Florida’s Department of Health reported relatively good news — there were only 2,678 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday. That’s the lowest number of cases in a day since the middle of June; 576,000 Floridians have been infected so far during the pandemic. Also, on today’s Sunrise: — The state is reporting 87 more fatalities Monday, bringing the coronavirus death toll to 9,647. And Gov. Ron DeSantis says the key indicators are headed in the right direction. — But those trends may be in jeopardy now that schools are welcoming kids back to the classroom. New cases have been linked to the reopening of schools in several counties; Professor Sarah Matthews says more closings are inevitable. — Andrew Spar with the Florida Education Association will discuss the specter of COVID-19 in the classroom, along with the micromanaging by education commissioner Richard Corcoran. — It’s primary day in Florida, and polls are open until 7 p.m. If you requested a vote-by-mail ballot and haven’t mailed it yet, make sure you drop it at the nearest elections office in person if you want it to count. The U.S. Postal Service is having all sorts of problems and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Shultz says it’s all because of Donald Trump. — And checking-in with two Florida Men, who are having problems with Florida Women.
Jen Perelman is challenging former head of the Democratic National Committee and current Florida 23rd congressional district representative Debbie Wasserman Shultz in a primary election on August 18th. Wasserman Shultz has held the Florida congressional seat since 2004 and infamously was the head of the Democratic National Committee, when she resigned after Wikileaks released emails revealing party officials https://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/25/us/politics/debbie-wasserman-schultz-dnc-wikileaks-emails.html (sabotaging the campaign) of Bernie Sanders in the 2016 primary. Backed by Brand New Congress and former presidential candidates Andrew Yang and Marianne Williamson, Jen supports a progressive economic agenda of $2000 a month universal basic income, as well as Medicare for All and a Green New Deal. This interview is part of ourEconomy's series on the https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/oureconomy/us-election/ (US election).
Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran is ordering public schools to fully reopen in August, regardless of the COVID-19 crisis. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Shultz says that’s unwise — and unconstitutional. Also, on today’s Sunrise: — Gov. Ron DeSantis travels to Miami to announce the state is sending 100 nurses to help with the region’s spike in COVID-19. He claims it wouldn’t be a problem is Floridians would only follow his game plan. — However, the Governor’s guidelines were not mandatory, and Democrats in Florida’s Congressional delegation say it’s time for DeSantis to grow a spine. Congresswoman Donna Shalala says his meek guidelines put lives at risk. — The Democrats #1 ask of the Governor is a mandatory mask rule, something he would rather leave to local officials. Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Giménez has already made them mandatory in his county, which is now facing the worst surge in the state. — But Gimenez has now walked back a couple of the new restrictions — including those imposed on gyms and restaurants in his county. The Miami Herald describes it as “moonwalking.” — Checking-in with a Florida Man arrested for drunken driving on a lawnmower.
Fred Guttenberg is the father of Jaime Guttenberg, who was tragically killed in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida two years ago. It was Valentine's Day, 2018, and as he tells us on the podcast, just another normal day for him. Making sure his kids got to school on time was his top priority, and sadly, as we all now know, that day completely turned his life upside down. The Parkland Shooting was the deadliest high school shooting in American history, and it jolted America out of our collective jadedness and inaction. The March For Our Lives movement was born out of the tragedy, and Fred Guttenberg has now made it his mission in life to pass constitutional common-sense gun safety reform and break the back of the gun lobby. The movement's accomplishments include passing "Red Flag" laws in states around the country, where if a troubled individual is showing dangerous signs and owns firearms, they can be confiscated by the authorities. Guttenberg is also a major proponent of Universal Background Checks on all firearm sales, and he wishes to extend background checks to ammunition sales as well. Appropriately titled after his daughter, "Jaime's Law" would do just that. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Shultz and Senator Richard Blumenthal jointly introduced Jaime's Law, which would require background checks on the sale of ammunition, into the US House of Representatives and US Senate in March of 2019. Fred also has become a vocal supporter of Vice President Joe Biden's campaign for President. On this episode of the podcast, we dig deeper into Fred's story, how he's coping with his new normal, his fight against the gun lobby, and his personal relationship with Joe Biden following the murder of his daughter. Fred can be found on Twitter @Fred_Guttenberg, Nathan can be found @NathanHRubin, and Sam can be found @JeskeSam
Gov. DeSantis is once again refusing to issue any sort of statewide lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus — despite the number of confirmed fatalities rising to 18. Also, on today’s Sunrise: — DeSantis is under attack for his failure to act on coronavirus. Democrats are lining up to unload on the Governor: Donna Shalala, Debbie Wasserman Shultz and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. — If you were among the thousands of Floridians who tried to file for unemployment online, chances are you received an error message. Calling the helpline, you got a recording. The Department of Economic Opportunity is trying. — Florida’s award-winning state park system is closed for the duration. They tried to limit crowds, but that didn’t work. So, a shutdown is now in effect. — Sen. Scott says forget the corporate bailouts: what people need is a moratorium on rent, mortgage payments, and utility bills. A group called the Florida Housing Justice Alliance loves the idea, and they’re asking the Governor to run with it — The latest from Florida man, which has one story with absolutely nothing at all to do with the virus — think of it as a psychic palate cleanser.
On Saturday, February 22nd 2020, I covered a protest at the Marriott Hotel and Convention Center in Coral Springs, Florida. The crowd of a few dozen largely conservative demonstrators organized in opposition to an Imam named Siraj Wahhaj who was selected to be the keynote speaker at the annual ICNA (Islamic Circle of North America) Relief Banquet. Wahhaj was an unindicted co-cospirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing in NYC. The protest was arranged by Joe Kaufman, 3-time Congressional Republican Nominee in Florida’s District 23, running again Debbie Wasserman-Shultz. Joe began his speech by listing the names of the six people murdered in the 1993 WTC attack. Here’s Joe Kaufman, followed by three speeches by and breif interviews with Laura Loomer, Deepak Ganju and Shlomo Nizahon. Enjoy.

Phillip Jerez is a former teacher who got involved in local politics as a way of trying making a greater impact outside the classroom. That led him to stints working for Rep. Debbie Wasserman Shultz resigns as DNC chair and for good reason. Which Email do YOU think is the most damaging to the Democrats and the Hillary Clinton Campaign? Barry Nussbaum discusses Debbie Wasserman Shultz and the DNC.
One of the things I hate most about politicians is when they're asked a direct question and instead of giving a direct response they reframe the question and answer what the question they wanted to be asked. Nobody does this better than Bernie Sanders. He plays the role of a curmudgeonly old man perfectly. In the most recent PBS debate both Hillary and Bernie spent most of the night ducking questions about how big government should be and what should be cut. Both of them are advocates for a host of "free" government handouts from health care to college. PBS did a decent job of asking questions but as usually fell flat on follow-up.When will the media in this country stand up and call these slimy liars in suits out on their cowardice? The media is supposed to help defend liberty by pointing out lies and corruption not only in the private sector but government as well. The 1st amendment was primarily a protection from government and what have they done with it? They've corrupted it as well.Anyway, enough of my ranting. We've got lots of funny responses from Hillary, Bernie, and we even have own from Debbie Wasserman Shultz regarding the delegate disaster in New Hampshire. It's a great way to end the week. Enjoy.JasonSupport the show.
