When ADHD Wants Adventure and Autism Just Wants a Nap Patricia (she/her) explores what it means to show up authentically as a neurodivergent person—especially when navigating the tension between wanting novelty (hello ADHD/AuDHD brains!) and craving sameness (thank you autism). She shares candid stories about celebrating her anniversary, managing low energy, social interactions, and dealing with conflict. Patricia also opens up about balancing autistic traits, ADHD novelty-seeking, PDA (persistent drive for autonomy), and honoring her sensitivity. If you're autistic, ADHD, AuDHD, or otherwise neurodivergent, this episode offers relatable honesty, self-compassion, and a reminder that sensitivity is nothing to apologize for. WHAT YOU'LL HEAR IN THIS EPISODE ·      Why showing up authentically—even when low energy or struggling—creates safety and deeper connection. ·      The push-pull between ADHD's love of novelty and autism's need for sameness. ·      A vulnerable look at performance pressure, PDA (persistent drive for autonomy), and the tension of “supposed to” versus authentic presence. ·      Reflections on navigating conflict, rejection, and the looping thoughts that come with OCD and sensitivity. ·      Stories of how small moments of authenticity (complimenting a server, connecting with strangers, sharing vulnerability) can bring ease and humor. ·      The joys of volunteering with puppies, finding novelty in animals, and noticing the small things that bring comfort. ·      Honest sharing about energy struggles, self-judgment, and learning to honor your body's signals. KEY TAKEAWAYS ·       You don't have to perform or mask to be worthy of connection. ·       Novelty and sameness can co-exist—it's about experimenting and noticing what feels supportive. ·       Authenticity often comes in small, ordinary moments that bring relief and connection. ·       Conflict and rejection are painful, but self-trust and curiosity can soften the edges. ·       Sensitivity is not something to apologize for—it's a way of being in the world. SOUND BITES "Show up as you are." "I felt very inadequate." "I really resist it." SENSITIVITY IS NOTHING TO APOLOGIZE FOR; IT'S HOW YOUR BRAIN IS WIRED You are not broken. You were shaped by systems that weren't built for you. You deserve rest, joy, and support exactly as you are. TOPICS COVERED (please adjust for addition of introduction) 00:00 Embracing Authenticity 09:12 Navigating Social Expectations 17:54 Finding Balance in Emotions PODCAST HOST Patricia Young (she/her) was a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for over 17 years, but she is now exclusively providing coaching. She knows what it's like to feel like an outcast, misfit, and truthteller.  Learning about the trait of being a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), then learning she is AuDHD with a PDA profile, OCD and RSD, helped Patricia rewrite her history with a deeper understanding, appreciation, and a sense of self-compassion.  She created the podcasts Unapologetically Sensitive and Unapologetically AuDHD to help other neurodivergent folks know that they aren't alone, and that having a brain that is wired differently comes with amazing gifts, and some challenges.  Patricia works online globally working individually with people, and she teaches Online Courses for neurodivergent folks that focus on understanding what it means to be a sensitive neurodivergent. Hacking Your ADHD

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 15, 2025 49:02 Transcription Available

Hey Team! This week I'm chatting with Beverly Atkins, founder of Pauseture, an audio-based mindful movement platform grounded in the Feldenkrais Method. It's actually kind of funny, despite Feldenkrais not being particularly well known, this isn't the first time I've discussed it on a podcast, although the last time was on my old ultimate frisbee podcast nearly a decade ago. Anyway, in our conversation today, we discuss how Beverly spent decades unknowingly managing her ADHD by overachieving at work and ignoring her body. But we all know this story and how we all eventually hit a breaking point. Fortunately for Beverly, she stumbled her way into the Feldenkrais method. In the podcast, we dive into how these seemingly simple movements helped Beverly calm her nervous system, get better sleep, regulate her sound sensitivity, and develop an entirely new relationship with her attention. We get into how movement can rewire attention, why novelty is so important for ADHD regulation, and how she took her training and built an app that looks to specifically accommodate neurodivergent needs. I loved this episode; there's a lot of wisdom here about self-awareness, regulation, and finding what works for your unique ADHD flavor. If you'd life to follow along on the show notes page you can find that at HackingYourADHD.com/244 YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/y835cnrk Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/HackingYourADHD This Episode's Top Tips 1. Novelty can help drive engagement and attention, especially when it comes to something repetitive like a daily practice. It's not about needing something stimulating in the flashy sense, but rather something that's engaging. Engagement can come in many forms, such as unpredictability, exploration, and just enough challenge to keep us curious. 2. That ability to move your attention on purpose is a skill, one that's often underdeveloped in ADHD brains. While it's easy to think of movement-based practices as purely physical, it's how you're paying attention during the movements that matters; strengthening your ability to shift and direct your attention. 3. Many mindfulness practices involve some level of stillness that doesn't always sit right with some ADHD brains. It's important to listen to what actually works for your body, rather than just what “should” work. If you find the stillness aspect of mindfulness makes you too agitated and restless, try something that has some kind of active aspect to it.

EPP 409 Your Customers are Lazy... and Bored: How to Use That to Your Advantage Show Notes:  This week on The Intuitive Customer, Colin takes a step back and welcomes guest host Morgan Ward to explore one of psychology's favourite contradictions: why customers cling to the familiar, yet crave novelty. From music playlists to yogurt purchases, from comfort food to product design, Colin and Morgan unpack why we're wired for both—and how brands can use that tension to create better customer experiences. Best Quote from the Episode “Familiarity earns trust. Novelty earns attention. Get the balance right, and you earn loyalty.” Key Takeaways Customers don't always prefer the familiar or the new—it depends on context and need. Status quo bias (familiarity) is driven by loss aversion and cognitive laziness. Novelty seeking is driven by boredom and our need for optimal arousal. The best products deliver both—“updated classics” that balance safety and stimulation. Ask yourself: is your customer seeking comfort or excitement right now? Your answer determines whether to lean into familiarity or novelty.

Join George and Laurie as they get curious exploring the need for security to have sexual novelty or if mystery and anticipation increase desire. Either outcome is going to get your wheels spinning and we hope you invite your partner to a thrilling conversation to cross this bridge. Our hosts remind listeners that sexual creativity and risk will be more successful if there is a designed conversation. It is important to be intentional and make a suggestion to your partner, and be open minded to their feedback. We make a clear distinction between this conversation and one that is pressure filled. Why modern communication still relies on ancient words and narratives. All communication and connection depend on one thing: language. That's why Laura Spinney says understanding language — where it comes from and how it evolves over time — can help us use it more effectively.“Language is incredibly powerful,” says Spinney, an author and journalist published in the Atlantic, National Geographic, Nature, and New Scientist. As “humanity's oldest tool,” language has evolved as we have, which Spinney explores in her latest book, Proto: How One Ancient Language Went Global. In addition to the words themselves, there are also the stories that humans have carried with them for millennia. “Some stories that we still tell today,” Spinney notes, have remained stable for tens of thousands of years — providing more than just entertainment — shaping how we understand the world, share knowledge, and build community. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Spinney and host Matt Abrahams discuss why language and storytelling are fundamental to being human, what makes a story compelling, and how our ever-evolving language continues to be our best tool for communication and connection. To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premium.Episode Reference Links:Laura Spinney Laura's Books: Proto / Pale RiderEp.168 How Story Can Change Everything in Your CareerEp.91 Um, Like, So: How Filler Words Can Create More Connected, Effective Communication Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:24) - Power & Limits of Language (02:55) - Detecting Lies (04:46) - Origins of Storytelling (07:42) - What Makes a Great Story (10:31) - Proto-Indo-European Language (12:52) - Language Families & Connections (15:06) - Language Clues in History (17:17) - The Final Three Questions (21:56) - Conclusion  *****Thank you to our sponsors: Stanford Continuing Studies. Black Hat 2025 was a showcase of cybersecurity innovation — or at least, that's how it appeared on the surface. With more than 60 vendor announcements over the course of the week, the event floor was full of “AI-powered” solutions promising to integrate seamlessly, reduce analyst fatigue, and transform SOC operations. But after walking the floor, talking with CISOs, and reviewing the press releases, a pattern emerged: much of the messaging sounded the same, making it hard to distinguish the truly game-changing from the merely loud.In this episode of The Future of Cybersecurity Newsletter, I take you behind the scenes to unpack the themes driving this year's announcements. Yes, AI dominated the conversation, but the real story is in how vendors are (or aren't) connecting their technology to the operational realities CISOs face every day. I share insights gathered from private conversations with security leaders — the unfiltered version of how these announcements are received when the marketing gloss is stripped away.We dig into why operational relevance, clarity, and proof points matter more than ever. If you can't explain what your AI does, what data it uses, and how it's secured, you're already losing the trust battle. Joel Smith speaks on 12 reasons why athletes and coaches may hit a plateau in their performance programs. These include: 1. Lack of stimulation in the training environment 2. Too much stimulation in the training environment 3. Not enough creativity or novelty 4. Lack of a clear plan 5. Too much weightlifting 6. Not enough weightlifting 7. Monotony from failing to wave training loads 8. A lack of representative play and exploration 9. Deficits in skill learning 10. Programs that feel too constricting 11. Athletes not feeling truly seen or heard 12.  Gaps in belief and motivation In this episode, we'll unpack these elements one by one, while also exploring practical methods coaches and athletes can use to break through these plateaus and unlock new levels of performance. Too many repetitive drills and static formats dull the nervous system and the mind. What to try: Use small-sided games or reactive drills to increase decision density. Rotate training environments or sensory constraints to create novelty. Avoid overly choreographed warmups—build something they have to solve. Too Much Stimulation in the Training Environment – [3:18] Overloading athletes with chaos, cues, or novelty can backfire. When there's too much going on, meaningful adaptation slows down. What to try: Balance open tasks with periods of focused repetition. Simplify instructions—set the environment, then observe. Know when to back off and give space for consolidation. Not Enough Creativity or Novelty – [6:00] Without moments of surprise or exploration, athletes stop learning. Creativity sparks engagement—and often, better movement solutions. What to try: Add odd objects, uneven surfaces, or unconventional constraints. Give athletes freedom within drills to explore variations. Don't aim for perfect reps—aim for meaningful reps. Lack of a Clear Plan – [7:36] Randomness without progression can feel chaotic. Athletes need to see where training is going—even if it's nonlinear. What to try: Cycle phases between creative exposure and focused refinement. Revisit key themes and skills, even in exploratory training. Share your intent—clarity builds trust. Too Much Weightlifting – [10:20] Lifting can become a crutch when it overshadows movement quality or reduces time for skill and game-speed work. What to try: Trim down barbell volume in favor of transfer-driven tasks. Use loaded movements that keep athletes grounded and aware. Ask: Is this lift enhancing or muting athleticism? Not Enough Weightlifting – [12:12] Some environments undervalue lifting altogether, leading to gaps in tissue tolerance and general strength. What to try: Use tempo and iso-based lifts to build coordination and robustness. Make lifting complementary, not competitive, with field work. Keep it simple—progressive resistance is still powerful when done well. Monotony from Failing to Wave Training Loads – [13:44]
