There is a lot of talk about how creativity and collaboration "should" be done these days. Some say processes are stifling. Others say you have to all be in the same office to collaborate effectively. Today's conversation will offer you a different take on how collaboration can actually lead to the most creative solutions on the planet.Today, I speak with Laetro co-founder and firmer Disney creative, Dave Zaboski! We talk about what Disney taught him about effective collaboration, including the idea of "plussing" to ensure the best outcome. He candidly shares how process and structure don't stifle creativity but ensure it's repeatable, and actually helps creatives get good work out into the world. We talk about the unique position we are in as humans to tell stories, the role mission plays in mobilizing a team, and how empathy is required by artists. Dave also gives his take on AI and creative technology and where the dangers and opportunities lie.To access the episode transcript, please click on the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.com Key Takeaways:Solutions can and should be beautiful. Beauty is created when you add to others, not when you are negative to them. Empathy in creativity allows bridges to be built and connections to be made between different experiences of different people. Storytelling is a power - stories create our reality. What would happen if we stop telling the apocalypse stories, and start to use the technology in the stories to enable society to flourish. There is process and structure, even in creativity. It is not a bad thing, it is a way to get replicable results no matter what industry you are in. Rules are necessary for creativity to flourish. #180 Second City's Kelly Leonard | Improv & The Power of "Yes And"

Improv isn't just for comedy. If there are superfoods like blueberries that are good for your health, improv may just be a super-skill that has implications and applications that are also good for your health. No joke. And the skills are highly learnable and can measurably help you become a better person. They can make you a better collaborator in marriage, parenthood, business, and just about everywhere in life. Many Fortune 500 companies, including Clorox, have been able to boost their bottom line by using the skills they've implemented from improv. I had the pleasure of speaking with Kelly Leonard (https://www.secondcity.com/people/kelly-leonard+), the Vice President of Creative Strategy, Innovation and Business Development of Second City in Chicago, the oldest continually operating improv center in the world. The list of graduates who have come from Second City is utterly astounding. If you are a fan of any of these people, you can thank Second City: Amy Poehler, Mike Myers, Chris Farley, Tina Fey, Tim Meadows, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, Joan Rivers, Jordan Peele, Alan Alda, John Belushi, Stephen Colbert, Cecily Strong, and so many others. All of them developed their chops under the same roof, where my guest has worked for 35 years. Kelly is the author of an excellent book on improv called, Yes, And: How Improvisation Reverses "No, but" Thinking and Improves Creativity and Collaboration - Lessons from the Second City. I loved this book and so did a fella by the name of Stephen Colbert who said the book, “…is for anyone looking to be more creative in their work and in their life.” Other similar praise came from Dan Pink and Vanity Fair. In this episode, you will hear how improv works, and why you should consider developing these skills. You may even find yourself bringing people like Kelly to your workplace to help improve performance and employee morale through the types of play that only improv can bring. So, listen in as Kelly and I talk about why you need to learn improv, the super-skill in life.

Keynote speaker, published author, zen student, innovator-in-residence, and facilitator — Sunni Brown has a whole village's worth of knowledge, but, somehow, contains it all within just one conscientious and clever human.Sunni's fingerprints can be found on many resources and THINGS you'll be familiar with as a facilitator: Gamestorming, The Doodle Revolution, and Deep Self Design.Safe to say, Sunni is well-placed to discuss the finer details of collaboration — and to highlight some of the ways we might learn about it more deeply from unexpected sources. Explore the art of zen and facilitation, how to get out of our own way, and why a dispassionate facilitator can be more helpful to a group than an overly committed one.Find out about:What Sunni has learned about facilitation since becoming a student of ZenHow our work might change if collaboration was seen as a skill, rather than an outcomeHow to help a group walk the thin line of doable discomfortWhy a saviour complex is a fatal flaw for facilitators — and how to avoid itWhy you can recover from poor workshop design, but not poor trust-buildingHow to take responsibility for our emotional responses, so we can remain in service to the groupWhy facilitators see big changes when they stop taking resistance personallyDon't miss the next episode: subscribe to the show with your favourite podcast player. And download the free 1-page summary, so you can always have the key points of this episode to hand.LinksWatch the video recording of this episode on YouTube.Connect to Sunni:On LinkedInOn InstagramOn TwitterSupport the showCheck out the podcast map to see the overview of all podcast episodes: https://workshops.work/podcast-map

Improv Skills That Will Enhance Your D&D Game - The Second City Method

The Dungeon Crawl

Improvisation or Improv and D&D are often referred to each other in the same sentence. I have even discussed the common phrase of “Yes, And” many different times on this podcast, but have never delved into much detail on what exactly that entails. D&D at it's core is an Improv based game, there isn't a script, there isn't a set path (in good games), and you and your group are constantly creating on the fly. So if we're going to be playing an Improv game then we should learn Improv skills and elements that will make our games even better. Insert the wonderful book by Kelly Leonard and Tom Yorton from the world renowned comedy theatre The Second City in Chicago. This book takes the skills they have used and taught in The Second City for decades and repurposes them to be used in different settings instead of just on a stage. Reading through this book gave me a lot of insight into ways to enhance my own D&D game and experience, but also how to be a better member in groups. So let's discuss how we can utilize these Improv skills to enhance your D&D game, and TTRPG experience. Book mentioned - Yes, And: How Improvisation Reverses "No, But" Thinking and Improves Creativity and Collaboration--Lessons from The Second City by Kelly Leonard and Tom Yorton : https://www.amazon.com/Yes-Improvisation-Reverses-Creativity-Collaboration-Lessons/dp/0062248545Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/dungeoncrawlnetworkLinks & Discord - https://linktr.ee/dungeoncrawlpod     Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comAdditional sound effects obtained from https://www.audioblocks.com/and SynrinscapeMusic from https://filmmusic.io"Unseen Horrors" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)Support the show

Laura's multipotentialite mother inspired so much in her life: a love of learning, culture, language, and academic achievement. But a few years into her PhD in Victorian literature, Laura doubted that a tenured professorship was within reach. Or that it was the lifestyle she wanted. Thanks to intensive soul-searching and working with a coach, she gained clarity into potential careers, finished her dissertation earlier than the bulk of her cohort, and began her transition to marketing.Between working for a small nonprofit, a large professional services firm, and a few other employers, Laura has become a well-regarded content marketing strategist and ghostwriter for executives. When the pandemic hit, Laura struck out on her own for more flexibility, including time to augment her daughters' online learning. Laura's future includes big plans for building a content marketing agency, working abroad for five or six years in Europe, and writing a novel. So far in our Life in the And journey, we've explored the ANDs in our minds and lives. We've discussed how we can use the paradoxes that reside within us to transcend uncertainty and doubt. But what if we also use ANDs not just as individuals but as communities, societies, and nations? As time goes by, it becomes more apparent how we live in a world divided by political ideologies, creed, and class. Can AND be powerful enough to bridge opposing beliefs and ideas? In this episode, I explore how an improv game can help us bridge the contradictions within ourselves and the divides in our society. I explore how the “Yes, And…” game can develop our deep listening skills and foster creativity, connection, and cooperation. I explain why our conversations regarding social issues become heated and illustrate how we tend to blame rather than build. I also discuss what's possible when we surrender our need to always be right and speak from a place of love and understanding. “The ‘inclusive, loving world' piece requires us to explore the ANDs between us.” - Erin Baker   This week on Life in the AND: Our increasingly divided world and the need to explore the ANDs between us Dante Clemons and the barriers she faces as a black woman Bridging political divides with Seth Samuels What keeps us healing our deepest divides in the world The ‘Yes, And...' improv game, how it can help us bridge divides and differences, and how to play it How playing the ‘Yes, And' game can help us develop emotional intelligence and creativity Why our conversations become heated and triggering Building bridges brick by brick and surrendering our need to be 100% right Related Content: Creating Magic Through Fully Being in your ANDs with Matt Chavlovich We Are All Walking Contradictions with Hayden Lee What Becomes Possible When We Have High Intention and Low Attachment to Our Goals Resources Mentioned: Yes, And: How Improvisation Reverses “No, But” Thinking and Improves Creativity and Collaboration - Lessons from the Second City by Kelly Leonard  Embrace Life in the AND Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of Life in the AND, the podcast helping you embrace the AND in your life to cultivate more authenticity, creativity, inclusiveness, and love in every area of the world around you. Lessons on Connection from a CRM Founder

The Development Exponent: A Leadership Perspective

Play Episode Listen Later May 21, 2019 29:29

Live or die? Not too long ago our ability to survive directly correlated to our ability to develop relationships with our families and local tribes. In modern times-- and especially in business, our ability to develop relationships can mean the difference between thriving and losing out. We are biologically wired to be social creatures, and so it seems that building networks should come naturally. But, our prehistoric system is able to handle no more than 100 relationships, 50 semi-effectively, and in the last decade the number of accessible people and the ease of connection has increased exponentially. Now you can be in touch with tens of thousands of people. This is a bit more than we are designed to meaningfully manage. To discover the new questions and solutions around business relationship management, Bruce Holoubek, owner of Contracted Leadership, and Host of The Development Exponent Podcast talks to Zvi Band, the Founder of Contactually, a relationship-oriented CRM company. The company grew to eight figures in revenue and to a team of 70 before being acquired. Zvi Band is also the Author of Success is in Your Sphere, a book cataloging his success with Contactually, that also acts as a guide to effectively using the CRM. The primary challenges for maintaining relationships are always, knowing whom to talk to, when to talk to them, and what to say that will show our value, which will allow us to maintain the relationship. But, the fundamental, and often most difficult challenge that we are all faced with is that we are all wired for short term benefits. If we weren't, we would choose to act how “future us” would act; we would eat that salad instead of the burger, we would save that dollar instead of online shop. Likewise, in the business world we are focused on what is immediately in front of us, and on what is going to fill that quota or sale today or tomorrow, not four years from now. It's easy to look backward and say that we received a benefit or job because of someone we knew, but when we have the choice to focus on the immediate or on calling a former client and checking in with them, we choose to deal with urgent matters at hand. This is where technology, such as a CRM system can help set reminders to reach out. When relationships matter to us, it's not just the relationships with our clients. It's the relationships with our teams, employees, partners, and vendors. Companies that successfully execute on relationship management are evident in how their employees and contractors rate them on review sites like Glass Door. Here are some effective ways to win at relationship management with our teams and clients: Part of developing these good relationships among our teams involves humility. If we as leaders allow our ideas and products to be open to review and suggestions from our employees, it will allow our employees to know that they can bring and explore their own ideas without being immediately shut down. Our vulnerability helps foster trust within our organizations. We shouldn't be, “the smartest person in the room.” Boost this by making sure that everyone in the room has a voice, and become a, “yes, and…” culture of people building on each other's ideas. (For reference see the acclaimed book, Yes, And: How Improvisation Reverses "No, But" Thinking and Improves Creativity and Collaboration--Lessons from The Second City ) Finding the right CRM system, like Contextually is imperative, but it is like buying a Chef's knife-- you have to learn how to use it gain from it. Use guides, such as videos, or Zvi Band's book, Success Is in Your Sphere: Leverage the Power of Relationships to Achieve Your Business Goals, on learning the system to have it work best for you. For example, if there is an option to create a drip campaign, have your people think of the most relevant ways to time it and not just go with a standard setting. Set your own strategy. Ultimately, for any connection development we need to start with a strategy. Start with the goal in mind: identify what your goals are for the year. Identify the people who can help you with those goals. Pick up the phone and say, “Hey, I've been thinking about you. Hope all is alright.” Just those words, “hope all is alright,” are all we really want to hear-- to know that somebody cares and we are not alone. The Development Exponent: A Leadership Perspective

The Secret We have to admire the bravery of those entrepreneurs on Shark Tank. They put their life savings, mortgages, and reputations on the line for the chance to launch a winning idea or innovative product. In a sea of products and services, they see themselves as uniquely capable of serving the need. But, how do they feel sure that they are the ones to disrupt an industry or to make the sales happen? Aside from the passion and grit, there are behind the scenes resources like EnventysPartners. Enventys Partners is a firm that combines product development and marketing services to help entrepreneurs, startups, and enterprise companies quickly bring their innovative products to the market. They've helped entrepreneurs raise over $175,000,000 using crowdfunding while advising global startups on digital marketing and growth. Among those clients are 18 entrepreneurs who have gone on to win partnerships from each of the Sharks and guest Sharks. Because his company consistently brings viable partnerships to the show, President and Co-Founder Roy Morejon has a direct line to the show's producers. However, to keep helping startups and inventors move their ideas, Morejon needs to foster that creativity in his own employees and culture. To glean insight into how an innovation leader navigates his own success, Bruce Holoubek, owner of Contracted Leadership, and Host of The Development Exponent Podcast talks to Morejon, exploring several key questions that include, how his innovators stay productively creative, what makes meaningful career, and what methods or tools he uses in his own company to achieve the rapid growth and success that has earned them regular features on CNN, Forbes, and Huffington Post. The Joy of the Why It's amazing to be the first people outside of the entrepreneurs' friends and family that have the opportunity to review the product idea and help them through the process of potentially bringing that idea to the market. Seeing the idea come from a napkin sketch, to making the molds or building out and doing the engineering and prototype work, to building out the assets, then running a campaign and having millions of people back the products, is the exhilarating joy of participating in the evolution of a startup. On the other side of that joy, is the heaviness of telling inventors that “the baby is ugly.” Most of the entrepreneurs' friends won't tell them the full truth, so we have to step in and have that uncomfortable conversation. This either leads to finding ways to improve the product or idea, or to advising the entrepreneur to sell the idea to a company that is already being successful with a very similar thing. The How Purposeful work environments are led by and enshrined in their core values. Core values define who we are as leaders and what we look for in employees, and have to be present in each new team member that joins the team. The values that prove to work as the fertile soil for in the startup space are: Fun. Enjoy working with each other. Assured. Have confidence in what we do. Innovative, we can apply ourselves to overcome obstacles. Reputable. Don't use black hat tactics or cut corners. Passionate. Believe in the mission of the company and believe in the mission of our work. Agile. Wear many hats and pitch in to help the whole team when needed. The results, of course, come from practice. A system that ensures that people throughout the organization are keeping these values top of mind is key. Part of that system are tools that foster thoughtful communication. Morejon uses Slack internally for communications within and between the teams. Everything has a channel. Into Slack he has incorporated Bonusly. Through Bonusly each employee receives 20 points that they can give to each other for embodying the core values. For example, there is a channel called Feedback through which a team member can comment that another team member did a great job with getting the news letter out, and then mark it with a hashtag that applies to a core value, such as #innovative or #agile. Everybody can see this channel throughout the company and across teams. They can see what each person and team is doing and see what values are being noted. At the end of the month managers can go in and see who is the top reputable individual, what core values they are being assigned, and then they reward that person with a monetary bonus. This engagement with core values translates into employees' personal lives as much as it aids in professional development. Everyone likes to be recognized and acknowledged, and it feeds into their motivation. We as bosses can see what our employees are working for. Are they doing what they want to be doing? Are they happy with their work? Are they being effective communicators? Are they using the channels often? We can have insight into these things through tools like Bonusly and get ahead of issues before they become too big, or we can steer someone towards a position they'd rather be in, or support a larger personal goal. Connecting Through Growth When a company is growing rapidly, there are more needs to pay attention to and it can be hard to keep an employee involved through all growth. But this is where communication is key. The way to achieve this is by having more frequent check-ins for establishing baselines. Ask your employees questions about how their lives are going, and if there is anything new. Then try to focus on if there is anything they are worried about or if there are any rumors they've heard, and ask how things are with their relationships, such as family or co-workers. End the conversation by focusing on their career goals. Ask if they feel they are achieving their career goals, and then, set goals for your next interaction-- things to focus on. In this way you act as an advisor and support person. When you have an open ear to the personal lives as well as professional goals of your employees, you can become a partner in their growth, and growth feeds invention and creativity. Creative Killed the AI Star Robots are doing so much work these days and are becoming more creative because they can scale. Give them a movie and they can pull out every single snapshot of what that picture is or what's happening there but they're not the best at writing or getting into the nuances of a scene. They can describe color or size of a product, but not why we need it. They don't understand the intuitive connection-- and that is what we need when we are launching a product. We need human creatives who understand how to write about a product that it will make your life better. As we move to the future, robots will take over the more route or repetitive jobs, but people who are creative will take on the roles of leadership. It's not spoken about enough-- but creativity is a leadership requirement. Creative leaders are the ones who can conceive the solutions for tomorrow. This is where innovation truly comes into play, where you have the ability to solve problems with relevancy and novelty. Because of this, creativity is one of the most important skills in the that emerging leaders must have. Though it may be an innate skill for some, it can also be a learned and developed skill. Your emerging leaders as well as your season executives can benefit tremendously from creative development. Workshops and tools that improve creative thinking are gaining popularity in recent years, and are showing fascinatingly positive results. One highly acclaimed tool is The Second City Works improvisation workshop. You can read about it in Kelly Leonard's Book,  Yes, And: How Improvisation Reverses "No, But" Thinking and Improves Creativity and Collaboration--Lessons from The Second City You can also watch Kelly Leonard's Ted Talk, Learning Lesson Through Improv. Finally, it's encouraging to remember that creativity lives in different abilities within us. For some, it may be the way they design and connect systems, for some it may be visual art, while for others it may be the way they understand customer motivation and design incentivization. It really depends on the lens you look through. Overall, creativity keeps your teams inventive, agile, and able to think over obstacles, and that is something every business can use. Since then, she has won multiple positions in symphonic orchestras from Richmond to Phoenix and is currently serving as concertmaster of the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra. Holly began developing her leadership skills at the renowned Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University with former Baltimore Symphony concertmaster Herbert Greenberg. Mike Ganino is a former Chief Operating Officer at one of the fastest growing fast casual brands and now leads his own training and consulting organization.   Mike is also a leading expert on building a great restaurant and hospitality brand with innovative training and speaking on culture design, people systems, positive leadership, and branding. He has worked with a number of category leading brands like Pressed Juicery, Protein Bar, Yum! Brands, Potbelly Sandwich Shop, ChowNow, USFoods, and Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises.  Today, he will tell us how he uses all these amazing experiences to help companies, leaders, and individual contributors embrace change, accelerate growth, and achieve breakthrough performance.     It All Started With Improvisation  His years in the ultra-competitive business industry has made Mike a master of improvisation; however, looking back, he said that his improvisation skills were probably developed even earlier than that -- back when he was a kid growing up in a low-income household where improvisation was not an option, but a necessary part of everyday life.  Developing the Language  Mike shares that he learned to figure out how to make the most of whatever he has at an early age -- eventually becoming so adept at it that people started approaching him for tips.   The problem was, it’s something that comes instinctively to him that he didn’t even know how to explain it. That’s until he stumbled upon a book that teaches what it calls the “Yes, And” mindset.   The “Yes, And” Mindset  Sometimes, we spend too much time worrying over how our words come across that we fail to connect with our audience. Mike said that’s what adopting the “Yes, And” mindset fixed for him.   Once he learned how to stop saying “No, I can’t. That’s not gonna work” and started saying “Yes, and? I’m listening” whenever something new comes up instead, opportunities he never thought were possible began opening up to him left and right. Those opportunities included public speaking.  Telling Your Story  Everyone wants to share their story, but not everyone wants to listen to other people’s -- and that’s why everyone keeps missing the point.  To really know how you can make an impact on other people, Mike said that you need to listen to what they say.  Ask questions. Ask them what they think of you, how you have helped them, and what else you can do for them. Make adjustments if necessary.   Sometimes, you won’t even realize your own potential until someone points it out to you.  Building Relationships  If there’s something that Mike has always been grateful for, it’s that he made a lot of great partnerships and connections. He admits that he’s always performed better when he works with a group, and this is why he’s so passionate about helping organizations to truly connect with their members.  Public Speaking Advice  Mike often gets asked what advice he can give to people who want to get into public speaking, and he said that there are three things that you need to remember: Celebrity, Expertise, and Skills. You need to be able to make a name for yourself, and to do that, you need to show how good you are at solving problems, but not only that, you need to have the delivery skills to connect with your audience so you can show them what you can do.   Favorite Book Recommendation  Mike has always been very vocal of how the “Yes, And” mindset has impacted his life, and this why he highly recommends Kelly Leonard and Tom Yorton’s “Yes, And: How Improvisation Reverses "No, But" Thinking and Improves Creativity and Collaboration--Lessons from The Second City.”  Get in Touch With Mike  If you have an event coming up and would like to know how Mike can help you, you can get in touch with him via his official website. While there, you can also check out testimonials from his previous clients to get an idea of what it’s like to work with him.
