The Tragically Hip On Shuffle - Live Stream: Wheat KingsA campfire singalong that's secretly about a wrongful conviction, a cassette thrown out a car window, and a tiny Eiffel Tower in Saskatchewan.EPISODE SUMMARY This week on The Tragically Hip On Shuffle - Live Stream, the wheel landed on 'Wheat Kings', and I had a couple of Andrews riding shotgun to break it down. This is the song the whole country sings around a campfire without ever clocking that it's about David Milgaard, wrongfully convicted of the murder of Gail Miller and imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit.Andrew from Winnipeg brought the timeline receipts (Kim Campbell, the CBC, the wild detail that Milgaard walked free in April 1992, months before "Fully Completely" even dropped) plus a story about his mom chucking the cassette out the car window somewhere in the Alberta mountains. Andrew from Tampa brought the live recording from The Fillmore, October 24, 2000, and the case for 'Wheat Kings' as a pure summertime staple. We get into the loon that cost the band a donation to Ducks Unlimited, the Zippo lighter, Paris of the Prairies (and the 28-foot Eiffel Tower in Montmartre, Saskatchewan). If you love The Tragically Hip, Gord Downie, and a Canadian rock podcast that treats a deep cut like it earns the attention, this one runs deep.GUESTSAndrew from Tampa joined by audio through a Florida thunderstorm and came armed with the Fillmore recording that scored tonight's listen. A devoted Hip fan stateside, he makes the case for the band as a summertime constant and named 'Emperor Penguin' as his favourite album-closer, a song he rations for the days he really needs it.Andrew from Winnipeg is a setlist.fm obsessive, a Crooked Ice bandmate (their album release show is June 4), and host of the weekly Radiohead deep-dive podcast Head Full of Radio. He also runs a weekly show on UMFM. His favourite Hip closer is 'Put It Off', and 'Wheat Kings' carries a complicated, personal weight he opened up about on air.Andrew from Tampa: "Is it about what it's talking about, or is it the way it's made millions of people feel?"RESOURCES, LINKS & REFERENCESThe Hip Handbook, used live to pull the tracking numbers (around 1,350 shows logged, 332 'Wheat Kings'performances). thehiphandbook.tthpods.comSetlist history via Hipbase (primary) and setlist.fm (secondary): first played in Saskatoon, July 27, 1991. The Fillmore, October 24, 2000 performance, shared by Andrew from Tampa from a YouTube upload. Sometimes when people hear or see something that's strange or outright bizarre, they might reply by saying, "What in the world?" That's the theme of this series of Crosstalk broadcasts as Jim looks at some of the strange and unbelievable stories making the news. The fact that such stories are becoming more and more prevalent goes along with the warning from the Bible that in the last days, perilous times will come (2 Timothy 3:1). Here are the stories Jim presented during the first quarter hour of the broadcast: California has seized a Christian woman's teenage daughter because she opposed her daughter's so-called gender transition. A federal court in Australia has defied the science that men, male down to their DNA, cannot become women by ordering damages paid to a man who was denied participation in the women-only networking app, Giggle for Girls. Amid a glut of anti-LGBTQ+ laws passed by the state legislature over the past half decade, many queer Texans have decided to pack up and move to greener and more supportive pastures by moving to Seattle. Now the city is considering declaring a civil emergency due to the number of LGBTQ+ "refugees" moving there from red states. An elementary school in Winnipeg has decided to do away with Mother's Day and Father's Day presents in favor of family gifts. Two Virginia police officers are facing suspension and possible termination for objecting to a gender confused male recruit being allowed to use women's lockers. A campaign event for homosexual California State Senator Scott Wiener, now running for U.S. Congress, featured a drag queen grossly dressed as half pig/half woman.

Episode SummaryOn this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with Liam Duncan, the Winnipeg singer-songwriter, producer, and bandleader better known as Boy Golden. Liam has been carving out a distinct lane in modern roots music through records like Church of Better Daze, For Jimmy, For Eden, and now Best of Our Possible Lives, his 2026 album released by Six Shooter Records. Along the way, he has earned major recognition in Canada, including a Juno nomination for For Eden and a Canadian Folk Music Award, while continuing to grow as both an artist and a producer.  We begin with the new album itself, which feels relaxed on first listen but reveals a deeper level of craft the more time you spend with it. Liam talks about the balance between intentional songwriting and the freedom of a loose studio environment, and he explains how careful pre-production gave the band room to breathe once the red light was on. That combination of structure and openness runs through the whole conversation. We spend a good stretch of time on the making of Best of Our Possible Lives, including Liam's collaboration with co-producer Robbie Lackritz and a remarkable studio cast that includes Pino Palladino, Abe Rounds, Austin Parachoniak, FONTINE, Gabe Noel, and Joseph Shabason. Liam shares what it was like to sing and play inside a rhythm section that strong, how live the sessions really were, and why letting go of technical responsibilities helped him become a better performer in the room. The result is a record that feels warm, human, and deeply played.  From there, the conversation opens out into larger questions about communication, collaboration, songwriting, and identity. Liam talks about learning to speak differently to different musicians, the value of being both a bandleader and a sideman, and why he does not feel especially tied to recreating his records onstage. We also get into the meaning behind the name Boy Golden, the freedom of writing through an alter ego, and the way fiction, metaphor, and autobiography all live together inside a song. What I love about this conversation is that Liam is thoughtful without sounding guarded. He is clearly serious about songs, sound, and arrangement, but he also leaves room for instinct, humor, and surprise. This episode is about more than one record. It is about what happens when an artist learns to prepare deeply, trust the people around him, and leave enough space for the music to become what it wants to become.Key TakeawaysLiam built Best of Our Possible Lives through a mix of deliberate songcraft and a relaxed, collaborative studio process.Working with players like Pino Palladino and Abe Rounds gave the music a rhythmic center that made everything else feel easier to sing and play over.Sharing production duties with Robbie Lackritz allowed Liam to step away from technical tasks and focus more fully on performance.  He adjusts how he communicates musical ideas depending on the player, whether that means theory, feel-based language, or simply playing something through a few more times. The Boy Golden name gave Liam more artistic freedom than writing under his own name, especially in how he blends truth, fiction, and storytelling. He values live performance as an art form in its own right and is not especially interested in reproducing studio recordings exactly onstage. He is already thinking ahead creatively, including new writing methods and experiments with combining multiple song ideas into larger suites.Music from the EpisodeBoy Golden - You Got itBoy Golden - SufferBoy Golden - The Matter at HandBoy Golden - Best of Our Possible LivesBoy Golden - ChickadeeAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast where I sit down with musicians, songwriters, producers, and creative thinkers for thoughtful conversations about craft, collaboration, career, and the deeper philosophy of making music. The others include Wolf Bronet, the Auschwitz survivor who founded Montreal's “Wolf Pack” running club and helped raise funds for 14 ambulances for Israel through Magen David Adom; Sara Vered, who fought in Israel's War of Independence before helping bring Israeli and Jewish culture to Ottawa through education, the arts and philanthropy; Al Osten, the former singer who built a Weight Watchers empire in Western Canada and donated millions, alongside his late partner Buddy Victor; and Sondra Gotlieb, the Winnipeg-born journalist and author whose sharp observations made her one of the most recognizable Canadian voices in Washington diplomacy and media circles. The public continues to question the effectiveness of homelessness and addictions agencies and programs- and none is under more scrutiny than the NDP's plan for a safe consumption site in North Logan. Episode 21 has a recap of the panel discussion held Tuesday night and audio of presentations made by Coun. Sherri Rollins and the federal health critic, Manitoba MP Dan Mazier.Part 1- Two columns this week provided readers of the Winnipeg Sun with details about A) the financial cliff that Siloam Mission is approaching: “When you kick out Jesus, you kick out his flock ofgivers,” a church-going reader said. “I know some of the former workers who moved on to other charitable work.”Siloam Mission went woke, now going brokeB) the community-organized panel discussion about operating plans for a drug user site at 366 Henry Avenue:“The deflection I witnessed from city representatives was appalling,” said a Point Douglas homeowner. “There's clearly a responsibility for all levels of government, andthe nuances and the intricacies were just lost on so many.”Panelists provide evidence that safe consumptionsites unsafe, ineffective 18.40 Part 2- Marty notes the demographics of the crowd, which drew concerned residents and property owners with personal experience with homeless encampments and the effects of drug addiction and crime on their community. From North and South Point Douglas, the East Exchange, North Logan, Centennial, Downtown, and Fort Rouge, they outflanked the SCS "harm reduction" supporters by an 80-20 margin. Among those watching and listening was Independent MLA Mark Wasilyw, and many PC MLAs; not there, were any representatives of Wab Kinew's NDP government that is ramming the drug use site through to fulfill his election promise.23.50 - Aboriginal Health and Wellness Centre CEO Monica Cyr tried to reassure the public. She said new medical and treatment programs are included in the building renovations, and the SCS will operate out of a vehicle parked on the lot until next February. She later admitted there was good reason to expand the area where security patrols and clean-up had been proposed in their "Good Neighbour" policy. We explain why that tardy realization actually lost her ground with stakeholders. 28.50- Audio of Coun. Sherri Rollins (7 min.): She spoke of the inadequate public consultation process undermining the residents, funding shortfalls affecting mental health and police services, the existing danger in the district, and the sight of drugs being used all over the streets. "Winnipeg cannot be absorbing the consequences of a provincial system that has not evolved or matured."You'll hear how later in the meeting Rollins drew a negative reaction from ward stakeholders to her contention that the city had no ability to regulate public safety mitigation for the site, even though the Health Canada rules say otherwise. 40.45 Part 3- Audio of CPC MP Dan Mazier (9 min.): His eye-opening remarks included what an addict told him about why 'harm reduction' giveaways discourage seeking treatment; taking on the left-wing lingo of saying there is a way to use fentanyl and hard drugs 'safely'; "imaginary buffer zones" and how a daycare in Ottawa was forced to close due to disorder and filth; and how Health Canada uses a 'rubber stamp' - and leaves it to neighborhoods to fight for their survival."Approving a place for people can consume drugs is the easiest thing a politician can do. It avoids the difficult serious expensive work of building real treatment and real recovery pathways. Instead it keeps people addicted, dependent and cycling through the same revolving door."Mazier predicted after this one, more sites would open, and then the radical left will demand the "BC roadmap" for safe supply and decriminalization - even though BC has reversed course.Marty provides more analysis to close the episode.****To sponsor TGCTS podcasts and support the Season 7 Funding Drive- email martygoldlive@gmail.com

Daly House Museum Part1 Intros and The History - Episode 242Road Trip!!!! Back in October 2025 we were invited to join The Winnipeg Paranormal Group to do a public Investigation at The Daly House in Brandon, Manitoba. It was a fun filled and creepy evening. Did you know that they have a Doll room? Dolls.......pfft, right?? Built in 1882, the Daly House is a small Victorian Mansion nestled in the heart of Brandon.  Originally the home of two of Brandon's prominent families – the Dalys and the Coldwells – it is now the only pre-1900 structure remaining on 18th Street, a municipal heritage site, and a fine example of Italianate architecture. This unique museum with its antique furnishings and displays, such as Mutter Brother's Grocery store, transports you back in time to the 19th century the moment you step through the doors. The house was originally owned by Thomas Mayne Daly, Brandon's first lawyer and City Mayor, Manitoba's first Federal Cabinet Minister, and Canada's first juvenile court judge. In 1898, Daly's law partner, George Robson Coldwell, purchased the house.  The Coldwell family resided in the house until the 1930s. At that time it was turned into a children's shelter known as the Maples. Forty years later it became Daly House Museum......and .....it's haunted!!! Thank you again to Ashley and Kelly from The Winnipeg Paranormal Group, for having us out. HUGE Thanks to my Guest - Ghost or is that Co-host - Krissy F. who joined me on this Brandon adventure. As well as Rick my camerman. More audio to come and hopefully video. In a province where politics increasingly feels like performance, what happens when the people who understand the stage best start talking openly about persuasion, authenticity, and fear? This week on Balance of Power, Annalise Klingbeil, Leah Ward, and Shannon Phillips unpack the politics of communication, the growing international fascination with Alberta separatism, and why the fight over Canada's future may already be underway.First: the Wab Kinew factor. Leah reports from the Canadian Labour Congress convention in Winnipeg, where both Naheed Nenshi and Wab Kinew delivered very different kinds of speeches, sparking a conversation about charisma, media training, authenticity, and whether great political communication can actually be taught. Then: Alberta as spectacle. The panel digs into recent coverage from The Guardian, Toronto Star, and other international outlets examining Alberta separatism, voter data controversies, and the rise of grievance politics. Is this necessary scrutiny, dangerous mainstreaming, or another example of Alberta being flattened into caricature for outside audiences?Plus: Jason Kenney's return to the federalist fight. After a Calgary event on Canadian unity featuring Kenney and MP Cory Hogan, the hosts debate whether conservatives who helped fuel western alienation can now successfully contain it, what responsibility they carry for this moment, and whether fear itself might be necessary to motivate Albertans to act.Media training, separatism, grievance politics, posture discourse, and the uncomfortable question of who still has the power to persuade.Welcome to Balance of Power.Have a comment or idea? Today Trevor goes for a walk through the Lemay Forest and learns from Dr. Ann why having access to nature is important for our health. Tune in to learn why she uses a questioning technique called “clean language” to get at what a witness really means behind what they're saying. The first test case centered on former wide receiver Arland Bruce. In arbitration, her team had no discovery and couldn't do a deposition. “I got on-my-feet admissions I would never have gotten had I not put the work in,” she says.Robyn explains that "clean language" is a questioning technique that removes a lawyer's assumptions and redirects focus entirely to what a witness truly wants to say, using the witness's own metaphors to draw out deeper, more powerful testimony.Robyn argues that if lawyers leave deposition techniques at the door of the courtroom, they are leaving critical information on the table — the very information a jury needs to understand negligence and damages.Produced and Powered by LawPods

The panel digs into a quiet, jammy deep cut from "In Violet Light" - and finds a father-daughter scene, a Bahamas-recorded slow burn, and one of the most conversational lyrics in the catalogue.Episode OverviewThis week on The Tragically Hip On Shuffle, host jD pulls 'Throwing Off Glass' - track six from the 2002 Hugh Padgham-produced "In Violet Light." Joining the virtual campfire are returning panelists Adam from Tampa, Andrew from Winnipeg, and Tyler from Etobicoke, who bring opening picks for favourite last song on a Hip album: 'Opiated,' 'The New Maybe,' and a tie between 'Impossibility' and 'Machine.'The conversation lands on a song that rewards a closer listen. The panel reads it as Gord in the car with his daughter, watching stoop-shouldered teens on a corner, trading new vocabulary back and forth - exquisite, iridescent, barbarous threats. Andrew points out the song feels jammed into existence rather than written, with the title phrase landing like a riff Gord caught on the fly. Adam zeroes in on the heartbreak underneath the scene: a dad clocking that his kid is on her way to a world he can't shield her from.Key Discussion PointsSequencing on vinyl versus streaming, and why the song lands differently as the closer of side AThe "Coke Machine Glow" connection: 'Trick Rider' as a possible companion piece, and the broader fatherhood thread running through Gord's writing in this eraHugh Padgham's production approach and the band's decision to record the album in The Bahamas after the workshopped sessions of "Music @ Work"The song's life on the "Men with Brooms" soundtrack alongside Sarah Harmer, Kathleen Edwards, Our Lady Peace, and Big SugarLive history: first played at the "In Violet Light" release party at the Hard Rock Cafe on Yonge Street, retired August 12, 2016 in Toronto on the Man Machine Poem tourPaul's understated electric work on the final tour performance, and Gord's whispered "true story" tag at the endSong of the Week ResultsOf 500 votes cast on 'Throwing Off Glass':56% loved it28% liked it9% tolerated it5% skipped it2% had never heard itComing Up Next WeekThe shuffle landed on 'Looking For a Place to Happen' for the next episode.A new podcast in The Tragically Hip Podcast Series, A Forest Of Whispering Speakers, premieres April 30th. Mike Malott headlines his first UFC event on home soil with the weight of the Canadian MMA world on his shoulders. The Ontario native headlines Saturday's UFC Winnipeg event opposite one-time welterweight title challenger Gilbert Burns. We haven't seen the best version of Burns for a while, with the Brazilian veteran having lost four straight fights, but he still presents Malott with his toughest challenge yet. Is Malott being set up to shine or could Burns be the reality check that puts a ceiling on his championship potential? Ahead of UFC Winnipeg, MMA Fighting's Alexander K. Lee and special guest Nick Baldwin preview Saturday's main event matchup between Burns and Malott. Additionally, Nick gauges the vibes in Winnipeg with a lineup that has faced heavy criticism and predicts which of the nine Canadians competing on the card will leave with their hands raised and the crowd cheering their name.
