Kadabra In 2020, a year wrecked with cultural dissent and a global pandemic, fellow musicians and long-time friends Garrett Zanol and Ian Nelson decided to create a band that would pull influence from a few of their favorite musical acts. After retaining the talents of their favorite local drummer Chase Howard, the group got to work on writing an album that illustrates their current climate. Kadabra from Spokane, Washington U.S., delivers the eerie psyche crawl of acts like Dead Meadow and the heavy fuzzed riff grime of Pentagram. In fall the of 2020, they tracked their debut album “Ultra” with Dawson Scholz, and it is set to release this fall on Heavy Psych Sounds Records https://www.instagram.com/kadabra_band/ https://kadabraband.bandcamp.com/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/417aOjBth2dpiWzOqFWaDd?si=LsbuCZoJQZOeFbXVcm892w Warlung Founded in 2016, former members of Houston's The Dead Revolt and Rivers joined forces to push the limits of song writing and creativity. Cough, cough, cough, Merry Kyuss-mas! Diary of Doom is closing out 2022 with our seemingly omnipresent guest, August West, by talking about a band that nobody has ever heard of before: Kyuss. After paying tribute to our friend, John Hopkins, and his mother, Reita, and running through some of their favorite albums of the year (highlighting Steve Albini's love for Dead Meadow), the dank duo delves into the short but sweet discography of one of the cornerstone bands of heavy music, touching on how exactly to say Kyuss, why legal battles suck the air out of bands, Kyuss Lives!, petition for John Garcia to front Danzig, how many Allen wrenches they have laying around, and a five-way battle of "Yeah!" Oh, and Dylan nearly passed out (again!) at some recent concerts. Albums covered: Sons of Kyuss (1990) Wretch (1991) Blues for the Red Sun (1992) Welcome to Sky Valley (1994) ...And the Circus Leaves Town (1995) Hope everybody is braving the cold right now and has a safe and happy new year!

Steve Albini (born July 22, 1961) is an American musician, record producer, audio engineer and music journalist. He was a member of Big Black, Rapeman and Flour, and is a member of Shellac. He is the founder, owner and principal engineer of Electrical Audio, a recording studio complex in Chicago. In 2018, Albini estimated that he had worked on several thousand albums over his career. He has worked with acts such as Nirvana, Pixies, the Breeders and PJ Harvey. Albini is also known for his outspoken views on the music industry, having stated repeatedly that it financially exploits artists and homogenizes their sound, as well as the flaws in the digital recording process and the superiority of analog technology. Albini's engineering skills have been celebrated for their sense of space, naturalistic tone, and the power of his guitar and drum sounds; his own guitar work is as imaginatively abrasive as his lyrics, which can be challenging and sometimes confrontational. Nearly alone among well-known producers and musicians, Albini refuses to take ongoing royalties from album sales, feeling that a producer's job is to record the music to the band's desires, and that paying producers as if they had contributed artistically to an album is unethical. In this episode, part one of a series of two, all songs selected by Steve Albini as guest for Australian TV show Rage, on June 29 2013.

Dead Meadow's buzzy wash of words and jams make this music for lighting up incense in a dark room and just chilling with a bottle of bourbon (or other preferred mind-altering substance). Nearly two decades and six albums along, Dead Meadow’s singer/guitarist Jason Simon, bassist Steve Kille and on-again-off-again drummer Mark Laughlin are self-recording their seventh album when they’re not on tour. Laughlin’s lawyer day job keeps him from the road, meaning Juan Londono of the Strangers Family Band is filling in for this trek to South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. Jason Simon performs a solo acoustic session for WCPO Lounge Acts.

If you wanted to describe Bezoar, you could throw out terms like heavy and doomy and psychedelic and stoner and experimental. And you could point out some similarities to Electric Wizard or Dead Meadow or Swans. But that really does a disservice to Bezoar, whose raison d'être is to defy those types of labels and comparisons. In this episode, the trio gives us an exclusive on a new track, plays a cut from their most recent LP, and shares some material from the bands they were part of in the early 2000s.
