Byron Athene once again returns, for further expansion from the prelude show-see belowGod-Ivan Illich, in his commentary on Hugh of Saint Victor's Didascalion, explores the medieval understanding of knowledge and learning. He uses the powerful metaphor of "God's Play on Wisdom" to describe how divine wisdom is manifested and communicated through the created world and, particularly, through the study of sacred texts. This isn't a rigid, deterministic transmission, but rather a playful unfolding, inviting human interpretation and engagement. We can draw a compelling analogy here when discussing the concept of God on my podcast. Instead of viewing "God" as a static, fully knowable entity, we can explore how the human understanding of the divine might be akin to interpreting a complex and multifaceted "play" orchestrated by a higher wisdom. This "play" unfolds through our experiences, our relationships, our search for meaning, and even our struggles with doubt and faith.Grandpa Bill WILL BE asking these Questions when Byron Athene actually joins on May 29th (incorporating Illich's analogy):Byron, considering Illich's concept of "God's Play on Wisdom," how might the diverse and often contradictory interpretations of God throughout history be seen as different human readings or engagements with this complex "play"? What psychological factors might influence these varying interpretations?Illich suggests a playful unfolding of divine wisdom. How might this perspective inform our understanding of the role of questioning and doubt in an individual's spiritual or existential journey? Is doubt perhaps an inherent part of engaging with this "play"?The "text" in Illich's analogy refers to sacred writings and the created world. In a modern context, what might be considered the "texts" through which individuals seek to understand or experience the divine, and how does our "reading" of these contemporary "texts" (science, nature, personal experience) shape our concept of God?If our understanding of God is akin to interpreting a "play," how does this analogy impact our perception of religious dogma and doctrine? Are these perhaps like different interpretations or stagings of the same underlying "wisdom"? What are the psychological implications of adhering rigidly to one interpretation versus embracing a more fluid understanding?Illich emphasizes the active engagement of the reader with the text. How does this translate to our personal relationship with the concept of God? Is it a passive reception of information or an active, ongoing process of interpretation and meaning-making?The metaphor of "play" suggests an element of mystery and perhaps even unpredictability. How does this resonate with the human experience of faith, which often involves uncertainty and moments of profound mystery?Drawing on Illich's idea, how might psychological well-being be influenced by an individual's ability to find their own meaningful interpretation within this "play of wisdom," rather than feeling constrained by prescribed understandings of God?Grandpa Bill Asks:Thinking about your own understanding of the divine, what aspects feel like a clearly defined script, and what aspects feel more like an open-ended, improvisational "play" that you are actively participating in? Share your reflections! In what "texts" (whether traditional religious texts, nature, personal experiences, art, etc.) do you find the most compelling "clues" or "insights" into the nature of something greater than yourself? How do you "read" these "texts"?#GodsPlay,#IvanIllich,#InTheVineyardOfTheText,#HughOfSaintVictor,#Wisdom,#Interpretation,#Philosophy,#Theology,#Spirituality,#Psychology,#Podcast,#GrandpaBill,#ByronAthene,#Virtual

Hi friends, we're on a brief summer break at the moment. We'll have a new episode for you in August. In the meanwhile, enjoy this pick from our archives! _____ [originally aired May 17, 2023] You know the feeling. You're trying to read or write or think through a project, maybe even just respond to an email, when your attention starts to drift. You may not even notice it until you've already picked up your phone or jumped tabs, until your mind has already wandered way off-piste. This problem of distraction has become a bit of a modern-day obsession. We now fret about how to stay focused, how to avoid time-sucks, how to use our attention wisely. But it turns out this fixation of ours—contemporary as it may seem—is really not so new. My guest today is Dr. Jamie Kreiner, Professor of History at the University of Georgia. Jamie is the author of a new book titled The Wandering Mind: What Medieval Monks Tell us about Distraction. In the book, Jamie shows that Christian monks in late antiquity and the early middle ages were—like us—a bit obsessed with attention. And their understanding of attention fit within a broad and often remarkably detailed understanding of the mind. In this conversation, Jamie and I talk about why monks in this era cared so much about distraction. We discuss how they understood the relationship between mind and body; how they conceptualized memory, meditation, and mind-wandering. We discuss some of the mnemonic techniques they used, some of the graphical and textual devices that helped keep them focused, and some of the metaphors and visualization techniques they innovated. Along the way we also touch on fasting, sleep, demons and angels, the problem of discernment, the state of pure prayer, the Six Wings mnemonic device, metacognitive maneuvering, and much more. I'll just say I really enjoyed The Wandering Mind. As Jamie and I chat about here, the book illuminates an earlier understanding of human psychology that feels deeply familiar in some ways, and delightfully strange in others. I think you definitely get a sense of that in this conversation. Alright friends, on to my chat with Dr. Jamie Kreiner. Enjoy! A transcript of this episode is available here. Notes and links 4:00 – A webpage devoted to the Ark of Hugh of Saint Victor. 6:30 – For a detailed (and positive) review essay about The Wandering Mind, see here. 11:30 – The Redwall books, by Brian Jacques, are well known for featuring elaborate feasts. John Ruskin once said, “Fine art is that in which the hand, the head, and the heart of man go together.” In this episode, Joshua and Mike discuss the brand-new “Mechanical Arts Program” that they've launched in partnership with Greystone Theological Institute. Inspired by 12th-century theologian Hugh of Saint Victor, their aim is to help thoughtful learners reintegrate the work of the head with the work of the hands. The guys take this episode to discuss the first class held in their Maine woodshop this October.
Dive into the rich tapestry of medieval theology on today's episode! If you've listened to the Sacramentalists for any length of time, you've probably heard Fr. Wesley mention Hugh of Saint Victor. In this episode, he sits down with Dr. Boyd Taylor Coolman, theology professor at Boston College, to discuss Hugh's context and theological contributions. In the episode, Dr. Coolman mentions modern renderings of how Hugh structures the Ark in his Ark Treatises. You can find one of those renderings here. A Vocation StoryBL. ENRICHETTA ALFIERISister Enrichetta Alfieri (1891-1951), from the Sisters of Charity of Saint Jeanne Antide, was involved in pastoral work in the city prisons before. The prison of Saint Victor in Milan became her home, the place of her love. She used to say: « Charity is a fire which likes to expand while it burns; I will suffer, work and pray in order to attract souls to Jesus. » She was arrested during the Second World War because she helped the prisoners who were victims of the Nazi-Fascist violence.
A denominação Adonhiramita é posterior a 1725. As três Potências Simbólicas Regulares do Brasil possuem Lojas Adonhiramitas. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/malhete-podcast/message
A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - World Youth Day begins next week, August 1, in Lisbon Portugal. WYD is a weeklong celebration that attracts hundreds of thousands of young people from all over the world. The event was initiated by Pope John Paul II in 1985. It is celebrated every two to three years and is open to all young people who want to experience Jesus Christ with their peers. It is a way to grow in your faith and strengthen your relationship with Christ through prayer and the sacraments. WYD takes place every two to three years. This WYD would have taken place in 2022, but was delayed due to the pandemic. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/254908/here-are-answers-to-your-questions-about-world-youth-day A federal judge on Tuesday blocked a new Biden administration rule limiting which migrants can apply for asylum. Referred to by some as a “transit ban,” the policy, which took effect May 11, automatically denied asylum to migrants who cross the border illegally or cross other countries illegally to get to the US. The now-blocked asylum policy went into effect after the end of Title 42, a public health order instituted by the Trump administration that barred entry to large numbers of migrants on the grounds of the COVID-19 health crisis. Catholic leaders at the border such as Dylan Corbett, executive director of the Catholic migrant aid group Hope Border Institute, applauded the ruling, assering that “there is no legal basis for the Biden administration's asylum ban.” https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/254917/california-federal-judge-blocks-biden-s-asylum-ban Today, the Church celebrates Saint Victor the first, pope. The date of birth of Saint Victor is unknown, but we do know that he was Pope from 189 to 199. Victor was a native African, and his father's name was Felix. He is known for having obtained the release of many Christians who had been deported to the mines of Sardinia, and for being the first Pope to celebrate the liturgy and write Church documents in Latin rather than Greek. He is most famous, however, for decreeing that Easter be universally celebrated on a Sunday, a practice already common in the West, but not so in the East. He died in 199, possibly from martyrdom. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-victor-i-pope-527
Saints du jour 2023-07-21 Saint Laurent de Brindisi et Saint Victor de Marseille by Radio Maria France
You know the feeling.
No llevaba a nadie detrás.

He went to Paris (c. 1115) with his uncle, Archdeacon Reinhard of Halberstadt, and settled at Saint-Victor Abbey. From 1133 until his death, the school of Saint-Victor flourished under Hugh's guidance. His mystical treatises were strongly influenced by Bishop St. Augustine of Hippo, whose practical teachings on contemplative life Hugh blended with the theoretical writings of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite. Hugh's somewhat innovative style of exegesis made an important contribution to the development of natural theology: he based his arguments for God's existence on external and internal experience and added a teleological proof originating from the facts of experience. His chief work on dogmatic theology was De sacramentis Christianae fidei (“The Sacraments of the Christian Faith”), which anticipated some of the works of St. Thomas Aquinas.Unlike some of his contemporaries, Hugh upheld secular learning by promoting knowledge as an introduction to contemplative life: “Learn everything,” he said, “and you will see afterward that nothing is useless.” A prolific writer, Hugh wrote the Didascalicon, a remarkably comprehensive early encyclopedia, as well as commentaries on the Scriptures and on the Celestial Hierarchy of Pseudo-Dionysius. The edition of Hugh's work by the canons of Saint-Victor (1648) was reprinted in J.-P. Migne's Patrologiae Cursus Completus (Series Latina), 1844–64.From https://www.britannica.com/biography/Hugh-of-Saint-Victor. A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - Cardinal Wilton Gregory of Washington has reportedly withdrawn permission for a solemn pontifical Mass that was to be offered on August 14 in D-C . The cardinal reportedly cited the pope's recent motu proprio, restricting the Traditional Latin Mass . A pontifical Mass is celebrated by a bishop in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. The Mass was to take place at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, in honor of the Solemnity of the Assumption. Cardinal Gregory has otherwise not yet applied the motu proprio to his archdiocese. The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland issued a formal directive requiring that full abortion services are available in the region by March of 2022. Catholic bishops, including the Primate of All Ireland, are lamenting the directive as unjust and gravely disquieting. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, but abortion law is considered to be a devolved issue under the control of the Northern Ireland Assembly. But due to the suspension of the regional government, the British parliament decriminalized abortion in Northern Ireland in October 2019, and obliged the U-K government to create legal access to abortion in the region. A new report shows the toll of the coronavirus pandemic on the Church in Mexico. The report suggests Mexico has lost five bishops, more than 230 priests, and fifteen religious men or women during the pandemic. The Archdiocese of Guadalajara has been the hardest hit, with 25 priests who have died. Today the Church remembers one of its earliest popes - Saint Victor the First. Victor was pope from 189 to 199. He is most famous for decreeing that Easter be universally celebrated on a Sunday. He may have died from martyrdom.

Clairborne & Saint-Victor about how their unique backgrounds in medicine have led them to create this transformational retreat. Dr. Clairborne relates how her early career experiences led her to burnout and to almost take her own life before discovering her own path. Dr. Saint-Victor talks about how immigrant parental pressure guided his early career in medicine and caused his own internal struggles around identity, and cultural, and familial expectations. Dr. Clairborne practices integrative medicine and has training in acupuncture, coaching, neurolinguistic programming, hypnotherapy and focuses primarily on getting to the root of people's problems and not just focusing on clinical symptoms. Through this process she helps people change their behavior to be able to change their lives and outcomes. Dr. Saint-Victor has a background in psychiatry and computer programming and has a long-standing fascination with the way a computer works, juxtaposed with how the human brain works. With this background he helps physicians use mental models to create an identity that is not just wrapped up in being a physician. The Mind Re-Mapping and Manifestation Retreat – Change cannot occur until your thought process changes. Removing self doubt, imposter syndrome, the same obstacles reappearing over and over again in your life, defining and reaching fulfillment in your life, and how to remove the blind spots that may be holding you back are all areas that will be tackled during this retreat. How does the pattern of being a physician affect how we view the world and interact with others? And does that in some ways limit us? During this retreat you will - 1) Reconnect with yourself 2) Get clarity on what you want out of life 3) Act towards your goals and eliminate your fears 4) Reconnect and discover your deepest values 5) Remove the negative thoughts and negative self-talk 6) Increase your performance in your given arena 7) Decrease your incidence of self-sabotage 8) Begin to operate within your purpose 9) Take away the tools to maintain the transformation you've just undergone Come and enjoy a beautiful resort as well Books mentioned in this episode – https://thephysiciansroad.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Screenshot-77.png () https://amzn.to/37hsufJ (Psycho-Cybernetics)https://amzn.to/37hsufJ (https://amzn.to/37hsufJ) The Mind Re-Mapping & Manifestation Retreat Chateau ElanFebruary 1st. 2020https://gegkoacw.pages.infusionsoft.net/ (Register here:)https://gegkoacw.pages.infusionsoft.net/ (https://gegkoacw.pages.infusionsoft.net) The Physicians Road where you create your life in Medicine On your Own Terms Join Our Facebook Grouphttps://www.facebook.com/groups/thephysiciansroad/ (www.facebook.com/groups/thephysiciansroad/)
SHOW NOTES: This week next level physician entrepreneur Dr. Mani & I back again, and this time we are talking about our upcoming Mind Re-Mapping & Manifestation Retreat February 1st, 2020. Highlights from the conversation: Many times we are in the world of doing, however, transforming one’s life happens from the space of “being” There has to be a balance of the two [being and doing] to have the highest level of results If you are not honoring your values, it leads to cognitive dissonance, which has the potential to lead to dissatisfaction, unfulfillment, and ultimately burnout. We have blind spots, and that is why sometimes we continue to hit the same walls over and over no matter how many different ways we try to spin it. Getting to the root cause of what is in our way requires another vantage point as we don’t have “eyes in the back of our heads” Early Bird is extended through Christmas! reportage à l'Amassada, dans la commune de St Victor, dans le sud de l'Aveyron.
Show Notes : Click here to Kinski photo from Nighbreed Chronicles 1. Nicko Vince as Kinski. From The Nightbreed Chronicles:”It was Saint-Victor's Dissolution (a cure for the psychosis of appearance) that transformed Leon Kinski from Natural to Breed. In pursuit of a woman who rejected his looks, Kinski used Saint-Victor's compound, which – so rumour went – allowed the user to reconfigure his features as imagination willed. In the fugue state the drug induced, however, he wandered out to gaze at the crescent moon, and it was that image his softening features took as inspiration. He attempted suicide by throwing himself into the Seine. He claims he drowned there, and rose to the surface the following night, when the moon rose. This is most likely nonsense. The Seine simply washed him up alive. He was thereafter cleansed of all desire, except for the moon, in the faces of which, he will say, he can see al his lusts made chilly perfection.” – Photo by Murray Close. 2.
