Movie Star Great Dane's Owner Helps Educate the Public Host Laura Reeves is joined by Bev Klingensmith, breeder, owner and trainer of the canine star of the new movie, The Friend. [caption id="attachment_14029" align="alignleft" width="671"] Bev Klingensmith and Bing on set filming The Friend.[/caption] Klingensmith's dog, Bing, CH Flighty Foto White Christmas CD RA CA DCAT TKI CGC TT, plays the part of the Harlequin Great Dane in the movie which stars Naomi Watts and Bill Murray, about a solitary writer who adopts and bonds with a Great Dane that belonged to a late friend, helping her to come to terms with her past and her own creative inner life. Bing is Klingensmith's fourth generation of homebred Great Danes, starting in the late ‘90s. “The production company actually sent an e-mail to me back in January of 2020. When I first got the e-mail I deleted it. People, I've told that story and people ask if I thought it was a scam or fake. And I'm like, no, I just didn't think it was realistic for me. They're talking filming in New York. I live in Iowa. And then I was like, you know, I do have lots of friends on the East Coast with Danes. Maybe I can help point them in the right direction, give them some contacts at least. That was really my only initial reason to reach back out.” Klingensmith is very aware of concerns about the risks posed by purebred dogs appearing in movies and has used the movie as a platform for education about her beloved breed. “I worked with the production team and we put a piece in the credits encouraging folks to visit the Great Dane Club of America's website for breeder referrals and rescue contacts. I have worked with a few rescues for fundraising. We've done so many Q&A events and things like that. And that is one of the things I always hit on is Great Danes are not for everyone. “They are not couch potatoes. They're giant, their expenses are giant. If you choose to get a Great Dane, where you get the Great Dane is so important. It's not just selecting the right breed for your home. It's also selecting where to get that dog. And that's almost more important than selecting the right breed. And that's been a huge statement that I've been trying to make over and over to the public and fingers crossed the message gets out there. “One of the things I like to point out, he is a champion. He's purposely bred, carefully bred, thoughtfully bred with generations of all the same behind him. That none of that has happened by chance. His temperament and his behavior, none of it has happened by chance. “I try to stress that to people as much as I can because we're talking about where you get your dog is so important. I told people a lot, ignorance and apathy, they're both really bad traits to have in a breeder. I might love my dog, but if I don't know what I'm doing, I'm still gonna be a bad breeder unintentionally. And that's just as damaging as the breeders that don't care.”

Buying a charming 1912 fixer-upper sounded romantic—until the bathroom door opened itself, heavy footsteps prowled the halls, and the family Great Dane growled at thin air – it seems some houses never really let you live alone. Things got worse: a midnight TV power-off nobody ordered, and a bedroom closet door that shook like it wanted a rematch with gravity—before creaking open on absolutely nothing at all. Add one blood-curdling scream from upstairs and a minute-long door-quake, and you've got a couple who learned there's a mortgage… and then there's whatever still thinks it owns the place. Happy Friday, yo! Busy weekend ahead with a Pat McCurdy show at the Alpine Inn, the 21st Annual Beer, Wine, & Cheese Fest tomorrow, and my 12th wedding anniversary on Sunday. I think I need a nap. In the news this morning, the latest on the "Baby Angel" case, a man who brought a gun to a school in Eau Claire yesterday, Drug Take Back Day is happening tomorrow around the state, some possible severe weather could be heading our way on Monday, and some new food items available at the Fiserv Forum during the Bucks playoff run. In sports, the Brewers blew it against the Giants last night and held a closed-door meeting after the game to try & figure things out. We talked about the top picks in last night's NFL Draft from Green Bay, WI. And we discussed the Packers' pick at #23. Plus, the scores from yesterday's NBA & NHL games, and a look ahead at tonight's slate of playoff action in both the NBA & NHL. Elsewhere in sports, the Bucks are down 0-2 to the Pacers in their first round series, but decided that yesterday was the best time to announce that they are extending their GM's contract. And Katherine Legge is calling out people for sending her death threats on social media. Doc joined us to talk racing just after 8am this morning thanks to County Materials in Holmen. We let you know what's on TV this weekend and what's new in theaters. Plus, some new music releases you might want to check out. Funny video going viral of a Great Dane who's not too pleased with his vet, and another video went viral of a girl who was just looking for some feedback on her prom dress but got a lot more than she asked for in return. America's latest "health risk" is in the form of paper receipts! EVERYONE PANIC!!!!!!!!!!!!! Check out this 5 Hour Energy/hot sauce collab with Taco John's. I think I'll pass. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a manager at a Sonic restaurant that gave a gummie to an underage employee, a new scratch-n-sniff billboard in NYC, a woman in North Carolina who stole over $13,000 worth of merchandise from a couple of Bath & Body stores in the area, a kid who tried to poison his mother by pouring bleach in her milk, another reason to avoid flying, Bonnie Blue turning down an offer to make some money, and another teacher who got fired for being on OnlyFans.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Gary Cohen lost his Great Dane, who lived 13 years. They are only supposed to live 6-8 years. This led to Phil talking about calling and feeding the foxes. We heard Steve Gelbs on the call (in for Gary Cohen), as Lindor hit the walk off Friday night.
Phil Simms joined the show to preview the NFL draft, offering his perspective on Aaron Rodgers' final meeting with the Jets, suggesting Rodgers might be waiting to see the Vikings' QB situation in training camp. Phil also reflected on learning about the Giants moving on from him, while Boomer shared his awkward Jets exit. Jerry's update led with the Mets' four-game sweep of the Cardinals, highlighted by Francisco Lindor's two home runs. The passing of Gary Cohen's unusually long-lived Great Dane prompted Phil to discuss calling and feeding foxes. The Knicks won game one against the Pistons with a 21-0 run, and the Devils lost their game one to the Hurricanes. In the final segment, Phil discussed what the Giants should and might do with the third draft pick, also mentioning quarterbacks Sanders, Dart, and Shough.
Hour 1 Boomer's back from the flu but not at full strength. The Mets had a great, well-attended weekend, pleasing Steve Cohen. The Knicks won game one against the Pistons but didn't impress, with Detroit already complaining about Jalen Brunson's foul drawing; the Knicks did have a 21-0 run. In baseball news, Max Fried lost a no-hitter due to a later-ruled error by Paul Goldschmidt, and an Aaron Judge HR was overturned, leading to Aaron Boone's ejection. The Mets swept the Cardinals in four games. Jerry's highlights included the Knicks' win and the Devils' game one loss to the Hurricanes. Finally, we discussed Aaron Rodgers' thoughts on the Jets meeting, a topic missed last week due to Boomer's absence. Hour 2 Phil Simms joined the show to preview the NFL draft, offering his perspective on Aaron Rodgers' final meeting with the Jets, suggesting Rodgers might be waiting to see the Vikings' QB situation in training camp. Phil also reflected on learning about the Giants moving on from him, while Boomer shared his awkward Jets exit. In the final segment, Phil discussed what the Giants should and might do with the third draft pick, also mentioning quarterbacks Sanders, Dart, and Shough. Hour 3 Phil Simms discussed NFL draft prospects, explaining why Shedeur Sanders' draft stock might fall due to NFL evaluations. A caller asked about Will Howard, whom Phil wasn't keen on. Jerry's update included Al's 64th birthday song for Boomer, and a mention of Phil's upcoming 70th. They reminisced about their 2007 draft show, where they goofed on JaMarcus Russell. Dave Sims' calls were featured for odd Yankees plays. The Mets' four-game sweep was highlighted, as was Mike Francesa's old "we have a pope" clip, coinciding with Pope Francis's passing. Thibs commented on the Knicks' game one win, and Justin Thomas's emotional RBC Heritage victory was noted. Phil and Boomer shared anecdotes of mentioning each other in speeches, and then they discussed the Jets signing Justin Fields. Hour 4 Phil Simms discussed the Jets' likely offensive lineman pick at number seven in the NFL draft, noting Travis Hunter and Abdul Carter as his top two players, suggesting Hunter as a WR. Boomer predicted a Kirk Cousins trade, with Phil speculating on his destination. Phil mentioned the Steelers' apparent focus on Aaron Rodgers and suggested the Giants need seven wins for Brian Daboll to stay. Jerry's final update covered the Yankees' controversial Aaron Judge home run call, the Mets' sweep of the Cardinals with Juan Soto's positive fan reception, and Francisco Lindor's observation of increased fan attendance. Boomer had a message for Devils fans as the Moment of the Day. In the last segment, Phil highlighted other notable draft prospects.

We couldn't have imagined a more random episode to leave you with before spring break, but hopefully there's a little something for everyone here at Breakfast All Day. We begin with "The Friend," a warm and wise drama about grief, healing, and a 150-pound Great Dane. We don't totally agree on how well this movie works, but the dog is amazing. Starring Naomi Watts, Bill Murray, Carla Gugino and Ann Dowd. In theaters. Next up is the four-part anthology "Freaky Tales," from "Captain Marvel" filmmakers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, returning to their indie roots. Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Dominique Thorne and Too $hort are among the stars of this intertwined homage to 1987 Oakland. In theaters. Finally, we catch up with "Holland," but you're welcome to avoid it. Nicole Kidman, Matthew Macfadyen and Gael García Bernal star in this overly familiar dark comedy about secrets lurking beneath the pristine veneer of small-town America. Streaming on Prime Video. No news this week because Christy's on vacation. But if you're a member of our Patreon, keep an eye out for our recap of "The White Lotus" season finale on Monday morning. Thanks for being here! "The Friend" had its world premiere at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its performances from Naomi Watts, Bill Murray, and the Great Dane Bing, and the writing and direction from filmmakers Scott McGehee & David Siegel that made audiences laugh and cry. Based on the 2018 novel by Sigrid Nunez, the film tells the story of a New York City writer who reluctantly inherits a Great Dane named Apollo from her dearly departed friend but soon comes to realize it may be the best thing that's ever happened for her in order to move on from her grief. McGehee & Siegel were both kind enough to speak with me about their work on the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from Bleecker Street. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Chelsea Elizabeth grew up with dogs in the family and is a lover of Great Danes, and rescue dogs. In August 2023, something snapped in her recent rescue dog and it brutally attacked her, leading to her near death experience (NDE). She saw and felt a bright light. She felt as if she were floating. She experienced white noise and peace with no pain or fear. While riding in the ambulance, Chelsea awoke to find a woman holding her hand. This was in addition to the EMS riding with her. It was later verified to her that there was no woman in the ambulance, at least not that anyone else could see. She received comfort from the woman and from flashbacks of her life as a small child. This NDE changed Chelsea's whole perspective on life. Now, family is the most important thing in the world to her. She has learned that death is not scary, it's beautiful and peaceful. ______________________Video versions of this podcast: https://www.youtube.com/@roundtripdeathRoundTripDeath.comDonate to this podcast: https://www.roundtripdeath.com/support/

David Kennis emailed a photo: "It was a pleasure to hear my first episode tonight why walking our dogs Bella the Great Dane and Thorin the Great Pyrenees Mix. The episode was #684. The Friel Sisters were the focus. Here in Ames, Iowa it happens that we have a Friel Drive. It isn't as lovely as the Friel Sister's voices and the instrumentation which accompanies them. You asked for a picture of what we are doing while listening. Mine is attached." Mike Sigler emailed a couple photos: “Hi Mark, Mike Sigler here. I've been listening to your podcast regularly for a while now and have been meaning to write for almost as long. So what have I been up to: I've been running sound for a little Celtic music dinner concert series at The Old Brogue Falls Church Virginia, one of the several Irish pubs in the Washington DC area. The series runs in the Fall and the Spring and consists of two dinner seatings and a wonderful performance of Celtic music. I've been running sound for them for about two years (a new skill for me) and have been having a blast. I've attached pictures of the groups from the last two concerts, one by Jug of Punch (Pat Egan (Guitar), Sharon Knowles (Harp), Tabby Finchan (Key Board), John Knowles (Fiddle)) and the other by Charlie Zahm and Tadd Marks. We've got three more concerts coming up this fall and I'm very much looking forward to them. Thanks for all you do – your show keeps reminding me to play and engage where I can (even if I seem to always find out about the local festivals only after they are over!). Best," Jeremiah Donier emailed an image: "Marc, I love your podcast and music. After visiting your merch website today and getting a free CD, I think you can use more designs. Attached is something I created based on the "Some Like it Scot" photo by Rich Johnson, https://www.pinterest.com/pin/176766354114786077/. I reached out to the photographer for his permission to design this and was given the okay. So, I wanted to create something fun and uplifting for the New Year with the saying "Up with Kilts! Down with Pants." I can add your logo too and whatever else you want to see (except for what's under the kilt of course - he he!). I can provide a vector file so it can be printed and scaled to whatever size is needed for the podcast's merchandise. This is free because I don't have much money to contribute, you give so much joy to the podcast listeners, and it is my small way of saying thanks for being so wonderful. Let me know what you think. Sláinte!"
Realizing that he had made a tragic mistake by ending his engagement to Regine Olsen, the Great Dane, Soren Kierkegaard, wrote in his journal, "To live without love is a mistake for which there is no reparation, either in this life or in the life to come." Successful coupling is more difficult in modern times when we no longer need a spouse for the basics of survival but, in the end, falling in love was never really about survival. It is about meaning, and who couldn't use more meaning in life, along with a little coffee and poetry?
For such a limited number of years (he's only 27 years old), Mortenn Christiansen has accomplished what some take a lifetime to achieve. For as long as he can remember, he has worked in a magic shop in Denmark. He has “cut his teeth” on stage at comedy clubs as he refined a unique style in his country. In 2022 he won the coveted Comedy Award at FISM in Quebec, Canada. Since then, he has been “hot as a skyrocket” having performed on Penn & Teller Fool Us, and he has lectured and performed at the 2023 Magicfest and later that year at MAGIC Live! If you are more of a visual person, then you might enjoy watching a video of this week's episode on YouTube. View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize One of the things that Mortenn talks about in his lecture is his stage fright. In this week's episode, he goes into much detail about that issue and how he deals with it by incorporating it into his act. He also gives us some “behind the scenes” looks at what it was like to come to Las Vegas and appear on Penn & Teller Fool Us. Josh has a knack for attracting the paranormal, whether it's at work or home. Working at Gibson's custom guitar shop—once a slaughterhouse—has brought its share of eerie feelings and unexplained malfunctions. But it doesn't stop there. As a teenager, a creepy video game brought nightmares, ominous presences, and even a chilling revelation from his religious aunt. Now, even in a house from the 1950s, closet doors open on their own, and his Great Dane seems to see what he can't. When Matt Meeker started sharing a Brooklyn apartment with a Great Dane, he didn't know it would inspire him to launch a multi-million dollar company. But, disappointed by what pet stores offered for big dogs like his, Matt co-founded BARK, a subscription service for dogs of all sizes. After launching in 2012, the brand expanded to include food, furnishings, and luxury charter flights, where dogs roam free about the cabin. Along the way, Matt applied critical lessons from his past startups, including a failed text-messaging company, and the social platform Meetup. This episode was produced by Devan Schwartz with music composed by Ramtin Arablouei. It's a blast from the past as Dale Earnhardt Jr. sits down with longtime NASCAR crew chief Tony Eury Sr. to talk about what he's been up to and their years together at Dale Earnhardt Inc. As the week kicked off with Dale Jr. announcing a Budweiser partnership to bring the iconic red, DEI-styled No. 8 car to the Florence 400 late model stock event, it was only fitting that he catches up with the man that was atop the pit box for the glory days. Tony explains that he has been working with his son Tony Eury Jr. at Fury Race Cars, where they stay active in late model and grass roots competition. They unpack Tony's years spent behind the wheel as a driver at Metrolina and Concord before his family ran out of funds to keep competing. Around this time, Tony was juggling the decision to work on Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s car for a living or continue his career at Great Dane Trailers. Ultimately, after he put enough time in to receive some retirement benefits, Tony left Great Dane and headed over to DEI full-time.Dale Jr. was eager to learn more about the decision to put him in a full-time Busch Series ride, to which Tony was instrumental in making it happen. Tony recalls having a conversation with Dale Sr. about the hire, and Tony suggested that instead of spending money on other drivers he should give Dale Jr. a chance. They also talk about capturing back-to-back Busch Series championships and making the jump to NASCAR Cup competition. Dale marvels at Tony's confidence that they would do well from the start, and Tony explains it was thanks to the team's long track record of success with other racers. The guys reflect on some of their favorite moments working together and how they got DEI's plate track program up to speed, becoming one of the most dominant forces in the modern Cup era.21+ and present in North Carolina.
