Last year, media mogul Rupert Murdoch tried to wrest control of his family trust — and the future of his massive news conglomerate — away from three of his children in favor of his eldest son, Lachlan. The bitter court battle that followed strained the family to the breaking point and prompted his youngest son, James, to share his story, for the first time, with Atlantic staff writer McKay Coppins. Coppins’s article was selected as Apple News’s February Story of the Month, and he spoke with Apple News In Conversation host Shumita Basu about James’s challenging relationship with his father and the war for the Murdoch media empire.

Last year, one of the world’s most powerful families converged in a Nevada court room to fight over the future of their empire. Rupert Murdoch was attempting to change a decades-old family trust in order to install his chosen son, Lachlan, as heir apparent when he dies. Exactly what happened in that court room was a tightly guarded secret. But then, in a rare interview with The Atlantic staff writer McKay Coppins, James Murdoch gave his account of the case and how it tore his family apart. Today, Coppins tells us why James spoke out to reveal the bitter details of the battle over the Murdoch empire. This is part one in a two part interview. In this episode of The Optimistic American, host Paul Johnson sits down with McKay Coppins, an acclaimed journalist and staff writer at The Atlantic, to explore the intersection of politics, religion, and media. As the author of the book Romney: A Reckoning, McKay brings unparalleled insights into the political transformation of the Republican Party, from the Romney era to the Trump movement. They also address the complex dynamics between faith and politics, the struggle for moral integrity, and the role of religion in modern conservative politics. Topics Discussed in This Video:  - Mitt Romney: McKay reflects on Romney's political journey – from his time as a presidential candidate to his emergence as a principled critic of Donald Trump. They discuss how Romney's faith and moral compass guided his decisions and transformed his public image. - Religion and Politics: The conversation delves into the uneasy relationship between Trumpism and religious conservatism. McKay discusses the struggles of people of faith – especially Mormons – with Trump's leadership style and policies. They also touch on the broader implications of the Democratic Party's secular tilt and its impact on religious voters. - Faith in the Modern Media Landscape: What does it mean to be a person of faith in a secular media world? McKay recounts his personal journey as a religious journalist covering contentious political topics, including the pressure to remain fair and unbiased. He describes how faith offers unique perspectives, but also creates challenges in an industry often skeptical of religious belief. - Inside Journalism Today and What Needs to Change: McKay and Paul explore the erosion of trust in journalism, the decline of local news, and the rise of hyper-partisan media outlets. They reflect on how media polarization fuels negative partisanship, making Americans more distrustful of opposing viewpoints. Despite these challenges, McKay expresses optimism about journalism's role in rebuilding civic trust. - What Makes You Optimistic About America?: Despite the challenges in journalism and politics, Coppins expresses optimism. He highlights that most Americans are not consumed by partisan conflicts and continue to focus on everyday values – family, work, and community involvement. He believes this majority represents the country's true spirit, offering hope for bridging divides.

After factional infighting dominated the G.O.P.'s struggle to elect a House speaker, it feels weirdly quaint to revisit Mitt Romney's career. He's served as governor, U.S. senator and presidential nominee for a Republican Party now nearly unrecognizable from what it was when he started out. At the end of his time in public office, Romney has found a new clarity in his identity as the consummate institutionalist in an increasingly anti-constitutionalist party. But as a newly published biography of him shows, that wasn't always the case.McKay Coppins, a staff writer at The Atlantic, interviewed Romney dozens of times over the past several years and had access to his private journals, emails, and text messages. In this resulting biography “Romney: A Reckoning,” Coppins pushes Romney to wrestle with his own role — even complicity — in what his party has become. In this conversation, guest host Carlos Lozada and Coppins examine Romney's legacy at a time when it may seem increasingly out of place with the mainstream G.O.P. They dive deep into the key decisions and events in Romney's life; discuss the looming influence Mitt Romney's father, George, also a Republican presidential candidate, had over his life; how Romney rationalized appeasing figures on the campaign trail he found disdainful, including Tea Party populists and an early 2010s Donald Trump; how he failed to articulate just why he wanted to be president; the many grudges he has against members of his own party who acquiesced or embraced Trump; how Romney will be remembered by history; and much more. This episode was hosted by Carlos Lozada, a columnist for The New York Times Opinion, and the author of “What Were We Thinking: A Brief Intellectual History of the Trump Era.” Lozada is also a host on “Matter of Opinion,” a weekly podcast from New York Times Opinion.Book Recommendations:The Last Politician by Franklin FoerNumber the Stars by Lois LowryThe Plot by Jean Hanff KorelitzHell of a Book by Jason MottLess by Andrew Sean GreerThoughts? Lots of national politicians are keen to learn how Mitt Romney may skewer them in McKay Coppins' newly released biography, “Romney: A Reckoning.” Coppins, a Brigham Young University alum who writes for The Atlantic, had access to the journals and emails, as well as candid interviews with the Republican Utah senator, who made history as the first Latter-day Saint to top a major party's presidential ticket and first senator to vote to remove a president of his own party. But because Romney and Coppins are both members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, there is also a lot of Mormon-speak in the book. In it, the writer explores the way in which Romney's faith became a political roadblock for him while, at the same time, providing him spiritual strength and comfort. On this week's show, Coppins share ways Romney's beliefs shaped the man, how he faced the “Mormon moment,” why he lined up so boldly against Donald Trump, and what church leaders had to say about it all.

Read by Hugo Vickers, Gregory Cox, Julie Teal and Sandra Duncan. The insights and memories of a member of the British Royal Family - HRH The Duke of Kent - in conversation with Hugo Vickers about some of the key events of his life and The Queen's reign. HRH The Duke of Kent has been at the heart of the British Royal Family throughout his life. As a working member of the Royal Family, he has supported his cousin, The Queen, representing her at home and abroad. His royal duties began when, in 1952, at the age of 16, he walked in the procession behind King George VI's coffin, later paying homage to The Queen at her coronation in 1953. Since then, he has witnessed and participated in key royal occasions. He represented The Queen at independence ceremonies from the age of 25, he was riding with her when blanks were fired at Trooping the Colour in 1981, he was the oldest soldier on parade at Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph in November 2020 and he was alongside The Queen at her official birthday celebrations in June 2021 as colonel of the Scots Guards. No member of the Royal Family has spoken extensively of the modern reign and their part in it before. A Royal Life is a unique account based on a series of conversations between the duke and acclaimed royal historian Hugo Vickers. It covers some of the most important moments and experiences of the duke's life, from his upbringing at his family home Coppins in Buckinghamshire, his 21 years of army life, his royal tours and events, through to his work for over 140 different organisations, including presenting the trophies at Wimbledon for more than 50 years. Here, too, are recollections of family members including his mother, Princess Marina; his grandmother, Queen Mary; his cousin, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh; and his uncle, King George VI. Other members of the Royal Family contribute their memories, including his wife, the Duchess of Kent, the duke's siblings, Princess Alexandra and Prince Michael of Kent, his son, the Earl of St Andrews, his daughter, Lady Helen Taylor as well as his cousins, Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia, Archduchess Helen of Austria and her brother, Hans Veit Toerring. A Royal Life is an unprecedented, insightful and remarkable slice of royal history.

Around this time last year a Melbourne based band came on the scene that threatened to tear down the increasingly safe structure that had been slowly creeping into the local music industry and replace it with an old fashioned desire to play music for the enjoyment factor alone. That band was East York, and their promising debut single Outsiders which was quickly followed by the even more impressive Circus before the band released Damned Anthem back in March of this year. Then, almost as quickly as they forced their way into our lives East York went radio silent.Given the current state of world affairs that could likely be put down to a variety of factors, but with the bands re-emergence earlier this week with their crushing new single To Kill The Sun it is obvious the four members had been absent and using their time productively.Guitarist Daz Coppins joined us for a chat earlier today to discuss what he and the boys have been up to."There's definitely been a lot going on behind the scenes,” he affirmed. “As I'm sure a lot of bands and musicians can attest, 2021 was the year of false starts. We had tours booked that had to be pushed back or cancelled. We had a New Zealand tour booked in September which is now happening in February next year. We had three other shows in Melbourne that we had to cancel so it's definitely not through lack of trying. We have also been working hard on finishing the EP and getting that mixed and mastered. Yeah man, it's all done now. The EPs in the can. we're wrapped and ready to go.”Not content to release music for the sake of content, East York have raised their own bar yet again with To Kill The Sun, a song which cover a lot of ground musically and offering the perfect introduction to their sound should you have missed them the first time around.NOT fucking around. catchy as fuck beast of a song."We definitely went at it with all guns blazing,” Coppins nodded. “We knew as soon as we came up with the first initial structure - the instrumental that we came up with initially and the first bounce - it was like fuck, we've got something special here. It felt good and ticked all the boxes. It had the bounce. It had the groove and the energy, and the chorus just lifts. We were so excited for Tarquin (vocals) to get hold of it and sure enough he came out with the goods."In the full interview, Daz talks about To Kill The Sun in greater detail, the pressures of surviving COVID as an emerging band, next years debut EP Origins and what to expect musically, touring plans and more.

These days it's hard to feel optimistic about social media, especially if you're working in the news industry. But journalist McKay Coppins discovered it's not all that bad — in fact, it can be quite wonderful. In early June, Coppins went on Twitter to ask for “interesting facts” to tell his two oldest children (aged 6 and 8) before they go to bed. Apparently, his kids had outgrown bedtime stories and were now interested in real-life facts, which is the stuff of serious journalism. Clearly, they take after their father. Coppins was skeptical about how much interest his tweet would spark, thinking that maybe he would get 10 or 20 responses. But within minutes the suggestions stacked up and by the next morning over 3,000 people had written in, each with their own unique morsel of knowledge. Asha Rangappa wrote: “Your foot is the exact length from the crook of your elbow to your wrist.” Anna wrote: “Humans can process three channels of color (red, green and blue), while mantis shrimps perceive the world through 12 channels of color and can detect UV (ultra violet) and polarized light.” Philip Gourevitch simply told Coppins: “Bananas are berries.” Gasp! Coppins, a formidable political journalist and staff writer for The Atlantic, was surprised and delighted at the sheer generosity of his Twitter community. “Twitter — sometimes it's not that bad!” he tweeted out. He even replied to some of his fact-finders. After Sam tweeted a photograph of a coconut covered in stamps and said “You can mail a coconut,” Coppins replied to him: “Used this one tonight!” Some facts were more popular than others. Michael Gallagher's “Cleopatra lived closer to the creation of the iPhone than she did to the building of the Great Pyramid” for example, got over 2,000 likes. Did you know that? Data Security With Kevin Coppins Today we're going all the way to Florida to learn all about data security! A very unbelievably talented man called Kevin joins us on The Next 100 Days. What Brings You Into The World of Data Security Kevin deals with data that matters. The tag line at his company, Experian, is "Protect What Matters Most". The "What Matters Most?" portion of data is the digital versions of you and me. The digital bits, like your family, you neighbours, your dog. They are all bits of digital information you can find out online and resemble to make a digital version of yourself. It's hard for Kevin to identify who you are if there's two versions of you. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Data-Kevin.mp4 Unfortunately, it's a frequent data security problem. People are going to send you emails with a link and they wanted you to click on. They're not going to ask you for specifics, they're going to ask you for one slither of data. They can take that one piece of data and take it to other data they've found on the dark web. Or, through doing general research through things like Facebook and LinkedIn. The hackers can take that stuff, stitch it together and quickly become you. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/WHat-brings-you-to-world-of-data-security.mp4 Identity Theft One example he knows, is of a woman who had her driving licence stolen. A woman had taken that license and checked into the hospital with it. A different woman using her ID. That woman gave birth in hospital, to a child addicted to methamphetamine. After she had the child she left the hospital. The hospital thought the woman on the driving license was the woman who had the baby. They showed up at the real woman's house to take her children away. She was declared an “unfit mum”. This is when the stuff gets real in Kevin's line of work. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Example.mp4 What to do to Protect Yourself and Others Online Data Kevin usually gives people a book called “200 ways to Protect Your Privacy”. It explains things like why you shouldn't put your kids initials on their backpack. It could be an insight to your password, or your partners. If somebody knocked on your door, you'd assess who they are first before letting them inside. Just like with an email, you should always check it thoroughly first before clicking anything.   How did you get in the market? When Kevin was a young boy, he had a dream about getting into Data Security. Throughout his career, he's spent a lot of time I the identity and access business for the whole decade of 2010. Understanding identity was core. What is the who? Who do they have access to? Back in 2015 he watched a TedTalk. The guy talks about a golden circle. He says "people don't buy what you do, they don't buy how you do, they buy why you do it". Kevin was continuously challenging the "why" of this company. He couldn't find it, so he didn't want to work there anymore. Jake got into this job and this role just speaking off of his passion. This job is getting harder and harder all the time. If you're a big company and have loads of data, understanding the important from the none important bits it's highly important. In a lengthy essay in The Atlantic posted online Wednesday, reporter McKay Coppins explores The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its history as “The Most American Religion.” In a subtitle, the article states: “Perpetual outsiders, Mormons spent 200 years assimilating to a certain national ideal — only to find their country is in an identity crisis. What will the third century of the faith look like?” Coppins’ piece looks backward and forward, not as a dispassionate observer, but through his own lens as a practicing Latter-day Saint. He talks with scholars and politicians, insiders and outsiders, leaders and laypeople, even church President Russell M. Nelson. In this week’s podcast, Coppins talks about the path Mormonism has followed and what steps the Utah-based faith could — and should — take as it treads into its next hundred years.

McKay Coppins wrote recently in The Atlantic that President Donald Trump publicly praises evangelicals, prosperity preachers and other religious conservatives, including members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, while privately mocking them and belittling their beliefs. Coppins, a Brigham Young University alumnus, joined this week’s podcast to talk about the presidential candidates, the state of this year’s White House race, how the Biden and Trump campaigns are courting members, and whether Latter-day Saints — and the issues they care about most — could help determine the outcome in swing states.

Wednesday’s historic vice presidential debate between Mike Pence and Kamala Harris at the University of Utah was remarkable if for only being the polar opposite of last week's chaotic, interruption-filled presidential debate.“It almost felt like a throwback to the pre-Trump normal period of politics,” says McKay Coppins, a writer for The Atlantic. “You had two candidates who spoke in complete sentences. Who, for the most part, abided by the rules and didn’t cut each other off that much.“They were both able to articulate their viewpoints, their campaign messages and challenge each other,” he added.Coppins joined the “Utah Politics” podcast on Thursday morning to reflect on what kind of impact the debate might make on the presidential race during the stretch run. Spoiler alert: not much.“The kind of things that political observers say about vice-presidential debates is they’re the definition of low impact events. They almost never move voters,” said Coppins. Coppins also discussed the questions both Pence and Harris refused to answer during the debate and why he believes the effort to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court could reset the presidential race before election day.

“There are leaders and there are those who lead. Leaders hold a position of power or influence. Those who lead inspire us.   Whether individuals or organizations, we follow those who lead not because we have to, but because we want to. We follow those who lead not for them, but for ourselves.”    -- Simon Sinek; Start with Why, 2009   Once upon a time, not that long ago… the music industry was flying high, peaking at over $22 BILLION in global sales then was laid low by a combination of events and technology it was not ready for.   There were decisions to be made which could have not only saved the industry, but made it thrive.   Leadership did not make those.   There were relationships to be forged with users that could have done the same.   The industry began suing their consumers.   What if industry leaders made a point to really look out for their users and their employees first? You think that might be a catalyst for a company to grow and thrive even though it is facing a potential disaster?   In today’s episode of InSecurity, Matt Stephenson sits down with Spirion CEO Kevin Coppins for a chat about the role of a new leader in the middle of the most tumultuous time in the modern computing era. Having spent time in the music+tech upheaval of the Napster era, Kevin Coppins has steered through some whitewater rapids in his time. What do we do when the whole world gets turned upside down? Stay tuned and find out…   About Kevin Coppins     As President and CEO of Spirion, Kevin Coppins (@ktcoppins) wakes up every day on a mission to protect what he knows matters most—your sensitive personal data. With a team of passionate data privacy professionals at his back, Kevin is working to re-envision the culture of entire industries, putting privacy at the forefront where it belongs.   Kevin’s more than 25-year track record of growth, leadership, and achievement spans multiple roles and industries. In addition to handling finance and procurement for non-tech giants ExxonMobil and Bausch & Lomb, he’s served in senior executive positions across the tech space at Novell, Alcatel Lucent, Meru Networks, EasyVista, CyFIR, and NEC. He has a BS in Marketing from Penn State, an MBA from Loyola University New Orleans, and a Certificate of Professional Development from University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.   This unique diversity of experience and education equipped Kevin with the depth and breadth of skills needed to thrive at the helm of Spirion—a company whose data discovery and classification solutions have empowered the data privacy, security, and compliance strategies of thousands of organizations worldwide.   Kevin is determined to help C-suite execs understand the importance of minimizing their sensitive data footprint and preventing data breaches—not only to minimize the risks, costs, and reputational damage of successful cyberattacks and regulatory violations, but because it’s the right thing to do.   About Matt Stephenson     Insecurity Podcast host Matt Stephenson (@packmatt73) leads the Security Technology team at Cylance, which puts him in front of crowds, cameras, and microphones all over the world. According to my guest today, a lot of that money will be spent on a media disinformation campaign unparalleled in US political history. McKay Coppins is a staff writer at The Atlantic who has been reporting extensively on Mr. Trump since 2014. Mr. Coppins spent the past several months immersed in the pro-Trump media universe, exploring the new techniques the Trump campaign and its supporters are using to spread disinformation, discredit journalists, and permanently dismantle the mainstream media.
