I had a pretty uplifting week over here in the Simple File Upload world.  Michele Hansen  00:38You know what? That's good to hear. Because I feel like last week you were, we talked about how you were kind of feeling like you were in the void.  Colleen Schnettler  00:44I totally was. And, you know, I still feel that but I'm trying to, two things happen that changed my perspective. One, I got another check from Heroku. So that always helps. That doesn't hurt. And I'm kind of just trying to focus on my mindset as I approach this business. I have to say the check from Heroku because unlike Stripe, where you just get paid randomly when people, you know, when people pay, you only get paid once a month. So I've been telling you I have $800 MRR for like three weeks, and I haven't seen that money. So I just saw that money yesterday. So that was pretty exciting. Michele Hansen  01:21Nice Colleen Schnettler  01:22Yeah, I think I remember telling you my very first check. I got like I had enough leftover to buy a bagel.  Michele Hansen  01:28Yes. The bagel, the $20 bagel. Colleen Schnettler  01:30The $20 bagel. Well, this time it was it was quite a bit more so I could could have bought quite a few bagels. So that was pretty exciting.  Michele Hansen  01:37And I saw you tweeted out earlier this week that the Stripe payouts, I was just like payout, payout, payout. Colleen Schnettler  01:45I think what must happen is like people must have signed up, there were, like, four or five people who signed up like one day apart. And so the all of their invoices hit like right after each other. So I like signed on to my email every day, and it was like payout payout payout. It was awesome. It's very exciting. It was a lot of excitedness in terms of actually seeing the fruits of my labor on this product this week. So that was fun.  Michele Hansen  02:10Yay. Internet money.  Colleen Schnettler  02:12Yay, internet money.  Michele Hansen  02:13So where is your MRR at now? So I just checked and I'm at $975. I know. What? Oh my god, you're almost at the $1,000 MRR mark, and it's been, like, three months. Yeah, I guess it's, yeah, three, oh my god. Like,  Colleen Schnettler  02:35Yeah.  Michele Hansen  02:36That's, that's not common. Like, just for everybody else kind of like, listening like that is, that is very uncommon. Like, you're you're not like ending up on $1,000 after three months like Coleen like that's, that's normal. Like, I think it took us like six months, and even then that was kind of fast for a little project. Dude, 975. Yeah. Colleen Schnettler  02:57That's real money. It's real. That's why my last check. Because if you look at my checks from Heroku, and once again, I only get those once a month. It's not like Stripe. It was like the first one was like 150. The second one was like 250. This last one was like $570. I was like, that's like, real money. Like I could do something with that money. That's cool. Yeah, so, so from a monetary perspective, it's going great. I think I, I was struggling a lot. And I still am kind of struggling because I don't have a good feedback loop. I have been kind of unsure what to do next, and how to push the product forward. And it's funny because I like I think mid last week, I was just in a funk. And I was like, You know what, I'm just gonna build it the way I want to build it. I'm gonna develop all these features. I don't care what anyone tells me. Like, I'm just gonna do what I want to do. And you know, of course, everyone I talked to is like, that's a terrible idea. And the best way someone phrased it to me, they were like, what if you do go and you spend a couple months and you build all these features you feel like you need, you're still not going to know who your customer is. Like, I was complaining because I don't know who my customer is. And she was like, even if you spend this time to build that out, you'll be three months down the road, and you still won't know who your customer is. So have you made any progress? And I was like, oh, that's a good way to put it. So, I did a few interviews this week, which was really great. I'm really gonna take a pause on any kind of development work, and just talk to people. I mean, talk talk, talk.  Michele Hansen  03:01Colleen. Colleen Schnettler  03:02I know, I know. Michele Hansen  03:04You're done putzing around in the code garden and like, you're out there in the town square.  Colleen Schnettler  03:29I'm convinced. Like, between the, I mean, I probably five different people had to tell me this. But like you guys have convinced me that I just need to talk to more people. I just need, I don't know. Like, if you ask me who my ideal customer was, like, is, or who this provides value to, I can't identify that person, and casting a net of all developers is way too broad and too vague. So, that's really what I am focused on. In the next couple months, I think another thing is I need to calm down a little bit and slow down and be a little bit more patient.  Michele Hansen  05:21You said that you could go off and build something for three months, and it sounds like this person you were talking to, kind of helped you realize basically, like, you wouldn't know who you were building for and why you were building it and how they needed any of that to work.  Colleen Schnettler  05:39Yeah. And I think that's exactly the thing. So, so this week has been great. I spoke to three consultants, I have another one today, and I'm trying to get to five consultants, which I'm sure I can find one more person. Here's the thing, Michele, they all want different things.  Michele Hansen  05:56Oh. Colleen Schnettler  05:57So, unless I have the team and the budget of a CloudFlare, I can't build one product that fits the needs for all of these three different people.  Michele Hansen  06:09You know what this sounds like?  Colleen Schnettler  06:10No. Michele Hansen  06:11It sounds like the very beginning of a research loop to me.  Colleen Schnettler  06:15What's a research loop?  Michele Hansen  06:16Okay, so it's basically this idea that, like, you do a group of like, five interviews, and then you sort of analyze that and say, okay, of all of these different problems I've had, or rather, I've heard, which ones both sound, people are already paying for them to be solved, and they're unhappy with the way that they're being solved or in, they can also be paying in terms of significant amounts of time, like that counts. And then which of these problems do you think are relatively both feasible for you to solve, like, it would be possible for you to build something, and could also be like, commercially viable for you to sell, like, people would be willing to pay enough that would justify the time that goes into it. So basically kind of analyzing what you've heard so far, based on you know, how, how well those needs are already met, or, or not met?  Colleen Schnettler  07:07Yeah. Michele Hansen  07:08What they're already willing to pay for. And then, and then doing another round, focusing on those sort of top priority problems to figure out where you should go next. Like, it's completely normal that you would talk to five people and hear five different things. That doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong, if anything, that's really exciting.  Colleen Schnettler  07:30Oh, that made me excited. I felt like crap. Now, I don't know what to do.  Michele Hansen  07:35Oh, yeah, that makes sense. And you do it kind of like a pyramid, basically. You start out with a really wide scope in the beginning because you're casting a really wide net, like, you're just talking to all software consultants, which is a pretty broad, big net. And then you just sort of narrow it down based on where your capabilities are, and where people are willing to pay for stuff, and they're not happy with what they're currently doing.  Colleen Schnettler  08:02Yeah. Okay. So that was, that was really good. You're right. It's good to hear the details of what people struggle with, what their pain points are, how frequently they have those pain points. But yeah, I was only three interviews. So nothing magical came to light, like, oh, if I just did this one thing, I would have the product everyone wants, like, there was nothing like that. Everyone was building or wanted to build kind of a specialized solution for their needs. So, I guess the answer is just continue to talk to more people in that situation.  Michele Hansen  08:38Yeah, and, you know, also making it flexible, too. Like, if you genuinely hear that everybody wants something different, then, you know, making it so that they can customize it to their own needs is another route you could go on. But, I mean, it does not surprise me at all that you would not be hearing commonalities after just three people.  Colleen Schnettler  08:58Yeah. Yeah. Michele Hansen  09:00That's totally normal.  Colleen Schnettler  09:02Yeah. So, I think, I mean, before I start, like, what, I really want to go build an integration for this thing, or build an integration for that thing, but I think before I do any of that, like I said, I'm, you know, this is, there's no finish line here, right? Like this is this is my life, like, this is what I want to do. Even if I sold my company, I'd want to build another company. So I'm just trying to be a little bit patient and take my time and really figure out who the customer is and, you know, learn, learn about what they need and figure out how I can customize this product to their needs.  Michele Hansen  09:44It sounds like that, for you, like, that is almost the opposite of your instinct. Like your instinct is to go and build for three months.  Colleen Schnettler  09:57I mean, that's what I want to do. Like, let's be clear. Like I love people, but this process of like, finding people and like the, the whole, the whole logistics of it, you know, it's a lot. It takes a lot out of your day, I found that I'm a little nervous before I talk to them. it's a lot of emotional energy to like contain my own excitement, while I'm talking to them. And listen, like, that takes quite a bit of concentration as a beginner. Michele Hansen  10:24It takes concentration for me. It takes emotional energy for me. I mean, this is why I have this rule for myself that I don't do more than two in a day because the amount of energy that's required to sort of just, you know, I picture myself like this sponge that is just there to absorb whatever the other person says. Like, that requires a lot of energy, and, you know, a couple weeks ago, when I was first starting to interview all of my readers about my book, and my very meta interviews about customer interviews, I did six in one day, out of enthusiasm for this and, and at the end of that I was like, I heard so many amazing things. But I was also like, okay, now I remember why I've had two per day rule.  Colleen Schnettler  11:10Yeah. Yeah, so I think that's kind of, uh, definitely goes against my instincts to slow down and try and identify my customer. But I think the point that I want to build all these things, but until I know who I'm going to be serving, I don't even know what is important to build, and I can't know what is important to build, until I talk to people who need this product, who I, to identify them and talk to them. So that's going to, that's going to mean that I need to be a little more aggressive in finding people. I can't just like, I mean, I put a thing on Twitter, and I found five people, but I was only looking for five people. Like, I want more than I want a lot of people. So I think I'm going to try some of those strategies, you know, go on Reddit, and the strategies you write about in your book, actually. If you'd like to, I mean, you talk about this in your book, I reference your book, even though it's not done, like I haven't, I'm looking at it all the time, just so you know. Michele Hansen  12:06You know, one thing I want to note is that doing development work and customer research work, like, they're not an either, or. It doesn't have to be this switch, where you're only doing one at a time. Like I think, you know, the best cases are when this kind of research is just integrated into what you're already doing. And, you know, it does take time and focus, and like, context switching is difficult so you couldn't, you know, just like, you know, write code for like half an hour and then interview someone then right? Like, you can't sort of just switch back and forth super easily, but integrating it into your process. And maybe it's not that you, you know, don't go out and build these features for three months in a cave, or also that you don't go out and just talk to people for three months. It's that you do you know, both, you know, it's like, in the same way that, that people often ask me whether they should talk to people or whether they should look at analytics, and I'm like, porque no los dos? Like, do it at the same time.  Colleen Schnettler  13:07Yeah.  Michele Hansen  13:08Like, you could, you know, like, for example, I remember you talking about something you came out of the interview with Drew where you wanted to pull the code pen forward on the marketing side?  Colleen Schnettler  13:17Yes.  Michele Hansen  13:18Has that happened?  Colleen Schnettler  13:20No.  Michele Hansen  13:21Oh, I don't mean to, like call you out or anything. It's like, you know, there's like,  Colleen Schnettler  13:25Developer calling me out on my own podcast, Michele. Michele Hansen  13:28I'm sorry. Like, there's development work you can do, Colleen Schnettler  13:32Yeah. Michele Hansen  13:33That you'll find in these things as you go.  Colleen Schnettler  13:35Yeah. And I think that's, that's really the key. And that, that's will keep me in like a happy psychological state, too, because I'll get to, I'll get to do a little code, I'll get to talk to a little people. I get to do a little code, I'll get to talk to a little people. So I think, I think that you're absolutely right. Like that is a good path forward. I think, I guess what I'm trying to sort out, so when I built this thing I built it like to do one very specific thing, right? Like, it was designed to help you get public files from your users onto your site, and I was actually making, I was using it for brochures. We were doing real estate brochures, and people have started using it and all kinds of different ways, and that's been really instructive. So, even that piece of information is interesting, and a good thing to learn. So, yeah, so I think it's just keeping an open mind and making those kinds of changes that are kind of obvious, like, the code pen more accessible as I go forward. That's kind of, kind of my plan. Oh, and I wanted to say, so what I've been doing, I think I read this in your book, too, is I've been recording, obviously, with their permission and then dropping it in Otter.ai to get a transcript, and it's so awesome because now I can just read. It takes me five minutes to read instead of watching the 30 minute video, and I have the information, like, right there at my fingertips. I love that.  Michele Hansen  15:07It's awesome. Yeah, and Otter makes it so easy to do a transcript. It's actually what we use for this podcast. I should totally like, reach out to them and see if they'll sponsor us or something.  Colleen Schnettler  15:19I have a paid subscription.  Michele Hansen  15:21Yeah. Colleen Schnettler  15:21Because I was like, this is so worth it. Like, it's so cool.  Michele Hansen  15:24Yeah, then you could just, like, Colleen Schnettler  15:25That's been, Michele Hansen  15:25Print it out and highlight.  Colleen Schnettler  15:27Yeah, well, that's been such a great way to collate the data, because I was like, okay, if I want to get serious about this and talk to, you know, 15, 20 people, what, am I going to go back and watch all those interviews? I really don't want to. So, that's been a really cool way to get the data. I'm, like, pumped about that. And so, yeah.  Michele Hansen  15:46Yeah, if we were doing this, like in a sort of serious, like corporate, you know, company setting, what you would do is actually like, take all of those transcripts, and then clip out like, specific key phrases and key words, and sentences where someone is really clearly describing their different use case and then, I mean, I feel like there's this sort of this meme about how much like, UX people love post it notes, and like rearranging post it notes on boards. And, like, those, you know, all of those quotes basically end up as post it notes where you're making a timeline of the user's journey through trying to do something, and you're evaluating it on functional social and emotional levels. And like, everyone in the team is like placing post it notes in all of these different areas from all the different interviews. Like you might have one color that you use for a particular customer or a particular interview, for example. It's super time intensive. It's also really fun, and yes, it brings amazing results, but even if you're not doing that, like, even the fact of getting the transcript made, going, reading through it, pulling out the key phrases, and then just, kind of, knowing where to find that information yourself, or like, jotting that down on a card, or whatever that is, wherever you're keeping information so you know what to go back and reference later can be really helpful.  Colleen Schnettler  17:03Yeah, yeah, I'm pumped to go in this customer interview journey, I think I'm going to approach it the way you kind of describe where, of course, I'm not going to not touch the code, like there's going to be, there's going to be both, I'm gonna do them in parallel. But I really want to kind of identify who, who it is I can provide the most value to, and I want to be specific about it. So,  Michele Hansen  17:22Yeah. Colleen Schnettler  17:23That's kind of my goal going forward. And that's going to take a while. I think that's the other thing I have to remember is like, that's not going to happen in a week. That's going to take me a little while. So, Michele Hansen  17:33I mean, in some ways, it's never over. And I don't know if that really, I don't know if that helps you. Like, I don't know if that's something I should tell you now, but like, you know, I'm a firm believer that research should be just part of your ongoing workflow and sort of building this bank of customer understanding that is a living, breathing organism. And it's not that we do a research project for a month and then build stuff for three months, then do a research project. Like, it's just always happening.  Colleen Schnettler  18:00Yeah. Yeah. So speaking of all the wonderful info I got from your book while I was doing these customer interviews, how is the book going?  Michele Hansen  18:09It's good, it's good. I feel like we're, we're getting into the more serious editing phase. I'm kind of, Colleen Schnettler  18:17Didn't you have a picture this morning of like, the book on your desk with a bunch of pens on Twitter?  Michele Hansen  18:21Oh, yeah, I did, I printed it out, and I started reading it, like, as as a book and editing it, and I have four different colors of pens for my editing. And I used to do editing and print layout professionally, and I've sort of volunteer edited other people's books before.  Colleen Schnettler  18:40So random. Michele Hansen  18:41So yeah, no, it was like, stuff I did when I was in college. So, um, so, so yeah, I'm really pumped, because actually, this is a phase of it that I feel like I understand the best. And I know, like I have seen where, you know, there was one book that I helped edit that went on to win a major like, international prize and like, I didn't have anything to do with that, but like it, I saw what that book was in its early stages, and so I know that like, the fact that I'm tearing this to shreds right now is like a normal part of the process, like, and even really amazing books, like they everything starts out in a rough shape. I'm really appreciating how different writing a book is from writing a newsletter, like, how much of a gulf there is between that.  Colleen Schnettler  19:27Yeah. Michele Hansen  19:28Um, but, but I'm having fun. I feel like I have torn like the introduction absolutely to shreds. I mean, I had like four introductory chapters, and like, I think that was too many. Like, I was really burying the lead. So it's good. You know, I've brought in friends who are outside of our little bubble in tech to help me edit who were people that I know who will be harsh and honest with me, and they trust that I'm not going to be offended, and so I'm so grateful to have their help. And I've interviewed about 25 ish people now as part of it. So it's, it's going along. It's good.  Colleen Schnettler  20:11That's awesome. I'm excited. And I also heard, and by heard, I mean, you told me, that you took your live chat widget off of your website.  Michele Hansen  20:22I'm so excited.  Colleen Schnettler  20:23Talk to me about that.  Michele Hansen  20:24Okay, so this, so, this is something that has been building for a while, and for a long time, not not just since we moved here, but for a long time, the pings of live chat have been really stressful for us.  Colleen Schnettler  20:43I imagine.  Michele Hansen  20:44Yeah. And even, like, when we were in the US, like, we were on eastern time, and we would stop working around 4:30 or 5 on any given day, and we would still be getting requests, you know, through eight o'clock at the minimum, because of the West Coast, if not later, because of Hawaii and Alaska. And so we were sort of used to getting pinged from customer support at all hours of the day. It was not necessarily that there's a volume problem, because, so we have this idea that every support ticket only happens once.  Colleen Schnettler  21:18I think you've mentioned that.  Michele Hansen  21:19So this is kind of this principle that we operate on that whenever somebody, whether it's a bug or somebody is confused about something, like, if there's any way that we can make something clearer, or fix something, or basically prevent that ticket from ever happening again, we do that. So nothing gets closed until it's fixed. And, and so we operate on that principle, and that has really reduced our support volume over the years. But also, but still throughout that, and I think especially being on a European timezone serving North American customers like, that gets really difficult because you know, our daughter gets out of school at three o'clock, and then our customers wake up at three o'clock, and then it's just, like, it's just chaos, and having live chat specifically, like, people don't know when they can expect to get a live response versus when they have to wait. And I have experimented with so many different versions of copy on the little live chat widget, and none of them really seem to communicate that it's, like, it may not actually be live.  Colleen Schnettler  22:30Okay.  Michele Hansen  22:31And then on the flip side, some other people assume it's a robot and like, don't even use it.  Colleen Schnettler  22:35Yeah, that's me. But keep going. Michele Hansen  22:37I've seen that come up in usability testing, like, when I've had people screen share, and go through our site. So um, you know, a couple months ago, I was telling this to some founder friends, and what, what came out of it was basically, you know, live chat was really important for our growth, especially in the early days, like, I'm thinking like, like, 2016, 17, 18, especially when we're going full time. And, but the things that you do to grow are not necessarily the things you have to do to maintain and be a stable business, right? You know, we're growing. Like, we grew 56% last year, even though we didn't really try to, but growth is not what we optimize for. We optimize for stability. And so those things that we did in the early days to grow, like, could use different tactics now, and where the live chat kind of stresses us out and doesn't work for our family, but also like, it creates this expectation mismanagement with our customers. And people are still getting a reply directly from the founders, and just this morning, somebody emailed us, and then we got back to them an hour later. And then the response we got back was, "Wow, I'm so amazed that you were able to give me a helpful answer so quickly." And like, that was an hour versus immediate, and they still had that, like, positive reaction. So, we just did this the other day, we'll see how it goes. But, but I'm kind of nervous, excited, relieved all the same.  Colleen Schnettler  24:14So you still have the widget, it just says,  Michele Hansen  24:18No, we got rid of the widget. We removed the widget.  So there's no widget at all? Yeah, I mean, it's still, like, popping up in random places. So we were like, going through the codebase and trying to find all the different places we have that launcher. But, no, but we're still using intercom and the platform, like, so all the email is still coming into intercom, but we don't have the live chat bubble in the corner, and we don't have any prompts that say, you know, contact us if you have a billing question. Like, if you click on Contact Us, it doesn't pull up intercom chat widget. It instead creates an email.  Colleen Schnettler  24:50Okay, so if I am on your site, and I want to contact you, I now have to scroll to the bottom to the footer, or wherever, click contact us, and that'll pop up in my email so I can email you? Michele Hansen  25:00It's in the header. And,  Colleen Schnettler  25:01Okay, but,  Michele Hansen  25:02And then it's,  Colleen Schnettler  25:02Okay.  Michele Hansen  25:03It lists all the different emails. Yeah.  Colleen Schnettler  25:06Now tell me about some concerns you have about making this.  Michele Hansen  25:09I think I, like, a concern I have is that, you know, people will be upset, right, that they may have expected an immediate response before. But, you know, at the same time, like, most of our long term customers, like, they email us anyway. And actually, most of them have our personal emails, and like, they don't expect an immediate response. You know, our, when I was talking to those friends a couple of months ago, they were like, "You guys are providing way too high of a quality of customer service. Like, I know that you guys pride yourselves on it. Like, even doing the customer support as the founders yourselves is so far beyond what most companies do, nevermind doing it live 24/7." Like, they're like, that's that, that doesn't make sense. And like, you guys can be, you know, be gentle with yourselves, basically. Um, you know, people have been like, "Why don't you just hire someone?" And the problem with it is that because we have solved all of the easy support problems, like, the ones we do get are fairly complicated. And if someone else were to take this over, they would need to be a support engineer, who, you know, is capable of debugging people's problems, but also like, able to negotiate contracts and do billing issues and like, like, they would need to somehow be a clone of the two of us. And it doesn't really seem reasonable. So, so yeah, I think, and again, it's, it's not the volume, that it's the problem, it was really that cadence. It's when someone is, you know, chatting and saying, "Hi, are you there?"  Colleen Schnettler  26:47Right. Michele Hansen  26:48Is the API working? My API key, my API key is, you know, it's doing this like, and it's like, and it's like, every, like one like, ping every minute versus someone sending us an email that's like, hey, like, so we're trying to use it earlier, and then this is what happens, and here's the error message. Like, people tend to be much more verbose and email. So,  Colleen Schnettler  27:05Yes. Michele Hansen  27:06I'm nervous. But we'll see, we'll see how it goes. I think that this is, you know, an adjustment that we need to make. Colleen Schnettler  27:13I don't think anyone will care. I think you will get absolutely no, I think this is all upside for you. I mean, it's gonna be so good for your quality of life. I don't, I literally don't think anyone's gonna care. I mean, I think you're gonna find that it doesn't have any impact on your business.  Michele Hansen  27:29We'll see. We'll see. But, you know, we're kind of operating under that idea that the things that we needed to do to grow, are not necessarily the same things that you do to, when you have a stable, secure business.  Colleen Schnettler  27:43Yeah.  Michele Hansen  27:44Yeah. Which is kind of weird, like, also in the software world, cuz I feel like, you know, we talk about this all the time, that if you're trying to build a, you know, sort of, quote, unquote, like, Calm company, right, like, you're not going down the unicorn route. Like, like most of the advice and growth tactics, and everything out, like, business advice is geared towards those companies that want to be huge, and less so towards us little one, two person companies. Like, the things that make sense for us, or, you know, we have a totally different set of incentives and resources and constraints and goals. Like, all those things are so different, that the fact that we're all in software is, is almost sort of beside the point.  Colleen Schnettler  28:29It is complete, it is wild, isn't it? Like how different the tactics are.  Michele Hansen  28:34Like we have more in common with a small retail business, but we also don't fit in with them because we're not a physical business. Like, it's like, I don't know, small SaaS. We're like, we're just a weird breed, man. Yeah.  Colleen Schnettler  28:50Well, I hope it I hope it alleviate some of that pressure and stress. I imagine, especially with the timezone issues since you guys have moved, that's got to be just challenging.  Michele Hansen  29:02Yeah, my friends who also, you know, run SaaS's out of Europe with North American customers, like, I have talked to them a little bit about this and they're like, yeah, yeah, it's, it's, it's tough. It's really tough. Colleen Schnettler  29:18Yeah, definitely. Awesome. Well, I'm, I'm glad. I think, I feel like, this is gonna work for you. Michele Hansen  29:25We'll see. Maybe in six months we'll be like, oh my god, we don't have any new customers and everybody cancelled because we don't have the chat thing, but I hope not.  Colleen Schnettler  29:33I mean, honestly, and I know you said they, they come in two groups, but I just assumed there will not be a person on the other side of the chat widget. So, if I hit your chat widget, I just assume I'm going to send you an email. You know what I mean? I think you'll be fine.   Michele Hansen  29:47Yeah, I think people have totally different expectations. And what we have tried to communicate is that we're not making it harder to contact us, like we're not, you know, offshoring our support. Like, you can still go to the header and click, like, contact. You can still email us, like, it's still the two founders doing the support. It's just one of the tools we use for that is going away.  Colleen Schnettler  30:13Yeah, cool. I can't wait to hear an update on how that goes. All right. Well, I guess that'll wrap us up for this week. Thank you so much for listening. If you enjoyed this episode, please tweet about it. That always makes us happy, and we love hearing what you think.

Jesus summoned the crowd again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile.” Mark 7:14–15What is within you? What is in your heart? Today’s Gospel concludes with a list of vices that sadly come from within: “evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly.” Of course, none of these vices are desirable when looked at objectively. They are all quite repulsive. And yet too often they are sins that people deal with on a regular basis to one extent or another.Take greed, for example. When understood clearly, no one wants to be known as one who is greedy. It’s a shameful attribute to have. But when greed is not looked at as greed, it’s easy to fall into the trap of living it. One who is greedy desires an excessive amount of this or that. More money, a better house, a nicer car, more luxurious vacations, etc. Thus, when a person is acting in a greedy way, greed does not seem undesirable. It’s only when greed is looked at in an objective way that it is understood for what it is.In this Gospel, by naming this long list of vices, Jesus does us an incredible act of mercy. He rattles us and calls us to step back and look at sin for what it is. Jesus also makes it clear that when you live one or more of these vices, you become defiled. You become greedy, a liar, cruel, a gossip, hateful, arrogant, etc. Objectively speaking, no one wants this. What is it in that list of vices that you struggle with the most? What do you see within your own heart? Be honest with yourself before God. Jesus desires that your heart be pure and holy, freed from these and every filth. But unless you are able to look at your own heart with honesty, it will be difficult to reject the sin with which you struggle.Reflect, today, upon this list of sins identified by our Lord. Consider each one and allow yourself to see each sin for what it truly is. Allow yourself to despise these sins with a holy wrath and then turn your eyes to that sin with which you struggle the most. Know that as you consciously see that sin and reject it, our Lord will begin to strengthen you and purify your heart so that you become freed from that defilement and become, instead, the beautiful child of God you were made to be.My merciful Lord, help me to see sin for what it is. Help me, especially, to see my own sin—that sin within my own heart that defiles me as Your dear child. As I see my sin, give me the grace I need to reject it and to turn to You with all my heart so that I can become a new creation in Your grace and mercy. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2021 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

In this teaching we'll learn that Paul speaks to the Corinthian Christians from his heart because he has felt uncommon sympathy towards them, 2 Corinthians 6:11-182 Corinthians 6:11-18 (NLT) 11Oh, dear Corinthian friends! We have spoken honestly with you, and our hearts are open to you. 12There is no lack of love on our part, but you have withheld your love from us. 13I am asking you to respond as if you were my own children. Open your hearts to us!14Don't team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? 15What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever? 16And what union can there be between God's temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said: “I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 17Therefore, come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the LORD. Don't touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you. 18And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the LORD Almighty.”

“And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”  John 3:14-15What a glorious feast we celebrate today!  It’s the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross!Does the Cross truly make sense?  If we could separate ourselves from all we have learned about the Cross of Christ and just look at it from a secular and historical perspective, the Cross is a sign of great tragedy.  It’s connected to the story of a man who became quite popular with many, yet was vehemently hated by others.  In the end, those who hated this man arranged for His brutal crucifixion.  So, from a purely secular point of view, the Cross is an awful thing. But Christians do not see the Cross from a secular point of view.  We see it from the divine perspective.  We see Jesus lifted up on the Cross for all to see.  We see Him using horrible suffering to eliminate suffering forever.  We see Him using death to destroy death itself.  Ultimately, we see Jesus become victorious on that Cross and, therefore, forever we see the Cross as an exalted and glorious throne!    Moses’ actions in the desert prefigured the Cross.  Many people were dying from snake bites. Therefore, God told Moses to lift up the image of a snake on a pole so that all who looked upon it would be healed.  And that’s exactly what happened.  Ironically, the snake brought life instead of death!Suffering occurs throughout our lives in various ways.  Perhaps for some it’s daily aches and pains from ill health, and for others it may be on a much deeper level, such as an emotional, personal, relational or spiritual one.  Sin, in fact, is the cause of the greatest suffering, so those who struggle deeply with sin in their lives suffer deeply from that sin.So what is Jesus’ answer?  His answer is to turn our gaze to His Cross.  We are to look at Him in His misery and suffering and, in that gaze, we are called to see victory with faith.  We are called to know that God brings good out of all things, even our suffering.  The Father transformed the world eternally through the suffering and death of His only Son.  He also wants to transform us in our crosses.Reflect, today, upon the Cross of Christ.  Spend some time gazing upon the crucifix.  See in that crucifix the answer to your own daily struggles.  Jesus is close to those who suffer, and His strength is available to all those who believe in Him.Lord, help me to gaze upon the Cross.  Help me to experience in Your own sufferings a taste of Your final victory.  May I be strengthened and healed as I look upon You.  Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2020 My Catholic Life! Harvest Bible Chapel Pittsburgh North Sermons - Harvest Bible Chapel Pittsburgh North

Introduction: Odds: 4-1 God's 2-Step Plan for Your Victory (Judges 7:1-15): Lose your Self-Confidence . (Judges 7:1-8) Isaiah 42:8 - I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no other... God gave 2 tests to Gideon's already way-outnumbered army: Test #1: Are you Afraid ? (Judges 7:3) Odds: 13-1 Duet 20:8 - And the officers shall speak further to the people, and say, Is there any man who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go back to his house, lest he make the heart of his fellows melt like his own. Test #2: Are you paying Attention . (Judges 7:7) Odds: 450-1 Put your confidence in God . (Judges 7:9-15) 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 - Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. Sermon Notes (PDF): BLANKHint: Highlight blanks above for answers! Small Group DiscussionRead Judges 7:1-15What was your big “take-away” from this passage / message? Why did God reduce Gideon’s army? Why do you think He did it in stages (32k to 10k to 300) instead of just doing it all at once?Isaiah 42:8 says “I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no other…” (See also Isaiah 48:11) How would you respond to someone who says, “Isn’t it egotistical of God to demand all the glory?” In Judges 7:9-14, why did God let Gideon spy “if he was afraid” (Judges 7:10)? Since Gideon was obviously still afraid (made clear by Gideon taking God up on His offer), why didn’t Gideon get sent home with all of the other fearful soldiers earlier (Judges 7:3)?BreakoutPray for one another, specifically that God would remove all self-confidence and teach us to find all of our confidence in Him!

What You’ll Learn From This Episode: Why it’s important to master one platform first for generating traffic How effective is finding 3 people online as your potential clients How can you start creating a massive momentum challenge Related Links and Resources: It's an actual workbook that helps you think how to start and set up your 6-figure online coaching business. And that URL is www.luisazhou.com/gift Summary: Luisa Zhou is the creator of the Employee to Entrepreneur system, which teaches people how to leave their day job and start their own six-figure plus business working for themselves. She’s helped thousands of students to launch their own businesses that generate anywhere from 30K to 100K in less than a year. Her advice has been featured in numerous online and print publications including Forbes, Inc, Entrepreneur, Success magazine, and more. Here are the highlights of this episode: 1:19 Luisa’s ideal Client: My ideal client is someone who has a history of success; whether it's a corporate career or maybe an offline business but is looking to go online and really build a lean, profitable business for themselves. 1:46Problem Luisa helps solve: The principle problem aside from really figuring out what to offer, how to stand out, and how to really make sure it's really something that's going to sell. After we nail all that, it's really about how do you stand out from many websites or social media profiles out there. 2:25Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Luisa: So, there are a few. The first is frustration; frustration by saying "look, I know that I'm really good in what I do, I have the career, the offline business, or whatever to show for, but why is it so hard?! It shouldn't be this hard!". And " what's going on, I'm doing all the stuff but where's the results?". That's really the number one symptom. There's also overwhelmed; there's the tags, the funnels, email marketing, everything.. "How do I go about doing it?". I would say that these are the two top emotions. 3:15What are some of the common mistakes that folks make before finding Luisa and her solution: One of the common mistakes is throwing stuff on the wall, trying to generate traffic and hoping something sticks. Maybe you do one post on Instagram, you do one on Facebook, and you do one on LinkedIn. And at the end of the day, you wonder why nothing has grown. It's really because you need to double down on one traffic source and figure out how to master it before you focus on anything else. The other mistake that I see a lot is not having the backend systems to support any new traffic. That's the secondary problem. So, solve the traffic problem first but what I do see, is that people started building an audience but they don't really have the way to handle sales or deliver on clients. So now they're hustling 24/7 not only to continue generating traffic but also to support the sales that they're making. And it's all about figuring out what's one product I can really just knock out of the park, how can I deliver that in a scalable way. Once I got that, I'm not going to fiddle with the backend anymore, I'm going to focus on getting more leads and sales. 4:41Luisa’s Valuable Free Action (VFA): One thing that I would recommend doing is finding 3 people who are your potential clients online. For example, if you are working with people who are decision makers in the corporation, go on deal with them. Go any different areas. Maybe you are in a Facebook group, maybe your audience is on Instagram, those are really some of the most common ones. Reach out to three people. It doesn't have to be "hey, I'm so and so.. this is how I can help you. Do you want to buy from me?", it can be as simple as "hey I saw you ask this question about this thing that I can help with. I'm happy to chat with you a little bit more, provide some advice for free, and if you're interested, we can talk about how I can support you further".

REWIND: Grace for the Gaps

Purpose Without Apology

A lot of women, especially mothers, struggle with the feeling that we're never quite good enough. In this episode, you'll learn that no matter how many mistakes you make, God always gives “grace for the gaps.”What is grace? In many church traditions, grace is defined as “getting the good things that you don’t deserve,” while mercy is “not getting the bad things that you do deserve.”My favorite definition comes from a former pastor of mine. He defined grace as “God doing for us what we can’t do for ourselves.”Reference Scriptures:2 Corinthians 12:8-9Ephesians 2:8-9Romans 5:15What is “the gap”?“The gap” is the place where your best efforts fail. You can only get so far in your own strength before you either burn out or give up or both. This could be anything from losing patience with your toddler to juggling the needs of a blended family to struggling with chronic illness. The gap is where you realize your need for God. It doesn’t have to be rock bottom, but it often is. Fortunately, God makes His grace available to us in a variety of ways (Hebrews 4:16):It helps us to endure things that are uniquely hard (2 Corinthians 12:8-9). It empowers us to serve and do other good things we normally couldn’t (1 Peter 4:10).It literally makes salvation possible (Ephesians 2:8-9).What does this mean?We don’t have to be afraid of experiencing hardship, because God promises that He will sustain us.We also don’t have to be afraid to take a “leap of faith” and try something new, because God will equip us. He did all the work to help us “get” saved and “keep” our salvation. What inspired this episode:Recently, my son was sick with pneumonia, and of course, I put a lot of things on the back burner so I could take care of him. One of those things was this podcast. I fell behind and didn't release an episode last week.At first, I felt guilty about failing to keep my commitment, but then I realized the importance of giving myself grace and receiving grace from a God who loves me. As women, we don't have to be perfect; God gives us the grace to be human, and we should do the same for ourselves.Action Step: What are some areas of your life where you need an extra measure of grace right now? List them and pray about them in detail over the next 7 days.

This week we are exploring the option of joining the family business as a career choice. Siobhán Murphy, DCU Careers Advisor is joined by Eric Clinton, Associate Professor in Entrepreneurship in DCU and Director of the National Centre for Family Business, DCU Business School to discuss this topic.Show notes0:06- 0:45IntroductionSiobhán Murphy, Careers Advisor DCU introduces the topic of joining the family business and Eric Clinton, Associate Professor in Entrepreneurship and Director of National Centre for Family Business, DCU Business School.0:45 - 5:20What is the family business Landscape in Ireland?64% of our firms are family businesses. This does not include family farms. When you include this, it brings it up to approx 80%. Agriculture is an important part of our economy. These family businesses are in every town and village in Ireland. 50% of GDP comes from family businesses and more than 50% of employment comes from family businesses. Look at the sponsorship of local GAA/Scouting/local charity and how it also provides a contribution to wider society. However, there are greater numbers of family businesses in other EU countries ie France and Italy. 5:20 - 11:15What to consider when looking at joining the family business First thing is to be honest with yourself. Important to understand your own passion.  If you want to go into a different profession - do so. You can of course be an owner without being involved in the family business. Consider working outside of the family business and gain different experiences. Some family businesses are multi-generational and they have learned how important it is to gain experience outside of the family business. Manor Farm has a rule that family members must work outside for five years in a managerial role and must be interviewed before joining the family firm. Consider working abroad and keep connected  with the family business. Join a network of next generation family businesses to have a support group.11:30 17:45Family dynamics, work life balance - the tightropeRecent events with Covid have resulted in succession happening sooner than expected which is challenging for all involved. Eric suggests structure and formalisation and avoiding the kitchen table being the boardroom. It can get dysfunctional very quickly. Take what you learn from university and take those best practices back into the family business. Firstly, use your parents first names in the workplace to change the dynamics of the relationship ie John instead of Dad. Try to avoid bringing the business back into the family home where at all possible. Working with siblings can also be challenging. Almost the worst thing to do is equally divide the wealth and there should be a conversation about ownership - one option is a co-CEO. Dynamics of children and grudges can prevail. Needs to be a method to manage these situations.17:45 - 22:15What are the joys of joining a family business?Legacy and a sense of pride are key. The business comes with capital and this is a huge advantage with a potential to invest. It can mean that there is a diversification opportunity. Eric reflects on the Keogh Family Business and how they have diversified but were always innovative. Being responsive and innovative is what is important for each generation.22:15 -24:00Are you family first business or business first family business?Legacy can be good but also pressure. Knowing how and when to sell etc is important and need to move to the mindset of the business first family business. Commercial decisions have to be made. Have to be willing to make hard decisions.24:00- 27:00You successfully joined the firm - but you now want to do different things and leaveEric explains that one of the most important things to do is set up structures to keep the business fit and healthy. One of the key pieces of advice is to have a shareholder's agreement. This covers how the wealth is passed on and how shares can be sold.27:00- 33:45Adopting career planning approaches to the family businessIn career planning a sense of place is important and which for many can be in a number of places around the world. There is an opportunity as the world has got smaller to work in the family business but from a different part of the country/world. It is about thinking differently and laterally and not always assuming that you need to situate yourself locally. Eric provides a number of examples of how this has arisen for family businesses in Ireland either through circumstance or through innovation. Irish family businesses are in all parts of the world.33:45 -37:15Summing up & Eric's Top TipSiobhan & Eric sum up. Eric's top tip is to have an honest conversation with yourself, get a mentor outside of the family business, gain experience outside of the business, see the world and upskill before joining the family business.

There has not been time yet to reflect fully on working during this time as she is too busy and focussed on the job in hand. It will take time.26:15 - 37:30Sinéad's personal story of contracting Covid 19Sinéad explains her initial symptoms, going to the test centre and sharing the news with her family. The family had to work closely together to ensure that she was looked after but also prevent anyone else getting it. No other member of her family contracted the virus. To explain how easy for this virus to spread she suggested to think of it like glitter and how that gets everywhere!37:30 - 41:15What is the future of nursing?Sinéad explains that respect for the profession has grown and that she hopes this will continue. For Sinéad, her eye is on the prize of successfully completing her programme this September and working on building up and rounding out her experience. There are so many specialisations available in nursing and in time she will consider a postgraduate course, but first wants to get additional experience.41:15- 44:04Sinéad shares her top tipsSinéad encourages those who want to pursue nursing to try it. It will be hard at times. You will have fears and anxieties but these can be overcome through experience and support of friends. It is about whether the struggles are worth it for you.

And solopreneurs are those people and sales teams, so I help both. 2:19Problem Aleasha helps solve: Most people are trying too hard to sell. I help with sales and marketing and a lot of times, those two don't talk to each other. Sales is the frontline of your marketing, they hear the objections that the people are really having, the response to the products, and the things that they want. And a lot of times, the two are at odds with each other. Because marketing will pre-frame the client for a sales call. Also, what they understand about the product and service comes from the marketing. So, I definitely help with that piece of it and that is a big one, there's a lot of gaps there usually. It's a unique thing to do as a sales coach. But I also help sales team perform better. 3:32Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Aleasha: They should've closed, why didn't they close. That's the thing that they often saying. The Sales Manager are saying these people should've closed, they were perfect fit. Or the sales people are saying oh my gosh, these leads are so far off from our customer. Or the solopreneurs saying it make perfect sense, why didn't they close. 4:15What are some of the common mistakes that folks make before finding Aleasha and his solution: I would say one of the biggest mistakes is not connecting what you're selling to the person's end goal. A lot of people will talk about features of their programs and benefits. For example, I was working for a paid search company, and they will tell people this audit that they did..it sounds boring already. You want to say something like it's an audit, so we want to make sure that you getting the most leads for the less amount of money. A lot of people just don't connect those dots. I have a metaphor, if you invited your friend to a game, they've never been to a game of basketball and they don't know anything about it, and you tried to explained the rules, they will be like I don't want to go anymore. Too many people are explaining the rules of the game instead of making it sound like a good time. 5:45Aleasha’s Valuable Free Action (VFA): The biggest thing you can do is to get out of your head; and understand the person across from you is a mother, brother, father, son.. human who's having a day, it might have been a good day or bad day, they've got stuffs going on later, and you are not a gross sales person, you are also a mother, brother, father, son. It's two people coming together to see if they can solve a problem that one of them is having. And this person hopes you're going to be able to solve it.

(John 6:7-9) Matthew 18:2-4 - And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." You need to Thank God ahead of time. (John 6:10-13) John 11:41 - And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me..." Mark 11:24 - Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Colossians 4:2 - Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. The provision itself isn't the Endgame . (John 6:14-15) Deuteronomy 18:18 - I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. Jesus enjoined them, “Watch out, guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”  Mark 8:15What is this “leaven” Jesus is speaking of?  After giving this warning to His disciples, Jesus then gives an explanation to them of what He means and what He doesn’t mean.  But even the explanation seems to be over their heads.  So He concludes by saying, “Do you still not understand?”  To this day, Jesus is still asking this question to each one of us.This was certainly Jesus trying to get them to think, to listen and to look deeper.  He was warning them, “Watch out!”  Watch out for this leaven.  It’s a warning of love to help them see and understand a very real danger.Everyone who bakes bread knows the effect of just a little leaven (such as yeast) in the dough.  Add just a little bit and it affects the whole loaf.  If a child is helping with the baking, this child may return several times, watching the dough rise little by little.  It can become a fascinating thing to watch.  And it all resulted from just this little yeast. So what is this leaven of the Pharisees and Herod?  It’s the evil words, evil intent and errors that they spread.  For the Pharisees, it may be that it’s just a little misconception or misrepresentation of what Jesus said or did.  They may twist His words or may simply give non-verbal opinions to others.  This is contagious and has potential to affect everyone.  Little by little their small seeds of doubt and dissent take a toll on others. We may tend to be thinking about all of “those” people we know who do this.  But we’d miss an important opportunity for growth if we failed to first look at ourselves.  Do I do this sometimes?  Do I say things that mislead in small or subtle ways?  Or do I mislead others by my non-verbal negative attitudes?  Am I a “negative person” sometimes? No need to feel guilty or get down on ourselves if we feel convicted.  Rather, we should look at this little lesson of Jesus to realize the great power of our words.  The smallest of words can do great harm over time.  But that’s not all we should focus on.  It’s just as important to realize that the small loving words we say also have potential to make a huge difference over time.  Perhaps it’s just that small smile we give or a kind action that we think goes unnoticed.  These little actions and words are the leaven of the Gospel.  They do make a difference and they can become contagious, also.  Reflect, today, upon the small things in life.  Know that these small sins and small acts of love make a huge difference in the end.Lord, help me to be honest and see what sort of leaven I sow each and every day.  Help me to be purged of the bad and filled with the good.  May You inspire me to be that good leaven in all the many daily interactions I have.  Jesus, I trust in You.Source: catholic-daily-reflections.com

Grace for the Gaps

The Gifts of Tongues and Interpretation - November 2, 2019 - Steve MillerAs I was praying about this message some time ago, I felt like the Lord gave me three analogies to illustrate the purpose of speaking or praying in tongues.Lighter fluid – Sometimes conditions aren't ideal for starting a fire. Lighter fluid (or “boy scout water,” as my brother and nephew call it) gives your fire a “supernatural” boost.A key – There's no way to enter through a locked door, but a key is a small but precisely effective way to open the way that was impossible without it.A spark plug – You can have a perfectly designed car, plenty of good fuel, and plenty of air being mixed precisely right, but without the spark plug firing, fuel won't ignite so you've got no power. Spark plugs need to keep firing consistently for your car to keep running powerfully over the long haul.Acts 2:4 - All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 10:44-46 - 44While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles. 46For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.Acts 19:6 - When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.I want to start out by saying that I believe that at least some form of the gift of tongues is available for every believer. Later in the message, we'll look at distinctions between different varieties of tongues or functions of the gift, and what Paul means in 1 Corinthians 12 when he asks “Do all speak with tongues?” (The implied answer is “no.”) And we do not teach that a person needs to speak in tongues in order to be a true Christian or to be baptized with the Holy Spirit. But in the three passages above, it's pretty clear that in these three groups of early believers, all involved received an ability to speak in tongues, not just a selected few. So let's start by looking at the nature and purpose of speaking in tongues, which tends to seem like a strange and ambiguous activity to us in the first place.Did you ever wonder why the Holy Spirit enables believers to speak in tongues and what is going on when we do?When we speak in tongues, who is speaking? We are speaking. The Holy Spirit is speaking. (See the verses above.)It's a cooperative effort. When we speak in tongues, the Holy Spirit is providing words for us to speak, bypassing our cognitive thinking process. Therefore, it's not unreasonable to say that when we speak in tongues we are declaring the Word of God. We are speaking truth. The words we speak are just the right ones, for they come from the Holy Spirit, our Helper. So when we speak in tongues, just what are we speaking?1 Corinthians 14:1-2 - Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. 2For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. When we speak in tongues, we speak to God. He understands what we are praying even though we don't.Strong's: mustérion (moos-tay'-ree-on): a mystery, secret, of which initiation is necessary; in the NT: the counsels of God, once hidden but now revealed in the Gospel or some fact thereof; the Christian revelation generally; particular truths or details of the Christian revelation. HELPS Word-studies: mystḗrion (the root of the English term, "mystery") – mystery. In the Bible, a "mystery" is not something unknowable. Rather, it is what can only be known through revelation, i.e. because God reveals it. This agrees with what Jesus said about sending the Holy Spirit:John 16:12-15 - 12 I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you. According to Jesus, one of the Holy Spirit's main purposes is to reveal truth to us. How much? He has all the thoughts and wisdom and powerful Word that belongs to the Father and Jesus! And Jesus promised that the Spirit will take of what is His and declare it to us. That's rich.1 Corinthians 14:13-17 - 13Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret. 14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also. 16Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? 17For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up. It's reasonable to ask the Spirit to give you interpretation or understanding of the things you pray in tongues. In 1 Corinthians 14, Paul makes it clear that an interpretation is necessary if someone gives a prayer or message in tongues in the public meeting. But if we ask, we should expect that the Holy Spirit will give us some interpretation when we pray in tongues privately, especially since Jesus said that communicating revelation from God to us is one of His chief activities. It's definitely prayer, or communication with God.It can be thanksgiving and praise to God.We can be declaring the wonders of God. Acts 2:11 – (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!I believe that this declaration in tongues is not just limited to praising God for the wonders that He has done in the past, although that is powerful. It also includes declaring what He is doing now in the present, as well as what He will do in the future. In this way, we can be making declarations prophetically and speaking life and God's will into situations with His authority, which will bring powerful and transformational results. It can be used in intercession.John Bevere shares a story of a young woman he led into the baptism of the Holy Spirit in college at Purdue University. The Spirit awoke her the next morning and impressed her to pray in tongues. While doing so, she asked the Spirit to give her an idea of what she was praying about, and the impression came that she was praying for an older man in a life-and-death emergency. Later, after feeling a release that she was finished, she soon discovered that she had been praying for her roommate's grandfather who had suffered a heart attack at exactly that time, and that his life had been saved.A parent at our school tells about a dream that she had in which she was praying in tongues about a car crash that happened, and the next day she saw in the news that a similar accident had actually happened during that night, and the parties involved had survived.Ephesians 6:18 - And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people. What kinds of speaking or praying in tongues are there? Can any believer potentially have this gift, or just selected ones of us?Now, doesn't 1 Corinthians 12 teach that we all have differing gifts? It asks, "Do all speak in tongues?" The implied answer is "no." But what particular gift of tongues is that referring to? David Pytches, in his book Spiritual Gifts in the Local Church, explains that the Bible shows different types or uses the gift of tongues:"There are apparently three distinct manifestations in the area of 'tongues': The use of tongues where utterance is not understood by the speaker, but overheard by members of the public, and, without interpretation, understood by those whose own language it is.This is tongues used as a sign, like happened in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost.Cathy tells about young Mark and Mike Knudsen understanding a word in tongues given in the service here several weeks after they had been adopted from India.John Bevere tells of a woman on his staff who sat near the back of a service while he was preaching, and in a relatively quiet voice, prayed in tongues for him. After the service had ended, the man sitting in front of her turned around and said, “Ma'am, may I say that your French is excellent!” She responded that she didn't speak French. He replied that he was a French teacher, and throughout the service she had been speaking perfect French in a special, very old dialect. In fact, every time she would speak something in French, John would follow by preaching the same idea in English! The use of 'tongues' in public worship. The 'language' used is unknown and should be followed by an interpretation given by the Holy Spirit. The use of 'tongues' in private which needs no interpretation, though apparently this could be asked for. Most of those who use the gift in private have never exercised it in public worship. Public exercise is a distinct anointing, yet a link between the public and private use appears to exist, i.e. any person who exercises the gift of tongues in public almost invariably uses the gift in private."What are the benefits or fruit of praying in tongues?1 Corinthians 14:4 - The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.· Jude 20-21 - 20But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.· You are built up, or edified (as in building a house), when you pray in tongues.· Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, so it's not unreasonable to expect that praying in tongues can bring healing, refreshment, rest to our bodies. Busy ministers testify that regular prayer in tongues helps prevent them from burnout.· Joseph Prince shared this testimony: “Doris, a young woman from Singapore, shared how she started to worry when her menstrual cycle stopped. For two years, she believed God for restoration of a regular cycle and described how her journey was like a roller coaster ride with some very low points when it got really difficult to stay in faith.“One day, she watched a sermon I had preached on praying in tongues. In that video, I taught on how tongues was like rivers of living water flowing out of the belly, pushing out defilement, edifying the spirit, and repairing the house of God — our bodies. She remembered how I had shared that the word for “belly” was also the word for “womb,” and she started to pray often in the Spirit every day and to partake of the Holy Communion each morning.“Doris shared, ‘This has become part of my morning routine. Through it, I have grown closer to the Lord in my spirit and I feel such shalom-peace in my heart every day. I also experienced my restoration after more than two years! Praise Jesus!'”· Joseph Prince continues: “Now please don't think that in talking about physical healing, I am downplaying the importance of building up your inner man ... Many times, when it comes to healing, God goes to the root first, removing your deep-seated fears, anxieties, past hurts, and erroneous beliefs — mental strongholds that need to be demolished — before He deals with your physical body. The medical profession has been telling people how chronic stress, worry, fears, and depression can lead to all kinds of physical ailments. So, certainly, take full advantage of praying in the Spirit to fortify your inner man and build yourself up in faith and in the love of God (ref.: Jude 1:20–21). But as you do, be cognisant of the truth that praying in tongues can also repair your physical body. God wants you whole in every way, inside out!”· In her book Chasing the Dragon, Jackie Pullinger tells about how she ministered to heroin addicts in Hong Kong in the 1970's. When these new, Spirit-filled believers experienced the awful withdrawal symptoms, they were told to pray in their prayer language, and as long as they did, the symptoms went away. In this way, they were able to be delivered from heroin addiction.· Praying in tongues seems to be a key for receiving inspiration from the Holy Spirit. Jesus said that He had much more to say to us, but that when the Holy Spirit comes, He will guide us into all truth. John Bevere talks about how, as he is writing his books, if he gets stuck, he will take time to pray in the Spirit, and as he does, inspired ideas and words will start coming into his mind. He tells a story about a time he was preaching in Mexico, and just before the meeting his host found out about some unexpected trouble from the local authorities. John went outside and prayed in tongues, and the Lord gave him specific direction about what to preach. The authorities who came to break up the meeting ended up getting saved.· John Bevere tells of very busy ministers who testify that regular praying in tongues brings them rest and refreshment that helps them avoid burnout. · Joseph Prince teaches about this rest effect of praying in tongues: “It is not just the daily demands and responsibilities of family and work that are stressing us out. We have an enemy called the devil and one of his objectives is to “wear out the saints of the most High” (Daniel 7:25, KJV). He does this by stirring up storms in our lives (quarrels, crises, stressful situations), planting anxious thoughts in our minds, and invoking in us feelings of inadequacy and panic. Many times, we respond by leaning on our own efforts to manage and solve a hundred and one things! After a while of running around trying to do this and that to make things work, we end up mentally and physically exhausted, ready to just fall apart.“Friend, if I have just described you, I want you to know that God did not design you to live a life of stress but to enjoy a life of rest. He has given you a powerful weapon to counter stress: praying in the Spirit, which is able to rebuild and repair your entire self from the inside out. It costs you nothing, has no bad side effects, and isn't dependent on external factors such as a quiet surrounding with mood lighting and soothing pan flute music. Tranquil environments are great — I myself like to take long walks in the park or along the beach. But what happens when you “come back to reality,” to the sound of blaring car horns, or your kids throwing their toys around and screaming at each other?“You need something that is more robust and goes deeper — God's peace that surpasses understanding. And you can come to this wonderful place of rest and refreshing as you pray in tongues and sense His presence and love. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (ref.: 2 Corinthians 3:17). Let His Spirit free you from stress, worry, and anxiety as you unwind through your heavenly language.“Perhaps you already know how to pray in the Sprit, but for some time now, you have not exercised this wonderful grace gift. Can I encourage you to start doing it again? “Beloved, the Lord beckons you to draw near to Him today as you pray in the Spirit. He invites you to come to Him if your heart is full of labour and heavy with worry, and He Himself will rest you (ref.: Matthew 11:28). Let Him drive out all fear and confusion.”· The edifying effects of speaking in tongues tend to be different from one person to another. Larry Christenson, in his book Speaking in Tongues, wrote: “When you get closer to people who have had this experience, and watch them over a longer period of time, you actually discover great variety in their experiences. Perhaps the working of the gift is something like this: As a person prays in tongues, he is edified – built up – in that part of his life where he most needs building up. This would seem consistent with the working of the Holy Spirit, for He always deals with us as individuals.”· Christensen reports of one woman who experienced a building up of her assurance of salvation, which had previously been an area of struggle. Another man reported that through tongues the Holy Spirit took away some habits that would have been hard to do by himself, such as smoking cigarettes. One evening, after work, he lit up a cigarette. “All at once,” he told, “that cigarette tasted so lousy it made me sick. I thought it was because I had a big cold in my head. I spit it out of my mouth – and I haven't touched one since. I tell you, the Lord just took that habit out of me by the roots. Man, when the Lord cleans you out, He really cleans you out good!”· Cathy and I have both experienced times in our lives when we've been attacked by irrational fears or phobias. At those times, when we have prayed in tongues, we've both experienced calming and peace as we did so.· Christensen again: “The edification which one experiences through the exercise of speaking in tongues is on a highly individual basis. Your own program of sanctification is tailor-made by the Holy Spirit according to your individual need, and according to the place He is preparing you for in the Body of Christ.”· I feel like the gift of tongues is like a box full of wonderful treasures for my own life and for others, and I want to do so more and more with the expectation of wondering what great thing the Holy Spirit wants to do in me, my circumstances, the lives of those I know, and even believers, unbelievers, leaders, and nations around the world that I don't even know! How can I receive my prayer language in tongues or become more fluent in using it?This is Bob Heil's testimony of his struggle to learn to use his prayer language from his book Lessons From the Furnace (p. 39-42). As a Lutheran pastor, Bob had been prayed for by a group of pastors to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and He had felt a strong feeling of faith and even a physical “electricity” sensation at that time from God as a confirmation that he had received it. But he had not started speaking in tongues. That night I was sound asleep at about two o'clock in the morning when the Lord came into the room. Again there was the sensation of electricity going through me – wave after wave of it. I awoke and could hardly breathe. I knew the Lord was standing there. I could not hear Him; I could not see Him or touch Him, but I knew He was there and that He wanted me to pray. I went into the living room in the dark and began to pray. I tried desperately to pray in tongues. There had been an earlier day when I had despised tongues, when I had said, “God, give me the Holy Spirit, but not tongues.” I had thought it was the kookiest thing I had ever heard of. But sudden conviction had come from God, and He had spoken to me.“Who are you to despise My gift?”I said, “Oh, Lord, I am sorry, but it is the least of all Your gifts.”The Lord replied, “Who told you it is the least of My gifts? The Scriptures do not say that. Besides, who are you that you think you deserve more than the least of My gifts?” I repented that instant. Now I was asking God to give me the gift of tongues. I did not want to miss any blessing from God. I knelt there in the dark crying out to God for the gift. I pointed to my mouth, saying, “Ah, ah.” But nothing came. Finally I said, “All right, God, then help me to pray in English. Guide my thoughts and help me to pour out my heart to You, for I must pray.” Suddenly my mind welled forth with thoughts and I poured them out to God.For almost two hours I was there on my knees in the living room. The prayer was in English, but now the Lord guided the thoughts! It was never repetitious, never hum-drum. What a blessing! It was rich and alive – the most powerful prayer session I had ever had.I could have prayed in tongues then, or in any of the weeks and months that followed, but I did not know how. Finally after four months of desperation I cried, “God, I give up. I just give up; I can't wait any longer. I will just make sounds to You. I will dedicate the sounds and you will have to put them together. I don't know how, but I have got to do something.” I began to make sounds and spoke what was about two sentences worth of sounds and stopped. I said, “No, that was only me,” and I did not do it again for several weeks.Again I became so hungry for the blessing. I yearned to pray in tongues, because I wanted every bit of edification I could get my hands on. So once again I decided to pray sounds to God. I began making these utterances and this time I went on for what was perhaps a few paragraphs. Then I stopped. I thought to myself, “Was that me or not?” It was enough to turn me off so that for several weeks I said nothing else in tongues. Finally I was at a regional convention of the Full Gospel Business Men. There was a great sermon that morning and I became so thrilled and happy. During the prayer time afterwards I made up my mind to just keep making sounds until something happened. It took about five minutes, but gradually I began to feel my heart break through. I grew bolder and began to trust more and more new sounds. I stopped worrying whether it was me or not. I had dedicated the language to God. It began to flow more and more and my heart began to rise like a rocket off the launching pad. My praise ascended to God.Ever since that day it has been sweet and beautiful. By dedicating new sounds to my baby prayer language, it quickly blossomed forth full-grown. Then I realized it had been there all along – just waiting for me to use it. Just as I prayed in English, I was to do the praying in tongues. God had not put it in my mind or my throat. He had put it in my spirit. Not only that, but I could use it whenever I wanted. It was God's gift and God does not take back His gifts. He says “His gifts and callings are without repentance” (Rom. 11:29). If you have ever had it, you have still got it. Just open your heart and your mouth and pray to God in sounds. Leave the results and any correction up to Him.In teaching the Corinthian church about using tongues in the church meeting, Paul says a couple things that imply that the personal prayer language gift is available to all believers.1 Corinthians 14:5a - 5Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. 1 Corinthians 14:18 - I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. The Lord promises us that when we sincerely and earnestly ask Him for a deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit, He will not disappoint us.Jeremiah 29:13-14a - 13"You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. 14I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity."Luke 11:13 - "If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”Basically, to receive the gift of tongues we should sincerely ask for it. It's a good thing, and Jesus is encouraged us to believe confidently that our Father will give us the Holy Spirit and the good gifts that He may bring. As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 12:31: "But earnestly desire the higher gifts," and as we read earlier, 1 Corinthians 14:1 echoes: "earnestly desire the spiritual gifts."If you've never prayed in tongues, what should you expect? Does the Holy Spirit possess you and you start speaking uncontrollably? No, it's generally a cooperative effort. Acts says that "they spoke in tongues as the Spirit enabled them."What should we do? A good word is "yield." John Bevere uses the imagery of wading into a gentle river or creek. You can fight to stand up straight and not be moved by the current, or you can relax, yield to it, and let it carry you along. It seems that a key part of cooperation with the Holy Spirit is surrender or yielding. It is saying "yes" to Him.I have been a believer in Jesus since I was very young, but I was never taught about the baptism of the Holy Spirit until I was a 5th-grader at Family Bible Camp here at COC. I remember that Leslie Barker taught us in the morning kids' lesson in the old fellowship building, and then the kids from here (perhaps Cathy included) gathered around my brother Tim and me and laid hands on us and prayed for us. They said that we should expect to pray in tongues, but I wasn't sure what it would be like or how to do it. I did believe it and expected to receive the gift, though. So during my growing up, I knew I had been baptized with the Spirit, and I prayed in tongues a little, but sometimes had doubts about whether I was really praying in the Spirit or if it was just me. Then, during the summer after I had just graduated from college, I was at summer camp here and Bob Heil had returned to preach at it. That night here in the chapel, he taught about the baptism of the Holy Spirit, sharing his own testimony and struggle about receiving the gift of tongues, and inviting anyone who hadn't ever prayed in tongues or had doubts about it to stay afterward, and he would get us praying in tongues. So a friend and I stayed in the chapel with Bob and others, and I remember kneeling in the back row as he told us to just start believing and yield our mouths to speak. I started speaking in tongues with great confidence, and at the same time I was overtaken by hilarious belly laughter, and so was my friend. I knew that this was a manifestation of the Holy Spirit, not just me being silly. I was full of joy and realized that the Holy Spirit was reaffirming in me a confidence that, yes, He indeed had given me this gift and I should never again doubt it, but use it confidently. Praise the Lord!John 16:7 - 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. Ephesians 6:18 – And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people. I sincerely believe that the devil greatly fears a Church who makes good use of the gift of tongues, so it's no wonder that he works in many ways to keep us from believing in it, or receiving it, or making use of it. Let's eagerly desire and pursue this gift in our lives and expectantly see what the Holy Spirit will do with it in our lives, our families, our church, and in the world around us!

Jesus, I trust in You.

Often, rural churches suffer a lack of servants just due to numbers and needs. I have seen people leave a church because of the fear of having to serve. If our interview with Mike Rutherford helped us understand one thing very clearly, it's not to ever underestimate Louisville. That word of advice also applies to Rutherford as he proved he's still got 'it' as you'll find out in the podcast. We're not giving that part away so you'll have to listen. You'll find out about a resurging Cardinals men's basketball team under the guidance of Chris Mack. Then, the impact Scott Satterfield will have on the football program. Break out your dictionaries as Will Ojanen, Xayveon and Jim Quist talk with special guest Mike Rutherford (SB Nation, Card Chronicle, 790 KRD) on episode #153 of ACC Nation Podcast. The nice thing about today's media is that you're not limited in your selection. There's more sources for sports fans than ever. If you're a fan of Louisville you can certainly keep in touch with what's happening via Card Chronicle. And, if you don't live in the metro Louisville area you can still listen to Mike Rutherford (Ramsey and Rutherford) weekday afternoons beginning at 3:00pm ET via the streaming link at 790 KRD. Your familiarity with Rutherford should extend into social media as well. We thought you might be interested in taking a closer look at what's going on at Louisville as we hit mid February. The thought is that the Cardinals will be headed to the NCAA's this year. However, there's still plenty of question marks hovering around the program. And, football is easing back into the conversation as well. With a new coach at the helm you'll get Rutherford's take on the program. Prayer LiturgyBible ReadingWhat is prayer for?to “get God to do something”?Does God answer our prayers? YES YES YES!the Bible is clear - when we pray something happensGod calls us to pray as part of our cooperation with HimDoes God do a lot more than answer our prayers?? YES YES YES.If God just gave us whatever we asked for we would not be better off!God hears our requests and answers in the most loving wayto form us.Prayer is never about changing God - Prayer is about being changedGod already knows what you are going to pray for - He knows better than you do what you need!Matt 6:7God is always present and at work!God cares about this more than you do!Prayer is never about convincing God - it is about moving into alignment with His will and His power - About learning to fully surrender to Him and fully RELY upon Him.Prayer changes us - prayer FORMS us.Prayer shuts down unhealthy thought patterns and opens up healthy ones.Prayer quiets anxiety, prayer fosters hope, prayer reminds us of the truth, prayer reveals the lies, prayer opens us to hear the voice of God.Pray reminds and enables us to forgive and to show grace.Who Taught you to pray? - If prayer is so important who taught you to do it?Most of us just stumble along and figure things out. We might have a little instruction but most of us were never taught HOW to prayThis is why prayer is so hard for so many people - if they have to make it all up themselves it is difficult! They pray for a few minutes and run out of things to say. When we feel like we are constantly failing it will never become a pattern in our livesHow does one teach others to pray?Luke 11:1It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, "Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.” 2And He said to them, "When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. 3Give us each day our daily bread. 4And forgive us our sins, For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.'"Why should I pray other people’s prayers?to have something to say when you don’t know what to say - why isn’t tongues enough?2 Cor 14:13Therefore, the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret. 14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.15What then shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind. I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.If prayer forms us and we are making up our own prayers then our formation is bound to be limitedmaking up your own prayers is still going to be good for you because God is in the midstbut it won’t change you as deeply because its just MORE of you.Angry people pray angry prayers, violent people pray violent prayers, greedy people etc...So What prayers should we prayYou need to pray the word of God!Jesus gave us a prayer to pray - we should be praying it!The book of Psalms has been the prayer book of God’s people for over 3000 yearsYou need a Wise liturgy given to you by the great tradition of 2000 years of lovers of Jesus.Prayers that have stood the test of timePrayers that have been helpful for generation of Jesus followersYou need a liturgy that is going to take you into encounter with Jesus but then also outward into encounter with the worldYou need a liturgy that you can come back to over and over again.that stays the samethe lattice, the skeletonthat makes room for change and variety
