IV, and Prospero, among others.. She has received a Laurence Olivier Award, as well as numerous nominations, including a Tony Award nomination, three Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Walter is also well-known for her appearances in Sense and Sensibility, Atonement, Downton Abbey, The Crown, Succession, Killing Eve, and Ted Lasso, among many other notable projects. In 2011, she was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for services to drama.
"The Studio" crushed the competition in comedies. "The Pitt" played spoiler to "Severance" in dramas. "Adolescence," as expected, took the top prizes in limited series. But there were plenty of surprises along the way as well as Nate Bargatze's efforts as host. We break down the highs and lows of this year's Primetime Emmy Awards. Also: "Dancing with the Stars" is back and the new Netflix documentary "aka Charlie Sheen" takes a look at the life of the actor. Note: The show discusses potential Emmy hosts, including Jimmy Kimmel. This podcast was recorded prior to ABC's suspension and subsequent reinstatement of him. About the show Streamed & Screened is a podcast about movies and TV hosted by Bruce Miller, a longtime entertainment reporter who is now the editor of the Sioux City Journal in Iowa and Terry Lipshetz, a senior producer for Lee Enterprises based in Madison, Wisconsin.
fWotD Episode 3059: Homer Simpson Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 19 September 2025, is Homer Simpson.Homer Jay Simpson is the main protagonist of the American animated television series The Simpsons. Part of the titular family, Homer made his television debut in the short "Good Night" on The Tracey Ullman Show on April 19, 1987. Cartoonist Matt Groening created and designed Homer while waiting in the lobby of James L. Brooks's office. Initially called to pitch a series of shorts based on his comic strip Life in Hell, Groening instead developed a new set of characters. After two years on The Tracey Ullman Show, the Simpson family received their own series, which premiered on Fox on December 17, 1989.Homer is the patriarch of the family; he is married to Marge, with whom he has three children, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. As the family's primary provider, Homer primarily works as a safety inspector at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. He embodies numerous American working-class stereotypes: he is overweight, balding, immature, unintelligent, outspoken, aggressive, lazy, ignorant, unprofessional, and deeply fond of beer, junk food, and television. Despite these flaws, Homer is fundamentally a good-hearted man and fiercely protective of his family, especially during critical moments. In the shorts and early episodes of The Simpsons, Dan Castellaneta voiced Homer with a loose impression of Walter Matthau. However, starting with the second season of the full-length series, Homer's voice evolved into a more robust tone to better convey a broader range of emotions. Homer has also appeared in various Simpsons-related media, including video games, The Simpsons Movie (2007), The Simpsons Ride, commercials, and comic books, and has inspired a wide range of merchandise. His iconic catchphrase, the annoyed grunt "D'oh!", has been recognized in linguistics, appearing in The New Oxford Dictionary of English since 1998 and the Oxford English Dictionary since 2001.Homer is regarded as one of the most iconic and influential television characters of all time and is widely recognized as an American cultural icon. In 2007, Entertainment Weekly ranked Homer ninth on their list of the "50 Greatest TV Icons", and in 2010, placed him first on their list of the "Top 100 Characters of the Past Twenty Years". The Sunday Times referred to him as "the greatest comic creation of [modern] time", while TV Guide, in 2002, called him the second-greatest cartoon character (after Bugs Bunny). Castellaneta has received four Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance, along with a special-achievement Annie Award. In 2000, Homer and the family were honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:07 UTC on Friday, 19 September 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Homer Simpson on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Ivy.

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesImages and video featuring promotional artwork, including a laser light show, of Marvel's Doctor Doom surfaced last week during Walt Disney Studios' Marketing Expo in Shanghai. While many fans and outlets of varying reputation and credibility were quick to assume and label the imagery as officially tied to Avengers: Doomsday and our first look of Robert Downey Jr in the role, there is nothing in the aforementioned marketing materials that brands the content as Marvel Studios'. Still, the concept art and accompanying light show are exciting as potential teases of what this highly anticipated version of the villain may look and feel like when he finally hits the big screen next December. In a completely unexpected turn of events during a recent appearance on The Howard Stern Show, James Gunn dished out more details surrounding his recently announced sequel to Superman, titled Man of Tomorrow, including an intended April 2026 slate to begin filming. The filmmaker shared, “It is a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat,” he said. “And it's more complicated than that. It's as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly.” On the other end of the DCU, during a red carpet appearance at the Emmys, Matt Reeves shared star Robert Pattinson's reaction to reading the long awaited script, saying “He's Batman, and if he doesn't like it, not good. I was super excited. I thought that he really would [like it] because the things that it does for his character, for Batman and for Bruce, have never been done before in this way. I had a feeling that he would respond in this way, but the fact that he did was incredibly encouraging.” It was a night of celebration for newcomer series at Sunday's 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, as HBO Max's rookie series The Pitt dominated the drama categories while Apple TV+'s The Studio swept comedy honors. Netflix's limited series Adolescence led the field with six trophies, including wins for writer-producer-star Stephen Graham, and HBO/HBO Max topped all networks with nine total Emmys, followed by Apple TV+ with seven. Notable firsts included Tramell Tillman becoming the first Black man to win Supporting Actor in a Drama for Severance, Seth Rogen claiming his first Emmy ever for The Studio, and The Penguin's Cristin Milioti bringing home the only award for the series for her portrayal of Sofia Falcone. The freshly merged Paramount/Skydance is exploring a potential bid to acquire all of Warner Brothers Discovery, according to the Wall Street Journal.Universal and Illumination have officially titled the Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, taking its name from Nintendo's 2007 Wii game and setting an April 3, 2026 release date. The entire voice cast including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, and Jack Black will return for the follow-up to the record-breaking original that earned $1.36 billion worldwide.Amazon MGM/s Highlander reboot, which was set to go into principal photography this month, will now be pushed into 2026 after Henry Cavill sustained an injury during pre-production.A24 has reportedly won the bidding war for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre film and TV rights, beating out competitors including Jordan Peele and Taylor Sheridan. The horror studio plans to first develop a series from Strange Darling director JT Mollner, producer Roy Lee, and Glen Powell, though Powell will not star in the project.Oscar nominated actress Mary McDonnell has joined the cast of Marvel's upcoming Vision series, the Hollywood Reporter has learned. At this time, her role has not been disclosed.

The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place this Sunday, as people ease into cooler weather by watching television shows and movies this fall. Omari Newton, head of acting and film departments at Vancouver Film School, joins the show to preview the season.
The Primetime Emmy Awards are right around the corner, so let's get excited about the real winners: The (likely) losers! We're singing the praises of this year's unsung heroes with a look at the dark horses and snubs (cast of Andor, anyone?) in this year's Emmys race. And wouldn't you know it? One of those dark horses happens to be the second half of our FX-themed summer show swap! Say Nothing is nominated for a writing award and it's easy to see why: It's a gripping true-history story of women breaking the glass ceiling of the Irish Republican Army during The Troubles filled with sharp dialogue and plenty of gallows humor (or “humour” if you're feeling vibe). ———
pWotD Episode 3039: Taylor Swift Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 294,711 views on Wednesday, 27 August 2025 our article of the day is Taylor Swift.Taylor Alison Swift (born December 13, 1989) is an American singer-songwriter. Known for her autobiographical songwriting, artistic reinventions, and cultural impact, Swift is the highest-grossing live music artist, the wealthiest female musician, and one of the best-selling music artists of all time.Swift signed with Big Machine Records in 2005 and debuted as a country singer with the albums Taylor Swift (2006) and Fearless (2008). The singles "Teardrops on My Guitar", "Love Story", and "You Belong with Me" found crossover success on country and pop radio formats. Speak Now (2010) expanded her country pop sound with rock influences, and Red (2012) featured a pop-friendly production. She recalibrated her artistic identity from country to pop with the synth-pop album 1989 (2014) and the hip-hop-imbued Reputation (2017). Through the 2010s, she accumulated the Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together", "Shake It Off", "Blank Space", "Bad Blood", and "Look What You Made Me Do".After Swift signed with Republic Records in 2018, she re-recorded four of her Big Machine albums due to a dispute with the label, which prompted an industry discourse on artists' rights. She released the eclectic pop album Lover (2019), the indie folk albums Folklore and Evermore (both 2020), the electropop record Midnights (2022), and the double album The Tortured Poets Department (2024). Her Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles in the 2020s are "Cardigan", "Willow", "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)", "Anti-Hero", "Cruel Summer", "Is It Over Now?", and "Fortnight". Her Eras Tour (2023–2024) is the highest-grossing concert tour of all time. Its accompanying concert film, The Eras Tour (2023), became the highest-grossing in history.Swift is the only artist to have been named the IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year five times. A record seven of her albums have each sold over a million copies first-week in the US. Publications such as Rolling Stone and Billboard have ranked her among the greatest artists of all time. She is the first individual from the arts to be named Time Person of the Year (2023). Her accolades include 14 Grammy Awards—including a record four Album of the Year wins—and a Primetime Emmy Award. "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story" is the second season of the American biographical crime drama anthology television series Monster, created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan for Netflix. The season centers on the 1989 parricides of José (Javier Bardem) and Kitty Menendez (Chloë Sevigny), who were killed by their sons, Lyle (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch). The season achieved global commercial success, debuting as the number-one series on Netflix worldwide, the most-viewed streaming content on the Nielsen Streaming Chart, and the third most-watched Netflix series in the second half of 2024. At the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, it earned 11 nominations, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Koch and Sevigny, respectively. Emmy Award®-nominated Director Philip Barantini and fellow nominees — including cinematographer Matthew Lewis and the sound team of James Drake, Jules Woods, Rob Entwistle, and Kiff McManus — join us this week to discuss the making of “Adolescence,” Netflix's hit limited series. Nominated for thirteen Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, the show's four episodes were each filmed as single, continuous takes, creating a gripping real-time experience for viewers — and offering some unexpected advantages for the filmmakers.“For Netflix, it was very different for them because… they're very limited in what notes you can give. You can't say, ‘I think that scene needs to move to a different location' or whatever. It's literally got to be performance notes… And so, they were fantastic. After a hiatus that was inexcusably long, the boys are back to celebrate Episode 40! And since it's a special occasion, they decided to give you a special episode that harkens back to the idea that started it all. Instead of turning their iconic film Olympia into a mini series, the boys try to craft an original series that would get Arnold Schwarzenegger a Primetime Emmy Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. And they came to play, because the show they create is a banger, if we do say so ourselves. I won't spoil too much in this description, but let's just say Arnie will be taking a trip to Eastern Europe and flexing his political chops again, this time in a more dictatorial way. Can Arnold hold on to this Seat of Power, or is his reign as a nation's leader destined to fail? Beyond just the premise, the boys plot out the rough skeleton of the plot, cast the supporting actors, and even select some writers and directors to help bring this vision to life. If this doesn't win an Emmy for Arnold, nothing will.Don't worry, we know you're all waiting to hear what the opening segment will be. Today the boys imagine Arnold in the role of Thomas Mitchell's character Doc Boone in John Ford's 1939 picture "Stagecoach." Can Arnold handle playing a drunken old doctor in the wild west? Yes, we think he certainly can. Although whether or not he can win an Oscar in the early years of World War II might prove to be a challenge.Hosted by Sonny de Nocker (@swankysonny) and Tom Price (@thomas_price22).Theme by Josh Britt (jbrittmusic.com)Instagram: AnOscarForArnoldTwitter: @AnOscar4ArnoldTikTok: AnOscarForArnoldContact: AnOscarForArnold@gmail.com

It's still warm from the heat of the nominations this morning for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, where Apple dominated the competition, leading both the drama and comedy fields with the long-awaited second season of Severance (27) and the first season of The Studio (a record-setting 23). On episode 296 I am joined by The Ankler's Katey Rich to break down this year's nominees. From the ongoing strength of The White Lotus, continuing to dominate the acting categories, to buzzy new shows like The Pitt, Rich and we look at how and why certain shows remain strong in the minds of Emmy voters, why The Bear fell dramatically, and talk about some of the biggest snubs and surprises of the day. Jean Carroll about her life and new book and I think it was one of the best conversations I've had in a long time. She makes it very easy with her humor and brilliance. I was very inspired by her story and the way she has handled it all with elegance and humor and she could not have been kinder to me. I hope we will get to talk again and I hope you will subscribe to her substack and get her book E. Jean Carroll, born Elizabeth Jean Carroll on December 12, 1943, is an American journalist, author, and advice columnist. She is best known for her long-running "Ask E. Jean" column in Elle magazine, which ran from 1993 to 2019. Carroll gained prominence for accusing Donald Trump of sexual assault in her 2019 memoir, "What Do We Need Men For? A Modest Proposal". Early Career: Carroll began her career as a writer for magazines like Rolling Stone and Playboy, and later became a contributing editor for Esquire and Outside. "Ask E. Jean" Column: Her advice column in Elle, which she started in 1993, became one of the longest-running in American publishing. "What Do We Need Men For?" In her 2019 memoir, Carroll detailed the alleged sexual assault by Donald Trump in the mid-1990s, as well as other experiences with harassment and mistreatment. Lawsuits Against Trump: Carroll sued Trump for defamation and battery related to his public denials of her allegations. Jury Verdict: In May 2023, a jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation against Carroll and awarded her $5 million. Carroll also hosted her own television show, "Ask E. Jean," in the 1990s. She co-founded the dating website Greatboyfriends.com and the matchmaking service Tawkify. She was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series in 1987. Her book, "What Do We Need Men For?", was excerpted in New York magazine.
