Send us a textRemember when action movies had substance? RoboCop wasn't just an explosive sci-fi flick about a cyborg cop—it was a prescient vision of our future.Watching Paul Verhoeven's 1987 masterpiece today feels eerily prophetic. Long before our current concerns about facial recognition technology, corporate control of public services, and media desensitization to violence, RoboCop was laying it all out with remarkable accuracy. What makes this film truly special is how it balances biting social satire with genuinely thrilling action sequences that still hold up decades later. The practical effects deserve special mention—from the horrific toxic waste scene to Clarence Boddicker's spectacularly bloody demise, these moments remain seared into viewers' memories. Speaking of Boddicker, Kurtwood Smith's performance stands out as remarkably ahead of its time, feeling contemporary even by today's standards. Nancy Allen's portrayal of Officer Lewis also deserves recognition for avoiding the typical female action character tropes of the era—no forced romance, no unnecessary sexualization, just a competent cop who happens to be a woman. What truly elevates RoboCop is Verhoeven's outsider perspective as a Dutch director examining American culture. The film's commercial breaks and news segments might seem like quirky additions, but they build a rich dystopian world while delivering sharp commentary on media, consumerism, and violence. This film isn't just worth seeing—it's essential viewing that rewards multiple watches with new details and insights each time. Whether you're revisiting this classic or experiencing it for the first time, you'll understand why we both rated it 4.5/5 stars without hesitation. Get ready to pour yourself a cocktail, put on an old opera record, and inject yourself with a chemical compound that stretches the bounds of death in a terrifying fusion of science and art, because the crew at Box Office Pulp is back on their wax bullshit with a commentary track for Sergio Stivaletti's Fulci-by-another-name fable, 1997's Wax Mask. The legendary special effects master responsible for the Demons franchise only ever directed a single feature, and this slasher by way of a giallo by way of a Wax Museum mystery has been unfairly forgotten by even the most stalwart horror faithfuls. Listen to the tale of Dario Argento's last boon to a dying frenemy, a museum owner driven by heartbreak to murder and mad science, and a dubbing track that descended into pure, unfiltered Italiano. So remove your mesh mask to reveal your wax mask to reveal your robot(?) skull by listening now!https://www.boxofficepulp.com/Listen on Apple: https://www.boxofficepulp.com/appleListen on Spotify: https://www.boxofficepulp.com/spotifyListen on Amazon: https://www.boxofficepulp.com/amazonAll The OTHER Ways to Listen: https://www.boxofficepulp.com/listenFollow on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BoxOfficePulpPodcast/Follow on Twiter/X: https://x.com/BoxOfficePulp

These movies didn't just entertain, they helped define Generation X adolescence. Why did these films resonate so much? Because the '80s were overflowing with disposable teen cash, hungry studios, and an army of rising stars like Michael J. Fox, Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, John Cusack, and more. Today on the TV/Movie Rewind Podcast, Matt & Todd get reanimated and rearmed with Universal Soldier—Roland Emmerich's 1992 sci-fi action flick that boldly blends high-octane combat with Frankenstein, war crimes, and plenty of roundhouse kicks. Starring: • Jean-Claude Van Damme as “LUC, SAD!” Luc Deveraux, a memory-wiped near-automaton as confused about what he is as he is about who he is. • Dolph Lundgren as “ANDREW, MAD!” Sgt. Andrew Scott, a completely unhinged maniac with a necklace made of ears and probably loves Casualties of War for all the wrong reasons. • Ally Walker as Veronica Roberts, a journalist just trying to do her job and not get murdered by government cyborgs. • Whit Bissell Award winners Jerry Orbach (as Dr. Gregor) and Robert Trebor (as the motel owner), plus genre favorites Ed O'Ross and Leon Rippy. This is great early-90s action: • Government conspiracies • Secret military programs • And a plot that could be described as RoboCop meets First Blood with a dash of Short Circuit if Johnny 5 had been developed by Cyberdyne Systems. • Van Damme kicks people. Lundgren screams about betrayal. There's a diner fight, a farm showdown, and a final battle that ends with a hay baler and some light existential horror.Despite 5 sequels, this one is often forgotten in the larger pool of muscley-action films. For one, Van Damme's box-office draw was waning, and it could be said that this kind of action film a dying genre in 1992, especially with Die Hard a few years earlier establishing a new action archetype.Lastly, at least in America alone, 1992 would be dominated by other classics such as:Disney's Aladdin, Academy Award Winning Unforgiven, Basic Instinct, Reservoir Dogs, A Few Good Men, Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula, Batman Returns, and The Bodyguard, to name a few. This one had an up-hill battle for your memory, so we're giving it another look.

To continue the cop movie themed week, Tom, Gil & I highlight the ROBOCOP trilogy, both TV shows & its remake. We also go more into the overall focus on the characters' journeys and villainous OCP corporation while mentioning the Robodoc documentary. TALKING POINTS INCLUDE: *How do the movies & comic book plots basically mix a Batman type city with Lethal Weapon cops & Skynet type computer bases? *Could the Terminator Vs. Movie had actually been made initially? *Did anyone love the '90s TV show Rock N' Roll soundtrack? *How come no one remembers the original unmade remake (which was arguably very imaginative)? *Are some of the violent comedic bits also homages to Death Race 2000? *How wild how the studios didn't get the marketing jokes in the films themselves. *Why did MGM keep making merchandise meant to appeal to kids despite it not being for them? *Is the new ROGUE CITY videogame the only agreed upon sequel or are there still many Part 2 & Prime Directives defenders? *Some praise for the Arrow Blu-Ray contributing to the original film's party movie night nature *Some Phil Tippett backstory as well according ot the latest Disney Plus ILM documentary show *Discussing the unmade Robocoop Vs. Predator comic book project and Robocop's appearance on WCW *We sum up how so many generations saw it before they were old enough to actually see it *Why does the corporation always rely on local crooks to do their dirty work? *Why were crowds okay with this versus other Verhoeven's typical OTT films? *Can you introduce the cheesy '90s show for teens not ready to watch the movies without cringing yourself? *Can you enjoy the 2014 rehash in a Judge Dredd/Training Day way? *Is a Robocop Anime Anthology more feasible these days? *Cam also shares a cool story he heard about Peter Weller's directing career from his peers.

Key Topics Discussed: Entertainment News: Passings: The hosts mourn the loss of actor Julian McMahon, known for roles as the devil in Charmed and Dr. Doom in the Fox Fantastic Four films, who passed away at 56 from cancer. They also pay tribute to composer Mark Snow, famous for his work on The X-Files, Supernatural, and Smallville, who died at 78. Nostalgia Kick: Nate shares his recent indulgence in 80s and 90s classics via streaming channels like Pluto TV, revisiting Crocodile Dundee 1 and 2, and RoboCop 3. He praises its humor, classic animation style, and surprising edge, though notes its unconventional release under Ketchup Entertainment. Superman (James Gunn): Initially skeptical, Tim admits James Gunn's Superman film exceeded expectations. He praises its balance of humor, action, and a humanized Superman, with standout performances by Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and David Corenswet as Superman. Criticisms include an overpacked plot and excessive focus on Krypto the dog. Harry Potter Series: Filming has begun for HBO's Harry Potter series, with the hosts intrigued by the race-swapped Severus Snape and the challenge of casting new child actors to match the iconic original trio. Star Trek Updates: The hosts discuss Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, enjoying its mix of serious and wacky episodes, including a Q cameo. However, they address rumors of Starfleet Academy and Strange New Worlds Season 5 potentially being shelved due to a Paramount-Skydance merger, and controversy over a proposed remake of the original Star Trek series with the Strange New Worlds cast. Gaming Updates: Helldivers 2 on Xbox: The hosts celebrate Helldivers 2 coming to Xbox Series S/X on August 26, 2025, published by PlayStation Studios' PC port team, Nixxes. Nintendo Switch 2: Tim shares his experience using the Switch 2's game-sharing feature, playing Super Mario 3D World co-op with a colleague. He also discusses The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, praising its updated visuals and challenging final boss. Cyberpunk 2077: The hosts cover the Cyberpunk 2077 2.3 update, adding missions, cars, and an auto-driving feature. They highlight its performance on Switch 2, leveraging DLSS for superior visuals compared to Steam Deck, and note its new Mac version optimized for Apple Silicon. Donkey Kong Bonanza: Tim raves about Donkey Kong Bonanza, a Nintendo Switch 2 title developed by the Super Mario Odyssey team. The game blends open-zone exploration with voxel-based destruction, allowing players to smash through levels as Donkey Kong. Despite a lackluster tutorial, its innovative mechanics and polished chaos earn high praise, positioning it as a potential Game of the Year contender. Banter and Personal Notes: The hosts joke about technical issues, including Discord camera settings and a faulty USB hub, and Nate's “Trumpian tan” from a recent boat trip with Starlink-powered internet. Nate's nostalgia for terrestrial TV leads to a discussion about streaming channels like Pluto TV mimicking that experience. Tim's exhaustion from a tough work week contrasts with the joy of playing Donkey Kong Bonanza to unwind. Closing: The episode wraps with the hosts thanking listeners for sticking with them despite irregular episodes due to life's demands. They promise more The Fork In Your Ear Podcast content with their signature sign-off, “Get forked, catch you on the flippity flop.” Where to Listen: Available on platforms hosting theThe Fork In Your Ear Podcast. The Shining Wizards return to cover a huge week in pro wrestling. There is a bit of a snag with the Death Pool as someone picked someone who apparently has been dead for 8 years. We talk some AEW All In Texas & a little bit of ROH Supercard of Honor. Overall Matt enjoyed what he watched (he didn't see everything) & we ponder if HK would have enjoyed any of it. We are then joined by the Stiff Robo Ginger Gary Jay. We get to the root of his nickname, talk about Cats, Robocop, Home Alone, Owls, & so much more. There's a bit of a connection issue, but it's a fine interview & great chat with Gary. Back from break we talk about the weekend WWE had. Covering everything from NXT, Saturday Night's Main Event and Evolution. We sprinkle in a preview of the TNA PPV this weekend before jumping into last week's homework. We go back to ECW July 11, 2006 for Big Show vs Ric Flair in an Extreme Rules Match. Find out how the boys felt about this match. Tony is up this week & he takes us back to 1983 for this AWA Classic. This week, we're diving headfirst into a true 80s cult classic that has sparked some serious debate behind the scenes: Paul Verhoeven's RoboCop (1987)!Join us as we break down this gritty, satirical sci-fi action film set in a near-future, crime-ridden Detroit. The plot follows the brutal murder of honest police officer Alex Murphy, who is then resurrected by the Omni Consumer Products (OCP) corporation as RoboCop, a cyborg law enforcer. As RoboCop dispenses justice with extreme prejudice, fragments of his past life begin to haunt him, leading him on a path of revenge against those who took his humanity.Expect our usual deep dive into the film's themes, iconic moments, and its lasting legacy. However, we have to address the elephant in the room: our very own Marc is adamant that this movie does not qualify to be featured on our show, arguing that it's simply not a horror movie. Is he right? Or does the sheer body horror, dystopian dread, and visceral violence push RoboCop into a genre it might not initially claim? Tune in to hear our full discussion and decide for yourself!

Physical media serves up some classics as well as some that deserve more modern classic status. Peter Sobczynski may disagree with some of them but he joins Erik Childress again this week to bring you the latest and greatest. They include a restored series from Francois Truffaut as well as some oddities involving Fred MacMurray and the “involvement” of The Three Stooges. There are sequels for Robocop and the Ghoulies as well as some more WWII hijinks for Brad Pitt. One of the great westerns of all-time is up for debate. Though there is nothing but love for one of the better low-budget sci-fi films of its day and Bill Paxton making one of the best directorial debuts ever.3:22 - Criterion (The Adventures of Antoine Doinel (4K))12:30 - Kino (Exclusive, Shane 4K)27:39 - Arrow Films (Crumb Catcher)34:19 - Sony (Stop! Well hello there everybody, and welcome back to another episode of Trophy Talk! I (Colin) have stolen the proverbial keys back from Max and am back reunited with Josh to talk all things trophies and what we've been playing in the month of June. First and foremost a very special thank you goes out to Max and Josh for hosting the show while I was on vacation last month, they did a wonderful job. Second, a big thank you goes out to Kevin Garaventa for hosting and putting together our Network's Fireside chat episode. Not only was this episode really well done, but it also inspired us to start focusing on smaller titles and trophy hunts once again. In discussing that topic on this episode Josh and Colin feel that these smaller titles from indie developers (or retro games) may be the key to rediscovering some of the joys of trophy hunting in the second half of the year. That isn't too say that longer lists like Death Stranding weren't worth the time effort, simply that as life gets busier, it is important to have these smaller pallet cleanser games to keep things fresh. Across this episode, Josh and Colin discuss which shorter experiences have been drawing them in recently, all while addressing Patreon write ins, Platinum Shout Outs, and all the tangents that come along with those topics. Of note is that discussions on Robocop, and Elden Ring Nightreign take up a significant amount of time here as Colin and Josh both try to parse out the things they loved and things they found annoying in Fromsoftware's newest title. Do we recommend Elden Ring: Nightreign to the non-soul's player? Does Josh have any idea what the movie Total Recall is about? All of these answers and more lie just beyond the play button. Thank you for listening, and enjoy!

We'll explore the original RoboCop arcade game, RoboCop 2 and 3, and briefly touch on the glorious chaos of RoboCop vs. Terminator. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
