This week's Misfit Entrepreneur is Robert Burr. Bob is one of kind. He's been in the oil business for over 40 years and has generated hundreds of millions of dollars during his career. He's shared the stage with everyone from Robert Kiyosaki to Peter Schiff educating people on the opportunities, benefits, and risks of investing in oil and gas. Bob is a master syndicator and deal strategist…but you know what, he retired a number of years ago and after spending almost every day on the golf course and with grandkids, he felt the urge to come back. It it was the pandemic that made him jump back in with both feet because it created some of the best oil and gas opportunities he says he's ever seen. I asked him to come on to share his wealth of knowledge on investing in oil and gas and his philosophies on business. www.Burrite.com admin@burrite.com Bob started out in the insurance business in the 70's and had huge success. He was making more money than he ever thought he would. His brother got into the oil business and recruited him to help sell the investments. His brother would run the business and he would raise the money. The timing proved to be tough as it came right as oil and gas embargoes started, but they worked their way through and went on to have massive success over many years. As Bob says, “It wasn't easy, but it has been a passionate, life-fulfilling mission that he would not trade.” Bob wrote about his story in his book, Leaving Your Pack. At the 6 min mark, Bob talks about a conversation with his dad that helped put him on his path and about “being in the game.” “ The day I can no longer compete in life is the day I hope God takes me…” All this is, life, is a big game and we get to play and compete every day. Everyone has 24 hours. You have to show up for your 24 hours and keep showing up. Talk to us about the types of things and deals you do in oil and gas… Bob talks first about the geological side and how it is very hard when starting. You have to try multiple fields to find one that is good. He hit big on one field and sold it in the early 90's to marathon and was able to retire. After many years of retirement, his boys got into the business. He decided to help them avoid a lot of the early mistakes and come out of retirement. One of the benefits of oil and gas is the tax advantages – up to 90% in the first year against your income. Bob raises money to drill his wells and targets a 3-year payout alongside the tax advantage. He focuses on good, solid income producing wells that will product for many years. The drop in oil prices during the virus was an opportunity of a lifetime for him and his investors. What are the risks that people should know about when investing in oil and gas? Conventional new well drilling is successful about 20% of the time, so pretty risky. Bob focuses on proven oil fields that are already producing and getting a piece of them. Proven production and proven recoverable reserves are key to limiting risk. In some cases, Bob will drill the well with his money to test it out and if he finds oil, he will then use investor money to build the well out. This is least risky for the investor. Bob is obsessed with making money for his investors and has built his reputation on it. At the 26 min mark, Bob talks about the tax-free way to “roll” oil gains like a 1031 exchange and defer taxes… What are the principles you build your businesses on? Bob wasn't great with people – his brother ran the business side and Bob brought in the money. But then he lost his brother and had to come to grips with who he was and change because he was a selfish person. He soul searched and really made a commitment to become someone who truly loves his people. Initially, he thought he would “fake it til he made it,” but in the act of caring and putting his people first, he began to change and become that person. It's the same with partners/investors – without them, you cannot win, so take care of them and help them. “In order to have a successful business, you have to sincerely, from your soul, love your people.” Other great lessons about entrepreneurship and how to succeed from your journey? Getting into a deal is a lot easier than getting out of one. It's better to kill a deal than to get into a bad one. Be so sensitive. Don't do business with people that have an acidic personality. Do business with people that have a soul and heart. Success is not easy. Educate yourself to be ready and know the good and bad sides and be prepared either way.   Best Quote: In order to have a successful business, you have to sincerely, from your soul, love your people.   Bob's Misfit 3: You can't do anything without passion. If you are not being fulfilled spiritually, you cannot give it every it requires. You must have total commitment. Once you decide, commit. Take care of your spiritual relationship with God and love people.   Show Sponsors: Free Account of 50% off Premium on Issuu: www.Issuu.com/Podcast promo code: Misfit 5 Minute Journal:  www.MisfitEntrepreneur.com/Journal

On today's episode, Bob Proctor reveals the power of the mind. He points out that what you see in the physical world is nothing but the manifestation of the thoughts and ideas you cultivate in your mind. If you can build an image of something in your mind, then you're already capable of creating a physical replica of it in your world. What a person thinks he or she becomes. So you've got to shift your viewpoint and focus on thinking about how you can achieve your goals and not why you can't. As Bob reminds us, “You are the only problem you will ever have, and you are the only solution.”Source: Proctor Gallagher Institute 24/7 Live Stream | Bob ProctorHosted by Sean Croxton.Follow me on IG at instagram.com/seancroxton

As Bob from Feedstories puts it, "every business starts with a story." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GD8KPAbkmjI Transcription Brian: Who's the ideal person that would benefit the most from Feedstories? Bob: We like to work with people that have some sort of mission or purpose behind what they do. Every business starts with a story. I think if you don't start with a story, or you don't start with a reason why it's not really interesting to us, and probably you're not going to have lasting value. We love pulling the backstory out of somebody, it really gets to the heart of why they do what they do. We do these videos called Big Why Videos. And it's really amazing to kind of just hear from people like, why do they do what they do? We interviewed this guy, he was down in Texas, and he started a whole chain of yoga studios, and he wanted to start this academy for training more yoga teachers. And that's a great business, right? Like, you think Yoga is hot. He's in Texas, he's growing like, fantastic. Well, in our interview process, and what we got a video was the reason why he started the yoga studios, which was his mom had back issues when she was alive, and she went in for surgery. And, you know, he was kind of nervous about that ended up that the surgeons kind of botched the surgery, and she lost most of the ability in her legs. And she suffered for a number of years. He really felt that if yoga was an option for his mom, she went and had the surgery and she would've had a long quality of life. And you could see like the passion, right? And this is all on video. Now, if you're a yoga teacher, and you see the passion from this yoga owner, and he's like, I want yoga to be an alternative for people to have surgery, freedom from pain, and things like that really powerful, right? That's why video is so powerful. Now, we love working with kind of owner-operators, okay. Typically we're working with companies that are like somewhere underneath $10 million. So from startup to 10 million, we have and we'll work with companies that are bigger, but when we can get the owner on camera and get his or her story about why they do what they do. Talk with the clients and the customers of these businesses. That's really an ideal client for us when there's a substantial story there and we can pick up on it and about a 15-minute phone call, then they're a really good candidate for us. Last year on the podcast, Bob introduced you to the crazy case of an elderly couple, their son and their car -- how the government seized it, even though they were innocent. Bob also introduced you to Paul Avelar, Managing Attorney of the Institute for Justice Arizona Office who represented them in trying to get their car back, and later represented a truck driver who had a massive amount of cash seized for the simple reason that he came to Arizona with a lot of cash (to purchase a truck)! Avelar was a key player in helping drive Arizona's new bipartisan civil asset forfeiture reform law, HB 2810. "Civil forfeiture threatens everyone's property and due process rights," Avelar told reason.com: "The government can take your car, your home, and your life savings without ever charging you with a crime, much less convicting you. HB 2810 makes important reforms to Arizona's forfeiture laws to protect innocent property owners from government abuse." As Bob told you then, civil forfeiture  is "based on the legal fiction that property can be guilty even when its owner is innocent.” It allows the government to confiscate your assets without your ever being accused of a crime, let alone being  convicted. It's big business nationwide, and the forfeiture funds are often used for funding policing tools, leading to the term "Policing for Profit!"  Arizona's  new H.B. 2810 addresses that problem by requiring a criminal conviction prior to forfeiture in most cases.Under the law, property can still be seized based on probable cause to believe it was used to commit a crime or represents the proceeds of illegal activity. But now the government can complete the forfeiture only after convicting the owner. That new rule applies to all forfeitures except when the owner has died or fled, no longer lives in the United States, has abandoned the property, has agreed to surrender it as part of a plea deal, or has received immunity from prosecution in exchange for his testimony.  The law also addresses roadside waivers, where holders of property of cash were often bullied into signing away their property or cash in order to not be arrested.  Does the law go far enough?  How close is Arizona's law to the New Mexico "Gold Standard," for protecting citizens from unlawful or unfair seizure?  Listen now and find out!

Guest Bios Bob Williams, Policy Director of CommunicationFIRST, helped to co-found the organization in 2019, after retiring from a distinguished four-decade career in federal and state government and the nonprofit sector, most recently as Director of the US Independent Living Administration at the US Department of Health and Human Services. He is a nationally recognized leader on policy issues relating to supporting people with the most significant disabilities to live, work, and thrive in their own homes and communities. For over 60 years, Mr. Williams has relied on an array of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies, including a series of speech generating devices over the past three decades. He lives with his wife in Washington, DC, where they enjoy visits with the grandkids, walking along the riverfront, Netflix binges, and all things Springsteen. Tauna Szymanski became the Executive Director and Legal Director of CommunicationFIRST in 2019. Previously, she spent twenty years working on climate change law and policy, including 13 years at an international law firm in London and Washington, DC, where she volunteered and represented clients pro bono in disability rights and inclusive education matters. Ms. Szymanski has graduate degrees in law and public policy. She grew up around the world as the child of US Foreign Service Officers and is multiply disabled.   In today’s episode you will: Learn about CommunicationFIRST’s efforts to advocate for policy reform in order to protect and advance the rights of individuals with speech-related disabilities Hear the story behind the June 2020 ruling to protect the rights of individuals with communication disability to have access to their communication support partner in the hospital, even during Covid Find out the benefits to filling out the Communication Tool Kit before a person with aphasia enters a hospital Learn about using the Hospital Visitation checklist offered by CommunicationFIRST Find out why we talk about Bruce Springsteen   Edited show notes:  Greetings to our Podcast listeners, This is Ellen Bernstein-Ellis, your host today, and you’re listening to an updated version of episode 68 with CommunicationFIRST. Let me share what happened to the original podcast because there's a valuable lesson in this story. Bob Williams, one of the guests that you’ll be meeting shortly, uses an assistive device to speak. He is indeed an eloquent and powerful speaker, as you will soon hear.  Bob spends considerable time preparing for interviews by prerecording content on his device since real time responses can be time consuming. However, as a matter of principle, Bob always opens his presentations by typing in real time in order to educate the public by providing some insight into the fuller experience of being an AAC user. The remainder of his interview responses are played at a more typical speaking rate. Unfortunately, because I didn't provide explicit instructions to our podcast producer, Bob’s response in that section of the podcast was edited from  four and a half minutes to 30 seconds to eliminate the audio lag. I failed to catch this unexpected revision in the final copy before it was posted.  I want to thank Bob, and Tauna, our other guest, for bringing this to our attention so we could redo the episode and restore his original response as it was delivered. I sincerely offer my apologies and appreciate their gracious understanding as we worked together to resolve this issue. Thank you too to our podcast producer for quickly responding to our concerns. To our listeners, Bob’s first response is a small but important window into the effort it takes to be an AAC user and also how to be a respectful listener and effective communication partner.  I found Bob and Tauna's interview profoundly impactful. They are passionate, expert advocates, as their mission states,  in advancing the rights, autonomy, opportunity, and dignity of people with speech-related communication disabilities and conditions. Be sure to check out the CommunicationFIRST website at www.communicationfirst.org Interviewer: Ellen Bernstein-Ellis Welcome to both of you today. Thank you for being here Bob, do you want to add anything to your impressive bio? What brought you to CommunicationFIRST?   I want to explain to our listeners that for this response, you're going to respond in real time, which means the listener is going to hear some typing as you compose your response. Thank you, Bob. Bob Williams  Thank you. Over 50 years ago, my parents, brothers and sisters, and I started to figure out ways I could express myself and that is why we can have this conversation. CommunicationFIRST is committed to making certain that all children and adults, and older Americans with disabilities that need ACC get that same chance. Bob, you and I spoke before the interview of how important it was to actually demonstrate to show how laborious and effortful it is for people with communication disabilities to communicate effectively, and to how important is for the partner to be patient and develop good listening skills. And you're actually the one who pointed out the corollary with individuals with aphasia, who may also need the partner to give them more time and have more patience so they can participate fully in the conversation. So thank you for sharing that and making sure that lesson is out there today.  I'd like to share my first lesson about being a good communication partner for someone using AAC, because I set up our tech meeting, and learned the hard way that the password was actually a barrier to you joining our meeting. By the time we figured out the problem, there just wasn't time for you to participate because you had another Zoom meeting you had to attend. And that one was at the White House, so that meeting won out. It left me totally impressed, of course. I decided this was a good lesson to share with our listeners. I've learned a lot in preparing and appreciate this honor of working with you for this interview. Thank you. Bob, how do you get ready for something like this that involves prepared and live responses? Bob Williams  I prepare most of what I am going to say in advance. Having worked with members of Congress, a cabinet secretary, and others who place a high value in brevity, has really developed my skills. To do this, I cut and paste, and repurpose as much as what I can, but it is time intensive. For the last 30 years, I have composed everything on my computer and transferred it to my speech generating device, which has advantages and downsides. Now, I am starting to experiment with the hybrid approach. You heard what I spelled out on my device. And what you are hearing now is the read aloud feature which is included in Microsoft Word. That voice quality is better and it cuts out the transferring and other hassles. Once I get the routine down, I am confident it will improve things. Responding to things in real time is never easy. It is just something you deal with as best you can. Bob, before we started recording, you explained that there will be some pauses between our questions because you have to physically reposition the cursor to read your next response. I just want to give the listener a heads up that they may have to wait a moment. Getting back to what you just said, Bob, what are the implications of what you shared for the people we work with who have aphasia? Bob Williams  If there is anything I want you to take away from what I say, it is this, the people you work with are making huge motoric and cognitive effort to express themselves and to be understood, regardless of whether they are using a speech generating device or not. The work they do is often Herculean. But many never realize that and view individuals with aphasia and others with significant expressive disabilities as less than, as having little to no human need, ability, or right to express themselves and to be heard. Because you and I know better, our most fundamental duty is to shatter this narrative. The idea that we can acquiesce and be complicit in letting people live incommunicado must become morally repugnant. Bob, that gave me the chills. It's so eloquent and so beautiful. Thank you. I think it leads us to the next question. It’s about the passion you and Tauna both share for communication access.  What are the mission and values of CommunicationFIRST? Bob Williams  We often get asked how we can expect to defend and expand on the civil rights and opportunities of people who seem to have nothing in common, except, of course, that we are voiceless and powerless. I was among those who was asked much the same question about what was then seen as this pipedream called the Americans with Disabilities Act. It is true we are diverse demographically, in terms of the disabilities and conditions we have, when and how we acquired them, how we communicate and a host of factors.  But here is what unites us. Like all people, we have the same intrinsic human need. The same human capacity and the same inalienable human and civil rights to effectively express ourselves and to be understood. Recognizing these truths about ourselves, that there is strength in our numbers, and recognizing we have rights and must demand them. These are the essential building blocks of CommunicationFIRST and the human and civil rights and liberties movement we are forging.  Thank you, Bob. My next question is for you, Tauna. Who do you serve? And what is your connection to aphasia? Tauna Szymanski  Thank you, Ellen, for the invitation to join your podcast today. This is actually our first podcast, so we're having a lot of fun with this. As Bob suggested, CommunicationFIRST is a very broad and diverse organization in terms of the group of people we seek to represent. So, the one commonality is that we will seek to advance the interests and the rights of anyone who cannot rely on speech to be understood, and that includes people who were born with a speech disability, and those who acquire a condition or disability later in life that makes speech communication difficult, and that includes people with aphasia. I'd like to hear a little more about the history of CommunicationFIRST. Tauna Szymanski  Sure. Well, as you noted earlier, we were only founded about 18 months ago. We publicly launched in October of 2019. It really came about over the prior few prior few years, as we realized that there were well established organizations. effective organizations, that represented people with the other two types of communication disabilities, vision and hearing disabilities, but strangely, not a single organization that really worked on the third type of communication disability, speech related disabilities. So there were, you know, there are some organizations for professionals and there's organizations that sort of worked on broader issues impacting folks with intellectual and developmental disabilities, some of whom have speech related disabilities, but no one who's really focused on the rights and interests of this large population, which is just equally as large as those other two communication disabilities. It came about because of the realization and the fact that the issues are just as intractable, if not more so, than for the other two populations of people with communication disabilities. I'm really grateful that you collaboratively started this organization. I didn't realize it was a new one, because you have already accomplished so much, just looking at your website. How are you seeking to achieve your mission?  Bob Williams  Well, it begins like everything else involving changing hearts and minds. Creating greater justice must begin in conversations like this one. Most of all, it takes creating the opportunity, spaces, and support for more of us who need AAC to get to know each other. And to recognize that we share not just the same kind of challenges, prejudice, and discrimination in common, but that the civil rights, accommodations, and support also are largely the same. And we share a common responsibility to each other to bring such changes about. Thank you. You are an eloquent speaker. Can you explain why CommunicationFIRST views this as right as a civil rights challenge?  Bob Williams  The National Aphasia Association 2020 survey on public awareness surveyed 1001 persons asking if having a speech disability is a sign that someone has an intellectual disability. Fortunately, 58% of the respondents said they either strongly or somewhat disagreed that is a true statement. But 42% said they either strongly or somewhat agreed with the statement. You and I know there is nothing soft or benign about the bigotry of low expectations. Or of social isolation, institutionalization and a lifetime incommunicado. We all have witnessed its absurd and horrid injustices. It is time to call it what it is. And to end it. This is why we do this work and need allies like all of you to join in. We have to work together. That is absolutely right. We're always stronger together. What is something big that you've learned during COVID, about healthcare ACC disparities? Tauna Szymanski  I can try to start out with this one. So as I mentioned, we launched only six months before COVID broke out. So, we had to very quickly pivot our plan or rollout for the first year to addressing what we quickly realized would be a very significant issue impacting our population-- one slice of which we knew would be these new no visitor policies in hospital and congregate care settings.  Especially because we know that virtually everyone in our population who has expressive communication disabilities needs some kind of human physical support in order to communicate. After everything shut down, and hospitals started implementing these no visitor policies, we issued toolkits about rights. Then we started getting calls about this issue and, in the course of doing that work, I personally have really come to appreciate and develop a much broader and deeper understanding of what communication really is and how much broader it is than just speech and hearing and vision.  Also how individualized communication and communication supports are. That's something that's actually been a personal blessing to me and in the work as we started with this organization. It's been an unexpected gift, really. Thank you for sharing that, Tauna. And Bob, do you want to speak to something you've learned during COVID and health and AAC disparities? Bob Williams  We have known about the deep disparities in health, education, and economic well-being that are part of the everyday lives of African Americans and other people of color with and without disabilities long before the pandemic and the vile white supremacy of the last several years. Because of the work of the National Black Association for Speech, Language and Hearing, as well as researchers and practitioners like Dr. Charles Ellis, and others, we are learning more. Not just that black, indigenous people of color and those who are multilingual are more likely to acquire more significant degrees of like aphasia, Parkinson, TBI and early onset disabilities like cerebral palsy, which require them to use an array of communication and other services and supports. But they also face disproportionate barriers and discrimination in accessing the services, AAC, and assistive technology required to each lead a decent life. Absolutely. And I'm admirer of Dr. Charles Ellis's work as well. So Bob, what needs to happen to get policymakers to understand and address both the systemic barriers as well as effective practices that research is identifying? And how can we help to elevate the need for action. Bob Williams  I mentioned Dr. Ellis, a leading expert on aphasia among black people and the director of the Communication Equity and Outcomes Laboratory at East Carolina University. Over the past several months, I have read his work as well as that of others doing similar research. And I think it's accurate to say we know and are learning more about what inequity in access to AAC and communication supports look like, as well as its devastating effects it has on people. We must now create urgency around what communication equity must look like and what we must do to retain it. In January, we prepared and were joined by 47 other organizations in submitting a Communication Equity Call to Action to provide the Biden administration. In it, we call on them to take concrete actions to create equal access to AAC, regardless of one's race, disability, age, language, or other status. Check it out on our website. And we will be glad to talk to anyone who wants to become more involved in our efforts. Thank you, thank you, for the work you're doing. That leads to the topic of what introduced me to CommunicationFIRST as an organization this summer in the first place. Could you please tell our listeners how you met Patient GS, that patient who's actually behind the June 2020 ruling to protect the rights of individuals with communication disability to have access to their communication support partner in a hospital setting, even during COVID?  Tauna Szymanski  As I mentioned earlier, in March of 2020, we issued a COVID-19 Communication Rights toolkit, which was designed to be a way or resource for folks who were going into the hospital due to COVID, who needed to ensure that they could access the communication support they needed in that environment, even if that communication support needed to be another human being.  So in other words, it was an accommodation request under disability rights laws for someone with a communication disability to be provided a reasonable modification to those no visitor policies and to other non-human communication supports like AAC and other communication accommodations that might be needed. That had come out in late March and I believe it was about two weeks later, I got a cold call on our main line from a woman in Connecticut whose mother had just been taken to the hospital less than 24 hours prior by ambulance. She was a 73 year old woman, GS were like initials to keep her identity confidential, but she's since come public. Her name is Joan Parsons, and she had acquired aphasia, I think 11 or 12 years prior due to an aneurysm and she was going to the hospital for non-COVID-related reasons. Her family, who had always accompanied her in the ambulance on necessary hospital visits and had remained with her in the hospital to ensure that she could communicate and understand, were prevented from doing so.  One thing led to another and we attempted to advocate and ultimately we needed to file an administrative complaint with the Office for Civil Rights at the US Department of Health and Human Services and something we did with Disability Rights Connecticut and a few other disability rights organizations. Can you can you share a little bit more about what the ruling entailed?  Tauna Szymanski  We filed that complaint in early May and very quickly the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) opened up what's called Early Case Resolution procedure, which all the parties have to agree to. The complaint was both against this individual hospital, which was Hartford Hospital in Connecticut, but also against the state of Connecticut for not having a statewide policy that reminded hospitals of this need to include exceptions in these no visitor policies for people with disabilities who needed in person support. It was sort of a two tiered complaint. Over the course of the next month or so, OCR, and Connecticut, and the hospital, and the disability groups, negotiated resolution to those complaints.  Ultimately, the resolution was an agreement for Patient GS, to be ensure that she could have that in person access. She was actually still hospitalized, after getting diagnosed with COVID, and was in the ICU for this entire time, six weeks. She was still in the hospital, I believe, that day we signed it. She ended up being released later, but we had resolved the practical issues earlier so she was able to be supported.  But the broader results of this complaint was that the state of Connecticut issued emergency regulations that essentially were a policy that laid out the law and said, yes, people with disabilities are entitled to have a support person present if needed, despite hospital visitor policies. It laid out a lot of the details about PPE and safety precautions that need to be taken. It wasn't a lawsuit, but rather, it was a decision that was endorsed by the Office for Civil Rights. It became a national precedent and an indication of what the federal government was saying that, yes, this is what needs to happen.  After that, we didn't have a whole lot of issues. We would just point people who were calling with these issues to that resolution. That was the backbone and that came out June 9 of 2020.   That had really widespread impact that summer. I saw the posting, that's how it came to my attention. We were cheering because for us, that's landmark, as protection for the people we work with and care about. They we're telling us stories of being so scared about going to the hospital and not being able to communicate.  Not only did you have that landmark ruling, but you also created this Hospital Visitation Framework document. Could you please speak to what the main criteria are for evaluating if a hospital policy is discriminatory? Let me share with the listeners one quote from the document: “Doctors have an ethical obligation to seek and obtain informed consent from every patient, something that cannot take place, if the patient does not have the tools and supports necessary to become informed, ask questions and make decisions and communicate consent. No visitor policies pose serious barriers to individuals with disabilities who require in person supports.” Could you explain a little bit more about the hospital visitation framework? Tauna Szymanski  Sure. Together with the other disability rights organizations that we worked with on this issue, we put together this document, the Hospital Evaluation Framework. It was put together to compile best practices really, to highlight some of the better state policies and hospital policies out there in terms of the detail.  One of the things that I never thought I would, a year and a half ago, be looking at were these nitty gritty sort of details like under what circumstances can a support person eat and use the restroom while in the hospital? This is really what a lot of these negotiations come down to is that kind of detail. States still are all over the map with their policies and some states don't even have policies on this issue. And hospitals are all over the map, especially in states that don't have policies. We thought it made sense. I was on a daily basis getting calls on these issues and coaching folks in various states here are the sorts of things that you need to be thinking about.  As we were negotiating with OCR and Connecticut about elements that are important to put in these policies, this (framework) was the compilation of a lot of these issues. And we wanted to make it helpful for states and hospitals to adopt comprehensive policies that ensure that patients with disabilities would be able to be supported and have equal access. Part of this document reminds folks of this ethical and legal obligation that healthcare providers have to ensure they're seeking and obtaining informed consent from their patients. So if a patient has a communication disability, they're still entitled to be provided with informed consent.  Part of becoming informed is being able to understand what is being presented in terms of treatment options and also being able to ask questions about those options. And then, of course, providing that consent. Much of what we've had to do in terms of advocating on this issue is reminding healthcare providers that you still have to do this, right? Just because that person doesn't have the communication tools right now, you have to provide those (tools) to ensure that they can have that opportunity. And in the case of aphasia, and with Patient GS, a lot of what we were advocating for was reminding (providers) that Patient GS has aphasia and she can understand a lot, but sometimes she needs help with rephrasing. The only person that can really help with that is someone who knows her and knows the background of how she understands and expresses things. And how she can be asked questions in a certain way to ensure that she is answering in a way that is going to lead to an agreement, or decision, or consent.  This Evaluation Framework document methodically goes through some of these elements that we found were really essential to have in some of these no visitor policies. Including, is there a requirement in the state policy for a hospital to follow the policy? Some of them suggested it was optional. Or, what kind of facilities does the Framework cover? Does it just include hospitals? Or, does it also include congregate care type facilities, long term care facilities, skilled nursing, etc.?  Some were very selective about the types of disabilities that they listed and yet you don't need to have a certain type of disability to qualify under the ADA for an accommodation. So it goes through some of that. What we also thought was helpful would be to footnote each of these with real examples from states, including the language that they've used in their policies, to address each of these points. You can see the variation in how some states have done this. That was, hopefully, a helpful resource. We've used it over time as we've worked in new states to encourage better policy adoption.  That’s a really big undertaking. And right before we started our interview, you mentioned that there's been some updates as of yesterday. Do you want to share?  Tauna Szymanski  Sure. This was specifically about hospitals. The Patient GS situation was really about hospital visitation. And we had been hearing increasingly from folks in nursing homes and institutions, for lack of a better term, and intermediate care facilities, assisted living facilities, skilled nursing facilities, about similar issues about people not being able to go into to visit and then to support. We always start by emphasizing that distinction between a visitor and a disability support person, because in a lot of these facilities, there is actually a legal right to visitation. But more strongly, under disability rights laws, there's this separate and independent right to effective communication and certain disability related support. There was no real guidance about those rights in these other types of settings at the time, and so we, along with several other disability and aging groups, spent a good chunk of last summer pushing CMS, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, to issue guidance on those rights in those settings.  And finally, in September of last year, we got some guidance about nursing home visitation. Then in January of 2021, we got guidance about visitation on intermediate care facilities, and psychiatric residential treatment facilities. Yesterday, just an hour after we presented about the nursing home and ICF visitation, HHS and CMS actually issued an update on the nursing home guidance on visitation and made it stronger, talking about the role of vaccinations and that sort of thing. So essentially, all of these other guidance documents include that additional language about reminding those who run those facilities that that if a patient with a disability requires an outside support person to access the services and healthcare options that are provided in those settings, they're entitled to do so regardless of those no visitor policies. Some of the documentation and legal aspects can be overwhelming for families to navigate. That's why you put in place this COVID-19 Communication Rights Toolkit, which is very accessible. I urge all our listeners to share the link with families which we'll have in the show notes Could you explain what it is?  Tauna Szymanski  This was put together in March very, very quickly. It tries to simply lay out what those communication rights are in health care settings. Specifically, it includes a section about how you protect those rights and assert them. It includes links to the three different laws, which are the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act. For advocates and lawyers in health care, hospitals, and whatever, they can click on the links to see the actual laws if they want to read them. And then it includes additional resources, like the Evaluation Framework. We included various memos and links to the guidance for state policies that we've compiled on our website. At the very back, there is something that you can actually print out designed to be a form that you present to the hospital when you're being admitted which says: here's my name, here's my emergency contact, here's the support I need to communicate. It could be this person, it could be this AAC device, I need wait time, please be patient, etc. It cites the law and asks people to put this document on my chart and you can keep a (copy of the) document. It’s designed to be used before you need to go to the hospital. We’ve heard that folks are actually doing it that way. Lots of folks have this filled out just in case they have to go to the hospital at some point. We have it translated in both Spanish and Chinese.   Maybe one of the tips for introducing this to a family, if a client has an upcoming surgery, is to refer them to this Communication Rights Toolkit, and encourage them to print out the Communication Rights form, right? Do you have any specific stories you want to share about its use at a hospital that's come back to your organization? Tauna Szymanski  I haven't heard long detailed stories about its use. But I have seen on many occasions, on Facebook, Twitter and in emails, that folks have brought this information to the hospital and have used it successfully. So that's been very gratifying. I was truly inspired and grateful for the work that your small organization has been able to accomplish during this time when so many families have spoken about feelings of loss and fear about not being able to advocate for their loved one in a situation that is already very, very scary. And it's just been compelling to see the difference that this organization has made.  I want to express my appreciation to Bob and to you, Tauna, for what you've accomplished. Thank you so much. And I hope our listeners will look at the links in the show notes to check out the Communication Toolkit and the Hospital Framework.  Also, in the show notes, Bob, you showed me yesterday that, as of March 3, you posted a video on the history of communication rights. I only had a chance to start watching it and I can hardly wait to finish it. I urge everybody to check out that video. It is going to be an amazing tool for sharing the importance and value of the history of bringing communication rights to people. Thank you for that. As we wrap this up, when we finally did get to have a tech check after creating a second meeting without the password, we started talking about Springsteen because I saw that noted in your bio, and I couldn't resist.  You liking Springsteen makes a lot of sense to me, because at heart, he is really a storyteller. It seems to me, that you too, are very much a storyteller and you understand deeply the value of being able to tell your story. I asked if you had a favorite Springsteen song that you'd like to share?  Bob Williams  As I told you before, this is the impossible question to answer. I first heard Bruce in 1972. I believe he was the warm up act for Richie Haven. But I was too focused on the redhead college student with me to give him any notice. Soon after, some friends turned me on to the stuff he did on albums, like Greetings from Asbury Park, and The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle. So like every old friend, we have been through and continue to go through a lot together. In trying to make sense of this world, each in our own way, trying not to be blinded by the light. And to find some ways to make things more right. So you're telling me there is no one song? Bob Williams  No, but here are a few. I love ‘Jungleland’ for its artistry. As the man wails, it is a ballet being fought out in the alley. Clarence’s saxophone solo at the end always takes me places where I crave to be. ‘Racing in the Streets’ also calls out to me. It reminds me of my dad. His work ethic, his drive. The way he lived his life and expected us to do the same.  But if I really need my fix from the Boss, I listen to the ‘Ghost of Tom Joad’ and ‘Youngstown’. The injustices Bruce challenges in many of his songs are as real, if not deeper, today than ever. But so are the yearnings they inspire. That is the fix I keep going back for. Of course, I can belt out ‘Thunder Road’ and ‘Rosalita’, just about anything he sings, with the best of them. Absolutely ranks you as a top fan. I agree with you deeply. So thank you for sharing that answer.  I want to thank both of you for sharing your expertise today with our Aphasia Access members. I've learned a lot. And I'm hoping that we're able to get the good work that your organization is doing out to a lot more people. So thank you so much. The financial state of the world is totally insane. The powers that be somehow believe that printing money will enable countries to avoid recessions and depressions. It’s like believing that blood-letting will cure whatever ails you. We’re now in the 19th recession since the inception of the Fed. In addition to failing at its major responsibility, It’s been totally corrupted. It’s primary mission has devolved into creating unlimited money to fund unlimited government. In this episode, Paul continues his journey through a series of discussions, each focusing on how his special guest would change the world if they could. This time we have not one, but two perspectives on this question, from Bob and Shona Conlin (plus baby Forest), a certified coaching team who have made it their mission to help other couples realize the magic they have in their relationships. As Bob and Shona discuss, our relationships are the key to a brighter tomorrow, and should be the highest priority in our lives. KEY TAKEAWAYS With the pandemic literally separating us from those we love, and the polarising political ideologies raging through the world, now is the time to dig deep and connect to the humanity we wish to contribute to society. Love and hope are always behind every choice in life. If we see past the fear, reject negativity, and try to better understand, we can choose love and hope over fear every time. Creation is the moment in life in which we are able to manifest and bring about the experience of life that we truly desire. We find refuge in faith. It is the force that allows us the peace of “knowing”. We rely on faith to see us through, but also relax in its presence.  BEST MOMENTS ’Now, more than ever, it’s time to connect to what it is you want to contribute’ ‘It’s important to rely on the things we know to be true’ ‘It starts with a thought. It starts with intention. It starts with the end in mind’ ‘We are spiritual beings having human challenges and experiences' VALUABLE RESOURCES Mastering The Game Of Life      ABOUT THE GUESTS When Bob and Shona met, it was clear they were creating something special.  Their whirlwind courtship had them sharing their vows and building a life together in unexpected ways. Admittedly at a pace, at times uncomfortable, they were intently clear on who they were, what they wanted, and why they wanted it.  This clarity is what they believe is the recipe for creating magic everywhere inside of the relationships to ourselves and those we love. A professional and certified coach team, married with a miracle baby named Forest, they believe anything is possible when we intentionally LIVE IN LOVE and get supported to do so. Their approach to love has been featured across the globe on numerous social media platforms, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, Good Morning America, and ABC World News Tonight. www.wemeetagaincoaching.com ABOUT THE HOST One thing that’s never been attached to Paul is the label ‘normal’ – something he is totally aware of.  He definitely subscribes to being one of those mentioned the iconic ‘Think Different’ Apple commercial narrated by Steve Jobs in 1977: “Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules.  You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do!” Paul has a long and distinguished history of coaching & mentoring – particularly focusing on helping people make the transition from pain to purpose; a journey he has made himself, from the depths of a deep dark existence, to now living a life of happiness and prosperity. In today’s episode, I’m welcoming back our first repeat guest, Alex Jamieson. However, this time she is also joined by her husband Bob Gower. They have written a new book together called Radical Alignment, and as I mentioned to them during our conversation, I believe it should be required reading for all university and college students, CEOs, politicians, and quite honestly everyone! I think their souls have timed this book with the world’s inability to have a conversation that can solve problems.  In this conversation, I speak with Alex and Bob about how they met and the evolution of their relationship. They share lessons learned from previous relationships and how they broke old patterns to allow this one to be different. They explain how they moved through each phase of their relationship with intention and they agreed that “if something is important, then we are going to talk about it.” They talk about their methodology for having difficult and challenging conversations, and how to engage with loved ones even when you don’t agree. There is a condition though, you can only use this with people who are there in good faith. They have to want to connect with you and be willing to allow a different perspective than their own. We could use more of that in our world right now, couldn’t we? As Bob explains during this conversation, “relationships are people growing machines. You get the support, solace, fun, and excitement only when you embrace the opportunity to learn and become a better version of yourself.” Working on ourselves is great, but the real expansion and growth opportunities come when we are in relation to others.   “When you give yourself over to a relationship, then the relationship gives back to you.” ~ Bob Gower   I hope that you will not only listen to this episode but also watch the video version of it on YouTube so that you can witness the way these two amazing humans listen to and regard each other. It’s truly something to behold. I hope this interview inspires you to have a deeper, more honest conversation with someone in your life. I hope that you are brave enough to not know all the answers and to be open enough to see another’s perspective. This is the way forward, both for ourselves as individuals, and also as a country and even the world. Bob Wick is much more than a media magnate and co-owner of Wick Communications, a chain of newspapers and radio stations across the country. He is also a renowned artist, the creator of monumental bronzes that bring together man and nature in compelling and insightful ways. He also taught art at Kent State University in the 1960s and knew well many of the leading figures from that tumultuous era. He was close friends with Carl Oglesby, anti-war activist, author and president of the Students for a Democratic Society, and John de Groot, famed journalist who won the first of his two Pulitzer Prizes for coverage of the tragic events of May 4, 1970 in which the National Guard unleashed a hail of bullets at peaceful protestors, killing four bystanders. We talk about the tragic folly of Ohio's governor and Kent State's president, and how that event nearly tore about a country already deeply divided by war and injustice. We also talk about Nixon's efforts to establish a guaranteed basic income, the advent of free agency in baseball and sports in general, and how art can unify a culture. Bob talks about his own art, in which he seeks to show the oneness of all things through huge bronzes which bring together man and nature. As Bob quotes Buddha: "What's inside is outside, what's outside is inside." We don't talk about how we've know each other for nearly 50 years, and how his compassion and kindness opened the golden doors for opportunity for me to achieve a career in journalism. Bob Turner- a friend and Board member of the Cyber Security Hub- as well as the University of Wisconsin-Madison CISO - was kind enough to make some time for an interview. The following is an overview of the past, the present and perceptions of the future cyber security reality.  The University of Wisconsin is a research one level university with about 23,000 staff, roughly 44,000 students during the normal part of an old-normal year. This number jumps to a total of 80,000 users overall, when considers affiliates and ancillary personnel which means roughly a hundred thousand end points. Thus Bob notes that the University has a large amount of important research. His resources are focused- he's got 38 full time staff with about 20 students that are supporting governance, risk management, incident response, vulnerability and what they call the common system Cyber Security team- which focuses on the big ERP-type systems, HR, Finance and Student Information. During the March, 2020 migration off-prem- Bob's team was responsible for protecting that research, rolling out the BCP and moving 3,700 classroom courses to online delivery- to name a few initiatives. The BCP did in fact roll out well- Bob was happy with the team and confident in the execution, “the X factor, I think, was trying to understand how many of the different collaboration tools were out there and understanding about those tools that we may not have looked at very close in the past. We had to do that on the fly and we had to do it rapidly.” The Past: Shop in order It was confirmed for Bob and his team that ‘the past’ was secure. There were not issues in rolling out the business continuity plan, which was secure. There were not issues with the systems in place, which were secure. The team continued with business-as-usual, “daily security routines run a playbook and a SOC and the regular pattern and pace of risk assessments and policy management, as well as trying to ensure that our users are aware of issues.” The Present: Work to be done Now 100% remote, with business-as-usual going smoothly, on a dime- ‘the present’ presented a threat matrix, which could not have been anticipated based on the fact that a 100% remote global workforce was not anticipated by anyone. And so Bob and the team “had to put together a provisional policy on how to manage collaboration tools: What do you record? How do you record it? What type of data can you talk about over the air? Do the solutions have encryption in transit and encryption at rest, and is that encryption a suitable standard?” As Bob tells it, beyond collaboration tools, “COVID brought with it a whole bunch of fun, little scams, a lot, a dramatic increase in the phishing attacks, business, email, compromise attacks and anything social engineering happening in real time.” With digital machete in hand, Bob slashed through all of those new issues to ensure that he and his team could take a step back and have a big picture focus on what he’s always focused- people, process and technology. The Future: The Department of Know With a big picture focus on people, process and technology- technology could be construed as your tools and process could be construed as your tactics. Tools and tactics can be improved or replaced to fit better with a new reality. But changing people is a more delicate and more gradual shift. “If it's face to flat screen, not face to face, we need to be able to see the person on the other end and understand if they're stressed or if they're, calm and cool and collected. It's about listening very carefully to those indicators. We have staff who are spending part time as parents which means part time as a teachers and part time as the custodial staff in the house. And, and then they're also working for us.” “So the eight-hour workday is not contiguous. We have to make sure that we're compensating for that appropriately.” Truly understanding the human dynamic on his team is only the beginning. Bob is focused on understanding what each user needs and ensuring that user can appropriately and flexibly do their job with his support. He knows that his job is to ensure access with security. If he blocks access, the user will simply work-around with no security. As the future is now, he knows he cannot make decisions that negatively impact the work of his hundred thousand users. He has to be “thinking as a business enabler.” The department of no must become the department of know.

Robert Kegan, the author of The Evolving Self and In Over Our Heads, explores the vital role of interior development in creating a more inclusive and integrated world, as well as the importance of the appropriate use of discriminating awareness. Robert Kegan is a founding member of Integral Institute and the author of the critically acclaimed books The Evolving Self, In Over Our Heads, and How the Way We Talk Can Change the Way We Work. Bob is also the first-ever Meehan Professor of Adult Learning and Professional Development at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. As the holder of this endowed chair, Bob has the official support of HGSE to pursue developmental studies for the rest of his career. This is significant. For the past several decades developmental studies have fallen upon some hard times in academia. For many, to have a developmental view is to be hierarchical—and to be hierarchical is to be oppressive, regressive, patriarchal, and a direct contributor to the suffering of untold millions. The fact the HGSE has decided to so clearly support Bob’s work is a welcome sign that the winds may be shifting. It’s important to note that there are (at least) two significantly different ways that “hierarchy” can be understood: as it exists in the exterior structure of a society and as it exists in the interior structure of an individual. Historically, enormous abuses of power have occurred by those at the top of a societal hierarchy—but those who would do so are by definition not at the higher stages of the interior, developmental hierarchy. Psychologically, people grow through stages of increasing competence, care, and concern. Each stage transcends and includes the function of what came before, but excludes an exclusive identity with that function. As Bob and Ken discuss, an important element of worldcentric consciousness is the contributions of postmodernism, including feminism, civil rights, and, among other things, the understanding that a substantial amount of human knowledge is context dependant and culturally bound. But postmodernism then stepped beyond what it had evidence for and claimed that all knowledge was relative, and therefore nothing could be said to be better than anything else. In fact, a fellow researcher, Clare Graves, called this level of development relativistic (Spiral Dynamics green), which research has shown accounts for about 20% of the American population. But as Ken points out, that means that about 20% of the population has gotten confused about how to make conscious, explicit judgments. Most of the people in this group would agree that a worldcentric embrace of all cultures is better than ethnocentric racism, but postmodern relativism won’t be able tell them why it’s okay to think this way. When all judgments have been outlawed, even sensible examples of discriminating awareness rightly applied have nothing to stand on. A more mature, integral form of worldcentric consciousness acknowledges that there are different levels of consciousness existing in the world today, and that encouraging growth towards greater care, concern, and wholeness is entirely appropriate. No one is required to change the way they are living, but everyone is invited to discover for themselves these higher territories of human potential. For anyone interested in exploring the possibility of further growth and transformation, it never hurts to have a good map of the terrain ahead. We hope you enjoy this dialogue between two of the best mapmakers out there for the ways we can all inhabit the deeper levels of consciousness this world so desperately needs….

'Uncle Bobby's Record' is a private press gem from folk artist Bob Gebelein. Put this record on the turntable and you'll be transported to a Greenwich village coffee house in the era of Dave Van Ronk and Bob Dylan. As Bob was working on the album, his neices began referring to it as 'Uncle Bobby's Record' and thus it received its title.   While the sound is endearing in its stripped down approach, deeper listening to his societal commentary on a song like 'Civilized Blues' reveals a surprisingly punk kind of edge. Uncle Bobby is to be taken more seriously than you thought when initially hearing his quaint folky strumming. Uncle Bobby doesn't care what you think, he's just being himself.   Discussions with Colombia Records never panned out for Bob, but listening to this album it isn't difficult to imagine a parallel universe in which he ended up on the 60's folk Mount Rushmore.

“Hops without malt just makes tea.” This week’s guest is Bob Sutton, better known as Barley Bob: The Brewer’s Friend, Bob is VP of Sales for RAHR Malting Co, the source of much of the barley malt for Alberta’s growing graft beer industry. Bob grew up in a military household, and while he had intended to follow in his father’s footsteps he and the military had to part ways just after basic training, which Bob describes as his favourite failure. As Bob tells us, this failure may have ultimately been responsible for his path into Alberta’s craft beer industry. At the time Bob was living in Thunder, where as he tells it you basically had two choices: the grain industry or the paper industry, so he applied to work with both. As it so happened he got offered a job in the grain industry and his journey began. After later moving to Alberta Bob was first exposed to craft beer when he drank his first Big Rock Traditional Ale. It was unlike anything else he’d tried and before and his palate for craft beer began to evolve, first from the traditional English browns Big Rock’s Trad emulated to ultra hoppy beers, more complex hoppy beers, and more recently an appreciation for sours. We’ve discussed before on Let’s Meet For A Beer that Alberta barley is world renowned for brewing, and is famously used by Lagunitas in the US. Bob helps us understand why Alberta’s typical weather patterns help mitigate the risk of losing a year’s crop, and how he works with farmers to make sure they’re growing barley deserving of Alberta’s top notch reputation. letsmeetforabeer.com albertabeerfestivals.com RAHR Malting Co

By this time Bob and Diane were raising a family which had grown to three of ultimately five daughters in 1959.So, in 1959 Bob joined the US Coast Guard with duties as a radioman on an ocean station near Honolulu. And then, during the Vietnam War, the U.S. Coast Guard played a vital role where Bob’s service was as a chief radioman. The ship assignment limited coastal infiltration by the Viet Cong into South Vietnam. As Bob and Diane served the Coast Guard, they moved their family to many military bases including Oklahoma City where they retired from the Coast Guard after twenty-eight years. After that, Bob’s service continued in the Oklahoma City Sherriff’s office serving in various capacities for eighteen years and then finally retiring, for good.As of this recording on November 14, 2017, Bob and Diane had been married sixty-four years and would like to be remembered as an average American couple who served their country and their community.

Adam Wallschlaeger from Action Coach, MN spoke about the parable of the talents from a business and personal development perspective. During some discussion, Bob realized the reason two of the servants went and put their talents to work right away was probably due to the type of relationship they had with the master. If they had an intimate relationship with their master, they would understand the expectations he had regarding the use of his money. Bob shares that we need to prioritize building an intimate relationship with Christ so that we can gain an understanding of what he wants us to do with what he has given us in life. Thom Winninger spoke about how we have a perfect God at another Thrive! event recently. Bob found Thom's teaching about how we are created in God's image impactful. We are created to create more than we consume, and we are perfectly put together to do what God created us to do on this earth. Another recent Thrive! speaker was Leary Gates. His training focused on the reality that we are not taking the time to think deeply anymore because of all the input that is coming at us. In Bob’s work he outlines Five Orders of Consciousness: First Order: Impulsive—Perceives and responds by emotion. Second Order: Imperial—Motivated solely by one’s desires. Third Order: Interpersonal—Defined by the group. Fourth Order: Institutional—Self directed, self authoring. Fifth Order: Interindividual—Interpenetration of self systems. Loosely, one can think of the first and second orders as egocentric (me), the third order as ethnocentric (us), and the fourth and fifth orders as worldcentric (all of us). If one grows from egocentric to ethnocentric, one doesn’t stop caring about oneself, but that care and concern is now extended to one’s family, community, nation, and so on. Likewise with the growth from ethnocentric to worldcentric, that care is now extended to all people regardless of race, class, creed, gender, etc. Originally published on 12/20/2004

Bob Stutman, former head of the DEA’s New York office and currently one of the nation’s top experts on drug usage, was once told by a doctor, “The day I got out of my residency, I was no longer a physician…I was a business man.” This may not be true of every doctor, but it shines a light on one of the larger issues contributing to the worst drug epidemic in modern history—the pressure on doctors to treat patients with prescription pads rather than with safer, cheaper alternatives. In this podcast, Bob discusses this cultural shift and its implications with Bottom Line CEO Sarah Hiner. Our tendency to treat every ache and pain with a pill has gone too far, and with Big Pharma in control, it falls on us to educate ourselves and ask the questions—why is this still happening…and what steps can we take to shift the culture away from drug dependence and bring an end to the opioid crisis? As Bob says in this podcast, “It’s far more than a drug epidemic…it’s a culture-changing epidemic.” For more information, check out Bob Stutman’s website, https://thestutmanswitalskigroup.com.

On today’s episode of Just the Tips, Dean and I welcome someone who has written extensively and authoritatively on the use of influence and persuasion. Bob Burg is the co-author of the Go-Giver, a book that has sold more than 700,000 copies and has become hugely—pardon the pun—influential. On this week’s episode, we talk about what it really means to influence others, how doing so requires you to master your emotions, and Bob’s five secrets for gaining influence. His philosophy is about more than business success, it’s about becoming a better person. It’s really wall-to-wall with tips this week, so you don’t want to miss this one. Nobody every bragged about having a lot of “push” We got going right away with Bob, diving into what “influence” actually means. And Bob talked about the need to have pull, to actually pull someone toward you or along with what you’re doing, rather than pushing yourself onto someone. And to do that, you have to bring value, and see how what you’re asking someone to do aligns with their values. And as Bob says, if we ask ourselves these questions genuinely and truthfully, we get a lot closer to collaborating with others and influencing them in a genuine way, rather than trying to get them to comply with our values. Bob is full of distilled wisdom on this week’s episode, and you gotta hear him get on a roll. Let go of having to be right It probably comes as no shock to any of our listeners that we live in a time where people are divided along cultural and political lines. We talked with Bob about why that is, why people are accusatory and insulting toward each other, rather than trying to influence and come together with people from “the other side.” And so much of what he said was right on: It’s simply easier to demonize those who disagree with us, and actually getting those people into our world requires we first go into theirs, understand where they’re coming from, and show where there’s common ground. As Bob says, you have to let go having to be right, of the feeling that you always have to be right, and instead go into “learner mode.” It’s a really fascinating conversation and one you’ll want to hear on this week’s Just the Tips. The secrets to influencing others Bob has a number of “secrets” to influencing others that are all outlined in his books, but he was generous enough to share them with us on this week’s episode. The first is to master your emotions, which Bob points out doesn’t mean suppressing or ignoring your emotions. It just means being in control of them so you’re able to keep a level head when someone is pushing your buttons. Bob also has a great technique for mastering your emotions. It’s all about imagining the feeling you’ll have after handling an emotional situation well. It’s best to hear him explain it, but it’s a really eye- and mind-opening way of improving your emotional mastery. Reset the frame Once you’ve become adept at harnessing your emotions, you have to be able to reset the frame, so that it’s no longer a negative thing. You’re positively connecting with someone. It really is some Jedi-level mind tricks that you’re pulling, but with all good intentions: to connect better with people. There are two more secrets that you’re going to have to listen to the episode to hear, but trust us, this is one episode of Just the Tips that you have to hear. Outline of This Episode [3:51] What is influence? [8:11] Why are we naturally adversarial? Cass Midgley and Dr. Bob Pondillo interview an ex-Christian married couple in their mid-twenties who are using the names David & Arrianna. They grew up in very different christian homes. David was brought up in a deeply fundamental, Pentecostal christian household. A literal reading of the bible was adhered to - the bible was considered THE word of god, end of discussion. Arrianna had a much softer experience with parents that prioritized empathy, understanding and asking questions. It didn't take long for these healthy habits to rub off on David (early in their relationship) and eventually led to both of them de-converting (amazingly, at around the same time and only about a year ago, so this is really fresh). They are both now totally removed from religion and personally feel they are better for it. We taped the conversation on August 5th, 2017. We interview people you don’t know, about a subject no one wants to talk about. We hope to encourage people in the process of deconstructing their faith and help curb the loneliness that accompanies it. One day we're soft on Christianity and the next we're on a mission to destroy it. At least that's how it goes for me. I haven't done the math, but at least one out every 10 guests we've had on this podcast are progressive Christians. Often they're friends of mine, and I'm usually pretty soft on them when they're here, with a few exceptions. Many of us are doing our best to maintain decent relationships with our Christian friends and family who are dear to us (at least those who will still talk to us). We ex-Christians have noticed a pretty stark difference between atheists that never loved Jesus with their whole heart for decades and those that did. And I've been critical on this show of the branch of atheist activism that ridicules the most extreme versions of Christianity; the low hanging fruit. I've said it doesn't take a lot of courage. I've referenced Jim Henderson's core tenets from episode 33 many times, one of which is "stop comparing your best with others worst." But as you know, I also reference and have prescribed what is probably the most scathing atheist podcast on the air, appropriately titled, The Scathing Atheist, and especially the opening diatribe by the founder of the show, Noah Lugeons. I featured one them on an episode years ago. Well this last week, on their episode 235, Noah makes a point that I want to share with you. He gave me permission to play this 5 minute diatribe. I won't reiterate his point here because he does a fine job of it, but to preface it, they have made a living creating a podcast that ridicules the stupidity of all religions, especially Christianity, since for a long time they were immersed in it in Valdosta, GA. If you're not a regular listener of their show, you may not recognize all the nicknames they've given the many practitioners of Christian stupidity (like Pat Robertson is P-Robe, for example) but don't miss the point he makes. As Bob and I marvel virtually every week and the bizzarro world in which we find ourselves, I think it's important to make the connection between how we got here (and by here I mean a Trump presidency girded up by evangelicals for starters) and the pass we've given Christianity for the last 50 years. We've turned a blind eye to the ludicris and absurd thinking that it would always remain on the margin. In the meantime, it's encroaching hegemonic takeover has grown into a powerful juggernaut that may be the end of us, and that's no joke. My thanks to Noah for letting me share his Diatribe here, for writing it, and a big tip of my hat for all the work he and his crew does to stem the tide of theocracy over America and religions around the world.   Who is on your mind? I recently became interested in this topic because I've noticed that some people seem to look outside themselves for how to think. Back on episode 126 we interviewed Jen Senko, who wrote and directed a documentary titled “The Brainwashing of My Dad,” how Fox News turned her father from a sound-thinking liberal to a paranoid alt-right conservative. Many people tune into particular pundits to know how to think. Sometimes we do it to each other. Have you ever had people in your life that were "big" in your mind while you were small and everything you did together you were constantly thinking, "what are they thinking?," so that you could know how to think about too? Perhaps to avoid conflict, perhaps align yourself with them because your own ability to think yourself was atrophied by non-use and it was just easier to adopt their point of view? As Christians, we used to ask ourselves "What would Jesus do?" And because we were taught to not trust our own heart and mind, we deferred our own agency to this imaginary, projected symbol of perfection. And how'd that work out for us? No matter the source, if there are influences in your life that cause you to cast doubts on your own thoughts or ability to think for yourself, get curious as to how that's impacting your personal development. That said, let's explore the opposite, if it's possible to have a few people that you admire that you consider when faced with tough decisions. Surely this is less toxic if it's not a forfeiture of one's agency. In my case, I sometimes wonder "what would Bill Murray do?" or Christopher Hitchens or some local personal friends in my life of whom I think highly. Sometimes we have the benefit of letting people--often authors of books we've read--shape our ways of thinking or seeing the world, and I think that can be very healthy. That's one way that being a life-long learner, or in community and relationships make us better people. Hell, our parents were models in both good and bad ways as to how to think or behave. With just about everyone we encounter we can see both how it's done right and model that and/or learn how NOT to do it.   As those of recovering from religion, we are learning to ask "what would I do?" What do I want? What do I want to experience? And how can I take responsibility for bringing about the changes in my life that I desire? This is basically the difference in hero worship and having heroes that we emulate. It comes up in our talk today with our guests--this notion of charismatic leaders and the way in which we put them on pedestals. Allow me to read an excerpt from two articles by Psychologist, Michael Schreiner about hero worship in which he addresses the issues of being a hero worshiper, being the worshipped hero, and how to have heroes in a healthy way.  (links to the articles are in the show notes). "Some feel the relentless drive to elevate a person to godlike status. They search and search until finding a suitable target, then bow down before this supposedly stronger presence. If one is on the receiving end of this, it can feel really good to be the object of hero worship, but understanding the psychology behind the phenomenon makes it much less appealing.Hero worship is not really about the hero. The same people who worship you one day will discard you the next, moving on to a new entity that does a better job filling the role. If you had not been the chosen one, someone else would have been. This idea applies whether we are thinking in the metaphysical context of deities, the social context of fame, or the intimate context of personal relationships. For example, if you have ever had a romantic partner who began treating you as all-knowing, powerful, and more talented than everybody else, he or she likely followed this same pattern in previous relationships too before they inevitably soured, just like yours did. Or think about the religionist who loves and worships his god until tragedy strikes, at which point adoration is replaced by cursing this god’s name. The reason to resist the temptation to accept the godlike role (and this may resonate with us ex-pastors)  is that your freedom of thought and behavior will become extremely limited. It stops being okay to make any mistakes or to admit your ignorance. If you buy into what is said and thought about you, then conflict will arise between who you really are as a human being and the unrealistic image you are trying to fulfill. You will attempt to cover up or minimize all your shortcomings and foibles until finally being exposed for the fraud you are (or human you are), at which point the person or people who have put you up on the pedestal can toss you aside with a clean conscience, feeling defrauded, even though they were the ones who unfairly put you up there in the first place for their own psychological needs. The people placing heroes on a pedestal are parasites (and this may resonate with lay people). For whatever reason they feel incapable of doing the hard work of self-actualization themselves, so they take the shortcut of basking in the glow of the hero's presence instead. They latch onto the hero, and unconsciously believe that this is enough, that they will be able to find fulfillment by being a small part of what is going on. They worship the hero, and all they ask in return is that the hero remain perfect at all times, living up to the impossible standard they have set for the hero without fail. But there’s nothing wrong in principle with having heroes, specifically when your relationship to them is one of emulation rather than worship. In this case you’re harnessing the power of anchoring, setting the bar high instead of settling for mediocrity. The goal is to join them up in that rarefied air, a much different orientation than perpetually praising them.Whether heroes are used for the purposes of worship or emulation, the psychology is the human need for transcendence, for escaping the ordinary in favor of the extraordinary. What it comes down to is cultivating the belief that if you discover and cultivate your unique seeds of potential, you can be extraordinary too. You don’t need heroes to take over the job for you, only to show you the way."

Kylene Beers and Robert E. Probst are trying to change how we read. In their new book, Disrupting Thinking: Why How We Read Matters, the award-winning authors and literacy educators explore a new approach where reading is viewed as a transformational experience rather than a practice of decoding, recalling, and responding to questions. As Bob says, "We're looking for the replacement of artificial and formulaic reading with REAL reading." This week, Kylene and Bob join us in the studio to talk about how teachers can start implementing changes in their classrooms today, ways parents can be reading role models for their children at home, and why it's more important that kids recognize how a text makes them feel than remember the main character's name. The writings of San Francisco playwright Peter Sinn Nachtrieb have always been a balance of the weird, the wondrous, the sensitive, and the cynical. Nachtrieb likes to test artistic and cultural boundaries, daring his audience to surrender its expectations. He likes happy endings, but he also likes to subvert them and stand them on their heads. In many ways 'BOB: A Life in Five Acts' is the quintessential Peter Sinn-Nachtrieb play, combining all of the idiosyncrasies and struggles and odd artistic impulses we've come to expect from one of his stories. And in the currently running production of 'BOB' at Main Stage West, in Sebastopol, all of these wildly consorting contradictions are given the perfect playground on which to cavort and cartwheel and freely express themselves. A bit of a dream project for director Sheri Lee Miller, 'BOB' is, in many ways, the perfect undertaking for her particular talents, requiring a high degree of artistic collaboration with her cast (one of Miller's strong suits), while also demanding a strong artistic eye. Miller accomplishes this, allowing the whole mechanism to feel as if it might go off the rails at any minute, brilliantly enhancing the sense of dangerous improvisation that is etched into the script. In other words, 'BOB' is a wild ride. Born in the restroom of a White Castle in the American South, Bob — played from birth to old age by Mark Bradbury — is promptly abandoned by his mother, then unofficially adopted by a waitress at the restaurant. In the first of five eventful acts, Bob names himself, travels to country with his adopted mom, grows into adolescence, learns a pop-cultural encyclopedia of random historical and sociological facts, and sets his sights on the goal that will determine the course of his life: to somehow become a "great man." As Bob grows up, essentially homeless, but driven by an optimism so pure it can be tasted in his kisses, he encounters and reencounters a bizarre parade of American stereotypes—good, bad, and otherwise. Bob’s epic, cross-country, decade-hopping life story is illustrated and narrated by a chorus of actors played with jaw-dropping elasticity by Laura Levin, Gina Alvarado, Sam Coughlin and Nick Sholley. Frequently beginning with the line, "It is said, that . . ." the storytellers work wonders, together and apart, roaming the pleasingly spare blank-canvass of a stage as they change voices, postures and costumes to become the numerous outrageous characters—and a number of animals and inanimate objects as well—whom Bob encounters as he pursues his dream, suffers a broken heart, loses his way, and finds it again in the most unexpected of places. Between each act, one member of the chorus performs a dance, exploring different themes such as hardship, hope, love, and luck. To reveal more would be to spoil an array of offbeat surprises. There is, to say the least, a lot going on in ‘BOB,’ much of which rests on the shoulders of Bradbury, who perfectly embodies the character’s boyish openness. Not everything in Nachtrieb’s ambitious script works, and though it happens rarely, some of the cast’s choices seem to treat certain revelations as punchlines rather than life-altering discoveries. But on the whole, ‘Bob’ is a thing of loose-limbed wonder and beauty, a wacky journey across a surreal landscape that will leave you with plenty to ponder and respond to, long after Bob finally learns what it really means to be great. Bob: A Life in Five Acts, runs Thursday-Sunday through May 22 at Main Stage West. www.mainstagewest.com.

For this episode, I was fortunate enough to speak with one of the real powerhouses of North Carolina, Bob Geolas. Bob is a North Carolina native who has reaped the benefits of the region’s growth over the past 50 years, and has made it his life’s work to give back first and foremost to the people and the future of this fine state. Bob’s career has taken him from politics to technology to his current job, which can only be described as building the cities of the future. As humble as he is, Bob knows the kind of individual and the sort of culture it takes to develop Research Triangle Park, one of the world’s best examples of brilliance in workplace engineering and culture building. RTP is an office park that houses some of the world’s greatest companies in technology and life sciences. The big ones, like IBM, Glaxo-Smith-Klein, and Cisco all have some of their largest and most forward thinking employee pools in RTP, each with over 5000 employees. They are housed next door to tiny startups, as almost 50% of RTP companies have fewer than 10 employees. Over time, companies housed in this 7000 acre park- a combination of trees, lakes, hiking trails, and massive buildings- can be credited with prolific inventions like Control-Alt-Delete, the scannable barcode, 3d Ultrasound technology, and Astroturf (that athletic turf we’ve all scraped our knees on during high school gym football.) Among the most significant of RTP accomplishments was the discovery of Taxol, hailed by the National Cancer Institute as the most important new anti-cancer drug of the past 15 years, and AZT, a drug used to fight HIV-AIDS. So ya, they do good work. Bob Geolas is the man charged with creating an environment for continued success in RTP. We talk about his time as an artist, his life as a non-technical leader in a technical world, his awesome snow day policy, Michillen restaurant guides, and much more. As Bob tells it, Walt Disney is a huge inspiration for him, so I’ll launch our conversation with a quote from the famed imagineer. “No city of today will be a guide for the city of tomorrow.”

An entrepreneur is defined as ?a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, usually with considerable initiative and risk.? These qualities have always been valued and cherished in America. Entrepreneurship has improved our quality of life in immeasurable ways and it always will. An immigrant in our country takes as much risk and shows as much initiative as any entrepreneur. We should be spending our treasury to keep them here, not keep them out. The anti-immigration fervor represented by many on the right and some on the left is shameful, bigoted, mean-spirited and contrary to our national ethos. As Bob so often says, ?let them all in.? To discuss the economic, social and security aspects of this most emotional issue and more importantly, to replace rhetoric with objectivity, Bob welcomed Cato?s Alex Nowrasteh back to his show. Alex brings his passionate devotion to truth to an issue which is usually discussed only with emotion.

Imagine a bank that operates in 67 countries around the world, has one employee, has made thousands of loans with an average value of $25 a pop and is committed to never making a profit but believes it can help eradicate poverty through capitalism. You just imagined The International Bank of Bob. And Bob Harris thinks what he's done is so easy and so rewarding that it won't be long before you decide to set up The International Bank of "Your Name Here".While jet setting around the world as a writer for Forbes Traveller, Bob Harris found himself wondering when luxury moves from being fun to just being a waste of money. Is it when the hotel you're staying in offers a $7438 "cocktail" that is really just a shot of whiskey in a golden take-out cup? Or is it when you charge a small fortune for a cup of coffee because it has been pooped out of the ass of a rare Indonesian cat which you claim releases the subtle flavors of the beans? (It's called Kopi Luwak.) Or maybe it's when you spend billions of dollars building islands in the shape of a world map which then get washed away? Bob wasn't sure when luxury became stupidity but he was definitely sure there was a point where it did and so, in his own small way, he decided to find a way to take half his salary and put it towards eliminating poverty. Frequently disappointed by the results of charity, he was looking for something different. And that's how he found his way to micro finance and Kiva.org.Micro finance began in 1976 when Muhammad Yunus was visiting one of the poorest parts of his home country, Bangladesh. While there, Yunus was struck by the inability of the poor to get competitive loans for their entrepreneurial projects. Because banks would not lend to them, the poorest people were forced to go to loan sharks who charged back-breaking interest rates. The result was a cycle of poverty that was difficult to escape. And that's when Yunus decided that breaking the solution to poverty might not be charity; it might be banking. By giving out small loans to the country's poorest citizens, Grameen Bank, which Yunus founded, has helped drastically improve the lives of millions by empowering the poor to help themselves. With micro finance institutions in over 100 developing countries, it's no wonder that Yunus and the Grameen Bank were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.So awesome is the power of micro finance to break the cycle of poverty that in 2004, Matt Flannery and Jessica Jackley set out to find a way to make it easier for people in the developed world to participate in these programs: the result was Kiva.org. Kiva.org allows you to log on and see people all over the developing world who are applying for loans and contribute to them. You can log on and see a photo of Martin who runs a convenience store and wants a loan of a few hundred dollars to buy a machine to process electronic payments or Rosalina in Honduras who wants a $1500 loan to buy fertilizer for her coffee crop. You can track the individual's loan history, their repayment rate and see how far they are to repaying their current loan. In short, Kiva is a far cry from the mega charities, we have become familiar with because it allows us to see on a personal and individual level how we are making a difference one individual at a time. Best of all, Kiva loans have a repayment rate of 99%, meaning that the same money can be reinvested again and again into helping new groups of people all over the world. As Bob made more and more loans, he developed a desire to meet the people he had sponsored and so he set out to visit bicycle repairmen in Morocco, the guy in Sarajevo who built a sports bar and a woman in Rwanda who in a year and a half used a series of micro finance loans to build a business that moved her and her children from living on a mat to having a proper house. The result is a deeply personal and very funny book that sets out to chronicle the stories of micro finance, but ends up leaving the reader with a sense of the universality of human intelligence, work ethic and a desire to provide a better life for our kids. In this episode of the show, Bob, Bryan and Hunter discuss the power of micro finance and the ability of tiny choices to radically change the lives of thousands. It's really moving and heartfelt…in a way that sometimes made us feel awkward...and that's why the conversation occasionally deviated into talking about strippers Bryan has micro financed and the fact that Bob won Jeopardy a bunch of times then wrote an awesome book about it called The Prisoner of Trebekistan. Bob Harris is the author of four books: The International Bank of Bob: Connecting our Worlds one $25 Loan at a Time, Prisoner of Trebekistan, Who Hates Whom, a pocket guide to global conflict; Beyond Caprica, a mock travel guide to the 12 colonies of the Caprica/Battlestar Galactica universe. If you'd like to try micro finance, Kiva is offering people the chance to invest $25 of a rich dude's money and see what the experience is like. In this episode, Bob Proctor ( https://www.proctorgallagherinstitute.com ) highlights the strength of the will and the power of the mind. He presents this to us by elaborating on the value of ideas, beliefs, and self-confidence as foundations of human flourishing and resounding success in this episode. According to Bob, self-confidence is the first requisite to great undertakings. A success story starts with ideas, but not everyone can absolutely believe in them and consistently act on them. He further contends that sacrifice comes first before success. And if you’re not prepared to pay the price, then you don’t deserve the reward. As Bob shares his story, we discover that what differentiates successful people from others is their ideas. Successful people once believed they could stand right on top of the world. They believed they could, and so they did. Indeed, what you can conceive, you can definitely achieve.
