In this episode, we examine how comfort can become a creative liability. Through conversations about films, road trips, and creative production, we explore the paradox that meaningful work often requires embracing uncertainty and hardship. The tension between structure and surrender becomes central to our discussion—whether on film sets, during travel, or in personal projects. We consider the difference between merely discussing creative work versus actually producing it, and how modern conveniences make it easier to stay in the realm of theory rather than practice. Drawing from Japanese poet Basho, we reflect on how true creation happens when we stop imposing ourselves on our subject and instead achieve a deeper connection through surrender and presence. -Ai If you enjoyed this episode, please consider giving us a rating and/or a review. They trace the film's philosophical undercurrents—from existential isolation to the limits of power—set against the backdrop of the unforgiving Amazon. Through sharp analysis and reflective banter, they uncover what Herzog's fever dream of conquest reveals about the nature of obsession.

Screenwriting legend Zak Penn talks about how he got so savvy in the business of show.  We talk about how coming to LA and scouting out the city geared him up for his big move after college and his sale of “The Last Action Hero” started him on a 35 year journey of being one of Hollywood's most sought after writers. We talk about the good times with Speilberg, JJ Abrams, Shawn Levy, Ryan Reynolds, & Dwayne Johnson and we talk about the bad times with others. Bio: Zak Penn's career began as a screenwriter when he sold his first script, LAST ACTION HERO, at the age of twenty-three. Since then, Penn has become known for his work on numerous films based on Marvel comics, including X-MEN 2 and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, ELEKTRA, THE INCREDIBLE HULK and THE AVENGERS. He has also dabbled in other genres, writing scripts for disparate films such as P.C.U., BEHIND ENEMY LINES and SUSPECT ZERO.Penn's shift into independent cinema began when he collaborated with his idol, Werner Herzog, on the script for RESCUE DAWN. Penn directed and co-starred with Herzog in INCIDENT AT LOCH NESS, his award-winning “hoax” documentary about the legendary director's attempts to make a film about the equally legendary monster. THE GRAND, Penn's second completely improvised film, was his third film with Herzog, and featured an eclectic cast including Woody Harrelson, David Cross, Ray Romano, Cheryl Hines, Dennis Farina and Gabe Kaplan. In addition, Penn co-wrote the original story for ANTZ and produced the animated film OSMOSIS JONES. He has also acted in a number of independent films, including STAR MAPS and CHUCK & BUCK. His first foray into television was the critically acclaimed original series ALPHAS starring David Strathairn. Penn directed the documentary ATARI: GAME OVER for Xbox Entertainment Studios.More recently, Penn adapted the New York Times bestselling novel READY PLAYER ONE for Warner Bros. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film was released in 2018. Penn also co-wrote the script for the action comedy FREE GUY, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Comer. The film is directed by Shawn Levy and was released in August of 2021.

This week on *The Rotten Horror Picture Show*, Clay and Amanda are doing nothing to help my steadily worsening vampire confusion by taking a big ol' bite out of Werner Herzog's 1979 classic Nosferatu the Vampyre, starring Klaus Kinski as maybe the creepiest Dracula/Nosferatu/Count Orlok hybrid ever filmed. It's moody, it's beautiful, and it's got rats. So many rats. Okay. Look. I'm just gonna say it: I think we've officially hit critical mass on Nosferatus and Draculas. I mean, how many pasty bald guys with capes and long fingernails named “Count Something” does the world *need*? First there was the original *Nosferatu*, then Lugosi's *Dracula*, then Lee's *Dracula*, then the *Nosferatu* remake, then Dracula in space, Dracula in love, Dracula with a podcast probably—I don't know anymore. The point is, I'm starting to suspect these aren't *characters* in movies. I think they might be *real*, and I think they're multiplying. Every time I look around, there's another Nosferatu lurking in a dark corner, hissing at a cat. I'm tired. I'm confused. And I'm scared of capes now.Join Clay and Amanda as they dive into Herzog's eerie homage to Murnau's 1922 silent classic and debate just how many spooky bald vampires is too many. Is Kinski's Count Dracula really just Orlok with a stage name? Does it matter when he's this unsettling? Who gave him permission to move like *that*?One thing's for sure: if another Nosferatu pops up, I'm going into hiding. Probably somewhere with garlic. Maybe in a mall. Wait, no—*not* a mall. We've been over that.Anyway, listen in… while you still can.And be sure to hit up patreon.com/thepenskyfile to hear all the coverage of remakes and reboots this year!

Author David Shields returns to the show for a conversation about his new documentary, HOW WE GOT HERE, and the companion book, HOW WE GOT HERE: Melville plus Nietzsche divided by the square root of Allan Bloom times Žižek squared = Bannon (Sublation Media). We get into how the world moved from the death of God to the death of essence to the death of truth, and how deconstruction, once the province of left-wing academia, was weaponized by right-wing authoritarians for political aims. We talk about how much blame he bears for all this with his 2010 book Reality Hunger, how it feels to be a radical with deep skepticism of radicals' language, his affinity for Werner Herzog's notion of the ecstatic truth in documentary films, what he learned from interviewing nonfiction writers about the nature of truth, and how he feels about going to his first WWE event. We also discuss nonlinear warfare and the endless deconstruction of reality, how writing can "build a bridge across the abyss of human loneliness" (per DFW), what he's learned from the collaboration of making documentaries, his fixation on hamartia (the tragic flaw), Walter Benjamin's notion of pursuing the truth even if we'll never reach it, bringing the public, social and personal worlds together in his writing, and a lot more. Tom Luddy was a quiet titan of cinema. He presided over the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley for some 10 years, co-founded and directed The Telluride Film Festival for nearly 50 years, produced some 14 movies, match-made dozens of international love affairs, and foraged for the most beautiful, political, important, risky films and made sure there was a place for them to be seen in the world. And that the people making this powerful work were known and knew each other. Tom Luddy with his photographic memory, his infinite rolodex, his encyclopedic knowledge of global cinema and his catalytic ability to connect people, caused the most unusual of collaborations to come to be. Tom championed the French New Wave, the Czech New Wave, Brazilian cinema novo, dissident Soviet cinema, directors Francis Coppola, Jean-Luc Godard, Werner Herzog, Agnes Varda, Les Blank, Paul Schrader, Agnieszka Holland, Barry Jenkins, Laurie Anderson and countless others.Tom passed away on February 13, 2023. There's a giant hole in the screen without him here. But his DNA is in the hundreds of filmmakers, musicians, writers and activists he nurtured and inspired. The Tom Luddy Connection: The Man, The Movies, The Rolodex was produced by Evan Jacoby and The Kitchen Sisters (Davia Nelson & Nikki Silva) in collaboration with Brandi Howell and Nathan Dalton. Shadow Nemesis escaped Werner Herzog's control and sacrificed most of his soul to summon the attention of the Gravewalker. At the campsite, New Rogue shared his belief that all beings are worthy of being saved and his fear that Del and Tyler are sliding into darkness. Del learned from Lucretia that if she damned Adam's soul to hell, Shadow Nemesis would be sucked back to a previous realm and Lucretia could let Adam out to work with his friends, but Tyler became wary of Lucretia's influence and discreetly cast Protection from Good and Evil on Del. Nesta edição do podcast cinematório café, nós analisamos o filme "Nosferatu" (2024), de Robert Eggers, diretor de "A Bruxa", "O Farol" e "O Homem do Norte". A nova versão do clássico do horror de 1922 traz no grande elenco Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe e Bill Skarsgård. Robert Eggers on Nosferatu

Nosferatu, the new film by Robert Eggers, has been the talk of the movie-town since its release on Christmas Day. With his remake of F.W. Murnau's 1922 classic of the same name, Eggers has become the latest auteur to bring Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula to the screen, joining a group that also includes Werner Herzog and Francis Ford Coppola. Like those before him, Eggers makes the tale of the Transylvanian vampire all his own. His Nosferatu is rooted in precise historical detail—as in his earlier films like The Witch (2015) and The Northman (2022)—while also bringing a contemporary psychodramatic sensibility to the characters, particularly Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) and Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp). On today's Podcast, Eggers joins Film Comment Editor Devika Girish to discuss why he wanted to make Dracula “scary” again, the polarizing feminist readings of Nosferatu, and the visual restraint of the film. If you stick it out until the end, you'll also hear Eggers share some of the movies and T.V. shows he counts as Guilty Pleasures—including a reality show featuring a “demonic masc villain.”

Herzog reflects on the curiosity that's fueled his career in the memoir, Every Man for Himself and God Against All, now out in paperback. The filmmaker and writer is drawn to extremes: extreme characters, extreme settings, extreme scenarios. But don't mistake him for a mad man like some of his film subjects: "You have to control what is wild in you. You have to be disciplined. And people think I'm the wild guy out there but I'm a disciplined professional," he tells Terry Gross.Film critic Justin Chang reviews Queer.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
