Like all immigrants who fled to the U.S. to escape civil war, Ismar Volic has a deep personal appreciation for American democracy. And Volic - a Bosnian refugee from the Yugoslavian civil war who is now director of the Institute for Mathematics and Democracy at Wellesley College - fears that American democracy has now slipped into existential crisis and might only be fixable with the help of math. Thus Volic's new book, Making Democracy Count, which explains how mathematics can not only improve voting and representation but can even be used to help fix a gerrymandered electoral map that reduces the value of many American votes to near zero. Ismar Volić is professor of mathematics and director of the Institute for Mathematics and Democracy at Wellesley College. His work has appeared in publications such as The Hill, Cognoscenti, and Education Week.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE.
What's the best way to determine what most voters want when multiple candidates are running? What's the fairest way to allocate legislative seats to different constituencies? What's the least distorted way to draw voting districts? Not the way we do things now. Democracy is mathematical to its very foundations. Yet most of the methods in use are a historical grab bag of the shortsighted, the cynical, the innumerate, and the outright discriminatory. Making Democracy Count: How Mathematics Improves Voting, Electoral Maps, and Representation (Princeton UP, 2024) sheds new light on our electoral systems, revealing how a deeper understanding of their mathematics is the key to creating civic infrastructure that works for everyone. In this timely guide, Ismar Volic empowers us to use mathematical thinking as an objective, nonpartisan framework that rises above the noise and rancor of today's divided public square. Examining our representative democracy using powerful clarifying concepts, Volic shows why our current voting system stifles political diversity, why the size of the House of Representatives contributes to its paralysis, why gerrymandering is a sinister instrument that entrenches partisanship and disenfranchisement, why the Electoral College must be rethought, and what can work better and why. Volic also discusses the legal and constitutional practicalities involved and proposes a road map for repairing the mathematical structures that undergird representative government. Making Democracy Count gives us the concrete knowledge and the confidence to advocate for a more just, equitable, and inclusive democracy. Learn more about your ad choices.
This episode kicks off the collaboration between AWE EU 23 in Vienna and this podcast, in which the community of Spatial Realities profits from some nice perks! In the next few months before the conference, you will be able to listen to exclusive interviews with speakers you can see and hear live at AWE Vienna. Additionally, you can win 3x2 tickets for Europe's most important XR conference this year in three unannounced episodes (in English). And if you don't want to bet on your luck to get a ticket, use SPATIAL20D to get 20% off the ticket for AWE in Vienna 24+25 October. INTERVIEW "Learning about the history of XR is very important." Ori Inbar answers, as I ask where his journey as XR Professional started. As listeners know, I always love to look back into the development of an industry. Especially when the industry is complicated, expensive and needs so much endurance to fulfill its promises as the XR industry does. Ori continues with an insight which explains why the history lesson is important: "The folks jumping into this industry in the last few years can learn a lot from what happened there. And based on that knowledge and understanding they can prepare better for the future and accelerate the development of this whole industry." Ori is not just spouting a hollow phrase here. Before he made his hands dirty in the very beginnings of the XR industry, Ori learned about what the research community had already done in the past decades in Augmented Reality and went to events like Ismar, the International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality. When Apple started the age of mobile computing with launching the iPhone, Ori co-founded Ogmento with industry veterans. First access to the camera API was not possible and AR only worked on jail-breaked devices. Ogmento and many more pleed Apple to open up the API which later was done. That was the start of a whole new AR app industry, which Ori brought together on the first edition of Augmented World Expo, AWE in 2012. Learn more about the enlightening history of the XR industry in this episode and what Ori has to say about the Metaverse-hype and what the announcement of Apples Vision Pro means for the future of the industry! https://spatialrealities.de/
O nosso entrevistado é saxofonista, flautista e arranjador. Acompanhe a entrevista. Entrevista realizada dia 30 de maio de 2023. LINKS – Vinicius Augustus - Instagram - @viniciusaugustusmusic https://www.instagram.com/viniciusaugustusmusic/

Learning has no boundaries. The design of a school should not have boundaries. The school is part of Kampung Kerinchi. Amirul Hakim Ismar's Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) school is a design thesis project that dealt with the B40 community's problems of kids not interested in education. The image of the technical and vocational school in Malaysia needs to be changed. It is not an "alternative" to the mainstream school, asserts Amirul, but as just one of the choice the student will take. We need to be saying the right things about education. A compelling story of his experience and thoughts, learn more about what Amirul has to say about the project's importance in the context of Kampung Kerinchi and addressing the nation's issue on TVET. Malaysia's solution to help reduce school drop-outs and employment is the creation of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) school ( believed to have been introduced just recently in the last 15 years), and this teaser provides a glimpse to the issues and design thesis concept that Amirul Hakim Ismar explored in his design thesis project in 2018-19 at Kampung Kerinchi. The street concept is the solution to creating an urban TVET (for school leavers at 16 years old) right in the area of the B40 population (low income earners) where the most important thing for a child is to put food at the table for the family, and due to this pressure, TVET provides the education for a semi-skilled and even skilled work-force, and why not right in the middle of the city where the urban condition is situated, literally next to your house. Something to do with their hands and earn some money and building a small business enterprise right in the school itself, would create a different meaning to the idea of what a school should be to help these kids. Tune in to the interview coming soon.
