How do you identify stories with poison in them? They never say "TAKE THIS POISON." They always coat it in chocolate first...- "Make Me Famous" pitch reviews segment continues with "The Ghost Train". Maybe this is the episode wherein Nate finally likes a pitch.- Then the guys turn to stories that start out sweet but conceal poison in the end.- Harry Potter and The Hunger Games both start a story with something admirable (the underdog, self-sacrifice). That's the chocolate.- But once you like the chocolate, an author *can make you eat anything after that... even poison (self-pity, dissatisfaction, ungratefulness, victimhood mentality).- To demonstrate how a true underdog story works, Nate reframes the story of Joseph and the coat of many colors (not what that is).

Twilight and The Hunger Games set the bar high for young adult movie adaptations in late 2000s/early 2010s, and when Veronica Roth's Divergent series of books came onto the market, a deal was soon struck. The plan? A trilogy of movies, which soon expanded to four films. The challenge? Making them to hit an annual release slot, against a backdrop of overlapping schedules and keeping the audience interested. Things would not go to plan. Kristen Stewart meanwhile would take a day in the midst of the schedule for 2009's Adventureland to basically audition for the first Twilight film. But Greg Mottola's sort-of-autobiographical comedy drama would be release afterTwilight - and it was a production that faced the peril of making winter in a theme park look like summer. In Die Kristallkrone von Tessa Gratton erleben Jecki und Yord aus The Acolyte ein Abenteuer, welches vor der Serie spielt (logischerweise, bedenkt man ihr Schicksal). Doch die Story nimmt nie wirklich Fahrt auf und wirkt fast wie eine Parodie ihrer offiziellen Inspiration. Denn als The Hunger Games im Star Wars-Universum wird das Ganze im Klappentext angepriesen. Stattdessen: Gähnende Langeweile und am Ende kaum nachvollziehbare Intrigen. Genug Anlass, dass sich Ines und Tobias auf das Werk stürzen wie ein Lylek auf eine privilegierte Jugendgruppe auf einem entspannten Camping-Trip. Wir sprechen darüber, warum wir so enttäuscht waren. Wieso allein schon der Ablauf der Spiele unlogisch erscheint und warum wir uns nicht erklären können, wieso Tessa Gratton das Werk so in den Sand gesetzt hat. Es geht um die Frage, warum weder Handlung noch Charakterentwicklung stattfinden und die wenige, die wir bekommen, oft zu konsequenzlos bleibt. Und um die Überlegung, ob die besondere Eigenschaft einer Figur nicht das Gegenteil dessen bewirken könnte, was sie eigentlich intendiert. Before Call of Duty, before The Hunger Games, and long before kids with rifles were standard streaming fare, there was Red Dawn, a film where teenagers in Colorado picked up hunting rifles, hid in the woods, and waged war on the Soviet-Cuban invasion of suburban America. In 1984, World War III didn't start with a bang. It began with a history teacher getting machine-gunned through a classroom window. Wolverines, assemble. This Red Dawn 1984 Review is gunna be epic!This week on Born to Watch, the team revisits John Milius' unlikely cult classic, the first PG-13 movie ever released, and still one of the most bizarrely patriotic action flicks of its time. Whitey sets the scene: Cold War hysteria at its cinematic peak, where the solution to global conflict is apparently a football quarterback, a couple of dirt bikes, and a stash of grenades. Gow marvels at how dark and unexpectedly bleak the movie is upon rewatch. And special guest Chris, who watched this on loop in a Canadian compound in Saudi Arabia (seriously), adds depth, nostalgia, and just the right amount of North American sincerity.The pod kicks off with a bang (and a few technical apologies), diving straight into awkward romances, surprisingly competent teens, and Patrick Swayze's transition from ballet shoes to combat boots. There's plenty of love for the Outsiders alums in the cast, from Swayze to C. Thomas Howell to Charlie Sheen in his screen debut, "He looks like he's been acting for 20 years," Whitey insists. Jennifer Grey and Lea Thompson round out the '80s dream team, while Powers Boothe arrives halfway through the movie like a red-blooded Deus Ex America, delivering monologues about freedom, death, and being "super Catholic unless he needs to be super Anglican."And yes, the Wolverines' origin story is still insane. A bunch of high schoolers flee to the hills, build underground bunkers with trap doors, and become insurgents overnight. The pod breaks down every logical inconsistency and still comes away loving it: why did the Russian soldiers...take the picnic basket? Why did Darryl betray them? And how the hell did they learn to use claymores?As always, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly delivers the heat. The good? A refreshingly sincere slice of 80s teenage warfare, where death has weight and characters grow (or die trying). The bad? Avenge me! Avenge meee! Screams Harry Dean Stanton in a moment so melodramatic it becomes unintentionally iconic. And the ugly? Powers Boothe, nearly getting frisky with Lea Thompson, cut in post, thank God, but still creepy on rewatch.The conversation also swerves into great side quests. Gow takes us through Ordinary People, tying every cast member back to The Outsiders or Back to the Future in six degrees or less. Whitey flexes his film nerd muscles with a deep dive into director John Milius, writer of Apocalypse Now, Dirty Harry, and the infamous USS Indianapolis speech from Jaws. There's also the obligatory "One Degree of Kurt," tying the film back to Russell via Tombstone and Powers Boothe. Born to Watch bingo, complete.Set pieces get their due: the shock of the paratroopers in the opening scene, the forest ambush montages, the tragic final shootout between brothers. There's genuine reverence for how gritty and grim the film gets, even with its wild premise. "This movie's better than it has any right to be," is the consensus.Legacy-wise, Red Dawn didn't just launch a thousand VHS replays; it set the template for teen action cinema, and even inspired a less-than-stellar 2012 remake (which the boys pretend doesn't exist). Homeless sweeps have become the go-to, bipartisan performance of “doing something” about the U.S. housing crisis — a spectacle embraced by Democrats and Republicans, city halls, and the White House alike. But sweeps are not a solution. They're a way to make homelessness less visible while the crisis deepens.The roots stretch back decades. President Ronald Reagan's Tax Reform Act of 1986 pulled the federal government out of building and maintaining public housing, paving the way for a fragmented patchwork scheme of vouchers and tax credits. The result is the system we live with today — one that does little to stem the tide.Last year, more than 700,000 people were officially counted as homeless, the highest number ever recorded. Nearly 150,000 of them were children. Zoey Deutch and Jonah Hauer-King star. “Twinless” – Two men bond in a support group. Dylan O’Brien, Lauren Graham and Arkira Chantaratananond star. “Hamilton” – Celebrating its “ten-cennial,” the Broadway hit brings its performance capture version (which ran on Disney+) to the big screen. Updates about the performers make this more than a night out. “The Baltimorons” – Sobriety leads to a dental emergency which leads to a romance with the dentist. Jay Duplass directs; Michael Strassner co-writes and stars. “The Long Walk” —You thought the Hunger Games were bad, how about this: Teenage boys compete in a walking contest. If they don’t keep up, they’re shot. Based on a Stephen King story, it’s one of the year’s most harrowing. “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues” – Those Smell the Glove guys reunite after a 15-year hiatus for one last concert. Rob Reiner directs; the original actors return. “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale” – The Crawleys face scandal, financial ruin and social disgrace. To get out of it, they look to a younger generation. Expect all but Maggie Smith to be back. “The History of Sound” – Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor embark on a World War I project that brings them close to their country and each other. “Code 3” – One last shift for a paramedic who has to train his replacement. What could go wrong? Rainn Wilson, Lil Rel Howery star. “Him” – What a guy won’t do to be a football star. Here, one goes to a compound where anything can happen. Tyriq Withers, Marlon Wayans and Julia Fox star. “American Sweatshop – Yup, it’s the world of social media. An insider discovers just how dark the world is (like we didn’t know). “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” – Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie bond in a unique journey (which, of course, says nothing but suggests there’s more to this than two big stars). “The Summer Book” – A girl and her grandmother become closer in Finland. Emily Matthews and Glenn Close star. (Could this be the one that finally wins Close an Oscar?) “Xeno” – Ready for another E.T.? This one finds a teenager relating to the alien. Josh Cooke, Lulu Wilson star. “Waltzing with Brando” – When Marlon Brando wants an ecologically perfect retreat in Tahiti, he calls on a Los Angeles architect. Tia Carrere, Richard Dreyfuss and Jon Heder star. “Eleanor the Great” – Scarlett Johansson directs June Squibb in this drama about a 94-year-old who has plenty of stories to tell. “One Battle After Another” – Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this dark comedy about a group of revolutionaries reuniting to save one of their group’s daughter. Paul Thomas Anderson directs; Benicio Del Toro (who starred in a Wes Anderson film earlier this year) and Sean Penn co-star. October releases “The Smashing Machine” – Dwayne Johnson tries his hand at mixed-martial arts as UFC champion Mark Kerr. The makeup may be a stretch, but Benny Safdie directs, Emily Blunt disappears in an unlikely role. “Tron: Ares” – Jared Leto gets to run the race. Jeff Bridges is here, too, but this is about a new program (Ares) that’s about to embark on a dangerous mission. “Roofman” – A robber evades authorities by hanging out in a toy store. Channing Tatum plays the thief, Peter Dinklage and Kirsten Dunst swirl around him. “Anemone” – Daniel Day-Lewis comes out of retirement for this film directed by his son, Ronan. The plot? Good question, but it will have that DD-L prestige. “Kiss of the Spider Woman” – Jennifer Lopez stars in the Tony winner fans have been asking for. The big question: Were they looking for Lopez to star in it? Bill Conden directs. “If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You” – Rose Byrne gets the Oscar buzz as a woman trying to juggle multiple traumas, including a sick child and an absent husband. “Soul on Fire” – This is the story of a St. Louis native who survived burns which covered his body. Joel Courtney plays John O’Leary. William H. Macy and John Corbett co-star. “Good Fortune” – An angel meddles in the lives of a venture capitalist and a gig worker. Seth Rogen, Azizi Ansari and Keke Palmer star in this comedy written and directed by Ansari. Black Phone 2 – More trouble ensues when the phone rings. Sequel to a better-than-average horror film. “After the Hunt” – Julia Roberts plays a college professor who wonders what could happen when a student levels an accusation against a colleague. Ayo Edebiri co-stars. The Mastermind – A family man leads a double life in the 1970s. Josh O’Connor and Alana Haim star. “Pets on a Train” – Animated animals get caught up in a train heist. Hedda” – “Hedda Gabler” gets the big-screen treatment with Tessa Thompson in the title role. Blue Moon – The life of Lorenz Hart is told by Richard Linklater with Ethan Hawke as Hart. Andrew Scott plays Richard Rodgers. “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” -- Bruce Springsteen gets the Bob Dylan treatment with Jeremy Allen White in the title role. This, however, only covers the creation of the “Nebraska” album. “Regretting You” – Family issues emerge after the death of a husband and father. Based on Colleen Hoover’s best-seller, it stars Allison Williams and Mckenna Grace. “The Watchers” – M. Night Shayamalan’s daughter Ishana makes her directorial debut with this thriller about an artist who gets trapped in an Irish forest. “Anniversary” – A good cast (Diane Lane, Kyle Chandler, Zoey Deutch) in a thriller directed by Polish filmmaker Jan Komasa. “Bugonia” – Emma Stone continues her run with Yorgos Lanthimos. The film is a remake of a South Korean effort about two men kidnapping an executive, convinced she’s an alien bent on destroying Earth. “Nouvelle Vague” – Richard Linklater has another entry this year. This one’s a look at Jean-Luc Godard and actress Jean Seberg. Guillaume Marbeck and Zoey Deutch start. November releases When We Pray – Jamie Foxx directs the story of brothers who become pastors at divergent churches. Predator: Badlands – While “Alien: Earth” takes over TV screens, the “other” scary creature takes on a remote planet. The Running Man” – Glen Powell steps into Arnold Schwarzenegger’s shoes as a contestant in a game show which features killers all around the world. Amar first reached the national scene in 2018 when he wrote an Op Ed piece for the Washington Post where he wrote about his father, whom he compared to Apu from "The Simpsons."  Amar explains why he wrote the piece.  The story had more than 10 million engagements and resonated around the country and even the world. 6:18 ... Ever since Mayor Mike Johnston announced a $250 million budget shortfall and the possibility of layoffs, city workers have been nervously preparing for “The Purge” or “The Hunger Games.” We now know that 171 workers are losing their jobs this week and 800 more positions will be eliminated, but we don't know how that's going to affect city services. City Council member at-large Sarah Parady joins producer Paul Karolyi to discuss the biggest city layoffs in 15 years. Plus, a bunch of other hot-button issues facing council, from Salvation Army's cancelled contracts for homeless services to the mayor's big push for more AI.   Paul mentioned the New York Times reporting on Uber's sexual assault data.
