Clement Pang, cofounder of Lirvana Labs and Jeremy Au explored: 1. Google Engineer to $400M Exit Clement detailed his journey from a computer science graduate at Rice University in 2004 to starting at Google during its IPO phase and later GLMX in 2007 to build a financial trading platform as a founding engineer. In 2012, he co-founded Wayfront, an observability SaaS company that filled a gap in system monitoring. Early customers included Workday, Yammer, and Lyft, and the platform eventually scaled to serve companies like Reddit and DoorDash. Wayfront's acquisition by VMware in 2017 for $400 million provided Clement with invaluable lessons about scaling cross-functional teams and handling millions of data points per second. He emphasized minimizing dependency on external factors, a lesson learned from GLMX's reliance on interest rates, and aligning teams with a clear vision—a skill he honed while managing 2,000 engineers at VMware. 2. “Diamond Age” Education AI: Drawing inspiration from Neil Stephenson's The Diamond Age, Clement envisions AI as a tool to democratize education and approximate human tutors. In 2021, Clement co-founded Livano Labs with his sister to transform early childhood education using generative AI. Their app, Yeti Confetti Kids, launched in 2022, targets children aged 3 to 9, teaching math, English, and social-emotional skills. AI designs personalized learning experiences instead of relying on pre-set algorithms. Feedback loops enabled the AI to improve its outputs by analyzing real-world usage data. He emphasized curriculum alignment for classroom settings, where AI must adhere to structured learning goals. 3. Gen Z Future: Clement reflected on how tools like ChatGPT are changing interpersonal communication, particularly for Gen Z. He drew parallels to the introduction of calculators in education, noting how technological tools shift norms and practices. He discussed AI's role as a sounding board for personal and professional problem-solving, encouraging users to engage critically with its outputs while leveraging its strengths. They also discussed lessons from Clement's experiences managing cross-functional teams during Wayfront's rapid growth, how decreasing costs are enabling scalable applications like Yeti Confetti Kids, and the role of AI in enhancing collaboration and decision-making. === Clement Pang is a serial entrepreneur (400MM in exits) and current co-founder and co-CEO of Lirvana Labs, a startup that created an AI Learning Companion to teach children the critical literacy and reasoning skills that change lives and destinies. With over 17 years of experience in software engineering, architecture, and leadership, Clement is passionate about building purposeful products that leverage the power of AI and data to solve real-world problems and improve human well-being. === Watch, listen or read the full insight at www.bravesea.com/blog/ google-engineer-to-400M-exit Nonton, dengar atau baca wawasan lengkapnya di www.bravesea.com/blog/ google-engineer-to-400M-exit 观看、收听或阅读全文,请访问 www.bravesea.com/blog/ google-engineer-to-400M-exit Xem, nghe hoặc đọc toàn bộ thông tin chi tiết tại www.bravesea.com/blog/ google-engineer-to-400M-exit Get transcripts, startup resources & community discussions at www.bravesea.com WhatsApp: https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029VakR55X6BIElUEvkN02e TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jeremyau Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jeremyauz Twitter: https://twitter.com/jeremyau LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/bravesea Spotify English: https://open.spotify.com/show/4TnqkaWpTT181lMA8xNu0T Bahasa Indonesia: https://open.spotify.com/show/2Vs8t6qPo0eFb4o6zOmiVZ Chinese: https://open.spotify.com/show/20AGbzHhzFDWyRTbHTVDJR Vietnamese: https://open.spotify.com/show/0yqd3Jj0I19NhN0h8lWrK1 YouTube English: https://www.youtube.com/@JeremyAu?sub_confirmation=1

PODCAST: Hexapodia LVIII: Mourning the Death of Vernor Vinge

"Hexapodia" Is the Key Insight: by Noah Smith & Brad DeLong

Play Episode Listen Later May 8, 2024 71:33

Noah Smith & Brad DeLong Record the Podcast We, at Least, Would Like to Listen to!; Aspirationally Bi-Weekly (Meaning Every Other Week); Aspirationally an hour... Key Insights:* Vernor Vinge was one of the GOAT scifi authors—and he is also one of the most underrated…* That a squishy social-democratic leftie like Brad DeLong can derive so much insight and pleasure from the work of a hard-right libertarian like Vernor Vinge—for whom the New Deal Order is very close to being the Big Bad, and who sees FDR as a cousin of Sauron—creates great hope that there is a deeper layer of thought to which we all can contribute. The fact that Brad DeLong and Vernor Vinge get excited in similar ways is a universal force around which we can unite, and add to them H.G. Wells and Jules Verne…* The five things written by Vernor Vinge that Brad and Noah find most interesting are: * “The Coming Technological Singularity: How to Survive in the Post-Human Era”,* A Fire Upon the Deep,* A Deepness in the Sky, * “True Names”, & * Rainbows End…* We do not buy the Supermind Singularity: The world is not a game of chess in which the entity that can think 40 moves ahead will always easily trounce the entity that can only think 10 moves ahead, for time and chance happeneth to us all…* We do not buy the Supermind Singularity: Almost all human intelligence is not in individual brains, but is in the network. We are very smart as an anthology intelligence. Whatever true A.I.s we create will be much smarter when they are tied into the network as useful and cooperative parts of it—rather than sinister gods out on their own plotting plots…* We do not buy the Supermind Singularity: mind and technology amplification is as likely to be logistic as exponential or super-exponential…* The ultimate innovation in a society of abundance is the ability to control human personality and desire—and now we are back to the Buddha, and to Zeno, Kleanthes, Khrisippus, and Marcus Aurelius…* With the unfortunate asterisk that mind-hacking via messages and chemicals mean that such an ultimate innovation can be used for evil as well as good…* Addiction effects from gambling are not, in fact, a good analogy for destructive effects of social media as a malevolent attention-hacker…* Cyberspace is not what William Gibson and Neil Stephenson predicted. But it rhymed. And mechanized warfare was not what H.G. Wells predicted. But it rhymed. A lot of the stuff about AI that we see in science fiction will rhyme with whatever things are going to happen…* The Blight of A Fire Upon the Deep is a not-unreasonable metaphor for social media as propaganda intensifier…* We want the future of the Whole Earth Catalog and the early Wired, not of crypto grifts and ad-supported social media platforms…* Vernor Vinge's ideas will be remembered—if only as important pieces of a historical discussion about why the Superintelligence Singularity road was not (or was) taken—as long as the Thrones of the Valar endure…* Noah Smith continues to spend too much time picking fights on Twitter…* &, as always, Hexapodia…References:* DeLong, J. I can remember it like it was yesterday. October, 1976, Sunday night, 7pm.I was already dressed for bed and I settled down in front of the TV.“When you wish upon a star” played from the speakers and the opening credits of “The Wonderful World of Disney” played across the screen. This was a normal Sunday night for me and it is the reason I am a huge Kurt Russell fan to this day.But this night of television was going to be very different. This night was going to change me forever. The music swelled and the screen was filled with stage curtains in blue, lights like waves splashed over the opening credits as the title card “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” played across the screen. That movie started my love of Science Fiction. The next day I checked out the Jules Verne book from the library and when I finished that, I went back for more. The Journey to the Center of the Earth, From the Earth to the Moon, Mysterious Island, and Around the World in Eighty Days just to name a few.Since then, Science Fiction has been my go-to when I am reading, watching TV or films, and gaming. The Science Fiction Genre has been described as the “Literature of Ideas” and it's one of the most versatile and expansive genres in existence. From the fantasy landscapes of J.R,R, Tolkien, to the time travelling HG Wells, to the Ringworlds of Larry Niven and the depths of the human mind from Neil Stephenson, Sci-Fi can do it all.On this episode Christina, Mike and I are going to talk about the Sci-Fi genre and how to bring it to life in your roleplaying games.Christina, do you remember your first exposure to Sci-Fi?

Sahil Patel, CEO of Spiralyze, shares his journey to becoming CEO and introduces Spiralyze, a conversion rate optimization company. Spiralyze offers a unique tech-enabled service that combines an agency component with a SaaS product. They scrape data from 34,000 websites that run A/B tests to identify proven winners, which are tests that have been validated by multiple companies. Spiralyze uses this data to design, build, and run tests for their clients, offering performance-based pricing where clients only pay if they achieve a significant lift in conversions. Sahil also addresses concerns about statistical significance and the challenges of running tests with limited traffic in the B2B SaaS space. In this conversation, Sahil Patel discusses the differences in B2B marketing and the challenges of achieving statistical significance in experiments. He emphasizes the importance of taking big swing tests and killing losing and neutral tests early. Sahil also shares insights on the perishability of learnings and the pragmatic approach to testing in the B2B SaaS world. Additionally, he provides advice on managing mental health as a CEO and finding fulfillment in work. The conversation concludes with a book recommendation: Snow Crash by Neil Stephenson.Key TakeawaysSpiralyze is a conversion rate optimization company that combines an agency component with a SaaS product. They scrape data from 34,000 websites to identify proven winners, tests that have been validated by multiple companies.Spiralyze offers performance-based pricing, where clients only pay if they achieve a significant lift in conversions.Addressing statistical significance and limited traffic in the B2B SaaS space can be challenging but can be overcome with data-driven approaches. B2B marketing has meaningful differences compared to other types of marketing, such as lower traffic and different desired actions.Taking big swing tests, rather than meek tests, can lead to quicker statistical significance and more impactful results. In the B2B SaaS world, it is important to kill losing and neutral tests early to optimize resources and time.Learnings from experiments are highly perishable and specific to the test conducted, making them less valuable in the long term.Managing mental health as a CEO requires having a peer group, confidants, and seeking therapy when needed.Personalization and customization are often overrated, and companies should focus on showing relevance and solving customer problems.Finding fulfillment in work involves aligning your strengths with the rewards and characteristics of the environment. The book Snow Crash by Neil Stephenson is recommended for its engaging story and futuristic concepts.Show LinksVisit SpiralyzeConnect with Sahil Patel on LinkedIn and check his BioConnect with David Khim on LinkedIn and TwitterConnect with Omniscient Digital on LinkedIn or TwitterPast guests on The Long Game podcast include: Morgan Brown (Shopify), Ryan Law (Animalz), Dan Shure (Evolving SEO), Kaleigh Moore (freelancer), Eric Siu (Clickflow), Peep Laja (CXL), Chelsea Castle (Chili Piper), Tracey Wallace (Klaviyo), Tim Soulo (Ahrefs), Ryan McReady (Reforge), and many more. Some interviews you might enjoy and learn from:Actionable Tips and Secrets to SEO Strategy with Dan Shure (Evolving SEO)Building Competitive Marketing Content with Sam Chapman (Aprimo)How to Build the Right Data Workflow with Blake Burch (Shipyard)Data-Driven Thought Leadership with Alicia Johnston (Sprout Social)Purpose-Driven Leadership & Building a Content Team with Ty Magnin (UiPath)Also, check out our Kitchen Side series where we take you behind the scenes to see how the sausage is made at our agency:Blue Ocean vs Red Ocean SEOShould You Hire Writers or Subject Matter Experts? How Do Growth and Content Overlap?Connect with Omniscient Digital on social:Twitter: @beomniscientLinkedin: Be OmniscientListen to more episodes of The Long Game podcast here: https://beomniscient.com/podcast/

Does this sound straight out of a science-fiction novel? That's because it is.In "Termination Shock", Neil Stephenson described a near-future earth where climate change has significantly altered human society and follows the attempts of a businessman using solar geoengineering to cool the planet.Luke Iseman, a hardware entrepreneur and solarpunk, read the book and dug into Stephenson's research on solar geoengineering. To his amazement, he found that it was possible and nobody is trying it out!Luke founded make sunsets to experiment with balloons sending sulfur dioxide particles that reflect sunlight into the stratosphere, effectively replicating the process that volcanoes have done for millions of years to cool the planet. In this episode, we're joined by regulatory hacker Eli Dourado to better understand this powerful technology that could help humanity achieve climate mastery.Major innovations often start with hobbyists, tinkerers, and true believers, as Clayton Christenson's "The Innovator's Dilemma" found out. They are not taken seriously by the mainstream for a long time. While starting on a small scale, Luke's experiments have nevertheless engendered controversy in the scientific community. We talk about why science is disconnected from promoting real-world innovation by focusing too much on analysis instead of action and real-world experimentation. The episode is a fascinating journey that helps us better understand the challenges faced by entrepreneurs on the frontiers of science and technology. They are not hailed while they are doing the work, they instead face skepticism often from powerful groups - partly for good reasons as new technology never comes in a mature form, but also partly because incumbents fear for their status. As a result, we learn that entrepreneurs need to build a community of true believers around them on a mission against a hostile mainstream culture. If you are an entrepreneur and seek a community of techno-optimists, join us for upcoming conferences in Prospera, the startup city:Supercharging Health 2023 - A Próspera Builders' Summit, April 21-23 on Roatan.Decentralizing Finance 2023 - A Próspera Builders' Summit, May 5-7 on Roatan.

After the ApocalypseA Pandemic Survival StorySeason two, Episode three “The Hungry River”Janet glared through the sleet, up the hill, searching for the Humvees that she expected to appear over the crest at any moment.   “Persistent deadbeats…” She swore under her breath as the chain saw chattered in her hands. She knew if she could slow them down, even for a minute, it might give the bus enough time to escape....Outro S2 E3https://shows.acast.com/after-the-apocalypse Hello and welcome back survivors. Here we are, episode 3 of season two and it feels like we're hitting our stride. This was a fun episode to construct. I love the visual of the river devouring the bridge.  Just a great picture in my mind's eye. The other thing that happened here, not to give you too much of the sausage-making, was a roller coaster ride. It's a series of tension builds and releases, where we are just letting you off the hook and we slap you again with a new shock wave.  I would be interested in your feedback on how all that worked for you. We are moving right along in season 2 and keeping up our production schedule. Which is great because I've been super-busy in my real job.  Last weekend was the Wasteland Weekend.  We'll have to ask Mike Darling how it all turned out this year with the actual apocalypse still going on in the US. It sounded like they had a full schedule out there in the desert and that attendance was going to be good. As a reminder that is a desert festival every year with an apocalypse theme. Which sounds scary and dangerous – but probably is just a lot of fun.  Imagine you're out for a hike in the desert and you come across a gang of folks dressed like Mad Max characters? Would you be scared? You probably shouldn't be. In my experience the folks that do this type of character playing aren't the dangerous types, they're the arty types. I‘ll tell you a story. A few years back I had to drive into Boston to pick up my daughter who was attending Anime Boston, one of the big regional conventions. I pull into the Marriott and the place is full of kids in bizarre costumes. Monsters, aliens, etc. you get it. And I asked the bellman who was standing there if this was a hard week for the hotel with all these crazy, costumed kids hanging about? And, he said, “No, they're just nice kids. No trouble at all. Last week we had the police convention, and they tore the place up.” That was a lesson for me. You can't judge a book by it's cover so to speak. Speaking of books and covers, I'm still stalled out on the season one manuscript. I've been super busy. But, I'll keep working on it. As long as I'm still creating new content the offering just keeps getting stronger. Sampled a couple new Apocalypse type media pieces this last week that I'll share. I watched Alita Battle Angel 2019 American cyberpunk action film based on Japanese manga artist Yukito Kishiro's 1990s series Battle Angel Alita. It is loosely a cyber-punk themed future Earth after some apocalyptic war with Mars.   But this only has a pasing cyber-punk content, it's more of an anime themed film. I have always loved the cyber-punk genre of science fiction. Neil Stephenson's Snow Crash was a revelation in 1992. It brought cool to tech. I wasn't that much of a comic book or anime kid.  Anyhow, what keeps this film from being the same as every other Anime-marshal-arts film is it's investment level and pedigree. It was produced by James Cameron, while he was making Avatar and you can see the Avatar influence. Especially that mildly creepy performance captured animation.  It was directed by Robert Rodriguez, yes that Robert Rodriguez of El Mariachi Fame and, by the way you should read his book Rebel without a crew if you haven't, it's a fantastic glimpse into the making of a director.  I bet Makeshift sleeps with a copy under his pillow. Alita is a decent story and a watchable movie. It's got some good acting and tries hard.  Worth a watch if you're decompressing after a long day in the salt mines. I also watched the original Ip Man movie. This is a Chinese martial arts movie dubbed in English with the subtitles. But, it's a Chinese marshal arts movie, so do you really need subtitles? Do you really need dialogue? It is just one big marshal art movie trope, but somehow it works. It think it's because the main character, played by Donnie Yen, is just so likable. So again, worth a watch if you've got time on your hands and is currently on Netflix. The protagonist, Ip Man, is based very loosely on the story of the kung fu master who trained Bruce Lee.  And if you don't know who Bruce Lee is then there is no hope for you. I am still working my way through Heinlein's Stranger in a strange land. I'll have more thoughts on it when I get to the end. It gets a bit slow in the middle. Next, our friend Dave, one of the editors here at Apocalypse HQ, tipped us off to an apocalypse podcast story. It is on a podcast named StarShipSofa – all one word and the story he tipped me to is episode 603. It is a story by Elad Haber titled “Number One Hit” read by Jonathan Danz. I listened to it on my long bike ride last weekend and it was outstanding. So my survivor friends, I hope you're enjoying Season two.  We are up over 25,000 downloads. As always you can leap over and join us at the Facebook group by searching for ‘oldmanapocalypse'. I've been informed by one of you that you can just search for “After the Apocalypse” in FaceBook and that will probably get you there. The URL is: https://www.facebook.com/groups/oldmanapocalypseYou can find these notes on ACast with all the links imbedded and you can help keep the show going on Patreon. https://www.patreon.com/AftertheApocalypseAnd Do me a favor – Keep Surviving! Cambridge Analytica is important because it’s an example of how vulnerable our data is, how powerful it can be for whoever owns it, and how insignificant the punishment currently is for not taking correct precautions. 2. Data rights are crucial to protecting our ability to make decisions. If you don’t believe us, consider the Stanford experiment which generated an algorithim that can detect whether you’re gay or straight with 91% accuracy. It might be hard to believe data is persuading us to make decisions, but what about scenarios where it’s making the decision for us? 3. If you believe protecting your data is important start here. Upgrade was a pleasant surprise and although the trailer shows a bit of levity in the film (Grey joking around with Stem) the movie has a very serious and heavy tone. If you're into lean science fiction that isn't too 'out there' vis-à-vis planet hopping or alien invasion stuff, you'll dig it. It fees like a Neil Stephenson or William Gibson novel come to life (read: cyberpunk) and I love that sub-genre of sci-fi - especially when you keep the narrative tight and simple. I've been reading Neil Stephenson's Anathema , and have been really enjoying it, but it's certainly very erudite and tough going. Conan is a well worthwhile break from the stresses of life. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I have been!Morgan
