With the White House and Congress up for grabs this election, anticipation in the healthcare industry is high. Shifts in healthcare policy will influence how care is paid for and delivered, which will of course influence the flow of investment dollars in both public and private markets.During the first episode of a four-part series on election implications, beltway insider Julie Barnes laid out potential scenarios for the direction healthcare policy might take depending on election outcomes. With that background, Part 2 of the series zooms in on healthcare investing. For more than 20 years – and now six presidential election cycles – Richard Close has covered the healthcare space as a Wall Street analyst. He was one of the first analysts covering healthcare technology and as Managing Director, Digital and Tech-Enabled Health Equity Research at Canaccord Genuity, he focuses on introducing the investment community to disruptive and innovative companies that are leading the digital transformation in healthcare. In this episode of Healthcare is Hard, Richard talked to Keith Figlioli about the election and how it could impact investments in the healthcare sector. A few of the topics they discussed include:Predictions on priorities. Healthcare has not been a major focus this election cycle and Richard doesn't believe either candidate has shared many specifics about their plans for health policy. But he discussed general expectations like an increase in Medicare drug price negotiations under a Harris Administration, or giving states more control of Medicaid under a Trump Administration. Regardless of who takes the White House, he sees an increasing focus on addressing employer health costs, driven by forecasts for an 8% increase next year – the highest jump in more than a decade.Contrasts in public vs. private markets. Richard says healthcare investors in public markets tend to “paint with a broad brush” and are focused on the short-term. Because of this, he says struggles at large-cap managed care companies in recent years have influenced overall investor sentiment. Once these companies get beyond current challenges and start hitting their numbers, he believes it will open the market and drive improved valuation for smaller and mid-cap companies. On the other hand, Richard says investors in private markets look more deeply into sub-sectors and are placing bets for the long run. Optimism for health tech. With healthcare accounting for 20% of the economy and continuing to grow, Richard sees technology as a primary lever to help bend the cost curve. He's optimistic about the future opportunity for investors in both public and private markets, and sees an opportunity for the IPO window to potentially open up after the election. He says there are a handful of companies that are profitable and have been growing revenue that may be ready to test the IPO market in 2025.To hear Richard and Keith discuss these topics and more, listen to this episode of Healthcare is Hard: A Podcast for Insiders.

Also, some companies might be covered more than once and there are also 2 article links below that time didn't allow me to review them here. ------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Renewable Energy Stock Picks I'm beginning with this article which is from the famous Zacks research team. It's titled 4 Stocks to Watch in the Path to Decarbonize the Future and is by Rimmi Singhi and found at sg.news.yahoo.com. Here are brief quotes by the author on each stock. “1. Clearway (CWEN) along with its subsidiaries owns and operates a diverse portfolio of contracted renewable and conventional generation, along with thermal infrastructure assets in the United States. Furthermore, Clearway's asset portfolio includes more than 9,000 megawatts (MW) of wind, solar, thermal, and natural-gas-fired power generation facilities as well as distract energy systems… The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Clearway's 2023 sales and earnings implies year-over-year growth of 15% and 149%, respectively… It boasts a long-term earnings growth rate of 10%. Clearway currently sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy). 2. NextEra (NEE) is a leading provider of wind and solar energy in the United States. It has a wide range of expertise, including the design, manufacture, installation, development, and servicing of wind energy and hybrid projects worldwide. With over 157 GW of wind turbines installed in 88 countries, Vestas is a major player in the industry… The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Vestas' 2023 and 2024 earnings implies year-over-year growth of 126% and 189%, respectively. The same for 2023 and 2024 revenues indicates a year-over-year uptick of 7% and 25%, respectively. Vestas currently carries a Zacks Rank #3.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 2) Renewable Energy Stock Picks This second article is again by the prodigious research output group, InvestorPlace. It's titled 3 Renewable Energy Stocks to Capitalize on the Sustainability Surge. It's by Rick Orford and found on investorplace.com. Now some of what Mr. Orford says about his stock picks. “1. First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR) The continued growth in solar power as an alternative energy source has made companies like First Solar an important part of the government's plan to transition to a green economy. The company is one of the top producers of photovoltaic cells (PV) used in building CdTe solar modules that transform sunlight into electricity, making it an invaluable component of the solar power production chain. The growing demand for solar energy has led to First Solar's acquisition of an Ohio facility that serves as its distribution center, enabling it to scale manufacturing… Looking forward, First Solar expects net income per diluted share to end between $13.00 and $14.00 — almost doubling 2023 results — and net sales to be around $4.4 billion and $4.6 billion for 2024. With the government's strong push to go green, First Solar has tremendous potential, making it one of the best choices for renewable energy stocks to buy. 2. Broadwind (NASDAQ:BWEN) specializes in wind energy equipment, clean energy structures and clean technology used by different sectors. The company agreed with MarketAxess Holdings (NASDAQ:MKTX) to ‘sell earned Advanced Manufacturing Production Credits' which will help significantly improve its liquidity profile. Broadwind's latest results showcased impressive growth in FY'23. Revenue reached $203.5 million, 15% higher than the previous year's reported revenue of $176.7 million… Despite a slight decrease in orders and backlog from last year, Broadwind is still optimistic about future prospects, especially with expectations of accelerating wind development in the latter half of 2024. 3. Beam Global (NASDAQ:BEEM) is a clean technology innovator that designs advanced solutions for energy storage, electric vehicle (EV) charging and energy infrastructures. Its patented infrastructure product EV ARC (Electric Vehicle Autonomous Renewable Charger) uses integrated battery storage and solar power that provides a power source for electric vehicle charging stations. The company also offers street furniture and street lighting products globally… The company finished FY'23 with a record revenue of $67.4 million, a 206% growth compared to last year's $23 million. Earnings for the year improved to a net loss of $1.30, an increase of 34.6% compared to the previous year's loss of $1.99. In addition, the company reported positive full-year gross profit and remained debt-free with an unused $100 million line of credit. Its significant backlog and contracts mean the company should have ample cash flow to fund its future operations.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 3) Renewable Energy Stock Picks This third article is titled SunPower Stock Has 87% Upside, According to 1 Wall Street Analyst. It's by Rich Smith and found on fool.com. Here are some of his comments. “Is SunPower (SPWR) stock a buy in 2024? Quoted on The Fly Monday, Richardson explained he cut SunPower's price target because green energy stocks have been underperforming this year and inventories are still bloated. But the analyst remains optimistic that ‘inventory channel clearings are nearly complete' and so the bottom is not far off. Combined with rising electricity rates, that's going to create more demand for cheap solar power, and create the potential for SunPower's sales to turn around. Is he right? As the saying goes, it's hard to make predictions -- especially about the future. Still, if the ‘bottom' has truly already arrived for solar power stocks, then it's arrived remarkably quickly. In related cyclical industries such as semiconductors for example, oversupply cycles ordinarily take six to 18 months to reverse. But SunPower's sales have only been falling for a couple of quarters. According to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence, sales were still on an upswing as recently as the second quarter of 2023! While it's possible SunPower's going to get away with just a six-month downturn, therefore, I wouldn't bet on it. And I wouldn't bet on a company valued at $380 million, and burning more than half that amount ($201 million) in cash every year, doubling over the next 12 months either. More than likely, SunPower stock still has at least a few more rough quarters ahead of it.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- 4) Renewable Energy Stock Picks The last article is titled 3 Renewable Energy Stocks That Will Make Other Investors Green With Envy. It's by Rick Orford, and found on investorplace.com. Here are some comments by Mr. Orford. “For this analysis, I've started with a screen of the top 30 Renewable Energy Companies based on the Market Cap. Then, I filtered the list for the following criteria: Year-on-year quarterly net income growth of over 30%, Analyst rating of 4 and above (moderate to strong buy) and An upside potential of over 50% based on high target prices. This list of renewable energy stocks to buy is sorted in descending order based on upside potential. 1. First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR) drives the global transition to renewable energy by harnessing the sun's power. The company manufactures thin-film PV solar modules, which offer a lower-carbon alternative to conventional crystalline silicon PV modules. First Solar's business operations include manufacturing cadmium telluride solar modules, project development activities, operations and maintenance services. The company has a presence in France, Japan, Chile and, of course, the United States… First Solar's Q4FY'23 financial report is a relief for many investors. Its revenue Increased to $1.16 billion from $1 billion YOY. EPS also recovered considerably from a 7-cent loss to a $3.27 profit per share. Its metrics, including its YOY net income growth of 84.65%, make it easy to understand why analysts rate the stock a strong buy, with a high target of $269 — over 52.6% upside potential from its current levels. 2. Fluence Energy (NASDAQ:FLNC) is a driving force in integrating renewable energy into power grids. It delivers highly modernized energy storage solutions worldwide. The company offers various energy storage products like Gridstack Pro, Gridstack, Sunstack, Edgestack and Ultrastack. It caters to applications such as large-scale front-of-the-meter, DC-coupled solar + storage, commercial and industrial use cases, and more… Fluence Energy's Q1'24 financials are pretty decent despite minor setbacks in metrics. Its revenues increased from $363.95 million to $310.46 million YOY. Its gross profit increased from $12 million to $36.39 million. However, Fluence Energy's net quarterly income loss was $25.55 million, an improvement from $37.19 million last year. Analysts rate FLNC stock a strong buy, targeting a high price of $37, which translates to 107% upside potential from its current levels. 3. Brookfield Renewable Partners (NYSE:BEP) is a prominent player in the renewable energy sector and owns various assets worldwide. The company's portfolio includes hydroelectric, wind, solar and energy storage facilities, with an operating capacity of approximately 33,000 megawatts. Moreover, Brookfield Renewable Partners has a significant development pipeline and invests in sustainable solutions such as renewable natural gas, carbon capture and storage, recycling and nuclear services… Brookfield Renewable Partners reported pretty decent Q4'23 financial results with its all-positive YOY performance. Its revenue slightly increased to $1.32 billion from $1.20 billion. On top of that, the company's net income significantly increased to $264 million from $60 million, placing its EPS in a recovering trajectory of $0.01 from the -$0.16 loss reported in FY'22. Analysts rate Brookfield Renewable Partners stock a strong buy with a high target of $52, reflecting over 152% upside potential.” End quotes. ------------------------------------------------------------- One Honorable Mention Title: 3 Renewable Energy Stocks to Sell in May Before They Crash & Burn on investorplace.com. Coinbase shares are down over 70% on the year, a state of affairs compounded by a rough Q1, but one leading Wall Street analyst believes Coinbase may be undervalued. In this episode of The Scoop, Mark Palmer — managing director and fintech analyst at global financial services firm BTIG — shares why his firm is bullish on a narrative shift on Wall Street regarding Coinbase stock in the coming months. As Palmer contended during the show: “Coinbase has developed itself over the last ten years, largely via acquisition… and over time, this is going to become much less of a retail trading story and much more about a sort of crypto supermarket that's going to have an awful lot of different revenue drivers.” Palmer points to the 2021 acquisition of Bison Trails as an example of Coinbase's horizontal expansion. As Coinbase CPO Surojit Chatterjee and Bison Trails founder Joe Lallouz argued during an episode of The Scoop, the deal enhanced Coinbase's crypto infrastructure services products, including institutional staking support. Although Coinbase offers a wide range of crypto services, Palmer believes many Wall Street analysts tend to view Coinbase first and foremost through the lens of an exchange: “There are a lot of folks who are covering some of the crypto exchanges and platforms that really aren't as focused on crypto — maybe they're focused on exchanges at large — and some of those distinctions and nuances, which are crucially important, get missed.” Editor's Note: While Coinbase is a sponsor of The Scoop podcast, this episode is not an endorsement of Coinbase stock or products, nor was it produced with involvement from Coinbase. Together, Roche and Biogen paid over $5.5 billion for gene therapy companies Spark and Nightstar. What does this mean for the emerging technology? Spark, of course, received FDA approval for Luxturna as a treatment for inherited retinal disease. But the drug isn’t Roche’s primary focus. Meanwhile, Nightstar’s clinical-stage products could give Biogen a second shot at a gene therapy portfolio after the company severed ties with AGTC in December. Could Biogen make a move to bulk up its ophthalmology offerings?
Should dividends be outlawed? Take for example the perverse scenario in General Electric in twenty seventeen. Management cut the dividend by half. The stock dropped by eleven percent that day. Did this shock shareholders? I doubt it. The company had been bleeding cash. The firm continued to pay dividends regardless. The share price had already dropped from thirty to twenty dollars. Bad management lacked the courage to do the right thing. The takeaway is that there is a strong rational for well managed firms to not pay coffer draining dividends. And many stocks today do not pay dividends. This fact pokes a stick in the machinery of dividend yield investors. Beating the Dow is a classic read by Wall Street practitioner Michael O’Higgins. Another is Stocks for the Long Run by Jeremey Seigel, a finance professor at Wharton. Both books show that investors can get a few percentage points in return over the indexes buying stocks that pay lots of dividends relative to the stock price. But watch out! Recent evidence by financial economists indicates that the dividend yield premium has been arbitraged out of the market. The take way is that this strategy may well be a waste of time today because of market efficiency. Yale School of Management finance professor by day and Nobel Laureate by night Bob Shiller pointed out that common stock was a hard sell to bond investors back in sixteen hundred. So, the Dutch East India Company started paying an eighteen percent regular dividend to draw capital away from bonds. Common stock unlike interest bearing bonds offers no guarantee of payment. University of Toronto finance professor Myron Gordon developed an equation of how dividends impact common stock value. This simple equation I am looking at now is enormously useful for developing a sound economic intuition regarding how dividends impact the value of the stocks you invest in. In the simplest scenario dividend growth is constant. The discount rate is greater than the dividend growth rate. The equation teaches us that the value of common stock today is simply the upcoming dividend divided by the discount rate less the dividend growth rate. Most MBA students grasp this easily. But both professor Crack and I have noticed that they have difficulty understanding that the theoretical stock price grows at the dividend growth rate. And that the required stock return is a combination of both the capital gains rate and the dividend yield. Also, something subtler is that the dividend yield has to be constant if dividends and the stock grow at a constant rate. Strange values pop out of the model when the difference between the discount and dividend growth rate is very small. Another useful aspect of the Gordon-Shapiro model is that it can be rearranged to calculate the dividend growth rate. This is helpful when you know stock prices and dividend amounts as well as the discount rate. Finally, the model can be expanded for multiple dividend growth rates. What is the takeaway from all of this? The Gordon-Shapiro model is commonly used to generate expected future prices of stocks. If you understand the model and the intuition you can decide for yourself if you agree with Wall Street Analyst stock forecasts. Furthermore, and way beyond into option theory. Here is one subtle point. When a company pays a dividend, the earnings drop a little. Call prices drop a little too. I will explain in detail why in a podcast episode down the road when we talk about option theory. If you want to dig into actionable material right now, go over to Rhodes Society dot org and get on our e-mailing list. Then go to Amazon to pick up Beating the Dow and Stocks for the Long Run. Two killer reads, I assure you! Book List O’Higgins, Michael. Beating the Dow Siegel, Jeremy. Stocks for the Long Run.
Mobile Home Park Investors with Jefferson Lilly & Brad Johnson
This episode is Part three of a three-part series. On this week’s show, Ryan continues his discussion on how the two publically traded companies, ELS and SUI, are doing in the market, where they’re headed long- and short-term, and what kind of events in the world need to happen for the industry to disappear. Key Takeaways: [1:25] Who wants to be in just ‘average’ real estate? [2:05] How do the two management teams, ELS and SUI, treat each other? [5:50] These teams have very little control over how strong the NOI growth is and what happens with cap rate. [8:25] Where does Ryan see ELS and SUI going both long term and short term? [10:40] Jefferson loves Equity Lifestyle and has been very happy with the return over the last few years. [11:55] Most people don’t realize it but manufactured homes comprise about 7% of the total housing stock in the U.S. [16:45] Unfortunately it’s hard to see bubbles until they’ve viciously popped. They’re difficult to predict. However, there are some current indicators that suggest we’re not in a bubble just yet. [18:55] What’s Ryan’s opinion of mobile home park investors? He thinks they’re extremely smart! [21:25] What kinds of books does Ryan recommend to people who want to learn more about real estate? Ryan Burke is a Wall Street Analyst for Green Street Advisors. This episode is Part two of a three-part series. On the show, Ryan discusses why there isn’t new park development in the mobile home park industry, what kind of returns you can expect from a mobile home park, and how they’re faring with publicly traded companies like ELS and SUI. Key Takeaways: [1:25] What kinds of things or factors inhibit the construction of new parks? [4:00] Why are there not a lot of third-party managers in this industry? [6:15] On average, what type of return could you achieve if you were to buy a manufactured home and hold it forever? [7:50] What are the average premiums to property value right now? [10:15] How does Ryan conduct his research on this industry? [13:10] What kind of differences are there between the publicly traded companies like ELS and SUI? [18:20] Rental homes are like kryptonite in this business. How do companies like ELS and SUI manage their rental home numbers and are they making money? [21:20] What percentage of home rents are ELS and SUI having to spend to maintain their homes? Curious about this answer? Tune in next week for part 3! Mobile Home Park Investors with Jefferson Lilly & Brad Johnson
Welcome to Episode 74 of the Mobile Home Park Investors podcast, hosted by Jefferson Lilly and Brad Johnson, with the Park Street Partners. Ryan Burke is a Wall Street Analyst for Green Street Advisors. This episode is Part 1 of a three-part series. On the show, he discusses where the future of manufactured housing is headed. There is a strong manufactured housing demand from baby boomers and millennials, and since nothing new is getting built, we are seeing the strongest revenue growth upcycle that the sector has ever seen. Key Takeaways: [3:40] What did Ryan do before he joined Green Street Advisors? [6:05] What is Green Street Advisors and what does Ryan do for them? [9:05] To remain conflict-of-interest-free, Green Street Advisors do not engage in investment banking activities nor do they own any properties. [11:35] What kind of clients does Green Street Advisors have? [12:55] When looking at the bigger picture, where does Ryan see the manufactured housing business going? [14:00] Baby boomers and their children, millennials, are keeping manufactured housing in high demand. [16:00] Ryan believes these demands drivers will be in place for the next 10 years, if not more. [16:15] What’s going on when it comes to the supply of manufactured housing? [17:25] Why has supply become so constricted over the years? [18:20] What is Ryan seeing when it comes down to property-level characteristics? [22:20] This episode is the first of three parts! Tune in next week for the second part. BTIG's Rich Greenfield talks with Recode's Peter Kafka about being an outspoken media and technology analyst who has made enemies throughout Hollywood and much of the big-media landscape. Greenfield has advised clients to bet on Netflix and against Disney as the traditional paid content model breaks down, but also readily cops to the times in the past when he has been wrong. He also talks about why investors have to keep an eye on the startup ecosystem, the importance of data for anyone in media who wants to go direct-to-consumer, and why Google should buy Spotify. This week we spoke with Michael Morosi from Avondale Partners, an analyst that covers solar stocks. We spoke with Michael about most of the public companies which means we went a little long in our conversation that you don’t want to miss. Michael previously worked at Jetstream Ventures which was an investor in Sungevity so we spoke about the bankruptcy filings and what that means to the other residential companies in solar. He thinks Vivint Solar has potential upside as they turn around after their debacle with Sunedison. When it comes to stock prices, he sees a possible drop for First Solar. They are replacing their manufacturing capacity globally for their new product which means $1-$1.5billion in capital investments. A solar manufacturer with a $2billion private equity division is how Michael sees this. We end the conversation with some prediction and he’s had me thinking ever since our conversation with his foresight. As we have seen with previous episodes, the predictions are well educated guesses so I am interested to see this one come true. Find this episode on iTunes, Soundcloud and Stitcher Radio. In this episode of Still Growing…(SG), I feature Part 2 of my interview with The Weed Lady - Master Gardener Nancy Peters. Part 1 was featured in last week's Still Growing episode - SG510. To recap, Nancy cultivated her passion for weeds after a successful career as a Wall Street Analyst. Nancy approach to the study of weeds is born from her curiosity and respect for their resiliency. Nancy says, "As you get to know and recognize the weed, you can nod at it's good features or chuckle at it's ill-repute. You can make a better, informed decision about what to do about it. Whether or not to pull it out or what changes to make if you want to keep it out long term and with less effort. It seems to me that no absolute good or evil holds sway in the garden. Each good has some drawbacks. Each evil has some of it's benefits." As a reminder, Part 1 ended with a revealing look at the Canadian Thistle. In this episode, we continue that discussion and delve further into the fascinating biology of weeds. Author information Jennifer Ebeling Producer & Host at Still Growing... In this episode of Still Growing…(SG), I feature the uber-knowledgable Nancy Peters, also respectfully known as "The Weed Lady". Lest you think sweet little Nancy has spent a lifetime hunched over weeding, this Columbia Business School graduate enjoyed a successful career as a Wall Street Analyst with EF Hutton, Shearson, Morgan Stanley, Mobil, Prudential Securities, Smith Barney and EJ Lance. As Nancy tells it, she "went from Wall Street to Weeds." And, I am so happy she did. Nancy is a charming interview and a dedicated gardener who generously shares her encyclopedic knowledge of weeds with us in this episode of Still Growing. This episode will cover Part 1 of our discussion. Part 2 will be featured in next week's episode of Still Growing. Author information Jennifer Ebeling Producer & Host at Still Growing...
