Seven years on from the Grenfell Tower Fire that claimed 72 lives on 14 June 2017, the disappointing blame game that has arisen in the built environment has delivered one sobering home truth – the lack of accountability, leadership and responsibility in the sector. This latest, two-part feature of the BE Sustainable follows on from our previous conversation with UCEM's Vice Chancellor Ashley Wheaton on the purpose of the built environment. This month, Mike Speight is joined by Dame Judith Hackitt and Marc Fleming, and together they dive deeper into how this lack of uniform identity is playing out in the industry today. This episode explores the challenge the sector faces in balancing the demands of clients, the requirements of regulation and the needs of end users, and how the latter should be at the forefront of all construction and build environment professionals' minds. The topics discussed in this episode include:- Does the built environment understand its purpose and its responsibility? And if not, what is this purpose?- How do we balance the demands of the client with the needs of society, all whilst conforming with regulation?- How can we encourage the sector to think more about the end user?- Is it possible to bring about broad, holistic change in the sector?Listen to the podcast via: - Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ucem/id1524980861- Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3Czk2mZlZmknjUZfwLmLTa - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/universitycollegeofestatemanagement Guests:Dame Judith HackittDame Judith is a chemical engineer by training. This former chemical engineer turned financial advisor breaks down investing into simple terms that even a 5th grader could understand. In this candid conversation with executive coach Mike O'Neill, Glen shares why most people focus on the wrong things when investing. His most controversial take? Stock prices only matter twice - when you buy and when you sell. Everything else is noise.Glen's practical wisdom comes from 32 years of helping clients build wealth, sparked by an unexpected career change during an oil industry downturn. His engineering background gives him a unique perspective on financial planning, focusing on facts rather than emotions.Key insights from the episode:Why real estate isn't as liquid as most people thinkThe 4 main categories where you can invest your moneyHow dividends can make a "boring" stock incredibly valuableWhy media hysteria about economic data usually doesn't matterThe importance of taking the long view - beyond your own lifetimeMike guides the conversation masterfully, drawing out Glen's most valuable insights while keeping the discussion grounded in practical advice anyone can use. Their exchange about trust and perspective, using the analogy of a haircut, perfectly captures why having an outside viewpoint is crucial for both investing and leadership.Whether you're a seasoned investor or just starting out, this episode strips away the complexity of financial planning and focuses on what really matters - owning successful businesses for the long term.Find all the show notes and links here:  https://www.unstuck.show/196

It actually increases BDNF, which is neuroplasticity, meaning the resilience and malleability of your brain to take on new tasks. It's increasing blood flow to the brain, nitric oxide. It's increasing serotonin and dopamine, so you feel better, you feel more confident, you're more productive. And it's increasing glutathione and catalase, which are the key antioxidants, so it's reducing oxidative stress." – Shawn Wells  "You need a lot of magnesium every day to be fully energized because there's explosions. As we're talking, sitting here, there are just trillions of explosions happening in all of our mitochondria. So, to make energy, you have to have magnesium, you have to have oxygen, you actually have to have copper too, which a lot of people don't know about." – Barton Scott  Learn more about your ad choices. Has Matty Schirle Really Created Self Esteem In a Bottle? If you read the reviews of Matty Schirles' SkinKick line of skincare you might think they actually have created self esteem in a bottle. And You Likely Be Intrigued by an accidental finding in in Amazon by a scientist who went there for another reason   People are amazed at how quickly these Skinkick products clear their skin problems. We're talking blemishes, acne, acne scars and rosacea. Pretty much any skin condition that might make a person not feel so thrilled about their looks.  Matty Schirle said,  “When we got into the acne or the blemish category, the very first 14-year-old woman who used it stood up and said, we changed her life and she said you need to call it self-esteem in a bottle. That's basically because we deliver clear, healthy, glowing skin and the confidence that comes with that. And the beautiful thing is because we're natural, we can do that for problem skin and aging skin at the same time. “  Matty who is the Founder and CEO of SkinKick was a former Chemical Engineer. He and his SkinKick Chief Science Officer Dr. Bill Provance developed effective, simple and safe, Naturally Smart(R) formulas that are cruelty free and dermatologist approved clean and natural ingredients, from the nutrient rich Amazon Rainforest!   It's an Incredible story of SKIN CARE discovery FINDING BEAUTY IN THE BEAST  The Amazon is beautiful, but it's also dangerous. When SkinKick Chief Science Officer Dr. Bill Provance traveled to Brazil, he learned about a growing epidemic of parasitic diseases that plagued the native people. Not only did these parasites make people sick, but they also aggravated and inflamed the skin.  Armed with years of studying skin cell biology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Dr. Provance began searching for a way to create a natural “second skin” that would prevent rainforest parasites from penetrating the skin and entering the body.   THE A-HA MOMENT  Dr. Provance carefully tested a variety of botanicals on the skin of Brazil's native people. What he didn't expect to find was that all of the formulations he tested had a common result: overall improvement and appearance of the skin. He soon discovered that these formulations were leaving the skin smooth, hydrated, and clear. That's when Dr. Provance had an ah-ha moment. If this “second skin” could clear and beautify the skin of native Brazilians, perhaps it could do the same for others?   That got Matty Shirle's attention, and he then applied his knowledge and know-how to the findings from his 20+ years in the high technology semiconductor industry (computer chips). His mission was to figure out how to eliminate man-made chemicals including harsh acids that destroy the natural skin microbiome.  Dr. Provance and the SkinKick team began working on developing a skincare line that used the same natural ingredients to clear blemishes and renew the skin And SkinKick was born.  Matty said,   "Well Dr. Bill studied at UT Southwest Med Center here in Dallas and he took a job at the Viacruz Institute which is like the Harvard of Brazil. And so he, even though I'm a chemical engineer, you can move his IQs a few decimal points over from mine. He's just absolutely brilliant." "They had an issue with parasites entering the skin. And the fundamental start of this is when they thought he was going to come up with a vaccine. And what he did is identified a botanical that if you rub it on your arm, it keeps the parasites, like a mosquito or whatever it is, you know, small things from entering your skin." "Well, he flew back to Dallas and told the story of how he blocked the parasites, but he said, oh, by the way, that film that I rubbed on, you know, on your skin, it holds moisture under it."  And right off the bat, the lights go off, because the number one issue with aging, regardless of what you've been told, is that the skin cell can no longer hold as much moisture as it did when you were younger. And therefore, less moisture, once it goes down, then the collagen protein has a hard time surviving and it snaps and breaks and it loses its rigidity which is holding the cell up and that's what starts aging. We started as an anti-aging company but it's a skin renewal company and now we have clinical trials with all our key ingredients right out of the Amazon rainforest.” "These natural nutrients somehow clear, renew and protect the skin at the same time! “  Matty says Skinkick's naturally smart formulas are designed for all ages, genders and skin types even those with sensitive skin so everyone can have clear healthy and glowing skin. Their high-performance skincare clears, renews, and protects your skin without the use of harsh man-made chemicals typically found in popular brands. The secret is in their exclusive patent-protected technologies made with blends of supercharged botanicals. SkinKick even offers a ‘Happiness Guarantee' so that if you don't love your SkinKick order it's on them! So why aren't they everywhere?   They started to be, but Covid slammed them because Matty will admit he initially spent most of the money getting the brand into retail vs digital. A decision that's held them up. All entrepreneurial stories have their ups and downs… “I'm the chemical engineer that I can understand what Dr. Bill creates. But I'm not the creator I'm the guy that wrapped a P&L around this technology and brought it to market.” “We had an issue with driving the customer into the store. Well, didn't a lot of people have that issue during COVID? Yes. But anyhow, I take full responsibility with the digital marketing issue. Yep. I did not have the money to turn on both digital and retail. I focused on retail because Target Corporation incubated us right out of the gate in the Target takeoff incubator.” The brand landed on the shelves in Target and in CVS and Ulta beauty but without the marketing dollars nobody knew 'why' they should buy SkinKick among the giant number of skincare offerings.   Everybody Loves a Comeback Story “We had some snafu's and we're actually back in the gate getting funding. COVID literally knocked our wind out of us and almost knocked us over and almost killed us. But we're back, we're going to get funded and we're teed up ready to go."    Matty gets amazing testimonials every day in his email. He's driven to give everyone he can…self-esteem in a bottle of his SkinKick. I WAS DRIVEN to tell his story.   Thought some of you would like to know more about Matty Schirle and his SkinKick brand so I invited him to join The Debbie Nigro Show. Enjoy this podcast of our live conversation. PS I just ordered some to see for myself.

Roasting has historically been shaped by the experiences of crafts people and their experiments with what works, or does not work, in their roastery. These days we hav many people entering into the industry to affirm, challenge, and explore those dogmas in an effort to find the "why" behind the assumptions we have. Today's guest, Mark Al-Shemmeri is one of those people challenging dogma with data.  Mark is a chemical engineer who spent four years as a doctoral researcher (EngD) in the UK figuring out how to simulate coffee roasting in-silico, creating a digital twin of a coffee roaster. The data-driven approach meant a lot of roasting, analysis of the process and product and coding up of simulations to predict how different green coffees, in different roasters with different process conditions, transform during roasting. Mark also operates a nomadic roastery under the pseudonym 'dialect' - a name befitting for his engineering approach to coffee and his efforts to challenge the complexities entrained in the industry. In this episode we talk with mark about how as a chemical engineer he ended up also in professional coffee work, how his expertise has shaped his own approach to roasting, and a look into the experiments he has been running to explore the variables of coffee roasting in a quest to simplify the overly complex.  Links: https://www.instagram.com/kramalshemmeri/ https://medium.com/@markalshemmeri https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Mark-Al-Shemmeri https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=H-A07IcAAAAJ&hl=en   Related episodes: RoR #2: Exploring Quality Control w/ Spencer Turer of Coffee Enterprises RoR # 21 : Data, Community, and the Art of Roasting w/ U.S. Roasters Champion Andrew Coe of Elevator Coffee RoR #20 : Challenging the Status Quo w/ David Lalonde of Rabbit Hole Roasters, Montreal, Quebec Visit www.roastertools.com for the best software to help you run a roastery!

In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the flurry of Round 2 MBA application deadlines that dominate the beginning of January. On Tuesday at 12 pm ET, Clear Admit is hosting an event with CMU / Tepper, which focuses on its Data Analytics masters program. Signups are here: https://bit.ly/cmuanalytics Clear Admit is also hosting a Real Humans admissions event, scheduled for January 24 at 7 pm ET. This event will bring together students from a variety of top MBA programs, including NYU / Stern, Georgetown / McDonough and Washington / Foster, ready to answer questions from MBA aspirants. Signups for this event are here: https://bit.ly/carealhumans Graham highlighted two recently published admissions tips which focus on two key aspects related to finalizing the MBA admissions essays: word counts and essay polishing. One question that is becoming more obvious: how can we best use Generative AI in the essay writing and editing process? Graham then highlighted two Real Humans pieces that were recently published on Clear Admit, covering students from Yale SOM and Berkeley / Haas. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry: This week's first MBA admissions candidate has a very solid GMAT score of 730, but their GPA is a very troubling 2.5. They suffered from mental health issues during their undergraduate experience. Their long term goals are in the mental health space. They will need to address concerns surrounding the GPA in the optional essay; we think they really also need to take some additional coursework. This week's second MBA candidate has a very decent 720 GMAT score, and has a chemical engineering undergraduate degree, with a 3.67 GPA from their graduating University. We think there's a lot to like about this profile, but nothing that absolutely stands out. They might want to consider also exploring 1-2 more top 16 tier MBA programs. The final MBA candidate for this week is deciding between Columbia and Northwestern / Kellogg, while also applying to UPenn / Wharton and MIT / Sloan in Round 2. . They want to be on the east coast, after their MBA, with a focus on healthcare and pharma. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. Thanks to all of you who've been joining us and please remember to rate and review this show wherever you listen!

History is filled with women who've made enormous contributions to science. Alice Augusta Ball, a chemist, found a cure for leprosy. The first African American woman to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry, Marie Maynard Daly, discovered a connection between heart health and cholesterol back in 1955. Recently, viral immunologist Kizzmekia S. Corbett led a medical research team to develop the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. The impact women have made on science is life changing, but women are still underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) workforce. Listen back to a conversation MPR News host Angela Davis had with two Minnesota scientists, Bridgette Shannon and Jayshree Seth. They talked about what it's like to be a woman in the science field — overcoming barriers and finding success in their research and individual careers.  Both Shannon and Seth are scientists at 3M, a multinational conglomerate company headquartered in Minnesota. But outside their daily tasks, they both work to help motivate the next generation of scientists.  Shannon is the president of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers and works to diverse the STEM workforce through K-12 education. Seth is the author of two books, “The Heart of Science – Engineering Footprints, Fingerprints, & Imprints,” and “The Heart of Science: Engineering Fine Print.” Both books are published by the Society of Women Engineers, and sales benefit a scholarship for underrepresented minority women in STEM. Seth was also a speaker for Tedx Talks at St. Olaf College, where she spoke about her journey to becoming an advocate for diversity in STEM fields. Guests:  Bridgette Shannon is a chemist and a business development manager in 3M's Transportation and Electronics Business Group. She was the first African American woman to complete and earn a Ph.D. from the department of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Arkansas. Bridgette is the president of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers.  Jayshree Seth is a corporate scientist at 3M and the company's first chief science advocate. She joined 3M in 1993 and holds 80 patents for a variety of innovations. In 2020 she was awarded the highest Achievement Award by the Society of Women Engineers. She is the fourth woman — and first woman engineer — to be inducted into the Carlton Society – 3M's science and innovation “hall of fame.” Jayshree serves on the Board of the Science Museum of Minnesota. She holds a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Clarkson University.    Subscribe to the MPR News with Angela Davis podcast on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or RSS.  Use the audio player above to listen to the full conversation.

Corbett led a medical research team to develop the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. The impact women have made on science is life changing, but women are still underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) workforce. Two Minnesota scientists, Bridgette Shannon and Jayshree Seth, join MPR News host Angela Davis to talk about what it's like to be a woman in the science field — overcoming barriers and finding success in their research and individual careers. Both Shannon and Seth are scientists at 3M, multinational conglomerate company headquartered in Minnesota. But outside their daily work, they both work to help motivate the next generation of scientists. Shannon is the president of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers, and works to diverse the STEM workforce through K-12 education. In this week's MBA Admissions podcast Alex and Graham began by discussing a new survey that Clear Admit has launched, which investigates the media habits of MBA candidates. All participation is greatly appreciated; the survey is here: https://bit.ly/casummarysurvey Graham then noted a new Master in Management program offered by Chicago / Booth which led to a discussion of some of the more unusual formats being offered by leading programs for graduate management education. Graham then highlighted a Real Humans piece featuring an alum of Dartmouth / Tuck at Citi, and two Adcom Q&As from MIT / Sloan and Maryland / Smith. Graham and Alex also discussed the first Clear Admit+ webinar for this season, to be held later today (Monday, August 7th) at 12 pm ET. This webinar is open to all registered members of Clear Admit. As usual, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries: This week's first MBA admissions candidate has an outstanding profile, which includes a 3.99 GPA in chemical engineering. They are from Trinidad and Tobago and work as a process engineer. The one slightly weaker element of their candidacy is their 324 GRE. The score itself is decent, but relative to the rest of this profile, Alex and Graham think it could be better. One more retake might yield positive dividends. Candidate #2 has a very non-traditional profile, having worked extensively in the education sector. Their experience is very interesting, but key to their candidacy will be to show how the MBA makes perfect sense for what they plan to do post MBA. They are keen to apply in Round 1, but Alex and Graham think they should wait until Round 2, and retake the GRE, which is much lower than the median for the programs they are targeting. The final MBA candidate for this episode has another super profile all around. They have strong numbers (336 GRE, 3.68) and their work trajectory looks very interesting, going from research, to consulting to “doing”. They are planning to wait one more year to apply, but Alex wonders if it might make sense to target this season with a couple of reach programs, to see what happens. his episode was recorded in Philadelphia, PA and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. Thanks to all of you who've been joining us and please remember to rate and review this show wherever you listen!

Health and Safety Conversations

This week on the conversation a real treat as Professor Andrew Hopkins joins the conversation. One of my favourite authors and one of those people who I never thought I would have the opportunity to talk to, this conversation is one of the highlights of the show so far. I know you will enjoy it, I know you will learn from it, and I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. Andrew was an expert witness at the Royal Commission into the 1998 Exxon gas plant explosion near Melbourne. He was a consultant to the US Chemical Safety Board in its investigation of the BP Texas City Refinery disaster of 2005, and also for its investigation into the BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill of 2010. Welcome to the 300th episode of the Clear Admit MBA Admissions podcast! Thank you for tuning in and helping us reach this landmark recording.  A very special thanks to everyone who sent in audio clips with well wishes to mark the occasion too; these clips were mixed into episode #300 to ensure a very celebratory vibe! Getting down to business, this week's episode kicks off with Alex and Graham basking in the milestone of recording so many podcasts.  Graham then highlighted three Adcom Q&As, from Chicago / Booth, NYU / Stern, and ASU / Carey. Graham also discussed the July event series, Essay Insights, which began last week (with a record number of attendees!); this Wednesday we will hear from Chicago / Booth, Dartmouth / Tuck, UPenn / Wharton and UVA / Darden. This is a very popular series that runs throughout July and early August; signups are here: https://bit.ly/cambaessay As usual, your hosts tackled three candidate profile reviews drawn from three recent ApplyWire entries: Up first is a candidate who served in the military for seven years before transitioning to a consulting role with Accenture. He has a 3.4 GPA, but Alex and Graham worry about the relatively low GRE score of 306. It will be important to really try to improve this score, especially on the quant side. It also makes sense to look at MBA Math, HBS CORe or GMAC's Business Fundamentals. This week's second candidate is still early in his career and looking to apply in one or two years' time. He has a strong GPA, and Alex and Graham are hoping he can also attain a very good GMAT score. The candidate is not fulfilled with his current career situation and is assessing his options in terms of which direction to go. Of the choices offered, Alex and Graham think moving to the crypto startup makes most sense. This week's final candidate is a chemical engineer with a strong academic record through to the masters level. They also appear to have great work experience, and are focused on issues that are important (climate tech). We hope they can deliver a strong test score, and will be appealing to the very best MBA programs. This episode was recorded in Philadelphia, PA and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. Thanks to all of you who've been joining us and please remember to rate and review this show wherever you listen!

This is a surprise mini-episode as part of a fun series where I introduce you to other wonderful podcasts that might bless and benefit your life.  These shows are all produced by or part of the podcast network that I am apart of, Cloud10 Media. It has been so rewarding for me to collaborate with other podcasters who are working hard to get their important messages out into the world.  The show I am featuring today is called Motherhood Meets Medicine. The Motherhood Meets Medicine Podcast is a space that brings all women together. It's for those who hope to be a mom one day, those who are already mothers, and mothers of mothers. The host, Lynzy, is a Physician Assistant in the Emergency Department where she has practiced medicine for the last 12 years. She brings in experts with formal training to cover everything about motherhood ranging from postpartum issues to feeding babies to managing toddler tantrums. This podcast provides candid, informal interviews that you can listen to while you're driving to work, folding laundry or whatever else your busy day may bring. For today's mini-episode, we are airing a clip with an interview from Chemical Engineer and Food Scientist, Erin, or “Food Science Babe” as she's known throughout her social media channels. As a mom, do you ever feel confused about what you should be feeding your kids? The health and wellness industry can sometimes feel very fear-based, and it's nice to get a breakdown from a professional on what's actually happening. In this clip, Erin discusses what's required to label foods organic and debunking the myth that food grown organically are always safer or more nutritious.  You are going to want to listen this excerpt from the Motherhood Meets Medicine podcast, and then head on over to their feed to listen to the entire episode! **Listen to the full episode here, and subscribe to Motherhood Meets Medicine here.
