S3E17 - For the Glory KC is back with the 82nd episode of the show! Sporting Kansas City are officially 10 games into their 2024 season and it's a benchmark that Peter Vermes likes to focus on. The team is 2-3-5 (11 points) and sitting in 10th place. It's better than last season, but that's an incredibly low bar to clear. We asked Peter Vermes how he felt about where the team was, and his answers left something to be desired. My colleague Jimmy Mack Tweeted out the quotes. Sheena and I weigh in the quotes, the play against Minnesota United FC in the 2-1 loss and the rumor from Taylor Twellman that signings are coming in the summer and where we'd like to see those signings. Oh, and we have to talk about this meme-worthy image and subsequent work from Offside Modeling that confirmed it was onside. The Kansas City Current thankfully brought us happier things to talk about in their 3-1 come-from-behind win over Angel City FC in Los Angeles on Friday night. Plus, we went to Game One of the KC Comets attempt to win the Ron Newman Cup in the MASL Final on Sunday afternoon. Game two is Tuesday. In the Digital Crawl, we hit a few topics, including: The new KC Current development around the stadium Dom Dwyer signing with the Oakland Roots The Major of Indianapolis Talking MLS Expansion Former KC player signings in MLS and the USL Super League Here is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times): Our Experience with the MASL Finals and the KC Comets - 2:03 Sporting KC lose to MIN - 8:28 Taylor Twellman says SKC signings are coming - 46:22 The KC Current make a Big Comeback - 53:03 It's not all good news around the Current - 1:07:57 Errors and Corrections are back - 1:12:20 Digital Crawl - 1:17:19 Upcoming Schedule: KC Comets at Chihuahua Savage - Tuesday, April 30 @ 9:05 PM CT Sporting KC at Real Salt Lake - Saturday, May 4th @ 8:30 PM KC Current at Houston Dash - Sunday, May 5th @ 12:00 PM Sporting KC II host North Texas SC - Sunday, May 5th @ 6:00 PM Spotify took away our ads, so we turned on "Listener Support." Real Talk on Health Challenges: Speaking FOR Your Parts vs. Speaking FROM Your Parts Jen and I talk about the difference between complaining, speaking honestly about what's going on, and the other person's capacity to sit with things that they may feel they need to fix or change. Many of you have been told that you complain too much or that you're too negative. Neurodivergent brains tend to report the truth, and we are very discerning about what we like and what we don't like. This can be perceived as negativity, complaining or being depressing to be around. What if it really wasn't about you? CO-HOST Jen Perry, MSEd, MA, LPC HIGHLIGHTS Summary In this conversation, Patricia and Jen discuss the difference between complaining and sharing honestly about personal struggles. They explore the challenges of navigating conversations around difficult topics and the importance of holding space for each other's experiences. They also delve into the healing process and the acceptance of trauma, emphasizing the need to honor and validate our own emotions. The conversation highlights the significance of checking intentions and capacity in communication, as well as the transformative power of being in relationship with our experiences. In this conversation, Jen and Patricia discuss the importance of speaking from a part versus speaking for a part. They explore the concept of unprocessed trauma and how it can affect communication. They also discuss the significance of acknowledging and balancing pain, as well as differentiating between acting from a part and speaking for a part. The conversation highlights the role of chaperoning the part and the importance of validating and witnessing pain. Finally, they find humor in the uncertainty of their podcast episodes. Takeaways Differentiate between complaining and sharing honestly about personal struggles. Hold space for each other's experiences and validate emotions. Accept and heal from trauma by being in relationship with our experiences. Check intentions and capacity in communication to ensure effective and compassionate conversations. It is important to speak from a part rather than speaking for a part. Unprocessed trauma can impact communication and lead to a desire for others to intuitively understand and fix our needs. Acknowledging and balancing pain can help in managing distressing emotions. Differentiating between acting from a part and speaking for a part can provide clarity in communication. Chaperoning the part involves bringing in other perspectives and validating the pain experienced. Validating and witnessing pain is crucial in processing unprocessed trauma. Finding humor in uncertainty can help alleviate pressure and create a lighter atmosphere. In this episode, join us as Sully Sullivan takes the spotlight and talks about the significance of learning and embracing the idea that sometimes we need to take a step back in order to speed things up. It entails reducing patient load and earnings temporarily, while prioritizing team training and streamlining processes, resulting in a more efficient team post-transition. How Can We Deep (the Memory) of Our Experiences?
"The first person that we have a hard time looking at is the soul of the person in the mirror. That's why the healing starts within." —Liza Boubari It is said that the only thing holding us back from greatness is our mindset. Having a negative mindset can be all consuming and can impact our physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. Therefore, healing should start from our inner being. It is not just about fixing the physical body, it's about confronting the roots of an issue and allowing the mind, body, and soul to unify and work together in synergy. By exploring our inner-self, we can gain a new level of insight, find harmony amongst life's chaos, and unlock our full potential! In this episode, Daniel and Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist Liza Boubari share how changing our inner dialogue can help reset our mind and transform our story into a more upbeat and encouraging narrative. They also talk about how we can get the most of our experiences, stand up for who we are, overcome anxiety, and say "Yes!" to ourselves. I'm Stephanie Minn and today. I'm joined by a very special guest, fellow thoughtboter Mina Slater. Mina, would you like to introduce yourself to our audience? MINA: Yeah. Hi, everyone. I am Mina. I am a Senior Developer on Mission Control, which is thoughtbot's DevOps and SRE team. STEPHANIE: So, Mina, what's new in your world? MINA: Well, I start marathon training this week. So I hope that this conversation goes well and lasts you for three months because you're probably not going to see or hear from me all summer. STEPHANIE: Yes. That sounds...it sounds hard, to be honest, marathon training in the summer. When I was doing a bit more running, I always thought I would wake up earlier than I did and, you know, beat the heat, and then I never would, and that really, like, was kind of rough. MINA: Yeah, actually, I was thinking about my plans for today. I didn't wake up early enough to run in the morning. And so I was calculating, like, okay, by midday, it's going to be too hot. So I'm going to have to wait until, like, 6:00 p.m. [laughs] STEPHANIE: Yeah, yeah. Or, if you're like me, there's a very real chance that you just skip it altogether. [laughter] MINA: Well, I have a deadline, so... [laughs] STEPHANIE: That's true. When is your marathon race? MINA: This is actually the first year I'm doing two in a calendar year. So I'm doing Berlin in September. And then, three weeks after that, I'm going to run one in Detroit. STEPHANIE: Nice. At least you'll be ready. You'll, like, have done it. I don't know; it kind of sounds maybe a bit more efficient that way. [laughs] MINA: Theoretically. But, you know, ask me in October. I'll let you know how it goes. STEPHANIE: That's true. You might have to come back on as a guest. [laughs] MINA: Just to talk about how it went. [laughs] STEPHANIE: Yeah, exactly. MINA: So that's what's new with me. What's new in your world, Steph? STEPHANIE: So, a while back on a previous Bike Shed episode, I talked about joining this client team and, in their daily team syncs, in addition to just sharing what we were up to and what we were working on, we would also answer the question what's something new to us. And that was a space for people to share things that they learned or even just, like, new things that they tried, like food, or activities, or whatnot. And I really enjoyed it as a way to get to know the team, especially when I was new to that client project. And recently, someone on the team ended up creating a random question generator. So now the question for the daily sync rotates. And I've been having a lot of fun with that. Some of the ones that I like are, what made you laugh recently? What's currently playing on your Spotify or YouTube? No cheating. MINA: [laughs] STEPHANIE: And then, yesterday, we had what's for dinner? As the question. And I really liked that one because it actually prompted me to [chuckles] think about what I was going to do for dinner as opposed to waiting till 5:00 p.m. and then stressing because I'm already hungry but don't have a plan [chuckles] for how I'm going to feed myself yet. So it ended up being nice because I, you know, kind of was inspired by what other people mentioned about their dinner plans and got my stuff together. MINA: That's shocking to me because we had just come off of two weeks of traveling together. And the one thing I learned about you is that you plan two meals ahead, but maybe that is travel stuff. STEPHANIE: I think that is extremely correct. Because when you're traveling, you're really excited about all the different things that you want to eat wherever you are. And so, yeah, we were definitely...at least I was planning for us, like, two or three meals [laughs] in advance. MINA: [laughs] STEPHANIE: But, when I'm at home, it is much harder to, I don't know, like, be motivated. And it just becomes, like, a daily chore. [laughs] So it's not as exciting. MINA: I think I'm the same way. I just had a whole bunch of family in town. And I was definitely planning dinner before we had breakfast because I'm like, oh, now I have to be responsible for all of these people. STEPHANIE: Yeah. I just mentioned the questions because I've been really having fun with them, and I feel a lot more connected to the team. Like, I just get to know them more as people and the things they're interested in, and what they do in their free time. So, yeah, highly recommend adding a fun question to your daily syncs. MINA: Yeah, we started doing that on Mission Control at our team sync meetings recently, too, where the first person...we actually have an order generator that somebody on the team wrote where it takes everyone's first and last name and scramble them and then randomizes the order. So you kind of have to figure out where in the queue you are and who's coming up next after you. But the first person that goes in the queue every day has to think of an icebreaker question. STEPHANIE: That's kind of a lot of pressure [laughs] for a daily meeting, especially if you're having to unscramble names and then also come up with the icebreaker question. I personally would be very stressed [laughs] by that. But I also can see that it's...I also think it's very fun, especially for a small team like yours. MINA: Yeah, yeah, just seven of us; we get to know really well what letters are in everyone's names. But I was first today, and I didn't have an icebreaker question ready. So I ended up just passing. So that's also an option. STEPHANIE: That's fair. Maybe I'll link you to our random question generator, so you can find some inspiration. [laughs] MINA: Yeah, it's a ChatGPT situation. STEPHANIE: So you mentioned that you and I had just been traveling together for two weeks. And that's because Mina and I were at RubyKaigi in Matsumoto, Japan, earlier this May. And that's the topic of today's episode: Our Experience at RubyKaigi. And the really cool thing that I wanted to mention was that this was all possible because Mina and I were sponsored by WNB.rb, which is a global community of women and non-binary people working in Ruby. And I've mentioned this group on the show before, but I wanted to plug it again because I think that this was something really special that we got to do. WNB runs a lot of initiatives, like, meetups and panels supporting people to speak at conferences and book clubs. And, you know, just many different programming events for supporting women and non-binary Rubyists in their career growth. And they are recently beginning a new initiative to sponsor folks to attend conferences. And Mina, you and I were the first people to get to try this out and go to an international conference. So that was really awesome. It was something that I don't think I would have done without the support from WNB. MINA: And you almost didn't do. I think there was a lot of convincing [chuckles] that went on at the beginning to kind of get you to, like, actually consider coming with me. STEPHANIE: It's true. It's true. I think you had DMed me, and you were, like, so, like, RubyKaigi, like, eyeball emoji. [laughs] I was, I think, hesitant because this was my first international conference. And so there was just a lot of, like, unknowns and uncertainty for me. And I think that's going to be part of what we talk about today. But is there anything that you want to say about WNB and how you felt about being offered this opportunity? MINA: Yeah. When Emily and Jemma, the founders of WNB, approached us with this opportunity and this offer, I think I was...taken aback is not really quite the right words but, like, surprised and honored, really, I think it's a better word. Like, I was very honored that they thought of us and kind of took the initiative to come to us with this offer. So I'm really grateful for this opportunity because going to RubyKaigi, I think it's always something that was on my radar. But I never thought that...well, not never. I thought that I had to go as a speaker, which would have been, like, a three to five-year goal. [laughs] But to be able to go as an attendee with the support of the group and also of thoughtbot was really nice. STEPHANIE: Yeah, absolutely. That investment in our professional development was really meaningful to me. So, like you, I'm very grateful. And if any of our listeners are interested in donating to WNB.rb and contributing to the community's ability to send folks to conferences, you can do so at wnb-rb.dev/donate. Or, if you work for a company that might be interested in sponsoring, you can reach out to them at organizers@wnb-rb.dev. MINA: I highly recommend doing that. STEPHANIE: So, one of the questions I wanted to ask you about in terms of your RubyKaigi experience was, like, how it lined up with your expectations and if it was different or similar to what you were expecting. MINA: Yeah, I have always heard that when people talk about RubyKaigi as a conference and about its contents, the word that everyone uses to describe it is technical. I have already had sort of a little bit of that expectation going in. But I think my interpretation of the word technical didn't really line up with how actually technical it was. And so that was one thing that was different than what I had expected. STEPHANIE: Could you elaborate on what was surprising about the way that it was technical? MINA: Yeah. I think that when I hear technical talks and having been to some Ruby and Rails confs here in the States, when I hear about technical talks, it's a lot more content about people using the technology, how they use Ruby to do certain things, or how they use Rails to achieve certain goals in their day-to-day work or side projects. But it seems at RubyKaigi; it is a lot more about the language itself, how Ruby does certain things, or how interpreters implement Ruby, the language itself. So I think it's much more lower-level than what I was expecting. STEPHANIE: Yeah, I agree. I think you and I have gone to many of Ruby Central conferences in the U.S., like RubyConf and RailsConf. So that was kind of my comparison as well is that was, you know, the experience that I was more familiar with. And then, going into this conference, I was very surprised that the themes of the talks were, like you said, very focused on the language itself, especially performance, tooling, the history and future of Ruby, which I thought was pretty neat. Ruby turns 30, I think, this year. And one thing that I noticed a lot was folks talking about using Ruby to reflect on itself and the possibilities of utilizing those capabilities to improve our experience as developers using the language. MINA: Yeah. I think one of the things I was really fascinated by is...you had mentioned the performance. There were several talks about collecting how Ruby performs at certain levels. And I thought that that was quite interesting and things I had never thought about before, and I'm hoping to think about in the future. [laughs] STEPHANIE: Yeah. One talk that I went to was Understanding the Ruby Global VM Lock by Ivo Anjo. And that was something that, you know, I had an awareness of that Ruby has this GVL and certain...I had, like, a very hand-wavy understanding about how, like, concurrency worked with Ruby because it hasn't been something that I've really needed to know too deeply in my day-to-day work. Like, I feel a little bit grateful not to have run into an issue where I had to, you know, dive deep into it because it was causing problems. [laughs] But attending that talk was really cool because I liked that the speaker did give, like, an overview for folks who might be less familiar but then was able to get really deep in terms of, like, what he was doing workwise with improving his performance by being able to observe how the lock was being used in different threads and, like, where it might be able to be improved. And he shared some of his open-source projects that I'll link in the show notes. But, yeah, that was just something that I was vaguely aware of and haven't yet, like, needed to know a lot about, but, you know, got to understand more by going to this conference. And I don't think I would have gotten that content otherwise. MINA: Yeah, I agree. The talk that you are referencing is one of my favorite as well. I think, like you, kind of this vague idea of there's things going on under the hood in Ruby is always there, but to get a peek behind the curtain a little bit was very enlightening. I wrote down one of the things that he said about how highly optimized Ruby code can still be impacted and be slow if you don't optimize GVL. And he also shared, I think, some strategies for profiling that layer in your product, if that is something you need, which I thought was really cool. STEPHANIE: Yeah. I think I had mentioned performance was a really big theme. But I didn't realize how many levers there were to pull in terms of the way Ruby is implemented or the way that we are able to use Ruby that can improve performance. And it's really cool to see so many people being experts at all of those different components or aspects of making Ruby fast. [laughs] MINA: Yeah. I think that part of the work that we do on Mission Control is monitoring performance and latency for our clients. And while I don't expect having to utilize some of the tools that I learned at RubyKaigi, I expect being aware of these things helping, I think, in the long run. STEPHANIE: Yeah, absolutely. Joël and I have talked on the show about this idea of, like, push versus pull learning. So push, being you consume content that may not be relevant to you right now but maybe will be in the future. And you can remember, like, oh, I watched a talk on this, or I read something about this, and then you can go refer back to it. As opposed to pull being, like, I have this thing that I don't understand, but I need to know right now, so I'm going to seek out resources about it. And I think we kind of landed on that both are important. But at Kaigi, especially, this was very much more push for me where there's a lot of things that I now have an awareness of. But it's a little different, I think, from my experience at Ruby Central conferences where I will look at the schedule, and I will see talks that I'm like, oh, like, that sounds like it will be really relevant to something I'm working through on my client project or, like, some kind of challenging consulting situation. And so the other thing that I noticed that was different was that a lot of the U.S. conferences are more, I think like business and team challenges-focused. So the talks kind of incorporate both a technical and socio-cultural aspect of the problems that they were solving. And I usually really like that because I find them very relatable to my day-to-day work. And that was something that was less common at Kaigi. MINA: Also, that I've never been to a conference that is more on the academic side of things. So I don't know if maybe that is more aligned with what Kaigi feels like. STEPHANIE: Yeah, that's true. I think there were a lot of talks from Ruby Committers who were just sharing, like, what they've been working on, like, what they've been thinking about in terms of future features for Ruby. And it was very much at the end of those talks, like, I'm open to feedback. Like, look out for this coming soon, or, like, help contribute to this effort. And so it was interesting because it was less, like, here are some lessons learned or, like, here are some takeaways, or, like, here's how we did this. And more like, hey, I'm, you know, in the middle of figuring this out, and I'm sharing with you where I'm at right now. But I guess that's kind of the beauty of the open-source community is that you can put out a call for help and contributions. MINA: Yeah, I think they call that peer review in the academic circles. STEPHANIE: [laughs] That's fair. MINA: [laughs] STEPHANIE: Was there anything else that you really enjoyed about the conference? MINA: I think that one of my favorite parts, and we've talked about this a little bit before, is after hours on the second day, we were able to connect with Emori House and have dinner with their members. Emori House is a group that supports female Kaigi attendees specifically. I think it's that they, as a group, rent out an establishment or a house or something, and they all stay together kind of to look out for each other as they attend this very, I think, male-dominated conference. STEPHANIE: Yeah. I loved that dinner with folks from Emori House too. I think the really cool thing to me is that it's just community and action, you know, like, someone wanted to go to this conference and make it easier for other women to go to this conference and decided to get lodging together and do that work of community building. And that social aspect of conferences we hadn't really talked about yet, but it's something that I really enjoy. And it's, like, one of the main reasons that I go to conferences besides learning. MINA: Yeah, I agree. At the Ruby Central conferences, one of my favorite parts is always the hallway track, where you randomly meet other attendees or connect with attendees that you already knew. And like I mentioned, this dinner with Emori House happened on the second night. And I think by midday second day; I was missing that a little bit. The setup for RubyKaigi, I noticed, does not make meeting people and organizing social events as easy as I had been used to, and part of that, I'm sure, is the language barrier. But some places where I had met a lot of the people that I call conference friends for Ruby Central conferences had been at the lunch table. And Kaigi sets up in a way where they send you out with food vouchers for local restaurants, which I thought was really cool. But it doesn't make meeting people and organizing groups to go out together with people you don't already know a little more difficult. So meeting Emori House on the second night was kind of exactly what I had been missing at the moment. STEPHANIE: Yeah, agreed. I also really thrive off of more smaller group interactions like organically, you know, bumping into people on the hallway track, ideally. I also noticed that, at Kaigi, a lot of the sponsors end up hosting parties and meetups after the conference in the evenings. And so that was a very interesting social difference, I think, where the sponsors had a lot more engagement in that sense. You and I didn't end up going to any of those drink-ups, are what they're called. But I think, similarly, if I were alone, I would be a little intimidated to go by myself. And it's kind of one of those things where it's like, oh, if I know someone, then we can go together. But, yeah, I certainly was also missing a bit of a more organic interaction with others. Though, I did meet a few Rubyists from just other places in East Asia, like Taiwan and China. And it was really cool to be in a place where people are thinking about Ruby differently than in the U.S. I noticed in Japan; there's a lot more energy and enthusiasm about it. And, yeah, just folks who are really passionate about making Ruby a long-lasting language, something that, you know, people will continue to want to work with. And I thought that was very uplifting because it's kind of different from what the current industry in the U.S. is looking like in terms of programming languages for the jobs available. MINA: It's really energizing, I think, to hear people be so enthusiastic about Ruby, especially, like you said, when people ask me what I do here, I say, "Developer," and they say, "Oh, what language do you work in?" I always have to be kind of like, "Have you heard of Ruby?" [laughs] And I think it helps that Ruby originated in Japan. They probably feel a little bit, like, not necessarily protective of it, but, like, this is our own, and we have to embrace it and make sure that it is future-facing, and going places, and it doesn't get stale. STEPHANIE: Right. And I think that's really cool, especially to, you know, be around and, like, have conversations about, like you said, it's very energizing. MINA: Yeah, like you mentioned, we did meet several other Rubyists from, like, East Asian countries, which doesn't necessarily always happen when you attend U.S.-based or even European-based conferences. I think that it is just not as...they have to travel from way farther away. So I think it's really cool to hear about RubyConf Taiwan coming up from one of the Rubyists from Taiwan, which is awesome. And it makes me kind of want to go. [laughs] STEPHANIE: Yeah, I didn't know that that existed either. And just realizing that there are Rubyists all over the world who want to share the love of the language is really cool. And I am definitely going to keep a lookout for other opportunities. Now that I've checked off my first international conference, you know, I have a lot more confidence about [laughs] doing it again in the future, which actually kind of leads me to my next question is, do you have any advice for someone who wants to go to Kaigi or wants to go to an international conference? MINA: Yeah, I think I have both. For international conferences in general, I thought that getting a buddy to go with you is really nice. Steph and I were able to...like, you and I were able to kind of support each other in different ways because I think we're both stressed [laughs] about international travel in different ways. So where you are stressed, I'm able to support, and where I'm stressed, you're able to support. So it was really nice and well-rounded experience because of that. And for RubyKaigi specifically, I would recommend checking out some of the previous year's talks before you actually get there and take a look at the schedule when it comes out. Because, like we said, the idea of, I think, technical when people use that word to describe the content at RubyKaigi is different than what most people would expect. And kind of having an idea of what you're getting into by looking at previous videos, I think, will be really helpful and get you in the right mindset to absorb some of the information and knowledge. STEPHANIE: Yeah, absolutely. I was just thinking about...I saw in Ruby Weekly this week Justin Searls had posted a very thorough live blogging of his experience at Kaigi that was much more in the weeds of, like, all of the content of the talks. And also had tips for how to brew coffee at a convenience store in Japan too. So I recommend checking that out if folks are curious about...especially this year before the videos of the talks are out. I think one thing that I would do differently next time if I were to attend Kaigi or attend a conference that supports multiple languages...so there were talks in Japanese and English, and the ones in Japanese were live interpreted. And you and I had attended, like, one or two, but it ended up being a little tough to follow because the slides were a little bit out of sync with the interpretation. I definitely would want to try again and invest a little more into attending talks in Japanese because I do think the content is still even different from what we might be seeing in English. And now that I know that it takes a lot of mental energy, just kind of perhaps loading up on those talks in the morning while I'm still, you know -- MINA: [laughs] STEPHANIE: Fresh-faced and coffee-driven. [laughs] Rather than saving it for the afternoon when it might be a little harder to really focus. MINA: I think my mental energy has a very specific sweet spot because definitely, like, late in the afternoon would not be good for that. But also, like, very early in the morning would also not be very good for that because my coffee hasn't kicked in yet. STEPHANIE: That's very real as well. MINA: Do you think that there is anything that the conference could have done to have made your experience a little tiny bit better? Is there any support that you could have gotten from someone else, be it the conference, or WNB, or thoughtbot, or other people that you had gone with that could have enhanced this experience? STEPHANIE: Hmm, that's an interesting question. I'm not really sure because I was experiencing so many new things -- MINA: [laughs] STEPHANIE: That that was kind of, like, what was top of mind for me was just getting around even just, like, looking at all the little sponsor booths because that was, like, novel for me to see, like, different companies that I've never heard of before that I think when I asked you about expectations earlier, like, I actually came in with not a lot of expectations because I really was just open to whatever it was going to be. And now that I've experienced it once, I think that I have a little more of an idea of what works for me, what I like, what I don't like. And so I think it really comes down to it being quite a personal experience and how you like to attend conferences and so -- MINA: For sure. STEPHANIE: At the end of the day, yeah, like, definitely recommend just going if that opportunity is available to you and determining for yourself how you want that experience to be. MINA: Certainly. I think just by being there you learn a lot about what you like in conferences and how we like to attend conferences. On a personal level, I'm also an organizer with Ruby Central with their scholarship committee. And that's somewhere where we take new Rubyists or first-time conference attendees and kind of lower the barrier for them to attend these conferences. And the important part I wanted to get to is setting them up with a mentor, somebody who has attended one of these conferences before that can kind of help them set goals and navigate. And I thought that someone like that would...at RubyKaigi, being both our first times, might be useful. STEPHANIE: Yeah, absolutely. I think that's totally fair. One thing I do really like about the Ruby Central conferences is the social support. And I think you had mentioned that maybe that was the piece that was a little bit missing for you at this conference. MINA: Yeah. I know that someone had asked early on, I think, like, the night before the conference officially kicked off, whether there is a Slack or Discord space for all conference attendees so that people can organize outings or meals. And that is definitely something that at least the Ruby Central conferences have, and I imagine other conferences do too, that was missing at Kaigi as well. STEPHANIE: I'm wondering if you would go to Kaigi again and maybe be that mentor for someone else. MINA: I think so. I think I had different feelings about it when we were just leaving the conference, kind of feeling like some of these things that I'm learning here or that I'm being made aware of rather at RubyKaigi will come up important in the future, but maybe not right away. So then I was kind of walking away with a sense of, like, oh, maybe this is a conference that is important, but I might deprioritize if other opportunities come up. But then I started to kind of, like, jot down some reflections and retroing with myself on this experience. And I thought what you mentioned about this being the sort of, like, the push learning opportunity is really nice because I went in there not knowing what I don't know. And I think I came out of it at least being a little bit aware of lots of things that I don't know. STEPHANIE: Yeah, yeah. Maybe, like, what I've come away with this conversation is that there is value in conferences being different from each other, like having more options. And, you know, one conference can't really be everything for everyone. And so, for you and I to have had such a very different experience at this particular conference than we normally do, that has value. It also can be something that you end up deciding, like, you're not into, and then you know. So, yeah, I guess that is kind of what I wanted to say about this very new experience. MINA: Yeah, having new experiences, I think, is the important part. It's the same idea as you want to get a diverse group of people in the room together, and you come out with better ideas or better products or whatever because you have other points of view. And I think that attending conferences, even if not around the world, that are different from each other either in academia or just kind of, like, branching out of Ruby Central conferences, too, is a really valuable experience. Maybe conferences in other languages or language-agnostic conferences. STEPHANIE: Yeah, well said. On that note, shall we wrap up? MINA: Let's do it. Introduction James 5-1 Peter 1 Well today is three things. It's 1. Easter Sunday, it's 2. the last message in the book of James and it's 3. my last message as preaching pastor here at FCBC. This is a hard message for me to preach. Because on the one hand I have deep, deep, deep sorrow that this is my last Sunday with you all in this way. I mean my heart is bleeding on the inside. I was talking to my dad this week about what I was experiencing. I was like, “Dad, I don't know what's wrong with me.” And he said, “I know what's wrong with you; you're grieving.” He's not wrong. I am. There's tremendous loss in my soul. 17 years of my life is invested here. So many relationships, so many fun times together in God's Word, so many great times of worship, so much truth discovered. And so I'm bleeding out on the inside. This is not exactly what I would call a "formula for joy." Half of me is like, “Are you kidding? You're in no condition to preach this Sunday!” But then over here, there's this incredible love for resurrection Sunday which has always been the high point of the Christian calendar and it's always been my favorite Sunday of the year. I just absolutely love Resurrection Sunday. Because the resurrection is the central point in Christian theology, It's the evidence that we are freed from the power of sin, It's the proof that the penalty of sin has been erased, It's the great hope that every Christian has as he approaches death and the grave. The resurrection IS THE defining cornerstone event in all Christian history and the hope of the world. So all that over here says: It's time to celebrate. And so all week long, I've been witness to a war. These are two very strong armies. What's a man to do about this? I suppose nothing because this has a way of making everything that is said this morning a bit more real. This internal battle of mine is really just a metaphor for the internal battle that all of us experience by virtue of the fact that this world is broken. What do we do about it? Can we celebrate in sorrow? Can we celebrate in the midst of a broken world? If your best friend has been taken from you by death, can your rejoice? If you are suffering deeply as a result of someone cheating you, taking advantage of your kindness, or sinning against you can you rejoice? If you are in misery because of an illness that won't leave you alone, can you be grateful? If the brokenness you experience is literally unfixable and there is no hope that you will ever experience freedom in this life, can you still sing praise? Suffering presents us with a decision. Suffering is a fork in the road. This path goes East and this path goes West. The two forks lead in opposite directions and I must choose. Warning: life is too short to make a mistake. Here's the fork: does my suffering interpret the goodness of God or does goodness of God interpret my suffering? Is my suffering evidence that God is not in control, is not good, and that he does not love me. Or is the fact that God is in control, God is good and God loves me the very TRUTH needed to properly interpret my suffering. Here's what every preacher of the Gospel has been sent to proclaim: OUR EXPERIENCE, as hard as it may be, does not change the GOSPEL TRUTH. It's the other way around. This GOSPEL TRUTH, changes our EXPERIENCE of suffering. Can we sing praise in suffering? You want to know what the answer is? You bet we can. Can we rejoice in our affliction? Absolutely we can. Yes. Because there is a GOSPEL TRUTH that changes everything. Yes, life is difficult. Yes, we all suffer. But JESUS CHRIST HAS RISEN FROM THE DEAD. AND BECAUSE THAT IS TRUE, EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED. That objective truth exists beyond and above your experience, it exists outside your experience. It is real and solid and has shaping power. And because it's real, it can change you. Listen, this might sound obvious but just let it land: For something to change your life it has to be real. Review If you were with us last week, we were in the book of James chapter 5 and we reviewed this incredible scene from the top of Mt Carmel, this showdown between on the one side: 850 prophets of Baal and Ashera VS the other side: the one prophet of God Elijah. And the contest was established to determine which God was God of the storm. And here were the rules: Elijah said, “We each get a bull. We each get wood. We each get an altar. but neither of us gets fire.” The God who answers by fire, he is the true God. And we watched as the prophets of Baal danced and raved. We watched as they screamed and cried out. We watched as they demonstrated their sincerity by inflicting pain upon themselves and cutting themselves. On and on they went for 8 hours. And yet their god did not answer them. And we asked, why? Why was it that Baal did not answer? Was it for lack of effort? No, they exerted maximum effort. Hurculean effort. Was it for lack of personal sacrifice? No their personal sacrifice was extreme. They cut themselves and the text said that blood came gushing out of them. Was it for lack of belief? No, they fully believed. They were all in. They were completely invested. Was it for lack of devoted followers? No they had a tremendous following. 450 prophets and thousands of worshipers. But Baal was not answering. Why did their god not answer? Answer: Because their god wasn't real. And because he was not real he could not care. And because he was not real he had no control of anything. Truth is harsh. It just doesn't care about your sincerity. The truth doesn't care about your creative passion. The truth isn't even a thing that it could care. The truth just is. However much you deny the truth, the truth just goes on existing. And if you don't align your life with the truth the truth will break you. We speak of sinners breaking the law; but is not better to say that the law breaks the sinner? The law just is. God just is. Truth just is. So again, we do that review to make this obvious but needed point: For something to change your life it has to be real. If you hair is messy, you need a real comb to get the tangles out. If your car is low on oil, you need real oil to lubricate the engine. If your stomach is empty you need real food to fill your belly. And listen carefully. We have two very REAL problems. Sin has destroyed our soul. And death will destroy our life. And to fix those two very real problems we need a REAL Savior. Resurrection TRUTH Christianity is not an tradition, idea, a philosophy or a political agenda. Christianity has traditions. It contains ideas. Philosophies arise from it. Certain political ideas are favored because of it. But most certainly, none of these things get at what it is. Christianity is at it's very core a TRUTH-CLAIM. It's an appeal to REASON to align your life with TRUE events that happened in HISTORY. Christianity tries to get men and women to grapple with the implications of the historical claim that Jesus Christ really was God, really did die, and really did rise from the grave. And because that is REAL: it has tremendous power to save you if regarded, and tremendous power to destroy you if ignored. Christianity is a TRUTH-claim that hinges on ONE THING - the REALITY of the resurrection, if the resurrection is true, it's all true. If it's false, it's all false. There's nothing in between. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15, if Christ did not raise from the dead then we are still in our sins, everyone who died is still dead and we are of all men most to be pitied. Everything hinges on the resurrection. So this morning we are going to establish three implications of the resurrection and then we'll close by looking at the last 2 verses of the book of James. So let's start with the resurrection implications. If the resurrection is true, if the gospel accounts are HISTORY, here's what that means for us. If Jesus is alive that means that you can't go to his grave. You can't find his body. That means that his existence did not come to an end. It means right now, he's alive. I want you to get your mind around the significance of a claim like this and what it means for the Christian faith and what it means for. Let me give you an illustration. Let's say your spouse goes for a drive and then goes missing for some reason. And of course your worried sick and the days turn to weeks which turn to months which turns to years. And you've nearly given up but then, one day, a mysterious letter shows up. It appears it's written by your spouse. The very evidence of the letter gives this very strong evidence that they are alive. Your heart would leap: is it real? But then you look at it more closely and the doubts arise. You question the authenticity of the handwriting. You might question the sentence structure. I can't recall them forming sentences like that. Maybe even a detail or two seems like it might not be entirely true. And pretty soon you are seriously doubting it's authenticity But then you get a knock on the door and standing before you in flesh in blood is your spouse! Suddenly, all the questions vaporize. Let me ask, "Why do the questions disappear?" There was never resolution on the handwriting or grammar question. But you don't need it, because the REAL presence of the person resolves every other question. You know the questions are answerable because you have standing before you the one who contains all answers. They are the answer. When we talk about the place of the resurrection of Jesus Christ in the Christian faith we are talking about the same sort of argument-silencing absolute authority. If the resurrection is true, it's all true. What about the textual accuracy of the OT and the NT? What about polygamy or slavery in the OT? What about the age of the earth and how that goes together with science? What about bad things happening to good people? What about… There's a certain posture behind those questions: “If you can't answer me these question, then I can't believe in God.” Those are all really good questions. They are all fair questions. But if Jesus Christ rose from the dead, well, you have your answer. It's similar to turning off a basketball game at halftime when your favorite team is down by 30 at half. And you think it's over. And then later you look at the final score and see that they won. You think, there's no possible way. How did they do that? Because you didn't watch the game you don't know HOW but because you see the final score, you know THAT THEY DID. The resurrected Christ is like that final winning score. I've got a lot of questions, I don't know HOW this works, but if the resurrection is true, there IS an answer. He obviously has answers. He contains the answers. He is the answer. The only thing that matters at that point is submission. The only thing is to sit down, shut up and see what he has to say. Let his mouth speak and answer your questions. Answer Us With Fire The resurrection is God's answer. The people of Israel asked the question, “How do we know which God is true? Is it YHWH or Baal?” So they setup a contest. YHWH of the OT answered Elijah with fire. We have a NT equivalent of this: On the cross we have a showdown between all the forces of evil of the universe, all the darkness of sin, the horror of death, Satan himself. All those forces of evil press in upon Jesus. That's the side of evil. And then you have over here Jesus, alone, by himself. And here's the rules of the contest. Whoever can rise from the dead, he is God. God in the person of Jesus Christ, answers with the lightning of resurrection.Whoever can live forever and overcome our greatest enemy, death itself. That person is God! Jesus Christ has done it. Jesus is Alive! It's the decisive, irrefutable evidence that what Jesus claims is true. He's the LIVING God. Prayer So there is an apologetic use of the resurrection. You know what else it means if Jesus Christ is ALIVE? You can talk to him. If you have ever had someone you love die, you can visit their grave, you can talk to them but you know they are not there. There's no response. You are talking to the air. They aren't there. And they certainly can't do anything for you. But if Jesus Christ rose from the dead, if he's alive, that means you can talk to him. He can actually do something. In the context of the book of James, why did James take us back to Mt Carmel. Why did he take us back to that showdown between Baal and YHWH? Because he wanted to remind us that there is a God who listens to the righteous. You can pray like Elijah, and Jesus because he's ALIVE will listen to you. Let me illustrate the implication of the resurrection. Pray with me: Jesus Christ, God very God, we pray to you this Easter Sunday and we praise you. We praise you for your victory over death. We praise you that you love us. We worship you. We give our lives to you. We love you! Thank you Jesus. That is not play acting. Jesus Christ, the resurrected Lord, hears our prayers, he's listening to us now. He sees us. He understands us. You can have a personal relationship with the God of the Universe because he is alive. So that's the first thing the resurrection demonstrates. Here's the second. If Jesus Christ is Alive that MEANS that: Now listen, very few of us understand the seriousness of the sin problem? Why? Because it's all we've ever known. It's like a man or woman born blind wondering what they are missing out on. But just because you do not know how handicapped you are, does not mean you are not handicapped. Sin has mamed us. Sin has consequence. As surely as you cannot leap out of a building without consequence, we cannot sin without consequence. And the consequence of sin is every form of brokenness we experience on the earth. The brokenness of every relationship is a result of sin The selfishness that destroys marriage The lustful looks of infidelity is the result of sin Death itself, we are told in the Bible is the result of sin. We started this message by reminding ourselves of evil and suffering? Why is there even such a thing as evil? When we are young and protected in our parents homes the world seems so safe. But as we grow older, wooden swords turn to real swords, pretend bullets turn to real bullets, we see real death, real suffering. We see just how cold and empty people really are. We see people drowning in lonliness. We see how cruel the world is. And the response of the heart is, “This all seems so unjust.” In fact, this is the number one reason people reject the Christian faith. It's the number one reason. Why do bad things happen to good people? Listen, the Bible has an answer for that. The first thing to say is that your sense of justice is from God. That's a right response. If it could be demonstrated that bad things happen to good people then you would be justified in dismissing the Christian faith. But you want to know something. Bad things don't happen to good people? Bad things happen to bad people. There's only bad people. This is what the Bible teaches: Romans 3 Now if you want to be outraged at injustice, let your outrage focus on Jesus the Christ. There was one good person. And bad things did happen to him. We read about on good Friday. Here is Jesus, in anticipation of calvary, amazed at the cup of suffering that awaited. He held that cup in his trembling hands, his soul sorrowful even unto death. Is there no other way? There is no other way. So here the perfect lamb of God is nailed to a tree, hoisted into the air to suffer. Here the perfect lamb of God hangs in a buzzing cloud of flies. His flayed back pressed against the tree, the suffering of suffocation as His body droops, the repeated torture of dislocated sockets, the raw wounds the only lever upon which to lift himself to gain breath. Here is the lamb of God plunged into the abyss of anguish. Forgive us Lord for ever coming to this moment with dry eyes. You want to talk about not fair. You want to talk about injustice. That is unjust. You want to talk about bad things happening to good people. What did he ever do to deserve this? There was only one good person and bad things did happen to him but here's the difference: he volunteered. Why? 1 Peter 3 He volunteered to endure this suffering to bear the sins of the world for those who would believe in Him. Jesus died to take away our sins. He died so that he might BRING US TO GOD. What does that mean? Here's what it means. It means that life is ours: What is the greatest philosophical question that has ever been asked? And by the way this is not even slightly debated. All philosophers agree that this is THE great philosophical question. It doesn't matter if you are athestic or theistic. It doesn't matter if you are hindu, muslim, Christian, anamist. It doesn't matter your culture, your family background, your race, gender, anything. Every single person that has ever been born has asked this question? Statistically speaking, we spend the most time thinking about this question. Almost all, if not all, of our decisions are based on our answer to this question. In other words, what is the best possible way to live that brings us the highest level of fulfillment? In other word, how can I be happy? How can I find satisfaction? What is the good life? What binds every human on planet earth together is we are all in constant pursuit of the good life. Here's what's interesting about our culture: We live in a society which has completely jettisoned the idea that there is an ABSOLUTE answer to this question. We have just untethered ourselves from absolutes. The thinking goes like this: the good life could be different for you than it is for me. The good life is something internal to you. It's subjective. And you might be wired such that the good life could be experienced this way. And I might be wired such that the good life is experienced this other way. And so who am I to tell YOU how to achieve that inner sense of well-being? We live in a culture in which not only our good life experience but even our identities are defined by personal choice. Anything that comes from the outside and tries to impose upon either my identity or my happiness is a threat to the good life. And so life is one giant experiment where we hope we can stumble into happiness. Let's not experiment. Let's use reason. There's not multiple ways to solve the problem of being thirsty. To a thirsty person we don't say, “Well, the solution to your thirst problem might be different for you than it is for me.” Why? Because we are biologically made to solve the thirst problem with water. If your thirsty you need water. And in a similar way, there are not multiple ways to solve our spiritual thirst. We are spiritually made to solve our spiritual thirst problem with Jesus Christ. Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” THAT IS THE GOOD LIFE. You want life? Jesus says, “Then come to me.” God tells us over and over again in his Word, death this way; life this way. All the commands of God in the Bible are fences to protect you from death and keep you on the path of joy. Do you see why we are mad as a culture? Do you see why we have just absolutely lost our mind? We have people changing their gender thinking it will make them happy, dressing up as furries, self-identifying in a thousand ways thinking that this will save them. But they have untethered themselves from reality. Full STOP. Let's stop it. Life is being offered to us. Take it! The Christian message is this, both eternal physical life and eternal soul life, the only TRUE good life, IS found through Jesus Christ. The TRUTH we are here to celebrate is that there is truth. The Conclusion What does all this mean for you and I? You might not like the fact there is objective truth. In fact, nobody likes it. Truth is like a blade that cuts if your in it's path. Truth grates against you. But before you reject it out of hand, simply because it is uncomfortable, think about the implications of rejecting truth. TRUTH just exists. It's like gravity. You can't change it. It exists outside of you. It doesn't care if you exist in the same way that gravity doesn't care. It will do what it will do regardless of whether you are here or not here. It will act upon you whether you think it applies to you are not. It just is. If the gospel is truth we can't change it. It's not ours to change. It's not ours to tinker with. We don't own it. Don't say, "I could never submit to a God who sends people to hell.." Let me ask you, “Would you use that same logic with a semi truck on the freeway.” I could never submit to a semi-truck that kill people that are in it's way. I refuse to move off the freeway. Do you see the insanity of that reasoning. The question is this: is it real? Is it true? Will it destroy me or not? Does it offer life or not? To try to change the gospel is trying to argue with a steaming locamotive. We don't break the laws of God, the laws of God break us. We are the breakable things. What if there is a truth that either SHATTERS your LIFE or HEALS your LIFE? Now all that was setup for our closing two verses in the book of James. These are the most unlikely of all verses for Easter. I doubt an Easter message in the history of the Christian religion has focused on these two verses. But we are going to go for it. What are you going to do, “Fire me?” James is going to close the book out on a little bit of a cliffhanger. And to point out the cliffhanger I'm going to get just slightly technical for a second. The last sentence of the book is written with subjunctive verbs. What is a subjunctive verb? It's a verb that has to do with something that could be real, but isn't yet real. It has to do with an action that has not yet occurred. It has to do with a future possibility but as it stands now it's an unreality. The future for the wandering sinner is hanging right here in the balance. What will happen to this wandering sinner? That's the question. Listen, there are many in the room here who have wandered from the truth. And what is the consequence of wandering from the truth both according to this text and also according to logic? Answer: You die. Are you miserable? Do you feel lost? Do you feel unsatisfied? You have wandered from the truth. You have wandered from Jesus Christ, the WAY THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE. That's why you are dying. You've cut yourself off from the vine. You cut yourself off from the source of life. But guess what? Today, you're coming back. Today you are going stop the pursuit of other gods. Your going to give up. And your going to come back to Jesus Christ, the WAY THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE. You're coming back to the fountain of Life. You're coming back to the God who loves you and cares for you and has given his very life for you. Your coming back. All of us. Everyone in this room is coming back to the truth, the truth that changes everything. This place is a place of rescue. Jesus Christ has brought you here today to rescue you. To give you the Truth in the person of Jesus Christ. This is a place of healing. Revival starts today by beholding JESUS CHRIST. Do you see him. Do you see that he demonstrated his love for you dying for you? Do you see that you can be free of the power of sin. You want to know what LIFE is? Life is knowing that nothing can separate you from the Love of God. Life is living for something that lasts. Life is being part of a mission that cannot fail. Life is being part of a movement that will change the world. You want to know why you will change the world? Because you have seen the Lord. Let's stop trying to do it on our own. You cannot save your marriage, save your kids, transform your church, repair your family, overcome your sin patters, absolve your guilt or condemenation, resolve your loneliness or deliver yourself from evil. Turn to the fountain of life. Come thirsty. Drink deeply. There are stories. And then there are true stories. There is fiction and then there is non-fiction. This is REAL. This changes everything. And maybe all this feels like a dream. It feels too good. Frankly your scared to believe it because if it's not true it would undo you completely. That's understandable. It's understandable to fear being fooled. Counterfeits are everywhere. But don't let your fear of counterfeits prevent you from drinking from the fountain of everlasting life. The degree to which we will be happy is the degree to which we align ourselves with the Truth. And the truth is Jesus Christ has died to set you free of your sins and give you life. Let's let the Scriptures reduce this down to it's absolute most simple form. John 3:16. John 3 Here's what you need to do. You just need to respond to Christ today. You might say to yourself, "I don't know how to do that?" Of course you don't. Nobody does. I don't know how to move toward God. I don't even know where he is. Of course you don't. But he knows where you are. God is saving you. The key isn't to do just the exact right religious motions in the exact right sequence. Life begins when you discover that you ACTUALLY want the resurrection life that Jesus is offering. Faith has already begun if you WANT to believe. To want to believe is evidence that life has already started inside you. If you sense you want this, friend, you are beings saved. Jesus is already beginning the resurrection in you. In our natural condition, none of us will never seek the Lord, so if we find ourselves wanting it, he's working. Think of it. The living God… working in us, even now. Listen, life is being offered to all of us in the room. And it's the greatest life of all. I have been a pastor for many years now and watched a lot of people die. I have never personally seen or ever heard of a dying person who, on his death bed, regretted he was a christian. You want to know why? Because nobody regrets being satisfied. Can't you see what is being offered. Life! Life! Life! Take your Bible and read the book of John. Read of Jesus. Behold him and drink. Live. If God is working in your heart right now and you want to respond then come up here and pray with the prayer team. Maybe you feel you want to pray with those who are responding. Then come down here. Come down here and pray! Maybe your scared and saying, I want to come but I don't know what to do. Of course you don't. Nobody does. Who cares. How can you loose if you have the creator of the Universe ready to embrace you. How can you loose if you have the Great Shepherd just ready to take your hand and walk with you and love you. You can't loose.

Ecclesiastes is a book designed to provoke emotion and get us thinking. The preacher – probably Solomon – wrote this to make sense of a good God in a broken and dark world. In this section, he ponders what it means to number our days wisely. You can find the full show notes at https://www.lifeaudio.com/how-to-study-the-bible/ Bible Reading Tip: When we read the bible, we should look for the tone and emotion of the author, as well as the words and structure. In wisdom literature, like Ecclesiastes, we need to see the poetic, literary form that the wisdom is held in. Part 1: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 - Understanding Time Turn, turn, turn by The Byrds - they took these words from Ecclesiastes and made it into a hit song and anthem of a volatile age (1965). Our time is short, full of ups and downs, full of work, and also time to rest. There are times when things are falling apart, and when things are coming together. Application: What would it look like to open your hands and heart and say, “I want to live fully in the day I have”? What season are you in? Is there room for both sides of what is presented here? Joy, and also grief? Work, but also rest? Tearing down, but also building up? We want to avoid lopsided living. Pray to understand what season your loved ones are in as well. Ask God to give you discernment to see and understand where loved ones are, and give them grace and compassion for the place they are in. Part 2: Ecclesiastes 3:9-15 – Our Experience of Time, God's Experience of Time “What do workers gain from their toil?” [cf: Genesis 1-3] – we're trying to figure out work, with knowledge of good and evil, in a way that we can't fully comprehend. But God knows the whole story. God knows all and is above and beyond time, and therefore is the one we can trust. Rightly numbering our days and seasons leads to a content and peaceful human life. Application: Allow seasons to come. Trust that our God is good and sovereign. He knows what is happening in your life and therefore, you can trust him. We have to come to a settled acceptance that there are things God sees and knows that we ourselves will never understand. We want to control things. But we must cede control. This is how we find freedom. Cf: Psalm 90:12: Teach us to number our days, so that we may gain a heart of wisdom. God, who knows all and is beyond time, is the one we can trust. Rightly numbering our days and seasons leads to a content and peaceful human life. “I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live.” What time are you in? What would it look like to live rightly just today? And then trust the rest of your days to the Lord who loves you, knows you, and who already sees how everything is playing out. Why do we do what we do? John Paul II as a philosopher and theologian, threaded a phenomenological approach through his writings and dialogue, appealing to a close and repetitive observation of our human experience as a means of understanding the Truth about who we are and why we exist. In today's episode Colby, Adele & Becki discuss how human experience (Someone's Phenomenology) can shed light on why we exist the way we do. Our Experiences shape who we are and if we are aware of this we can set a good direction for our life. Experiences are important because they shape our attitudes and perceptions, attitudes and perceptions shape expectations and expectations shape behaviors.

FREEING PEOPLE FROM DEMONIC DARKNESS…a Key (THE Key?) in the next move of God Explosion of the Demonic (Days of Noah) * History of the 20th Century – occult, UFO/aliens, drugs, sexual perversion, abortion (infanticide), trafficking, division, fear, transhumanism, globalism* Today's Entertainment (movies, TV, internet gaming)* Our Experiences – evangelism, night terrors, prophetic dream last night* Programming, False Narratives, Hive Mind/Group Think* Roe v. Wade overturned? How was the Pagan Roman Empire Won? Dr. MacMullen (Christianizing the Roman Empire) states unequivocally that the main way Rome was converted to Christianity were healing and, most especially, exorcism. (Francis MacNutt, pg. 87, Healing Reawakening) Professor Ramsey MacMullen – Emeritus Professor of History, Yale University, "the greatesthistorian of the Roman Empire alive today” Ramsey MacMullen Interview – Yale Historian MacMullen: When we consider how the early Christians brought people to Christ, we might think of Paul's preaching. One might think that this “method” was what subsequent generations of Christians employed, but IT AIN'T SO. It didn't happen that way. My guess is that because of the persecution open preaching was simply too difficult most of the time. In contrast what worked best was “one on one talk about the proofs of the truth of Christianity and by proofs, I mean EXORCISM above all. Christianity advertised its own particular powers through driving out demons that caused sickness and driving out all demonic influences in general. Miracle stories are the main reason people came to Christ. As for preaching THERE IS HARDLY A WORD throughout all the centuries I look at – from the early 2nd century through the 10th. VERY, VERY little mention of Christians talking to the unpersuaded and trying to bring them over by reasoning. Instead, what is talked about is the operation of wonderful things by holy people. They wanted the benevolent power the Christians promised. Pagan Rome vs. Pagan America *AD30AD400 “the main way [Pagan] Rome was converted to Christianity were healing and, most especially, exorcism” *AD2022 – “the main way Pagan America WILL BE converted to Christianity WILL BE healing and, most especially, exorcism” What did Jesus do? (emphasis on exorcism) * Acts 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. * Matt. 4:24-25 – and they brought Him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and he healed them * Matt. 8:16 That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick * Matt. 12:22 Then a demonoppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the man spoke and saw. * Matt 17:18 And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed instantly. * Lk. 6:17-19 And he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people…18 who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. And THOSE who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And ALL the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them ALL. A Word about the Origin of Demons * The angels transgressed this appointment and were captivated by love of women. And they begat children [the nephilim], who are those who are called demons. Justin Martyr (AD160) * These angels, then, who have fallen from heaven, and haunt the air and the earth, and are no longer able to rise to heavenly things, and the souls of the giants [nephilim], who are the demons who wander about the world, perform similar actions. Athenagoras (AD175) * Furthermore, we are instructed by our sacred books how from certain angels, who fell of their own free will, there sprang a more wicked demon brood…” Tertullian (AD197) * Among angels, some are angels of God, and others are angels of the devil. But among demons, there is no such distinction. For they are all said to be wicked. Origen (AD 248) * However, those who were born from [the relations of angels with women]—because they were neither angels nor men, but had a mixed nature—were not admitted into Hades [when they died]. Similarly, their fathers had not been admitted into heaven, either. Thus, there came to be two kinds of demons: one of heaven, the other of the earth. The latter are the wicked spirits, who are the authors of all the evils that are done. This same devil is their prince. ...However, grammarians say that the reason they are called demons...is because they are skilled and acquainted with matters. For the grammarians think they are gods. In truth, the demons are acquainted with some future events, but not with all. For He has not permitted them to know entirely the counsel of God. ...As I was saying, these contaminated and abandoned spirits wander over the whole earth. They console their own ruin by destroying others. Therefore, they fill every place with snares, deceits, frauds, and errors. For they cling to individuals and even occupy whole houses, from door to door…(Lactanius AD 304312) A Word about Sickness & the Demonic * “…condemned of God along with the authors of their race. ...Their great business is the ruin of mankind. So, from the start, spiritual wickedness sought our destruction. Accordingly, they [demons] inflict upon our bodies diseases and other grievous calamities. And by violent assaults, they hurry the soul into sudden and extraordinary excesses. ...By an influence equally obscure, demons and angels breathe into the soul, and rouse up its corruptions with furious passions and vile excesses.” Tertullian (AD197) * “...And since spirits are without physical substance and cannot be held, they slink into the bodies of men. Secretly working in their inward parts, they corrupt the health of these persons, bring on diseases, terrify their souls with dreams, and harass their minds with frenzies. They do this so that by these evils, they may cause men to come to them for aid.” Lactantius (AD304313) To Summarize * Demons are NOT Fallen Angels* Demons are the disembodied spirits of the dead Nephilim (their parents are Fallen Angels)* Demons can and do cause sickness, but not all sickness is caused by demons* Freeing people from demons is also called/considered HEALING in the Gospels* Demons are the paranormal entities that we have been given authority over* Fallen Angels & Demons cannot be saved Hebrews 2:16 – “For surely it is NOT angels that He (Christ) helps but Abraham's descendants.” Although there is also assigned to angels perdition in “the fire prepared for the devil and his angels,” yet a restoration is never promised to them. No directive about the salvation of angels did Christ ever receive from the Father. Tertullian (AD 210) What did the 12 Disciples do? * Luke 9:1-2 And He [Jesus] called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom ofGod and to heal… NOTE: WHO/WHAT we have been given authority over What did the 72 do? * Lk. 10:1,8-9, 17-20 After this the Lord appointed seventytwo others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go… 8 Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. 9 Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.' 17 The seventytwo returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” 18 And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” NOTE: 1. WHO/WHAT was subject to them? Principalities? Fallen Cherub? DEMONS 2. Healing/Exorcism – WHERE/WHEN? (v. 8) / WHO? (v. 9) What did the Apostles & the Apostle Paul do? * Acts 5:16 – [to the Apostles] …bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed. * Acts 16:18 - And she was doing this for many days. And Paul, having been greatly-annoyed, and having turned to the spirit, said, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to depart from her!” And it went out at the very hour. * Acts 19:11-12 - And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them, and the evil spirits came out of them. * Acts 28:8-9 - It happened that the father of Publius lay sick with fever and dysentery. And Paul visited him and prayed, and putting his hands on him, healed him. 9 And when this had taken place, the rest of the people on the island who had diseases also came and were cured. 1 Cor. 4:16 - “…I urge you to imitate me” 1 Cor. 11:1 - “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” What did Philip the Deacon do? *Acts 8:4-7 - Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word. 5 Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ. 6 And the crowds with one accord paid attention to what was being said by Philip, when they heard him and saw the signs that he did. 7 For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who had them, and many who were paralyzed, or lame were healed. But didn't the supernatural gifts cease? *Cessationism (and “Practical Cessationism”)*It's a matter of history What did Christians in the 2nd & 3rd Century do? * Irenaeus (late 2nd century, spiritual grandson of the Apostle John) – to followers of false teachers/heretics - “You are unable to heal the blind, the crippled, the deaf, the paralyzed…or to free the demonized…moreover as I have said, the dead even have been raised up, and remained among us for many years” * Tertullian (early 3rd century) – “For what could be more delightful…than to find yourself trampling underfoot the gods of false religions, casting out demons, healing the sick, seeking prophetic revelation and living for God? These are our pleasures, These are our pleasures, the signs, and wonders of Christians holy, eternal and free…count these as your entertainment" (On the Spectacles, Ch. 29) Irenaeus 2.0 * Irenaeus (late 2nd century) - “Those who are in truth His disciples, receiving grace from Him, do in His name perform miracles, so as to promote the welfare of others, according to the gift which each one has received from Him. For some do certainly and truly drive out devils, so that those who have thus been cleansed from evil spirits frequently both believe [in Christ] and join the Church. Others have foreknowledge of things to come: they see visions and speak the prophecies they have received. Others still, heal the sick by laying their hands upon them, and they are healed. Moreover, as I have said, even the dead have been raised and remained among us for many years. And what more can I even say? It is not even possible to number all of the gifts which the Church, throughout the whole world, has received from God, in the name of Jesus Christ, who was crucified under Pontius Pilate, and which Christians demonstrate daily for the benefit of the unbelievers, neither deceiving them nor taking any financial reward from them [on account of such miraculous ministry]. For as Christians have received freely from God, freely also do they minister [to others]**. (Against Heresies, book 2, chapter 32, section 4) What were Future Disciples expected to do? * Matt. 28:20 – “…teaching them to observe everything I have commanded YOU….until the end of the age” NOTE: Do WHAT? Until WHEN? * Mk. 16:18 – “…they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover” HOW SHALL WE THEN LIVE?? If “the main way Pagan America WILL BE converted to Christianity WILL BE healing and, most especially, exorcism” * KNOW the demonic is only going to increase (“as in the days of Noah”)* Share the Gospel with the supernatural/demonic in mind – be transparent!* WWJD in 2022? What He did in AD30. What disciples did in AD200.* Normal works? “and he cast out the spirits with a word" / Greater works?* Fasting? “this kind [of demon] only come out by prayer AND fasting” (Mk. 9:29)* Holiness in 2022 - “Do not give the devil a place [topos]” (Eph. 4:27)* Get around those who are moving in the power you long for* “If you can live without something, you will! (Mike Bickle)* “I will never change the channel again!” (Bill Johnson)
