Tom Sachs is a contemporary artist and cultural provocateur known for turning branded consumer objects into high art. This conversation explores the paradoxes that define Tom's art and his iconoclastic philosophy of living; why creativity is the enemy, the power of sympathetic magic, consumerism as secular religion, the infamous Barney's nativity scene that launched his career, and why persistence — not talent — is omnipotent. And in doing so, Tom dismantles the intransigent myth that artists are a different species and makes a compelling case that we're all creative beings irrespective of what we do for a living. Tom is equal parts Werner Herzog and blue-collar craftsman. Enjoy! BGMania B-Sides #42 of BGMania: A Video Game Music Podcast. Today on the show, Bedroth drops into Risk of Rain 2, the relentless roguelike shooter that turns isolation and chaos into an ever-escalating fight for survival. What starts as a quiet landing on an alien world quickly spirals into overwhelming waves of enemies, towering bosses, and that constant ticking pressure to move faster before the difficulty swallows you whole. The soundtrack matches that intensity beat for beat, fusing atmospheric ambience with driving percussion, soaring guitar lines, and synth textures that feel both futuristic and strangely human. Tracks build gradually, layering rhythm and melody until they erupt into cathartic climaxes that mirror the game's frantic momentum. It's music that thrives on tension and release, perfectly capturing the lonely vastness of an alien planet while pushing you forward into the storm. Send a textMeduza documentary interview with director Roc Morin.A Ukrainian actor who once played a sniper on screen is recruited as one in real life—this conversation explores how war reshapes identity, memory, and meaning.Roc Morin is a filmmaker and journalist whose work explores the intersection of conflict, culture, and the inner lives of people living through historical rupture. He is the director of the documentary MEDUZA, which follows Ukrainian artist and actor Pavlo Aldoshyn, who became a sniper when the full-scale invasion began in 2022—drawing, uncannily, on skills he had previously learned playing a sniper in a film role. Shot over two years, MEDUZA traces Pavlo's psychological and spiritual transformation as war reshapes not only his life, but the framework he uses to understand himself and the world. Before turning to documentary filmmaking, Roc reported extensively on Ukraine beginning in 2014. Following the full-scale invasion in 2022, he entered the country in the earliest days of the war, crossing the border on foot and making his way to Lviv when no formal transportation was available.Roc previously directed the documentary You Are My Audience and served as a producer on Werner Herzog's Family Romance, LLC. MEDUZA was produced with his longtime collaborator Leïla Wolf, whose creative partnership deeply shaped the film.Filmed across Ukraine, the United States, Japan, India, and Ecuador, MEDUZA reflects Roc's distinctive approach to documentary filmmaking—one that resists spectacle in favor of intimacy, and asks not only what is happening in the world, but how people metabolize it internally. This episode features MEDUZA director Roc Morin discussing the story behind the documentary.Important Episode Links:https://www.rocmorin.com/Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwcjBl2RayoIMDb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm9128669/#Meduza #UkraineWar #DocumentaryFilm #WarAndIdentity #Transformation #ImmortalJellyfish #HumanCondition #WarStories#Filmmaking #IndependentFilm #PsychologyOfWar#ArtAndWar #DocumentaryInterview #ProgressPotentialAndPossibilities #IraPastor #PodcastSupport the show
Da darf man ruhig mal sagen: Huch. Was noch? Wer dringend eine Million Euro braucht, sollte diese Woche genau hinhören. Das Bundeskriminalamt hat zugegeben, dass sie die Stromabdrehertruppe aus Berlin alleine nicht kriegen und wendet sich nun hilfesuchend an die Bevölkerung. Was soll schon schiefgehen, wenn man mit unverhältnismäßig viel Geld ein paar ungelernte Hilfssheriffs mit viel Tagesfreizeit aufstachelt, die Polizei zu unterstützen? Außerdem konnten wir in den letzten Wochen folgendes Naturschauspiel unter Podcasthörern beobachten: „He would neither go towards the Fun Guys from Gemischtes Hack, nor return to the old farts of Fest und Flauschig. Shortly afterwards, we saw him heading straight towards Baywatch Berlin. And here, he's heading off into the interior of the vast Timeline. With 5,000 hours of bla bla ahead of him, he's heading towards certain stupidity. "BUT WHY?“ Du möchtest mehr über unsere Werbepartner erfahren? This week, hosts Dave Bittner, Joe Carrigan, and Maria Varmazis (also host of the T-Minus Space Daily show) are sharing the latest in social engineering scams, phishing schemes, and criminal exploits that are making headlines. Joe share's another chicken update for us, this time from Werner Herzog. Dave's got a story from a listener named Tim, an IRS Criminal Investigation agent, who explains that real CI agents may contact people unannounced and can verify themselves in person, but if anyone asks for gift cards or crypto, it's definitely a scam. Maria has the story on how attackers are abusing real SendGrid accounts to send politically charged phishing emails that look legitimate and trick users into handing over their credentials. Joe has two stories this week, the first on Cambodia's renewed crackdown on massive Southeast Asian scam networks following the arrest and extradition of alleged kingpin Chen Zhi, signaling deeper international cooperation against fraud operations that have stolen billions worldwide, and the second on a Nashville Uber driver who lost $300 after falling for a convincing phone scam that impersonated Uber Support and falsely accused him of drunk driving. Our catch of the day comes from Reddit scams where one scammer gets put through the ringer, twice. Resources and links to stories: Cambodia to keep up crackdown on scam centres after arrest of alleged mastermind Uber driver describes drunk driving scam that cost him $300 SendGrid isn't emailing you about ICE or BLM. It's a phishing attack. Dave Part 1 Have a Catch of the Day you'd like to share? Email it to us at hackinghumans@n2k.com.

Whether marooned on a desert island or stranded by a plane crash, countless stories of survival are found onscreen. In both dramatic reimagining and reality television formats, these narratives showcase ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. But why are these feats of human endurance so compelling to watch? Ellen E Jones speaks to Ray Mears, wilderness guide, bushcraft expert, and broadcaster who has spent his life teaching people how to stay alive in some of the most remote parts of the world. He shares what film and television gets wrong about survival - and why the witchetty grub deserves more reverence.Debra Granik, director of the 2018 film Leave No Trace, reflects on how sessions with a primitive skills instructor and Youtube shelter building tutorials informed her approach to filming. She also describes why survival can often include economic survival in some regions of the USA, and why a certain skillset is vital for everyday living, as evidenced in her 2010 film Winter's Bone. Mark talks to the daring wanderer and survivor Werner Herzog, a filmmaker with decades of experience in perilous scenarios. Werner details his fascination with the survival narratives found in his documentaries, Wings of Hope and Little Dieter Needs to Fly - and why finding yourself back from the brink of existence can lead to a greater appreciation of life. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 27, 2025 is: apropos ap-ruh-POH preposition Apropos is used as a preposition to mean "with regard to." It is frequently used in the phrase "apropos of." // Sean interrupted our conversation about politics and, apropos of nothing, asked who we thought would win the basketball game. As an adjective, apropos describes something that is suitable or appropriate, as in "an apropos nickname." See the entry > Examples: "Once, at the height of COVID, I dropped off a book at the home of Werner Herzog. I was an editor at the time and was trying to assign him a review, so I drove up to his gate in Laurel Canyon, and we had the briefest of masked conversations. Within 30 seconds, it turned strange. 'Do you have a dog? A little dog?' he asked me, staring out at the hills of Los Angeles, apropos of nothing. He didn't wait for an answer. 'Then be careful of the coyotes,' Herzog said." — Gal Beckerman, The Atlantic, 8 Jan. 2025 Did you know? Apropos wears its ancestry like a badge—or perhaps more fittingly a beret. From the French phrase à propos, meaning "to the purpose," the word's emphasis lands on its last syllable, which ends in a silent "s": ap-ruh-POH. Apropos typically functions as an adjective describing what is suitable or appropriate ("an apropos comment"), or as a preposition (with or without of) meaning "with regard to," as in "apropos (of) the decision, implementation will take some time." The phrase "apropos of nothing" is used to signal that what follows does not relate to any previous topic.

Host Frances McDormand leads us through this rich international story collection of land, community and food. From the organic olive groves and vineyards being grown on confiscated Mafia land in Sicily, to secret night clubs embedded in Soviet dissident kitchens. From tales of "cooking dogs" in Medieval England, to the little-known tale of agricultural explorers — the "Indiana Joneses of the plant world" — who introduced exotic dates from the Middle East to the Coachella Valley. We also go underground into the world of wine, war, and counterfeiting.Plus, actor Gael Garcia Bernal takes us to his grandmother's Sinaloa kitchen in Mexico, Salman Rushdie takes us to Chocolate Town, Werner Herzog eats his shoe, and poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti gives us his recipe for happiness.Hidden Kitchens World was produced by The Kitchen Sisters (Davia Nelson & Nikki Silva) in collaboration with Nathan Dalton and Brandi Howell, along with listeners around the world. Recorded live at the Toronto International Film Festival, David Peck sits down with filmmaker Bryan Fuller to discuss Dust Bunny, Fuller's darkly playful and deeply personal feature debut. What begins as a conversation about genre influences, Frankenstein, Blade Runner and Gremlins, turns inward, as Fuller reflects on childhood fear, imagination, and fairy tales. Together they explore how the film reframes monsters as emotional realities rather than fantasy creatures, and how humour, wonder, and visual style create both distance and healing. Dust Bunny emerges as a story for adults that is frightening, funny, and so tender. Bryan Fuller is an acclaimed writer, producer, and filmmaker celebrated for his visually striking, emotionally complex storytelling. He is best known as the creator of genre-defining television series including Hannibal, Pushing Daisies, Wonderfalls, and Dead Like Me, as well as his work on Star Trek: Discovery and American Gods. Across television, Fuller has built a reputation for blending dark humour, heightened fantasy, and deeply human themes, often exploring identity, trauma, and transformation through bold, imaginative worlds. With Dust Bunny, his feature-film debut, Fuller brings his singular voice to cinema. Premiering at TIFF's Midnight Madness, the film merges fairy tale, horror, and wit into a deeply personal story rooted in childhood fear and resilience. Whether working in television or film, Fuller continues to push genre boundaries, crafting stories that are visually lush, emotionally resonant, and unafraid to confront the monsters—real and imagined—that shape us.David Peck is a writer, speaker, and award-winning podcaster who works at the intersection of storytelling, social change, and meaningful dialogue. In this powerful and deeply personal conversation, David Peck speaks with filmmaker Eisha Marjara about her new film Calorie, a story rooted in the emotional aftershocks of the 1985 Air India bombing. Drawing from her own family history and loss, Marjara unpacks the complex layers of grief, identity, and resilience embodied in Monica—a single mother living in the long shadow of tragedy. Together, they explore how personal trauma intersects with political and cultural histories, and how storytelling can reveal universal truths that bridge cultures and foster empathy. Calorie opens in theaters on November 28 and will be available elsewhere soon.Eisha Marjara gained recognition with her NFB docudrama Desperately Seeking Helen, winning the Critic's Choice Award at Locarno and the Jury Prize at München. She later wrote and directed. The Tourist, House for Sale, and the award-winning feature Venus. Her NFB short documentary Am I the Skinniest Person You've Ever Seen? won the Betty Youson Award for Best Canadian Short at the 2024 Hot Docs Festival, as well as Best Documentary at Frontdoc, and at It's All True film festival.Calorie is her most recent feature to date, inspired by real events.David Peck is a writer, speaker, and award-winning podcaster who works at the intersection of storytelling, social change, and meaningful dialogue. For Elena's Birthday this year we decided to break format and discuss the German New Wave classic Kings of the Road. This three hour Wim Wenders film is a quietly meditative look at West German cinema culture seen through the eyes of two aimless men. The hosts have a fun time discussing the history of German film from the 20s through the 70s and even make space to share a couple manifestos with each other. Topics include: Hitler candles, Werner Herzog's level of self-awareness, and poop on screen.
Pick it up because it's short. Continue it because of the brutal Bavarian accent. Finish it because maybe he's on to something? The Future of Truth By: Werner Herzog Published: 2025 128 Pages Briefly, what is this book about? Legendary badass, and sometimes filmmaker Werner Herzog weighs in on the concept of truth, how best to represent truth, and what's happening to it. Drawing on his own experiences he distinguishes between dry, factual truth, and what he calls ecstatic truth, a deeper kind of truth revealed by art. Who should read this book? I don't think anyone should literally read this book. It's best consumed as an audiobook with Herzog's strangely compelling narration carrying you along. With a voice like Herzog's and clocking in at only 3.5 hours of audio, it almost doesn't matter what it's about. What does the book have to say about the future?
We spend most of this episode exploring James Carse's "Finite and Infinite Games," working through the distinction between societies that defend boundaries and cultures that exist on horizons. Alex reads passages from the book about how patriotism requires enemies to function, why authentic movements like the Renaissance don't oppose anyone, and how any finite concept that tries to contain everything else is inherently evil. Matt reflects on his own pull toward rigid, binary thinking despite intellectually understanding the value of infinite play. We discuss how systems naturally protect themselves when threatened, why baseball feels different from other sports, and how finite games can exist beautifully within infinite contexts. The conversation shifts to Werner Herzog's question about uranium storage: how do you warn people 40,000 years in the future when language, images, and cultural context will have completely dissolved? Even Shakespeare is barely comprehensible after a few hundred years. We discuss breeding blue cacti, building impossible structures, and why rituals might be the only way to transmit meaning across deep time—though even Stonehenge gets misread as alien intervention. This leads us into territory about synchronicity and consciousness: Alex's story about needing a bat at his lowest point and immediately stepping on one, Matt's impossible birthday coincidence, seeing Alexander Payne right after thinking about him. We talk about channeling, glimpses of God, and whether these moments suggest something beyond atoms randomly floating around. -Ai If you enjoyed this episode, please consider giving us a rating and/or a review. This week, an encore of our 2023 conversation with legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog. He's made over 70 movies – most of them documentaries like Fitzcarraldo, Aguirre, the Wrath of God, and Grizzly Man. Herzog's style is so distinctive that his films are recognizable practically from the moment they start. His techniques can be controversial too, when it comes to his unusual casting, and his own presence in the stories he's telling. On October 21, 2023, Herzog came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco to talk to Caterina Fake about filmmaking and writing, including his new memoir, Every Man for Himself and God Against All.

Werner Herzog deals in ecstatic truths. But are they truthful enough to deal with the brutal legacy of slavery and colonialism? We discuss COBRA VERDE, Herzog's last collaboration with Klaus Kinski, a movie about the slave trade and the little freaks who kept it running. Topics include: producing a shot with thousands of extras, Herzog and history, and, weirdly, Michael Haneke. Watch the movie here or on Criterion, who are doing a big Herzog retrospective right now. Here is an article about the movie that was interesting that I dont necessarily 100% agree with. Matt's rec. Corbin's rec is in a weird release vortex right now but you'll be able to see it soon. Ryder recommends a food. Our next episode is about EDDINGTON. You can watch it on HBOMax if you're so inclined. Have a wonderful week!
This one happened fast. A week ago, a publicist reached out to ask if I'd possibly be interested in helping to promote a documentary about a guy (a white guy) who thinks he's supposed to bring together the native people of South and North America — whose combined teachings will then spread across the planet and save us all. My first impression was that this one sounded crazy, possibly racist, and not something I really want to spend time on. But the fact that the director had worked with Werner Herzog caught my attention. (I love me some Werner Herzog.) So I agreed to check out a screener, and last night, Anya and I sat down to watch at least the first few minutes — reluctantly. WTF?! We were hooked immediately, watched the whole thing in amazement, and this afternoon, less than 24 hours later, Gabe Polsky and I sat down to talk about his film. If it's playing anywhere near you, trust me, go see it. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll get a little confused and grossed out … but you will not — guaranteed — get bored.Intro music “Brightside of the Sun,” by Basin and Range. “I Saved the World Today,” by The Eurythmics. Despite the joy and celebration for people across the Middle East at the US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the United Nations, once seen as the world's best hope for peace, is increasingly paralyzed. Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by podcaster, author, musician and all round lovely human ADAM BUXTON!A home run of an episode right here as Pip checks in with original podcast homie Adam on all things! And it really is all things, but most pertinent at this moment in time is Adam's new album of full song material 'Buckle Up' - something he's been hinting at for ages on his own podcast (and we all hoped for, on the strength of the jingles), and now has its own home on Decca Records no less. A lot of lovely behind the scenes action on that, but Pip and Adam also check in on such items as the act of sharing with guests on a podcast, Werner Herzog's Zoom odyssey, clashes of guest bookings and the hierarchy of talent, the Clipse parallel, losing loved ones and authoring books, to honest or not to honest, taking people up on help offers, sitting with things and not avoiding them, major label biz, the genesis of songs (not the songs of Genesis), being the right side of annoying and playing your own music for folks.
