Jessie Street was a pioneering feminist in Australia, who fought for women's rights, equal pay, reproductive rights, as well as indigenous rights during an amazing 81 year life. She was one of the activists behind the changes in the 1967 referendum. Dr Lenore Coltheart is a historian who was employed by the Street family to update Jessie's autobiography and is now writing the first full blown biography of a great and  sometimes overlooked pioneer. There is no surviving audio for 'Is it to be back to the kitchen?' so it is read for this podcast by actor Blazey Best. The opening audio of Jessie Street speaking is from 'Women's Status in the United Nations Charter' recorded for the International Women's Radio League. If you take a close look at history books, you will certainly find examples of decisive moments where music and power crossed paths. And by now, there must be some of those examples of moments already jostling in your head? Perhaps you are thinking of the encounter between the genius of Mozart conquered by the Freemasons?  Or maybe between the composer Richard Wagner, dreamed but impossible love of King Louis the Second of Bavaria? And what about the one between Russian composer Dmitry Shostakovich manhandled like a toy by Stalin? Or the one between the Italian French composer Jean-Baptiste Lully, who only lived to magnify French King Louis the Fourteen? Last but not least and perhaps the most spectacular of all, is the encounter between the incredible British talent, Ethel Smyth, and the Suffragette revolution in Great Britain. Yes, the list is very long of this type of encounters, but as you notice, most are examples from Europe. Yet in Africa, such encounters exist, a major one that deserves mention is a crossing between a man of power, the former president of Zaire, (current DRC), President Mobutu Sese Seko Kuku Ngbendu Wa Za Banga, and a type of music, but can you guess which one? We will find this out soon…

The PurposeGirl Podcast: Empowering women to live their purpose with courage, joy, and fierce self-love.

We all have dreams. Huge, amazing, juicy dreams. And maybe we feel like they're not possible. And maybe it's because we don't see people who look like us doing those things. But you can shatter any glass ceiling, and we saw proof of that in this year's election results. Regardless of your politics it's so inspiring to see people who really represent America's beautiful diversity getting recognized and elected. The value of inspiration or the feeling of being inspired is not just the juicy feeling itself – the value of inspiration is that it breathes life into us and shows us what already exists in our truest selves. Think about it - when we are inspired by someone or something that they've done, it speaks to the part of us that says, “me too. I want that, too.” This year's election has allowed a lot of people to say “me too” who have never had the chance to. And that, my love, is so inspiring.   In this solo episode of The PurposeGirl Podcast, I talk about how this election was one of inspiration, how it provided millions of people all over the world with positive evidence of what is possible for them, and of course how much I freaking LOVED Madame Vice President-Elect's (AH, I cannot believe I get to call her that!) Suffragette white pant suit. I mean, where do I get one!?  We talk about all the firsts that happened this election: everything from Kamala's win, to the first two gay, black men getting elected to congress, the first openly trans congressperson, the first Korean – American elected to congress, and so much more.   In this episode, I talk about: The importance of celebrating the glass-ceiling-shattering events that occurred this week, regardless of political affiliation. Inspiration leading to creativity, which leads to endless possibility and opportunity. What confirmation bias is and how this week was an example of moving the lever. PurposePower Tips on how to break any glass ceiling, how to cultivate a list of your desires to allow you to dream and achieve, and how to take action. Want more PurposeGirl?? In 1842 the Prophet Joseph Smith formed The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints’ first women’s organization known today as the Relief Society, stating, “this is the beginning of better days.” That promise was fulfilled as Latter-Day Saint women continued to serve their community and advocated for the equal voting rights of women in Utah and the United States. Better Days 2020 is a non-profit dedicated to popularizing this history as the year 2020 marks a year of celebrations for voting rights — the 150th anniversary of Utah women being the first in the nation to vote, the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment generally granting women the vote, and the 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act protecting voting rights for women and men of all races. Better Days’ historical director Katherine Kitterman and historical research associate Rebekah Ryan Clark look at the privilege and duty of voting and share the story of the pioneering suffragettes who bravely blazed the path for the right to participate in elections. The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Host Sarah Jane Weaver, reporter and editor for The Church News for a quarter-century, shares a unique view of the stories, events, and most important people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I am joined today by political activist, campaigner, author and marketing consultant Matt O'Connor. Think back to 2001 in the UK and you will remember Dads dressed up as Superhero's scaling public buildings and taking direct action over how fathers were treated in the Family Courts. That organisation was called Fathers for Justice and it's founder was today's guest Matt O'Connor. Never before had the UK seen such direct action since the Suffragette movement a century earlier. Fast Forward almost two decades and whilst there have been some improvements to the rights of Fathers and Men in the English Legal System, there is still much work to do and Matt continues to be at the forefront of this fight. I find out from Matt what has changed, what hasn't, the injustices and discrimination he still sees taking place, and why there is a double standard when it comes to men and women in the eyes of the Law. We also discuss the catastrophic impact family breakdown has on society as a whole. Victoria Woodhull had a few things stacked against her: She ran for president a half century before women had the right to vote. She ran on a platform of sexual and gender equality that so enraged her political enemies they passed laws to silence her. She spoke about free-love nearly a century before the sexual revolution. Her running mate was a Black man and former slave. Oh, and she spent Election Day behind bars. Indeed, Woodhull might be the longest long shot of them all -- a candidate so visionary she'd still be considered an edgy progressive today. Her Long Shot campaign came in 1872.
