Chapter 131 is finally getting hot! Join Sophie, Sam, and Hannah as they argue over what latte means (again, because Hannah won't let it go), discuss why both Hunger Games tributes and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron have eyebrows, and rant about walkable cities and public transport for rich people.
Which young men should be sent to fight in Vietnam? Amidst a growing public outcry against the biases in the system, the United States instituted a live televised lottery draft on December 1st, 1969. In a sombre spectacle, plexiglass drums and capsules containing birthdates were drawn live on CBS, dictating the order in which men born on that day might be conscripted. Youth delegates participated to symbolize approval from the draftees' generation, but some refused to cooperate; one storming off live on air, others making peace signs or reading out protests during the broadcast. Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how this dystopian ‘Hunger Games' lottery came to be; consider the effect Vietnam the draft had on parenting and college statistics back home; and track their own birthdays to discover when they would have been drafted… Further Reading: • ‘Live From Washington, It's Lottery Night 1969!'

This week on The Intercept Briefing: What does it mean to work full-time in America and still not afford a place to live? We're resharing our conversation with journalist Brian Goldstone, whose new book “There Is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America,” examines this growing crisis. Goldstone's book — a finalist for the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction — reveals how people holding down jobs are increasingly living in their cars, motels, shelters, or on the streets. This episode originally aired August 29, 2025.Episode Description: Homeless sweeps have become the go-to, bipartisan performance of “doing something” about the U.S. housing crisis — a spectacle embraced by Democrats and Republicans, city halls, and the White House alike. But sweeps are not a solution. They're a way to make homelessness less visible while the crisis deepens. The roots stretch back decades. President Ronald Reagan's Tax Reform Act of 1986 pulled the federal government out of building and maintaining public housing, paving the way for a fragmented patchwork scheme of vouchers and tax credits. The result is the system we live with today — one that does little to stem the tide.Last year, more than 700,000 people were officially counted as homeless, the highest number ever recorded. Nearly 150,000 of them were children. And that number leaves out the “hidden homeless”: families doubling up in cramped apartments or bouncing between motels.“What causes homelessness, in the 1980s as now, is a lack of access to housing that poor and working-class people can afford,” says Brian Goldstone, journalist and author of the new book “There Is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America.”This week on The Intercept Briefing, Goldstone tells host Laura Flynn that the housing emergency is no accident; it's the product of deliberate political choices: “It's an engineered abandonment of not thousands, not hundreds of thousands, but millions of families.”Listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen. You can support our work at theintercept.com/join. In this powerful continuation from last week's episode, Kevin expands the analogy of life as a game and reveals why psychological warfare isn't just a tactic used by others - it is the structure of the game itself. In a world made of energy, narrative, repetition, and belief, the true battlefield is not physical but cognitive. And the antidote - the only antidote - is cognitive mastery.Kevin begins by reframing the physical world as the byproduct, the “spice,” of a deeper energetic and consciousness-based reality. While life appears to unfold in space and time, the real game is psychological, and the pieces on the board are narratives, information, perception, and belief. From the Age of Aquarius to the accelerated revelation of truth, Kevin explains how modern culture exposes its mechanisms everywhere - from Hollywood films to the news cycle to the design of the systems we live in.He revisits the illusory truth effect, a cognitive phenomenon proven by research showing that anything repeated often enough - true or false - becomes “truer” simply through familiarity. That repeated exposure forms neural pathways which harden into beliefs, even when later evidence contradicts them. And without cognitive mastery, the C-line of your model becomes an open gate, allowing the world to write your T-line for you.To show how deep this goes, Kevin walks through three pillars of the matrix: government, religion, and corporations. Using bold, historically grounded examples, he demonstrates how narratives become mass conditioning. From the Gulf of Tonkin to the JFK assassination, he illustrates how national stories shape perception long after their factual foundations have fallen away. He compares modern political and media structures to The Hunger Games, cautioning listeners not to confuse narrative with lived reality. From there, he shifts to religion - particularly the Abrahamic traditions - discussing how language, translation, withheld information, and ideological frameworks created an unseen but omnipresent narrative structure shaping Western consciousness. He introduces the “Redeemer Complex,” a narrative so ingrained in Western culture that it becomes the invisible water we swim in - impossible to see without stepping outside of it.Kevin then turns to corporations, explaining how marketing and advertising use psychology, repetition, and scarcity narratives to engineer desire, identity, and behavior. He breaks down the “Rule of Seven” and how companies leverage cognitive patterns to make their story feel like your own internal truth.Throughout, Kevin emphasizes that none of this is about vilifying systems or people. The matrix is neutral - even supportive. It exists as a compensatory mechanism for unconsciousness, a form of grace within the human game. The goal is not rebellion but awareness, not resistance but mastery.Your liberation lies in one thing: elevating your alpha, mastering your mind, and choosing your own narrative. No story outside of you is true - unless you accept it. Cognitive mastery is how you become in the world, but not of it.

Thanksgiving gets a full roast this episode as we dive into the annual paradox of expressing gratitude while elbowing strangers for the last can of cranberry sauce. We swap stories about chaotic grocery runs, family traditions that include creatively vandalizing greeting cards, and the unspoken rule that certain topics are banned at dinner unless you want to watch Uncle Larry spontaneously combust. We tackle the spiritual mystery of why Thanksgiving and Black Friday sit next to each other on the calendar like a wholesome nun sharing a bunk bed with a pickpocket. There’s also talk of buffet lines, questionable food preferences, holiday decorating schedules that start before the dishes are washed, and the alarming number of Pop-Tart flavors that should not exist. Basically, it’s a lighthearted stroll through the commercialization of gratitude season, where everyone insists they’re thankful while also fighting for parking spots like it’s the Hunger Games.

From there, they talk about Sunrise on the Reaping, why the Hunger Games world still works, and why Wicked For Good might actually top the first film for musical fans. The bulk of the episode is a big Stranger Things refresher. The guys walk through seasons 1 through 4, season by season, covering major story beats, character arcs, and the emotional moments that still hit, while calling out why Vecna, Max, Eddie, and the Starcourt Mall finale matter so much as we head into season 5. Frank: Make Some Noise on Dropout and why good improv feels like magic. 59:52 – Thanksgiving Wrap-Up & Five-Star Reminder Thanking the Geek Freaks community and reminding listeners to drop those five stars on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Key Takeaways The new GeekFreaksPodcast.com is live with a cleaner layout that makes it easier to share news and highlight shows across the network. Patreon holiday bundles are going out soon, so supporters need to confirm or add their mailing addresses to actually receive the swag. The new live action TMNT film has fans worried that The Last Ronin adaptation is getting shoved aside, and there is a strong preference for practical suits over full CGI turtles. George R. R. Martin continues to develop Westeros spinoffs, and there is a lot of interest in stories about Arya's travels, Dorne, the Manderlys, and Davos rather than revisiting the same old angles. Sunrise on the Reaping, the new Hunger Games prequel, looks like classic Hunger Games with the same sharp contrast between Capitol excess and district poverty that made the original films land. Wicked For Good nails its character work, deepens Glinda and Elphaba, and cleverly runs parallel to The Wizard of Oz, even if the middle stretch gets a bit tangled. The Stranger Things recap walks through all four seasons to give listeners a full refresher before Stranger Things season 5, hitting major character arcs, big deaths, and how the Upside Down threat has evolved. Season 4's Vecna twist, Max's near death, and Eddie's "Master of Puppets" distraction set up a darker, more apocalyptic final season, with Hawkins literally merging with the Upside Down. Stranger Things is praised for doing nostalgia the right way, feeling familiar without just copying older stories, similar to the best of Stephen King adaptations. Memorable Quotes "If this looks at all good, I know I'll be seeing it." – Frank on the new live action Ninja Turtles movie. "Just stop doing these retellings of the same story and continue to make us fresh content that just happens to be related to the things we already like." – Jonathan on constant reboots. "Northern mermaid folk with tridents on their banners? Come on, man, how are we not doing a show about them?" – Frank on the Manderlys. "That 'Running Up That Hill' scene basically broke the internet." – Jonathan on Stranger Things season 4. "It is not the same song, but it sounds familiar. That is what good nostalgia should feel like." – Frank on Stranger Things and Goonies-style stories. "I officially give you permission to yell at people who sing full volume in the theater." – Frank on musical movie etiquette.

Vince Gilligan's new show, “Pluribus,” opens with an unconventional apocalypse. A benevolent alien hive mind descends on Earth, commandeering the bodies of all but a handful of people who appear to be immune, including a curmudgeonly writer named Carol Sturka. Though the world that the “joined” are building seems ideal—no more crime, efficient resource distribution, an end to discrimination—it doesn't leave much room for Carol's messy humanity. Is it worth it? On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss “Pluribus” and other perfect societies imagined and enacted by artists and thinkers, from Thomas More's 1516 satire, “Utopia,” to the Shaker movement and beyond. They reflect on why these experiments have rarely held up to scrutiny or benefitted more than a select few, and why we keep coming back to them anyway. “I'm not the most optimistic person,” Fry says. “But if you're stuck in pessimistic, dystopic thinking, are you foreclosing on greater promise or greater potential of imagination?” Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Pluribus” (2025–)“Breaking Bad” (2008-13)“Better Call Saul” (2015-22)“The X-Files” (1993-2002)“The Giver,” by Lois Lowry“Utopia,” by Thomas More“Les Guérillères,” by Monique Wittig “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977)“The Testament of Ann Lee” (2025)“The Hunger Games,” by Suzanne Collins“Utopia for Realists,” by Rutger Bregman“Ragtime” (1996)New episodes drop every Thursday. Recorded live from the Cboe RMC floor in Munich, Cem Karsan sits down with volatility veteran David Dredge for a deep exploration of what truly drives risk. From the crash of 1987 to today's era of correlation, Dredge reframes volatility not as fear, but freedom. Through his F1 “brakes” analogy, he reveals why protection enables performance, and how convexity builds resilience in an uncertain world. Together, they trace the arc from structured-product flows to demographics, fiscal repression, and the coming global “Hunger Games” for savings. A masterclass in compounding through uncertainty.-----50 YEARS OF TREND FOLLOWING BOOK AND BEHIND-THE-SCENES VIDEO FOR ACCREDITED INVESTORS - CLICK HERE-----Follow Niels on Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube or via the TTU website.IT's TRUE ? – most CIO's read 50+ books each year – get your FREE copy of the Ultimate Guide to the Best Investment Books ever written here. And you can get a free copy of my latest book “Ten Reasons to Add Trend Following to Your Portfolio” here.Learn more about the Trend Barometer here.Send your questions to info@toptradersunplugged.comAnd please share this episode with a like-minded friend and leave an honest Rating & Review on iTunes or Spotify so more people can discover the podcast.Follow Cem on Twitter.Follow David on X.Episode TimeStamps: 00:01:29 – Cem introduces David Dredge live from Munich.00:03:28 – Dredge recalls arriving in Asia before the 1987 crash.00:05:06 – The F1 brakes analogy—why protection enables speed.00:07:45 – The “preserve and enhance” portfolio that defied 65/35.00:10:57 – Rethinking 60/40 and the illusion of diversification.00:14:33 – Cem on $500 trillion of correlated assets.00:17:22 – Why covered calls lose to convexity over time.00:19:14 – Misreading 2022: correlation, not equities, was the risk.00:21:20 – When diversification fails, only convexity endures.00:27:13 – Value investing in volatility—buying what others suppress.00:37:48 – Euro...

This week on @Betches, Aleen, Jordana, and Sami go full debrief on Kris Jenner's 70th, a Bond-themed, billionaire-level bash at the Bezos mansion, covering the A-list guests (hiiiiii Beyoncé) and the mystery of Prince Harry and Meghan appearing in party pics and then vanishing from the carousel. Does this hint at a Harry rebrand back toward the Royal family? Also, Sami delivers an Oscar-worthy dramatic reading from The Devil Wears Prada before the trio dives into Apple TV+'s Pluribus to debate whether it's an AI allegory, a takedown of forced-positivity culture, or something even darker.
