The Truth About Aging Skin: What Actually Works After 40 | Episode 518

Pioneering Today with Melissa K. Norris

Is your skincare routine actually helping your skin, or are you just chasing the next quick fix? In this episode, I'm joined by Emilie Toups, founder of Toups & Co., to talk about natural skincare for aging skin and what really changes as we move through our late 30s, 40s, and beyond. We're digging into why skin can become drier and thinner as we age, how hormones and lifestyle may play a role, and why healthy skin starts with more than what you put on your face. We also break down some common skincare ingredients, including hyaluronic acid, AHAs, bakuchiol, retinol, tallow, fragrance, and those confusing "natural" and "botanical" labels you see on products. In this episode, we discuss: Why your skin changes as you age Why there's no 10-day miracle fix for aging skin How nutrition, sleep, hydration, and lifestyle support healthy skin Skincare ingredients that sound scary but can actually be beneficial Why Emilie prefers bakuchiol as an alternative to retinol What "natural fragrance" really means Why sourcing and processing matter when choosing tallow skincare How often to use facial masks and exfoliating products What to consider when choosing sunscreen and sun protection The best place to start if you want to simplify your skincare routine If you've noticed your skin changing and aren't interested in complicated routines or unrealistic anti-aging promises, this conversation will help you take a simpler, more informed approach to caring for your skin. New Course Now Available: Find Confidence in Crisis Today! When your child hits you, kicks you, or says something that takes your breath away, and a single thought takes over: I have to make this stop. In this honest conversation, host Chad Hayenga sits down with coaches Lydia Rex and Katie Wetsell to explore what’s really happening beneath a child’s aggressive behavior, and why the goal isn’t to fix it magically, but to become the steady, faith-filled presence your child needs in their hardest moments. What they share might just change the way you show up on the car ride home.  If this conversation hits home for you, there’s a next step made for exactly this. Lydia and Katie built a brand-new mini course, Confidence in the Crisis: Navigating Aggressive Behaviors, for parents who feel shaken by their child’s big behaviors. For just $28, they walk alongside you, weaving the Connected Families Framework™  together with Trust-Based Relational Intervention® and Nonviolent Resistance into one practical, faith-filled experience. You’ll leave with a personalized safety plan for your family, evidence-based strategies you can use right away, and deeper trust that God has equipped you for this very moment. With a plan, what once felt unsettling can become an opportunity to anchor your family in faith and grow closer through the hard things. Key Takeaways: What aggression really is, and the deeper emotions often driving it The physical and brain-body factors parents often overlook: sleep, nutrition, neurodivergence, pain, and more Why the Connected Families Framework still applies, even when bigger struggles are at play How to move from “I have to make this behavior stop” to “God has equipped me for this moment” Mentioned in this Podcast:  Confidence in Crisis online course NEW! 2 Timothy 1:7  Malachi 4:2  Psalm 4:4  Blog Post – Why Is My Child So Angry? The Return of Value Investing

Money On Tap

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 7, 2026 56:01

Value investing spent fifteen years out of fashion. This year, it's beating the index almost everywhere you look — energy up roughly 20%, industrials 17%, healthcare 15%, utilities 14%, financials 12% — while the S&P 500 sits near 8–9%. This week we dig into the return of value investing and what the greatest investors of all time can teach us right now. On this week's Money On Tap, we go deep on the tradition that runs from Benjamin Graham through Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger: buying good businesses at sensible prices, collecting the dividends they pay you, and letting compounding do the heavy lifting. We explain why value went dark from roughly 2009 to 2025 — cheap money was rocket fuel for growth stocks — and why higher interest rates have flipped the script: growth borrows, value pays you. We connect the rotation to worn-out tech traders taking gains, the 401(k) flywheel, and the demographic engine underneath it all — roughly 10,000 baby boomers reaching retirement age every day, all needing present-day income. Plus Pepsi's 53-year dividend streak and a candid conversation about when mutual funds and ETFs stop making sense and direct stock ownership starts. What you'll learn:The sector scoreboard: energy ~20%, industrials ~17%, healthcare ~15%, utilities ~14%, financials ~12%, staples ~9% — vs. the S&P 500 near 8–9%Graham vs. Buffett: buy cheap and sell at fair value, or buy outstanding businesses and hold for decadesMunger's rule: "The big money is not in the buying or the selling, but in the waiting"Why low interest rates buried value for fifteen years — and why higher rates brought it backMargin of safety: the idea that protects you when you're wrongWhy money is rotating into companies that pay you to own them — dividends over promisesThe demographic engine: 10,000 boomers a day retiring and the demand for present-day incomeThe compounding story: Buffett's American Express dividends now exceed his entire original investment — every yearWhen funds stop making sense: the case for direct stock ownership at higher net worthPlus Money In The News:SpaceX says it's coming for AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile customers — but does satellite cell service actually work? The Treasury has refunded $100 billion in invalidated tariff revenue to companies — and none of it is coming back to youA tale of two housing markets: luxury demand surges while starter-home buyers finally see inventoryWant a white paper on this week's topic? Dividend payments are not guaranteed and may be reduced or eliminated at any time. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results. What is value investing and why is it working again in 2026?Value investing means buying strong, profitable, often dividend-paying companies at sensible prices and holding them patiently — the approach built by Benjamin Graham and made famous by Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger. It struggled while near-zero interest rates favored growth stocks, but higher rates flipped the equation: in 2026, value sectors like energy (~20%), industrials (~17%), and healthcare (~15%) are outpacing the S&P 500's roughly 8–9%. The appeal is simple — instead of borrowing to chase growth, these companies pay shareholders real income today, and reinvested dividends compound over decades.

In this episode of the Sound of Economics, host Rebecca Christie sits down with Bruegel Director Jeromin Zettelmeyer, researcher Silvia Merler and Bank of France Deputy Governor Agnès Bénassy-Quéré to talk about common European debt and the idea of a 'safe asset'. What makes government bonds a part of public infrastructure as well as a tool for financing public goods? Why is how to borrow money for public goods treated as a separate question from how to spend it? Should the European Union sell more common debt or look at a layered system that works with national borrowers, such as the swap proposal put forward by Olivier Blanchard and Angel Ubide? Will United States Treasury bonds always be the world's only major reference asset, or will the EU get a seat at that table? In this episode, I share one of the biggest shifts that's happened in my own work over the last year. After spending more than a decade teaching fertility, I've realized that knowledge alone doesn't create transformation. Most women I work with already know what to eat, what supplements to take, and what lifestyle changes they "should" be making. The real question is: Why aren't those things changing your reality? Using a simple timeline, I walk you through the way I now understand fertility, health, and life itself. We explore how your cellular health, inherited patterns, nervous system, subconscious beliefs, and identity all interact to shape the life you're living today—and why healing isn't about becoming perfect. It's about changing the direction you're moving. I also share my own fertility story, from two failed IVF cycles and recurrent pregnancy loss to eventually becoming pregnant naturally after being told my egg quality couldn't improve. More importantly, I explain why that wasn't the end of the journey. Because having the baby wasn't the biggest transformation. Becoming aware of the patterns that had been running my entire life was. 00:00 – Welcome to Finding Fertility 01:00 – Why I'm moving away from teaching and toward awareness 03:55 – My fertility story begins: what eight years of infertility taught me 05:20 – The timeline that changed everything: cellular health vs. simply getting older 08:00 – My first failed IVF and refusing to believe there was "nothing I could do" 10:30 – The fertility line: why improvement happens long before success 11:50 – Discovering immune issues, inflammation, and the gut connection 13:15 – My first pregnancy after years of infertility 15:10 – IVF success, miscarriage, and the natural pregnancy I never thought was possible 17:30 – The biggest lesson wasn't fertility—it was my subconscious patterns 19:25 – Why high-achieving women plateau despite doing everything right 21:20 – "How do I actually change?" 21:45 – Why affirmations work for some people—but not everyone 25:55 – The emotional blocks and identity patterns keeping you stuck 27:10 – "But what about women who do nothing and still get pregnant?" 29:10 – Doing vs. Being: the trap so many women never see 30:35 – Consistency creates evidence: rewiring your nervous system and subconscious 31:25 – Final thoughts Book a Fertility Breakthrough Session Today : https://calendly.com/findingfertility/discoveryconsultation If this episode resonated with you, I'd love if you left a review. #251Have you ever felt like you're not allowed to say this out loud? That Comprehensible Input works beautifully with novices… but something feels different at Intermediate High and Advanced? That maybe your students plateau, avoid complex structures, or fossilize errors and you quietly wonder if you're doing something wrong? What if the issue isn't you… and it isn't your students… but the choice we've created between CI or explicit instruction?Topics in this Episode: The tension around CI and explicit instruction: CI has become dominant; Some spaces treat explicit instruction as regression; Teachers feel pressure to claim “pure CI;" Meanwhile, many quietly supplement. Most SLA studies focus on novice/intermediate learners; there simply aren't many rigorous studies examining advanced learners. When you attend CI workshops or read CI literature, the vast majority of examples, materials, and strategies target novice learners. This isn't because CI can't work at higher levels. It's because we haven't developed robust models for what it looks like there. The 'bandwagon effect': CI has achieved near-ideological status in some circles. Teachers feel pressure to claim 'pure CI' success even when they're supplementing with explicit instruction. The research does NOT support abandoning CI at advanced levels. It DOES support integrating strategic explicit instruction, particularly for complex features that are infrequent or non-salient in input.Blog Post with Cited Research: Balancing CI and Explicit Instruction Across Proficiency LevelsA Few Ways We Can Work Together:Ready For Tomorrow Quick Win PD for Individual TeachersOn-Site or Virtual Workshops for Language DepartmentsSelf-Paced Program for For Language DepartmentsConnect With Me & The World Language Classroom Community:Website: wlclassrom.comInstagram:  @wlclassroomFacebook Group: World Language ClassroomFacebook:  /wlclassroomLinkedIn: Joshua CabralBluesky: /wlclassroom.bsky.sociaX (Twitter):  @wlclassroomThreads: @wlclassroomSend me a text and let me know your thoughts on this episode or the podcast.
