After traumatic events, such as hurricanes, there are two areas in particular that need damage repair. One is the actual physical destruction and the other can be the psychological damage. A two-part documentary produced and streamed by Louisiana Public Broadcasting deals with both areas. One “Trauma in the Wake of Climate Change” looks at the life strategies for re-building; and the other “After the Storms” examines Lake Charles' 2020 recovery from Hurricane Laura. Avery White and Ben Johnson, the LPB producers responsible for the two presentations, talk to Louisiana Life Executive Editor Errol Laborde, along with Producer Kelly Massicot, about survival and the ongoing struggles.

Last week, the state broke ground on its costliest and most controversial project aimed at rebuilding Louisiana's degraded coastline and maintaining the marsh as sea levels continue to rise. Located in Plaquemines Parish, the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion will totally alter the landscape off the parish's west bank. The Coastal Desk's Halle Parker joins to tell us more about the project and the future of Louisiana's coastal restoration efforts. Robert Darrow, managing director and artistic director of the Shreveport Little Theatre, and Sherry Kerr, a former board member of the theater, tell us the story of the century-old community theater, which has the distinction of being the first place where comedian George Carlin took the stage as an actor. LPB premieres a documentary about the theater's storied history on Monday, August 21. When Cullman County, Alabama was founded in 1873 it was advertised as a place with “No Blacks and No Indians.” Its largest city was a sundown town. But one of the oldest communities in Cullman county was a safe haven for Black people in the state and in some ways still is. Last year, WBHM's Kyra Miles talked to residents of “Colony” about its rich history and present. We give that conversation a second listen. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Adam Vos. Our managing producer is Alana Schreiber. Our engineers are Garrett Pittman and Aubry Procell. You can listen to Louisiana Considered Monday through Friday at 12:00 and 7:30 pm. It's available on Spotify, Google Play, and wherever you get your podcasts. Z., Xie, H., Du, X., Zhou, Q., Xiao, Y., Zhao, Z., Jia, X., Xu, J., Zhang, W., Li, Z., Fu, X., Hua, R., Cai, J., Chang, S., Sun, J., Sun, H., Shen, Q., Xu, Q., Ni, X., Tu, H., Zheng, R., Xu, X., Wang, H., Fu, Y., Wang, L., Li, X., Yang, H., Yao, Q., Shen, W. L. Abstract: Thermal homeostasis is vital for mammals and is controlled by brain neurocircuits. Remarkable advances have been made in understanding how neurocircuits centered in the hypothalamic preoptic area (POA), the brain's thermoregulation center, control warm defense, whereas mechanisms by which the POA regulates cold defense remain unclear. Here, we confirmed that the pathway from the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPB) to the POA, is critical for cold defense. Parallel to this pathway, we uncovered that a pathway from the LPB to the dorsomedial hypothalamus (DMH), namely the LPB-DMH pathway, is also essential for cold defense. Projection-specific blockings revealed that both pathways provide an equivalent and cumulative contribution to cold defense, forming a parallel circuit. Specifically, activation of the LPB-DMH pathway induced strong cold-defense responses, including increases in thermogenesis of brown adipose tissue (BAT), muscle shivering, heart rate, and physical activity. Further, we identified a subpopulation of somatostatin+ neurons in the LPB that target the DMH to promote BAT thermogenesis. Therefore, we reveal a parabrachial-hypothalamic parallel circuit in governing cold defense in mice. This not only enables resilience to hypothermia but also provides a scalable and robust network in heat production, reshaping our understanding of how neural circuits regulate essential homeostatic behaviors. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.04.10.536301v1?rss=1 Authors: Yahiro, T., Kataoka, N., Nakamura, K. Abstract: Thermoregulatory behavior in homeothermic animals is an innate behavior to defend body core temperature from environmental thermal challenges in coordination with autonomous thermoregulatory responses. In contrast to the progress in understanding the central mechanisms of autonomous thermoregulation, those of behavioral thermoregulation remain poorly understood. We have previously shown that the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPB) mediates cutaneous thermosensory afferent signaling for thermoregulation. To understand the thermosensory neural network for behavioral thermoregulation, in the present study, we investigated the roles of ascending thermosensory pathways from the LPB in avoidance behavior from innocuous heat and cold in rats. Neuronal tracing revealed two segregated groups of LPB neurons projecting to the median preoptic nucleus (MnPO), a thermoregulatory center (LPB[->]MnPO neurons), and those projecting to the central amygdaloid nucleus (CeA), a limbic emotion center (LPB[->]CeA neurons). While LPB[->]MnPO neurons include separate subgroups activated by heat or cold exposure of rats, LPB[->]CeA neurons were only activated by cold exposure. By selectively inhibiting LPB[->]MnPO or LPB[->]CeA neurons using tetanus toxin light chain or chemogenetic or optogenetic techniques, we found that LPB[->]MnPO transmission mediates heat avoidance, whereas LPB[->]CeA transmission contributes to cold avoidance. In vivo electrophysiological experiments showed that skin cooling-evoked thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue requires not only LPB[->]MnPO neurons but also LPB[->]CeA neurons, providing a novel insight into the central mechanism of autonomous thermoregulation. Our findings reveal an important framework of central thermosensory afferent pathways to coordinate behavioral and autonomous thermoregulation and to generate the emotions of thermal comfort and discomfort that drive thermoregulatory behavior. Here is a question we should all consider: “Why Louisiana Ain't Mississippi or Anywhere Else?” Philosophers have long pondered the question but now there is good news, a TV documentary series takes a closer look. Jay Dardenne, a two time Lt. Governor and Secretary of State and now the governor's Commissioner of Administration, and Linda Midgett, a producer for Louisiana Public Broadcast (LPB), join Louisiana Life Executive Editor Errol Laborde and podcast producer Kelly Massicot to talk about the documentary, which will be broadcast and streamed over the LPB system. The content is a romp through Louisiana history filled with history, anecdotes, talking heads and some laughs. Oh yes, the two have assured that while Louisiana is indeed great, Mississippi ain't so bad either.

On the afternoon that Mr. Alton Warwick, widowed husband and business partner of Margaret “Maggie” Lewis Warwick, sat down with All Y'all and LPB to share his memories of The Louisiana Hayride, only seven months had passed since Maggie's death. For decades, he and Maggie had worked side-by-side to promote the Hayride as a potential economic driver for Shreveport. Her absence loomed large over our conversation. Maggie had been a fixture in Alton's life since his youth in Shreveport; he'd met her through his record-producing, electric guitar-playing cousin, Mira Smith, owner of Shreveport's Ram Records. Alton saw firsthand how the music industry limited the opportunities of female performers and producers like Smith and Lewis. “Girl singers were just to sing,” Alton said. “They weren't supposed to make waves, they weren't supposed to produce records. They were not supposed to lead the band. But her and Mira, they were not going to go quietly into the night. On the afternoon that Mr. Alton Warwick, widowed husband and business partner of Margaret “Maggie” Lewis Warwick, sat down with All Y’all and LPB to share his memories of The Louisiana Hayride, only seven months had passed since Maggie’s death. For decades, he and Maggie had worked side-by-side to promote the Hayride as a potential economic driver for Shreveport. Her absence loomed large over our conversation. Maggie had been a fixture in Alton’s life since his youth in Shreveport; he’d met her through his record-producing, electric guitar-playing cousin, Mira Smith, owner of Shreveport’s Ram Records. Alton saw firsthand how the music industry limited the opportunities of female performers and producers like Smith and Lewis. “Girl singers were just to sing,” Alton said. “They weren’t supposed to make waves, they weren’t supposed to produce records. They were not supposed to lead the band. But her and Mira, they were not going to go quietly into the night. So, in Nashville and all of those places, they made a mark in a man’s world.” What began as a conversation about country music history quickly became an oral history of a match made in country music heaven. Thank you for the motivation! We're live and back with new music from Smino, Don Tolliver, LightSkinKeisha, Gunna and more of your favorite artists!
Tony Robbins Official Comeback Challenge so far has been amazing! I am choosing this season to mark the beginning of the new story in my life as I step into my power and align with my life's mission. We all have had L.B.P's (Limiting Belief Patterns) that have held us back, that distract us, that make us question if what we believed in our heart is something that we can achieve. These limiting beliefs start to make us question the things we know in our hearts to be true. The LPB's may bring up feelings of unpreparedness that can hold us back from stepping into a higher version of ourselves. But just like I say in the into THE TIME IS NOW!It may be scary, there will be some fear (that is natural), but we must choose to take our power back!No longer can these LBP's be the underlying reason for us to continue to tell the old story of ourselves. When we show up and let go of our old story and step into our purpose everything will naturally fall into place. This may take strength, it may take courage, and it definitely will take trust!Rest assured your soul knows the way! And it will guide you into our calling. As we step into our power the people, the information, the processes that are in line with your truth will appear just in time to help bring your highest vibrational reality into your present space. If you are a woman who resonates with my story be on the lookout my Facebook Group ( Women's Master's of the Mind Group) is sure to be out soon! Love you Lots #Namaste

Abstract: Heat defense is crucial for survival and fitness, and its dysregulation may result in deaths due to poor management. Transmission of thermosensory signals into hypothalamic thermoregulation centers represent a key layer of regulation in heat defense. However, the mechanism by which these signals are transmitted into the hypothalamus remains poorly understood. Here, we reveal that glutamatergic prodynorphin and cholecystokinin neuron populations in the lateral parabrachial (LPB) are progressively recruited to defend elevated body temperature. These two nonoverlapping neuron types form circuitries with downstream preoptic hypothalamic neurons to inhibit BAT thermogenesis and activate tail vasodilation, respectively. Both circuitries are selectively activated by warm temperatures and are required for fever limiting. The prodynorphin circuitry is further required for regulation of energy expenditure and weight homeostasis. Thus, these findings establish that the genetic and functional specificity of heat defense neurons occurs as early as in the LPB and uncover categorical neuron types for encoding two heat defense variables, which may provide targets for treating thermoregulation disorders.

Vince Hayward, CEO of L. H. Hayward Company, brings passion and joy as he speaks of the many ways beans can enrich and nourish your life. A graduate of UL-Lafayette in Business Administration, Vince is a hands-on manager of the company which produces the iconic Camellia Bean brand. The beginnings of this family business began in 1850 when his great-great-great-grandfather, Sawyer Hayward, relocated from Bermuda to New Orleans. A vibrant shipping port, New Orleans offered the Hayward family the opportunity to expand their trade capacity for sales of cotton and other dry goods. It was in the Caribbean Islands and the West Indies that Hayward first learned about beans and gained a fondness for them. He brought that knowledge to the U. S. and also began selling beans, along with other goods, in bulk. In 1923, the company was formally organized and named Camellia after the favorite flower of the wife of L.H. Hayward, Jr. The Haywards supplied wholesale beans and other foods to local corner grocery stores and restaurants; over the years, their business focus narrowed to the distribution of beans. Around 1940, when supermarkets were first coming about, William Gordon Hayward came up with the revolutionary idea to package beans in individual bags for sale directly to consumers. Post-WWII, as people had access to transportation and were moving to the suburbs, consumer sales of the individual beans took off. Today, 19 different varieties of beans are sold by Camellia, with over 80,000 to 100,000 pounds of beans packaged every day in its facility in Elmwood. Photo by Brett Duke, Nola.comJarrod Carter stacking black-eye peas for shipping. Photo by Brett Duke Camellia sources its beans from all over the U. S., and at times Canada if needed, and Vince explained that edible beans aren't typically grown in humid areas such as Louisiana. From the time the beans are harvested from the field to the time they make it to your plate, the beans have been examined six to eight times in a mechanical, technological process, as well as inspection by the human eye, to remove foreign materials or filter out beans that do not meet rigid specifications relating to color or size. The Haywards have worked for generations to ensure that the product in the bag is the best it can possibly be starting with sourcing the best quality beans possible. Their growers have been supplying the product for generations and understand the quality Camellia expects for its brand. The Hayward family supports a holistic approach to eating and beans offer just about the healthiest choice you can make in food. As Vince said, "Beans offer all the great things and none of the bad things. Studies show that three cups of beans per week can be life-changing for your health, especially gut health, which is crucially important, as the fiber feeds the digestive process." "Beans offer a dish that spans all boundaries of economics, race or geography. Everybody loves some type of bean. I love being a part of that. My dream is to have everyone in the country be a fan of red beans and rice!" Vince Hayward There is a grassroots movement among home gardeners to protect the original sources of our food, as people became aware that over 94% of our unique seed strands for fruits and vegetables have been lost forever with the industrialization of farming. As consumers have come to understand the importance of knowing where their food comes from, so has the awareness of the need to protect seeds so that future generations may have access to a diversity of crops. LPB's Christina Melton approached Vince and Camellia Beans for underwriting support of a documentary entitled "Deeply Rooted" which focused on the life of John Coykendall, a renowned heirloom seed saver and artist who has produced over 80 journals of pictures and s...

In this episode, Lawprofblawg, an anonymous social media personality and law professor, discusses the article "Law Reviews, Citation Counts, and Twitter (Oh My!): Behind the Curtains of the Law Professor’s Search for Meaning," which was co-authored with Darren Bush and published in the Loyola University Chicago Law Journal. LPB begins by describing the symposium on legal scholarship in the age of social media for which this article was written. LPB continues by observing how the hierarchies of legal academy perpetuate privilege across a range of spectrums, including race, gender, and class. And LPB reflects on how we might be able to mitigate some of those hierarchies and promote a fairer and more egalitarian scholarly community. Welcome to the first podcast in the series that is about bridging or crossing the gap between you and the big life questions. We are starting big, going for broke and looking for an answer to the question that everyone wants. Happiness. You have got to be happy. Are you happy? Happy birthday. There are so many happiness references in society, and society assumes all things should lead to this end. This word is so powerful it was even included in the USA constitution. It is something we all seek and there are so many roadblocks and life situations that get in the way. So what is it about? In this show Lisa and I explore happiness through a positive psychology lens, using a framework which goes by the acronym PERMA. There is more to happiness than you think, and the good news is that are measures we can take to boost our sense of happiness and meaning. This show was recorded using the Facebook live platform. You can attend the live shows or watch the videos in the facebook group. Life Passion and Business. Please click the link and join the group. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the show The next LPB show will be an interview recorded live face to face on my sofa with an amazing women. But more about that on Tuesday 5th June.

This is the story of how Happy Hour came to endorse Kaitlin Marone for Senate. Normally we describe this show as random conversation with people who have nothing in common. Today our guests do have something in common. They are running for the United States Senate. The election is November 8th, the same day as the presidential election. Although we can t promise you the same level of dramatic fireworks as a presidential debate, our plan was to offer the unique possibility of the participants in this forum getting drunk. That s because we re having a Senate candidates forum in a bar, namely Wayfare, on Freret Street in Uptown New Orleans. Our Producer Graham DaPonte invited 7 candidates for the Louisiana Senate race to join Grant and Andrew for a debate over cocktails. Graham chose those 7 candidates from a the larger field because all 7 live in the New Orleans area. Of the 7, four accepted our invitation. Charles Marsala, Kaitlin Marone, Vinny Mendoza, and Caroline Fayard. Caroline Fayard canceled a few days ago due to a scheduling conflict. And Vinny Mendoza canceled late yesterday because he didn t realize how long it takes to drive from Alexandria to New Orleans. And so that left us with two New Orleans area candidates for United States Senator. Charles Marsala, and Kaitlin Marone. Then, minutes before the show, Charles calls with the news that he s stuck in Baton Rouge fighting a court case to try and get all the candidates on a Louisiana Public Broadcasting debate, as opposed to the 5 of the 24 candidates that the LPB are intending to feature. So that leaves us with the sole participant in today s forum Kaitlin Marone. Kaitlin Marone is a feminist, comedian and politician whose senatorial platform includes "I don t want to take your guns away but you re making me," "Pay women more than men," and "Cops need therapy." If you re undecided, this will definitely help you make your mind up. If your mind s already made up, give this conversation 10 minutes and see if you change it. We re endorsing Kaitlin Marone for US Senate. Vote Marone Photos by Alison Moon. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
