On Tuesday, voters in Virginia, New York City, New Jersey, Texas, California, and Mississippi overwhelmingly supported Democratic candidates and ballot initiatives. In New York, despite facing racist opposition from both Republicans and much of the Democratic establishment, Zohran Mamdani sailed to victory. The new mayor-elect won over 50 percent of the vote in a three-way race. And in Virginia, Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger won with an even greater margin over her opponent, Winsome Earle-Sears, whose campaign weaponized transphobia in a vain attempt to defeat Spanberger. In California, as of Wednesday, nearly two-thirds of the vote favored redrawing the congressional map to counter Republican gerrymandering in Texas. The Intercept Briefing spoke with Amanda Litman, co-founder and president of the PAC Run for Something, and Maurice Mitchell, national director of the Working Families Party, to discuss what lessons Democrats and progressives should take heading into the midterm elections. Mitchell pointed to Mamdani's and other Democrats' success last night at driving home a positive economic message for working-class voters as an important roadmap for next year.“There's elements of [Mamdani's] victory that are very particular to New York, that are very particular to him, but the politics and the conditions that are a part of the victory are happening all across the country,” said Mitchell. “It's clear that this was a wave election. And inside of that wave are a number of independent, progressive-minded folks who didn't wait their turn, who are willing to fight for working people.” Similarly, Litman argued that Democrats need to embrace a big tent that includes progressive voices. "You need candidates who know what they believe, who know how to communicate, who love the place they're running, and who can articulate why voters should want them to win,” she said.Litman continued, “Does every candidate need to have the exact same ideological profile? No. But also, the person who's running and winning a seat on the Iowa City Council is probably not a good fit for the New York City Council, and vice versa. And that's OK. To be a party that can win everywhere, which is what we need to be in order to stop authoritarianism and stop what the Republican Party has done, we need to have a big tent.” Listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen. You can support our work at theintercept.com/join. Virginia Giuffre's memoir, “Nobody's Girl,” is again shining a light on justice for the survivors of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. The Department of Justice says Epstein died by suicide in his jail cell while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Maxwell is serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking. Over the summer, she was moved to a minimum security prison in Texas after meeting privately with Trump administration officials. In the book, Giuffre recounts how she was lured into Epstein's world after meeting Maxwell at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago spa at the age of 16. She was then subjected to years of abuse where she was sex trafficked, including to England's former Prince Andrew, whose title was revoked last week in part due to these allegations.Giuffre took her own life earlier this year. Even before her memoir was released posthumously, she was one of Epstein's most outspoken accusers. We sit down with Giuffre's brother and sister-in-law about her story and their call for justice. We also speak with Marijke Chartouni, another Epstein survivor who says she was recruited in 2000 and was sexually assaulted by Epstein.Find more of our programs online. Blayne Alexander joins Keith Morrison to discuss her episode, “The Death of Dr. Schwartz.” In 2014, Dr. Steven Schwartz was found murdered in his Tarpon Springs, Florida, home. What initially looked like a burglary gone wrong turned out to be something much darker. Investigators uncovered a story of greed, betrayal, and a hidden past that stunned even those closest to the doctor. Blayne shares her experience reporting the case across Florida, Texas, New Mexico, and Albania — where she spoke to a man who was convicted in connection to the crime. She also shares her conversation with Detective Lara Scarpatti, one of the first officers on the scene, about the unusual behavior she noticed that night. Saving American Liberty, Session 3 What are "Left" and "Right," politically? Where does political extremism come from, on both sides? These are crucially important questions in our present era of extreme polarization that only seems to be increasing past any sense of a possible limit. To address these questions in a deep and fresh way, from August 22-23, 2025, in Dallas, Texas, New Discourses was proud to host a learning seminar event called Saving American Liberty, featuring talks from New Discourses founder James Lindsay and the founder of Sovereign Nations and New Discourses partner, Michael O'Fallon. In this third talk of the seminar, Lindsay puts some foundation under the confusing terms "Left" and "Right," which have strayed quite a bit from their origins in the French Revolution. He then explains a second dimension of political orientation as being located in metaphysical realism versus idealism. Using the metaphor of a pair of scales, or a balance, he makes a case for a healthy politics, Left and Right, as compared to pathological, extremist politics, Left and Right, that seek to destroy everything from their idealist mania. Join him to gain depth and clarity on this important subject. Join Scot and Greg as they break down Democrats' bigger-than-expected wins in Virginia and New Jersey, Zohran Mamdani coasting to victory in New York City, and several ballot initiatives that mostly went the wrong way.First, they dig into Virginia, where Democrat Abigail defeated Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears by nearly 15 points, outperforming every major poll. That landslide also helped rage texter Jay Jones win the attorney general's race by six points, while Democrats picked up 13 seats in the state legislature. In New Jersey, Democrat Mikie Sherrill beat Jack Ciattarelli by 13 points. The wins were not shocking, but the margins were, and Scot and Greg break down what those results mean heading into 2026.Next, they come to grips with Zohran Mamdani winning the New York City mayor's race by taking comfort that Andrew Cuomo won't be mayor. They also highlight some very ominous indications of what's to come from Mamdani's victory speech. Dems will undoubtedly try to mimic his smiley socialism in some parts of the country next year. Are Republicans ready to fight it?Finally, they analyze key ballot measures across the country, including strong conservative victories in Texas protecting parental rights and requiring proof of citizenship to vote. But not all results went the right way, as Gavin Newsom's gerrymander gimmick passed easily in California, and Colorado voters approved a tax hike on the wealthy to fund free school meals. Please visit our great sponsors:Give your liver the support it deserves with Dose Daily.  Save 35% on your first month when you subscribe at https://DoseDaily.co/3ML or enter code 3ML at checkout. Get 20% off your first purchase of classic menswear. Every time Shawn has visited the dam, the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. The dam is different than any other dam Shawn has seen, when you consider the lengths county officials have gone to, to keep people away from the dam. 7-foot fences surround the dam that are topped with razor wire. Shawn doesn't have to guess why the county has gone to such lengths to keep people away from the dam. He's had multiple encounters with something there that would definitely make the county want to keep people away. Locals who live near the dam don't go outside, after dark. They stay inside their homes. Shawn spoke with a man who works at a shop, in the area, who told Shawn that he won't go outside after dark there, either. We hope you'll tune in and listen to Shawn share more about the area and the experiences he's had there. To visit the Lonestar Cryptid Research Facebook Page, please go to…https://www.facebook.com/p/Lonestar-Cryptid-Research-61577279051213/To visit Lonestar Cryptid Research on Instagram, please go to…https://www.instagram.com/lone_star_cryptid_research/ MY NEW DOGMAN PODCAST!My new podcast is called "Dogman Tales.” It features fictional stories about Dogmen and people who have experiences with them. As expected Zohran Mamdani will become the mayor of New York City and for the first time the city will be led by a socialist/communist. Also Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said he will impose a steep tariff on New Yorkers moving to his state after voting on Election Day ends, a variety of propositions are passed in Texas and the government shutdown centers around liberals wanting health care without paying for it. Martha MacCallum, executive editor and anchor of The Story on Fox News, co-anchor of Fox News Politics, and author of Unknown Valor: A Story of Family, Courage, and Sacrifice from Pearl Harbor to Iwo Jima, joined The Guy Benson Show today to unpack the results from last night's off-year elections in NYC, NJ, and VA. MacCallum discussed the New Jersey governor's race and why Democrats' blowout win over Jack Ciattarelli caught many off guard, especially as Ciattarelli appeared close in the most recent polling. MacCallum analyzed how young and Latino voters appeared to swing back toward Democrats after previously moving towards Trump in 2024, and why economic and foreign policy issues may have played a key role in the Democrats' sweep. MacCallum also weighed in on Zohran Mamdani's tone-shifting victory speech, which leaned heavily into identity politics and grievance narratives. Finally, MacCallum explained how California's Prop 50 has once again flipped the redistricting debate on its head following Texas' redistricting efforts, and finally, she touched on King Charles' decision to strip Prince Andrew of his royal title. An essential part of our children's education is learning proper moral behavior. And who better to deliver that ethical guidance than politicians?Huh? Bizarre, yet this is the conclusion of the GOP's theocratic Christian Nationalist faction. They are demanding that legislatures across the country must intervene in local educational policy to require that all public schools plaster every classroom with Christianity's Ten Commandments. It's in-your-face religiosity, forcing one religious dogma on students of every faith. It's also ludicrously hypocritical – after all, legislators are notorious for committing adultery, stealing from the poor, killing in the name of the state, bearing false witness against immigrants, bowing down to false gods… and otherwise mocking the Christian religion's own commandments. Who do these nationalists and their politicians think they're fooling?Certainly not America's free-thinking students. If you wonder whether young people will just go along, take heart in the uplifting thoughts of Arjun Sharda, a high-school freshman in Round Rock, Texas. In a recent op-ed piece, he went right at the humbuggery of the state's Republican leaders: “The same lawmakers who preach about freedom and limited government,” he wrote, “are now legislating what we must hang on our classroom walls... But faith loses its power when it's forced. True belief comes from conviction, not compulsion… Texas prides itself in independence, yet this law enforces conformity.”The Christian Nationalist autocrats are not only trying to turn public classrooms into their exclusive pulpits, but to establish their repressive theology as America's official religion. As Sharda warns, “Texas should stop confusing religion with righteousness – before the wall between church and state becomes just another thing we've torn down.”Do something! To work on the fight to keep church and state actually separate, check out the Freedom from Religion Foundation at ffrf.org.Jim Hightower's Lowdown is a reader-supported publication.
