It's my 200th episode of the Creative Magic Club podcast!! To celebrate, I'm pulling back the curtain on what it's really taken to sustain a business I love for the past 7 years, and to consistently publish a podcast for 4 years. In this week's episode I cover:What it really takes to build a 6-figure online brand without burning out. I share how I have cultivated daily devotion and follow through (and considerably improved my abilities as an ADHD-brained creative!) I'll give you a clue: it has required keeping things SO SIMPLE, while learning to become more comfortable with complexity. I share how it has been about following my intuition, and building the skill of listening to myself, that led me to the strategy of selling high ticket coaching. A super smart that has sustained me financially as I grow my audience, brand and impact. I share how I came to the conclusion that the one thing that's always top priority for reaching my goals is…. content!! I love to write, create and connect, so I chose to build my buA 12 week money mindset group coaching program for multi-passionate creative entrepreneurs who are ready to create your next 6-figures in your soul work by choosing to heal your money mindset, stop settling for less or making choices out of fear & make the moves to make 6-figures in your dream business NOW.https://withsarahmac.com/create-money/ When you book my Cosmic Sales Intensive, You'll walk away with a full, clear, compelling, sales page for your high ticket offer that will attract ready to buy clients and that you can continue to make sales with for years to come. This week we talk with Amberlee Rich from Idaho. Former art teacher turned homeschool mom and financial coach, Amberlee walks us through what made her decide to homeschool her children. Have you ever felt your child was not safe when you dropped them off at school?? Amberlee tells us about that experience.Soon after feeling unsafe in the school system, Amberlee's daughter was diagnosed with MIS-C, a Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C). It is a rare condition associated with SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) that usually occurs 2-6 weeks after a child is infected with SARS-CoV-2. MIS-C causes different internal and external body parts to become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal tract. After Amberlee's daughter's diagnosis, she knew home was the best place for her kids. We talk about the importance of teaching financial literacy to our children starting at an early age and how you can incorporate it into your everyday homeschooling life (no extra curriculum needed!)Amberlee explains how she juggles teaching two kids at different levels, and how she picks the books they read. Are you wondering- how has homeschooling been going for ME?? Oh goodness- you don't want to miss this! I ask Amberlee how she handles the situation when her kids just want to be crazy and not pay attention to that pesky ol' school work, and her response is SO SIMPLE! We discuss, "Is homeschooling for everyone?" and when it might not be for you. You can contact Amberlee by emailin Amberlee@richlivingcoaching.comSchedule a free Q&A Session with Amberlee to see how financial coaching can help you. Here are her social media links:TikTokFacebookInstagramWould you like to help keep this podcast going by sending me a small tip?paypal.me/TheHomeschoolHowToUnable to support the show monetarily but want to help me out in another way?No Problem! The daily habit of taking the time to check in with yourself and ask these key questions is SO SIMPLE yet SO POWERFUL, but many of us aren't making the time to pause to prioritize investing some time in our needs and well-being (even for just 5 minutes). Over and over again, we prioritize the needs of others (our employers, managers, co-workers, etc.) and we're left with little to no time to give to ourselves. The simple habit of checking in with myself every day was the start of the beautiful snowball effect that led me to leave my 9-to-5 and pursue a more fulfilling and purpose-based life. What could it do for you? Join me inside to find out! Why does ChatGPT matter?* People always get excited about AI advances and this one is accessible in a way that others weren't in the past.* People can use natural language to prompt a natural language response.* It's seductive because it feels like synthesis.* And it can feel serendipitous. But…* We need to remember that ChatGPT and all other generative AI are tools and they can fail us.* While it may feel serendipitous, that serendipity is more constrained than it may feel. Some other ideas we cover:* The research at Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Apple gives us some context for evaluating how special ChatGPT actually is and what might be ahead.* The current craze about prompt engineering. What we're reading:* Raghuveer Parthasarathy's So Simple a Beginning* Don Norman's Design for a Better World* Jamer Hunt's Not to Scale* Ann Pendleton-Jullian & John Seely Brown's Design UnboundIf you enjoy our podcasts, please subscribe and leave a positive rating or comment. This week's episode is based upon an email from Cookie about Walk Your AS Off. This a fun way for you to help spread awareness of Axial Spondyloarthritis. Here is the text from Cookie's February 9th email:Today I joined Walk Your AS Off! I miss being a part of something. I miss working towards a goal, hell who am I kidding I miss being inspired to even have a goal!I have wanted to participate for a long time, but life and I got in the way. Plus, I didn't have it in me to be committed to anything or anyone and I damn sure didn't want to let my team or anyone down.I mean honestly how much of a difference would my 1000 plus steps a month make? Well? A lot to be honest not only to myself but to my team and to the goal of reaching Mars. One step at a time, all of us working together. You see I have spent most my life missing out because I didn't think I would do it perfectly or I would be an embarrassment or let people down especially myself. I am never going to run a marathon or hell even crawl one. But I can be a part of something and enjoy being involved and excited about goals being met! No matter how big or small they maybe, they still matter. My only goal at this moment is just to remember to keep up with my steps and hopefully I will be able to make the goals of going one step further each day. What I love most about Walk Your AS Off is that for one it is free! Who doesn't love “free!” I am not pressured to donate any money or time unless I want to. I can join or stop at any time! I love the fact that I have NO GOAL TO SET OR MAKE! I love the fact that I am the only one who is setting the goal for myself and that no one knows that goal but me! I am under no obligation I can do it if I want to or not! I don't have to be a walker, runner or in any certain type of shape. I just got to be ME! And I can do that! AND the greatest thing is getting to meet new people and hopefully make lasting friendships! I know I have.I think it is about 2000 steps to make a mile. I figured with any luck I will manage that in one week! Heck maybe even 2023 steps! I have always been a goal maker, which set me up for failure or not even giving myself a chance to try. Because I wanted to be perfect or the best at everything I did. I missed out on a lot. Ankylosing Spondylitis has taken a lot away from me, more than you will ever know but one thing I have gained with this disease is learning to have compassion for myself. I try to remind myself my best is my best. Period. It may not look like anyone else's best or what others think it should look like, but I know I am doing the best that I can and that is enough for me.So, today I begin tracking my steps! I am really curious to see what they are, to be honest I am excited about doing this. I joined The Blue Apple team because I do not have it in me to be a team captain plus I wanted to be a part of a team, a community. Working together to encourage each other and reassure each other that our best is our best and together we can do this!I was dreading signing up because I struggle with technology, but it was SO SIMPLE!!!!!!!!!!!! My username is Cookie! Original right! Oh, and I asked if my family could use ONE EMAIL and ONE username to give me their steps because they do not want to have to remember to log in and do it. AND THEY CAN! So, I have a few members who are going to text me every Sunday (I think) their steps and then I will add them to the site. (Damn almost sounds like a team captain)I hope you will consider joining us in making our goal to Mars and raising awareness! Thank you for your time. I would love to publicly thank Jenna Dye Visscher for her vision and her determination to create such a wonderful community and project for all of us. Please check out the link below!Hope to see you soon!Cookie

What's up my Kate's Take listeners! I'm thrilled to be here with you today! Today is day 11 of 100. If you've never heard of time-blocking, then I'm ready to rock your world today! First, let's call on our 5 questions. These questions are the bookends to your day - answer 1 and 2 in the morning, and 3 - 5 at night. What's one thing I'm grateful for? What's one thing I'll accomplish today that will bring me one step closer to my goal? What's something that's working well for me right now? What's something that's not working well for me right now? How can I either solve what's not working right now, or get rid of it? ANYONE can time block. This concept is SO SIMPLE. But here's the thing: you have to be disciplined in order to stick with it. Because distractions are everywhere, and it's easy to jump from 1 thing to the next … bouncing around the internet until your day is over – and you have little to show for it. You know you were busy, but what did you actually accomplish? I hope today's episode all about time-blocking came at just the right time for you. As always, don't hesitate to reach out to me and share your wins - and your struggles. I'm kate@eofire.com or katelerickson on Instagram. Have you heard about the Five Keys of Unbound? If so, well you are going to love this episode about going deeper with the Keys. If not, you'll still in for a wonderful treat. The Five Keys are simple responses to the good news that help us to cooperate with God's grace. Each key helps us to access this grace and unlock the door to greater freedom. The first three keys, Repentance and Faith, Forgiveness, and Renunciation, are about responding to the gospel. Those keys are about turning to Jesus and expressing faith, and more deeply experiencing the power of His kingdom released into our hearts. Then the last two keys are Authority and The Father's Blessing. These are really about the ministry of the Holy Spirit. These keys work intimately together to both give expression to a person's heart as they cooperate with what God's doing, but also to proclaim the good news over a person's life. These keys are SO SIMPLE, yet SO DEEP. Every time we minister to someone, we learn something new along the way!Join Matt and Jenn as they take us Deeper with the Keys and get into the layers of repentance, the less obvious need for forgiveness, and the power of revelation in renunciation. Listen as they dive into learning not only about blessing a person's identity, purpose, and destiny, but taking it further by blessing areas in their lives that have been discouraged, hidden, or cursed. Whether you are new to Unbound or have been leading ministry sessions for years, you will hear some profound insight and beautiful testimonies, and you'll be inspired along the way.Renunciation ListA Ring on Our Finger podcast The Overview of the Five Keys talkLeadership Conference informationVisit our websiteFind upcoming eventsSupport the mission of Heart of the Father!Your donation directly supports and enables our evangelizing mission. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.Give online or call us at 610-952-3019 to change lives today!Find us on FacebookFollow us on InstagramExplore with us on TwitterRelease: September 2022Music by Christian Harper.Artwork by Rosemary Strohm at Command-S.

The form and function of a sprinting cheetah are quite unlike those of a rooted tree. A human being is very different from a bacterium or a zebra. The living world is a realm of dazzling variety, yet a shared set of physical principles shapes the forms and behaviors of every creature in it. So Simple a Beginning: How Four Physical Principles Shape Our Living World (Princeton UP, 2022) shows how the emerging new science of biophysics is transforming our understanding of life on Earth and enabling potentially lifesaving but controversial technologies such as gene editing, artificial organ growth, and ecosystem engineering. Raghuveer Parthasarathy explains how four basic principles—self-assembly, regulatory circuits, predictable randomness, and scaling—shape the machinery of life on scales ranging from microscopic molecules to gigantic elephants. He describes how biophysics is helping to unlock the secrets of a host of natural phenomena, such as how your limbs know to form at the proper places, and why humans need lungs but ants do not. Parthasarathy explores how the cutting-edge biotechnologies of tomorrow could enable us to alter living things in ways both subtle and profound. Featuring dozens of original watercolors and drawings by the author, this sweeping tour of biophysics offers astonishing new perspectives on how the wonders of life can arise from so simple a beginning. In this episode, Xavier Bonilla has a dialogue with Raghuveer Parthasarathy about four basic principles of the living world. They define what is the hybrid discipline of biophysics and why he chose the four physical laws he lays out in his book. They discuss the mechanics of self-assembly, regulatory circuits, browning motion, predictive randomness, and scale. They provide an overview of genes and discuss sheaths, helices, histones and how they contribute to humans genetic makeup. They also discuss lipids, gut microbiome, CRISPR, and many other topics. Raghuveer Parthasarathy is a physics professor at the University of Oregon where he studies biophysics, lipid membranes, and multicellular structures. He holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Chicago and is the Senior Research Scientist at the University of Oregon. Pat reads the Declaration of Independence. Then, Peter Serefine, host of Liberty Lighthouse joins Pat to talk about his new book "So Simple, Even a Politician Can Understand."
Get ready for a jam-packed episode of The Breakdown! Today we welcome three different guests to discuss various social and geopolitical situations that are of great importance to everyone.Imagine losing your spouse, a loved one, or family member while they were performing duties deemed "essential" during the COVID-19 pandemic, only to find out that they are not valued as they should be after death. What's worse, you find that the county won't pay you the pension for which your spouse worked. That is the fight our first guest has been having for the better part of a year. Maureen Ennor Rocha lost her husband, Alameda County Sheriff's Deputy Oscar Rocha after he contracted COVID-19 while working in the county jail system. Since then, she has been denied his pension and not given assistance from the police charities. Maureen has not only been fighting for her husband's hard work to be honored, but has found a network of other law enforcement widows who are struggling with the same situation.Today, we help expose the injustice and bring to light to the fact that police officers who contracted and died from COVID-19 are not considered losing their lives in the line of duty. If you or anyone you know has been suffering through this, please reach out to Maureen on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/maureen.ennor) and she will help you get your story out. You can also reach out to the show by emailing breakdradio@protonmail.com or through all the socials of the show, found here: https://breakdradio.contactin.bio/. The next guest on the show is no stranger to broadcasting. Peter Serefine hosts “Liberty Lighthouse” on MoJo 5-0 on Saturdays at 8:00 PM EST. Peter drops by to talk about his new book, “So Simple, Even A Politician Can Understand: Simple Ideas For Seemingly Complex Politcal Issues.” In this book, Peter puts forth some ideas that would greatly simplify government. Politics does not have to be complicated and convoluted. We The People have to find people willing to put forth simple ideas again. This book is examples of simple ideas that would go a long way to solving some big problems. We break down the book and talk about Peter's show. For more information on Peter, head over to https://www.liberty-lighthouse.com/.Our third and final guest is Joel Skousen is the publisher of the World Affairs Brief--a weekly internet news analysis service. For by Grace we are saved through faith and not of ourselves, a Gift of God, not of works, so that we cannot boast. Our salvation is by faith alone, nothing else. SAVED by FAITH. Not by religious observance, tradition or any ordinances of the Church, or by what we have done. We are SAVED by FAITH IN CHRIST! We receive salvation as a free gift! A GIFT! And like every gift, you can accept or refuse. It’s SO SIMPLE. Salvation is GIVEN to us! A GIFT from GOD OUR FATHER, and we receive it THROUGH CHRIST!
Hey you.Simple, yet deeply PROFOUND letter today, okay? One sentence has changed my life, and I think it might change yours too. “What would this look like if it were EASY?”That one question, as simple as it may seem, really is life changing. I stole it from the classic book by Tim Ferris, “The Four Hour Work Week.”For the last year and a half, I’ve been asking myself that before every single decision I make, and the rewards have been PRICELESS.Now, I know what you’re thinking, because it’s exactly what I thought when I first started using this tactic….Random “sayings” started to go through my head like…“If it was easy everyone would do it….”“you get what you pay/work for”“a hard day’s work is an honest day’s work..”You’ve heard them all…And they really are roadblocks to using this LIFE CHANGING sentence…Because the “Easy Route” has such a TABOO in our culture!I mean seriously! It’s almost a curse word!Success is supposed to be hard, isn’t it!?It’s supposed to be all “blood, sweat and tears” for YEARS, and THEN you get your reward!I 100% bought into this, as a division 1 basketball player, it was 100% true. If you didn’t put in the work? It wasn’t going to happen for you, plain and simple. So it was even harder for me to get my head around this sentence, even though the legendary Tim Ferris swore by it…“What would this look like if it were EASY?”Real quick, before we get to how to actually USE this sentence effectively, let me explain why it WORKS. I think it comes back to that 80/20 rule, or even the “Power Law” that I’ve discussed in MANY of my other letters. Basically, both of these rules state that a SMALL number of your actions ACTUALLY DETERMINE your success or failure, and the rest is just noise. So while working hard is definitely admirable, this rule clearly proves (with thousands of examples that I’m sure you’ve seen in your own life) that all hard work isn’t created equal. It’s only the hard work CONCENTRATED and FOCUSED on the things that REALLY MATTER that makes a difference. And it’s this principle that so elegantly DRIVES the success of the “Easy” rule….The “Easy” rule, as I’m naming it right now, is SO SIMPLE.Before every task, every decision (and DEFINITELY before IMPORTANT decisions) you must STOP and ask yourself, “What would this look like if it were EASY?”Like I said above, all these negative thoughts will come at you.You will feel super lazy, like you’re trying to “get out of something”.You need to ignore that feeling and press on. The key to it being EASY is that it STRIPS AWAY ALL THE USELESS STUFF. All the useless tasks? All the random “effort” and “striving” that you could JUMP TO without thinking? It gets rid of that.Making something honestly easy strips it down to the bare essentials, and gets you MAXIMUM results for MINIMUM effort.I don’t want to harp on this too long, because this is one of those things that you really need to TRY to experience the power of it. It sounds so dumb, but if you actually focus in, take the time to THINK before acting, and take the EASIEST, most EFFICIENT path….You will feel more peace. You will feel more in control. And you will have more TIME than you know what to do with. Here’s some quick examples of how I’ve used this powerfully. Problem = “I don’t know who to hire as my head of advertising. It’s probably the #1 most important hire in our company. If I get it wrong, we lose hundreds of thousands of dollars….”“What would this look like if it were easy?”Answer: Hire 3 top candidates at the same time. Pay more money up front but virtually guarantee that we find a winner within one month. Problem solved. Problem = I don’t know what topics people would like to hear about most for the Kale letter….“What would this look like if it were easy?”Answer: do a quick email survey and ask people what they want to hear about… write about the most common responses.Problem = I don’t have time to pursue X, or Y, or Z, I’m worried that it will affect my main business or focus…“What would this look like if it were easy?”Answer: Either avoid it altogether, or hire a CEO of that project and leave it up to them. Give them 1 month to pass or fail the project then decide what to do from there.See? This can be applied to literally anything (I just picked a few business examples off the top of my head…)Your marriage…Your relationships…Your company…Your task at work…Your long term goals…Ask yourself that ONE question at least 5 times each day for the next week. And then come back to this letter and let me know in the comments if it worked for you :)If you found this interesting, feel free to forward this email to 10 people who it would help. Thank you so much!KaleP.S. still running this special for 30 days of free access to this letter, take advantage while you can! 100% free zero payment if you don’t like it. Lisa Thal is an Author, Speaker, and Business Coach. She wrote the book "Three Word Meetings." A Simple Strategy to Engage, Inspire, and Empower Your Team. Lisa coaches leaders on how to take their sales and business meetings to the next level with fun and interesting 3-word topics to get your sales team motivated and inspired. She has over 33 years of marketing and leadership experience. Episode 075 - Why everyone company needs SAM! I realized in my 33 years of marketing and sales that every company needs a SAM Plan. I know many of you are in sales and what you have to communicate or develop for your customer is that having a better SAM could be the difference to having a profitable year. Visualize this, we have products/ services on the left, and far-right is revenue and profits. What is in the middle is what I call a Bridge. This bridge is a marketing strategy that creates the opportunity to gain more market share and sales. Think about the products you use today. The car you drive, the toothpaste you use, the shampoo, the coffee or alcoholic beverage you consume, the clothes you wear, and your cell phone use. All influenced by SAM. So what's the best way to create your SAM and make sure your bridge leads you to more sales and profits? Here are four strategies to create a better SAM. Become a problem solver. Marketing is all about solving someone's pain or providing pleasure and providing better customer solutions than your competition. Solve a problem for the consumer. McDonald's is solving several issues. People that need food fast and for a fair price. They have found a way to market to you to consider them when you're hungry and need food fast. Let's think about what you and your company can solve for the consumer. What problem are you solving for your current clients? Ask your best client the top one or two reasons they chose to work with your company. They may share some insights you can use to position when calling on other like-minded companies. Whose problem are you solving? I will ask most companies I work with tell me more about who you would like to do business with. They respond to everyone. In marketing, we call that a Family reunion. Most companies want to target everyone, but they have to have the resources to do it effectively. So start with targeting a brother or sister, that owns a home, has kids. See, not everyone has a marketing budget like McDonald's to target everyone? That's okay; let's narrow the focus to start to own the consumer that may be more profitable. Tell me more about them? Who are your current customers that you retain year over year? You want more of the Life Time customers, not just the cut my price customers. Make your message matter. How that consumer hears and processes your message is critical. You have to break out of the noise and have your message heard. If you can enter into the conversation already going on into their minds, you have a better chance of converting them your way. Keep your message simple. You know I am a fan of using three words. McDonald's uses simple phrases, I'M Lovin It. Nike, Just Do It. So Simple and impactful. Measure the results. It's crucial to track SAM. Does SAM need to help build more brand awareness? Do we want SAM to increase website traffic? Store traffic? Do you want SAM to bring you referrals? We have to measure the results that SAM is delivering. Our job is to teach our clients the road map on how best to use SAM - Better Sales and Marketing! Remember when you call on new clients, there are only two reasons they should meet with you. You are going to validate what they are currently doing? Or You have a way to improve what they are doing. Hello SAM! If you like this podcast, make sure you rate it; if you think someone could benefit from this episode, share it, or subscribe at Itunes or Spotify, so you don't miss out on the next three-word podcast.
Hey Listenerland! It's time for Everything, Anything, and Nothing Really. This week, we have special guest Scotty Pepperoni from the Cool Dads Club Podcast joining us to joke around and have some fun. Did you know that scallions are actually onions? Scotty fills us in. After that, we talk about a possible 51st state, and talk about the original 14th state we never got - Frankland. It was originally a part of what would eventually become Tennessee that North Carolina didn't want. It would have been the perfect place for a Frank Sinatra Theme Park. Finally, the guys talk about cities that have had name changes over the years. Did you know there is a town called Truth or Consequences? Orlando, Florida was almost named Orlando's Grave. Not the best choice for a town filled with theme parks. We cap the episode with a song by Ray Torres called So Simple. Enjoy!
Today’s lesson is 895 words, a 3 min 34 sec reading time. Subscribe here.📍 IntroductionOne of the great inventions for home chefs in the past few decades has been the bag of prewashed lettuce. It’s convenient, well packaged, easy to grab and go - and doesn’t need washing. With that said, there are some downsides to using bagged lettuce as the base of your salad. For one, the greens are typically stale by the time they arrive in your fridge. They were picked, processed, and usually placed on the shelves quite a while ago. This makes the leaves wilt & lose flavor. Unfortunately, no amount of dressing can rescue wilted, flavorless greens. Furthermore, since salads are served raw, you can’t use heat to develop the flavor. This means the taste and texture of the ingredients matter more. With lettuce, you want to introduce sweet, spicy, or bitter flavors. You also want a little crunch for textural variety. To get this, you typically need to invest a tiny bit of work into your greens. While it is more complicated than ripping open a bag of lettuce, it pays off. Once you get used to the rhythm of prepping greens, you will likely rarely go back. 📝 Notes, Tips & Tricks: Selection: If you have access to a farmer’s market, the greens there will be freshest and most in season (picked right at peak vs. earlier to account for shipping time) The most common type of lettuce is “basic” or “all-purpose.” They are mild in flavor and a bit crisp (e.g., romaine, iceberg, baby arugula) Softer lettuces: baby spinach, bibb, little gem, spring mix & delicate herbs (e.g., basil, mint, cilantro) Crispier lettuces: cabbage, chard, kale, spinach Peppery: arugula, endive, frisée, radicchioWhen selecting, look for tightly formed heads, unblemished, crisp leaves, lack of brown or yellow spots or bruisingIf the head is droopy, skipA few brown spots aren’t going to make or break the salad - you can always cut them out Washing & Drying: Lettuce grows close to the soil so often has sand, dirt, & grit between the leaves. The goal of washing is to remove that debris so you don’t eat it. Biting down & feeling sand between your teeth is quite unpleasant. Wash your greens as soon as you get home so they can revive & rehydrate while soaking in the cold water. Alternatively, just do this when you have a few extra minutes in the kitchen. If you don’t have time to clean them right away, revive the greens before washing (e.g., soak them in some cold water). To wash, fill a large bowl with cold water and submerge the leaves, swishing them around. Let the dirt settle to the bottom, gently lift the greens, and dump the water. Repeat until no sand is coming out.Try not to direct concentrated spray from the water nozzle onto the leaves as it can bruise them. For a more thorough wash, chop or tear the leaves before washing. To dry quickly, use a salad spinner & work in batches to avoid crushing/bruising the leaves. If you don’t have a spinner, gently blot the leaves with a clean kitchen towel or lay them flat to dry. You can also use the pillow-case method.Wash & dry lettuce in advance of cooking for relaxed salad prep (1-2 hrs allows time to dry) Storage: Store washed leaves in a damp towel (a paper towel works too) and place them inside a plastic bag (a clean produce bag from the grocery store works well). We love reusable silicone bags like these. Plastic bags trap moisture & gasses that speed up the decay process. Ensure salad can breathe (e.g, don’t seal shut). Store greens with a slightly damp towel, and ideally inside the “crisper drawer.” Salad greens wilt at room temperature, so keep them in the fridge where it’s cool and moist. The moisture helps keep the greens crisp & fluffy. Washed & dried lettuce can stay in the fridge for ~ 3 -7 days, making it ideal for prepping ahead. You can trim away oxidized ends or conceal them with a creamier dressing. Store greens and lettuces separately from toppings and dressings to ensure nothing gets soggy.Don’t slice crunchy vegetables (e.g., radish, fennel, carrots) in advance as they will lose moisture and go limp. If you must, store (or revive) them in some cold water. Regularly check greens for yellowing, slimy bits, or mold. Cut out those areas and use the produce right away. Rescuing Wilted Greens: Many greens wilt quickly. But this does not mean they are past their prime! Sometimes they are just a bit dried out & can be resuscitated in a few quick minutes. For items with a stem or root (e.g., broccoli, kale), simply slice off the end and prop them up in a bowl or jar of water for about an hour. For items without a root intact (e.g., celery, carrots), cut the items up and submerge in a bowl or dish of water. They can be stored this way for a few days to maintain crispness. For fast lettuce revival, add ice to the water. If after an hour it isn’t reviving it might be time to toss it.Bagged lettuce: cannot be resuscitated. If it smells funky or is yellow/brown, toss it. 🎓 Further Study: Local Food Near You (Farmer’s Market Directory)Salad in Sealed Bags Isn’t So Simple, It Seems (NYTimes) ————-————-————-🎧 Prefer to listen? Welcome to the “Neuroscience Meets SEL” podcast EPISODE #29, my name is Andrea Samadi, a former educator who has been fascinated with understanding the science behind high performance strategies in schools, sports and the workplace for the past 20 years. Let’s dive right into this topic on “How to Re-Wire Your Brain for Happiness and Well-Being to Optimize Learning.” You can watch this episode on YouTube for the visual effects for more impact and learning. I’m sure most of us are aware that stress is the number one cause behind anxiety, depression, low energy, work burn-out, and cardiovascular disease[i], but do you know how stress impacts our brain? Did you know that:Chronic stress and depression causes measurable brain shrinkage?[ii]“51% of us will have a mental health issue (post-traumatic stress, obsessive-compulsive, personality, anxiety, addiction, or an eating disorder to name a few) at some point in their life”[iii] andthat 1/5 students struggle with depression, while ¼ struggle with anxiety which means we have reached epidemic levels with today’s youth. And these shocking statistics impacts society with:Work burn-outAnxiety and DepressionCardiovascular DiseaseNeurological Disorders and eventually leading toDeathAlso Impacting our Students:A recent study[iv] shows that if the educator is stressed, the student will also be stressedStress is impacting our ability to learnStudent behavior was also impacted, contributing to more stress for educatorsDr. Daniel Amen, a psychiatrist and brain disorder specialist of the Amen Clinics[v] and the father of Chloe Amen from podcast #25 with “Strategies to Change Your Brain to Change Your Grades”[vi] explains that “if you struggle with attention, focus, sadness, anxiety, worry, flexibility, stubbornness, or impulsivity, welcome to the club—this is normal.”[vii] These days it is more normal to have a problem, than not have a problem. Most of us will have a mental health issue in our lifetime—and when it happens, we think that we are the only one and that no one else understands. Dr. Amen has a book coming out in March 3, 2020 called “The End of Mental Illness: How Neuroscience is Transforming Psychiatry and Helping Prevent or Reverse Mood and Anxiety Disorders, ADHD, Addictions, PTSD, Psychosis, Personality Disorders and More.”[viii] If left untreated, these brain disorders can have “serious personal, interpersonal, occupational and social consequences.”[ix] In this podcast episode, we are going to look at the neuroscience of happiness, anxiety, stress, learning and retention with some ideas and strategies to naturally improve each area, so that we can get a handle on life’s largest challenges with an understanding of our brain chemistry. Our goal is to intentionally set ourselves up for success with this new level of awareness. We will cover:A reminder of the recipe for peak performance (fun, fear, focus) from episode #27.What’s the neuroscience of happiness—and how to boost our serotonin levels to generate more happiness. What’s the neuroscience of anxiety (our body’s natural response to stress that can become a mental disorder when someone regularly feels unusually high levels of anxiety) and stress (which is our body’s response to a challenge or demand) with strategies to calm our limbic, emotional brain. What’s the neuroscience of learning and how can we be sure that our brain is primed to learn? All of the answers to these questions can be found within the chemistry of our brain and with how active or hard certain parts of the brain are working. The best course I have taken to understand how my own brain is working is Dr. Amen’s Thrive by 25 Online Course[x] where he outlines some of the most common problems he sees within the brain with natural solutions to overcome each challenge. The most interesting fact I found was that diet and exercise were solutions to the most common brain problems he spoke about, (anxiety/depression/emotional issues) so if you are eating healthy, getting enough sleep, taking supplements and exercising, you are on the right track for preventing the most common brain problems. Have you ever thought about your brain with regards to your work, learning, success or productivity? What about your happiness, personal life or relationships? “Your brain controls everything that you do, so when it works right, you work right.”[xi] It’s only been the past five years for me, where I’ve been learning about the importance of my brain and its health and I’m not surprised that the recent advances in neuroscience have led to an emerging field of educational neuroscience—bringing together researchers in cognitive neuroscience, educational psychology, and technology to create new programs for the classroom. Why not look at the application of these ideas for the workplace and our personal lives as well?Mental health is something that society still doesn’t talk openly about. When I look at my personal family situation, with my 2 parents and 2 sisters and myself—my parents and both of my sisters struggled with depression at one point. You can add me to statistics as I didn’t figure out healthy eating habits until my late 20s when a doctor[xii] recommended I cut sugar out of my diet, (I’m talking about all sugar, including high glycemic fruits) and it completely transformed my life, cleaning up every health issue I had. Although our family didn’t talk about the importance of our mental health growing up, or the importance of diet and exercise (I remember begging my Dad to let me go running in an ice storm because exercise has always been my solution to improve well-being) my Mom taught us about the importance of using our mind to attain our goals. I’m sure no one was surprised when I decided to take move from Toronto (where half the year we dealt with dark, gloomy days and freezing weather) to the sunny, bright and warm climate in Arizona, with year round sunshine and vast mountains for daily exercise, --what research shows combats the most common brain problems. The environment you live in impacts your happiness, but if you don’t have the ability to pick up and move somewhere else, there are many other strategies you can incorporate to boost your mood, which is turn will boost your results. As a kid, I also wondered if helping my parents more with tidying the house would help offset some of their stress, but I know now, that there was much more involved with what was happening to them than just needing help with housework. Understanding the chemistry of our brain, and what brain type[xiii] we have is important, and then we can look for strategies to help promote our brain and body health for optimal results in our life.NOTE: Look up and take Dr. Amen’s Brain Type Assessment[xiv] to get an idea of what type of brain you have. You will receive an email with a video explaining your brain type, characteristics of this type of brain, dietary suggestions for your specific brain type and a full report with your brain fit score. My Brain Fit Score was 82/100 and Brain Type 1 and I’m fully aware of the areas I can improve on. The dietary suggestions were also right on the mark for me. Awareness is the key so that we can take action for these improvements to occur. Try it out!Remember the Neuroscience of Success: Dopamine, Noradrenaline, Acetyl Choline (Fun, Fear, and Focus)In our podcast #27 with Friederike Fabritius, we covered the DNA of success or peak performance[xv] which is that brain state where we lose the presence of time and are the most productive. She mentioned the importance of having fun with your work, releasing the neurotransmitter dopamine, having just enough fear or a challenge to release the neurotransmitter noradrenaline and that with these two factors, focus will occur, and the neurotransmitter acetyl choline will be released. These three factors must be in place for peak performance to occur and when we hit this level of performance, it’s important that we are able to manage our distractions so that we can stay here for as long as possible for those higher levels of productivity.Throughout the episodes on this podcast, I’ve been focused on finding those leaders who are doing important work in the field of social emotional learning and neuroscience—to show how these two emerging fields can impact our cognitive abilities. It’s clear that people are drawn to this work, not just in schools, but this understanding has implications in different areas of society like economics, law and security.[xvi] It’s interesting to see how understanding how our minds and brains work in addition to self-awareness is spreading around the world as more and more people are looking for solutions to life’s challenges from within. I also noticed that listeners to this podcast are increasing rapidly as we now are in over 42 countries. I do appreciate the feedback and support for these ideas, and it does help me to hear what you think as we move ahead. Each of these episodes are currently being transcribed and will be released as my next book. What is the Neuroscience of Happiness? Increase Serotonin with that 5:1 Ratio of Positives to NegativesWe all want to experience happiness, and there is a neuroscience to happiness. Dr. Rick Hanson, a neuropsychologist and New York Times Best Selling author, is one of the leading experts in the neuroscience of happiness. In the 2019 Mindful Peace Summit, he opened his session by explaining that he got into the work of mindfulness and began searching for answers to the neuroscience of happiness because in his youth he “wondered why people were so unhappy, including himself. He wanted to be less lonely, and more proud of himself”[xvii] and recalled that most of his childhood consisted of feeling “less than” others so he grew up lacking confidence in himself. If we don’t get the acceptance we needed growing up, that will translate into an emptiness that lingers in your mindset and will impact our future performance. Dr. Hanson explains that if you want to be more confident, you must “embrace experiences that bring out your confidence.”[xviii] We see many young people, like the successful podcaster Lewis Howes,[xix] (Who does The School of Greatness Podcast)[xx] who were bullied as a kid, turn to boxing or wrestling as a way to fight back and gain this confidence back.Dr. Hanson noticed in college that when he ignored how he was feeling, he just kept feeling bad about himself, but when he had a positive experience, and stayed with it, over time he was able to build more positive experiences than negative, building up his confidence. He explains that “neurons that fire together, wire together” and he was actually rewiring his brain from being insecure and negative, to confident and positive. We also know that you can “name it to tame it”[xxi] and when you are able to express what you are feeling, these feelings and emotions become manageable. There is also the negativity bias to be aware of where the brain must have at least a ratio of 5:1 positive to negative interactions so that the negative interaction won’t cause an impact. As parents, teachers, coaches and co-workers we must remember that when giving someone feedback, we must have at least five positive things to say to every one negative thing since “good experiences bounce off the brain like Teflon and bad experiences stick to the brain, like Velcro.”[xxii] Be sure to consciously focus on the positive experiences so you won’t let that one negative experience stick around, or it will impact your mindset and future results.Remember: The brain has mood chemicals called neurotransmitters that are “chemical messengers sent into the synapse (of a neuron) by an electrical charge in the axon, released at the synaptic gap to communicate with dendrites of another neuron, impacted heavily by exercise, and nutrition. Levels of the different neurotransmitters have a profound effect on emotion, perception, memory, alertness, and energy.”[xxiii] If you are someone who enjoys intense exercise, you will notice the benefits of endorphins that are released in the brain and reduce our perception of pain. Researchers are still not sure what causes us to have chemical imbalances in the brain, when we don’t feel right, there are some things we can do to change the chemistry of our brain. STRATEGIES TO INCREASE HAPPINESS and NATURUALLY INCREASE YOUR SEROTININ LEVELSEmbrace experiences that bring out your confidence. Do you know what makes you happy? This takes self-awareness. Do you know what makes other people happy? Do you ask them? Learn more about other by saying “Hey, how’s it going today?” and listen to what they say. Taking this extra step will strengthen your relationship with your co-workers, friends or relationship.Remember the 5:1 negativity bias and say at least five positives to every one negative piece of feedback since good experiences bounce off the brain like Teflon and bad experiences stick to the brain like Velcro.Remember that “neurons that fire together wire together,”[xxiv] so stay with the positive feelings more and eventually the negative ones will fade away since neurons that are out of psych, fail to link.Think of news ways to “generate”[xxv] happiness and start practices that make you feel happier and better about yourself. It really is our responsibility to generate our own happiness. No one can do this for you.Diet and nutrition, supplements and exercise are also important to boost serotonin levels, increasing happiness naturally. You can take “saffron supplements, 5 HTP, exercise, eat low glycemic, healthy carbs (hummus/berries), and keep your gut healthy with probiotics.” [xxvi] The Neuroscience of Anxiety: Calming the Basal Ganglia Within our Limbic System, our emotional brain, is the Basal Ganglia that when revved high, makes us feel anxious. Do you know the difference between anxiety (our body’s natural response to stress that can become a mental disorder when someone regularly feels unusually high levels of anxiety) or stress (which is our body’s response to a challenge or demand)? Some anxiety is normal, and the same goes for stress. We know there are 3 levels of stress response.POSITIVE: Brief increase in heart rate, mild elevations in stress hormone levels (what happens when we need to speak in front of a crowd, play a sport, take a test, or that nervous energy we feel before a job interview).TOLERABLE: Serious, temporary stress responses, buffered by supportive relationships. The key is to have support systems in place for this type of stress.TOXIC: Prolonged activation of stress response systems in the absence of protective relationships. This is the one we are most concerned about as this type of stress causes the most damage. We must have strategies in place to help us to reduce anxiety and stress so that they don’t interfere with our day to day life.STRAEGIES TO REDUCE ANXIETY AND STRESSExercise, meditation and deep belly breathing to increase oxygen to the brain.Go for a walk outside-research shows that different brain regions are activated when you’re outside. Getting out into the sunshine increases the production of Vitamin D and serotonin—plus it just feels good. If you can’t go outside, look out a window.Zone out-let yourself do nothing for a while and just let your mind wander. Research shows that “creative incubation” happens during mind-wandering. You are more likely to problem-solve successfully if you let your mind wander and then come back to the challenge. Dr. Sriny Pillay writes about the power of the unfocused mind in his most recent book “Tinker, Dabble, Doodle, Try” where you sharpen your ability to think and get things done using your ability to make your mind wander. Flashes of insight and solutions to problems often show up at this time, but we must be willing to allow these breaks.Unplug from technology—silence is good for the brain.Mental imagery—warming images (like a cup of hot chocolate) if you are feeling stressed, or a place that makes you happy (the beach).Dietary supplements like fish oil, magnesium, l theanine (in green tea) and gabba supplements are known to help calm the brain. The Neuroscience of Learning: Acetyl Choline, Dopamine, Serotonin, NoradrenalineAs far as learning, think about this: Why is it that I can forget some words I used to know in French (but haven’t practiced in a few years) but that I will never forget my 6th grade teacher, Mr. Walker, teaching me to play basketball, or doing math equations. Why is it easier for me to learn a second language at age 5 versus age 55?Why do I learn better after a good night’s sleep? Why is my creativity enhanced when I run up and down a mountain before I sit at my desk?If there is a formula for peak performance, (Fun, Fear, Focus), a neuroscience to happiness and anxiety, then there must also be one for learning. Bruce McCandliss, professor in Stanford’s Graduate School of Education and the director of the Stanford Center for Mind, Brain and Computation, believes that brain-imaging technology is revolutionizing the study of educational experiences and their effect on the brain. These brain images are showing new insights in how children are learning to read. He talks about the fact that “when you focus your mind, you actually amplify the circuits in your brain that lead to learning and amplify information processing.”[xxvii] This is something we spoke to Dr. Daniel Siegel[xxviii] about (episode #28) with his “Wheel of Awareness” Meditation. When we are focusing intentionally on something (whether it’s our health, relationships, business or learning) we amplify the information processing and change the structure of the brain in this area. We actually re-wire the brain with the activity we are doing. Remember: Neurons that fire together, wire together and neurons that are out of psych, fail to link. Dr. Siegel mentioned that the research was there to show that this practice improves health in addition to many other benefits.Let’s see if we can take our understanding to the next level with how neuroscience impacts the learning process so we can create more impactful lessons as an educator, thoughtful skill-building drills as a coach, or connect our employees to new ideas and information in an engaging and enjoyable manner.STRATEGIES TO INCREASE LEARNING:USE EMOTION AND FREQUENCY OF USE: To help memories stick and “motivation, cues, context and frequency of use can all affect how accurately you remember something.” [xxix] It’s the reason I remember my 6th grade teacher, and frequency of use is the reason I have forgotten most of the French words I used to know. When learning a new skill, how will you make it memorable?FIND YOUR FOCUS: If you are a teacher who can creatively get your students to somehow “focus” on their work, you will be re-wiring their brain which will lead to learning. Whether it’s putting their finger under each word they read or using a pointer on their finger as they read, however you can get a student to focus on what they are learning, is where the magic happens. If you look at some of the most successful modern workplaces, you will find they have meditation and exercise rooms, dream walls to record vision and goals, plenty of relaxation areas, and of course, a place to grab a cup of tea, water or coffee. Think about starting meetings with a clear intention for the meeting to stay on track and focused on the outcome.MORE HAPPINESS, JOY, LAUGHTER: The brain thrives with happiness, joy and laughter. The more we can create fun with our learning, we have seen with peak performance and flow states, we will be encouraging learning in a way that time will be lost. Remember that the recipe for peak performance includes fun! Major Neurotransmitters that Impact Learning:Acetyl Choline - plays an important role in learning and memory.Dopamine - involved in conscious and emotional response and basis of the brain's natural reward system, associated with positivity.Serotonin – brain balancer, involved in arousal, temperature regulation, sensory perception, regulates melatonin, involved in relaxing, mood, emotions, learning and memory, affected by exercise, eggs, lean meat contains L-tryptophan which helps make serotonin.Norepinephrine/noradrenaline – arousal, involved in fight or flight stress response, metabolic rate, blood pressure, and mood.[xxx]On our next episode with Mark Waldman, we will uncover new brain research documented in Mark’s new book Neurowisdom[xxxi] showing that relaxation, creativity, imagination and intuition are essential for learning and problem solving.Discover how your brain likes to learn (it will surprise you and has nothing to do with what you’ve experienced the classroom) 2. Find out why mind-wandering and daydreaming are essential for psychological health. Right in line with Srinivasan Pillay’s book “Tinker, Dabble, Doodle, Try” that talks about the default network in the brain and the power of “unfocusing” your brain. Mark’s book “Neurowisdom” was the first book to talk about the default network mode and provides many practical examples for using your brain to improve finances, happiness and success. 3. Learn how Brain Network Theory is changing the world of neuroscience…and your health! 4. See what living neurons and networks actually look like.If we can intentionally practice strategies that reduce our stress and anxiety, while increasing our happiness, we will be well on our way to retaining what we are learning. See you next week!ADDITIONAL HELP SUGGESTIONS:These suggestions have been compiled as I am researching these areas to offers ideas, strategies and suggestions to bring more awareness to the topics. Make sure to listen to the entire series, so that you can have those healthy boundaries that allow you to thrive as a modern woman, when there are so many demands on your time and energy. By the end of the series, you’re honestly going to feel like you have so many more tools in your toolbelt to conserve your energy, so that you can channel it towards your creativity and calling on this planet. Because we ain’t got time, to be diddle daddling, OK? We need you to have those boundaries, so that you can function and be a badass. In this minisode on boundaries, I’m going to give you a simple template for saying no. SO SIMPLE you’re going to be like OMG, why did this take so long? LMK ask you this one question – How do you feel when you say yes to something, but you really mean no? Take a few seconds to think about it. What feelings come up when you agree to something you don’t really want to do, or care to do?When I ask most women this, they admit they feel resentful, bitter, annoyed, at the other person and themselves. It’s a radical concept but when you say YES when you mean NO so that you can please someone or not make them upset or because it’s easier, YOU LOSE TRUST IN YOURSELF. You essentially abandon yourself. That’s a big problem. The solution to this is to communicate what you want, to communicate your focus, and communicate your priority. Let’s take a really sticky situation. One of my clients wanted to quit her job forever, but was stalling because she didn’t want to set this boundary – to say no more to this soul-crushing job that was sucking the life out of her. She was scared of her boss’ disappointment, of her parent’s backlash etc. You know the drill. When we drilled down, it became obvious that she was nervous about not finding the right words, or screwing up in the moment, so we wrote out a script that she could practice and role play with her friends and roommates. That made it way easier. Based on the “sandwich” technique, she started and ended on a positive note, and shared her desire for the future as the filling of the sandwich. It looked like this:Positive: I’m grateful that I spent the last two years at this company as I learned so much.Desire: It’s time that I focus on transitioning into design that focuses on social impact and international development.Positive: Again, I want to reiterate that I’ve grown enormously through your guidance and appreciated all the autonomy you’ve given me throughout the years. Notice how she didn’t say NO to the job, but say YES to her focus...to the direction she wanted to move in. You can do this for anything – if someone asks you for your time, energy, or money, instead of saying NO, telling them what you’re saying YES to. I can’t go to Jamaica this year, because I’m focusing on launching my Etsy store. I can’t speak at your event on pickles, because I’m focused on almond milk this year. I can’t donate $100 to your campaign, because I’m donating my funds this year to animal right’s issues. Get it?So clear. Let people know what you care about, and they’ll understand you’re saying no to them, and they’ll respect you for it. They’ll be like dang, this woman knows what she wants. And if they’re pissed and you experience backlash, then fuck em’. That ain’t your problem. Your commitment is to yourself. Go get it, heroine. That’s it, if you care about living an empowered life as a woman on this planet, go follow me on Instagram @majo.heroine more juiciness – and go to my website majo.co and get on my email list for more updates about my work and this podcast. If you have wanted to learn how to make your own delicious dressings for salads from scratch, this is the episode for you! Chef James Barry spills the secrets from the healthy chef kitchen to help you improve your health and lifestyle! In this interview episode you will learn: Why James loves to use asparagus to teach kids Why many chefs touted as “healthy” are actually NOT Why you need to drink plenty of water Hidden calories/sugar in dressings in the store, bad oils, and those chemicals causing havoc in our bodies Just because you eat a salad doesn’t make it healthy Use a mason jar (or any jar that has a lid) to make a 3:1 ratio 3 oil, 1 vinegar or lemon juice (acidic liquid) just shake it and there you are with your most basic, healthy Balsamic Vinaigrette in 3 minutes or less. You can add salt and pepper to balance the taste out and it will feel fresher and your body will receive it easier than a store-bought dressing. 9% of people eat the proper amount of veggies each day — most people don’t eat them because they’re gross. They never learned how to make them appetizing. Salad tastes better when you control the quality of the ingredients Sprinkle smoked salt with lemon and olive oil and it’s SO GOOD and SO SIMPLE 3-5 products good to keep in your home for salad dressings and salads Get the Power Foods Lifestyle Starter Kit: Recipes, Methodology, and Starter Meal Plan here: www.PowerFoodsLifestyle.com About James: James Barry’s culinary career started as a private chef. THE BEST BITS IN A SILLIER PACKAGE (from Friday's Mike Hosking Breakfast) This Plan is So Simple, It Might Just Work/Mark the Week/Working Out the Warriors' Chances/Pogs Defined/Hydrogen On the Way
Mobile phone apps ruined everything. As a result of minimal processing power and small screen size, mobile app developers had little choice but to keep things basic. Given that mobile devices are used by everyone on the planet, including a lot of people who are not particularly smart, mobile apps also had to be "simple". Now everybody thinks that everything should be as simple to use as a mobile phone app. Simple = Simple? What may seem simple to a hard-core coder, does not seem simple to me. What may seem simple to me, may not seem simple to you. What may seem simple to you, may not seem simple to your Mom. So "Simple" does not equal "Simple". The dictionary defines simple as "easily understood or done; presenting no difficulty", but again... for who? I think of it as the "Simple Continuum", with the coder on one end, and your Mom on the other. The rest of us fall somewhere on this continuum. Simple vs. Powerful Simple and Powerful are in an ongoing tug-of-war in every part of our lives, but since I write about Business Applications, I'll narrow the conversation here. In looking across the business applications landscape, most providers have chosen a path. They are either Simple, or Powerful. Those that claim to be both, are usually neither. Microsoft has clearly chosen the "Powerful" path for Business Applications, which makes sense for their Enterprise customer focus, and their competitive targets. But they do make some "Simple" claims here and there. Microsoft's Simple One area where Microsoft is staking a "Simple" claim is with Canvas Based PowerApps. Many of us have seen Microsoft's Ryan Cunningham dazzle us with his ability to build a complete Canvas App in minutes on stage. It's actually either real, or an illusion of simplicity, depending on where you fall on the "Simple Continuum". What I have found interesting about Canvas apps is, that it appears that having too much knowledge is actually a handicap. The hard-core coder will take three times as long, to build an app that is not even as good, as what a novice can do. My guess is that they over-think it. What is Powerful? Powerful is another loaded term, that means different things to different people. Clearly, there is no question that the Dynamics 365 First-Party apps like Enterprise Sales, Customer Service, PSA etc. are Powerful applications. These applications have the power to solve extremely complex business scenarios, for even the largest customers in the world. But what about companies, of any size, whose needs are not particularly complex? For them, Powerful might be defined differently, they might consider the ability to create a Project in a few minutes to be quite "Powerful". In fact, the number one reason companies with less complicated needs often suffer with Business Applications is that they are offered "too much" Power. More power than they need, more power than they can understand, more power than they can adopt. This is particularly acute with companies that are new to Business Applications. It is also not specific to Microsoft, many customers of Salesforce.com, and any Enterprise Business Applications vendor, struggle with this same issue. Our Choice? In designing our RapidStart CRM application, we wanted to walk the line of Simple, yet Powerful. This was no easy task, and it required us to first define our ideal customer. In our case, it was a customer who did not have complex needs, and defined Powerful differently. It could also be a customer who had the potential for complexity, but wanted to start simple, and work their way into it. So our Power would come from our Simplicity. Fortunately, the only other Business Applications out there that one might consider simple, are dead-end products that would require migration once outgrown, whereas RapidStart CRM can simply be upgraded to the Dynamics 365 First-party apps at any time. But let's circle back to this idea of "Simple", and how you get there. Less is More or Less Fortunately for us, RapidStart has a strong brand, both inside and outside of Microsoft. When we undertook to re-imagine RapidStart on the Power Platform as RapidStart CRM, we had a significant head-start. We also had the benefit of hundreds of past deployments of our original model, to really understand what our ideal customer was looking for. The biggest issues were, adding more features, and making it even simpler to use. Again, this presented a conundrum, adding features increases complexity, which is the natural enemy of simplicity. We opted to further simplify our sales capabilities, while adding Case Management and Project Management to our new application. To insure we were meeting our goal of "Simple", we enlisted the help of... Pat. What About Pat? Pat, is a fictional persona that we created. Pat is an intelligent person, who knows their business, but is not particularly tech savvy. Pat might be the owner of a small business, or a division manager of a large business. Pat just wants the team to be successful, whether the team is sales, service or project management, or a combination of all of them. Pat is looking for something simple, but with the kind of power Pat needs. Pat has neither the time, budget nor patience for anything "Complex". Over time, internally we got a pretty good idea of who Pat is, and we actually became friends. We never did figure out if Pat was a male or a female. Whenever anyone on our team came up with a new idea, we would ask: "Could Pat do it?". It is amazing how many things Pat either can or can't, or will or won't, do. In a way, you could say that Pat built RapidStart CRM, but I'm still taking full credit for it. Beyond the Application Building a Simple to use, but Powerful application for our Ideal customer was huge amount of effort, but it was only one part of the effort. For aspiring ISVs, there are a few more things that you will need to do to succeed, some of these are complex, but the customer-facing parts still need to be simple. For example, you need to build a commerce engine for people to buy your application. On the backend. connecting to payment processors, auto-provisioning, subscription management, etc, are all complex things, but on the front end, it needs to be simple enough for Pat to buy your damn product. While Marketing campaigns can be costly and complex to design and run, they may ultimately drive traffic to a website that has to be clear and simple enough for Pat to understand. Without knowing in advance exactly where Pat will fall on the Simple Continuum, you will need to be able to provide varying levels of support and training. For all of these, and many other things I did not get into, I suggest you create your own Pat... then just run everything by him, er, or her.

I recently read an ingenious idea. One mom was in a dark parenting rut, as she describes it. She realized that she was actually bullying her kids. She started to give physical reminders that kindness, patience, and gentleness are what she's aiming for. {Day 8} My Prayer today for my kids: Ephesians 1:16-23 I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way (NIV). {Day 9} Some friends and I were discussing how we, as moms, take our children's misbehavior personally. We internalize it. Do you do that? Do you feel like your children's misbehavior is a reflection of you and your parenting? {DAY 10} How often have you said, "JUST DO IT!" to your kids? Whether they're dilly-dallying, outright defying you, or getting distracted (that happens A LOT in our home!), you need something done either for your good or theirs, and yet, they just can't seem to get it done. "Just do it!" we say exasperatedly. "How hard is it?" we ask because we just can't understand how they can't finish something SO SIMPLE. Normally, it would take them a fraction of the time it is taking them. Do we forget that we do the exact same thing? #humpdaygiveaway | Week 7 Q: What is the name of the studio in Cambridge, MA that Jon frequents? Since I have been diving into the drum industry, I have thought that session work was extremely hard to come by and I often hear is dead and a thing of the past. I have also heard that “the hang” is almost as important as your level of skill when talking about getting hired. But I never thought so much about an effective way to approach the session game and how one may put it all together. This episode, with Jonathon Ulman, turned out to be so valuable in terms of information. He goes into splendid detail about basically how he makes a living and openly shares, what would seem like common sense after his explanation, his approach to it ALL! For starters, Jonathan has an incredible attention to detail. He is strictly organized and professional and makes sure he has a solid plan when approaching his gigs, content, schedule, and performance. He is very THOROUGH. Secondly, Jonathan is very self-aware and incredibly conscientious, in regards to how he reads a situation and the people it involves. He basically takes the form of a chameleon and blends himself into whatever situation he falls into. He is quite ADAPTIVE we’ll say. During this process of booking the interview, exchanging content and material to make this show possible and general keeping tabs on approaching the release of this episode….Jonathan has been so nice to work with. He is incredibly PROFESSIONAL with his work and when this spreads around, it won’t be long and even more people will want to work with him. You always hear wise people saying the phrase, “I just treat people the way I want to be treated”, and it seems SO SIMPLE! Yet, not everyone does this. I really do appreciate it when people go the extra mile to make sure someone’s needs are met and exceeded upon, and Jonathan makes sure to assume this task with his clients. He is ATTENTIVE. Lastly, and seemingly, least importantly, you need to be able to do the job. Can you play? Can you do the song justice by playing some solid time and getting in and out of the studio quick so that people’s time and money aren’t being wasted on your ego to chop out? This is important stuff when you plan to work in a studio. It may be at the bottom of the list for a good reason. The other stuff at the end of the day is what gets you called back, you are not just being called for your SKILL. So what does that spell when you put THOROUGH, ADAPTIVE, PROFESSIONAL, ATTENTIVE and SKILL? T.A.P.A.S Normally Tapas is a gathering of small Spanish savory dishes but Jonathan uses this as a metaphor to explain the framework of what makes him successful as a session musician. All of these components are important and the way Jonathon explains this is brilliant. Overall, this philosophy he has adopted is a brilliant recipe for success and every drummer who hears this will totally get it. www.jonathanulman.com | Instagram | Facebook The musical sounds featured in GAG REEL are taken from Frank Zappa’s Uncle Meat - Track titled ProjectX Song Credits: Holly Miranda - Midnight Oil www.drumgab.com

The Big Food Industry has engineered food that pushes your genetic buttons. Industry and the media proclaims you can’t just stop binge eating. You must heal your inner child and trauma’s of early life before the binge eating beast can be tamed. Our guest, Glenn Livingston, PhD., disagrees. He has a method and best selling book that tells you what and how to stop binge eating. He should know. Glenn struggled for 30 years before discovering how to tame the beast.
