“Drop it!” So how could a 40-year-old film about a dystopia in which capitalism has run amok and the overreach and militarisation of the police […] The post RoboCop – Cane and Rinse No.674 appeared first on Cane and Rinse.
To continue the cop movie themed week, Tom, Gil & I highlight the ROBOCOP trilogy, both TV shows & its remake. We also go more into the overall focus on the characters' journeys and villainous OCP corporation while mentioning the Robodoc documentary. TALKING POINTS INCLUDE: *How do the movies & comic book plots basically mix a Batman type city with Lethal Weapon cops & Skynet type computer bases? *Could the Terminator Vs. Movie had actually been made initially? *Did anyone love the '90s TV show Rock N' Roll soundtrack? *How come no one remembers the original unmade remake (which was arguably very imaginative)? *Are some of the violent comedic bits also homages to Death Race 2000? *How wild how the studios didn't get the marketing jokes in the films themselves. *Why did MGM keep making merchandise meant to appeal to kids despite it not being for them? *Is the new ROGUE CITY videogame the only agreed upon sequel or are there still many Part 2 & Prime Directives defenders? *Some praise for the Arrow Blu-Ray contributing to the original film's party movie night nature *Some Phil Tippett backstory as well according ot the latest Disney Plus ILM documentary show *Discussing the unmade Robocoop Vs. Predator comic book project and Robocop's appearance on WCW *We sum up how so many generations saw it before they were old enough to actually see it *Why does the corporation always rely on local crooks to do their dirty work? *Why were crowds okay with this versus other Verhoeven's typical OTT films? *Can you introduce the cheesy '90s show for teens not ready to watch the movies without cringing yourself? *Can you enjoy the 2014 rehash in a Judge Dredd/Training Day way? *Is a Robocop Anime Anthology more feasible these days? *Cam also shares a cool story he heard about Peter Weller's directing career from his peers.
Robocop 2 (1990)Directed By: Irvin KershnerStarring: Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Belinda Bauer, The Old Man returnsHere's a sequel to our best performing episode ever - because you've clearly been clamoring for it and not because we want continued success (if we wanted continued success, why would we talk about Lou Ferrigno movies?). This time Murphy has not only a police strike on his hands, but some shady OCP business is trying to ruin his mojo by scrambling his prime directives and launch a drug addicted upgrade! IMDB.com has this to say about Robocop 2: "RoboCop returns to protect the citizens of old Detroit but faces a deadly challenge when a rogue OCP member secretly creates a new, evil RoboCop 2. "We Also Talked About: The YouTube Effect (Amazon)Vibrations (YouTube)Gladiator (Internet Archive)Ninja Terminator (YouTube)Dexter: Original Sin (Amazon)The Shield (Amazon)Like what you hear here? The Shining Wizards return to cover a huge week in pro wrestling. There is a bit of a snag with the Death Pool as someone picked someone who apparently has been dead for 8 years. We talk some AEW All In Texas & a little bit of ROH Supercard of Honor. Overall Matt enjoyed what he watched (he didn't see everything) & we ponder if HK would have enjoyed any of it. We are then joined by the Stiff Robo Ginger Gary Jay. We get to the root of his nickname, talk about Cats, Robocop, Home Alone, Owls, & so much more. There's a bit of a connection issue, but it's a fine interview & great chat with Gary. Back from break we talk about the weekend WWE had. Covering everything from NXT, Saturday Night's Main Event and Evolution. We sprinkle in a preview of the TNA PPV this weekend before jumping into last week's homework. We go back to ECW July 11, 2006 for Big Show vs Ric Flair in an Extreme Rules Match. Find out how the boys felt about this match. Tony is up this week & he takes us back to 1983 for this AWA Classic. This week, we're diving headfirst into a true 80s cult classic that has sparked some serious debate behind the scenes: Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop (1987)!Join us as we break down this gritty, satirical sci-fi action film set in a near-future, crime-ridden Detroit. The plot follows the brutal murder of honest police officer Alex Murphy, who is then resurrected by the Omni Consumer Products (OCP) corporation as RoboCop, a cyborg law enforcer. As RoboCop dispenses justice with extreme prejudice, fragments of his past life begin to haunt him, leading him on a path of revenge against those who took his humanity.Expect our usual deep dive into the film's themes, iconic moments, and its lasting legacy. However, we have to address the elephant in the room: our very own Marc is adamant that this movie does not qualify to be featured on our show, arguing that it's simply not a horror movie. Is he right? Or does the sheer body horror, dystopian dread, and visceral violence push RoboCop into a genre it might not initially claim? Tune in to hear our full discussion and decide for yourself!

Physical media serves up some classics as well as some that deserve more modern classic status. Peter Sobczynski may disagree with some of them but he joins Erik Childress again this week to bring you the latest and greatest. They include a restored series from Francois Truffaut as well as some oddities involving Fred MacMurray and the “involvement” of The Three Stooges. There are sequels for Robocop and the Ghoulies as well as some more WWII hijinks for Brad Pitt. One of the great westerns of all-time is up for debate. Though there is nothing but love for one of the better low-budget sci-fi films of its day and Bill Paxton making one of the best directorial debuts ever.3:22 - Criterion (The Adventures of Antoine Doinel (4K))12:30 - Kino (Exclusive, Shane 4K)27:39 - Arrow Films (Crumb Catcher)34:19 - Sony (Stop! When the man who plays a renaissance man in one of your favorite movies growing up actually turns out to be an ACTUAL renaissance man, it's ok to meet your heroes. On this incredibly special episode we get the chance to talk with an actor who helped to form our love of movies but also happens to be a ridiculous cool and well rounded dude to boot, we allowed ourselves to be a little bit of a nerd as we sat down with the one and only Peter Weller to talk about his new film 'Bang' but a little bit of everything else inbetween. When feared hitman Bang (Jack Kesy) questions his violent life after a near-death experience by seeing a future beyond bloodshed, he wants out—but his crime boss (Peter Weller) won't let him go without a fight. We had the unique pleasure of talking with Peter about getting this 'fun' script, pronouncing his director's name, what keeps him getting out of bed in the morning, the legacy of some of his more iconic films like Buckaroo Bonzai and Robocop, the music of acting, which led to directing and him ultimately getting his Phd in Italian Renaissance Art History with his book, Leon Battista Alberti in Exile: Tracing the Path to the First Modern Book on Painting which is going into a second printing from Cambridge University Press right now, so hurry up and get your copies on order now. While he may not be a brain surgeon/rocket scientist/rock star like Buckaroo Bonzai, Peter Weller is one hell of an interesting guy who at the age of 78 who wants to keep working and creating until he drops and as someone who aspires to live even a fraction of the life that he has lived, we can't say that we blame him. Doctor Peter Weller is a true renaissance man (in more ways then one) and it was a pleasure to talk with him.'Bang' is on all VOD platforms now.

Well hello there everybody, and welcome back to another episode of Trophy Talk! I (Colin) have stolen the proverbial keys back from Max and am back reunited with Josh to talk all things trophies and what we've been playing in the month of June. First and foremost a very special thank you goes out to Max and Josh for hosting the show while I was on vacation last month, they did a wonderful job. Second, a big thank you goes out to Kevin Garaventa for hosting and putting together our Network's Fireside chat episode. Not only was this episode really well done, but it also inspired us to start focusing on smaller titles and trophy hunts once again. In discussing that topic on this episode Josh and Colin feel that these smaller titles from indie developers (or retro games) may be the key to rediscovering some of the joys of trophy hunting in the second half of the year. That isn't too say that longer lists like Death Stranding weren't worth the time effort, simply that as life gets busier, it is important to have these smaller pallet cleanser games to keep things fresh. Across this episode, Josh and Colin discuss which shorter experiences have been drawing them in recently, all while addressing Patreon write ins, Platinum Shout Outs, and all the tangents that come along with those topics. Of note is that discussions on Robocop, and Elden Ring Nightreign take up a significant amount of time here as Colin and Josh both try to parse out the things they loved and things they found annoying in Fromsoftware's newest title. Do we recommend Elden Ring: Nightreign to the non-soul's player? Does Josh have any idea what the movie Total Recall is about? All of these answers and more lie just beyond the play button. Thank you for listening, and enjoy!

Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 106 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by the host of The Waffle Press Movie Podcast, Diego Crespo discuss the latest film in their Paul Verhoeven series, Total Recall (1990). Following up the massive success of RoboCop, Verhoeven turned his attention to another world, the planet Mars and the work of Philip K. Dick to make another commentary on our military obsessed culture with Total Recall. Following the story of a construction worker who finds out he is actually a super spy who has been planted with false memories of his past and who he is, setting off a chain of events that leads he into a war between the powerful elites of our world and the newly formed colony on Mars. Thought provoking then as it is now, Verhoeven taps into our ongoing paranoia of who is in-charge of our world, and questions whether their leadership is more relevant than a body of citizens willing to fight for their place in the world. Ryan, Jay, and Diego breakdown their thoughts on the film, if its commentary is as strong as RoboCop, the visual effects, Arnold Schwarzenegger's performance, the meaning of the film's ending, and so much more. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music, YouTube and more. This podcast runs 2h3m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Paul Verhoeven with a review of his film, Basic Instinct. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Music: MUSICALIFE, from Pond5 (intro) and “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

On this episode of The Vault, Shawn is joined by Logan and Shiff to dive into the wonderfully weird world of WCW Capital Combat 1990 – aka "The Return of Robocop", aka "How Many Tag Matches Can We Cram Into One Night?" Shawn was there live and he's got stories. Spoiler: Robocop doesn't wrestle, but he does bend some "steel" bars. The gang breaks down: Lex Luger vs. Ric Flair in a cage match with all the drama and none of the clean finishes. The Road Warriors' last hurrah in WCW for a while – and surprisingly go out with a bang. A tag team overload that had some long ass matches and odd pairings, balanced with two bangers. So. Many. Promos. And Segments. Need an intermission? Too bad, here's Gordon Solie being miserable and accosted by purple fog machines. Whether you're here for the debut of El "Lazertron" Gigante, Captain Mike Routnda, A hair match with two bald guys, grown men beating each other with sex straps, the return of JYD, the greatness of the Steiners and The Midnight Express, Luger on his deathbed getting screwed out of the World or just to hear Logan say Robocop, this episode is for you. And hey, if you want to relive the chaos, you can actually watch Capital Combat 1990 on the WCW YouTube Channel – but listen to us first so you know when to enjoy, laugh, cringe, or question your life choices. Well, a movie finally broke us. Horror and mortal terror have a face. In the absolutely dreadful “family film” Tooth Fairy (2010)—quite possibly the worst movie our podcast has ever covered—Dwayne Johnson plays Derek Thompson, a hockey player who specializes in knocking out opponents' teeth. He has a lot on his plate: He's dating Ashley Judd, who has two kids: An adorable little girl who loves him and a punk teenage boy who thinks he's full of crap (Because he is.). At the same time, Derek has some hotshot new competition in the form of Mick “The Stick” Donnelly, a hot-shot new prospect who is described in the span of 25 seconds by the team's coach as both “the future face of this (minor league) franchise” and “only here for a cup of coffee before he makes the NHL.” Then he becomes the Tooth Fairy. Hilarity ensues. Next week: We're off! We return on July 11 for an episode about Fast Five (2011). The Summer of Rock is our summer 2025 miniseries covering the movie career of Dwayne Johnson through nine movies, presented in chronological order. Starting with his attempt at crossing over from the world of wrestling, The Rock's career got off to a bumpy start before finally taking off in the 2010s. But it wasn't long before the bumps returned, and we'll be telling the story for you all summer long! Bonus video: Matt explains how director Paul Verhoeven could predict how the future would feel, through examining three of his movies: RoboCop, Total Recall, and Starship Troopers. In the 1980's seeing the Orion Pictures logo before a movie meant you were about to watch a quality film. Oscar winners like "Amadeus" and "Platoon" were joined by genre defining movies like "Robocop" and "Terminator" in the Orion Pictures family. The problem was that many of these movies were not making any money, and very soon Orion Pictures was doomed to bankruptcy.Join Ty and RD as they look back and discuss the past, and new future, for Orion Pictures.Download the podcast for free.
“I have a new primary user now…me.”The title character from M3GAN being bratty. When the first trailers for the original M3GAN arrived, nobody quite expected it to be one of the horror movie sensations of recent years. But it sure did! Or, we should say, she sure did. Because like all the best horror movie protagonists who go by their first names alone (Freddy, Jason, you get the picture), M3GAN became a pop culture force all her own.And for all the fun ridiculousness contained in that film (and, presumably, in the sequel, M3GAN 2.0 which is now in theaters), it actually raised some interesting philosophical questions. Of course, here at Does it Fly? we're interested in the actual mechanics of building and designing M3GAN herself, but we also are fascinated by the implications of using a realistic A.I. as a therapeutic device. Maybe M3GAN isn't the most nuanced subject for those conversations, but we dive into them, nonetheless. We also had some of the most fun we've had this year in our final section, putting M3GAN “on trial” for her actions, with our hosts, Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi (prosecution) and Tamara Krinsky, Esq. (ok, not really, but she's a hell of a defense attorney in this case) throw vibes out the window this week, so we'll see you in court! All this and more in the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here…https://youtu.be/nteIYlCFAUISUGGESTED VIEWING If you're reading this, you already saw M3GAN, right? Good. If not, despite its somewhat campy reputation, it really is a fun piece of sci-fi with a horror edge and it absolutely deserved to be the box office hit it was. Just note that we hadn't seen M3GAN 2.0 at the time of recording. While 2004's I, Robot isn't beloved by Asimov purists (see our “further reading” section below), it's better than its reputation suggests and comes from frequently underrated director Alex Proyas, so that's good enough for us if you want a little context for the “three laws of robotics” discussed here.Tamara also brings up Steven Spielberg's Minority Report as a film about a technology that has theoretically good intentions…until it's put into practice and immediately abused. FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! Building Your M3GAN (please do not do this)There are three elements of M3GAN that are rooted in science fact but ultimately keep her as science fiction.Fine Motor ControlWe've mentioned the incredible work in humanoid (and canine) robotics being done by Boston Dynamics before, but they don't quite have the dexterity of M3GAN…yet.“Apparent Reasoning”Getting into all of the ins and outs of artificial intelligence and the debates surrounding it is beyond the scope of this show, but even ardent A.I. supporters admit that “true general intelligence” or the ability for machines to actually reason, isn't a thing…yet. Read more here.Power DensityEven assuming these other things were possible, the battery life of M3GAN is beyond the current “power density” of anything out there…for now.Asimov's LawsAs Tamara references, courtesy of Asimov's short story collection, I, Robot…see if you can spot how many of these M3GAN breaks!A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.Kids, Technology, Attention Spans…As Hakeem and Tamara discuss, while technology can be used therapeutically for kids, like anything else, there are potential drawbacks, particularly with attention spans. The Fisher-Price bear hackEven though this happened over a decade ago, it's still a warning light to heed!Hakeem's Favorite AstronautOK, yes, Cady Coleman does seem pretty awesome.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?For other humanoid robot fun with deep and potentially terrifying implications, have you seen our Blade Runner episode? Or might we suggest RoboCop?The new How to Train Your Dragon is currently in theaters and we took a look at the evolutionary possibilities of dragons right here.FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! On episode 105 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys discuss the first film in their Paul Verhoeven series, RoboCop (1987). Known for being one of the most provocative directors of our lifetime, Paul Verhoeven has expertly used genre to tackle strong satirical elements of our society in ways his counterparts have never been able to. From the late 1960's to the early 1980s, the Dutch director mostly worked on films from his side of the world, slowly making his way to American productions by the end of the 80s. His first big introduction to commercial audiences was RoboCop, a futuristic examination on the power of corporations, corruption, crime, and lawlessness left unchecked by justice. Centering on a former police officer turning into the ultimate killing machine, Verhoeven delivers one of the most damning criticisms of American capitalism, as well as a signature film of the era. Ryan and Jay breakdown their thoughts on the film, their favorite lines in the movie, the over-the-top action set pieces, Murphy's (Peter Weller) journey and his reckoning with who he has become at the hands of those who harmed him, the episodic logistics of crime shows, and why no one can make a good satire, political commentary anymore. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Paul Verhoeven with a review of his film, Total Recall.

In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 104 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by Editor-In-Chief of InSession Film Dave Giannini to discuss the last films in their Peter Jackson series, The Hobbit Trilogy (2012/2013/2014). After the failure of The Lovely Bones, Jackson and company turned their attention back to a familiar place, Middle Earth. First starting as a producer, The Hobbit would find Jackson getting back in the director's chair for the prequel to his acclaimed The Lord of the Rings series, taking over the project from Guillermo del Toro, who seemed to struggle to get his vision of the film to mash with what the studio wanted. Instead of the initial two films suggested to tell the story, Jackson set out to make another trilogy, drawing from other texts of J. R. R. Tolkien in order to expand on this smaller story, giving it a grander history to the original trilogy, as well as adding new characters and elements to the classic tale. But Jackson can't capture the magic of The Lord of the Rings, making a messy, CGI heavy collection of films that become more and more tedious as the trilogy goes on; wasting solid performances because the story is now in the hands of a director more focused on his creative toys than making something as spectacular as the trilogy that made him a household name. Ryan, Jay, and Dave breakdown their thoughts on the films, why they look so ugly, the unnecessary love story found in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, how cool dragons are, how there aren't five armies in The Battle of the Five Armies, why these films turn into being a chore by the time they were released, and wonder if Jackson will ever go back to making feature films. The guys also give out their rankings on the Jackson series and reveal who they will be covering for their next movie series. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music, YouTube and more. This podcast runs 2h42m. The guys will be back next week to begin their series on the films of Paul Verhoeven with a review of his film, RoboCop.
