Are budget airlines ready to abandon their low-cost roots?

Budget airlines in the U.S. face significant challenges as larger airlines successfully attract premium customers. Delta and United Airlines have maintained their presence in the budget market while pressuring low-cost carriers like Spirit Airlines, which has filed for bankruptcy after incurring losses over $2.2 billion since early 2020. Frontier Airlines has not posted a profit since 2019 and Allegiant Air has seen reduced earnings, although it remains profitable. Low-cost carriers have struggled with rising wages eroding their cost advantage and increased competition from larger airlines offering basic economy tickets. Many budget airlines have also become less efficient, experiencing overextended operations and increased costs per mile. In response, they are pivoting toward premium service offerings and adjusting fare structures. Southwest plans to end its open seating policy to align with customer preferences for assigned seating, reflecting a broader trend for premium experiences. Overall, while budget carriers face difficulties in the U.S., similar airlines are thriving in regions like Asia and Europe, highlighting differing market dynamics. California's Crack Down on Travel Junk Fees

Skift

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 19, 2023 4:08

Episode Notes California is looking to crack down on so-called junk fees at hotel and short-term rentals. The state's legislators have passed two bills that could impact how California's hotels and short-term rentals inform consumers about those fees, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill.    Senate Bill 537 would prohibit businesses that sell lodging for up to 30 days in California from displaying room rates that don't include all fees or charges, except for government-mandated taxes. Senate Bill 478 would block California businesses from advertising prices without including mandatory fees or charges, with some exceptions.  The bills are on the desk of Governor Gavin Newsom, who has yet to take a position on them. While the California Hotel & Lodging Association has expressed support for the final version of the bills, Expedia Group and Airbnb both raised concerns about it.  Next, Florida has seen an enormous boom in vacation rentals in recent years. But the state's short-term rental industry is facing a profit squeeze with soaring labor and construction costs, writes Short-Term Rental Reporter Srividya Kalyanaraman. Kalyanaraman writes that while Florida has always been a formidable destination for vacation rentals, it's becoming more unaffordable for visitors and residents. She adds the main factor behind Florida's soaring inflation is the high cost of housing. The surging cost of housing and growing economic divide between out-of-state investors and Florida residents has been blamed for pricing locals out.  Kalyanaraman cited Miami as one Florida city that's seen an enormous demand for short-term rentals. However, an executive at real estate developer Newgard Development Group said despite the demand, it's getting more expensive to build properties with lenders tightening big construction loans. In addition, the state has experienced a shortage of labor needed to maintain and service those rentals. Finally, despite the recent boom in air travel in the U.S., the country's aviation industry is still suffering from a pilot shortage. Associate Editor Rashaad Jorden turns to Ask Skift, our artificial intelligence chatbot, for answers why. Jorden notes concerns about pilot shortages are nothing new, with thousands of U.S. pilots approaching mandatory retirement age. But major carriers made the problem worse by encouraging staff to retire early or accept voluntary leave to help avoid massive layoffs during the pandemic. Officials at budget carrier Allegiant Air said U.S. airlines are short 17,000 pilots this year. That number could double by 2032.   In addition, Edward Russell, editor of Skift publication Airline Weekly, reported regional airlines have been the hardest hit by pilot shortage. Crews are leaving regional carriers for jobs at major airlines faster than the regionals have been able to replace the departed staff.

Hyatt Thinks a Return to Offices Could Boost Business Travel

Episode Notes Hyatt has seen signs that more workers in big cities are returning to their offices. That could result in the company eventually seeing more business travelers, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill.  CEO Mark Hoplamazian said at a recent conference that some of its New York hotels are seeing increased levels of local traffic, a sign of more people back in their offices. Hoplamazian added the increased traffic doesn't necessarily mean pre-Covid levels of business travel. But he said it's an indication of more activity in offices that will eventually boost the sector's recovery. Hoplamazian also expressed confidence that business travel would rebound fully.  Next, budget carriers Allegiant Air and Frontier Airlines are poised to profit significantlyif U.S. authorities approve JetBlue Airways' proposed merger with Spirit Airlines, reports Edward Russell, editor of Skift publication Airline Weekly.   JetBlue said on Monday that Allegiant would receive Spirit's assets at Boston Logan and Newark Airports under divestiture agreements reached by JetBlue. In addition, Frontier would gain Spirit's assets at New York's LaGuardia Airport. Russell notes both Allegiant and Frontier could expand their operations at the above-mentioned airports.  However, the agreements between JetBlue and Allegiant and Frontier are subject to the JetBlue-Spirit merger being approved by the U.S. government. The U.S. Justice Department has sued to block the deal on the basis of concerns about competition.  Finally, business travel has made significant progress in its recovery, but will spending in the sector fully rebound? Associate Editor Rashaad Jorden turns to Ask Skift, our artificial intelligence chatbot, for answers. Jordan reports that the state of business travel's recovery varies across the world. Corporate travel volumes were reported as of August to be at least 30% below 2019 levels globally. While a majority of India-based businesses expect business travel to increase this year, executives at several U.S. and European airlines have said in recent months the sector's rebound has plateaued.  But the Global Business Travel Association projected last month that corporate travel spending would surpass pre-Covid levels faster than expected. The group anticipates spending will hit $1.52 trillion in 2024, two years of a previous prediction.

Delays can be very frustrating and have serious consequences. But in this message we are looking at how our Lord wants us to be like Him, on time all the time!Foundational Verse: Psalms 119:60 (KJV)  I made haste, and “delayed” not to keep thy commandments. *Text: James 1:16-27 (KJV) Do not err, my beloved brethren. [17] Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. [18] Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. [19] Wherefore, my beloved brethren, LET EVERY MAN BE SWIFT TO HEAR, slow to speak, slow to wrath: [20] For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. [21] Wherefore lay apart all filthiness to and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. [22] But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, DECEIVING YOUR OWN SELVES. [23] For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: [24] For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. [25] But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. [26] If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. [27] Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.Note verse 19: "LET EVERY MAN BE SWIFT TO HEAR, slow to speak, slow to wrath:"(Ecclesiastes 5:2 (KJV) Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.)(James 3:6 (KJV) And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.)And verse 22: "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves"!Note "SWIFT"  (TACHUS) to be prompt or ready - see (TACHU) without delay suddenly!Note "DECEIVING your own selves" - see Colossians 2:4 BEGUILED! When the Holy Spirit drops the TRUTH - JESUS THE LIVING WORD into your heart and you don't respond you have beguiled yourself! Ask Skift Is the AI Chatbot for the Travel Industry: Ask Skift Your Questions Episode Notes Trivago opted not to join the advertising unit that Google launched in May to attract hotel bookings. That decision contributed to the online travel agency's disappointing second quarter performance, reports Executive Editor Dennis Schaal.   Schaal writes that Trivago's absence in the new unit — unlike rivals such as Booking.com, Priceline and Expedia — negatively impacted its second quarter financial results. Trivago's revenue fell 14% from the previous year. Trivago Chief Financial Officer Matthias Tillmann said on Wednesday it decided not to participate in Google's property promotions ads because they are a part of Google hotel ads, which don't perform well for Trivago.   Next, the chief technology officer of travel technology firm Sabre stepped down last month, a departure that coincides with other major job cuts and changes in leadership, writes Travel Technology Reporter Justin Dawes.  Dawes reported that David Moore left Sabre last month after seven years with the company. The change comes as Sabre continues its biggest tech transformation ever, namely its transition to Google Cloud, which is expected to be completed by the beginning of 2025.  Finally, Allegiant Air successfully rode its strategy of mostly flying on specific days[Access for Skift Pro and Airline Weekly subscribers only] and to its most popular destinations to a strong second quarter, reports Edward Russell, editor of Airline Weekly, a Skift publication.  The Las Vegas-based discount carrier saw revenue increase 9% in the second quarter from last year. It also reported a $133 million operating profit. Russell writes Allegiant is unique among U.S. airlines in that it typically only flies on peak days, an approach that has helped it profitably serve many U.S. smaller and medium-sized cities.  Russell adds that Allegiant's rivals are taking steps to emulate its success. Southwest, Frontier and JetBlue have all unveiled plans to reduce flying on off-peak days.

The National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) is very honored to introduce the start of a four-part conversation between two incredibly inspiring women in the world of aviation. NATCA's own Jamie Sanders, an air traffic controller at Denver Centennial Tower (APA), who is also an experienced pilot, recently sat down for a virtual interview of Major Katie Cook, the first female pilot in the storied history of the great Blue Angels team of the United States Navy. Major Cook is a third-generation military aviator. Her paternal grandfather served during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Her father had a 26-year long career in the Navy and was an F-18 fighter pilot. Carrying on the family legacy, she joined the Marine Corps after graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2008. She made the choice to go into the Marine Corps, after spending time training with Marines in Quantico, Va. During her time in the Marine Corps, she was one of the few female pilots to fly combat missions during her deployment to Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom. After that, she spent time on assignment in Uganda, and had already accrued over 400 combat flight hours. It was during her time in Africa that she was approached by a Blue Angel pilot, who encouraged her to apply for the coveted flight demonstration team. Following an extensive interview process, Maj. Cook was officially the first female Blue Angel, and became the pilot of the Lockheed C–130 Hercules named “Fat Albert.” Jamie grew up in an aviation family as well. Her father was an American Airlines pilot and her great aunt, Emily Howell Warner, was the first female commercial airline pilot. At 15 years old, Jamie began flying lessons out of Denver Centennial and got her private pilot license when she was 16. She had planned on flight instructing. However, the tragic events of 9/11 froze all hiring of flight instructors. She decided to take out a loan and partner with another pilot, flying all over the country to build flight time. After a little over a year, she came back to Colorado to finish her degree in Aviation Technology and began flight instructing. Jamie got her first airline job flying for Great Lakes Aviation, out of Denver International Airport in 2003. In 2009, Jamie was hired with Allegiant Air. In 2011 she was selected by the Federal Aviation Administration to start training at the ATC academy in OKC. At the time, her husband had been furloughed from United Airlines for seven years and she was pregnant with her first child. Jamie was ready for a career change, and ATC was the perfect fit. She worked at Pueblo ATCT (PUB), then Colorado Springs ATCT (COS) before transferring in 2019 to APA. In this first episode of the four-part series, Jamie and Major Cook discuss their careers and their background.

That weekend, she took her first flight in a small aircraft to the AOPA fly-in. A month later, she was camping under the wing at EAA AirVenture and soon after started looking for an aviation career to support her recreational flying. In 2001 she applied for a scholarship offered by the Airline Dispatchers Federation and was awarded the scholarship at the Women in Aviation conference that year. He founded Beyond Pricing, which helps vacation rentals and Airbnbs maximize their revenue through innovative software products and which has raised over $45m in venture capital from top-tier investors including Bessemer.   In this episode, Ian shares his expertise on pricing vacation rentals and how to optimize revenue earned from them.    “Expose a bit of that black box. As you said, there might be just a couple of factors. There’s a lot of things that go into the factors, but if you can show like the prices up because of the seasonality versus an event, that creates a lot of trust and if you can show some of the underlying data trends that support that kind of recommendation and decision, it helps out a lot.”   – Ian Mc Henry     Get Accelerate Your Subscription Business: Your Blueprint to Packaging & Pricing for Growth Course at https://www.championsofvalue.com      Topics Covered:     01:13 – What is Beyond  Pricing Company  02:27 – What paved the way for him to Pricing  03:55 – How to optimize pricing for only a single unit in Airbnb  05:00 – How to look at external demand data to come up with vacation rental pricing  06:57 – What other information do they have to pull, especially if there’s  a one-time event coming up  11:44 – How not to underprice or overprice your vacation rentals  16:05 – How does Ian price their own product  21:53 – On trusting the data versus using the data in a black box  20:23 – His pricing advice that impacts one’s business: “Play with data and segment a lot.”    Key Takeaways:    “I knew it wasn’t true when property managers told us we can’t make income from vacation rentals. I had all the data that tell otherwise. At any rate, we ended up making a lot of money off of it because it was really easy to capture that demand by just dynamically pricing it properly.” – Ian McHenry    “If you’re really trying to figure out to do, play with data and segment a lot like trying to understand demand and willingness to pay across all different kinds of segments you find interesting. I’ve found that you find interesting stuff just playing with the data.” – Ian McHenry    “If you’re building a product like ours where you do have buyers of that data that they need to trust the algorithm and not have it be a black box, one last thing is like expose as much as you can without necessarily giving away the secret sauce because a lot of the problem is getting buy-in for these predictions that you’ve made. – Ian McHenry    “Expose a bit of that black box. Like you said, there might be just a couple of factors. There’s a lot of things that go into the factors, but if you can show like the prices up because of the seasonality versus an event, that creates a lot of trusts and if you can show some of the underlying data trends that support that kind of recommendation and decision, it helps out a lot.” – Ian McHenry     People / Resources Mentioned:  JetBlue  Allegiant Air  Oliver Wyman  Southwest Airlines  Smith Travel Research   Hertz  Andrew Watterson  Scot Hornick    Connect with Ian McHenry:  LinkedIn  E: ian.mchenry@gmail.com  https://beyondpricing.com/   Connect with Mark Stiving   Email: mark@impactpricing.com   LinkedIn   Twitter   https://www.championsofvalue.com

Let’s face it; we’ve all had bad days at work. Done stupid things, even. Not that we’d tell anyone about them. Moving on. The South Carolina Gamecocks squared off against the Texas A&M Aggies in a weirdly beautiful symphony of stupid miscues sprinkled in with brilliant overtures. Despite holding the ball for more than 41 minutes of game time, they only managed a three-point win after a botched onside kick left our strange new SEC step-brothers the opportunity to screw up the victory formation, which they almost did. This game had everything, but so did the rest of Week Seven. We all talk about that one week that has ALL of the upsets. This was BLOOD WEEK, Y’ALL! Except this week could’ve been so much worse. We talk about our losers (including COACH FIGHTS) and our winners (hint: gumbo is involved), and we even give y’all a glorious dose of the beautiful mess that is Paul Johnson’s band of misfit pirates. Bees. Whatever. Paul Johnson is a treasure. Licking our wounds doesn’t come close to describing this week’s episode: we dive into the rest of the season, and give our honest assessment of where the program is versus the bill of goods we were sold. In any event, the Gamecocks play our dreaded rival BYE WEEK, so, in addition to our usual nonsense, we decided to take a look at the game we’re most interested to watch, since we don’t have to spend all of Saturday breathing into an Allegiant Air issued barf bag. There are some good ones. Hope y’all enjoy. There are some jokes, some bad stories, hopefully some insight, and definitely some TAEKS. We really hope you enjoy and can’t wait to do it again with y’all next week. Thank you!
