In this episode, FAQ is: I'll be going to India soon. What are some ways to prepare for that trip? Today's Destination is Reykjavik, Iceland Today's Mistake- Biggest Windstorms in Iceland Travel Advice: Save Money by grocery shopping FAQ: I'll be going to India soon. What are some ways to prepare for that trip? Answer: To prepare for a trip to India, see if you know anyone who lives there now. It's the world's most populated country. Consider talking to them about your travel plans and what you want to do. I visited six cities, starting in Chennai and then Kerala on the opposite coast. Then, I ventured north to Hyderabad. After that, I went to Goa and then to Agra and Dehli. The cities where I had a connection or contact made me travel better. You can read the guidebooks, watch the YouTube videos, and do your homework first. Have a plan or goal for your trip; if your mission is world peace, like mine, let me know how you prepared. Even though I had planned the trip for years in my mind, there's nothing like going and preparing for the trip while on the trip, too. Listen for some future episodes on India with Dr. Travelbest. Today's destination: Reykjavik, Iceland Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, is known for its stunning natural wonders, but it also boasts cultural gems. Stroll through the colorful streets of the Old Town, visit the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church, and explore Reykjavik's vibrant arts scene at Harpa Concert Hall. For a breathtaking exploration of Iceland's unique geological features, embark on the Golden Circle route, which includes Thingvellir National Park, Geysir Geothermal Area, and Gullfoss Waterfall. Don't miss the opportunity to relax in the soothing waters of thermal pools, natural and manufactured. If you plan on exploring Iceland's vast wilderness solo, consider safety. Inform someone of your plans, equip yourself with a fully charged phone, and stay updated on weather conditions. The Icelandic Touring Association provides valuable resources for ensuring a secure and enjoyable solo adventure in the country's stunning landscapes. Despite its chilly climate, Iceland is known for its warm hospitality. Engage with locals at cozy cafes, attend cultural events, and embrace the friendly atmosphere of Reykjavik's pubs. The Icelandic people's warmth transforms solo exploration into shared experiences, fostering connections that make your journey memorable. Take advantage of the opportunity to savor the flavors of Icelandic cuisine in Reykjavik's eclectic restaurants. Indulge in fresh seafood from the grocery store called Bonus, or sample traditional dishes like lamb soup and yogurt-like skyr (pronounced Skeer) at local eateries. Reykjavik's culinary scene is a delightful exploration of Nordic tastes, complemented by the warmth of cozy establishments. Immerse yourself in Iceland's cultural offerings by attending local events and festivals. From music concerts to collegiate sporting events, these experiences provide perspective to your solo Nordic adventure, connecting you with the vibrant spirit of Iceland. Take time to relax amidst Iceland's stunning landscapes. Find solace in the city's hot springs, indulge in a spa day at the Blue Lagoon or at the public pools, where the fee is only $3.00 to visit, or simply marvel at the beauty of the Northern Lights (the Aurora Borealis), during the winter months. I met someone who saw these in September. Let the magic of Iceland's natural wonders be a backdrop for personal reflection and rejuvenation. Reykjavik was founded in 874 by Norwegian Vikings, who discovered the area's geothermal vents and established their first homes there. The city's name, Smoky Bay, comes from the fierce weather that has caused many to perish in the storms here over centuries. Today, Reykjavik has a population of 181,000 and is a walkable city with many tourists. The city is filled with flowers in the summer, and the long summer days make for short flying times to New York, Seattle, and DC. Reykjavik is the main city in Iceland, a must-visit for those seeking an alternative attitude, fresh produce, and innovative chefs. Other notable attractions include Hallgrimskirkja, eco-consciousness, geothermal swimming pools, and beaches, moonscapes close to town, and a monument to the Vikings on the waterfront. Iceland's exports include fish, and the country has a parliamentary democracy and hydrogen-powered transport expertise. The energetic and uninhibited culture, a mix of Scandinavian and Celtic origins, offsets the high cost of living. The popular discussion topics are Icelandic sagas, elves, whale watching, horse riding, hiking, and hot dogs with remuladi and mayonnaise sauce. Today's Mistake- Biggest Windstorms in Iceland My sister and her husband went to Iceland in February 2020. They hit a big storm season and had trouble with all of the plans they had made. Be prepared for weather adjustments. I was there in August 2023, and the weather was mild. T-shirts and light sweaters were all that were needed. Today's Travel Advice-Save Money by grocery shopping In Iceland, you can find prices exceptionally high, especially in restaurants. I could save much money if I made at least one meal daily from things I bought at the grocery store. I stocked up on chocolate for gifts for the family, too. Hello to you listening in Sofia, Capital of Bulgaria, Europe! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington, this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.Albert Einstein, a world famous scientist, asserted, "Imagination is more important than knowledge." Why is that? The reason is simple: our imagination isn't just a creative tool; having an imagination and using our imagination influences everything we do, think about and create. Our imagination is the driving force behind our theories, dreams, inventions, ideas, innovations, creations, and solutions. Without the power to imagine and dream we could not unlock the boundless possibilities our minds can envision. But wait! There's more to this tale. Imagination is the beating heart of storytelling! It allows both storyteller and listener to co-create mental images and emotional connections with the narrative. Imagination is the bridge between the words or images used in the story and the experience of being in the story. When you engage your listener's imagination with what I call a “heartfelt story artfully told” you invite them into the very heart of your narrative where they can see parallels in the story's plot and characters, and the events and people in their own life.Question: How does this work?Answer: To learn more click this LINK to listen to my newly launched Quarter Moon Story Arts NewsAudioLetter where I talk about the role of imagination to captivate, invigorate and empower your audience. As I've taught for 30 years, “heartfelt stories artfully told” have the power to foster community, understanding and empathy, improve attitudes and behaviors, collectively overcome challenges, and ultimately, change lives for a more harmonious world.Learn more about what I call the “sorcery of stories” so we can meet a world-wide need: hope and better stories! QUOTES FOR REFLECTION “No matter how good things get in this world, it's all Egypt! There will never be enough gold chains, fine linen, praise, adoration, or anything else to satisfy the yearning that God has placed in us. Only his presence in the Land of Promise will satisfy his people.”~Voddie Baucham, Dean of Theology at African Christian University in Zambia “Penance is a religious attitude deeply rooted in the human heart which prompts people to attempt to pay for their own sins by good works and sufferings. Self-justification is the goal of this effort.”~Jack Miller (1928-1996), pastor and seminary professor “Though repentance be a deep sorrow for sin…, yet the very nature of it necessarily implies delight. Repentance of sin is a sorrow arising from the sight of God's excellency and mercy…. ‘Tis impossible that anyone should see anything that appears to him excellent and not behold it with pleasure, and it's impossible to be affected with the mercy and love of God, and his willingness to be merciful to us and love us, and not be affected with pleasure at the thoughts of [it]; but this is the very affection that begets true repentance.”~Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758), New England pastor and theologian Question 88: What is involved in genuine repentance or conversion?Answer: Two things: the dying-away of the old self, and the rising-to-life of the new.Question 89: What is the dying-away of the old self?Answer: To be genuinely sorry for sin and more and more to hate and run away from it. Question 90: What is the rising-to-life of the new self?Answer: Wholehearted joy in God through Christ and a love and delight to live according to the will of God by doing every kind of good work.~The Heidelberg Catechism (1563) “Gradually it was disclosed to me that the line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either—but right through every human heart—and through all human hearts…. And even in the best of all hearts, there remains…an unuprooted small corner of evil.”~Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008), Russian novelist and Soviet dissidentSERMON PASSAGEEphesians 2:1-10 John 16 (ESV) 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment…. John 17 (ESV) 26 I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them. Acts 2 (ESV) 37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.Ephesians 2 (NASB95) 1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

If you've ever wondered, "Do I need a website for my small business?" - today's show is for you. Your website is the headquarters of your business – even if you don't have a brick-and-mortar shop. It's the cog off of which everything else for your business connects and expands. It wasn't like this in years past. But now, an online presence is essential. And make no mistake about it – your own website is what you should strive for. It's great to have a https://giftbizunwrapped.com/episodes/sell-on-etsy (shop on Etsy) or https://giftbizunwrapped.com/episodes/amazon-handmade (sell through Amazon). But long term, you want your own self-controlled site for the most stable business structure. So, today we're talking in depth about websites. Including the most important first question to answer before you even go one step further. Chase Clymer is the Co-founder at Electric Eye where he and his team create Shopify-powered sales machines from strategic design, development, and marketing decisions. He's also the host of Honest eCommerce, a weekly podcast that provides online store owners with honest, actionable advice to increase their sales and grow their business. The Answer To, "Do I Need A Website For My Small Business?" The biggest eCommerce challenge is finding product/market fit. Just opening a shop does not mean you have a viable business. Find out if the market wants to buy your product. Your product must solve your ideal customer's problem or fulfill their desire. Validating your product is crucial. Until you confirm that strangers will give you money for your product you have not validated your product. You have a business when that product is selling and paying your bills. The market share you could get from selling https://giftbizunwrapped.com/episodes/rahababy (a validated product) online is massive. If your goal is to increase your sales on your home base, you need to make a reason for people to go to your website. It's easier when your product resonates with your audience. Keep your navigation simple. The only things on the topline navigation should be the things that make you money. If your site doesn't allow me to get to the product I need as fast as I want to, I'll go to another website. Performance is crucial. The faster your website is, the higher your conversion rate is. Use an off-the-shelf theme for Shopify unless you're making $1m or more. Once you pass that milestone, it will be worth the investment for a custom theme. Don't trust themes that aren't on the Shopify theme store! Listen to the full conversation for more answers to do I need a website for my small business! More Ideas To Market Your Handmade Product Business Explore https://giftbizunwrapped.com/episodes/marketing-for-small-business (other avenues for marketing). Don't have all your eggs in one basket. Utilize other marketplaces (like Etsy and Amazon) to make more sales plus drive traffic to your website. Market to your customer in a way that they want to hear from you. Sending text messages is more personal and it's also noticeable. Keep the frequency lower on SMS vs email.

"Solution to what?", might be a fair question. Answer: To anything. There are no solutions to anything. Think that's crazy? Listen and see if you don't agree.
In 1643, the Houses of Parliament in England abolished the Episcopal system of government in the Church of England. An assembly of one hundred and twenty-one ministers and thirty laypeople was called to Westminster Abbey to rebuild the English church. The documents coming out of that six-year assembly are some of the most famous in church history. The first question in the Shorter Westminster Catechism reads, ‘What is the chief end of man?' Answer: ‘To glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.' The implications of that question and answer are profound in their simplicity. And if you're wise, you will make them a blueprint for your life this coming year. Glorify God. Obey God. Enjoy God. When you know your life is glorifying God, you enjoy His presence, but when you know your life is not glorifying God, you tend to avoid Him. And that's bad, because without God's presence in your life, what are your chances of true success? Not good! As you look back on last year, are there things you regret because you know that God was not glorified in them? Well, God is giving you a new year to do things differently. And if you're making New Year's resolutions, base every one of them on the foundation of this Scripture: ‘Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.' If you follow that rule, you will stay on the right path, and you will have the peace and joy of knowing your life is pleasing to the Lord. Whatever circumstances may arise, you will face them with peace and confidence, knowing that God is with you.
Question: What doth God require of us, that we may escape his wrath and curse due to us for sin? Answer: To escape the wrath and curse of God due to us for sin, God requireth of us faith in Jesus Christ, repentance unto life, with the diligent use of all the outward means whereby Christ communicateth to us the benefits of redemption. Series: Be'erot, Love & Relationship with God. Synopsis: How Yitzchak's fear/reverence of G-d creates a context in which love can come about. Episode Transcript It might help me to tell you that I'm feeling a little bit overwhelmed by the things I want to give over to you. With that said, I'll launch into what I believe is an appropriate continuation of we were exploring last time we met. And it revolves around the nature of how we become able to love and especially focused right now on how that happens with our relationship with Hakadosh Baruch Hu. And last time we spent time focused on the vulnerability that Hakadosh Baruch Hu allows for in His making of an other who can say no. And I want to continue with that this time and go into it more deeply. (Getting Chumashim with Rashi) The way I want to go about this is by introducing you to the idea of din in the world. The processes by which what we call din—judgment, gevurah, power—and that actually functions in a way in which we normally see that as being anitithetical to aspects of life that are love–oriented that have to do with chesed, with life enhancement, giving life, and yet, there is a most profound phenomenon, one of the deepest ironies by which we live: in order for there to be a relationship in which there will be a giver and a receiver, so there needs to be a withdrawal. By which I mean—and it's something we're all able to experience and know—if I truly desire the beloved, not that I should desire to be able to love, so then I need to withdraw myself, so that the beloved may become who he or she needs to become. And this, I'm going to pick up where we left off last time, the way Shlomo HaMelech begins Shir Hashirim, and he says, Shir Hashirim asher l'Shlomo, this is the Song of Songs of Shlomo, yishakeini m'neshikot pihu. Let Him kiss me with the kisses of His mouth. Ki tovim dedecha mi yayin. Because Your dodim, Your love, is greater than wine. And if you look at that verse, you notice, that this is the Song of Songs of Shlomo, yishakeini m'neshikot pihu is said in the third person, Ki tovim dedecha mi yayin. And then in the second person, because Your love is greater than wine. M'neshikot pihu. Let Him kiss me with the kisses of His mouth. We're talking to G-d. Ki tovim dedecha mi yayin. Because Your dodim, Your love, is greater than wine. And so in the verse, there is a shift from speaking to Him in the third person to speaking to Him in the second person. And this, if you remember , we explained, has something to do with, well as the Rabbis put it, a very profound difference between Torah she b'al peh, and Torah she b'dichtav, the Oral Law, and the Written Law, as it's usually reported as being. See, the depth of the difference between the Oral Law, and the Written Law is not that one is passed down orally and the other is passed down in writing (a phenomenon that is the result of something that's profoundly different about them), but rather that the Written Law refers to things which are directly given and revealed by G-d in the "face-on" relationship with G-d speaking face-to-face with Moshe, as the verse says, panim el panim, G-d spoke to him face-to-face. The Oral Law doesn't come about by G-d's revealing His face at all, but rather by G-d withdrawing, so that we should become those who will grow and create and develop by living in a space vacated from G-d's direct revelation, so that creativity will now be possible for those who live without a face-to-face contact with G-d. Let me say that a little more slowly. (What did you say about the Written Law?) The Written Law is what G-d, like I'm speaking to you now, says to you directly, which is what Moshe says directly. There's no real space there for you and what you need to become, create, and say, and what your life needs to say, and your particularity and specificity. Come on. The Law's the law, nothing to say, open the book, done. This is the Law, this is a chok, this is set in stone, literally. That's the nature of the Written Law. The fact of it being written is an indication of that. It's handed down in writing because that's the way it really is in its essence. But that's its essence. He's telling you like it is. But then there's this spaces (sic) In fact (8:53) one of the ways Rashi points this out is that the spaces between the words and sentences are very dear. And they express G-d's endearing, for instance, at the beginning of Vayikra, where it says Vayikra el Moshe, we're told that G-d told to Moshe, and He called him by his name. You should know that's a very crucial passage there at the beginning of Vayikra, because it describes how G-d reveals most of the Torah, from the Tent of Meeting to Moshe. Rashi reveals that he is called out by his name, yes, and there's another few statements that Rashi makes, but the important one I want to point out is the following. He says that He called to Moshe, the voice would come to his ears, the rest of the Jewish people didn't hear. Might it also be that G-d called Moshe for the spaces in between? (What do you mean, "the spaces in between"?) I'm just reading literally now. Because the spaces in between comes to tell you vay'daber. Called him for the speakings but not for the waitings. Well now, then what were the waitings for? Answer: To give Moshe a chance to integrate and to contemplate between teaching and teaching, and between one matter and the next. Certainly, Rashi goes on, when a regular person teaches and learns from a regular person; every time G-d spoke to Moshe, He would speak and wait. The waiting is the withdrawal, which allows for the moment during which Moshe Rabbeinu will himself be able to identify with and integrate what's been spoken. Okay, one level. The deeper level of the spaces in between, or the one we experience, are the space in between G-d having revealed Himself at Sinai, and the rest of history. The rest of history is one long pause, during which G-d is not speaking to us directly, but has rather withdrawn His direct revelation so that we should be mitbonen, which is to contemplate, draw out implications, draw out applications, creatively become involved in the process of revealing His word. So, that withdrawal is actually the path to the empowerment of the other to become what they are meant to become. In the case of G-d, ironically, withdrawal is what is necessary for us to reveal His own voice. His own revelation. But that's a complicating factor when it comes to G-d, so we'll put it aside for the moment and keep it first in what we know for life about how crucial it is. You see, oftentimes people mistake love for doting on someone, for being always there for them, for constantly being connected to them. That's devaikut. That's davak b'ishto. As you may remember, we saw in the Ramban, that couples completely couple together in communing. There's a constant awareness of the presence. That's what it's meant by Vdavak b'ishto. You know that Rashi says that therefore the man leaves his father and mother, joins his wife, and they become one flesh. That is that they are always in communion with one another. That's powerful and deep and connected to a relationship of love. But if that's all there is, then there cannot be love. And the reason for this is that love requires withdrawal, so that there can be an other whom I love. And that other must have the space within which to develop into that person of fullness, because they can blossom into the fullness they were meant to be by virtur of having been given the area and the arena in which that can happen. See, this is another aspect of what we were exploring last week when Adam Harishon has to discover his loneliness and the lack in order to truly enter relationship. That's from his perspective. But now we're looking at it from the perspective of the recipient of that love. If it would not be that there is a provision of space for you to be who you need to become, so that's not love, because I'm not allowing you to be the one who I'm in love with. Well, this is the way G-d made His world. And from the very beginning, there's the peculiar dance between ahava and deveikut, between love and full communion. With love involving actually a withdrawal which allows room for the other to be. And communion, deveikut, involving a full communing with that beloved. Do you have a little bit of a picture? Good, I really like it that I can just talk this way. But hopefully we'll bring it down even more alive for you. Let's appreciate this rather incredible dynamic upon which the world is created. This is the dynamic, that according to the Rabbis, Shlomo HaMelech is referring to when he says, "Let Him kiss me with the kisses of His mouth." Because your love is greater than the love of wine, meaning the following: When in the third person, so to speak, I'm experiencing You—Him—kissing me with His mouth, that He has withdrawn. That's why it's in the third person, as withdrawn. When I'm experiencing Him kissing me with His mouth—third person—ah. Your love, I'm now experiencing You very intimately, Your love is dearer than the love of wine. And if you remember, I explained to you that wine is the Written Torah, the direct revelation, when He is totally with us, davek with us. Like we say, v'atem hadeveikim bashem elokeichem, like the Rabbis say, deveikim mamash, truly deveikim, as it says in the Gemara in Sanhedrin, truly davek, like a flask has its cover at one with it. Glued to it, so that it's one piece with it. That's how the Rabbis actually describe that deveikut. A full oneness in communing, as opposed to the tovim dodecha, your love which comes from when you have withdrawn, is greater than the wine, which we say is the Written Toah, meaning that it's that which sits—that's how they read that verse. (Who's they?) The Rabbis. It's a Gemara or midrash that reads this pasuk this way. Yishakeini m'neshikot pihu, let Him kiss me with the kisses of His mouth, that's the Torah she b'aal peh. Ki tovim dedecha—the Torah she b'al peh—is greater than yayin. So that there's a process of Him withdrawing, third person, and then I'm experiencing His love, His dodim, in the second person of Him begin near to me. And that experience, the third person to the second person, is far more dear than the wine, which the Rabbis say is the Written Torah. I'm bringing that as an illustration of the way G-d has made His world, and that is that, quite astoundingly, in order for there to be a space in which we can exist, He needs to withdraw. And that withdrawal is known as the tzimtzum. And that tzimtzum is an act of din. (Passing out sheets) The Chasdei David, who was one of the great mkubalim, says, (19:35) T'chilat hakol haya or ein sof baruch hu pashut. V'ein davar panui mimenu. In the very beginning, the infinite light of G-d was utterly simple, and there was nothing empty of Him and His presence. When there was an arousal of His will to create worlds, whatever that is, and how that came about, that there should be a knowing of Him. So He contracted Himself, and left an empty space in the middle. These are all geometric terms that are meant to arouse some level of undertstanding. U'vmakom hahu he'etilu kol haolamot. And in that place He eminated all the worlds. And that tzimtzum is the root of din. Din being that which is the power to give things a place that is appropriate to them. To mete out what is appropriate to them by making space for them. See, in my meting out to you by virtue of my making space for you, so I am actually acting from the principal from din, as opposed to from the principal of chesed, which is a flat, undifferentiating awarding of existnece. So the way this is working now, that in order for G-d to make an other with whom there can be a relationship of love, so there must first be a relationship of withdrawal. So the Rabbis say the following: it's quoted here also in Rashi, that bereshit barah elokim, the name of elokim which refers to him as din, is the creator of heaven of earth. At the beginning, G-d thought to create it in din only, And then he joined to it the midah the rachamim. That's the Rashi here. Even hikdim the midah of rachamim, he even preceded everything with the midah of compassion. Now here's the catch, and it's a beautiful one. The word rachamim is the same word that we use for womb, woman, her uterus, her place of carrying a baby. That's exactly it. The mother withdraws herself, so to speak, from occupying all the space of her body, in order to allow that there should be an other that will become formed within her, and so her uterus is, so to speak, the sod of the tzimtzum, that allows there to be an other to be formed within in. That's the depths of shitafei midat harachamim (22:56). He actually created a whole context for this withdrawl, that it should be a place within which life will form. Now, the reason this is important to me for us to recognize is because of there is whole principal that is going on that is withdrawal leads to creative love; withdrawal leads to relationship and is necessary for it. It's a simple point, but it's one which is not always so available to us, I mean when we're raising children, when we're in relationship with another. And certainly, living in this consciousness, when it comes to our relationship with G-d is very challenging, and we'll see why and how that is as we go along. This is all sort of by way of introduction. And what I want to do with you today is explore the experience of the personification of this through Yitzchak Avinu. The way I want to do that is maybe a little bit odd at first. To take a look at one of the readings of Yitzchak, which is the only story in the Chumash where he appears to be active. And I want us to understand something. You see, it's important to know about the avot, that they are archetypes in the sense that the avot are the lived qualities and principals that we are describing. If we want to learn about Yitachak, then we need to understand what it is to live as the withdrawn one. In other words, the one who experiences in the depth of his being, G-d's having withdrawn to make space. So that he knows that indeed G-d is the infinite one for whom, when he is present, there is no room for any other, and that G-d, so to speak, sacrificed Himself to make room for us. You can see that in his life, in the way he sacrificed himself to make room for G-d. But he deeply experiences this phenomenon that there is none other than He, than G-d. And this is the experience of the Akeidah, and we've seen this in the past. Hakadosh Baruch Hu coming to Yitzchak to tell him, "You will no longer live," really leaves him speechless. What is he going to say? There is nothing he is going to say to Hakadosh Baruch Hu at that moment, because he has no entitlement to life. G-d is freely and lovingly giving him life at every moment, just like every one of us. He experiences that more deeply than anyone else because there was never anyone who G-d came to and said, through his father, that the one who gave him life in this world, you are not going to live. I am going to take your life away from you, and there was no one who had the experience with such trauma that there is nothing that you could say that would justify your right to continue living. I mean, after all, what would you say, that I've done a lot of nice things in the world? Where is that going to go? The life that you did all those nice things with is the very life given to you by the One who is now saying, It's finished, it's enough, gone. –But there are many more things that I want to do! –Well, I don't want you to do them. In that dialogue, there is only the space for the consciousness that it's all G-d, it's all Him, there is really no essential existence to anything than His existence. So Yitzchak knows this, and Yitzchak experiences more deeply than anyone that G-d has, so to speak, made space for us. Now if you understand Yitzchak as being the one who lives that, then Yitzchak is the one who, so to speak, makes space. What is that like, being the one who is always making space? (Very humble) Very humble. So look at something really interesting about Yitzchak's appearance on the stage of activity. And what I'm talking about is chapter twenty-six, verse twelve through fourteen. This is where we find him actually doing something. But we have to look very carefully about (sic) what it is he is doing, and how the Chumash describes that doing. So Yitzchak sows and plants in that land, and he found in that year one hundred portions, and G-d blessed him. And he gets very great, and he gets even greater, until he got really really great, he's gotten really big. And then he had a lot of possessions, and because he had a lot of possessions, so the plishtim are jealous of him. In verse fifteen, it says that all the wells he had dug, that his father had dug, actually, well, the plishtim had filled them up with afar. Avimelech says to Yitzchak, get lost. You're too big, we're not going to allow you to be here any more. So Yitzchak goes away and he encamps in Nachal Grar, and that's where he lives. Yitzchak goes back, and he redigs the wells that his father had dug, or that had been dug in his father's time, and that the plishtim had filled in, we already know about them, that the plishtim had already filled them in after Avraham had died, and he called them the same names that his father had called him . So Yitzchak was a reflection of his father, and he was, in a sense, continuing his way and maintaining what his father had brought into the world—these wells—at least in this aspect. Then his servants, they dig wells, and there is an argument with the plishtim and then there is another well that his servants dig, and there is another argument about it, and then he goes and he digs one, and its rechovot, it's very broad. Why? He says, because now G-d has made breadth, and we can truly multiply in this land. G-d has made space so that we can be fruitful and multiply. It's exactly the picture of G-d has made space. And all of this activity of Yitzchak is nothing more than making space. It looks like he's doing something, but actually, regarding his father, being a conduit through which his father's work will be maintained and continued, and in terms of the earth, he is digging away to allow what is there to become revealed. He's not really doing anything. He's the one who is making the chalal panui. He's digging away the earth so that the waters that are there, should be able to flow forth. Even his planting, the way the Torah describes it, he's plans, and then, wow! he finds in that year, in that place, a hundred times what he could have expected G-d bless it all (sic) 32:31. That isn't me, I didn't do this. I just found it. Vayimtza bashanah hahi. But what I think is most interesting is the way in which the Torah orders the story. Take a look at this. If you were having to order the verses in the story— There is a thing you do when you're trying to teach a kid how to write compositions, so you take a paragraph, and you mix up all the sentences, and you try to figure out which sentence goes before what. So, take a look at verse fifteen. Where should verse fifteen go? All of the wells that have been dug by his father's servants, the plishtim had covered them up. Those next two verses are out of place, because the next move that is in response to that is eighteen, right? It says that Yitzchak goes back and digs the new wells, or he digs the wells of his father. So that description of what needed to be done, or what was wrong, should then be described after that by what he then went and fixed. Everyone agree on that? Those two sentences in the middle, they are not supposed to be there. But they are. If you leave the perspective of Yitzchak, they are. Because even the way life unfolds, is so to speak, it's not your doing, it's that there's these filled-up wells which need clearing. Well, let me tell you a story. Avimelech comes to Yitzchak and tells him that it's time for him to move on. So Yitzchak moves on. And where does he end up? Right near his father's wells that need to be cleared out. You hear? It's not like it happened that he had this situation with Avimelech and then he goes to the place where the wells are, but rather that he needed to get to where the wells are, so the situation with Avimelech erupted to get him to the place where the wells are. That's the way the Torah tells you the story. First it needs to be corrected. Then it tells you the story unfolding, which gets him to the place where he needs to be. (Technically, I'm confused. Where are the wells, and where is he?) He's been in the land of the plishtim, (So the wells are in the land of the plishtim) No, the wells are in the land of Grar, where he now goes to. (So he returned…) Either he's going back to eretz plishtim, (Well, how can the plishtim be filling them up, if they're not in their own—) Territory? It's a question. I'm not sure I understand vayashov yitzchak vayachpor et be'erot hamayim asher yachfru bimei avraham that he went back and redug the wells which had been dug in the time of his father. That's the vayashov. Why is it that the plishtim were taking such vigorous interest in what he's doing in Nachal Grar, that needs to be looked at better. But I think the simple meaning of the word vayashav is that he went back and dug again what his father had dug. (Pasuk yud ayin, you said they should be there.). They need to be there at some point, because they tell the story of how Yitzchak had to leave and ended up, in the way I'm reading, going to the place where Avraham had dug wells. I don't know why they would fill in those wells. I actually have something I want to say about the nature of his relationship with the plishtim, but that needs to be better clarified. (They were jealous…) They were jealous. Something that's going on between them and Yitzchak that makes them into his primary antagonists. Yeah, Chaya? (According to the Gur Aryeh, the wells were located in the valley of Grar while the valley had been un inhabited, the plishtim would stop them up to withhold them from the attacking armies. When Yitzchak moved to the valley (unclear because someone is moving a chair) 37:51 B'seder, that was the Maharal's perush on Rashi. So we have two things. The most important thing right now is to see how the story unfolds through Yitzchak. It's something that needs to happen, and it will happen through him, but not by virtue of his doing, but rather by virtue of its needing to be done. Which will be done. Okay, if you like the point, good. It's not crucial. I think it's important to see how the Torah has ordered the things. Yitzchak is the man who digs out space. His is the life of a man who is nothing more than space. He is that open space. Now, the interesting thing is, that there is a very deep quandry, problematic (sic) that we live in our relationship with G-d, Who has made space for us, and that is—get this— you see, the more you live out being in that space, which is a consciousness that He is not here so that I can be here, well, the farther you are from Him. Again, the more you live out the space of being in that space which G-d has vacated so that you can be here, so in a certain level, the further away you are from Him. The less you live the consciousness of separateness and individation, so the closer you are with Him, the more at one you are with Him. I'll put it to you in life, although it's not exactly parallel. The more your lover has distanced himself in order that you should have room to become who you must become, the more you become who you become, the more distant you are from the one who you're wanting to be with. It's even deeper with G-d. In order for us to live this life, viewing ourself as separate and independent entitites, so we need to live it, so to speak, with a consciousness which blocks out the all-present infinite presence of G-d in which there's no space for another. And the truth of what tzimtzum is, more deeply than G-d's withdrawing. It's He who has given us a consciousness and awareness which has it be as if He is not here. See, it's our consciousness that He's given us that creates the reality which we experience as being one in which He is not here. I'll try to make this a little less wacko-sounding, I don't know, but you see, our minds work on a certain frequency. We pick up certain things. We hear the clock ticking, we feel the table, we can see each other, because we're picking up what's around us on a frequency at which we pick it up at that level. There are other things going on in the room that we don't pick up because we're not tuned to them. If our minds were actually like a radio tuner, we'd actually be hearing the news right now, probably the weather report, because there would be an attunement to something which we're not now attuned to, which then we could access and receive. We're all familiar with this, but we don't think about it that way. What's real is what we see and feel and touch and hear, and everything else isn't really real. Until we get into radio waves which, yeah, I guess it is real, so how come I'm not seeing it if it's not real? Well, there are realities which you can't see. Well, why don't I see them? Because you're not attuned to see them. You're not attuned to see infra-red, but if you would, then you might actually be able to see through the wall. See through the wall? What, are you off the wall? Yeah, I'm off the wall! I've actually inside the wall. (?) 43:36 Go to the other side of the wall. Why? Because I'm able to see with a frequency that sees right through matter. What, you wouldn't see the matter? No, I wouldn't see the matter. Could it be that I would vibrate at a frequency where I wouldn't feel the matter either? You mean I could just walk through the wall? Like Superman? Yeah, if you would vibrate at a different frequency, then that's the way you would actually experience things. You wouldn't experience this as solid matter, which it barely is, you would just experience it as something which would pass right through. (That's actually what scientists are working on.) Yes, that's what scientists are working on. And they are probaly going to get there soon. Because it's not a big deal, it's just a matter of changing your frequency. And tune us up, just a little bit, and then our vibration shifts, and then the way we relate to matter shifts. Everything shifts. Everyone knows this, when your emotional state shifts. And all the people whom you thought were offensive and ugly or repulsive, suddnely, well, he's kind of okay, well half an hour ago you were— Well, I was just in a bad mood. Now I'm in a different state. I'm picking up a different wavelength about my emotions and it's all shifting all the time. Emotions shift more than anything else. That's why they are kneged ruach in the four types of realities, so emotions are related to the wind, the air, as opposed to the ground, which is the body, okay, we're not going to go through them right now. But we experience those shifts all the time because we're shifting our frequency. Just to say it in that simple sense, so you realize so maybe there would be like a divine frequency, when I don't see anything at all, but when I see things from a divine perspective? There is nothing but Him? Yes, there is such a thing. There is such a divine frequency, And you actually have a part of you that is always vibrating at that frequency. It's called the yechida. It's your highest level of soul. It's always at the frequency in which there is nothing but G-d. Wait a minute, but there is me, yeah? Right, just turn down the…..(talking slowly in a low voice) fre-quen-cy on…the…receiver, and everything comes back to independent and separate realities. In fact, in Chassidut it's taught that the tzimtzum really is a phenomenon of our consciousness. That we see things as separate. And it's the great gift of G-d that we should. It's not that it's a hazayah, an illusion, that I see you. Just like it's not an illusion when I pick up the radio waves. But there's a reality which is sort of a different vibration, frequency, in which you're not there. There's only G-d. There's only his presence. Now, on a ceratin level, the more I saw you, so the less I see Him. If I could just tune up my frequency and only see Him, then I wouldn't see you, you're in the way. I'm in the way. This is a painful irony, probably one of the most painful ironies and paradoxes of spiritual life. And it had lead all kinds of spiritualities to all kinds of crazy conclusions. Including the conclusion of maya, of illusion. Because, I'll put it like this (48:05)…if the world were with no willing Creator, if it wasn't that G-d had a will, then indeed the fact that you're there is just an illusion, we're just not tuned to the highest, most pristine and true frequency. So you're an illusion, you're in the way. (Pause) I'm just talking to myself. (Laughter). But if One who made all that consiousness, which is the consciousness we all live, the One Who has a will and desires that we should have it, well, that changes everything. Then it's not just some illusion. It's what He wills us to have. Yeah, but it's not real! Yes it is, It's as real as the one who is giving it to you, and He's the most real thing that is! Bad, thing, not a good word. Do you hear that? It's G-d who's making us see things this way, that there is a place where He is not. That G-d, so to speak, Who is making us see things this way, is Elokim, that's the name Elokim. And it's why of all the names of G-d, it's the only one in the plural, Weird isn't it? We, the big monotheists, have a name for G-d that;s in the plural? That's bad, it shouldn't be that way. We have kel, shem havaya, but Elokim? And what's worse, that same word, if you think about many gods, that's just elohim. Same word. Because multiplicity is a product of din, which is the withdrawal. But that withdrawal is the creation of a consciousness which will see things as if He is not there. It's like you've put on dark glasses. You're wearing now the polaroid glasses so that you're only picking up a certain reality. So now I want to shift out of that. I don't want to be apart from Him, I only want to be with Him. You just shift out of that and tune up to a place where all I know is Him. And be completely mitbatel, completely gone from my ego-consciousness which is creating a sense as if I'm separate from Him. I'm going to let that go. It's a sin to be in that state of separateness from Him, I'm going to let that go. No, wait a minute. He made me that I should have this consciousness. So, it would be a violation of the will of the very One that I'm seeking to come close to for me to strip myself of that consciousness so that it will be only with Him, because He made me such that I would see all of you and myself as separately and independently existing realities. So what do I do? To strip myself of that is to come close to Him. No it's not, it's a denial of His will. But to stay in this reality in which I don't have the experience of His being wholely and completely and fully present is to lose Him. This is the paradox and ultimate tension within which any divinely-attuned human being lives. And Yitzchak, more than anyone, has really seen that there is nothing other than G-d. In Chassidut it's explained that he lives in a state of the yechida. That's why he's the one who's called bincha, yechidcha, your son, the only one, because he's actually living the "onlyness" of G-d. But ironically, one who lives the onlyness of G-d, to become really close with Him—so to speak, by becoming like Him—has to live uniqueness here. So he becomes the unique one. And this is because, when one realizes that it's G-d whose wanting me to have this consciousness of separate individuated realities, then I am now going to give ultimate and full reverance to every single unique being that is here desired by G-d to be here. See, someone who's never experienced that as only G-d will never be able to experience the ultimateness and value and worth of every single creature that G-d has made here, because he will never know how much G-d, so to speak "gave up that He should contract himself, that we should be here, or how much, so to speak, G-d has awarded us by giving us the reality as living as a separate entity. This is why din always also is the origin of yirah, reverence. Of being fully aware of the divinity of the other. And always dances around the smallest of myself (55:39) or on a different level, the ultimate worth of myself. Where, depending on whether you're experiencing the all-present G-d or the small nothingness of myself, or G-d Who has withdrawn to make space for me! And is therefore living a full and deep relationship of responsiveness, which is what din is, when I'm responding to you. What you do, I do to you. That's when things become energetically connected in relationship. So that it's either all abnegation, or the full and whole presence of another to whom I respond. Because G-d, making that person now, he can't have come from anywhere else, if it weren't that G-d were making him now, giving him that consciousness now of existing as a separate entity, giving me the consciousness now to see him as a separate entity. Should we have a little interaction here? Should I give you people a little space? (57:15) Could I just treat you to one more thing here? Why don't you ask your questions. (You said that Hashem cannot feel the specialness of every animal?) Chas v'shalom, I didn't say that. You said creatures. Okay, Kol hanivraim. Yesh lahem erech muchlachat, mipne she haboreh olam hu machlit bchol regah latet lahem et he yishut shelahem. Vmachlit bchol regah, He is deciding at every moment to give me to see Him as separate from Him. You can hear now why if you just rest in this a bit. You can hear why the phlishtim are Yitzchak's greatest antagonist. Here's a deep thing that's really wild. The Rabbis say that phlishtim are leytsanim. They are mockers, scoffers, cynics. And they teach this in a wild place. There's a Gemara in Avodah Zarah, page eighteen. I'm starting to realize that I have another two hours of talking here. We'll divide it up. So the Rabbis say, Ashrei haish asher lo halach b'atzat reshaim u'bderech chataim lo amad. And b'moshav laytzim lo yashav. So you have this verse which is the way that David Hamelech opens up Tehillim He says, Happy is the man, or well-estabilshed is the man who didn't walk in the ways of the reshaim. And he didn't walk in the ways of the chotim and he didn't sit among the scoffers. Hm. So, he didn't walk like reshaim walk, he didn't stand like chotim stand, and he didn't sit like latzim sit. (Laughing) That's great. So the Gemara says, this is all about Avraham, who didn't walk the walk of those reshaim who built the tower of Babel. Nor did he stand the standing of the people of Sodom, about whom it says that they were raim l'chataim, nor did he sit the sit of leytsim, namely the plishtim. All right, what's the deal? So the Maharal says that the reshaim anre people who are actively evil, they go and do bad things. Chataim are people who withdraw from doing good. That's why the word choteh means a lack. Pull back, like the anshei Sodom don't give Tzedakah. And then there are the leytsim, they just sit, they're the scoffers. They just sit back and laugh, What, are you crazy? What, are you nuts? You think this really means something? It's all just a empty black hole, there's nothing here! What, do you think you're going to get close to G-d. What are you trying for? Smirking at anything that anyone tries to do. Sit kind of sit back and, why would you even try to move, or get up? You're just wasting your time. It's all just a figment of your imagination anyway. It's all just an empty hole. Nothing real can happen here. That's why the word phlisha actually menas to break through a hole, right? That's exactly what they do to reality, they break a hole in reality. Plisha, pleshet. It menas to clear it away. Why, you know what? Gee. They also dig holes in the sand, don't they, except the holes in the sand that they dig is all of the reality that you see. It's all just empty. Except for them, when they dig the hole, it doesn't reach water. Because mfulash means that it's open at both ends, just goes nowhere. Mefulash in Hebrew, hamavoi mefulash (1:03:21) is one which is opened at both ends, it's just totally broken through, there's no water at the end of it, there's nothing there. What do you think? What, are you crazy? And guess what the chachamim say. Where do we know that the plishtim are leystim, scoffers, from? It says about the anshei plishtim, vayhi, katovli bam. When they were like really feeling good in the time of Shimshon, vayomru, kiru l'shimshon. Call Shimshon in, vayisachek lanu, and let him make us laugh. Oh my goodness, let him make us laugh. And this is the risk that Yitzchak lives, to laugh a laugh of scoffing. Because the one who knows there's an empty space, we live in empty space, knows that the realness of it is only by virtue of an awarded consciousness, which is only seeing things on a certain frequency. So why bother doing anything. There's really nothing to be born here. Nothing happening. And in fact, Yitzchak's name is a result of two kinds of laughter, his mothers' laughter and his father's laughter. And anyone who's ever sought a chauvinistic interpretation in the Bible, well, he's got to be bothered by Avraham and Sarah's laughing. Avraham's laughing, and that's great, and the Targum translates, he was overjoyed. Rashi says, ah, Avraham is a joy of fullness. And then Sarah laughs, and the malachim get there: Look, she's laughing! I didn't laugh—yes you did! I didn't laugh—yes, you did! You were scaffing(?) (1:05:52). What's going on here? Well my husband laughed! Shh. Quiet, get back in the tent! (Laughter all aroud) Until you look at what they say. There's also the male-female thing, that's also a part of it, but it's too complicated. So put that aside for now. But just look at what Avraham says: Could it be that a man of a hundred would give birth? Could it be that a woman of ninety would give birth? Astounding! You mean there can be birth out of this nothingness of my wife and of myself. Oh gosh, unbelievable, what joy. But Sarah says, it says, she looked at herself and she said, Me? After I've gotten so old? I would give birth? She's seeing herself in the dimunitive—I'm nothing, can't do it, forget it. Scoffing. Avraham is looking, You mean there was nothing and now there's something? Whoa. Unbelievable. And Yitzchak, in a sense, can go either way, and you know why? On a certain level, he does. One son is called Esav. And the other one is called Yaakov, and we'll see, B"H, how these actually live out the life of scoffing, or of being present to, in full presence, with what something called tmimut(1:08:04). But tmimut which lives in the tent, lives in the consciousness which we have been awarded, but that maintains a connection with the one who has been awarding it at every moment. Whereas Esav becomes the scoffer, vayivez, despises the bechora—You know why he despises the bechora? Because he really despises life The first born is just the gift of life. I'm going to be dead soon anyway, man , the whole thing is nothing. How long were you around? It's just nothing. Why would I want bechora. It's not just he's despising it because it's avodat Hashem—that's the result—is that he doesn't experience himself as one who would possibly find enough value in himself as being a servant of G-d , because life itself, how much have you got and what the heck is your life? Seventy, eighty; in our days—ninety years? You know how much ninety years is? It's a speck of nothing. That's Esav, that's why he's walking around tired and bored. The only he can find to entertain himself with is killing, which is denying reality, denying the other, taking away life. That's why ultimately, with this we'll close, the Rabbis say, You know who the great-great grandson of Esav is? He's a man named Haman. And the Rabbis say, that same vayivez, et ha bechora that Esav despised—the "first-born-sonness"—became, many generations later, vayivez haman lishloach yad l'mordechai lvado. Haman despised killing Mordechai alone. And the Rabbis say, bazui ben bazui, the despised one, son of the despised one. That's Haman, who's the Amalakite, the great scoffers of reality. And what did he despise? That he kill one person. What the heck is one person? Man. If I'm going to kill, it might as well be an entire people. But the depth is, that vayivez, even though it says that he despised, the Rabbis say that he is the despised one, the despicable one, because anyone who despises, must also be experiencing himself as despicable on some level or another. You can't be despising another in their reality unless some place in your heart you're despising your own. So that the leytsanim are the great threat to Yitzchak. But that's not his life at all. B"H we'll see next time the real life of Yitzcahk and actually how he becomes the great source both of forgiveness, and of the ultimate valuing and adoration of life and other in reverence. How are we doing? I'll just check in with where people are holding. Confused? Enlightened by this? Or I need time to think about this, or this means something to me. I'm actually serious about the question. (I feel like I'm internalizing it. Me too. I'm like, observing it. Really grateful. You can be adversary. I need time to digest. It's big piece. It's beautiful.) Okay, that's a relief. I'm going to make closure now, then I'll take questions, then we'll take time for integrated work. How this is all related to loving, is Yitzchak is the principal of making space for love to come about. He himself, in his relationship with G-d, the Rabbis teach, is not in a relationship of love. Because he experiences love as non-existent in the presence of G-d. To be a lover, you need to be in existence. But he knows the great love of G-d in having made space that there should be an other. (01:15:50) Because the whole reason G-d made space that there should be an other is an act of love that there should be an other with whom He will have a loving relationship. And this is the meaning of the beginning of the parshah, where it says, Eleh toldot Yitzchak, These are the generations of Yitzchak. Avraham holid at Yitzchak. Avraham who is the principal of love, he gave birth to Yitzchak, he gave birth to the principal of contraction and withdrawal. Because the whole reason for the contraction and withdrawal is that there should be the appearance of Avraham, the appearance of love and compassion. All this withdrawal is for that. So he serves that purpose in the withdrawal, just like withdrawal serves that purpose. (So you're saying Yitzchak doesn't love Hashem?) The Rabbis say that he lives in total awe of G-d. Avraham is the lover of G-d. Chas v'shalom to say that he doesn't love G-d, but that's not his, these are archetypes, and his archetype is fear and awe. That there's nothing but Him. (That's what he represents.) Right. But he is in the consciousness that that vacating of there is nothing but Him, when G-d does make that space for there to be a world of love, and that's why he is the first one to love his wife, because out of that he sees, Wow, if there's someone there, and I have the consciousness to see her? That means that G-d is really, really wanting this; really, really wanting her; really, really wanting me. And so he experiences the depth of an other and himself with far greater intensity that anyone else can in their uniqueness and in their utter separateness. See, this is his power and it all is derived from a G-d who desires a world in which there should be love, and therefore again, paradoxically and ironically, withdraws Himself so that it may be. On a certain level, we blow this as parents, very often, when we think our children need us taking care of them, doting on them, watching them, guarding them, directing them, all the time, feeling our love for them all the time by our being there for them all the time. All the time for them. That's deveikut. But love also requires the principal of withdrawal. But as parents, oftentimes, we're afraid to withdraw, because our kids might stop loving us. Oh, No! Yeah. If I withdraw, then my kid won't love me. Hm. So who are you loving exactly? If you're really loving them, then you have to let them grow. Of course, guide them, teach them, etc. (sic) But there's a shift in the drivenness in I'm always wanting them to know that I'm loving them, and loving them. Is it coming from your neediness? Or is it coming from your wholeness, that will determine that. (I have a question about the zugim. Is it that Yitzchak and Rivka have like a giving and receiving side to each like sefirah that they represent?) I'll tell you something about Rivka, and it's like a really amazing thing to know, that if you look at the way she's chosen. I'll choose two deep things and I'll try to say them really briefly, and you can listen up, we talked about this last year. B"H I'll put this up on a website. I have a website but I don't know how to operate it… So,…the place the Rabbis learn that a woman has a say in the question of whether she gets married or doesn't get married to the man, is from Rivka. Up until then, you don't find the woman having any say, and he takes her, he takes her, he takes her, she gets pregnant, she gives birth, she gets pregnant, she gives birth, and they begat, and they begat. Begat, begin, begat, begin, right? But then, all of a sudden there's this wild scene where they say, Well of course we're going to send her with you; after all, it's clear that it's come from G-d. Scene two, wait a minute: what if she stays another year, or maybe a couple of months, or couple more weeks, and Eliezer says, No, no, it's time, it's time right now. Well, lo and behold they say, we have a drastic idea. Why don't we call her in and ask her what she thinks. Ta dum! Woman liberated. She becomes the other. She becomes the knegdo. And this appears first with Rivka because she's going to be living with Yitzchak who's the vacated space. So she must be the one who is in power to stand on her own two feet and be able to say no. That's the only presence that he'll really be able to love, from the vantage point of the one who is vacated space. Was she really three years old? Yeah. The point is, this is very important about Rivka. That's why we explained that camels were a very important thing in the story. That's why her test was whether she would give the camels to drink, because camels are about independent standing…But that's the nature of Rivka. This is why, by the way, and then we'll end this. (Sighs) Someone's got to create a kli here, someone's got to stop me, otherwise I just keep on unraveling. But, um—anyone volunteering? (I want you to keep going! [Laughter.]) What I really want to do is workshop work, because it's extremely vaulable. I'll just say one more thing. The reason why Eliezer goes out is, to seek the wife for Yitzchak, is a total representation of that. And that is that Avraham says to him, and very briefly, to go and get my (sic) wife from somewhere else. Well, maybe she won't come. Maybe she won't come? Of course she will come! G-d's going to send his angel who's certainly going to guarantee that this is going to be a success, and you're under oath, and you know what, if she doesn't come, then—forget the whole thing. That's mamash what Avraham says. You look at that and say, What? Where is his bitachon? And why isn't he certain that G-d is going to make it happen? Because you can't be certain that G-d is going to make it happen. You're dealing with another person, for whom there must be space within which to say, "no." And to know that and to know that it's all G-d, and it's His doing, and it's His reality, all at once. Sorry not to leave you with something clear, because it's not, it's a ratzo v'shov, back and forth, all the time, and it's from that space that real marriage comes about, and real love comes about, and the possibility for forgiveness comes about, too. I just want to remind us of what we want to look it. Okay. I'm stopping here. (You were talking about multiplicity. I didn't get it.) All I was saying was that din creates the possibilitiy that there will be significant others. So therefore there will be rebui, multiplicity, that there will be many. Chesed doesn't make room for many, chesed just gives existence. It's flat. (So it's not real self-centeredness. It's that you have that room open for another person to exist.) That's right. Okay. (So in order to be able— I don't know, I just feel like they're… one extreme and another, so is the goal not to be able live simultaneously in duality where we see the delusion and past the delusion? Yes, I would avoid calling it delusion. (Okay, the creation?) Yeah, and that will have everything to do with Yaakov. (All right.) Good. (That's awesome, and I want to find some way to experience it, not making it too cerebral, not thinking about it, where we could (write out/ride out?) places where we don't see G-d in our lives in our world. We might think about this one and think, how does this distance create love? To apply that kind of question to it, and maybe do it in some kind of meditational form. That seems like intellectualizing it instead of experiencing it, I feel that it would be valuable to experience what you're talking about. To experience that G-d is not in this situation and how do I experience that as a gift?) As His allowing me to become what needs to be for me as an act of love, and the way He allows that to be is in His withdrawing, the obviousness or overtness of His presence. That's big stuff. It even seems related to the last two exercises in that one was about recognizing the good and then feeling the lack of it, then praying for it, and one about the power of (inaudubible due to mike moving) the lack and asking to get the experience the, feeling the lack of not having your partner… that's the necessary step towards the fulfillment of it. This is different in that it's just feeling the lack. And knowing that G-d's in that. That's the higher level. Yeah. That's the higher level. So, how can we create a setting where people could just experience that? I want to say, first of all, regarding what I introduced last week, which was about accepting and being whole with the experience of the chisaron as a place from which the awareness of the need will lead to prayer or action, was very significant for me. I did it more than once. Accepting that is so crucial, and to do it open-heartedly and not in bitterness. Crucial. So I hear you, I think that can work, what you're describing. I think like, maybe just calling upon people to do that. Usually people need an interpretation, like a reframing to know that Hashem is in that. You know what I mean? I thought He was gone, but really He was there. And I see how He was there in those moments that were so painful and dramatic and difficult for me. That's usually how that kind of forgiveness is accessed. Wholeness with things is accessed. But here we're talking about before that. This act of withdrawal itself is the act of love. Giving me the opportunity to become an even more unique and different being. Right, this is the soil in which I am flourishing that G-d has given me. So pratically how to get there. So this is the idea that I have…
We live in a world where very little makes sense anymore. Even the definition of “right” and “wrong” has shifted and truth has become more relative leaving some to wonder if “sin” is even “sin” anymore. And if it is they want to know: “what is it?” “Is it really that bad?” “Does Jesus really hate it?” Bigger yet: “Is there a solution for it?” TEXT: Romans 5:12-17THIS SERMON CAN BE VIEWED ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL:https://youtu.be/Jra4c6cuyOQWorship Service of Bethany Baptist Church (Wendell, NC/Raleigh, NC) November 21, 2021

The best exercise equipment to get Question: Would love to see a video on the best equipment for building a performance/rehab gym in regards to the model you use. Even the brands/model ....safety bar, ramps, hex bar, etc. Answer: To improve movement options, you don't really need a whole lot of equipment. You just have to ensure that you can challenge your body to get into positions it normally struggles with. The hope is then that you are crushing life once that happens. That said, the right piece of equipment can help quite a bit at enhancing both your movement and fitness. Here is a list of stuff I would look into, depending on what your budget is: The home gym essentials Heel Ramp - These are essential to improving your squat depth, which is a critical motion to improve your movement options throughout the body. A heel ramp makes it easier to vertically displace the pelvis. I like the one that my boy Levi Kirkpatrick makes get large. Olympic lifting shoes can also be an alternative, to which The Nike Romaleos are the best. If you want to save some buck, use books PVC pipe - These are useful to do supported lower body activities and can incorporate rotation through the trunk. Dowel rods work great as well. Kettlebells - These are quite versatile and offer way more loading options than dumbbells. They are much easier to hold for squats as well. Power blocks - These are adjustable dumbbells that can save you space. Superbands - these are great bands that provide versatility in loading for pulldowns and chops. Cook bands - These bands are great for jumping, chops and lifts, unloading exercises. They rock! Airex pads - These make any kneeling or inversion-based activities go WAY better. BFR cuffs - These can help provide a great training effect at a fraction of the workload. My favorite brands are Occlusion Cuff, Edge, and Owens Recovery Science. Weighted vest - When you get too strong for bodyweight stuff, this is a must. Wooden plyo box - I love these for step-ups and more! Gym equipment for a bigger space and a larger budget Adjustable bench - Having decline capabilities is a must, as the slight inversion is great for improving your movement options. Trap bar - A must. It's a great middle-ground between a squat and hinge. Power rack - If you are going to be lifting heavy weights, this is a must. If you get a retractable wall mount version, it'll save you space. DC blocks - These are useful for adjusting the height of your pulls but are also great for grading step-ups, jumps, and everything. Barbells - A classic to get jacked. Slideboard - A great piece of equipment for improving frontal plane mobility, pronation, and gives you tons of variety. You can do hamstring curls, body saws, the possibilities are endless. Sled - Use for pushes, drags, pulls, all types of awesome stuff. TRX - The amount of variety you can get to do with bodyweight stuff is endless with this piece of equipment. Plyo boxes - You want something with a hard surface to land on and is adjustable. If you are doing any jumping, this is a must. Mini hurdles - Once you've nailed box jumps, hurdle jumps are the next logical progression. Adjustable cable system - You want something that you can move in multiple directions. Glute ham raise - Great for nordic hamstrings and side hangs. Specialty bars - I don't use often because you can accomplish most things with the regular stuff. If I had my choice, the spider bar, safety bar, and neutral press bar would be my top choices. The transformer bar also sounds appealing but I haven't played with it. Raptor - Great for resisted sprints, backpedals, and more. The best part is your hands can stay free and move! The best cardio machines that also improve your movement assault bike - I love it because you can alternate pushing, pulling, and rotation! Elliptical - Another great way to drive rotation. Versaclimber - One of the best options to drive frontal plane conditioning. Your ribcage is going to be opened up like cray cray. Jacobs ladder - Resisted crawling for conditioning? Drivinng all types of thorax rotation? I'm sold. Treadmill - Although the free-running treadmills are dope, I like the classic ones to drive high incline walks and to run on when they are turned off. If you got the money and space Buy machines. Straight bodybuilder stuff. I love these for the following populations: geriatrics, obese, deconditioned, post-surgical, and variety with peeps who do a lot of free weight work. It's just fun.
5.1-Makkos Daf 04 A (Middle)*Summary* *Rabbi Yehuda Amar Rav:* If a keg of wine fell into the sea, one cannot immerse in that spot. This was said with regard to the Yam Hagadol, or a lake whose waters are relatively still. *A supporting Beraisa:* If a keg of wine fell into the sea, and one immersed in that spot, he remains _tamei_ . If _terumah_ fell in that spot, it becomes _tamei_ (because the wine in that spot became _tamei_ from the person who was trying to immerse). *Question:* Why is the law of _terumah_ mentioned? (It is obvious that if the man is not purified, he remains impure, and the wine becomes impure!) *Answer:* To teach that the man remains _tamei_ , not because of a _chazakah_ of _tumah_ oil. If that were the case, then the _terumah_ should have remained tahor because of a _chazakah_ of _taharah_ . But the rule is that we assume that the wine remained in place._________To learn the with *tosfos:* http://chilp.it/8b3fd8e See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Intro…Welcome to the Cornerstone Baptist church podcast. My name is Justin Wheeler, I am the preaching pastor for Cornerstone and today we are in week 46 of our journey through the Heidelberg Catechism. Today, I will be talking to you about question 120-121.This week we will begin working through the Lord’s Prayer from Matthew 6:9-13.Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgives us our debt, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. This is a prayer that many of us learned as children and have repeated over the years in various settings. I first learned it with my football team in junior high and we would pray it together before games. I wasn’t a believer back then but still this prayer became etched in my memory and it still serves me well today.I became a Christian while in college and as I began to learn various spiritual disciplines that help believers grow in faith and love, this prayer became much more precious and meaningful to me. It helped me to rehearse certain truths that my heart and mind needed to meditate on. It gave me a guide for how to shape my prayers, and I really needed that because no one took me aside and taught me to pray.Transition…But in all honesty, that’s exactly what this prayer is; it is specific instruction from Jesus on how His disciples, how believers in Christs, should pray.Luke 11:1 Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” 2 And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name…So, this is Jesus teaching all of us how to pray. Jesus is giving us a first-hand lesson on what it looks like for us to pray to God. This is how we should pray and this is how we should understand our relationship to God, whom we are praying to. And the first thing that Jesus tells us should adorn our prayers is an acknowledgment that God is Our Father.Lord’s Day Focus...Question 120: Why has Christ commanded us to address God as: Our Father?Answer: To awaken in us, at the very beginning of our prayer, that childlike awe and trust toward God, which are to be the ground of our prayer; namely, that God has become our Father through Christ, and will much less deny us what we ask of Him in faith, than our parents refuse us earthly things. For some of us, the command of Christ to call God “Our Father” comes with some difficulty or personal baggage. For some of us, the Fatherhood of God is a bit challenging because you grew up without a father. Or maybe you grew up with an angry and abusive father who never showed grace, or perhaps a weak one who never stood up for you to protect you. Some of us were blessed with wonderful fathers, strong and safe, with big hearts and firm hands; I thank God for my father.Others may struggle with the Fatherhood of God because they consider it sexist and would prefer to worship a goddess. But God hasn’t revealed Himself to us in that way. He is never called goddess, mother, or queen in the Scriptures but rather God, Father and King. In Matthew’s Gospel we see the Fatherhood of God referenced 44 times, second only to John’s gospel where God is called Father 109 times. The Fatherhood of God is foundational to Christianity. The whole goal of Christ’s mission is to reunite us with our heavenly Father.John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.Jesus is the way, the way to what, the way to the Father. When a person comes to faith in Christ they are adopted into God’s family and made a child of God and an heir of the Father’s kingdom right alongside Jesus. Through Jesus we have a relationship with God that is defined as a relationship of a father to his child. My wife and I have been married for almost 19 years and we have three children; Caroline 15, Luke 14, and Samuel 11. As they have grown and matured they have gotten better about how they ask for things, what they ask for and when they ask; but when they were younger they would ask for whatever they wanted with no regard for decorum. If they wanted something or needed something they would come with a childlike expectation that no request was too big, no want was off limits; they just came and asked. I have one son who still thinks he should have dessert after every meal and he still asks for it.Our prayers to the Father should be guided by a more mature request than for ice cream three times a day, but the attitude, the impulse, the recklessness that governs a child’s requests should inform the way we pray to our heavenly Father. Now, I am an imperfect father, but my desire is to be generous with my kids because I love them, and I want them to be happy. I want to give them good things, cool things, fun things. But my desire to be generous doesn’t even come close to God’s desire to be generous.Who is God? He is the universes Creator and Sustainer. He is holy, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent; and He is our Father. He knows everything, even our needs before we present them to Him. We don’t have to persuade Him or manipulate Him into caring for us, He loved us before we were born, and He will love us forever and He desires to give us the best gifts in the world. Why Did Christ command us to call God “Our Father? Because Christ wants to kindle in us what is basic to our prayer – the childlike awe and trust that God through Christ has become our Father.” Childlike awe causes us to respect and revere the name of God. Childlike trust causes us to know that there is nothing greater than our Father’s will being done.Question 121: Why is it added, In Heaven?Answer: Those words teach us not to think of God’s heavenly majesty as something earthly; and to expect everything necessary for body and soul from His almighty power. There’s a song that we teach to our children and it goes like this,My God is so big, so strong and so mightyThere’s nothing my God cannot doIt is a comforting thought to know that there is nothing beyond the scope of God’s power. It is comforting to know that this limitless and powerful God is our Father. It will change our life when we grasp that this almighty God has instructed us to come to Him in prayer asking for every need that we have to be supplied by His power.God is not a limited Father who can’t tell the difference between a good gift and a dangerous one. He is not an influential man who has limits, but rather is the sovereign ruler of all who has everything at His disposal. When we pray to Our Father in Heaven we are taking our requests, the needs of our body and soul, to the very throne room of the universe. Our prayers are echoing in the throne room of Heaven. Our prayers are pinned up on Our Father’s refrigerator. God hears you and His heart is inclined to you because you are His child.I think we could all stand to learn again what it means to pray like a child. When Jesus wanted to teach his disciples about the dynamics of the Kingdom, He invited a child to come and sit next to Him and Jesus told the disciples that they needed to be more like the child. Humble, needy, unashamed, unembarrassed, bold, playful and willing to come and ask God for everything. And this God who is our Heavenly Father will meet all of our needs, both body and soul, according to His will for us and out of the almighty power that He wields.Thank you for joining me today to discuss Christian prayer. Next week, we will dig a little deeper into the Lord’s prayer to learn what it means for us to ask for God’s named to be hallowed. I hope you will join me for that discussion as we look at Lord’s Day 47 and question 122.Conclusion…If you want to learn more about Cornerstone Baptist church, you can find us online at Cornerstonewylie.org. Intro…Welcome to the Cornerstone Baptist church podcast. My name is Justin Wheeler, I am the preaching pastor for Cornerstone and today we are in week 32 of our journey through the Heidelberg Catechism. Today, I will be talking to you about questions 86-87.Transition…This week, we begin the third and final section of the Catechism. We have completed the sections that focused on our guilt before God and the grace that God has shown us; now we turn our attention to the section on our gratitude for God’s gracious work in our lives. The aim of this sections is to understand how God’s grace motivates the response of our heart and life.To kick off this new section on gratitude, we are going to look at questions today that try to make sense our Christian commitment to good works, despite the fact that our salvation is completely a work of God’s grace. If it’s all of grace, then why should we do good works at all. And just so we’re clear, this is not a new question. In fact, the Apostles James, John and Paul all addressed this question in the NT letters they wrote. In Romans 6, Paul wrote, “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?”In James 2, we read, “What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”In 1 John 2, John wrote, “4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: 6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.”The question of how the grace of God goes hand in hand with the obedience of good works in the believer is an important one and the Heidelberg does a really good job of answering it.Lord’s Day Focus...Question 86: We have been delivered from our misery by God’s grace alone through Christ and not because we have earned it: why then must we still do good?Answer: To be sure, Christ has redeemed us by His blood. But we do good because Christ by His Spirit is also renewing us to be like Himself, so that in all our living we may show that we are thankful to God for all He has done for us, and so that He may be praised through us. And we do good so that we may be assured of our faith by its fruits, and so that by our godly living our neighbors may be won over to Christ. The Catechism gives us five reasons why good works must be the pursuit of our Christian life.1. Because Christ by His Spirit is renewing us to be like Himself. The Holy Spirit is working in our hearts to convict us of sin, righteousness and the judgment to come. The Spirit is growing us in the knowledge of God’s Word and in the obedience of God’s Word to the point that we are becoming more like Jesus.2 Cor 3:17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.2. We do good works to show our thankfulness to God. Gratitude for God’s mercy and grace is not only a right response but it’s also a response that is noted in Scripture.1 Pet 2:1 So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. 2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. The fact that we have tasted the goodness and kindness of the Lord, is what fuels and motivates our turning from sin and longing to grow up in the word.3. We do good works so that God might be praised.Matt 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. When we obey God’s commands, we prove that He is good. We display His goodness to the world.4. We do good works so that we can be assured of our faith by our fruits. Yes, God alone saves us by grace and through faith. We are saved by faith alone, but not by a faith that is alone. When we do good works in response to our salvation by grace, we are producing fruit from a heart that is rooted in Christ.Lk 6:43 “For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44 for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.5. We do good works in the hopes that others might see, and the gospel might be commended to them.1 Pet 2:12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.Phil 2:14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world. The bottom line is that the New Testament is filled with passages that call us to respond to the grace of God in our lives with faithful obedience to the commands of Christ. It doesn’t call us to perfect obedience, perfection was achieved by Christ alone and His perfection was attributed to us when we believed. But in response to His amazing grace and love we are called to love Him and to obey His commands.Question 87: Can those be saved who do not turn to God from their ungrateful and impenitent ways?Answer: By no means. Scripture tells us that no unchaste person, no idolater, adulterer, thief, no covetous person, no drunkard, slanderer, robber, or the like is going to inherit the Kingdom of God.If obedience to the commands of Christ is important for those who are saved it is also a key component to determining whether or not a person is truly saved. Christ teaches us that, “Unless we repent, we will all perish (Luke 13).” People who claim to be Christians but continue to live in unrepentant sin are a walking contradiction. We just finished studying through the NT letter of 1 John. Throughout that letter, John is trying to help the church understand relationship between our faith in Christ and our obedience to Christ. He wants us to know the truth that our relationship to God (spiritual reality) has a huge impact on the way we conduct ourselves in this world (physical life).John writes “If we say we have fellowship with God, who is light, but we continue to walk in darkness, then our word (what we say) is a lie and we are not practicing (walking in) the truth.”John is pointing out that there must be consistency between one’s profession of faith and one’s conduct. You can say you are right with God all day, but if your life is defined by sin, then you are lying about your relationship with God. You might have made a profession of faith, but if your life is defined by sin, then your profession of faith is suspect and quite possible a lie. Now, John is not saying that we must be perfectly sinless. When he uses the phrase walking in darkness, the verb tense is present active, which indicates an ongoing action. This is a person who has never truly come to a knowledge of Christ. This is a person who has never truly repented of sin and begun to follow Jesus. He is not referring to a person who struggles with temptation and sin as a believer, but to a person whose life is defined by sin. This is a person who keeps on walking in the darkness, someone who is comfortably living in sin thinking that it has no impact on their spiritual condition. There is a major difference between a person whose life is controlled by sin and a person who is seeking to repent of and overcome temptations to sin.If we are not walking in the light, then we have no reason for believing that our sins are covered. There is no assurance of salvation while you continue to live under the dominion of sin. But, if we are trusting in Christ as the light of the world sent to free us from the darkness of sin and death, and if we are walking in the light as He is in the light then we should have confidence that we belong to Him and that our sins are covered by His precious blood. And when we stumble in sin, we can have confidence that if we confess our sins to Him that He will be faithful to forgive us and cleanse us.Your faith in Christ matters and so does your faithfulness to Christ. Some people might say that this doesn’t sound like good news, but it is. A gospel that is powerless to change your life is not a very powerful gospel. Grace that leaves you wallowing in sin is cheap grace. But the grace that truly saves is also a grace that changes us from sons of darkness to children of light.Next week we will continue our study of the gratitude that flows out of the grace of God. I hope that you will join me again next week as we look at Lord’s Day 33 and questions 88-91.Conclusion…If you want to learn more about Cornerstone Baptist church, you can find us online at Cornerstonewylie.org. Intro…Welcome to the Cornerstone Baptist church podcast. My name is Justin Wheeler, I am the preaching pastor for Cornerstone and today we are in week 26 of our journey through the Heidelberg Catechism. Today, I will be talking to you about questions 69-71.Transition…This week, we are following up on the topic that we introduced last week; the Holy Sacraments or Ordinances of the church. We discussed the ordinances in order to get a better understanding of what they are and the role they play in our lives as believers. Today, we are going to be looking at one of those ordinances specifically; the baptism of believers.Lord’s Day Focus...Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."For most of us this is a very familiar passage. It is what we call the Great Commission and in these few verses we get our marching orders as the church in the gospel age.Jesus tells us here, what we must not fail to do in our service to Him and for His kingdom. We could fail at many of the things that churches seek to accomplish today and it wouldn’t cause me to lose an hour of sleep; but if we fail to make disciples, that would be a different story, because making disciples is what Christ has commissioned us to do. Making disciples is the reason we are still here.In this passage there is one main verb and three participles that modify or reinforce the main action. The main verb is Make Disciples (imp) and it is not a suggestion, it is a command. Then you have Go, Baptizing and Teaching which are the participles. The way that we should read this text is to see the command to make disciples as the one that carries the most force. The participles help us to understand how we are going to make disciples.First, we “go” and this word could be translated “as you are going” because it is meant to encompass all of life. As we are going we are to be making disciples. Next, the manner in which we are to go about this task of making disciples is through Baptizing and Teaching. We are to baptize new disciples in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and we are to teach them all that Christ has commanded. This is our great task. This is what we are called to do. This is what we must seek to get right as a church. Our charge is to share the good news of Jesus Christ and to urge others to receive Christ and to become His disciple. This command of Christ should inform and undergird all of our interaction with one another and our interaction with unbelievers. We should take the task of evangelism seriously. We should take the responsibility of teaching and instructing disciples seriously. But this passage also helps us to understand that we should take baptism seriously? Baptism is an important part of the Great Commission and we shouldn’t ignore it, downplay it or fail to let the Scriptures inform us as to how we go about it.Now, I think it is important to point out that my view of baptism and the view that our church holds (CBC) is different than the view being promoted in this catechism. Heidelberg holds to a paedobaptist view of this ordinance, while we hold to a credobaptism view. But the differences between these two theological views will not be made plain until next week. This week, we are looking at the symbolism of baptism and trying to grasp what this sign means for believers in Christ.Question 69: How does baptism remind you and assure you that Christ’s one sacrifice on the cross is for you personally?Answer: In this way: Christ instituted this outward washing and with it gave the promise that, as surely as water washes away the dirt from the body, so certainly His blood and His Spirit wash away my soul’s impurity, in other words, all my sins.We already looked at the Great Commission to learn what Christ has commanded us to do and we learned that He wants us to baptize new disciples and then to teach them His truth. But how are we to baptize? To answer that question, we should no doubt be looking to the Scriptures. When we look at the type of baptisms administered by John the Baptist, Jesus, and Jesus disciples; we see a rather uniform pattern. Adults came to hear their message of Good News and upon believing that message, men and women were baptized to show their acceptance of the gospel and their desire to follow the teachings of Jesus as a disciple. The practice of baptism in the New Testament was carried out in one way; the person being baptized was immersed or put completely under the water and then brought back up again. From the baptism of Jesus by John on into the early church immersion was the mode of baptism employed. In fact, the word baptizo means to plunge or immerse something in water. And this is the most common meaning of the term both inside and outside the Bible (Grudem).[1]Not only does this word give us the picture of NT baptism by immersion but the text itself gives us this picture. When Jesus is baptized by John the text tells us that he came up out of the water and this is only necessary if he had been lowered down into it (Mark 1:10).John sought out a place in the Jordan River where there was much water because the mode of baptism was to immerse people in it. The text suggests that not only does the word mean immerse, but the early churched practiced immersion exclusively. The reason I am pointing this out is to draw attention to the symbolism that baptism is meant to convey. Being plunged beneath the water symbolizes our need to be washed clean of our sin, from head to toe. They didn’t simply need to wash their heads, or hands or even their feet; they needed to have their entire body washed clean from all of the sin that corrupts us.Question 70: What does it mean to be washed with Christ’s blood and Spirit?Answer: To be washed with Christ’s blood means that God, by grace, has forgiven my sins because of Christ’s blood poured out for me in His sacrifice on the cross. To be washed with Christ’s Spirit means that the Holy Spirit has renewed me and set me apart to be a member of Christ so that more and more I become dead to sin and increasingly live a holy and blameless life. When we think about being washed, the last thing that we would choose to wash ourselves with would be blood. In fact, most of us want nothing to do with blood, except to make sure ours stays inside our bodies. But in the bible blood has a pretty significant role.God designed a way for man’s sin to be forgiven in His sight and it required the blood of a lamb to be shed as a substitute for the person who needed forgiveness. The men would place his hands on the animal to signify a transfer of guilt. The animal would then be sacrificed, made to suffer the penalty that the man deserved. The blood of that animal would be gathered into a bowl and then poured out on the altar of God as a sign that God’s wrath had been paid in full. The blood was also sprinkled on the man to show that the transaction was complete. In this way, blood didn’t make them filthy, it actually made them clean. The same spiritual reality is true for those who believe in Jesus as their Savior and Lord. His blood atoned for our sin on the altar of God. His blood also covers us and makes us clean. Baptism is a sign that by our faith in Christ we have been washed clean in the eyes of God and have been set apart from the world to live for Jesus, in a holy and blameless life of faith.Question 71: Where does Christ promise that we are washed with His blood and Spirit as surely as we are washed with the water of baptism?Answer: In the institution of baptism where He says, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe is condemned.” This promise is repeated when Scripture calls baptism the washing of rebirth and the washing away of sins. The NT is full of passages teaching on baptism and making the connection that is addressed here in Heidelberg. Baptism is a sign of our having truly believed in Christ and it symbolizes our having been washed clean by His bloodMark 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.Titus 3:4 But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy SpiritActs 22:16 And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.Baptism is a beautiful display of the work of Christ in our lives. It is a sign and a seal of our union with Jesus. It serves as a joyful reminder of the spiritual reality of our new life in Him. It is a burden relieving picture that our sins have been washed away. But it is so much more.Next week we will continue our study of this ordinance and I hope that you will join me again next week as we look at Lord’s Day 27 and questions 72-74.Conclusion…If you want to learn more about Cornerstone Baptist church, you can find us online at Cornerstonewylie.org. One of the most frustrating things for me at the beginning of this whole game was that I didn't know what a market was... and there wasn't anybody who could really define it for me... SALES STRATEGY SHORTCUTS? Usually, I don't believe in shortcuts, but if you know your market, a lot of stuff just gets answered for you… and it’s much easier to pin down… Your Messaging What To Sell The Funnel You Should Build. Existing companies I work with like this a lot because it helps them position themselves in relation to their competition New people want this because it actually fills in a lot of the questions that get asked along the way. For Example: What should I sell? Who am I talking to? What kind of sales message should I create? Choosing the right market is one of the major things that help to shortcut the game for real. HERE’S THE PROBLEM… There are some things that it's obvious that I need to teach; I can see everyone's struggling with X, Y, and Z… However, there’s an area in my brain that I've NOT quite uncovered yet and I keep trying to reach to it. A few days ago, I woke up at five, 5:30 and spent three hours trying to figure out what question I should be asking… I believe that questions invite revelation; therefore, I must be careful of the questions that I ask. I always consider the questions and ask… and who I’m asking those questions to. For example: Am I asking broke people questions... or am I asking rich people questions? In fact, I have a whiteboard where I list out the major questions that I feel I should start asking. I'm NOT trying to answer them, I'm just logging that I have that question. Then when I get a little more clarity on what I need to be asking, I go to my bookshelves… I buy a lot of books. … and it's because I'm trying to create clarity on what question I'm hunting the answer for, so I don't get stuck in learning loops… I just hunt the answer. … and I've been hunting answers a lot lately. Half of what I do is teach people, “Hey, this is X, Y, and Z - I see a lot of people are struggling with this.” The other half of what I do is in a discovery realm that’s super fun mentally, but exhausting. And there's something that I’m trying to grasp, and I'm NOT quite there yet… HOW TO GET MORE CUSTOMERS I used to believe that in order to have success, you needed a good funnel. Now before anyone poops a brick, let me explain... Originally, I’d build a funnel and then I build an offer contingent with the funnel that I’d hacked... NOT based on what the customer needs... Then I’d build a sales message. Eventually, I realized that I needed to be doing the exact opposite… Instead, I need to create the… Sales Message Offer Funnel ...and I started teaching it that way. However, I quickly realized that wasn’t where I needed to start I was like, “Wait a second, I’ve gotta go even further back; way before the sales message and get to know the Red Ocean a little bit more.” ...and that's when I started creating my Red Ocean Analytics Checklist. It’s a living, breathing checklist of my actual findings; I'm not taking that from anywhere, it’s my stuff. Red Ocean Analytics, Baby! So before I’d create an offer, I'd go through the Red Ocean Checklist… But then I was like, “Crap, no! We can't start at the Red Ocean, we have to go back even further because there are other oceans and other markets…” There are ghost markets We have to think in terms of the customer … I have to go back even further. The further I've gone back, the more I see that when people just follow the framework, (and not even well), the chances of their success goes way up. The challenge is that I can tell that there's another stage before friggin' market selection that’s starting to pop out. But I can't tell yet if it's a pre-market selection or something that’s in it… Sometimes I feel like it's ‘The Beautiful Mind’ kind of thing, “Y'all here?” It's like schizophrenia, “Aah, pictures, patterns everywhere...” That's my unique ability. I'm not very good at many other things besides this. ART VERSUS SCIENCE It seems funny for me to say, (cause I'm the “offer guy’), but I'm at a spot now where I believe you can't even make a good offer until you know… The market you’re selecting The customer journey and where they've been previously. I can't sell something to a customer that they’ve already gone through - and that's what I mean by a ghost market. It's the ghost of “marketing past.’ The ghost of the ‘vehicle past’ that they've already gone through. It’s interesting to start looking at the journey the customer is on… You have to understand that piece… Market selection is still an art right now 'cause I'm still learning how to describe it as a science. I'm trying to pull the pattern out so that it's not an art. *I HATE ART* I'm NOT saying that “I hate actual art…” I'm saying, “I hate depending on art because art is hard to calculate.” I like science. I like patterns because I can say, “When I do A plus B, I get C.” I'm still learning to pull out the science piece of market selection. … and I've gotten a lot better at it. ACTS OF MARKETINGThe last OfferMind Masterclass was the clearest I'd ever taught about market selection. A lot of people have already created success with what I taught - that's why OfferMind is such a big deal. I'm not just teaching fluffy junk you’ve already heard. https://media.giphy.com/media/lwQjQawxKVrUc/giphy.gif So let’s talk about market selection… Market selection fuels acts of marketing Stick with me while I explain this… There's market selection and then there are acts of marketing. So what are the acts of marketing? I spent three hours going through all my books… I wrote down the question I'm trying to answer right now and I asked, “Could this book answer that question?” … just from face value and kinda flipping through, I’d literally throw books in different piles in the corner. I cleared out a bookshelf and labeled the shelves: Offers and Market Positioning Model, Scaling and Marketing Activities ..and those are the things that I'm deep diving into to answer the questions. What is a market? What are acts of marketing? ...'cause they’re NOT the same thing. This is where people get screwed when it comes to marketing. They say, “I'm gonna go do marketing, so I'm gonna go post stuff on Facebook…” To that, I say, “Grrgh, tell me some context otherwise, that's NOT marketing…” So what are acts of marketing? An act of marketing is things like: Creating A Sales Letter A Webinar A Launch Campaign An Evergreen Campaign Let me explain what I mean a little bit more… MARKETING DESIGN Let's say that you're gonna go do a launch campaign… You all just saw me do that with my OfferMind funnel, (we already have 200 seats sold, which is crazy). Let's talk about what market selection means… (Maybe I should call it marketing design? I don't know... it's actually a good way to describe it.) 'Cause we're all very familiar with this world, let’s take ClickFunnels as an example… Anyway, if you look at ClickFunnels… ClickFunnels is selling wealth. When they went straight to selling wealth, it didn't sell…. That's when ClickFunnels almost became an abandoned project. Russell had to try and figure out how to sell ClickFunnels to the right market …. that's a very natural thing for anything that you build. You're trying to learn how to sell it, right? Check this out… When ClickFunnels said, “We're not gonna sell the general wealth category, we're gonna sell to people who’re convinced that websites are the way to get wealth and become anti-Red in our messaging...” … that's when ClickFunnels became ‘ClickFunnels.’ ClickFunnels talked about the death of the website. ClickFunnels began to sell to the Red ocean of people who are convinced that building a website is what will give them wealth… How big is that market? It's friggin' huge, right! And when ClickFunnels became the anti-Red in their messaging… Who did it talk to? It talked to the sliver of people who were using the websites as the way to get wealth, but who weren't having success. These were the easiest people to sell to; you don't have to convince them there's a problem, because they already know there's a problem. Watch the way ClickFunnels grew from this… EXPANDING YOUR TARGET MARKET Eventually, someone would say: “Well I'm in affiliate marketing, could this work for me?” Well, of course, it could... so we'd be like, “Let’s add affiliate marketing to the pot,’ and then that would become part of the expansion... … and that's one of the ways to grow. Russell didn’t try to sell EVERYBODY, he sold to people who were in affiliate marketing and already experiencing pain… That's very different to somebody who says,”Yeah, I'm interested,” but they never pull out their wallet. These people are: Problem-Aware Solution-Aware Buyers In the middle of pain They're not having all the success they want. This is a HUGE deal to understand. Then after we’d added the dissatisfied affiliate marketers to the ClickFunnels customer base, we went to… B2B Retail ...'cause they were also asking, “Can this work for me?” We used the same strategy and sliver by sliver, we grew the ClickFunnels customer base. And what's fascinating to understand is that it’s a mistake to try to target tons of markets at once. You have to have one market that acts like a big ol' anchor… Anti-Website positioning is one of the major anchors for ClickFunnels. And this is the reason why most people fail, (right at the get-go), before they even get to: The sales message How do I write a sales letter? How do I come up with the funnel? What's my launch campaign? One of the BIGGEST reasons why they fail is because they don't know what market they're selling to... *You're selling to the Red Ocean* WHERE TO FIND YOUR TARGET MARKET If I wake up one day and I say, “Hey, I'm gonna go sell my stuff,” and I put my stuff in a little cart, where am I gonna push my cart to? ANSWER: To where everybody else already is. I’m gonna go to where there are people, i.e., the Red Ocean. The Blue Oceans don't exist by definition, they're not there. It takes a long time to grow an actual Blue Ocean. So then, acts of marketing are things that you do in *that* market… Does that make sense? COMPLEMENTARY NOT COMPETITIVE I know who my market is... for me, it's ClickFunnels. However, I'm not anti-ClickFunnels in my messaging: That'd be *STUPID* I'm a diehard You peel back that heart you're gonna see gears and the ClickFunnels' logo tattooed there. I'm the offer guy, and if you want success with ClickFunnels, you should probably learn how to build an offer, right? That's how I’ve positioned myself… I'm complimentary, NOT competitive ...this is very key. So for market selection a.k.a market design - (that's really what I call this piece)... First of all, you identify the market and you somehow position yourself to become either the… Companion to… Anti of... … you need to figure out which you want. This is all stuff I’ve discovered on my journey PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER There are not a lot of books out there on this subject, and that's why I'm writing a book. That's also why I have almost an entire bookshelf full of books around this subject, I’ve had to piece it together. There are a few books that have gotten close or really helped close a few gaps. But most marketing books out there have been written, how my marketing degree was created - for corporate and big massive analysts. I didn’t learn any kind of direct response marketing material in college. That's not what you learn in a marketing degree… I didn’t know that. What you learn in a marketing degree is marketing analytics. You learn a lot of quantitative marketing research, (I hated that class), and qualitative marketing research. I learned a lot of market research, but nothing that I actually use now… So most of the material that's out there is about that. There's NOT a lot of material out there that is about direct response marketers or specifically about offer creation like I talk about. What I'm talking about is very much stuff I've discovered while I've been en route. That’s a lot of what OfferMind was about last year: How do you know that the market your selling into? How should you choose a mature market? Just think about it… I'm over here positioning… Myself My messaging My sales letters My product Everything is in relation to the market that I’ve chosen... and if that market leaves, I’ve lost my business. That's why a lot of people fail… They build a product with no thought on the market that they’re selling into and where they go to market… ...and so they just friggin' wander the village and trying to follow the veins of gold… In my honest opinion, that's very dangerous, and it's one of the reasons why people fail! The offer, the sales letter, the funnel… all that crap gets waaay easy when you understand this... MY MARKET I am in wealth and my market is the ClickFunnels market. I've helped a lot of people make a million dollars. I’ve helped a lot of people make hundreds of thousands... and thousands of people have made their first money online, (or offline), EVER. There were a few signals that told me that ClickFunnels is a mature enough market to sell into. I'm selling into the ClickFunnels space, but I’ve positioned myself as an accelerant to the vehicle. ...and I've done that on purpose and a lot of design, (and I told Russell that)... I was in his office probably like two or three months ago, and I said: “Hey, You're not just the CEO and CMO of an insanely massive and very valuable SaaS software company that’s explosive and almost worth a billion dollars…” ( It definitely will be at some time, you know what I mean! It's amazing.) “ … AND you're also running a massive coaching program. My goal is to take the burden off of you in terms of ‘nerd out coachingism’.” And he's like, “Oh cool, sounds good.” That's why… that's how I positioned myself in the way I have... I'm an accelerant to the vehicle. I'm not the anti-Red, that'd be dumb. I love ClickFunnels, you all know that. (I think it's crazy when someone doesn’t I have a ClickFunnels trial. You can get a trial at freecftrial.com.) MARKET DESIGN NOT BRANDING Usually, when I say ‘market design’ most people think logos: “No, no, no, bad! That's branding.” Branding comes second ... and when I say branding comes second, I mean it comes at no. 5,000 down the line... Branding means absolutely zero in terms of how money is already flowing... I’m like,” Hey ClickFunnels people: Would you like to learn how to use ClickFunnels from a guy that was the lead ClickFunnels builder at ClickFunnels? Would you like to learn from the guy who gets outsourced huge amounts of the coaching for what they're selling? That's a pretty powerful position. If someone's like, “Well Stephen, I can't be successful like you 'cause I don't have status.” Yeah, you're friggin' right! It's powerful. Go earn your own path. I got a few people with poopy-pants syndrome who reach out to me like, “Stephen, but I can't do that...” Well, you're right… You haven't worked your face off for the last six years with obsessive sacrifice to figure it out. ...but you've probably done something that I haven't, and if you haven't, it's time to cut out some things in your life... Alright… ;-) So there is market selection and then there are acts of marketing. Market selection = which market is naturally akin to the thing that I'm going to sell. Acts of marketing = what most people think marketing is. Acts of marketing are… Let's go create: A Sales letter A Sales Message Different Kinds of Campaigns. Most people NEVER do any market selection, and that’s why they're NOT making money… (and that's a lot of what OfferMind teaches). Until Next Time: Make Money, Do Good! BOOM! If you're just starting out you're probably studying a lot. That's good. You're probably geeking out on all the strategies, right? That's also good. But the hardest part is figuring out what the market wants to buy and how you should sell it to them, right? That's what I struggled with for a while until I learned the formula. So I created a special Mastermind called an OfferMind to get you on track with the right offer, and more importantly the right sales script to get it off the ground and sell it. Wanna come? There are small groups on purpose, so I can answer your direct questions in person for two straight days. You can hold your spot by going to OfferMind.com.
Spartans, here’s a riddle for you: What do lengthy financial reports and food labels have in common? Answer? To some, they might seem a bit boring and overly detailed, but they’re both really important. In this podcast, you’ll learn about some of the key ways to read a food label so you can quickly zero-in on the most relevant information impacting your health If you only had access to one piece of information in a food label, what would it be? That would be “serving size.” Food companies know that many consumers are calorie-conscious, so one way to minimize the caloric “profile,” if you will, of their products is to describe calories per portion and not per package. Be careful to check the serving size. It might be less than you imagine. Just look at the sample portion sizes most nutritionists show their patients … they’re much smaller than what Americans typically eat. Knowing this, check the calories per serving. If a package contains “four servings” and you eat the whole package, that’s 4 times the number of calories (and sugars, and carbs, etc etc) than is listed on the package. That’s a lot! Luckily, there is more information to be gleaned from food labels and packaging. A lot of it is in shorthand, so you should know exactly what they mean. First, there are different ways to designate a food as having fewer calories than one might normally encounter or expect. In descending order, they are: “Reduced.” This means that the product has at least 25% fewer calories (or a specified nutrient) than the ordinary product. “Low calorie” is used to designate 40 calories or less per serving “Calorie free” means having less than 5 calories per serving … there also the related terms “fat free” or “sugar free,” which mean ½ gram of sugar or fat in a serving For “low cholesterol,” you’ll find 20 milligrams or less of saturated fat per serving “Low sodium” has 140 mg or less of sodium “High in” designates an item having 20% or more of the “Daily Value” of a certain nutrient or vitamin per serving … and in between the “highs” and “lows,” you’ll find the term “Good source of,” which means the product provides at least 10-19% of the “Daily Value” of a certain nutrient or vitamin per serving There’s a lot of details to remember – too many, it seems, to bother looking at when you’re rushing home from the supermarket to feed your kids, complete chores, pay bills, head for a workout for instance. Instead, pick a quiet moment or two at home when you’re not in a hurry and do some light reading. Choose a few items like cereal, granola bars, or a treat like ice cream and flip through the food labels you see. Read carefully and you’ll learn what to look for when you’re making important choices for your health. Lord’s Day #16Intro…Welcome to the Cornerstone Baptist church podcast. My name is Justin Wheeler, I am the preaching pastor for Cornerstone and today we are in week 16 of our journey through the Heidelberg Catechism and I will be talking to you today about questions 40-44.Transition…Today, we are talking about death and Hell. Particularly, we will be talking about Jesus’ death and whether or not he actually descended to “Hell.” Over the last 15 weeks of working through this Catechism, I have received more questions about this topic than any other. The Apostle’s Creed contains a phrase that is more than a little strange when you think about it.Here’s the phrase in question…I believe…in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; (here it comes) He descended into Hades; the third day He rose from the dead; Now, you may already know this, but that little phrase, “He Descended into Hades (or Hell in some versions),” is the most contested line in the creed. What does it mean? It is true? Should we just leave it out or is there a way to understand this phrase that is helpful to Christians today? We will discuss that in a minute. But for now, let’s get started this week by looking at question #40.Lord’s Day Focus...Question 40: Why was it necessary for Christ to suffer death?Answer: Because, by reason of the justice and truth of God, satisfaction for our sins could be made no other way than by the death of the Son of God.The first few questions this week are fairly easy for us to answer and understand as they make plain what Christ accomplished for us when He died. Question 40 is asking why did our Messiah have to die? What was the point of it all and what did His death accomplish?Jesus death was necessary because He had come to save us from our sins and the proper payment for sin is death. “For the wages of sin is death…(Rom 6:23).” But this goes back even further in Scripture, all the way back to Genesis 2. When God gave Adam the instruction about not eating the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, He issued a warning that if they did eat from its fruit they would surely die.Death is the just penalty for sinning against the law and commands of God. So, why was it necessary for Christ to suffer death? Because God’s justice demands it. In order for Christ to save us from our sin, He had to die for our sin, and that is what He did.Question 41: Why was He buried?Answer: To show thereby that He was really dead. This is perhaps the easiest question we will answer this week as it simply makes sense. A person is buried to show that they are dead, truly dead. Over the years, there have been some theories floating around among other religious groups that Jesus didn’t actually die. Some claim that He simply passed out and then later revived in the tomb and pushed His way out.Even in the NT, there is evidence of early Jewish stories aimed to deny that Jesus died. You can read about this in Matthew 28:11-15. But the simple reality is that Jesus was buried because He actually died. Here’s what the gospel of Mark says about it…Mk 15:42 And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died. And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. 45 And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. 46 And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.Question 42: Since then Christ died for us, why must we also die?Answer: Our death does not pay the price for our sins. Rather, it puts an end to our sinning and is our entrance into eternal life. This is a great question, but again there is plenty of Scripture at our disposal to help us answer this. Death is our entrance into eternal life. In 2 Corinthians 5:6-8, Paul says, “We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord…and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.”Christ died in our place to pay the price for our sins, which means that our death is not paying the debt we owe to God. But death is necessary as it frees us from this world and allows us to enter into the eternal life that Jesus has purchased for us. But the catechism also points out that death is something to celebrate as it puts an end to our sinning. As I grow older in my faith, and hopefully more mature and closer to Jesus, I have a deepening sense of my own sin. I see sinful impulses in my heart that I am ready to be freed from. I battle temptations that I would rather not have to battle. My flesh is weak and death will put an end to my struggle with sin and temptation.Question 43: What further benefit do we receive from the sacrifice and death of Christ on the cross?Answer: Through Christ’s death our old selves are crucified, put to death and buried with Him, so that the evil desires of the flesh may no longer rule us, but that instead we may dedicate ourselves as an offering of gratitude to Him.This question and answer seem to have been pulled completely from Paul’s logic in the book of Romans.Rom 6:6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him.And then more from Romans 12…12 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.By faith, we are united with Christ in ways that we need God to reveal to us and that is exactly what Paul is doing in Romans. God is revealing to us, through Paul, the amazing connections that we need to draw from our relationship to Jesus. Not only have we trusted in Jesus but we have been united with Jesus in a death like His, in a freedom from sin, in a resurrection like His.Therefore, understanding the awesome truth of how Jesus’ death has been applied to our souls and life, we should be all the more desirous to live the rest of our lives on earth as a living sacrficie of praise to Him.But finally, let’s look at question 44.Question 44: Why does the Creed add, “He descended to Hades?”Answer: That in my greatest temptations I may be assured that Christ, my Lord, by His inexpressible anguish, pains, and terrors which He suffered in His soul on the cross and before, has redeemed me from the anguish and torment of Hell.To make sense out of this question let’s talk about some history. The phrase “descended into hell” doesn’t’ appear to have been part of the earliest form of this creed. It occurs in only one version of the Creed prior to AD 650 and in that version the phrase was understood to mean that Jesus “descended into the grave.”Personally, I think this is the best way to understand the phrase, but there is still a small problem and it has to do with the fact that the phrase just before it says that Jesus was “crucified, dead and buried.” So why would the Creed state that Jesus was buried and then add another phrase to say that same thing by pointing out that He also descended into the grave. I assume that you can see the dilemma. But what is so bad about Jesus going into Hell? For starters, Hell is a place of punishment for sin and the NT understands that Jesus’ endured the punishment for our sins on the Cross. Since hell is a place of punishment this would mean that Christ’s death on the cross was not enough and that he thereafter needed to descend into Hell to finish the job. This idea doesn’t hold up to the rest of the NT teaching. In fact, John Piper has argued,“There is no textual basis in the New Testament for claiming that between Good Friday and Easter Christ was preaching to souls imprisoned in hell or Hades.”[1]Piper goes on to argue that the church today should omit the phrase “descended into hell” because it causes too much confusion and it is not supported by the rest of the NT. But others, including John Calvin, have said that there is a way that we can understand this phrase so that it helps us.Calvin would have us understand this phrase not in the sense that Jesus entered Hell in reality but that He entered it spiritually. Not only did Jesus endure the physical pain and suffering on the cross, but he also endured the pain and torment of separation from His Father.Calvin writes, “Surely no more terrible abyss can be conceived than to feel yourself forsaken and estranged from God; and when you call upon him not to be heard.” This can be a comfort to us because it tells us there is no hellish experience that we can have in this life where Christ cannot identify with us and offer us comfort as one who has made it through to the other side.In other words, you can read this phrase and understand that Jesus’ death on the cross was more than physical, it was spiritual. When you remember this fact it can comfort you in your spiritual trials, knowing that you are loved and kept by the One who has faced something even worse. Thanks for joining me today as I discuss the Heidelberg Catechism. I hope you’ll join me again next week as we look at Lord’s Day 17 together and discuss question 45.Conclusion…If you want to learn more about Cornerstone Baptist church, you can find us online at Cornerstonewylie.org. Listener’s Question: “What is your advice on procrastination? When I work out my mind tells me that it is bored, you don’t feel good, do this later, do something else more important now and all the self-help talk won’t help me. This habit also affects other areas of my life. I start a lot of things and complete about 70%-80% of the work, then I quit. I realize I have a problem moving from beginner level to intermediate level or to make things into a habit because I always look for the next things or worry about what people think of me. Psychologically, I do things to impress people even when people not in my life and I have a hard time letting go and accepting myself.” Answer: To be honest, when I first got into the fitness industry I was in love with it but after a few years and hitting a ceiling that I didn’t know how to get beyond, I started partying and going back to old bad habits. I knew I needed to do something, I was disorganized and unprofessional. I knew I had to work on the business part to get to the next level but I would constantly put off studying business although I knew it was important. A lot of us can relate to that. We start things and then quit or we don’t start at all. To beat procrastination and ultimately become your best self here are 7 Powerful Ways to End Procrastination Today: Write down your goals and give yourself a deadline Break your goals into small pieces and focus on the slight edge principle Visualize the future you want Use fear to motivate you Build accountability Reward your progress Build a habit of taking action I also recommend that anyone dealing with procrastination read, The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. Intro Hi and Welcome to Books Between - a podcast to help teachers, parents, or librarians connect kids between 8-12 to books they’ll love. I’m your host, Corrina Allen - a 5th teacher, a parent, and after taking the new Pottermore quiz, I discovered that my Patronus is a…..hedgehog. WHAT? I was totally expecting something mighty and fierce like a panther or an eagle! But - a hedgehog? I guess it could be worse - it could have been a salmon. This is Episode #7 and today we’re discussing Tips & Resources for talking about the Presidential Election, three election themed books, and I’ll answer a question about picture books for middle grade students. Main Topic - Tips & Resources for Discussing the U.S. Presidential Election So, in case you haven’t noticed, we here in the United States are in the midst of rather lengthy presidential election season. And even my international friends are following this election with much interest. This will be my twelfth full year teaching so the 3rd presidential election that I’ve experienced with students. And I have never seen kids so…. passionate about the two main candidates: Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Even last spring when it was still the primaries, my 5th graders wanted to talk about it. The emotional intensity toward these two candidates are sometimes tricky to navigate in the classroom and in your own home. If you are planning lessons or some reading around the elections and candidates this fall, here are some resources and some thoughts about how to guide those conversations which seem to be uniquely charged this election. We’ll discuss why you should consider talking about the election with children, some tips on how to make those discussions go more smoothly, and then finally some print and online resources to anchor those conversations. Why talking about the presidential election is important. First let’s talk about why discussing the presidential election is even necessary. So maybe you’re thinking - why even go there? Politics is always cited as one of those topics that you really shouldn’t bring up in polite conversation. In my view, we have an obligation as parents, teachers, and citizens to make sure our children are as informed as possible about the system of government in their country. Not only do we owe them that knowledge, but honestly it’s in our own self-interest. I don’t know about you, but I want a well-informed public in charge of the society that I’ll grow old in. One that knows at least the basics of the electoral system and has had a little experience researching candidates and examining claims made by campaigns. Also, those skills are transferable to lots of other arenas in kids’ lives way beyond what happens in school. And honestly, you can’t assume they are getting the information anywhere else. In the U.S., presidential elections are only once every 4 years so harness that excitement while you can. And boy is there excitement this year! Tips for Political Discussions So now for a few tips about how to handle those discussions in your class or library or even at home. Even under the best circumstances, talking politics with one person can seem like a minefield. So attempting to channel the conversation of 20+ kids with widely differing viewpoints and backgrounds can be challenging. My first suggestion is try focusing the discussion more on issues rather than personalities. So, start the conversation more broadly. For example, you might ask “What a makes a good leader?” rather than “Do you like Clinton or Trump?” so they can hopefully express views that are grounded in what they truly value and think beyond preconceived ideas. A second suggestion is to set some ground rules about how to debate a topic without getting nasty. And then, practice with a less emotional topic first, like what animal makes a good pet or best pizza toppings. A third suggestion is to include the third party candidates in your discussions so that it doesn’t turn into such an “us” vs. “them” but acknowledges other voices and viewpoints. And the fact that there is a lot less coverage of Jill Stein or Gary Johnson or the dozens of other presidential candidates is a lesson in and of itself. And a final thought - try try try not to reveal who you are voting for or telegraph that information through your tone or body language. Mainly because it doesn’t matter what WE think. It’s been said before, but it’s worth repeating - It is more important to teach children HOW to think rather than WHAT to think. Also, we should model open-mindedness and a willingness to change our point of view when we learn new information. And especially don’t bash a candidate (as much as you may need to bite your tongue). As a parent, I would be upset if a teacher was doing that in my child’s class, and I want to make sure that every kid feels welcomed in class and that we have an environment where we can examine issues and disagree without being disagreeable to each other. Because this election will end, but these children will have to work together for many more years. Resources On to some presidential election resources for you! I am going to say up front at as far as books go - there isn’t much on the middle grade level for Donald Trump. I have been hunting and searching all summer, pestering all the librarians I know, and the only kid focused Trump book I found turned out to be a spoof book! So, I’m really glad I realized that before buying it. However, there are some workarounds for you. First, let’s talk about books. For Hillary Clinton, there is the new biography in the “Who Was” series titled Who is Hillary Clinton?. I’ll be talking more about that in our Book Talk segment later. For students wanting something more in depth, there’s a new middle grade / YA biography called Hillary Rodham Clinton: Do All the Good You Can by Cynthia Levinson. That was just released this summer. There are also a couple picture books worth checking out like Hillary Rodham Clinton: Some Girls are Born to Lead by Michelle Markel. An interesting side note about that book. Almost every single one of the 104 reviews on Amazon for that book are either 5 stars OR 1 star. Interesting. There is no middle ground there. For Donald Trump, one way to work around the lack of middle grade biographies available is to provide excerpts of the adult biographies. So there’s his famous The Art of the Deal and the newly released autobiography, Great Again, which would contain more up-to-date information for students. Obviously, you will need to read those chapters yourself first to make sure the content is okay for kids. Of course, instead of focusing on the candidates, you could focus on the election process with books like Honest Abe’s Guide to Presidential Elections. Or you could focus on presidential history with a book like National Geographic’s Our Country’s Presidents or Presidential Pets by Julia Moberg. Or, maybe you could focus on some fun reads like Bad Kitty for President, Dan Gutman’s The Kid Who Ran for President or a huge favorite of mine The Tapper Twins Run for President. (More on that one later in the Book Talk segment.) Biographies are just one avenue for learning about elections and current candidates. Scholastic has Election Skills Books for various grade levels. And I’ve ordered the Grade 4-6 version for my class. They also have lots of activities right on their website - linked right in the show notes for you. PBS also has a really great website called Election Central 2016 with video and other resources to help you examine the elections. I did notice that the PBS website is geared for grades 6 and up. And finally, Newsela has a Students Vote 2016 Teacher Guide where you can find articles. And the great thing about Newsela is that you can adjust the reading level of the articles so everyone gets the same content but at a level comfortable for them to absorb the information. I am really excited about harnessing my students’ energy and enthusiasm this year to help us all learn something new. Book Talk - Three Election Themed Books In this part of the show, I share with you a few books centered around a theme and discuss three things to love about each book. This week, we have three election themed books: the picture book When Penny Met Potus, the biography Who is Hillary Clinton? and the novel The Tapper Twins Run for President. When Penny Met POTUS When Penny Met POTUS is a picture book with words by Rachel Ruiz and illustrations by Melissa Manwill. It is a cleverly constructed story about a young girl, Penny, whose mother works in the White House. And Penny is super excited because today she gets to go to work with her mom, and try to find a way to meet this mysterious POTUS. She imagines him as a friendly suit-wearing monster and practices what she’s going to say and do when they meet until finally in her wandering through the White House, she comes face-to-face with POTUS. And the ending is so cute and clever - I’ll leave it for you and your kids to discover together. But, here are three great things that I can say about When Penny Met POTUS: The real-life basis of the illustrations. While Penny is searching in the White House, she imagines meeting POTUS in his own airplane, having a tea party together, and helping him solve the world’s problems. And in each case, the drawings are accurate. From the paint on Air Force One to the inset cabinets of the China Room where they have tea, to the famous intricate carvings of the desk in the Oval Office, it’s all authentic. The only detail I couldn’t quite confirm was the fish tank. How the author and illustrator worked together to really show you how kids can sometimes fill in the gaps of their knowledge with the most imaginative things. You and I who work with kids a lot or have children of our own, know how those misunderstandings over figurative language or in this case definitions of acronyms can lead to some pretty hilarious results. The ice cream at the end. I know it’s a small moment but I just loved that final page when Penny and POTUS are together and you catch a glimpse of this fully stocked freezer that is top to bottom packed with an awe-inspiring assortment of ice cream. I am a huge ice cream fanatic so if that’s what a White House visit is like, count me in! Who is Hillary Clinton? A second election themed middle grade biography is Who is Hillary Clinton? by Heather Alexander. This is a new release in this really popular series and it just came out on August 2nd. It starts off with Clinton’s dream at age 13 of some day becoming an astronaut. She writes a letter to NASA and they flat out tell her, “We’re not interested in women astronauts.” From that formative experience, the biography steps back in time and covers her birth, her difficult family life as a child, her education and social justice work, and her tough political experiences as First Lady and then later Senator and Secretary of State. This biography goes all the way up to her winning the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States. Here are three things that my students and I loved about Who is Hillary Clinton?: How the same format of this series makes them all easy to read. You already know the layout and text features before starting. As a teacher, I truly appreciate non-fiction series like that and as a reader, I feel like I can absorb more of the info since my mind isn’t working on the side to decipher the organization of the text. For example, all the chapter titles are between two thin horizontal lines. In the back, there’s always a one page vertical timeline of the person’s life right next to a one page vertical world timeline so you can place their life events in context. All of the illustrations are black and white sketches - and no photographs. It’s not too long. It’s a slim book and when you pick it up, you don’t feel like it’s going to be a major time investment. I think most children could read this book in a few hours. And if they are inspired to know even more, there’s a great bibliography in the back. Even though it’s a short biography, Who is Hillary Clinton? is packed with great information for students. I especially like the side articles about the Equal Rights Amendment, Political Parties, and previous Women Who Ran for President. So not only are we learning about Hillary Rodham Clinton, we are also getting lots of other great history as well. The Tapper Twins Run for President And finally - The Tapper Twins Run for President! I think this one might be my favorite of the three - it just SO FUN to read! So, this novel is Geoff Rodkey’s third book in the series and was released a couple weeks ago. But you don’t have to have read the other two to really enjoy this one. And - I don’t know how he did it, but somehow this books touches on many of the same notes that the current Clinton/Trump election is hitting. It’s uncanny! If you’re not familiar with the series, essentially it’s about 6th grade twins Claudia and Reese, who are very different from each other. Claudia is studious, intensely focused, and has been building her school political career since Kindergarten to run for 6th grade class president. (Qualities not unlike Clinton.) Then there’s Reese - popular, soccer jock, no political experience at all, and insanely competitive. (Qualities not totally unlike Trump.) So when Claudia and Reese get into an argument about playing soccer on the roof of the school, Claudia says, “If you don’t like the way I’m representing you as president, there’s an election coming up.” Meaning - you should vote for someone else. Well, Reese, viewing things in a competitive way, took that as a throw down to run for president himself. And things get hilariously crazy from there. Here are three things I just loved about The Tapper Twins Run for President: Side Characters: There’s Ashley, their incompetent baby-sitter who is always on her phone. Then their well-meaning but sometimes frazzled parents who send these frantic and funny text messages back and forth to each other. And my favorite - Xander Billington. As Claudia says, he’s from a “very-old, very-rich, and very brain-dead family” that came over on the Mayflower. And he talks likes he’s in a rap battle. If you ever seen the TV show Parks & Rec, just picture (and hear) Jean Ralphio. That’s Xander and he’s Reese’s running mate. It is wonderfully hilarious! You actually learn a lot about political campaigns in this book. But - not in an educational and didactic kind of way. It’s always primarily about fun. So for example, when talking about the difference between a democracy and a dictatorship, Claudia says, “Two good examples of dictatorships are North Korea and our apartment.” Reese also gets a campaign manager and tries to stay on message. The two sides work out the details of a debate - which goes horribly wrong. Claudia and Reese are each trying to get the media to write about them in a favorable way and convince voters to show up on election day. It’s really clever and well crafted. Illustrations & Drawings: This is what made me fall in love with this series - the realism and the variety of the pictures. There are screenshots of chat logs when they play MetaWorld (a Minecraft-like game where some of the events happen) and pictures of hand-drawn campaign posters. My favorite photographs though are the ones of real locations in New York City. So there is a picture of the Shake Shack and the Hot and Crusty pizza joint on 86th street where the twins have campaign meetings. Photographs of the back seats of the M79 bus and a yogurt shop called 16 Handles. This series makes me want to take a Tapper Twins inspired road trip to New York City. So if your students or children like this book, the second book, The Tapper Twins Tear Up New York is all about a scavenger hunt gone wrong through the streets of New York City. It is fabulous! So those are three different styles of book that you could include in your election themed discussions or displays in your class, home, or library. Q & A Our last segment of the show is Question & Answer time. Question: A few conversations that I’ve had lately in real life and on Twitter have essentially boiled down to this question: “What about picture books for middle grade readers?” Answer: To answer that quickly - YES! Please don’t dis the picture books when recommending titles to your tween children and students. And when you are selecting read alouds for home, school, or library, make sure you’ve got some great picture book options. I’ll admit that my classroom library is weak in that area but I’ve been inspired to improve. And I think in the future, I’ll do a longer segment about picture books because I’ve been learning a lot lately that I’d like to share with you. But a couple quick points: Older kids still love them! They are great reads for smaller time slots or in between longer books. Older readers bring a more sophisticated eye that notices more than if they had read that same book even a couple years ago. In a shorter amount of time, you can expose them to a huge variety of genres, plots, characters, and themes for them to build their background and later connect those ideas to their other reading. So, definitely don’t skip the picture book section the next time you are at your library or bookstore. Closing Okay - that wraps up our Q&A section this week. If you have a question about how to connect children between 8-12 to books they’ll love or some thoughts about why we should all still read picture books, I would really love to hear from you.
