The guest for this interview of Out of the Clouds is Siddha Jain, Chief Business Officer at Bombae, by Bombay Shaving Company,  a premium women's personal care and grooming brand launched during the pandemic. Siddha is a savvy and creative executive who in her own words followed the expected track, first studying hard to first become an engineer, then obtaining an MBA, and later becoming a consultant at Bain & Company. Host Anne invites Siddha to talk about her story (hint: her goal is to prove herself). She explains how her mother imbued her with vision and taught her the value of being persistent. She then reveals her own vision, with the not-so-hidden aim to become an expert in other fields, essentially a ‘jack of all trades.' Siddha also brings her ikigai, the Japanese concept of having a sense of purpose, and shares how her passion for dance and creating events are extracurricular pursuits that connect her to the greater purpose of her life. The pair touch on Bombae's values and the content strategies that the brand uses to connect with its customers, including a collaboration with India's top women stand-up comedians. And, as a woman at the executive level, Siddha offers her thoughts about what helps her feel confident as well as how and why she brings her full self to work. Then Anne asks Siddha to talk about what it's like to build a brand and design products for a bold and cheeky consumer. Bombae's mission around hair removal is raised, which leads them to explore the complex relationship women in India and around the world have with their body and facial hair. A deeply engaging interview with a thoughtful and passionate woman. What is Your Business Consistency and Creativity Ratio?

High Flow Lifestyle

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 19, 2021 7:39

On this episode of High Flow Lifestyle, we are talking about the balance of consistency and creativity that entrepreneurs have.  I was thinking the other day about the balance of consistency and creativity that entrepreneurs and self-employed business owners must have. I’m not saying it needs to be an even balance or that there is even a correct ratio, just that as business owners we probably tend to lean to one side or another. But flow can be found on either side you lean toward. Take my wife Satomi for example, she is the executive chef at our 3 restaurants and she probably has a 80 percent consistency to 20% creativity balance. She often says she’s not creative, but I see her as extremely creative when she is in her flow.  Our restaurants revolve around Japanese cuisine and in Japanese culture the idea of craftsmanship is very important. Attention to detail in something like making ramen for example, is extremely important. Maintaining consistency is in itself an artform. That is, after you have created, tweaked, and improved your product and brought it to market. And truth be told there really is no finish line for a recipe, it is a living, breathing thing.

Ep 026: Find your brave & bonkers and screw what others think, with actress Claire Merrick

Big Juicy Creative

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 26, 2020 54:03

Claire Merrick is an actress and voiceover artist and one of the most creatively brave people I know. Why? Because she ditched a very comfortable, successful career in innovation at 41, to pursue her dream of being an actress, despite people thinking she was bonkers. The thing I admire most is that she keeps putting herself out there, and being vulnerable, not letting her fear (or judgement from others) stop her. She does this because, as she explains, knows the value of feeding her creativity, and the huge personal cost of not. She’s also done a Master’s in Business Creativity and Innovation. So she knows her stuff both practically and theoretically. This episode was actually never intended to be aired. It was intended to be my practice episode where I got my head around podcasting. We talk about permission, the definition of success, therapy… and how as adults we often become disconnected from that childlike creative joy, how we can get it back and how an essential part of enjoying creativity, and life, is to drop toxic perfectionism. Which is why I’m not going to worry too much about the fact this episode, the first I’ve ever made, isn’t flawless. But, as Claire will inspire you to do, the most important thing is just to create. Not to waste your life thinking about it, or worrying too much what the world thinks. On that note, please look past the imperfections and enjoy this chat with the brilliant Clare Merrick as much as I did.  If you need an injection of brave to get your creative juices flowing, this episode is definitely for you References: Claire’s Merrick’s website: https://www.voiceoversbyclaire.com So the Big Juicy Creative people can reach and inspire as many people as possible, please share with your friends and follow on social media! Kiran Khalap -- Navigating Business, Creativity and Spirituality!

Awakin Call

Where do business and spirituality meet? How does one use creativity to unite? How might we walk our unique path in solving problems outside and dissolving the ego inside?      A weekday brand-consultant, a weekend rock-climber, author during nights and a lifetime seeker of Truth -- Kiran Khalap’s journey is a striking example of a life of emergence which defies linear planning.    At the early age of 17, when most are concerned about grades and friends, Kiran’s strongest yearning was “to know the Truth”. He read most contemporary philosophers and ancient scriptures, but finally it was J Krishnamurti’s words which changed his life. In the attempts of paying forward his gratitude and carry forward JK’s vision, Kiran after finishing graduation joined Rajghat Besant School, in Varanasi, as a teacher. In those 4 years, he taught who he was, with no sense of hierarchy and found himself learning and evolving in the process.    Parents’ illness brought him back to Mumbai, and with his natural creative gifts in writing and storytelling, he joined the advertising industry. A few years later, he co-founded and continues to lead a brand consulting firm “chlorophyll” which has worked with hundreds of brands, including the world’s largest biometric identity brand Aadhar. chlorophyll (in lowercase), a well respected agency, is a home to questioning, ideation and creative tinkering. In an industry marked by hypercompetition and excesses, one of its unique, very counterintuitive principles is to “not draw attention towards itself”. Yet paradoxically, it has emerged as one of most revered organizations in the Industry delivering professional excellence along with deep integrity. From 10-min meditation sits in weekly meetings, to letting go top clients for employees’ wellness - metrics of responsibility and compassion take precedence over net profits.    A disciplined practitioner of yoga and Vipassana since decades, Kiran believes that society changes only when individuals change. “And the person who I have the best shot at changing is myself” he says. Having spent more than 3 decades in a creative profession, Kiran has come to believe that anything which unites us is creativity and anything which divides is destruction - “To create is to unite,” is his favourite catch-phrase which he strives to live by at all levels of mind, body and spirit.     True to his message, Kiran is always on lookout for opportunities to contribute, to pay-forward and to unite, whatever the context may be. He and his friends were instrumental in hosting Rock Climbing (Bouldering) World Cup in India in 2016 and 2017 with little government or corporate funding or support. Both years, India got voted as the best venue globally. His wife Rajashree is a profound animal lover. Her field work couple with Kiran's tech innovations led a wildlife researcher, Javed to discover many new species of spiders. Little did they know, that moved by gratitude Javed would name two species after them- Thelcticopis kirankhalapi and paraplectana rajashree. :) He also serves on the advisory board of Arpan, an NGO working towards freedom from child sexual abuse and Protsahan, an NGO that deploys creativity as a tool for healing for abused adolescent girls. Upon his return from Varanasi, seeing absence of Krishnaji’s book in college libraries, he initiated a program to buy the books and gifted it to many college libraries. Upon hearing of any difficulty or hardship faced by any employee, he is the first one to extend a helping hand and a caring shoulder. Perhaps chlorophyl is one of the rare organizations which lists all its past employees on the website, undoubtedly a teal organization. His books are his excuse to share his life learnings with the community and despite handling 4 jobs, he does his best to make himself available as a friend and a mentor to young minds.  Kiran will be in conversation with Rohit Rajgarhia. He is an alumnus of IIM Bangalore, and has worked deeply in the India's internet economy as an investment banker before he stepped out of corporate career to explore a life of simplicity and volunteerism.

In episode 540 of "Cool Things Entrepreneurs Do" Thom Singer talks about the business of speaking and the meetings industry in the face of the spread of the Coronavirus. While live meetings bring people together, in the face of a possible pandemic, many companies and associations are canceling their conferences.  This impacts more than the hosts and the attendees.  There are many types of vendors (maybe about 50 per event) that earn their living from serving live events.   Speakers, hotels, transportation, meeting planning companies, catering, bars, restaurants, bands, DJs, sign makers, etc... are all part of what makes a meeting amazing. When meetings cancel the economic impact can have a giant ripple effect.    But this virus can impact all kinds of business, and Thom encourages entrepreneurs to be thinking about what this means.  Entrepreneurs are problem solvers.... and this virus could become a big problem that will impact the whole world.  Not just in getting people sick, but in hurting the global economy.   Thom shares and idea he had in a brainstorming call with a client who is worried about their association annual meeting being canceled or having low attendance.  His idea is for her to create a branded podcast and interview all 50 speakers (keynote speakers and breakout speakers) to create individual episodes.  Not just webinar data dumps, but in-depth interviews and conversations on their important topics.    He also shares a couple of emails he has received this week about the virus and how one company he knows, BigSpeak, sent a wonderful reminder to speakers to not panic.  That the meetings industry and speaking business have faced health and other disruptive events in the past.  They also provided simple things to pay attention to for health and business.  Thom sees a lot of "hype" out there, but appreciates companies and people who are providing value in a noisy Coronavirus world.   Check out this episode of his podcast and share it with a friend if they need an upbeat message in a scary time.   https://thomsinger.com/podcast/canceled-meetings-and-podcasts

Business is one of those aspects of practice that many new practitioners approach with a not small amount of fear and loathing. Business is often viewed as something bothersome and takes away from focusing on our practice. But the truth is, just like there is a false dichotomy between mind and body, the idea that business is somehow separate from our practice not only is not helpful, but cuts us off from all kinds of creativity and learning. In this conversation we use the entrepreneurial mindset to discover solutions and opportunities where previously you might have only seen obstacles and annoyance. As an independent, a full time indie-entrepreneur, a maker of things that sell, a creator of my own wealth, a designer of my own creativity over time, I feel a strong call to do more things my way for the results I want. Which, for many of us, seems to beg this question: **can you give more of yourself over to being a creator?** Often times I hear it referred to as *“pursuing completely”* — like, how completely are you pursuing your thing? I think this plays solidly into that dream of being an artist who abandons herself to her work. Like, many of us really, if we're honest, feel like we should have that kind of abandon, conviction, sold-out-ness to the thing we're pursuing. Right? **BUT, what if pursuing that thing is putting other things in our life in jeopardy? ** What if we want to pursue our blogging more *completely*, BUT our blogging isn't contributing to our financial needs yet. We want to give blogging more time because maybe that's what's necessary for us to even get to a place where we can generate revenue, BUT, spending more time there may take away from the job that IS earning us revenue, or our family or other relationships that might be good for us to keep in tact as well. **So, today we are going to talk about this:** how much are you pursuing your thing *AND* how much *SHOULD ANY OF US* pursue our thing? Should we leap with abandon and trust the universe and the intention of our hearts to construct the solution in real time? Or does being cautious really give us a better chance at success? Jodie Newman, author of Business Creativity - A Practical Guilde explains how creativity impacts our success in business and why you don’t have to be an ideas person to leverage creativity to surpass your competition. For resources mentioned in this interview visit: www.abn.org.au/herbusiness/creative Often we think of creativity with some romance, as artistic. And that alone has some of us label ourselves creative (e.g. I’m an ideas person), and others, not. Jodie describes creativey as a process that takes practice and which anyone can take advantage of. Jodie also outlines how small business owners, especially those that work on their own can generate, harness and implement creative ideas that help them compete effectively.
